MANILA, Philippines - (UPDATE - 1:42 p.m.) Police in Davao City rescued Thursday a businesswoman who had been kidnapped in Quezon City. In the course of the rescue, authorities shot dead at least two of the woman's suspected abductors, radio station dzBB reported.
The DZBB report said Sally Chua had been taken to Davao on a roll on-roll off vessel by the 14 kidnappers. There she was forced her to withdraw P15 million from a branch of Allied Bank in downtown Davao.
However, the kidnappers, who were in three brand new Montero SUVs, were intercepted by a joint force of local police and units from Metro Manila before they could leave the bank.
The suspects attempted to shoot it out with the police. Two of them were killed. A third suspect was captured. Chua was ultimately rescued.
Authorities were pursuing the rest of the gang members who managed to escape, and set up checkpoints on their possible routes.
In an interview with the station, Region 11 police director, Chief Superintendent Jaime Morente said it was the victim herself who suggested the payoff be done in Davao City because "she was confident they would be caught here."
He added that the kidnappers had already booked the businesswoman on a flight to Manila Thursday afternoon and even bought "pomelos and other fruit" for her to take with her.
