History / July 16, 1990 Luzon Earthquake
July 16, 2013, 09:29:03 AM
Today, let us remember those who perished during the great Luzon Earthquake.

On July 16, 1990, at 4:26 PM local time in the Philippines, the Luzon earthquake occurred. Papauwi pa lamang ang mga kabataan nuon galing sa mga paaralan, at nagsisimula na rin magsipag-uwian ang mga namamasukan. "The earthquake produced a 125 km-long ground rupture that stretched from Dingalan, Aurora to Cuyapo, Nueva Ecija as a result of strike-slip movements along the Philippine Fault and the Digdig Fault within the Philippine Fault System.(wiki)" Tinatayang 1,621 na katao ang namatay sa lindol na ito. Inaalala po natin ang ating mga kapatid na nasawi sa trahedyang ito. - Apostles Filipino Catholic Community

MAASIN CITY, Philippinesâ€"Four persons, including two toddlers, were killed while nine others were wounded when a bolo-wielding man reportedly high on drugs went on a hacking spree at past 6:30 p.m. Sunday in Cantutang village, Padre Burgos town, Southern Leyte, according to local authorities.

Records of the Salvacion Oppus Yñiguez Memorial Provincial Hospital identified the four fatalities as Rafael Clava, 2; Leslie Ann Kaindoy, 1; Maria Rodas, 20; and Princess Jabonero, 23.

Clava, Rodas and Princess were dead on arrival at the hospital while Kaindoy died minutes later.
The eight wounded were Wennifredo Jabonero, 51; Aisa Kaindoy, 24; Jolito Mareno, 18; April Rose Salem, 14; Georgina Jabonero, 15; Zenaida Aguelo, 52; Genara Tiu, 48; Roger Salem, 38; and Love Joy Acobo, 22 years old.

Police Officer 2 Zandro Llevares of the Padre Burgos police, who responded to the incident, identified the suspect as Mark Jonnie Pelen.

Wennifredo, who was hacked at the right side of his back, said he was trying to help his daughters Princess and Georgina when Pelen turned on him.

“Somebody heard the suspect say that he wanted to kill somebody that night but they thought he was just joking,” Wennifredo said in an interview.

He said it was a quiet Sunday night and he did not notice Pelen was holding a bolo as the latter was holding it behind his back.

Wennifredo said a relative of his throw a stone at Pelen who then went to a neighbor’s house where he continued hacking.

Pelen was arrested by the responding police. He was locked inside a cell of the Maasin City police station because the relatives of his victims might harm him, the police said.

Weird and Extreme / Re: Sailing Stones
July 15, 2013, 04:58:27 PM
Sailing stones, sliding rocks, and moving rocks all refer to a geological phenomenon where rocks move and inscribe long tracks along a smooth valley floor without human or animal intervention. Tracks from these sliding rocks have been observed and studied in various locations, including Little Bonnie Claire Playa in Nevada,[1] and most notably Racetrack Playa, Death Valley National Park, California where the number and length of tracks are notable. At Racetrack Playa, these tracks have been studied since the early 1900s, yet the origins of stone movement are not confirmed[2] and remain the subject of research for which several hypotheses[3] exist.

The stones move only every two or three years and most tracks develop over three or four years. Stones with rough bottoms leave straight striated tracks while those with smooth bottoms tend to wander. Stones sometimes turn over, exposing another edge to the ground and leaving a different track in the stone's wake.

Trails differ in both direction and length. Rocks that start next to each other may travel parallel for a time, before one abruptly changes direction to the left, right, or even back to the direction from which it came. Trail length also varies â€" two similarly sized and shaped rocks may travel uniformly, then one could move ahead or stop in its track. - Wiki

Valle de la Luna (Valley of the Moon) is located 13 kilometres (8 mi) west of San Pedro de Atacama, Chile in the Cordillera de la Sal, in the Atacama desert of Chile. It has various stone and sand formations which have been carved by wind and water. It has an impressive range of color and texture, looking somewhat similar to the surface of the moon. There are also dry lakes where the composition of salt makes a white covering layer of the area. It presents diverse saline outcrops which appear like man-made sculptures. There are also a great variety of caverns. Valle de la Luna is a part of the Reserva Nacional los Flamencos and was declared a Nature Sanctuary in 1982 for its great natural beauty and strange lunar landscape, from which its name is derived. The valley is also considered one of the driest places on earth, as some areas have not received a single drop of rain in hundreds of years. A prototype for a Mars rover was tested there by scientists because of the valley's dry and forbidding terrains. - Wiki

PAGASA: Potential cyclone nears Albay
July 15, 2013 12:19pm

A potential cyclone, a low-pressure area, hovered near Albay province in the Bicol Region before noon Monday, even as state weather forecasters warned of possible flash floods and landslides that may affect much of the country.

In its 11 a.m. advisory, PAGASA said the LPA was estimated at 410 km east of Legaspi City in Albay province as of 10 a.m.

It said the LPA is embedded along the Intertropical Convergence Zone mainly affecting southern Luzon, the Visayas and western Mindanao.

"Southern Luzon, Visayas and western Mindanao will experience cloudy skies with light to moderate rains becoming heavy during thunderstorms which may trigger flash floods and landslides," it said.

PAGASA advised residents in these areas to "take all the necessary precautionary measures."

Earlier, PAGASA forecaster Elvie Enriquez said the LPA has a small chance of becoming a cyclone.

But should the LPA become a cyclone while inside the Philippine area of responsibility, it will be locally codenamed Isang. â€" RSJ, GMA News

Niay latest news gikan sa BBC about sa damage sa China:

Typhoon Soulik kills three in China's Guangdong region

Three people have died after Typhoon Soulik hit China's southern Guangdong province, state media say.

The storm, which has already killed two others in Taiwan, forced a further 20,000 people to flee their homes, the Xinhua news agency reports.

Some 300,000 people have already been evacuated from eastern China amid warnings of floods and landslides.

Forecasters say the typhoon weakened as it moved inland on Sunday but heavy rain and strong winds persist.

Winds of 119 km/hour (74 mph) had earlier lashed the coastal Fujian Province, said China's National Meteorological Centre.

Emergency response plans were being implemented, said Xinhua, after recent torrential rain reportedly left 200 people dead or missing. Thousands of soldiers were deployed to carry out relief work.

Falling bricks
Typhoon Soulik, the seventh typhoon to hit the Chinese mainland this year, first hit Fujian province on Saturday afternoon.

Waves as high as 10m (32ft) hit Yuhuan County in Zhejiang Province
It moved to Jiangxi province early on Sunday and torrential rains toppled more than 1,000 houses in Guangdong, Xinhua said.

Soulik was downgraded to a tropical storm on Saturday night, the China Meteorological Administration said.

The typhoon earlier led to extensive flooding in Taiwan.

Two people are reported to have died on the island, while more than 8,500 people were evacuated from mountainous and other areas prone to landslides.

A police officer was apparently killed by falling bricks in the capital Taipei. More than 100 others were injured.

In Fujian and Zhejiang, another Chinese coastal province, flights and train services were cancelled and fishing boats called back to shore.

Waves as high as 10m (32ft) hit Yuhuan County in Zhejiang province and authorities warned residents to stay away from the dangerous coastline.

The strong winds and heavy rain have caused electricity disruptions, a run on food and essential supplies in supermarkets, and uprooted trees and signs in some areas.

Typhoons are common during the summer in parts of East Asia, where the warm moist air and low pressure conditions enable tropical cyclones to form.

MANILA, Philippinesâ€"Tax evasion complaints were filed with the Department of Justice (DOJ)Thursday against an Internet company, an estate administrator and lawyer.

In separate complaints, the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) slapped Domain Merchandising Services Inc. (DMSI) and its officers Ma. Milagros Casas, President from 2009 to 2012; Estelita Arada, Treasurer for 2009 to 2011 and Jonalyn Quesada, Treasurer for 2012 with four counts of willful attempt to evade or defeat payment of income tax for 2009 to 2012 and four counts of deliberate failure to supply correct and accurate information in its annual Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for taxable years 2009 to 2012 violation of the National Internal Revenue Code of 1997.

Investigation by the BIR showed that ITRs filed by DMSI showed that its gross income is P9.59 million in 2009; P11.0 million in 2010; P9.81 million in 2011 and P10.07 million in 2012.

A comparison of the documents and information gathered by the BIR, however, showed that DMSI deliberately underdeclared its taxable income by P25.75 million in 2009; P40.74 million in 2010; P41.33 million in 2011 and P36.45 million in 2012.

DMSI has a total tax liability o P77.58 million.

By Prinz P. Magtulis (The Philippine Star) | Updated July 9, 2013 - 12:00am

MANILA, Philippines - Banks are no longer allowed to shut down operations during local holidays without prior notice to the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), a new order said.

Under Circular 802 signed June 21, the central bank has ordered lenders and their extension offices to notify the central bank two days before their closure in the observance of a local holiday within their area.

The order, which will take effect 15 days from yesterday’s release, asked banks and their branches to “submit, either individually or through their head offices” a “prior notice of their intended closure” to the BSP Supervisory Data Center.

The circular covered all banks, their branches and “other banking offices.” BSP officials could not be reached for comment on the new circular.

Prior to this amendment to the Manual Regulations of Banks, lending institutions were only tasked to have their closure during local holidays approved by the banking association where they belong.

Meanwhile, during national holidays declared by presidential proclamations, no prior notice is required for bank closures.

“The required notice (for local holiday closures)...shall be supported by a certification jointly signed by the president of the bank or officer of equivalent position and the head of the branches department,” the central bank explained.

The notice and reason of a bank’s closure should be posted on the banks’ establishment to inform depositors and other banking clients.

Take down billboards, MMDA reminds NCR advertisers amid 'Gorio' threat

Amid rain and bad weather conditions from Tropical Storm Gorio (Rumbia), the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority on Saturday reminded advertisers to take down their billboards.

MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino said billboards should be automatically taken down when Storm Signal No. 1 is over Metro Manila, radio dzBB reported.

Earlier, the MMDA had warned billboards could pose a threat to life and property during stormy weather, as they could collapse and fall on people or vehicles.

Tolentino went around Metro Manila to inspect areas where billboards are installed, to see if they had been taken down.

State weather forecasters had placed Metro Manila under Storm Signal No. 1 as Gorio continued to move northwest after making landfall on Eastern Samar.

Many flights in affected areas had been canceled due to bad weather conditions.

PAGASA said Tropical Storm Gorio is expected to exit the Philippine area of responsibility on Monday. â€" LBG, GMA News
