Glacier,

Perhaps you have mis-interpreted my point on the matter regarding Marcos, which you have brought to this thread.

But let me clear this for you.

Yes, I understand that Marcos' had a substantial negative effect on families, and on the government. I never once said that I completely pardoned his actions, nor did I say I accepted such. I reiterate, I agreed with the popular consensus that he did abuse his power.

I, however, admire his intelligence, his quaint nature, and the vision he had for the country during his earlier term (prior to martial law, prior to Imelda's involvement power). I admire his positive message, I admire the faith he had in the country in his 1st term and even 2nd term.

There are certain characteristics that I admire of Ferdinand Marcos; not everything, but certain. Specific.

The man, like any other man, had his strengths, his weaknesses; the goods and the bads.

What I'm trying to share with you, and others who mis-translated my admiration for Marcos is that--I admire the President that He Could Have Been.

Each and everyone has a right to infer his or her opinion, regarding anything.

It is the sensibility granted to us by democracy and Free Speech, of course responsibility must be mandated.

I think it is totally unfair for persons to pre-judge and apply disdain on one's personal choice, admiration, and respect for individuals whom they have interests in.

Admiration and respect is given by individuals by their own accord.

Such wanton violence.

There was a case in Illinois where a confused truck driver shot and killed a church pastor. The pastor deflected the first bullet with the bible, but additional bullets silenced the reverend's life.

My personal condolences to the victims and their families.

If this topic is painful for members in here, know that it was started because we, the Filipino-American youth who did not grow up under the Marcos regime or remember it, have a keen interest in understanding policies.

I myself, have learned alot from the postings of members in here, specifically, Way Nada, Calle, Glacier, Hofelina, Layman, Benne-san and the entire lot.

This is a learning experience, for me, and am sure for my fellow Americans, Filipino-Americans who did not have such experiences.

To ask, is to learn, to be corrected is to learn, to listen is to learn.

This thread is not only educative, but also enlightening.

I thank all of you for your personal input. As an American and growing up in the United States, my knowledge on recent Filipino history, policy, and discourse is limited, compared to you all, who grew up and lived/live in the Philippines.

I gain knowledge from your experiences, your voices, your different points of view.

Keep on sharing.

Fondly Yours,
And With My Deep Respect,

I admire Marcos' vision, particularly during his earlier years. Prior to Martial Law.
His style of governance is rather similar to those of Lincoln. Not many know that President Abraham Lincoln suspended Habeas Corpus in the United States Union during the American Civil War. His policies, anti-riot policies, a man that supported the totality of Union Forces in bending the Confederacy-even if it meant utilizing Total War Tactics--were all effectively administered for the preservation of the Union.

Lincoln is hated and beloved by many. Diehard southerners regard him as a brutal dictator and supporter of 'Northern Aggression', whilst a great majority of US historians would claim that his actions--though unpopular in his time, were necessary and mandated in order to secure and faithfully preserve the Union of these United States. Which, by law, is an eternal union of states.

African American supporters would even claim that the man was the 'Liberator' of the slaves, though clearly, it was obvious that Lincoln's primary goal was for the preservation of the union, second was the goal to break the Confederacy; and lastly in regards to the slaves. The emancipation of the slaves was a tertiary appeal; which he cleverly implemented to garnish British and French support--thereby, alienating the C.S.A.

So as you can see; its all a matter of perspective.

Marcos was an idealistic individual. I admire his ambition, his firm-handedness, and his repertoire. He became rather absolutist and autocratic in his later years--a result of unchallenged Control. An effect of absolute power.

However, and nonetheless, I admire his ideals. I admire his rise to power, his life in prison, and his proficiency in the law--undeniable considering he aced the national bars.

I would not dare compare Marcos to Hitler. Marcos epitomized the Machiavellian prince.

I love his story. And I respect the man.

Cheers,
Yours,
Lorenzo

LGU Philippines / Re: Century of aging
March 11, 2009, 03:52:08 AM
Aging is just but one out of many prerogatives that governments must assess.

Aging  translates in pention, welfare, medicare, assisted living homes, etc.

Aging translates in demands for government-subsidized agencies that focuses on the welfare of the geriatric population.

Which, in a sociological perspective, translates in a boom for services and sectors that can provide such demands. It translates in business, jobs for individuals that provide the service.

In tandem, government is legitimized or disgraced: according to its ability to assess and meet the requirements; or if it fails to do so.

Cheers,

God is so intelligent, that what happens in the world of man and in the animal kingdom, can also be seen in the cell.

Everything is ordered, perfectly. Everything, everyone has a pre-assigned/pre-disposed task.

And that task is finite. When the task is finished, the organism/cell will die.

I reiterate, everything has a task, a role, a purpose.

Death is just rest. The final rest.
#40218
LGU Philippines / Re: Century of aging
March 11, 2009, 03:43:57 AM
Death is necessary.

It is even evident in the cellular processes, Bem.

In our bodies, especially in the circulatory system, we have Erythrocytes (RBCs; red blood cells) and the life expectancy of RBCs are about 120 days. When RBCs as well as any other specialized cell in the body becomes senescent (old, past its prime), it will eventually mutate, its proteins that compose its phosphotidic backbone and its phosphlipid bilayer weaken and this signals the Marcrophage cells and the Phagocytic cells of the body to lyse the senescent (old) cells. The old cells are engulfed in proteosomes and are sent to the spleen and liver where it is destroyed and its hemoglobin, and bilirubin is converted for use in growing reticulocytes (pre-mature RBCs).

As you can see, even in our own body, the old is digested and replaced by the new.

There is a scientific necessity in ridding of the old cells; as it will cause mutation and are primary sites for infection due to senescent cells' inability to fight bacterium and pathogens.

Therefore, the body, as a singular unity, acts on behalf of the 'good' of the entire body. Every single cell in the body, when it reaches a certain age undergoes 'apoptosis': cellular euthanasia.

Old cells are actually ordered by the body's receptors to kill themselves. After death, the cells are cleaned up by macrophages, phagocytes, and recycled.

The irony is, if Germany, a highly developed country is even proposing Nuclear Power Plants to be phased out, we in the Philippines want to start it here again.

There is a saying that goes, " to learn from ones mistakes is good, but to learn from others mistakes is better.

Today 31 countries use nuclear energy to generate up to three quarters of their electricity, and a substantial number of these depend on it for one quarter to one half of their supply.

The People's Republic of China (which has 9 running nuclear power plants) plans to build 32 more nuclear power plants by 2020. China, just like the Philippines is an industrializing nation.

It is categorically unfair to compare Germany, a modernized western nation, with the Philippines, which has yet to reach its economic, military, and energy potential.

Nuclear power is an excellent source for renewable energy. Nuclear power, wind and solar power would sustain the Philippines' energy demands in the present and in the future.

Glacier and others,

It is imperative for one to analyze the picture detached from any semblance of emotion and raw feelings. Don't get personally involved. Clearly, there are differences in opinion regarding the policies, statutes of the late Ferdinand E. Marcos.  My view may be different from yours, and yours mine. However, I respect your right to opine. I would also like that same right to be reciprocated.

There will be discourse regarding this thread, but what makes us, learned and intelligent minds, ipsilateral is our ability to analyze and illustrate our own opinion on said matter.

Differences will arise. But let us agree that we have the right to disagree.

In the United States, especially in Political Science Halls, Marcos is a popular topic.

Why?

He fascinates the American mind. Marcos' shear brilliance leaves American Political Scientists and pre-law students asking, "How could he have done such?"

In the western notion of revolution, the deposition of a ruler and the cleansing of the old regime's political presence is mandatory, in order to legitimize the rule of the new regime.

Case in point: The French Revolution, Russian Bolshevik Revolution, The Peninsular Revolution, etc.

Requirement for a 'revolution' is the repudiation of laws, statutes, and unfair edicts by the 'old regime'. As in the case of the Nazi Party in Germany.

However, Marcos' predicament is unusual, in the American eye.

Not only is this man the center of debate amongst educated and learned Filipinos (opposition vs. apologist), however, this very same man that was ousted from power, his legacy remains, despite emotional disdain.

His is the case where a President is emotionally hated by many; yet the political spectrum cannot completely repudiate and banish Marcos due to his shear brilliance. Over 1,000 laws/edicts/statutes/promulgations initiated by Marcos exist to this day.

Was the People's Power Revolution a true and complete revolution?

Of course not. The man may be gone, but his lasting presence is in the Law.

That's what makes Marcos Unique.

Hated by many, yet Loved and Admired by a multitude.

#40226
I would not say that Marcos was a demon, Tito Zosimo.

I would more like to say that he held the reigns of power and manifested the political culture of the day. Dictatorships were common in the 60s-80s; the reign of Marcos was a chapter in Filipino history.

His consolidation of power and his presidential decrees regarding laws and statues manifested the man's innate brilliance, and political animalism.

The truth of the matter is that most of his policies and laws are in use to this day.

He had his goods and his bads. Like any politician. Albeit, his was more absolute.

The greatness and legacy of the man that was Ferdinand E. Marcos will forever be etched in the mind of the Filipino; abroad and domestic.

Lest we forget of his successes, his failures, his trials, his rise, his fall, his story.

We all have different views on the man that was Ferdinand E. Marcos.

Like any historical subject, date, epoch, there will be two sides of the coin.

Your Excellency, President Ferdinand E. Marcos, I salute you, sir.

May the work I do bring growth in this life to me

Give all persons work that draws them to You

Im estimating this picture was taken from the late 19th century to early 20th. Hispanization is so obvious--that even the Tausugs of deeper Mindanao were affected.

The attire of the woman; observe her shawl, and her dress--bears semblance to the maria clara, aside from her headgear, which is some sort of indigenous regalia.

Let their wickedness stay with them. And let the love of the Lord and Holy Spirit be within our own hearts.

For there is no room for wickedness, in our heart. As we are told that we are the temples of The Holy Spirit:

'Don't you know that you yourselves are God's temple and that God's Spirit lives in you?'
1 Corinthians 3:16

MARYVILLE, Ill. â€" A pastor shot and killed during his Sunday sermon deflected the first of the gunman's four rounds with a Bible, sending a confetti-like spray of paper into the air in a horrifying scene that congregants initially thought was a skit, police said.

The gunman strode down the aisle of the sprawling First Baptist Church shortly after 8 a.m. and briefly spoke with The Rev. Fred Winters, then pulled out a .45-caliber semiautomatic pistol and began firing until it jammed, Illinois State Police Director Larry Trent said. Churchgoers wrestled the gunman to the ground as he waved a knife, slashing himself and two other people, Trent said.

None of the about 150 congregants seemed to recognize the gunman and investigators do not know details of Winters' conversation with him, but they planned to review an audio recording of the service, Trent said. The service was not videotaped.

"We thought it was part of a drama skit ... when he shot, what you saw was confetti," said congregant Linda Cunningham, whose husband is a minister of adult education at the church. "We just sat there waiting for what comes next, not realizing that he had wounded the pastor."

Winters had stood on an elevated platform to deliver his sermon about finding happiness in the workplace and managed to run halfway down the sanctuary's side aisle before collapsing, Cunningham said.

Two congregants tackled the gunman as he pulled the 4-inch knife, and all three were stabbed, police said. The gunman suffered "a pretty serious wound to the neck" while one congregant had lower back wounds, Trent said.

Congregants knocked the gunman between sets of pews, then held him down until police arrived, said church member Don Bohley, who was just outside the sanctuary when the shooting began.

"People came running out and told us to call 911," said Bohley, 72.

Winters was pronounced dead at Anderson Hospital, hospital spokeswoman Natalie Head said.

Authorities didn't know whether Winters, a married father of two who had led the church for nearly 22 years, knew the gunman. Police described the gunman as a 27-year-old from nearby Troy but would not release his name pending possible charges.

Trent said investigators had not immediately uncovered evidence of a criminal background or mental illness.

"We don't know the relationship (between the gunman and pastor), why he's here or what the circumstances came about that caused him in the first place to be here," said Illinois State Police Master Trooper Ralph Timmins.

The Rev. Mark Jones, another pastor at First Baptist, said he briefly saw the gunman but not the shooting, though he heard a sound like miniature firecrackers.

"We have no idea what this guy's motives were," Jones said outside the church.

The gunman and 39-year-old congregant Terry Bullard underwent surgery at St. Louis University Hospital and were in serious condition Sunday evening, spokeswoman Laura Keller said. The other victim, Keith Melton, was treated and released from Gateway Regional Medical Center.

"I would call it heroic," Trent said. "While many understandably were stuck to their seats, they took to action."

First Baptist had an average attendance of 32 people when Winters became senior pastor in 1987; it now has about 1,200 members, according to the church's Web site. Winters also was former president of the Illinois Baptist State Association and an adjunct professor for Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, according to the site.

"Our great God is not surprised by this, or anything," Nate Adams, executive director of the Illinois Baptist State Association, said in a statement. "That He allows evil and free will to have their way in tragedies like this is a mystery in many ways."

The red brick church sits along a busy two-lane highway on the east side of Maryville, a fast-growing village of more than 7,000 about 20 miles northeast of St. Louis. A farm sits directly across from the church, but subdivisions of newer homes can be seen from every side.

"Things like this just don't happen in Maryville," Mayor Larry Gulledge said. "We've lost one the pillars of our community, one of our leaders."

Sharla Dryden, 62, pulled into the church parking lot for a 9:30 a.m. service Sunday to see "just a lot of chaos, lot of police, fire, and people just devastated."

"I would have been devastated if anyone had been shot, but to hear it was the pastor was terrible," Dryden said. "You just never expect this to happen at a church."

At Winters' two-story brick home in Edwardsville, several friends gathered to pay their respects but declined comment. Family members also declined comment.

A statement on First Baptist's Web site asked for prayers for Winters' family, the congregants who tackled the gunman, the gunman and his family, and church members.

More than 20 investigators remained inside the church hours after the shooting, said First Baptist spokesman Marty King. An evening prayer service was planned for members at Metro Community Church in nearby Edwardsville.

Last month, a man shot and killed himself in front of a cross inside televangelist Robert H. Schuller's Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove, Calif. In November, a gunman killed his estranged wife in a New Jersey church vestibule as Sunday services let out.

In July, two people were killed and six wounded in a shooting rampage at the Tennessee Valley United Unitarian Church in Knoxville, Tenn. An out-of-work truck driver who police say targeted the church for its liberal leanings pleaded guilty to the shootings and was sentenced to life in prison without parole.

Rom 8:31b-34

Brothers and sisters:
If God is for us, who can be against us?
He who did not spare his own Son
but handed him over for us all,
how will he not also give us everything else along with him?

Who will bring a charge against God's chosen ones?
It is God who acquits us, who will condemn?
Christ Jesus it is who diedâ€"or, rather, was raisedâ€"
who also is at the right hand of God,
who indeed intercedes for us.

Swaying room as the music starts
Strangers making the most of the dark
Two by two their bodies become one

I see you through the smokey air
Cant you feel the weight of my stare
Youre so close but still a world away
What Im dying to say, is that

Chorus:

Im crazy for you
Touch me once and youll know its true
I never wanted anyone like this
Its all brand new, youll feel it in my kiss
Im crazy for you, crazy for you

Trying hard to control my heart
I walk over to where you are
Eye to eye we need no words at all

Slowly now we begin to move
Every breath Im deeper into you
Soon we two are standing still in time
If you read my mind, youll see

(chorus)

Its all brand new, Im crazy for you
And you know its true
Im crazy, crazy for you
