Science and Research / Re: Transit of Venus
June 04, 2012, 03:48:53 PM
June 3, 2012

Most people don’t begin the week with thoughts of staring directly at the sun, but this week is different.

That’s because Venus, the second planet in our solar system, is going to be visible as a small black circle with the sun behind it for almost seven hours, beginning Tuesday at 3:09 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time.

It is a rare phenomenon, occurring in pairs about every 120 years. The transit last occurred in 2004 as the first half of the 21st-century pair. The next Transit of Venus will not occur until December of 2117.

The first scientific observation of the celestial event occurred in 1639, when careful measurements helped determine the distance from the earth to the sun. Additional transits were observed in 1761, 1769, 1874, 1882 and 2004.

According to NASA, “The timing favors observers in the mid-Pacific where the sun is high overhead during the crossing. In the USA, the transit will be at its best around sunset.” NASA goes onto say that “creative photographers will have a field day imaging the swollen red sun ‘punctured’ by the circular disk of Venus.”
As with the recent solar eclipse of May 20 or any event that may spark an interest in looking at the sun, proper eye protection is crucial. NASA reminds anyone who may be interested in viewing to avoid looking at the sun. The agency suggests using a projection technique or a solar filter, such as No. 14 welders’ glass. It also suggests contacting local observatories or astronomy clubs to see about special programs that may be scheduled.

While not visible from every spot on Earth, the Transit of Venus will be visible from all seven continents.

NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) is going to be monitoring the skies and will release top-quality images.

The Los Angeles Times is reporting that solar glasses are a hot commodity as people prepare for what will likely be the last Transit of Venus that anyone alive today will witness.

The victims of the Ampatuan massacre covered with banana leaves in Maguindanao province in November 2009.
#40867
This is shocking news. One of the key witnesses in the Maguindanao Massacre has been found dismembered and placed inside a sack.

That witness was Esmail Amil Enog. According to reports, Enog was reported missing last March after he testified in court last year. He testified for having a role in the massacre and said the Ampatuans, a powerful political clan in Southern Philippines, were behind the killings. According to prosecutor Nena Santos, the body was placed inside a sack but was already chopped up, probably by chainsaw. They said they will not be mentioning other names of witnesses to protect them from possible death.

According to Enog’s testimony, he was the Ampatuan’s employee in Mindanao and he was the one who drove a group of armed men faithful to Ampatuan to a site where they abducted 57 victims. The Maguindanao Massacre was a shocking event in 2009 which got worldwide attention. As of now, 64 people are on trial in Manila, which includes the heads of the Ampatuan clan. But hundreds more are still fugitives from the law and are currently being pursued.

As of the early 21st century, Okinawans in Japan, through practicing hara hachi bu, are the only human population to have a self-imposed habit of calorie restriction. Almost 29% of Okinawans live to be 100, about four times the average in western countries.[4] They consume about 1,800 to 1,900 calories per day. Their typical body mass index (BMI) is about 18 to 22, compared to a typical BMI of 26 or 27 for adults over 60 in the United States.

While a professor at Cornell University in the 1930s, biochemist Clive McCay found that significant calorie restriction prolonged life in laboratory animals. Authors Bradley and Craig Wilcox and Makoto Suzuke believe that hara hachi bu may act as a form of calorie restriction, thus extending practitioners' life expectancy. They believe hara hachi bu assists in keeping the average Okinawan BMI low due to the delay in stomach stretch receptors indicating satiety results in a constant stretching of the stomach which in turn increases the amount of food needed to feel full.

Hara hachi bu, or hara hachi bunme (and sometimes spelled hari hachi bu), is a Confucian teaching that instructs people to eat until they are 80 percent full. Roughly, in English the Japanese phrase translates to, "Eat until you are eight parts (out of ten) full" "belly 80 percent full". --Wiki

Bwahaha! Another "historical" tidbit: Rajah Humabon offered a fortune for the ransom of Magellan's body. Lapulapu, being a poor Boholano dragonfly, was so excited with the idea of being a rich man at last so together with his loyal followers he scoured the waters of the Batul ob Maktan , but to no avail. They could not find even one Portuguese incisor or fingernail. The educated guess of historians was that he was literally torn to little pieces which were carried away by the tide. Ang tinuod, gihimong pulutan si Magellan--of course not by the visiting Boholanos, but by the natives of the island!
