One year after the tragic events of September 11, 2001, a short note appeared in a U.S. newspaper. It was simple. Quiet. Powerful.

Read it carefully. And if you're someone who often gets frustrated by the little things in life — maybe read it twice.

"You may have heard about the CEO of a major company who survived the attacks simply because it was his turn to take his child to preschool.
Another man lived because it was his day to bring donuts.
One woman was late because her alarm clock didn't go off.
Someone got stuck in traffic on the New Jersey Turnpike.
Another missed the bus.
One spilled coffee on her blouse and had to change.
One person's car wouldn't start.
Someone returned to answer a phone call.
Another's child took too long getting ready.
One simply couldn't catch a cab.

But what struck me most — was a man who survived because that morning, he wore new shoes.
They gave him a blister, so he stopped at a pharmacy to buy a bandage.
That's why he lived."

And now, when I find myself stuck in traffic, missing an elevator, going back home for keys, or answering a phone call at the last second...
I pause and think:

Maybe I'm exactly where I'm meant to be. Maybe this delay is protection I'll never understand.

So next time your morning doesn't go as planned —
The kids are slow to get ready.
You can't find your keys.
You hit every red light...

Don't get angry. Don't panic.
God might be at work. Protecting you in ways you'll never see.

Online gambling undermines Filipino youth – Cayetano

Senator Alan Peter Cayetano on Thursday appealed to the Senate to carefully consider its stance on online gambling, emphasizing the government's trillion-peso investment in education and warning that normalization of gambling and addiction undermines Filipino youth.

"I don't take it against the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) to raise funds, regulate gambling operators, and look into all kinds of gambling and gaming kasi iyan ang trabaho nila. But to regulate the illegal side, this is where the balance of government comes in," the senator said in his opening statement during an August 14, 2025 joint public hearing on online gambling.

"If PAGCOR and the Department of Finance are mostly looking at the revenue side, where is the rest of the government?" he added.

Cayetano, chair of the Senate Banks, Financial Institutions, and Currencies Committee, highlighted the City of Taguig's strict anti-gambling ordinance as a model.

"Taguig is blessed in the late 1990s because we passed an ordinance na bawal ang lahat ng klase ng sugal. When Mayor Lani (Cayetano) became Taguig mayor in 2010, wala po kaming casino. Nilabanan po namin iyan. Personally, I was one who put into law na sa local government, kailangan silang pumayag (sa sugalan). Pati po sabungan at bingo, hindi na namin binigyan ng lisensya," he explained.

The senator said the city's ban aims to instill the values of hard work and financial stewardship in Taguigeño youth.

"This is part of teaching our young people to work hard and have the right values, and that every single peso that God gives them needs to be managed well," he said.

Cayetano pointed out the irony that while traditional modes of gambling — even small-scale games organized during wakes to raise funds for the bereaved — are regulated, online gambling operates with little oversight.

"Nakumbinse na namin na kapag may patay, huwag nang magsugal tulad ng sakla, terembe, monte o anuman ang hilig na sugal before. Andiyan na kasi ang Department of Social Welfare and Development at local government na tumutulong sa panglibing," he said.

He noted that even minor gambling activities like cara y cruz are raided by Taguig police, yet illegal online gambling remains rampant.

"The irony is makikita ng bata na y'ung cara y cruz hinuhuli, pero y'ung iligal na e-sabong at kahit anong gaming ay pwede," he said.

"The other irony is that casinos, sabungan, even the lotto outlets have regulations on how far they should be from churches and schools. But actually, mag-CR lang ang estudyante, pwede na siya gumamit ng cellphone sa online gambling," he added.

A longstanding anti-gambling advocate

Cayetano has a 25-year track record of standing against gambling.

Decades back, he filed the Anti-Gambling Act of 2000 (House Bill No. 12601 – An Act Prohibiting All Forms of Gambling thereby repealing the laws that created the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) and the PAGCOR and revoking their respective Congressional franchises.)

His campaign intensified after the disappearance of 34 cockfighters in 2021 which highlighted the dangers of e-sabong.

Cayetano was also the only senatorial candidate in the 2022 elections who ran with an anti-gambling platform when nobody dared to speak against gambling.

In 2022, the senator filed the Anti-Online Gambling Act and continues to push for stricter regulations.

Just weeks before the 20th Congress convened this month, he called for continued scrutiny of the industry, noting that domestic online gambling continues to thrive despite the ban on
Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs).

Now in the 20th Congress, he is simultaneously pushing for a total ban on online gambling through the Ban on Online Gambling Act (Senate Bill No. 30) a priority measure he filed with Senator Pia Cayetano, and the Anti-Online Gambling Advertisement Act of 2025 (Senate Bill No.109) which seeks to ban gambling promotions across all media platforms. ###

"I don't take it against the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) to raise funds, regulate gambling operators, and look into all kinds of gambling and gaming kasi iyan ang trabaho nila. But to regulate the illegal side, this is where the balance of government comes in," pahayag ng senador sa kanyang opening statement sa August 14, 2025 joint public hearing tungkol sa online gambling.

"If PAGCOR and the Department of Finance are mostly looking at the revenue side, where is the rest of the government?" dagdag niya.

Pati po sabungan at bingo, hindi na namin binigyan ng lisensya," paliwanag niya.

Ayon sa senador, layong itanim ng ordinansa sa kabataang Taguigeño ang kahalagahan ng pagsisikap at tamang pangangasiwa ng pera.

"This is part of teaching our young people to work hard and have the right values, and that every single peso that God gives them needs to be managed well," wika niya.

"The other irony is that casinos, sabungan, even the lotto outlets have regulations on how far they should be from churches and schools. But actually, mag-CR lang ang estudyante, pwede na siya gumamit ng cellphone sa online gambling," dagdag niya.

Matagal nang kampeon laban sa pagsusugal

Dalawampu't limang taon nang tumitindig si Cayetano laban sa sugal.

Ilang dekada na ang nakalipas nang una niyang inihain  ang Anti-Gambling Act of 2000 (House Bill No. 12601 – An Act Prohibiting All Forms of Gambling thereby repealing the laws that created the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) and the PAGCOR and revoking their respective Congressional franchises.)

ASG try to abduct foreign journalists (news archive February 2002)
ZAMBOANGA -- Abu Sayyaf rebels attempted to abduct two foreign freelance journalists covering joint US-Philippine military training exercises in the southern Philippines, the military said yesterday.

The two were Canadian Christopher Johnson and Urban Hamid, said to be a French national of Egyptian descent, military officials said.

The pair, who arrived here last week, were preparing to board a ferry bound for nearby Basilan island on Friday when two men posing as army soldiers approached them and said they had been sent to assist the reporters.

The journalists became suspicious and contacted the military, who told them to return immediately to their hotel in Zamboanga city.

"The two journalists declined (the invitation of the suspects) after sensing danger because the men failed to show their identification cards," said Lieutenant Colonel Fredesvindo Covarrubias, commander of the southern command's civil relations group.

"Intelligence reports indicated that the men are Abu Sayyaf members trying to lure the (journalists)," said Captain Harold Cabunoc, commander of the army scout ranger unit in Basilan.

"We did not send anybody to fetch foreign journalists," he said.

The military last week warned foreign journalists against venturing to Basilan saying they faced the threat of being kidnapped by the Muslim Abu Sayyaf group, holding a US Christian missionary couple and a Filipina hostage. Dozens of foreign reporters have been flocking to this southern Philippine port city to cover the six-month US-Philippine exercises which began last month. The exercises are aimed at helping the Philippines crush the Abu Sayyaf, a small group of Islamic militants linked to the al-Qaeda network of Osama bin Laden, the alleged terrorist mastermind of the September 11 attacks in the US.

Officials said American special forces "advisers" would be joining Filipino soldiers in patrols against the Abu Sayyaf in Basilan. The US soldiers would be armed and could fire back if attacked.

In 2000, the Abu Sayyaf snatched several foreign journalists who were covering a hostage crisis involving dozens of foreign tourists in nearby Jolo island. Presidential spokesman Rigoberto Tiglao said Sunday the threat against journalists was real and the military warning was not meant to scare reporters. He said that other Muslim armed groups operating in the area could also try to "take foreigners hostages."

"Even in Pakistan, that has become a big problem because a Wall Street reporter has been abducted," Tiglao said, referring to US national Daniel Pearl, who vanished last month while exploring the underworld of Islamic militants in Pakistan's volatile southern city of Karachi.*AFP

Philippine Archive / Bindoy SK in Negros Oriental

Dads oust Bindoy SK head
BY NONIE VIRAY, news archive in February 2002
The Bindoy Sangguniang Bayan has passed a resolution removing Michael Mana-ay, Sangguniang Kabataan federation president, for absence without official leave, effective immediately.

The town council passed resolution 598, series of 2001 late last year but forwarded it only recently to the Provincial Board for confirmation.

Mana-ay, the son of former town Mayor Jeceju Mana-ay, went AWOL for several months. Later on he revealed that he went abroad.

A source, however, said the council reportedly found out that Mana-ay was only staying in Manila all that time.

Mana-ay also reportedly started working in the office of Rep. Jacinto Paras as liaison officer after last year's elections. His act deprived the SK of representation in the town council.

The town council resolution is believed to be actually only a formality so that a vacancy could be declared and a replacement named.

Meanwhile, the Sangguniang Panlalawigan approved P896,420 for the purchase of the two six-wheeler trucks to replace its dilapidated dump truck.

The dump trucks will bolster the implementation of the farm-to-market roads in Negros Oriental, government officials said.*NV

Bohol News Archive / Unitop Robbery in Bohol
August 19, 2025, 09:12:49 AM
December 2006 News via Bohol Sunday Post Newspaper

CITY Mayor Dan Lim minced no words in describing the Thursday robbery involving the ill-fated Unitop General Merchandizing: it was an inside job. Only three days earlier or on Christmas Day, the Unitop branch in Ormoc City went up in flames killing 26 persons. The Tagbilaran robbery was the latest in a series of break-ins and hold ups in this city. Executed in daring fashion, the latest caper netted P500,000 in loot topping the recent hold up of a gasoline station owned by George Lim where P20,000 was lost to the suspects. Both robberies were pulled off in broad daylight. According to Mayor Lim, he came to the conclusion that it was an inside job after he invited for interview the Unitop secretary identified as Rufa Balingit and the store manager Robert Chua. Also invited for questioning by Mayor Lim was Rene Raut-raut of Bilar said to be the live-in partner of Balingit.
Balingit a trusted employee of the store is familiar with the establishment's daily cash in and cash out. She also knows the store's deposit schedules and the banks the supposed deposits are going to be made. As the store's way of avoiding a pattern, the management made it as a policy to deposit in different banks. A day before the Unitop robbery, the combined sales after a four-day holiday (from Dec. 23-26) were deposited without any hitch. It was not known how much in store sales were deposited that day but according to police sources, it went on smoothly because management decided to allow the guard to take the company's service van in going to the bank instead of the usual motorcycle. This time also, Balingit was waiting for the guard at the bank Deposit time, the following day was a different story. Balingit and the security guard identified as Dalmacio Casimsiman, Jr. walked the short distance from the Unitop Store to the FCB downtown branch, one of the depository banks.
This time, the robbers, waited for their prey near the Caltex Station at the corner of CPG Avenue and M.H.del Pilar St . The bank is located just beside the gasoline station. According to police sources, the store has an average of from P100,000 to P200,000 in daily sales but Thursday's take was boosted by the previous day's 5:00 pm supposed deposit. Balingit was supposed to deposit the late afternoon sales of the store but said she forgot to do her routine. The store deposits its sales for the day at least three times and the last is at 5:00 pm. Police are looking at the possibility that a burglary in the store sometime last June may have a connection with Thursday's robbery. In that break-in, some P400,000 were lost to the burglars.
HOME IN A MORBID PACKAGE
For the ill-starred security guard, it would be a different reunion when his family gathers home January 1, 2007. Certainly it's no good year to start with Casimsiman, Jr. coming to Tangkigan, Mabini as a package, not with the frilly holiday wrapper but in something more morbid. Commenting on the spate of robberies in this city, Police Chief Jacinto Cesar said they are leaving no stones unturned until the identities of the culprits could be opened. Cesar, who used to be head of intelligence at the provincial police office said the criminals did not even care to hide their faces, while the two casually walked towards the waiting motorcycle a few meters away. The incident happened along the busy Carlos P. Garcia Avenue . According to police re[ports, the security guard was escorting Balingit and was a few steps from the bank they would be transacting their business when the robbers announced the hold-up. When Balingit refused to hand in the bag and instead hid behind the guard, one gunman shot the secretary and missed by the skin of her teeth. The bullet entered the guard's breast, exited his back. Witnesses said the robbers then grabbed the bag and casually crossed the road to their get-away vehicle. In less than two minutes, the robbery was over with the suspects fleeing aboard a motorcycle. The guard sustained a gunshot wound in his breast and back. He, however, expired the following day at the Gov. Celestino Gallares Memorial Hospital.

Article written by Dr. Luis Rojas Marcos, Psychiatrist.

Dr. Ovidio, Pediatric Neurologist, warns about a silent tragedy unfolding in our homes today.

There is a silent tragedy unfolding in our homes today, and it concerns our most precious jewels: our children. Our children are in a devastating emotional state!. Over the past 15 years, researchers have gifted us increasingly alarming statistics about an acute and steady increase in childhood mental illness that is now reaching epidemic proportions:

The statistics don't lie:
• 1 in 5 children has mental health problems
• A 43% increase in ADHD has been noticed
• A 37% increase in teenage depression has been noticed
• A 200% increase in the suicide rate in children aged 10 to 14 has been noticed

What is going on and what are we doing wrong?.

Children today are being over-stimulated and over-gifted with material objects, but are deprived of the fundamentals of a healthy childhood, such as:

• Emotionally available parents
• Clearly Defined Boundaries
• Responsibilities
• Balanced nutrition and adequate sleep
• Movement in general but especially outdoors
• Creative play, social interaction, unstructured play opportunities and spaces for boredom

On the other hand, these last few years have been filled with children of:
• Digitally Distracted Parents
• Forgiving and permissive parents who let children "rule the world" and be the ones who make the rules
• A sense of entitlement, of deserving everything without earning it or being responsible for getting it
• Poor sleep and unbalanced nutrition
• A sedentary lifestyle
• Endless stimulation, technological nannies, instant gratification and absence of dull moments

What to do?
If we want our children to be happy and healthy individuals, we need to wake up and get back to the basics. It's still possible! Many families see immediate improvement after weeks of implementing the following recommendations:

• Set limits and remember that you are the captain of the ship. Your kids will feel safer knowing you have the control of the helm.
• Offer children a balanced lifestyle full of what children NEED, not just what they WANT. Don't be afraid to say "no" to your kids if what they want isn't what they need.
• Provide nutritious food and limit junk food.
• Spend at least one hour a day outdoors doing activities such as: cycling, hiking, fishing, bird/insect watching
• Enjoy a daily family dinner without smartphones or technology distracting them.
• Play board games as a family or if the children are too young for board games, let them lead their interests and let them be the ones who rule the game
• Involve your children in some task or household chores according to their age (folding clothes, sorting toys, hanging clothes, unpacking groceries, setting the table, feeding the dog, etc. )
• Implement a consistent sleep routine to ensure your child gets enough sleep. The timetables will be even more important for school-age children.
• Teach responsibility and independence. Don't overprotect them against any frustration or any mistake. Making mistakes will help you develop resilience and learn to overcome life's challenges,
• Do not carry your children's backpack, do not take their backpacks, do not take them the homework they forgot, do not peel their bananas or oranges if they can do it by themselves (4-5 years). Instead of giving them the fish, teach them how to fish.
• Teach them to wait and delay gratification.
• Provide opportunities for "boredom", because boredom is the moment when creativity awakens. Doesn't feel responsible for always keeping the kids entertained.
• Do not use technology as a cure for boredom, nor offer it to the first second of inactivity.
• Avoid the use of technology during meals, in cars, restaurants, shopping centers. Use these moments as opportunities to socialize by training the brains to know how to function when they are in the mood: "boredom"
• Help them create a "jar of boredom" with activity ideas for when they are bored.
• Be emotionally available to connect with children and teach them self-regulation and social skills:
• Turn off phones at night when kids have to go to bed to avoid digital distraction.
• Become an emotional regulator or coach for your children. Teach them to acknowledge and manage their own frustrations and anger.
• Teach them to greet, to take turns, to share without anything, to say thank you and please, to acknowledge the mistake and apologize (don't force them), be a model of all those values you instill.
• Connect emotionally – smile, hug, kiss, tickle, read, dance, jump, play or crawl with them.

IN PHOTOS: Finance Secretary Ralph G. Recto has urged members of Congress to adhere to the refined Medium-Term Fiscal Program (MTFP) in the 2026 budget deliberations and ensure that next year's General Appropriations Act (GAA) works as hard as the people who fund it––the taxpayers.

This was stressed by the Finance Chief during the Development Budget Coordination Committee (DBCC) Briefing for the  House Committee on Appropriations on the Fiscal Year 2026 National Budget on August 18, 2025.

The Medium-Term Fiscal Framework (MTFF), first crafted in 2022, was recalibrated by Secretary Recto in 2024 to keep goals attainable, realistic, adaptive to external challenges, and supportive of sustainable growth.

The refined Framework now charts a realistic path to gradually reduce the country's deficit and debt, while creating more jobs, raising incomes, and lifting millions of Filipinos out of poverty.

During the briefing, the Finance Chief reported the strength of the Philippine economy, including its strong revenue stream, narrowing fiscal deficit, and improved spending focused on key priorities, among others.

"The Philippines has everything a country could dream of—abundant natural resources, an educated population fluent in English, a strategic location at the heart of Asia—but what holds this country back is its politics."

"You cannot run a race if every step must pass through multiple gates of permission, and if the referee stands on his friend's side."

Then a Japanese journalist raised his hand. "If you were tasked with fixing the Philippines, where would you start?"

"Start by having leaders who do not steal. Then make the people believe that the rules truly apply to everyone."

Lee once said, "A small country like Singapore cannot afford even a single misstep."

History / Story of William Tell
August 17, 2025, 09:03:45 AM

The story of William Tell is fascinating, but its origins are not entirely clear. The first written accounts, like the 'White Book of Sarnen,' don't appear until the 1470s, over 150 years after the events supposedly took place.
Interestingly, similar tales exist in other cultures. A Danish legend of a hero named Palnatoke tells of a nearly identical feat, suggesting the Swiss may have adapted a popular European folktale.
Regardless of its origin, the legend's impact is undeniable. It inspired Gioachino Rossini's famous 'William Tell Overture' in 1829, a piece of music many of us recognize even today.
In Altdorf, Switzerland, a large monument was erected in 1895 to honor him. It shows Tell with his crossbow and his son, a permanent reminder of the values of freedom and courage he represents.

Anodyne
By Yusef Komunyakaa

I love how it swells
into a temple where it is
held prisoner, where the god
of blame resides. I love
slopes & peaks, the secret
paths that make me selfish.
I love my crooked feet
shaped by vanity & work
shoes made to outlast
belief. The hardness
coupling milk it can't
fashion. I love the lips,
salt & honeycomb on the tongue.
The hair holding off rain
& snow. The white moons
on my fingernails. I love
how everything begs
blood into song & prayer
inside an egg. A ghost
hums through my bones
like Pan's midnight flute
shaping internal laws
beside a troubled river.
I love this body
made to weather the storm
in the brain, raised
out of the deep smell
of fish & water hyacinth,
out of rapture & the first
regret. I love my big hands.
I love it clear down to the soft
quick motor of each breath,
the liver's ten kinds of desire
& the kidney's lust for sugar.
This skin, this sac of dung
& joy, this spleen floating
like a compass needle inside
nighttime, always divining
West Africa's dusty horizon.
I love the birthmark
posed like a fighting cock
on my right shoulder blade.
I love this body, this
solo & ragtime jubilee
behind the left nipple,
because I know I was born
to wear out at least
one hundred angels.

Facing It
By Yusef Komunyakaa
Listen
My black face fades,
hiding inside the black granite.
I said I wouldn't,
dammit: No tears.
I'm stone. I'm flesh.
My clouded reflection eyes me
like a bird of prey, the profile of night
slanted against morning. I turn
this way--the stone lets me go.
I turn that way--I'm inside
the Vietnam Veterans Memorial
again, depending on the light
to make a difference.
I go down the 58,022 names,
half-expecting to find
my own in letters like smoke.
I touch the name Andrew Johnson;
I see the booby trap's white flash.
Names shimmer on a woman's blouse
but when she walks away
the names stay on the wall.
Brushstrokes flash, a red bird's
wings cutting across my stare.
The sky. A plane in the sky.
A white vet's image floats
closer to me, then his pale eyes
look through mine. I'm a window.
He's lost his right arm
inside the stone. In the black mirror
a woman's trying to erase names:
No, she's brushing a boy's hair.

Rhythm Method
By Yusef Komunyakaa
Listen
If you were sealed inside a box
within a box deep in a forest,
with no birdsongs, no crickets
rubbing legs together, no leaves
letting go of mottled branches,
you'd still hear the rhythm
of your heart. A red tide
of beached fish oscillates in sand,
copulating beneath a full moon,
& we can call this the first
rhythm because sex is what
nudged the tongue awake
& taught the hand to hit
drums & embrace reed flutes
before they were worked
from wood & myth. Up
& down, in & out, the piston
drives a dream home. Water
drips till it sculpts a cup
into a slab of stone.
At first, no bigger
than a thimble, it holds
joy, but grows to measure
the rhythm of loneliness
that melts sugar in tea.
There's a season for snakes
to shed rainbows on the grass,
for locust to chant out of the dunghill.
Oh yes, oh yes, oh yes, oh yes
is a confirmation the skin
sings to hands. The Mantra
of spring rain opens the rose
& spider lily into shadow,
& someone plays the bones
till they rise & live
again. We know the whole weight
depends on small silences
we fit outselves into.
High heels at daybreak
is the saddest refrain
If you can see blues
in the ocean, light & dark
can feel worms ease through
a subterranean path
beneath each footstep,
Baby, you got rhythm.

Deck
By Yusef Komunyakaa
Listen
I have almost nailed my left thumb to the 2 x 4 brace that holds the deck
together. This Saturday morning in June, I have sawed 2 x 6s, T-squared
and leveled everything with three bubbles sealed in green glass, and now
the sweat on my tongue tastes like what I am. I know I'm alone, using
leverage to swing the long boards into place, but at times it seems as if
there are two of us working side by side like old lovers guessing each other's
moves.

This hammer is the only thing I own of yours, and it makes me feel I have
carpentered for years. Even the crooked nails are going in straight. The
handsaw glides through grease. The toenailed stubs hold. The deck has
risen up around me, and now it's strong enough to support my weight, to
not sway with this old, silly, wrong-footed dance I'm about to throw my
whole body into.

Plumbed from sky to ground, this morning's work can take nearly any-
thing! With so much uproar and punishment, footwork and euphoria, I'm
almost happy this Saturday.

I walk back inside and here you are. Plain and simple as the sunlight on the
tools outside. Daddy, if you'd come back a week ago, or day before yester-
day, I would have been ready to sit down and have a long talk with you.
There were things I wanted to say. So many questions I wanted to ask, but
now they've been answered with as much salt and truth as we can expect
from the living.

A Reed Boat
By Yusef Komunyakaa
Listen
The boat's tarred and shellacked to a water-repellent finish, just sway-
dancing with the current's ebb, light as a woman in love. It pushes off
again, cutting through lotus blossoms, sediment, guilt, unforgivable dark-
ness. Anything with half a root or heart could grow in this lagoon.

There's a pull against what's hidden from day, all that hurts. At dawn the
gatherer's shadow backstrokes across water, an instrument tuned for gods
and monsters in the murky kingdom below. Blossoms lean into his fast
hands, as if snapping themselves in half, giving in to some law.

Slow, rhetorical light cuts between night and day, like nude bathers em-
bracing. The boat nudges deeper, with the ease of silverfish. I know by his
fluid movements, there isn't the shadow of a bomber on the water any-
more, gliding like a dream of death. Mystery grows out of the decay of
dead things--each blossom a kiss from the unknown.

When I stand on the steps of Hanoi's West Lake Guest House, feeling that
I am watched as I gaze at the boatman, it's hard to act like we're the only
two left in the world. He balances on his boat of Ra, turning left and right,
reaching through and beyond, as if the day is a woman he can pull into his
arms.

Ode To The Drum
By Yusef Komunyakaa
Listen
Gazelle, I killed you
for your skin's exquisite
touch, for how easy it is
to be nailed to a board
weathered raw as white
butcher paper. Last night
I heard my daughter praying
for the meat here at my feet.
You know it wasn't anger
that made me stop my heart
till the hammer fell. Weeks
ago, I broke you as a woman
once shattered me into a song
beneath her weight, before
you slouched into that
grassy hush. But now
I'm tightening lashes,
shaping hide as if around
a ribcage, stretched
like five bowstrings.
Ghosts cannot slip back
inside the body's drum.
You've been seasoned
by wind, dusk & sunlight.
Pressure can make everything
whole again, brass nails
tacked into the ebony wood
your face has been carved
five times. I have to drive
trouble from the valley.
Trouble in the hills.
Trouble on the river
too. There's no kola nut,
palm wine, fish, salt,
or calabash. Kadoom.
Kadoom. Kadoom. Ka-
doooom. Kadoom. Now
I have beaten a song back into you,
rise & walk away like a panther.

the need gotta be
so deep words can't
answer simple questions
all night long notes
stumble off the tongue
& color the air indigo
so deep fragments of gut
& flesh cling to the song
you gotta get into it
so deep salt crystalizes on eyelashes
the need gotta be
so deep you can vomit up ghosts
& not feel broken
till you are no more
than a half ounce of gold
in painful brightness
you gotta get into it
blow that saxophone
so deep all the sex & dope in this world
can't erase your need
to howl against the sky
the need gotta be
so deep you can't
just wiggle your hips
& rise up out of it
chaos in the cosmos
modern man in the pepperpot
you gotta get hooked
into every hungry groove
so deep the bomb locked
in rust opens like a fist
into it into it so deep
rhythm is pre-memory
the need gotta be basic
animal need to see
& know the terror
we are made of honey
cause if you wanna dance
this boogie be ready
to let the devil use your head
for a drum

Thanks
By Yusef Komunyakaa
Listen
Thanks for the tree
between me & a sniper's bullet.
I don't know what made the grass
sway seconds before the Viet Cong
raised his soundless rifle.
Some voice always followed,
telling me which foot
to put down first.
Thanks for deflecting the ricochet
against that anarchy of dusk.
I was back in San Francisco
wrapped up in a woman's wild colors,
causing some dark bird's love call
to be shattered by daylight
when my hands reached up
& pulled a branch away
from my face. Thanks
for the vague white flower
that pointed to the gleaming metal
reflecting how it is to be broken
like mist over the grass,
as we played some deadly
game for blind gods.
What made me spot the monarch
writhing on a single thread
tied to a farmer's gate,
holding the day together
like an unfingered guitar string,
is beyond me. Maybe the hills
grew weary & leaned a little in the heat.
Again, thanks for the dud
hand grenade tossed at my feet
outside Chu Lai. I'm still
falling through its silence.
I don't know why the intrepid
sun touched the bayonet,
but I know that something
stood among those lost trees
& moved only when I moved.

Prisoners
By Yusef Komunyakaa
Listen
Usually at the helipad
I see them stumble-dance
across the hot asphalt
with crokersacks over their heads,
moving toward the interrogation huts,
thin-framed as box kites
of sticks & black silk
anticipating a hard wind
that'll tug & snatch them
out into space. I think
some must be laughing
under their dust-colored hoods,
knowing rockets are aimed
at Chu Lai--that the water's
evaporating & soon the nail
will make contact with metal.
How can anyone anywhere love
these half-broken figures
bent under the sky's brightness?
The weight they carry
is the soil we tread night & day.
Who can cry for them?
I've heard the old ones
are the hardest to break.
An arm twist, a combat boot
against the skull, a .45
jabbed into the mouth, nothing
works. When they start talking
with ancestors faint as camphor
smoke in pagodas, you know
you'll have to kill them
to get an answer.
Sunlight throws
scythes against the afternoon.
Everything's a heat mirage; a river
tugs at their slow feet.
I stand alone & amazed,
with a pill-happy door gunner
signaling for me to board the Cobra.
I remember how one day
I almost bowed to such figures
walking toward me, under
a corporal's ironclad stare.
I can't say why.
From a half-mile away
trees huddle together,
& the prisoners look like
marionettes hooked to strings of light

Tu Do Street
By Yusef Komunyakaa
Listen
Music divides the evening.
I close my eyes & can see
men drawing lines in the dust.
America pushes through the membrane
of mist & smoke, & I'm a small boy
again in Bogalusa. White Only
signs & Hank Snow. But tonight
I walk into a place where bar girls
fade like tropical birds. When
I order a beer, the mama-san
behind the counter acts as if she
can't understand, while her eyes
skirt each white face, as Hank Williams
calls from the psychedelic jukebox.
We have played Judas where
only machine-gun fire brings us
together. Down the street
black GIs hold to their turf also.
An off-limits sign pulls me
deeper into alleys, as I look
for a softness behind these voices
wounded by their beauty & war.
Back in the bush at Dak To
& Khe Sanh, we fought
the brothers of these women
we now run to hold in our arms.
There's more than a nation
inside us, as black & white
soldiers touch the same lovers
minutes apart, tasting
each other's breath,
without knowing these rooms
run into each other like tunnels
leading to the underworld.

A Break From The Bush
By Yusef Komunyakaa
Listen
The South China Sea
drives in another herd.
The volleyball's a punching bag:
Clem's already lost a tooth
& Johnny's left eye is swollen shut.
Frozen airlifted steaks burn
on a wire grill, & miles away
machine guns can be heard.
Pretending we're somewhere else,
we play harder.
Lee Otis, the point man,
high on Buddha grass,
buries himself up to his neck
in sand. "Can you see me now?
In this spot they gonna build
a Hilton. Invest in Paradise.
Bang, bozos! You're dead."
Frenchie's cassette player
unravels Hendrix's "Purple Haze."
Snake, 17, from Daytona,
sits at the water's edge,
the ash on his cigarette
pointing to the ground
like a crooked finger. CJ,
who in three days will trip
a fragmentation mine,
runs after the ball
into the whitecaps,
laughing

He danced with tall grass
for a moment, like he was swaying
with a woman. Our gun barrels
glowed white-hot.
When I got to him,
a blue halo
of flies had already claimed him.
I pulled the crumbed photograph
from his fingers.
There's no other way
to say this: I fell in love.
The morning cleared again,
except for a distant mortar
& somewhere choppers taking off.
I slid the wallet into his pocket
& turned him over, so he wouldn't be
kissing the ground.

You And I Are Disappearing--Bjorn Hakansson
By Yusef Komunyakaa
Listen
The cry I bring down from the hills
belongs to a girl still burning
inside my head. At daybreak
she burns like a piece of paper. She burns like foxfire
in a thigh-shaped valley.
A skirt of flames
dances around her
at dusk.
We stand with our handshanging at our sides,
while she burns
like a sack of dry ice.She burns like oil on water.
She burns like a cattail torch
dipped in gasoline.
She glows like the fat tip
of a banker's cigar,
silent as quicksilver.A tiger under a rainbow
    at nightfall.
She burns like a shot glass of vodka.
She burns like a field of poppies
at the edge of a rain forest.
She rises like dragonsmoke
    to my nostrils.
She burns like a burning bush
driven by a godawful wind.

Camouflaging The Chimera
By Yusef Komunyakaa
Listen
We tied branches to our helmets.
We painted our faces & rifles
with mud from a riverbank,

blades of grass hung from the pockets
of our tiger suits. We wove
ourselves into the terrain,
content to be a hummingbird's target.

We hugged bamboo & leaned
against a breeze off the river,
slow-dragging with ghosts

from Saigon to Bangkok,
with women left in doorways
reaching in from America.
We aimed at dark-hearted songbirds.

In our way station of shadows
rock apes tried to blow our cover
throwing stones at the sunset. Chameleons

crawled our spines, changing from day
to night: green to gold,
gold to black. But we waited
till the moon touched metal,

till something almost broke
inside us. VC struggled
with the hillside, like black silk

wrestling iron through grass.
We weren't there. The river ran
through our bones. Small animals took refuge
against our bodies; we held our breath,

ready to spring the L-shaped
ambush, as a world revolved
under each man's eyelid.

Slamdunk
By Yusef Komunyakaa
Listen
Fast breaks. Lay ups. With Mercury's
Insignia on our sneakers,
We outmaneuvered the footwork
Of bad angels. Nothing but a hot
Swish of strings like silk
Ten feet out. In the roundhouse
Labyrinth our bodies
Created, we could almost
Last forever, poised in midair
Like storybook sea monsters.
A high note hung there
A long second. Off
The rim. We'd corkscrew
Up & dunk balls that exploded
The skullcap of hope & good
Intention. Bug-eyed, lanky,
All hands & feet . . . sprung rhythm.
We were metaphysical when girls
Cheered on the sidelines.
Tangled up in a falling,
Muscles were a bright motor
Double-flashing to the metal hoop
Nailed to our oak.
When Sonny Boy's mama died
He played nonstop all day, so hard
Our backboard splintered.
Glistening with sweat, we jibed
& rolled the ball off our
Fingertips. Trouble
Was there slapping a blackjack
Against an open palm.
Dribble, drive to the inside, feint,
& glide like a sparrow hawk.
Lay ups. Fast breaks.
We had moves we didn't know
We had. Our bodies spun
On swivels of bone & faith,
Through a lyric slipknot
Of joy, & we knew we were
Beautiful & dangerous.

Believing In Iron
By Yusef Komunyakaa
Listen
The hills my brothers & I created
never balanced, & it took years
To discover how the world worked.
We could look at a tree of blackbirds
& tell you how many were there,
But with the scrap dealer
Our math was always off.
Weeks of lifting & grunting
Never added up to much,
But we couldn't stop
Believing in iron.
Abandoned trucks & cars
Were held to the ground
By thick, nostalgic fingers of vines
Strong as a dozen sharecroppers.
We'd return with our wheelbarrow
Groaning under a new load,
Yet tiger lilies lived better
In their languid, August domain.
Among paper & Coke bottles
Foundry smoke erased sunsets,
& we couldn't believe iron
Left men bent so close to the earth
As if the ore under their breath
Weighed down the gray sky.
Sometimes I dreamt how our hills
Washed into a sea of metal,
How it all became an anchor
For a warship or bomber
Out over trees with blooms
Too red to look at.

My Father's Love Letters
By Yusef Komunyakaa
Listen
On Fridays he'd open a can of Jax
After coming home from the mill,
& ask me to write a letter to my mother
Who sent postcards of desert flowers
Taller than men. He would beg,
Promising to never beat her
Again. Somehow I was happy
She had gone, & sometimes wanted
To slip in a reminder, how Mary Lou
Williams' "Polka Dots & Moonbeams"
Never made the swelling go down.
His carpenter's apron always bulged
With old nails, a claw hammer
Looped at his side & extension cords
Coiled around his feet.
Words rolled from under the pressure
Of my ballpoint: Love,
Baby, Honey, Please.
We sat in the quiet brutality
Of voltage meters & pipe threaders,
Lost between sentences . . .
The gleam of a five-pound wedge
On the concrete floor
Pulled a sunset
Through the doorway of his toolshed.
I wondered if she laughed
& held them over a gas burner.
My father could only sign
His name, but he'd look at blueprints
& say how many bricks
Formed each wall. This man,
Who stole roses & hyacinth
For his yard, would stand there
With eyes closed & fists balled,
Laboring over a simple word, almost
Redeemed by what he tried to say.

When the plowblade struck
An old stump hiding under
The soil like a beggar's
Rotten tooth, they swarmed up
& Mister Jackson left the plow
Wedged like a whaler's harpoon.
The horse was midnight
Against dusk, tethered to somebody's
Pocketwatch. He shivered, but not
The way women shook their heads
Before mirrors at the five
& dime--a deeper connection
To the low field's evening star.
He stood there, in tracechains,
Lathered in froth, just
Stopped by a great, goofy
Calmness. He whinnied
Once, & then the whole
Beautiful, blue-black sky
Fell on his back.

Blackberries
By Yusef Komunyakaa
Listen
They left my hands like a printer's
Or thief's before a police blotter
& pulled me into early morning's
Terrestrial sweetness, so thick
The damp ground was consecrated
Where they fell among a garland of thorns.

Although I could smell old lime-covered
History, at ten I'd still hold out my hands
& berries fell into them. Eating from one
& filling a half gallon with the other,
I ate the mythology & dreamt
Of pies & cobbler, almost

Needful as forgiveness. My bird dog Spot
Eyed blue jays & thrashers. The mud frogs
In rich blackness, hid from daylight.
An hour later, beside City Limits Road
I balanced a gleaming can in each hand,
Limboed between worlds, repeating one dollar.

The big blue car made me sweat.
Wintertime crawled out of the windows.
When I leaned closer I saw the boy
& girl my age, in the wide back seat
Smirking, & it was then I remembered my fingers
Burning with thorns among berries too ripe to touch.

The Smoke House
By Yusef Komunyakaa
Listen
In the hickory scent
Among slabs of pork
Glistening with salt,
I played Indian
In a headdress of redbird feathers
& brass buttons
Off my mother's winter coat.
Smoke wove
A thread of fire through meat, into December
& January. The dead weight
Of the place hung around me,
Strung up with sweetgrass.
The hog had been sectioned,
A map scored into skin;
Opened like love,
From snout to tail,
The goodness
No longer true to each bone.
I was a wizard
In that hazy world,
& knew I could cut
Slivers of meat till my heart
Grew more human & flawed.

I am five,
    Wading out into deep
Sunny grass,Unmindful of snakes
    & yellowjackets, out
To the yellow flowersQuivering in sluggish heat.
    Don't mess with me
'Cause I have my Lone RangerSix-shooter. I can hurt
    You with questions
Like silver bullets. The tall flowers in my dreams are
Big as the First State Bank,
& they eat all the peopleExcept the ones I love.
    They have women's names,
With mouths like whereBabies come from. I a five.
    I'll dance for you
If you close your eyes. NoPeeping through your fingers.
    I don't supposed to be
This close to the tracks. One afternoon I saw
What a train did to a cow.
Sometimes I stand so closeI can see the eyes
    Of men hiding in boxcars.
Sometimes they wave& holler for me to get back. I laugh
    When trains make the dogs
Howl. Their ears hurt.I also know bees
    Can't live without flowers.
I wonder why DaddyCalls Mama honey.
All the bees in the world
Live in little white housesExcept the ones in these flowers.
    All sticky & sweet inside.
I wonder what death tastes like.Sometimes I toss the butterflies
    Back into the air.
I wish I knew whyThe music in my head
    Makes me scared.
But I know thingsI don't supposed to know.
    I could start walking
& never stop.These yellow flowers
    Go on forever.
Almost to Detroit.Almost to the sea.
My mama says I'm a mistake.
That I made her a bad girl.My playhouse is underneath
Our house, & I hear people
Telling each other secrets.

Lime
By Yusef Komunyakaa
Listen
The victorious army marches into the city,
& not far behind tarries a throng of women
Who slept with the enemy on the edge
Of battlemnets. The stunned morning

Opens into a dust cloud of hooves
& drums. Some new priests cradle
Stone tablets, & others are poised
With raised mallets in a forest of defeated

Statuaray. Of course, behind them
Linger the turncoats & pious
Merchants of lime. What's Greek
Is forged into Roman; what's Roman

Is hammered into a ceremony of birds
Headed east. Whatever is marble
Burns in the lime kilns because
Someone dreams of a domed bathhouse.

Ode To The Racoon
By Yusef Komunyakaa
Listen
I have witnessed you
Wash your paws at the altar
Of your moony reflection
Halved by a dogwood.

People say grace over you
In the backwoods - garnished
With sweet potatoes & red peppers.
I have seen you fold paws across

Ringed eyes to shield out
Flashlights, as stout men
Climbed oaks to shake you down
For the dogs. Raised on hind legs,

With fruity entrails perfuming
The cold night air, you fought
Till men kicked the dogs off
To save you for their blessings.

Ode To The Maggot
By Yusef Komunyakaa
Listen
Brother of the blowfly
And godhead, you work magic
Over battlefields,
In slabs of bad pork

And flophouses. Yes, you
Go to the root of all things.
You are sound & mathematical.
Jesus, Christ, you're merciless

With the truth. Ontological & lustrous,
You cast spells on beggars & kings
Behind the stone door of Caesar's tomb
Or split trench in a field of ragweed.

No decree or creed can outlaw you
As you take every living thing apart. Little
Master of earth, no one gets to heaven
Without going through you first.

Quotable Quotes / Keanu Reeves
August 12, 2025, 04:31:12 PM

"My entire life can be summed up in one sentence: nothing went as I had planned — and that's okay." – Keanu Reeves

Life doesn't follow a perfect script. There will always be unexpected turns, losses, and surprises.

But in every detour, there's something worth keeping — growth, love, lessons learned. Accepting the unexpected isn't just part of the journey... it's what truly keeps us moving forward.

Technology / Was Albert Einstein Wrong on This?
August 12, 2025, 02:33:34 PM

MIT physicists proved Einstein wrong in 100-year-old wave-particle dispute with Niels Bohr.

The 100-year-old quantum debate was solved using single atoms and single photons.

MIT physicists have performed an idealized version of the double-slit experiment. Their findings demonstrate, with atomic-level precision, the dual yet evasive nature of light. They also happen to confirm that Albert Einstein was wrong about this particular quantum scenario.

The double-slit experiment is now known for its surprisingly simple demonstration of a head-scratching reality: that light exists as both a particle and a wave. Stranger still, this duality cannot be simultaneously observed. Seeing light in the form of particles instantly obscures its wave-like nature, and vice versa.

The original experiment involved shining a beam of light through two parallel slits in a screen and observing the pattern that formed on a second, faraway screen. One might expect to see two overlapping spots of light, which would imply that light exists as particles, a.k.a. photons, like paintballs that follow a direct path. But instead, the light produces alternating bright and dark stripes on the screen, in an interference pattern similar to what happens when two ripples in a pond meet. This suggests light behaves as a wave. Even weirder, when one tries to measure which slit the light is traveling through, the light suddenly behaves as particles and the interference pattern disappears.

Nearly a century ago, the experiment was at the center of a friendly debate between physicists Albert Einstein and Niels Bohr. In 1927, Einstein argued that a photon particle should pass through just one of the two slits and in the process generate a slight force on that slit, like a bird rustling a leaf as it flies by. He proposed that one could detect such a force while also observing an interference pattern, thereby catching light's particle and wave nature at the same time. In response, Bohr applied the quantum mechanical uncertainty principle and showed that the detection of the photon's path would wash out the interference pattern.

Now, MIT physicists have performed the most "idealized" version of the double-slit experiment to date. Their version strips down the experiment to its quantum essentials. They used individual atoms as slits, and used weak beams of light so that each atom scattered at most one photon. By preparing the atoms in different quantum states, they were able to modify what information the atoms obtained about the path of the photons. The researchers thus confirmed the predictions of quantum theory: The more information was obtained about the path (i.e. the particle nature) of light, the lower the visibility of the interference pattern was.

They demonstrated what Einstein got wrong. Whenever an atom is "rustled" by a passing photon, the wave interference is diminished.

Instead of physical slits, they used individual ultracold atoms as the "slits."

The team cooled over 10,000 atoms to near absolute zero and arranged them in a precise, crystal-like lattice using lasers. Each atom was effectively an isolated, identical slit.

They then shone a very weak light beam, ensuring that "each atom scattered at most one photon."

The scientists hypothesized that their setup—using individual atoms precisely arranged—could serve as a miniature double-slit experiment.

By directing a faint light beam at the atoms, they could study how single photons interacted with two neighboring atoms, revealing whether the light behaved as a wave or a particle.

In the new variant to the double-slit experiment. These single atoms are like the smallest slits you could possibly build.

The team was able to precisely tune the "fuzziness" of these atomic slits by adjusting the laser light holding them.

The fuzziness of these atoms affected how much information was obtained about a photon's path.

Their results fully agreed with quantum theory and revealed that any attempt to detect a photon's path — even at the tiniest scale — diminishes the wave interference pattern. The findings also disproved a key prediction from Albert Einstein, validating Niels Bohr's century-old argument in their famous debate.

By stripping away all but the essential quantum components — even removing the "spring-like" mechanism many past experiments used — the researchers showed that what matters is not the mechanical setup, but the quantum correlation between photons and atoms. The breakthrough, published in Physical Review Letters. Lead researcher Wolfgang Ketterle called the work "an idealized Gedanken experiment," one that Einstein and Bohr could scarcely have imagined possible in their time.

General Topic / How to Control Hunger
August 12, 2025, 01:41:00 PM

Discipline doesn't begin in the gym, at your desk, or in your bank account — it begins with the most basic of human urges: the desire to eat and drink.
If you can master that, you've taken the first step toward mastering your entire life.

Why?
Because hunger is primal. It is constant. It whispers to you every single day. And if you can look it in the eye and say, "I choose when and what I consume — not my cravings", you've proven to yourself that you can resist temptation in any form.

Controlling your appetite teaches you patience.
It sharpens your focus.
It builds the mental muscle to say NO — not just to food, but to laziness, overspending, procrastination, and every other habit that tries to control you.

Buddhist monks practice mindful eating, not as punishment, but as a path to awareness. They know that the way we approach food reflects the way we approach life.
If you can eat slowly, with gratitude and control, you can think slowly, act wisely, and live intentionally.

Most people are prisoners of their cravings — for food, for comfort, for distractions.
Self-discipline is the key that opens the door to freedom.
And that key is forged in the small, everyday choices you make when no one is watching.

So, start here:
Control what goes into your mouth, and you will soon control what comes out of your mouth — your words, your actions, your reactions.
And when you have that control, there is very little in life you cannot master.

Facts and Trivia / Forrest Gump Financial Problem
August 11, 2025, 06:31:10 PM

In a recent candid interview, Tom Hanks revealed that Forrest Gump (1994) came dangerously close to never being completed. The issue wasn't with the script or casting; it was money. Paramount Pictures had pulled back significant financial support midway through production. Facing massive budgetary gaps, Hanks and director Robert Zemeckis made an unorthodox and risky decision: they would pay for the film themselves.

Hanks explained that two major sequences were on the chopping block due to budget constraints. One was the now-iconic cross-country running montage. The studio did not see the value in funding what it considered a drawn-out and unnecessary portion of the film. Hanks disagreed. He believed those scenes were vital to Forrest's emotional journey and said to Zemeckis, "We'll do it, but we'll do it on our own dime." The two negotiated a deal where they would fund certain portions of the production personally in exchange for a share of the profits. It was a gamble that could have backfired dramatically.

The financial risk they took was not light. Hanks reportedly invested a significant portion of his salary back into the film. At the time, there was no guarantee the movie would even connect with audiences. The story of a slow-witted but kind-hearted man traveling through pivotal moments in American history sounded "too strange to market," as one studio executive allegedly put it. Test screenings were uncertain, and there were fears it would not find an audience.

When Forrest Gump premiered in 1994, no one predicted it would dominate the box office. It went on to gross over $678 million worldwide and won six Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor for Hanks. Reflecting on that wave of unexpected success, Hanks admitted he was stunned. "I thought people might like it, maybe connect with Forrest's innocence. But the reaction? That was something else entirely."

He described attending early screenings and being overwhelmed by the audience's emotional response. "People weren't just laughing or clapping. They were crying. Complete strangers were hugging after the credits. I'd never seen anything like that in my career." Hanks confessed that seeing viewers bond with a character who believed in simple virtues like love, loyalty, and honesty moved him deeply. He said that one moment cemented it for him: "A man came up to me in tears and said, 'Forrest reminded me of my brother. He passed away last year.' That's when I knew this movie had hit somewhere beyond just entertainment."

The scale of success stunned even the most seasoned Hollywood insiders. For a film no one originally believed in, one that nearly lost key scenes due to budget cuts, the reaction felt surreal. Hanks described Oscar night as dreamlike. "I was backstage with Robert, and we looked at each other like, 'How did this even happen?' A year before, we were trying to keep it alive with our own checkbooks. Now, we're standing here with golden statues."

Looking back, Hanks sees the experience as a lesson in faith. Not in studios or profits, but in story. "I didn't know if it would make money. I just knew it was worth telling. Sometimes that's the only reason you need."

Two artists refused to let their vision be compromised by doubt or budget lines. Forrest Gump proved that sometimes the heart behind a film is its greatest asset.

Searched for "Manila Massacre World War 2 casualties killed"

The Battle of Manila and Manila Massacre of 1945 during World War II resulted in devastating civilian casualties. At least 100,000 civilians were killed during the month-long battle [Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manila_massacre)  [Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Manila_(1945)) , making it one of the most destructive urban battles of the Pacific Theater.

The massacre occurred when Japanese forces, under the command of Admiral Sanji Iwabuchi, committed systematic war crimes against Filipino civilians as American and Filipino forces fought to retake the city from February 3 to March 3, 1945. The civilians were killed "indiscriminately and deliberately" [Facts and Details](https://factsanddetails.com/asian/ca67/sub428/entry-5337.html) through bayoneting, shooting, and bombing.

Military casualties were much lower in comparison: 1,010 Americans were killed and 5,565 wounded, while over 16,000 Japanese soldiers were killed [HistoryNet](https://www.historynet.com/battle-of-manila/)  [DVIDS](https://www.dvidshub.net/news/463611/battalion-s-2-killed-during-battle-manila-15-feb-1945) .

The battle resulted in the complete destruction of Manila, which had been known as the "Pearl of the Orient." It was "the scene of the worst urban fighting fought by American forces in the Pacific theater" [Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Manila_(1945)) and stands as one of the major war crimes committed by Imperial Japanese forces during World War II.

LATEST WRITTEN INTERVIEW WITH DEFENCE LEAD COUNSEL ATTY. NICHOLAS KAUFMAN.

NOTE: The answers are published in this post verbatim.

JULY 29, 2025.

Question 1. Could you kindly shed light on this article? What are the effects on your previous clients concerning your representation of former President Rodrigo Roa Duterte, if any?

Article: forbesafrica.com/focus/2013/07/01/scourge-dreaded-red-notice/?fbclid=IwY2xjawL1cehleHRuA2FlbQIxMABicmlkETAwV2N6eE9XRVV6UDBmRW1YAR7HuFirfxyn_xTnjtS0MUliETNbJa_b2x3ZztH-sDK6W9qFmfG0j2CmxRa1vQ_aem_obDsurG0-Z2rumOQWYuvjA

Answer: The former President is fully aware of my former clients and also knows that my meeting with Imelda Marcos took place more than 13 years ago over a Chinese meal in Manila. This was before the Duterte family was recognized as a political force to be reckoned with in the Philippines. The former President also knows that I have recently met Imelda Marcos's daughter – Imee – who, through the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, has been of invaluable assistance to the Filipino people in exposing the illegal actions taken by her own brother's administration. There is no question of my loyalty to former President Duterte.

Question 2. What is your response to individuals who accuse you of employing what they perceive as delaying tactics or stalling the proceedings? Could you also explain why the deferment of the interim release is necessary?

Answer: I am stalling nothing. I will not, however, pursue a request for something as fundamental as interim release when I have been prevented from accessing information which I believe to be crucial to obtaining that objective. Unfortunately, I cannot elaborate on the nature of the information that I require. I have, however, been seeking this information for several months and did not believe it conceivable that it would be so slow in forthcoming. These delays are not attributable to the Defence. Furthermore, I am not going to apologise for doing my job thoroughly even if it is not at the pace required by others. All that counts is that the former President is fully informed and consents to his team's activity on his behalf.

Question 3. There have also been statements that former President Rodrigo Roa Duterte is unaware of his case and that his lawyers are not visiting him. How accurate are these claims?

Answer: These are baseless claims circulated by petty minded and self-interested individuals who have a reason to vilify the Defence. As you know, Alvin, we visit the former President on a daily basis. You see us coming out of the prison regularly and you are our best witness to the fact that these statements and rumours are malicious lies.

Question 4. In our previous interview, you characterized a 'crazy scheme' legal remedy involving Dutch laws. Why do you consider this a big mistake?

Answer: A Dutch lawyer has confirmed to me that Harry Roque approached him with an initiative to sue the Dutch Government for facilitating the rendition of the former President. In my opinion, this was a crazy scheme because the release of the former President would require the cooperation of the Dutch Government – something unlikely to be forthcoming if they are being sued by the person concerned. I was also told that once the Dutch lawyer learned that Harry Roque was a fugitive from justice, he severed all contact with him. But Harry Roque is persistent to the point of obssessive and with this plan, he could very well have jeopardized the Defence's efforts to release the former President. I have made it known that I would find it hard to forgive him for that and I refuse to entertain his ramblings. From day one, Harry Roque has portrayed himself as the only person capable of defending the former President, motivating the public against me and my team. Harry Roque would be best advised to channel the energy he has expended on meddling into defending his appeal against the denial of his supposed refugee status – a status which he would have been happy to jettison if someone would be prepared to employ him. As it is, neither the former President, nor anyone else in his immediate vicinity, is interested in Harry Roque as a lawyer . The former President has made it known that Roque should stop interfering in his case and return to the Philippines to sort out his own troubling legal issues.

Question 5. During your exclusive interview with ABS-CBN, you referred to 'substantial grounds' for the dismissal of the case against the former President before the confirmation of charges before the ICC. Could you elaborate on what qualifies explicitly as substantial grounds in this context?

Answer: The Prosecution has to convince the Pre-Trial Chamber judges that there are substantial grounds to believe that the former President has committed the crimes of which he is accused. This is a much lower standard than that required at trial which is "beyond  reasonable doubt" yet a higher standard than that required for the arrest which is a "reaonsable suspicion". Unfortuantely for the Defence, credibility of witnesses and their motives for lying about the former President are given very little weight at confirmation. The arguments which will be presented by the Defence will be more legal and to a large degree focussed on showing what elements of the offences imputed to the former Presdient have not been made out because the evidence is lacking or the evidence which does exist is so inherently contradictory that it cannot be relied on. No witnesses will be presented by the Prosecution so the Defence will not have the opportunity to prove lies through forensic questioning.

Question 6. Now that it is the judicial recess, are we to wait for developments about the case of former President Duterte only until late August?

Answer: Consequential and urgent applications and decisions can be introduced at any stage.

Question 7. In your submission to the ICC, you indicated that you will neither present an alibi nor invoke grounds for excluding criminal responsibility, nor call any witnesses during the confirmation hearing. What is the reasoning behind this strategic decision?

Answer: As I mentioned in my answer to the last question, the confirmation of charges hearing is limited in scope. It would be a mistake for the Defence to present witnesses at confirmation and thereby alert the Prosecution as to its ammunition should the case go to trial. I cannot elaborate on who exactly will be testifying for the Prosecution at trial but those that currently incriminate the former President can be counted on the fingers of one hand. This is in stark contrast to the many potential Defence witnesses who held positions of consequence and who will be prepared to rally to the former President's side to dismiss the lies of the Prosecution's witnesses. There is no need for an alibi if the Prosection is not alleging the former President's direct involvement in criminality. That is not the Prosecution case. The Prosecution cannot prove that the former President ordered a murder and has, accordingly, constructed a fantastic theory of indirect co-perpetration. This theory entails the notion that crimes were committed by others all of whom were subordinated to the former President's supposed domineering control. This criminality, accoring to the Prosecution, was enacted pursuant to an elaborate criminal plan with all participants sharing the same criminal intent. The Defence will show this bizarre, highly convoluted and speculative theory of responsibility to be thoroughly baseless.

Machiavelli's Mirror: 18 Human Patterns That Reveal Everything

Click here in the link for an audio Podcast of this content:  https://notebooklm.google.com/notebook/5c845a1e-f8d3-4ea1-95c9-72fba70a63fe/audio

Niccolò Machiavelli understood something most people avoid: human nature, when closely observed, is more predictable than it seems. He was not driven by cruelty, but by clarity. And that clarity, while often uncomfortable, is freeing.

This is not a collection of manipulative tricks. It is a guide to understanding people at their most unguarded. It teaches how to look past appearances and predict behavior based on deep patterns rather than surface impressions. These principles are for those who can no longer afford to be deceived by what people say or perform.

1. Look for the Hidden Motive

Kindness often has a purpose. Sometimes it's approval, control, or self-preservation. Start from the assumption that every action has a reason. When someone flatters you, ask yourself what they might need.

2. Contradictions Are Accidental Honesty

Inconsistencies reveal truth. People rarely lie seamlessly. Their tone, story, and behavior drift. Let them speak long enough, and the truth leaks through the cracks.

3. Silence Makes People Reveal Themselves

Silence feels unnatural. People try to fill it, and in doing so, expose their fears, guilt, or confusion. What they say during that discomfort speaks louder than their prepared answers.

4. Loud Morality Hides Quiet Insecurity

Those who loudly proclaim their values are often trying to silence their own inner conflict. The most ethical people rarely need to talk about it. They show it quietly through their actions.

5. People Lie to Themselves Before They Lie to You

Self-deception comes first. People create narratives to survive painful truths. These stories become so convincing that they believe them fully. You're not being misled. You're witnessing someone preserving their identity.

6. Arrogance Often Covers Fragility

The person who demands attention may fear irrelevance. The one who refuses to admit wrongs may be covering shame. Loud confidence can be a defense against inner doubt.

7. Fear, Not Logic, Drives Behavior

People are shaped by what they are afraid of losing. Rejection, failure, insignificance—these fears direct their choices. Look there, and their behavior becomes predictable.

8. Criticism Reflects the Critic

People judge what they secretly fear or dislike in themselves. Trace their harsh words back to their own pain, and you will find the source.

9. Certainty Often Covers Guilt

Inflexible certainty can be a mask. When people refuse to be wrong, it may be because they cannot emotionally afford to be. Watch what happens when their position is questioned.

10. Exaggeration Reveals Insecurity

The person who always says "never" or "always" may be trying to assert control. The louder the claim, the more fragile the confidence behind it.

11. Control Comes from Inner Chaos

People who micromanage or dominate conversations often feel powerless inside. Their control of others is an attempt to avoid confronting their own instability.

12. Performers Fear Being Forgotten

Some people rely on attention to feel real. When the audience fades, so does their sense of self. Their constant performance is a survival strategy.

13. Rationality Can Hide Emotional Pain

An obsession with logic can be a defense against emotional wounds. Beliefs become protective armor. The stronger the attachment, the deeper the fear beneath it.

14. Watch How They Treat the Powerless

True character appears in how someone acts when they have nothing to gain. Kindness without reward is the most honest form of integrity.

15. Attention-Seeking Masks the Fear of Disappearing

Those who create drama or dominate conversations often fear being ignored. Behind the noise is a person who once felt invisible.

16. Envy Disguises Itself as Hatred

Few will admit they envy others. Instead, they criticize what they secretly want. Their contempt is often admiration in disguise.

17. Adults Act Out Their Childhood Roles
The patterns we form early in life stay with us. The one who avoids conflict, the one who over-performs, the one who never asks for help—these roles resurface under pressure.

18. Patterns Speak Louder Than Words

Repeated behaviors tell you more than confessions. Someone who avoids intimacy may have been hurt by it. Someone who mocks emotion may have been punished for expressing it. Patterns never lie.

These 18 insights are not tools for manipulation. They are instruments of understanding. Once you see the patterns in others, you begin to see your own. You notice where you seek validation, where you hide, and where you act out old roles.

That self-awareness is the beginning of power.

Machiavelli once said, "The wise man does at once what the fool does finally." To see clearly, both in others and in yourself, is not cynicism. It is maturity.

Use this knowledge to stay grounded, to stop being surprised, and to meet others with clarity instead of illusion. Not to dominate, but to move through life with open eyes.

In a world full of performance, awareness is your greatest advantage.

Weird and Extreme / Dr James Barry was a Woman
July 06, 2025, 04:40:03 PM

When Dr. James Barry died in 1865, the charwoman preparing his body screamed—the legendary surgeon who'd dueled, cursed, and saved thousands was a woman. And the British Army vowed to bury the truth.

This was Margaret Ann Bulkley, born in 1789, who had lived her entire adult life disguised as a man named James Barry.

Her ambition was to study medicine, an impossible dream for a woman in the early 19th century. So, in 1809, "James Barry" enrolled at Edinburgh University.

She graduated in 1812, becoming the first woman in Britain to earn a medical degree, though no one knew her secret.

In 1813, Dr. Barry joined the British Army, embarking on a remarkable medical career that spanned decades and continents.

One of her most notable achievements came in 1826 in Cape Town, Africa. Dr. Barry performed the first successful Caesarean section on the continent where both mother and child survived.

Throughout her service, she rose to the rank of Inspector-General of Hospitals, the Army's highest medical position at the time.

Dr. Barry was known for a fiery temper and even fought duels with those who questioned him. Yet, she also championed vital reforms in sanitation, nutrition, and humane care for soldiers, prisoners, and even lepers.

Her original plan, conceived with her uncle, was to support a Venezuelan rebellion. When that revolutionary plan collapsed, Margaret was forced to continue the disguise of James Barry to pursue her medical career.

It was only upon her death from dysentery in July 1865 that her biological sex was discovered by the woman laying out her body. The revelation caused a significant scandal.

To avoid further embarrassment and controversy, the British Army sealed Dr. Barry's records for 100 years, attempting to obscure this extraordinary life from public knowledge.

AI is flipping the startup playbook. With the right tools, solo founders can now build and scale companies that rival traditional tech giants—faster and with far fewer resources.

🧠 AI is replacing traditional teams: Solo founders are using AI tools and APIs to build and scale entire companies.

💸 Lean, AI-native startups are hitting massive ARR: Midjourney hit $500M with ~40 people; Cursor crossed $100M ARR with just 20 engineers.

🛠️ Tools over teams: With LLMs and co-pilots, entrepreneurs can build, deploy, and scale products faster than ever.

🌍 Community-led growth: Many skip sales teams, relying on Discord and product-led adoption.

📈 High revenue per employee is the new startup metric.

Backed by powerful AI and a shift in how software is built, the next unicorn might not be a company—it could be a coder with a laptop and a GPU stack.

Because Philippine law restricts full foreign ownership of businesses, ANSCOR—a Filipino company—maintains the controlling stake.

The name "Amanpulo" blends Aman (Sanskrit for "peace") and pulo (Tagalog for "island"), perfectly capturing the resort's serene island setting on Pamalican Island in Palawan.

There was a man who used to sit on the same bench outside a Vancouver clinic every morning. His face was thin, tired, and years older than his age. His hands trembled, and his eyes looked through people like he was seeing ghosts. He once told Dr. Gabor Maté, "I wasn't always like this. I used to have a family. I used to laugh. Then the pain got louder than the laughter."

He didn't become an addict because he was weak or stupid. He became one because, somewhere deep inside, he was hurting in a way that had no words. Drugs were the only thing that ever made it quiet. And then they took everything else from him.

This is the kind of story Gabor Maté tells in In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts. It is not a book of judgment. It is a book of witnessing. It is a tender and unflinching journey into the world of addiction, not from the outside looking in, but from the inside—where the loneliness lives.

This book does not offer easy answers. It offers honesty. It reaches into the places many people are too afraid to look—addiction, trauma, loneliness—and invites us to see with softer eyes. These seven lessons are not only about addiction; they are about being human in a world that often hurts.

1. Addiction is not a choice. It is a coping mechanism for pain.
This is the most important lesson of the book. Addicts are not choosing destruction. They are choosing relief, however temporary, from unbearable pain. Drugs, alcohol, gambling, food—these are not the problem. They are attempts at self-soothing. When you understand this, you stop asking, "What's wrong with them?" and start asking, "What happened to them?"

2. Trauma is at the root of addiction.
Maté shows how almost every person struggling with addiction has a history of trauma—neglect, abuse, abandonment, violence. These wounds are often invisible but they shape the brain and nervous system. People don't use because they're bad. They use because it's the only way they know how to survive what's been done to them.

3. The brain is shaped by environment, especially in childhood.
Addiction is not just about genetics. It's also about early experiences. If a child grows up without emotional safety, their brain develops differently. The parts responsible for impulse control, emotional regulation, and trust don't grow as they should. So later in life, they are more vulnerable to addiction—not because they are weak, but because they were never given the right tools.

4. Compassion, not punishment, is the key to healing.
Society often treats addicts like criminals, like they deserve their suffering. But punishment does not heal trauma. Maté shows how people begin to heal only when they feel safe, seen, and accepted. He invites us to meet addiction not with disgust, but with deep compassion—for others, and for ourselves.

5. Addictions come in many forms—and most of us have them.
This book is not just about heroin or crack. It's also about shopping, food, work, approval, internet scrolling. Anything we use to escape ourselves can become an addiction. That means the line between "us" and "them" is much thinner than we want to admit. We're all trying to fill the same emptiness in different ways.

6. Healing requires reconnecting—with ourselves and with others.
Addiction thrives in isolation. It grows in shame. Healing begins when we come back into connection—with our bodies, with safe people, with truth. Maté writes that healing is not about controlling behavior. It's about feeling what we were once too afraid to feel. It's about letting the body and heart remember what safety feels like.

7. We must challenge a toxic culture that fuels disconnection.
Maté calls out the deeper issue: we live in a society that breeds addiction. A world that values productivity over presence, image over authenticity, and individualism over community. Until we change the conditions that cause people to hurt and hide, we will keep creating more hungry ghosts.

In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts teaches that addiction is not a flaw in a person—it's a mirror held up to a broken system. It asks us to look closely, not only at the addict on the street, but at our own lives, our own escapes, and our own hunger.

And it reminds us that healing is possible—not through shame, but through love.

Maté draws from Buddhist teachings to explain the title. "Hungry ghosts" are beings with large empty bellies and tiny mouths, always starving, never full. This is what addiction is. A desperate craving to be soothed, to feel safe, to feel love—even for a moment.

And these ghosts do not only haunt those with visible addictions. Many of us are addicted to things that don't look dangerous: work, food, social media, approval. We chase things to fill the emptiness. And it never lasts.

Bible Study / 1,000 Years of Reign of Christ
June 15, 2025, 05:09:21 PM

The "1,000 years of reign of Jesus Christ" is commonly referred to as the **Millennium** and is primarily described in Revelation 20:1–6. Under the **premillennial view**—a widely held interpretation among many evangelicals—this period is seen as a literal 1,000-year era that follows Christ's triumphant return and defeat of evil. During this time, Christ is understood to rule on a renewed earth, during which He binds Satan and establishes a period of unprecedented peace and divine justice.

Regarding where Christians will live during this time, many premillennial interpretations hold that those who are redeemed—whether resurrected or survivors from the tribulation—will inhabit this renewed earth rather than remaining in what we traditionally view as "heaven." The imagery in Revelation, particularly the vision of the New Jerusalem descending from heaven to a transformed earth (as described later in Revelation 21), suggests that God's people will enjoy an existence integrated into a physically restored creation. In this renewed environment, the redeemed will reign alongside Christ, sharing in His authority and experiencing a restored relationship with both God and creation.

It's important to note, however, that there are alternative interpretations. For example, **amillennialists** see the 1,000 years as a symbolic representation of Christ's current spiritual reign through His church rather than a literal future period. Despite these differences, the hopeful promise remains that God's care and rule extend to every part of His creation—symbolizing that nothing is too small or insignificant in His plan.

Bible Study / Free Will of the Lord Jesus Christ
June 15, 2025, 03:38:55 PM

The question touches on one of the most profound mysteries in Christian theology: the union of divine and human natures in Jesus Christ and how that union relates to free will. In Christian thought, Jesus is both fully God and fully man. As a human being, He possesses a will and the capacity to choose. Yet, His divine nature means that His will was perfectly united and aligned with the Father's will. In passages such as John 10:18, where Jesus says, "I lay down my life of my own accord," we see a demonstration of a will exercised freely and intentionally, but one that never diverged from the Father's plan [^2^].

The inherent nature of free will implies the possibility of choosing otherwise. For ordinary human beings, this means the freedom to choose between good and evil—a freedom that, due to the entrance of sin, often results in disobedience. In contrast, Jesus' human will was without sin. His perfect obedience was not the result of coercion but the natural outworking of a will that was entirely in harmony with the divine. Even when Jesus experienced temptation—as seen in His time in the wilderness or the anguished prayers in Gethsemane—He always chose obedience. His free will was real, yet it was so perfectly conformed to God's nature that the possibility of disobedience was never actualized [^3^].

Some theologians have discussed the idea that if free will is genuine, then logically there must be the capacity to choose contrary to God's will. In Jesus' case, while He did indeed have free will as a human, His unique union with the divine ensured that His nature did not incline Him toward sin. Rather than a mechanical inevitability, His obedience was a freely made, loving choice—a model of perfect submission. His decision to obey reflects not a lack of freedom but an exalted, redemptive freedom that serves as an example for believers who struggle with the challenge of aligning their own wills with God's perfect design [^4^].

In summary, Jesus Christ had free will in the human sense, yet His sinless nature and perfect unity with the Father's will meant that He would—and always did—choose obedience rather than disobedience. This dynamic doesn't diminish the reality of His free will; instead, it points to what is possible when one's will is completely transformed by divine grace.

Exploring further, you might consider how this understanding of Christ's perfect obedience has shaped Christian views on salvation and the nature of discipleship. How might our own struggles with free will and temptation find resolution in the example set by Christ's harmonious submission?

Why the Strongest People Speak Less

Here is an audio Podcast in "Deep Dive": https://notebooklm.google.com/notebook/ccd0187b-26c5-40e5-aa25-530198f85888/audio

In today's world, where everyone seems to be talking, posting, and explaining themselves non-stop, many of us feel worn out, scattered, and strangely empty. We share every little win and every struggle, hoping for encouragement, understanding, or simply a sense of connection. Yet all this noise often leaves us feeling more disconnected from ourselves.

Here's a different idea—one the Stoics knew well: Real power grows in silence. If you're tired of the constant chatter, if you want to reclaim your energy, your confidence, and your inner focus, here are 13 Stoic lessons that can help you do just that.

1. Words Shape Reality: Speak with Care

The words you speak about yourself matter. A lot. Marcus Aurelius said, "The happiness of your life depends upon the quality of your thoughts." When you constantly say things like, "I'm a mess" or "I can't do this," you're reinforcing those beliefs. Your mind listens and believes you. Choose words that lift you up, not weigh you down. Speak with kindness—especially to yourself.

2. Your Change Requires No Audience

Not everything you do needs to be announced. In fact, talking too much about your self-improvement can dilute it. Epictetus wisely said, "Don't explain your philosophy. Embody it." When you focus on the work itself rather than the applause, your progress becomes real and lasting. Change is for you—not for likes or validation.

3. Actions Speak Louder Than Words

It's easy to talk about what you're going to do. It's much harder—and more powerful—to actually do it. Marcus Aurelius advised, "Do every act of your life as though it were your last." Instead of announcing your intentions, focus on taking consistent, meaningful action. Let your results speak for you.

4. Rewrite Your Inner Story

The way you talk to yourself shapes how you experience life. Constant self-criticism makes it harder to move forward. Epictetus reminded us, "It is not things that disturb people, but their judgments about them." Pay attention to your inner dialogue. When you catch yourself being harsh, pause and choose words that encourage growth instead of self-blame. A simple way to start: write down your most common negative thoughts and rewrite them with compassion.

5. Words Are Tools: Use Them Wisely

Every word you speak has an impact—on yourself and others. Before you speak, ask: Will this uplift or diminish? If you're unsure, it might be better to stay quiet. Seneca put it beautifully: "Speech should be adorned by reason." Make your words count.

6. Not Everyone Will Understand You

Some people won't get what you're going through. They might misinterpret your choices or judge your path. That's okay. As Epictetus said, "If you want to improve, be content to be thought foolish and stupid." You don't owe anyone an explanation for your growth. Focus on what matters to you.

7. Talking About It Isn't Doing It

Sharing your goals can feel good, but it can also trick your brain into thinking you've already accomplished them. Derek Sivers explained, "When you tell someone your goal and they acknowledge it, the mind is tricked into feeling it is already done." Instead of talking about what you'll do, quietly get to work. Let success be your announcement.

8. Listen More Than You Speak

We were given two ears and one mouth for a reason. Epictetus reminded us, "We have two ears and one mouth so that we can listen twice as much as we speak." Listening helps us understand others, learn new things, and build deeper connections. It also teaches us humility. The next time you're in a conversation, try listening with full attention—you might be surprised by what you learn.

9. Applause Can Be a Trap

Chasing praise is a dangerous game. If your self-worth depends on applause, you'll constantly feel at the mercy of other people's opinions. Seneca said, "The reward for a good action is having done it." True fulfillment comes from knowing you're living in alignment with your values—not from external validation.

10. Trust Must Be Earned

Not everyone deserves access to your most vulnerable thoughts and feelings. Seneca advised, "It is safer to avoid trusting than to regret having trusted." Be discerning about who you confide in. Build trust gradually, based on consistent actions and mutual respect.

11. Some Battles Are Best Fought in Silence

Not every struggle needs to be shared. Some transformations require solitude and space to grow. Marcus Aurelius often wrote privately in his journals to process his thoughts. You can do the same. And remember, while some battles are personal, others benefit from support. Choose carefully when to seek help and when to walk your path quietly.

12. Escape the Exhaustion of Noise

The constant need to share every moment of our lives is exhausting. Epictetus offers a simple reminder: "Don't explain your philosophy. Live it." Turn down the volume. Step back from the need to broadcast everything. In the quiet, you'll find clarity, focus, and renewed energy.

13. Do It for Yourself, Not for Applause

The most meaningful changes happen when we do them for ourselves. If your growth depends on external praise, it's fragile. When it's rooted in your own values and integrity, it's unshakable. As Seneca said, "The reward for a good action is having done it." Let that be enough. Grow because it matters to you.

Final Thoughts

In a culture obsessed with being seen and heard, Stoicism offers a refreshing alternative: the quiet power of restraint. You don't need to prove your worth with words. You don't need to explain your growth. Speak less. Listen more. Build steadily. Protect your inner life. And most importantly, live in a way that makes you proud—whether or not anyone else notices.

Today, choose one small area of your life where you'll practice deliberate silence and focused action. Let your life speak for itself.

General Topic / Advice to an Employee
June 11, 2025, 11:11:56 AM

ADVICE TO ALL EMPLOYEES
1. Build a home earlier. Be it rural home or urban home. Building a house at 50 is not an achievement. Don't get used to government houses. This comfort is so dangerous. Let all your family have good time in your house.

2. Go home. Don't stick at work all the year.  You are not the pillar of your department.  If you drop dead today, you will be replaced immediately and operations will continue.  Make your family a priority.

3. Don't chase promotions.  Master your skills and be excellent at what you do. If they want to promote you, that's fine if they don't,  stay positive to your personal.
development.

4. Avoid office or work gossip. Avoid things that tarnish your name or reputation. Don't join the bandwagon that backbites  your bosses and colleagues. Stay away from negative gatherings that have only people as their agenda.

5. Don't ever compete with your bosses.  You will burn your fingers.  Don't compete with your colleagues, you will fry your brain.

6. Ensure you have a side business.  Your salary will not sustain your needs in the long run.

7. Save some money. Let it be deducted automatically from your payslip.

8. Borrow a loan to invest in a business or to change a situation not to buy luxury. Buy luxury from your profit.

9. Keep your life, marriage and family private. Let them stay away from your work. This is very important.

10. Be loyal to yourself  and believe in your work. Hanging around your boss will alienate you from your colleagues and  your boss may finally dump you when he leaves.

11. Retire early.  The best way to plan for your exit was when you received the employment letter. The other best time is today.  By 40 to 50 be out.

12. Join work welfare and be an active member always. It will help you a lot when  any eventuality occurs.

13.Take leave days utilize them by developing yr future home or projects..usually what you do during yr leave days is a reflection of how you'll live after retirement..If it means you spend it all holding a remote control watching series on Zee world, expect nothing different after retirement.

14. Start a project whilst still serving or working. Let your project run whilst at work and if it doesn't do well, start another one till it's running viably. When your project is viably running then retire to manage your business. Most people or pensioners fail in life because they retire to start a project instead of retiring to run a project.

15. Pension money is not for starting a project or buy a stand or build a house but it's money for your upkeep or to maintain yourself in good health. Pension money is not for paying school fees or marrying a young wife but to look after yourself.

16. Always remember, when you retire never be a case study for living a miserable life after retirement but be a role model for colleagues to think of retiring too.

17. Don't retire just because you are finished or you are now a burden to the company and just wait for your day to die. Retire young or whilst energetic to enjoy waking up for a cup of coffee, enjoy the sun, receive money from your business, visit nice place that you missed and spend good time with family. Those who retire late, spend about 95% of their time at work than with their family and that's why they see it difficult to spend time with their family when they retire but end looking for another job till they die. If they don't get another job, they die early.

18. Retire at your house than at government accommodation so that when you retire you can easily fit into the society that raised you. It's not easy to adjust to live in a location after spending more years at company house or at government house.

19. Never let your employment benefits make you forget about your retirement. Employment benefits are just meant to make you relax, get finished whilst time is moving. Remember when you retire no one will call you boss if you don't have a viable business.

20. Don't hate to retire because one day you will retire either voluntarily or involuntarily.

Hope this will help you look at life positively.

Love Talk / Be Ready to Be Discarded
June 07, 2025, 07:24:26 AM

"I Don't Love You Anymore" — The Most Dangerous Sentence a Man Will Ever Hear

"She'll smile in your face, sleep in your bed, whisper 'forever' in your ear... and still wake up one day and say, 'I don't love you anymore.' No apology. No explanation. Just emotional homicide. And if you're not built for it? You'll crumble. This isn't about love—it's about survival. So wake up, king. Because in today's world, a soft man gets slaughtered."

Let's talk, man to man.

Let's talk before another strong man becomes a shattered soul... because of a single sentence:

> "I don't love you anymore."

It doesn't come with a warning. It doesn't come with closure. It comes like a thief in the night—unexpected, cruel, and final.

One day, she's calling you "my king," holding your hand in public, sending heart emojis and planning baby names...

The next day?

She's cold. She's distant. She's "confused." And within weeks, she's gone.

And the worst part?

You never saw it coming.

Let's break this down before another man breaks down.

---

1. Modern Love Is a Feeling, Not a Commitment

She said she loved you. And you believed her.

She looked you in the eye, smiled at your quirks, praised your ambition, and laid on your chest like she'd never leave.

She meant it... in that moment.

But here's the thing:

Modern love isn't built to last. It's built to feel good—for now.

She was raised on Disney movies and Instagram reels. She was taught that love should always feel like the honeymoon stage. And when it doesn't? She panics. She doubts. She detaches.

Your consistency feels boring. Your loyalty feels predictable. Your masculine energy feels oppressive—unless it comes with a six-figure income and a yacht on weekends.

Modern women are raised on "what feels good," not "what builds well."

She loved your dad jokes... until they weren't funny anymore.

She loved your hustle... until it started taking time away from her.

She loved your emotional availability... until she saw a more "alpha" guy flirt with her picture.

That's not love. That's emotional tourism.

You weren't her partner. You were her escape.

You were the island she visited when the storms of her last bad decision rained on her.

And when the sun came out? She booked the next flight.

---

2. Her Love Isn't Forever—It's Conditional

You thought love was about loyalty.

You thought it meant riding out the hard times.

You thought your years together, your history, your sacrifices meant something.

But to her?

Love was about how you made her feel.

If you stopped making her feel:

Sexy

Special

Spoiled

Then she started rethinking the whole relationship.

And when you reminded her of all the moments you held her, healed her, believed in her when no one else did?

She said you were guilt-tripping.

When you asked her to remember all the things you gave up just to build a future together?

She called it "emotional abuse."

She rewrote the narrative—turned your faithfulness into control, your commitment into weakness, your masculinity into toxicity.

Because in her mind, the fact that you're begging means she was always above you.

And if she was "settling"... then it's time to upgrade.

You didn't stop being a good man. You just stopped being exciting.

And in today's culture, that's unforgivable.

---

3. You're Not Her Forever—You're Just Her Right Now

You planned a future.

She planned an exit.

While you were:

Paying bills

Protecting her

Planning vacations

Fixing what she broke

Showing up even when you were tired

She was daydreaming about someone else.

Not always a person—sometimes just a feeling. A fantasy. A version of herself that didn't include you.

She started asking herself:

> "Is this all there is?"

"Do I still feel butterflies?"

"Is he really the best I can do?"

She didn't say it out loud. But her body changed. Her eyes dimmed. Her touch grew colder.

And before you could process it, she emotionally ghosted you. Months before she physically left.

You were loyal to the foundation. She was chasing fireworks.

You were building a home. She was scrolling through options.

She never wanted forever. She wanted a moment that felt eternal... until it didn't.

---

4. Every Relationship Ends—Breakup, Divorce, or Death

That's not pessimism. That's reality.

Love always ends—either through separation or through the grave.

So why do you bet your entire emotional stock portfolio on a woman who might walk away?

Why do you treat a temporary season like a final destination?

Here's the truth:

Most women will love you until.

Until you stop exciting them.

Until someone more "interesting" shows up.

Until they get a therapist who tells them they "deserve more."

Until their single friends convince them that stability is settling.

So stop making her your god.

Stop defining your self-worth by how warm she is when you hold her at night.

Stop assuming that one great anniversary means she'll never leave.

Because when it ends—and most will—it shouldn't take your peace, your identity, or your purpose with it.

Love her. Be present. Be faithful.

But stay ready.

Be the man who gives his best—but never loses himself in the giving.

You're not her forever. You're just her favorite chapter... until she starts writing a new book.

---

5. Heal Before You Deal

Here's a truth most men never hear:

You attract what you are.

If you're broken? You'll attract chaos.

If you're needy? You'll attract manipulation.

If you're still the little boy begging mom for love? You'll chase women who reward you with crumbs.

That's why you keep getting played.

That's why you keep over-giving, over-compensating, over-explaining—while getting under-appreciated.

You don't need to "prove" your worth. You need to become it.

Heal your childhood wounds. Break the cycles. Learn to be alone without being lonely.

Because if you're not whole?

You'll settle for half-hearted women.

You'll pay for love. Buy affection. Beg for validation.

You'll give up your power just to feel "wanted."

And when she walks away?

You'll break.

So heal, brother.

Become whole.

And watch how the wrong women disappear—and the right one recognizes your worth without needing to be convinced.

---

Final Word: Stop Romanticizing Her Love. Start Respecting Yourself.

Let me say this as clearly as possible:

You are not unlovable. You were just never truly seen.

You gave your best. You showed up. You stayed when others would have walked.

But she didn't love you—she loved the version of you that served her needs.

The moment that version stopped being enough?

She was out.

And when she says:

> "I don't love you anymore..."

You should be able to smile—not because it doesn't hurt...

But because it doesn't destroy you.

You've built your life on something deeper than her validation.

You've become a man who:

Leads with purpose

Loves with boundaries

Walks away with dignity

You don't need her. You chose her. And if she couldn't see your worth?

That's her loss—not your failure.

You were building.

You were healing.

You were becoming a man of legacy.

So the next time she says she's done?

Say this:

> "Thank you for revealing your true self. Now I can walk freely into my future."

Not every woman deserves your devotion.

Not every "I love you" is sacred.

Wait for the one who proves it—not with words, not with kisses, not with hot nights—but with consistency. With character. With loyalty that doesn't fade when life gets boring.

Because kings don't beg to be loved. They build kingdoms.

Let her go.

And keep building

Philippine Daily News / World Reef Day 2025
June 02, 2025, 07:08:20 PM

Happy World Reef Day! Our scientists do surveys to deepen our understanding of the reefs at the West Philippine Sea.

TALES FROM THE SAILS: A team of 10 researchers from the UP MSI and DENR-Biodiversity Management Bureau conducted a field survey on Pag-asa Island in the Kalayaan Island Group, West Philippine Sea, from April 25 to May 3, 2025. Building on their February 2025 survey, the researchers assessed biodiversity, collected samples, and measured water properties over the reef flat.

This work is part of the Integrated Research for Biodiversity Conservation and Carbon Sequestration in the West Philippine Sea (BioConSeq-WPS) project funded by DENR-BMB, a long-term effort to understand and protect marine ecosystems in this ecologically critical area.

Empowering Voices: A Lecture on Campus Journalism

Magandang umaga sa inyong lahat! (Good morning, everyone!)
It's a privilege to be here today to talk about a topic that is incredibly vital, especially for young, aspiring communicators like yourselves: campus journalism. This seminar-workshop is a fantastic opportunity to deepen your understanding and hone your skills in this dynamic field.
What is Campus Journalism?
At its core, campus journalism is the practice of journalism within the school setting. It's about gathering, writing, editing, and publishing news and information for the school community – your fellow students, teachers, administrators, and even parents.
In the Philippines, campus journalism is not just an extracurricular activity; it's a right and a responsibility enshrined in law. The Republic Act No. 7079, also known as the Campus Journalism Act of 1991, upholds and protects the freedom of speech and of the press for students in our schools. This law empowers you to be the voice of your campus.
Roles and Responsibilities of a Campus Journalist
Being a campus journalist comes with significant roles and responsibilities:
* To Inform: Your primary role is to keep your school community updated on events, policies, and issues that affect them. This includes news about academics, sports, clubs, and administrative decisions.
* To Educate: Beyond just reporting facts, you have the power to explain complex issues, provide context, and promote critical thinking among your readers.
* To Entertain: Journalism isn't always serious. Features, creative writing, and even comics can engage your audience and provide a lighter side to your publication.
* To Advocate: Campus journalists can be powerful advocates for student rights, environmental causes, social justice, and other important issues within and beyond the school.
* To Be a Watchdog: You serve as the eyes and ears of the student body, holding school authorities accountable and ensuring transparency. This requires courage and integrity.
Key Principles of Campus Journalism
To fulfill these roles effectively, you must adhere to fundamental journalistic principles:
* Accuracy: Always verify your facts. Double-check names, dates, places, and statistics. One inaccurate detail can damage your credibility.
* Fairness: Present all sides of a story. Give everyone involved a chance to speak. Avoid bias and personal opinions in news reporting.
* Objectivity: Strive to report without letting your personal feelings or beliefs influence the story. This means using neutral language and presenting facts as they are.
* Balance: Ensure that different perspectives are adequately represented, especially in controversial issues.
* Responsibility: Understand the impact of your words. Be mindful of privacy, avoid libel and slander, and always consider the ethical implications of your reporting.
Types of Campus Publications and Platforms
Campus journalism has evolved beyond just print. Today, you have various platforms to utilize:
* Campus Newspaper/Newsletter: The traditional backbone, offering news, features, editorials, and opinion pieces.
* Campus Magazine: Often focuses on longer features, lifestyle, arts, and in-depth analyses.
* Yearbook: A historical record of the school year, capturing memories, achievements, and student life.
* Online Platforms (Blogs, Websites, Social Media): Offer immediate dissemination of news, multimedia content, and interactive features. This is where you can reach a wider audience quickly.
* Broadcast (Campus Radio/TV): For schools with facilities, this allows for audio and visual storytelling.
Basic Journalistic Skills You'll Develop
This seminar-workshop will equip you with essential skills:
* Writing: Mastering news writing (the inverted pyramid), feature writing (storytelling), editorial writing (persuasion), and opinion pieces.
* Editing: Learning to spot grammatical errors, improve clarity, ensure conciseness, and check for factual accuracy.
* Photography: Capturing compelling images that tell a story and complement your articles.
* Layout and Design: Arranging text and visuals effectively to create an appealing and readable publication.
* Interviewing: Asking the right questions, listening actively, and getting accurate quotes.
* Research: Knowing how to find reliable information and sources.
Challenges and Opportunities
Campus journalism, like any field, has its challenges:
* Censorship: Dealing with potential restrictions from authorities or external pressures.
* Limited Resources: Budget constraints for printing, equipment, or training.
* Time Constraints: Balancing journalistic duties with academic responsibilities.
* Lack of Training: This seminar-workshop aims to address this!
However, these challenges also present opportunities:
* Skill Development: You'll develop critical thinking, communication, research, and leadership skills.
* Advocacy: You become a powerful voice for your peers and community.
* Community Building: Your work fosters a sense of unity and shared identity within the school.
* Real-world Experience: Campus journalism is a training ground for future journalists, communicators, and leaders.
The Campus Journalist as a Catalyst for Change
Never underestimate the power of your voice. As campus journalists, you are not just recorders of events; you are active participants in shaping the narrative of your school. You can highlight injustices, celebrate successes, spark discussions, and inspire action. You are catalysts for positive change.

Music and Video / Demolition Movie 2015 Summary
June 02, 2025, 06:48:59 AM

"Demolition" (2015) tells the story of Davis Mitchell (Jake Gyllenhaal), a successful Wall Street investment banker whose life is irrevocably altered when his wife, Julia, is killed in a car accident. Surprisingly, Davis finds himself unable to feel any grief or emotion over her death, which bewilders those around him, especially his father-in-law and boss, Phil (Chris Cooper).
In the aftermath of the tragedy, Davis experiences a strange detachment from his life. He begins writing increasingly personal and revealing complaint letters to a vending machine company after a machine in the hospital malfunctions. These letters catch the attention of customer service representative Karen (Naomi Watts), who is dealing with her own emotional and financial struggles.
Davis's unconventional grieving process leads him to literally dismantle various aspects of his life. He starts by taking apart household appliances, then moves on to tearing down his entire house, believing that by deconstructing things, he can understand what went wrong and how to rebuild. He develops an unlikely connection with Karen and her rebellious teenage son, Chris (Judah Lewis), who also struggles with his own form of grief and identity.

Through these acts of literal and metaphorical demolition, and his interactions with Karen and Chris, Davis slowly begins to confront the truth about his marriage and his own emotional numbness. He realizes that his relationship with Julia had become stagnant and that he had been emotionally disconnected for a long time. The film explores his journey of self-discovery, eventually leading him to a breakthrough and a release of pent-up emotions, allowing him to finally experience grief and begin the process of genuine healing and rebuilding his life.

Weird and Extreme / Clay Oven to Hatch Chicken Eggs
June 01, 2025, 03:04:24 PM

🔥 The Village That Hatched Fire-Born Chicks 🐣

Long ago, beneath the blazing Egyptian sun, in a dusty village far from the Nile, there was no electricity, no wires, no machines. Yet every spring, chicks filled the air with soft chirps—born not from hens, but from ovens.

Yes. Ovens.

They called them mamals—strange, dome-shaped clay structures, half buried in the earth. To a traveler, they looked like bread kilns. But to the locals, they were miracles of mud and fire.

Inside, there were no nests. No brooding birds. Just eggs—hundreds, sometimes thousands of them—resting in warmth, waiting to hatch.

Villagers, old and young, knew the rhythm by heart. One chamber held a slow, steady fire, its embers glowing. The other chamber—dark, silent—held the eggs. They adjusted vents. They shifted ashes. They felt the heat on their skin and listened to the silence inside.

And then, one morning, a tiny crack.
Then another.
Then a thousand tiny beaks pecking through shells—life, born of balance and flame.

Travelers from faraway lands—Europe, Arabia, Asia—came and stood in awe.
"How do you do this?" they asked.
The Egyptians just smiled.
"It's no magic," they said. "Just patience. And knowing what fire wants."

Some mamals could hatch 80,000 chicks in one season. It changed everything: food, trade, survival. The technology spread, but few mastered it. For centuries, the villagers kept the secret—an ancient science carried in hands, not books.

Now, we marvel at smart farms and electric hatcheries. But in the quiet ruins of that old Egyptian village, the earth remembers:
Once, fire hatched birds.
And the world called it impossible—until they saw it with their own eyes.

Inspiration & Hope / Ananisapta
June 01, 2025, 12:52:07 PM
(ananisapta) are the initial letters of the following words: Antidoton Nazareni Auferat Necen Intoxationes, Sanctificet Alimenta Pocula Trinitas Alma. This acrostic word is an amulet, which, according to the superstitions of former times, was said to do good service, especially against toothache. It had to be carried around the neck. Even to speak the word Ananisapta three times was often quite sufficient.

Weird and Extreme / Drilling the Earth
June 01, 2025, 12:49:37 PM

A new type of drill may soon reach deeper into Earth than any human-made tool before it—and it doesn't even have a bit. At a recent demo in Houston, startup Quaise Energy showcased a millimeter-wave drilling system that vaporizes rock instead of cutting through it. The system uses a high-powered gyrotron to emit electromagnetic energy capable of melting even the hardest geological layers, such as granite and basalt.

Unlike conventional drill bits that wear down over time, this method essentially burns a path downward, leaving behind a vitrified—glass-like—borehole lining. That could make it possible to drill up to 12 miles (about 20 kilometers) into the Earth's crust, far deeper than any current technology has managed. At such depths, geothermal energy becomes far more accessible. Water pumped into these zones turns supercritical—neither liquid nor gas—offering a high-efficiency thermal source for clean power.

Quaise aims to retrofit existing fossil fuel plants with this technology to tap into geothermal power, potentially providing a steady, carbon-free energy alternative. Their short-term plan includes launching a 50-megawatt geothermal plant near Bend, Oregon, with initial phases using conventional drilling before switching to their new wave-based approach.

The recent test used a 100-kilowatt system that achieved a drilling rate of around 2 centimeters per minute. A more powerful 1-megawatt version is already in the works for upcoming field trials.

World Daily News / WL Foods Corporation
May 29, 2025, 02:18:25 AM

𝗠𝗚𝗔 𝗞𝗜𝗡𝗔𝗞𝗔𝗪𝗔𝗪𝗔𝗡𝗚 𝗠𝗔𝗡𝗚𝗚𝗔𝗚𝗔𝗪𝗔!

Idol Raffy Tulfo bilang Vice Chairman ng Senate Committee on Labor and Employment noong May 26.

Inspiration & Hope / Error about Worship of Mary
May 27, 2025, 05:26:56 AM

A LEGIT MARY WORSHIPPER, BISHOP MAR MARI EMMANUEL
By Pastor's Notebook

My family in Christ, as you all know that this man was attacked and a lot of us applaud him for his teachings, but who is he really?

Do we listen to all of his teachings?
Are we using our discernment when listening?

Me? Im just hooked up, but as my brothers in Christ told me who he really was. Then I researched about his teachings.

There are some serious unbiblical things he talks about and we need to be sure that we arent falling into any traps by mere man.

Remember, the Holy Spirit is our teacher and guide.🙏🏻
I do pray that this man will heal in Jesus name if this attack was real, but if it was staged I pray that He would repent for deceiving people.

And I also pray that Mari Mari would repent from his teachings of Mary and other false teachings that he preached.

Father may you show all of us the truth in this situation. You are not the author of confusion.🙏🏻

Bowing down and praying is a form of worship. (Latreia same word as in Romans 12:1 as we study what is worship just yesterday on our online bible school teaching in Theology of Music Praise And Worship under Mobile Bible School Inc. ).

Catholics bow down and pray to statues and images of Mary which Scripture clearly forbids.

They worship Mary more than they do Jesus Christ. Nowhere in Scripture does it say Mary will be a mediator. Nowhere in Scripture does it say to pray and give thanks and honor to a
man-made carving or a man-made painting.

Nowhere in Scripture does it tell you to ask Mary to pray for you. Jesus Christ is eternal and Mary is not the mother of God because God has no mother. "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." Mary was not in the beginning, but Catholicism turns her into a goddess. The queen of heaven.

Mary was a sinner just like I am a sinner, just like you are a sinner, just like Paul was a sinner, just like Joseph was a sinner, etc. Jesus Christ came to die for the sins of the world including Mary and everyone including Mary has to accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior to get into Heaven. All the worship, all the praise, all the honor belongs to God and He will not let anyone take away from the glory that is rightfully His. God will not be mocked.

There will be no justifying sin and clear in your face biblical teachings when in front of God.

Indonesia has a relatively small but significant evangelical Christian population. While precise numbers for specifically "evangelical born-again Christians" can vary depending on the survey methodology and definitions used, here are the key figures:

**Overall Christian Population:**
- Christians make up approximately 9-11% of Indonesia's total population of around 275 million people
- This translates to roughly 25-30 million Christians total

**Evangelical/Protestant Breakdown:**
- The majority of Indonesian Christians are Protestant rather than Catholic
- Evangelical and Pentecostal denominations have been growing, particularly since the 1960s
- Estimates suggest evangelical Christians (including Pentecostals and other born-again denominations) comprise roughly 4-6% of Indonesia's total population
- This would indicate approximately **11-16 million evangelical Christians** in Indonesia

**Important Context:**
- Indonesia is the world's largest Muslim-majority country (about 87% Muslim)
- Christianity has deep historical roots there, introduced by Portuguese and Dutch colonizers
- There's been significant growth in evangelical and Pentecostal churches since the mid-20th century
- The largest Christian populations are in regions like North Sumatra, North Sulawesi, Papua, and parts of Java

These numbers should be considered estimates, as religious census data can vary and the definition of "evangelical born-again" may differ across surveys and denominations.

A Warning to Christians living in Philippines

A few days ago I was contact personally by a brother in Christ from the Philippines. He shared with me some false teachings that are propagated as Christian messages by Chinkee Tan of Victory Christian Fellowship which is a part of Every Nation Ministries.

Chinkee Tan is a prosperity, name it claim it false teacher but he claims that he isn't one, while teaching clearly another gospel.

You can check out his video and clearly see for yourself - http://youtu.be/jy5eX8ytvdY

Link to his FB page - www.facebook.com/ALWAYSCHINKPOSITIVE

If you are following his teaching, please understand this is not what the Bible teaches.

The "name it and claim it" or "prosperity gospel" is NOT BIBLICAL and is in many ways antithetical to the true gospel message and the clear teaching of Scripture. While there are many different versions of the name it and claim it philosophy preached today, they all have similar characteristics. At its best, this teaching comes from the misinterpretation and misunderstanding of some Scriptures, and, at its worst, it is a completely heretical teaching that has the characteristics of CULTIC DOCTRINE.

The roots of the Word of Faith movement and the name it and claim it message have more in common with new age metaphysics than with biblical Christianity. However, instead of us creating our reality with our thoughts, as new age proponents advise, name it and claim it teachers tell us that we can use the "power of faith" to create our own reality or get what we want. In essence, faith is redefined from "a trust in a holy and sovereign God despite our circumstances" to "a way of controlling God to give us what we want." Faith becomes a force whereby we can get what we want rather than an abiding trust in God even during times of trials and suffering.

There are many areas where name it and claim it departs from biblical Christianity. The teaching really exalts man and his "faith" above God. In fact, many of the more extreme Word of Faith teachers teach that man was created on terms of equality with God and that man is the same class of being that He is Himself. This dangerous and heretical teaching denies the very basic tenets of biblical Christianity, which is why the extreme proponents of the name it and claim it teaching must be considered to be cultic and not truly Christian.

Both the metaphysical cults and the name it and claim it teaching distort the truth and embrace the false teaching that our thoughts control reality. Whether it is the power of positive thinking or the prosperity gospel, the premise is the same—what you think or believe will happen is ultimately what controls what will happen. If you think negative thoughts or are lacking in faith, you will suffer or not get what you want. But on the other hand if you think positive thoughts or just have "enough faith," then you can have health, wealth, and happiness now. This false teaching appeals to one of man's most basic instincts, which is one reason why it is hugely popular.

While the prosperity gospel and the idea of controlling one's future with his thoughts or faith is appealing to sinful man, it is insulting to a sovereign God who has revealed Himself in Scripture. Instead of recognizing the absolute sovereign power of God as revealed in the Bible, the name it and claim it adherents embrace a false god who cannot operate apart from their faith. They present a false view of God by teaching that He wants to bless you with health, wealth, and happiness but cannot do so unless YOU have enough faith. Thereby God is no longer in control but man is. Of course, this is completely antithetical to what Scripture teaches. God does not depend upon man's "faith" to act. Throughout Scripture we see GOD BLESSING WHOM HE CHOOSES TO BLESS AND HEALING WHOM HE CHOOSES TO HEAL.

Another problem with the name it and claim it teaching is that it fails to recognize that Jesus Himself is the ultimate treasure worth sacrificing everything for (Matthew 13:44) and instead sees Jesus as little more than a way of getting what we want right now. Jesus' message is that a Christian is called to "DENY HIMSELF AND TAKE UP HIS CROSS AND FOLLOW ME. FOR WHOEVER WOULD SAVE HIS LIFE WILL LOSE IT, BUT WHOEVER LOSES HIS LIFE FOR MY SAKE WILL FIND IT. FOR WHAT WILL IT PROFIT A MAN IF HE GAINS THE WHOLE WORLD AND FORFEITS HIS SOUL? OR WHAT SHALL A MAN GIVE IN RETURN FOR HIS SOUL?" (Matthew 16:24–26). Contrast that to the message of the prosperity gospel. Rather than being a message of self-denial, the prosperity gospel is one of self-satisfaction. Its goal is not becoming more Christ like through sacrifice but having what we want here and now, clearly contradicting the words of our Saviour.

The Bible teaches that "all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus WILL BE PERSECUTED" (2 Timothy 3:12), but the name and claim it message is that any suffering we undergo is simply the result of a lack of faith. The prosperity gospel is completely focused on us getting the things the world has to offer, but 1 John 2:15 tells us we should not "love the world or the things in the world" and, in fact, those with a fondness for the things of the world become enemies of God (James 4:4). The message of the prosperity gospel simply cannot be any more opposite of what the Bible really teaches.

Paul warned Timothy about such men in 1 Timothy 6:5, 9-11. These men of "corrupt mind" supposed godliness was a means of gain and their desire for riches was a trap that brought them "into ruin and destruction" (v. 9). The pursuit of wealth is a dangerous path for Christians and one which God warns about: "For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs" (v. 10). If riches were a reasonable goal for the godly, Jesus would have pursued it. But He did not, preferring instead to have no place to lay His head (Matthew 8:20) and teaching His disciples to do the same. It should also be remembered that the only disciple concerned with wealth was Judas. Paul said covetousness is idolatry (Ephesians 5:5) and instructed the Ephesians to avoid anyone who brought a message of immorality or covetousness (Ephesians 5:6-7).

James 4:13-16 clearly contradicts this teaching: "Now listen, you who say, 'TODAY OR TOMORROW WE WILL GO TO THIS OR THAT CITY, SPEND A YEAR THERE, CARRY ON BUSINESS AND MAKE MONEY.' WHY, YOU DO NOT EVEN KNOW WHAT WILL HAPPEN TOMORROW. WHAT IS YOUR LIFE? YOU ARE A MIST THAT APPEARS FOR A LITTLE WHILE AND THEN VANISHES." Far from speaking things into existence in the future, we do not even know what tomorrow will bring or even whether we will be alive.

Instead of stressing the importance of wealth, the Bible warns against pursuing it. Believers, especially leaders in the church (1 Timothy 3:3), are to be free from the love of money (Hebrews 13:5). The love of money leads to all kinds of evil (1 Timothy 6:10). Jesus warned, "WATCH OUT! BE ON YOUR GUARD AGAINST ALL KINDS OF GREED; A MAN'S LIFE DOES NOT CONSIST IN THE ABUNDANCE OF HIS POSSESSIONS" (Luke 12:15). In sharp contrast to the Word of Faith emphasis on gaining money and possessions in this life, Jesus said, "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal" (Matthew 6:19). The irreconcilable contradictions between prosperity teaching and the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ is best summed up in the words of Jesus in Matthew 6:24, "YOU CANNOT SERVE BOTH GOD AND MONEY."

He, who has ears to hear, let him hear.

Dr. Timothy Keller's final words — "There is no downside for me leaving, not in the slightest" — carry profound spiritual meaning, especially within the context of his Christian faith.
Here's an elaboration:

  • Expression of Peace in Death
Keller was facing death from pancreatic cancer, a condition he had battled for some time. Yet, in his final moments, he expressed not fear or sorrow, but peace. This statement shows he had fully embraced the reality of his passing and was untroubled by it.
  • Confidence in Eternal Life
As a devout Christian and a preacher of the Gospel, Keller believed in the promise of eternal life through Jesus Christ. His words affirm that he viewed death not as an end, but as a passage to something far better — being in the presence of God. This reflects the Apostle Paul's sentiment in Philippians 1:21: "For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain."
  • Freedom from Regret or Fear
Saying "no downside" suggests that Keller had no regrets and no fears. He had lived a life of service, love, and faith, and was ready to face what came next. For many believers, such calm in the face of death is a sign of a life lived in alignment with one's faith and purpose.
  • Comfort for His Loved Ones
By declaring his readiness and peace, Keller offered comfort to his family and those around him. His words serve as a reassurance that he was not suffering spiritually or emotionally, and that they could find hope in his peace.
In summary, Keller's final words are a striking declaration of faith and hope. They encapsulate his lifelong message: that through faith in Christ, even death loses its sting.

MEGHAN MARKLE'S ESTRANGED FATHER AND BROTHER START A NEW LIFE IN CEBU

Thomas Markle, the estranged father of Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, has quietly relocated to Cebu, Philippines, alongside his son Thomas Jr., according to reports by The Mirror.

The pair now live in a £500-a-month (approx. ₱37,000) high-rise apartment—described as "grand by many folk in the Philippines." Before settling in their new home, they reportedly stayed in a local three-star hotel as they adjusted to their new surroundings.

Thomas Markle, now 80, was once a Hollywood lighting director. He has faced serious health challenges in recent years, including two heart attacks and a stroke, and now uses a cane to move around. Despite the challenges, he shared that Southeast Asia appeals to him for its warm people, affordable healthcare, and peaceful lifestyle.

"In South East Asia the medical care is good, you can live reasonably cheaply, the people are kind and respect older people... Mostly I just want peace," Markle previously said in an interview.

Though his relationship with Meghan has been strained since before her 2018 royal wedding, Thomas now seems focused on living out his remaining years away from the spotlight, seeking comfort, quiet, and connection in his new home abroad.
