No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit. Each tree is recognized by its own fruit. People do not pick figs from thornbushes, or grapes from briers. The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks."

Luke 6:43-45

Shout, and declare with your mouths and with you hearts! Give Glory, Honor, And Praise to the LORD GOD IN HEAVEN. For No one else is worthy besides Him. From which all things emanates from; and created from.

This entire day I was reading into the medical physiology of 'sleep'. REM and SWL types.
Then in our study session, my partner chimed in, "How ironic how we study sleep; yet we don't sleep enough."

lol, i couldn't help but chuckle. But yes, sleep. Ain't it grand?

The actions of the US Navy in the South China Sea solidifies and reiterates American position with the Philippines on national sovereignty. This was already mentioned in prior threads. Mr. Ferniz, for example, shared this with us in another thread.

Interesting discourse.

World Daily News / US Warships Head For China
March 26, 2009, 03:42:20 PM
A potential conflict was brewing last night in the South China Sea after President Obama dispatched heavily armed American destroyers to the scene of a naval standoff between the US and China at the weekend.

Mr Obama’s decision to send an armed escort for US surveillance ships in the area follows the aggressive and co-ordinated manoeuvres of five Chinese boats on Sunday. They harassed and nearly collided with an unarmed American vessel.

Washington accused the Chinese ships of moving directly in front of the US Navy surveillance ship Impeccable, forcing its crew to take emergency action, and to deploy a high-pressure water hose to deter the Chinese ships. Formal protests were lodged with Beijing after the incident.

On a day that Mr Obama and his senior officials met the Chinese Foreign Minister, Yang Jiechi, in Washington, Beijing showed no sign of backing down. Its military chiefs accused the unarmed US Navy ship of being on a spying mission.

Rosamia,

Most of the towns in Bohol were named after the towns, cities, regions of Spain that the Ecclesiastical friars, monks and priests came from.

The town of Anda was named after the coastal province of Andalucia in southern Spain. :)

Just like the town of Valencia, Bohol was named after the famous port-town of Valencia in Spain.

That is interesting observation on your part, Buwad. The American people and myself included will not deny that the world's opinion of the United States has changed in the last 8 years; can it be due to unilateralism ? An unpopular war? Who knows. Its their view. Its up to them.

All I know, my friend, is that the military and the government is not here to win a popularity contest. Their job is to protect the interests of the United States and for the good of the Global economy.

We have a new administration, and I can tell you that the general sentiment here is a feeling of hope. A hope for change. The Re-awakening of America for the 21st century.

#39921
This is an interesting article that reiterates the view of the American President, William McKinley. A pro-Imperialist and supporter of American Manifest Destiny. In regards to The Philippines.

I want you guys to read it and give a response.

Manifest Destiny, Continued: McKinley Defends U.S. Expansionism

In 1899 Americans divided sharply over whether to annex the Philippines. Annexationists and anti-annexationists, despite their differences, generally agreed that the U.S. needed opportunities for commercial expansion but disagreed over how to achieve that goal. Few believed that the Philippines themselves offered a crucial commercial advantage to the U.S., but many saw them as a crucial way station to Asia. “Had we no interests in China,” noted one advocate of annexation, “the possession of the Philippines would be meaningless.” In the Paris Peace negotiations, President William McKinley demanded the Philippines to avoid giving them back to Spain or allowing a third power to take them. One explanation of his reasoning came from this report of a delegation of Methodist church leaders. The emphasis on McKinley’s religious inspiration for his imperialist commitments may have been colored by the religious beliefs of General James Rusling. But Rusling’s account of the islands, falling unbidden on the U.S., and the arguments for taking the islands reflect McKinley’s official correspondence on the topic. McKinley disingenuously disavowed the U.S. military action that brought the Philippines under U.S. control, and acknowledged, directly and indirectly, the equally powerful forces of racism, nationalism, and especially commercialism, that shaped American actions.

The Message From Pres. McKinley:

Hold a moment longer! Not quite yet, gentlemen! Before you go I would like to say just a word about the Philippine business. I have been criticized a good deal about the Philippines, but don’t deserve it. The truth is I didn’t want the Philippines, and when they came to us, as a gift from the gods, I did not know what to do with them. When the Spanish War broke out Dewey was at Hongkong, and I ordered him to go to Manila and to capture or destroy the Spanish fleet, and he had to; because, if defeated, he had no place to refit on that side of the globe, and if the Dons were victorious they would likely cross the Pacific and ravage our Oregon and California coasts. And so he had to destroy the Spanish fleet, and did it! But that was as far as I thought then.

When I next realized that the Philippines had dropped into our laps I confess I did not know what to do with them. I sought counsel from all sidesâ€"Democrats as well as Republicansâ€"but got little help. I thought first we would take only Manila; then Luzon; then other islands perhaps also. I walked the floor of the White House night after night until midnight; and I am not ashamed to tell you, gentlemen, that I went down on my knees and prayed Almighty God for light and guidance more than one night. And one night late it came to me this wayâ€"I don’t know how it was, but it came: (1) That we could not give them back to Spainâ€"that would be cowardly and dishonorable; (2) that we could not turn them over to France and Germanyâ€"our commercial rivals in the Orientâ€"that would be bad business and discreditable; (3) that we could not leave them to themselvesâ€"they were unfit for self-governmentâ€"and they would soon have anarchy and misrule over there worse than Spain’s was; and (4) that there was nothing left for us to do but to take them all, and to educate the Filipinos, and uplift and civilize and Christianize them, and by God’s grace do the very best we could by them, as our fellow-men for whom Christ also died. And then I went to bed, and went to sleep, and slept soundly, and the next morning I sent for the chief engineer of the War Department (our map-maker), and I told him to put the Philippines on the map of the United States (pointing to a large map on the wall of his office), and there they are, and there they will stay while I am President!

You're right about the debt, my friend, considering the economic situation the United States is in.

HOWEVER, the policy the United States maintains is blanket security. Even in times of economic woes, the United States Military works in overdrive to protect the United States from those who would seek to harm it and its people. From within and from without.

#39923
Thats true, Buwad, I do agree that the size of the national debt is increasing. But national debt has nothing to do with national security. Because the American credit is still strong.

Buwad, the reason why the United States maintains a forward policy is to maintain the security in the global arena. And it was the United States' military single handedness that has prevented another terrorist attack like 911 from happening.

This has led the development of multi-faceted policies in dealing with terrorist groups; the United States Navy works cooperatively with other navies in dealing with the common threat. My friend.

I remember reading an article written by one of my professors several years back (during undergraduate years) that related the rule of Marcos with that of Robespierre's Administration in Revolutionary France. The romanticization of Robespierre and Marcos in their defiant hold of power, and the damage done to the people for the belief of national solidarity.

I wish I could find a copy of that article, so I could share it.

sige, lets move on na lang since this is a sensitive topic for some.

Peace with you Buwad. Ayaw lang pa suko, ha.

but history would have been more colorful had the Americans left Marcos to defend himself against the rioting mob of edsa 1, hahaha.

Marcos in the end did control himself and showed his brilliancy in the very end. the mob were rioting, the Army was called out to put them down--via live fire.

Marcos, seeing the inevitability, instead of brutally putting down the protests by force, he acquiesced to the will of the people.

A true Machiavellian ruler, yet with the realism of Thomas Paine and Locke.

As of right now the US has no interest in making the Philippines a state. Right now, too much problems to worry about. The relationship between Manila and Washington will remain: Strategic Allies.

90 million mouths to feed would be a strategic problem, right now. Considering the economic situation.

But who knows. 50-100 years from now, will be a different story.

General Topic / Re: Doomsday for America?

What we are experiencing is a natural flow in economics. The same happened in 1991 when the US economy was shaking Desert Storm in 1991. After the election of President Clinton in 1992, the US economy slowly grew and picked up momentum.

Wallstreet predicts that by the beginning of the 1st quarter in 2010, the US economy will pick up and bounce back again.

We are a capitalist economy, a market economy. What is harming us is the Liberal news media that is focusing too much on the negatives and hamping and dissauding buyers and investors. The US economy will pick up; the US economy is a critical player and the keystone in the Global Economy. The world is in economic crisis, not just the US.

Remember, everything is a cycle. Ups and downs. Let us not underestimate the power of the American Economy and the Middle Class.

God Bless the USA.

Actually, Buwad, US Naval Power is on the rise. At this moment, 2 more Super Aircraft carriers are under construction. And will augment the United States Navy to meet the challenges of the 21st century in the war against Terrorism, Fighting Piracy, and potential threats to American Strategic Interests and its Allies.

#39938
Buwad, let us be more realistic in analysis. The combined navies of the world does not even equal the United States Navy. In terms of tonnage and in terms of fire power. The United States' Navy is centered on 18 Super aircraft carriers and surrounding carrier task force ships that can react and respond to any imminent global crisis anywhere around the world within mere hours.

China does not even have an aircraft carrier or a blue water navy. How can it contend with that of the United States?

Buwad, The US Navy as well as its Nato allies and international parties have been patrolling the Gulf of Aden to assess the piracy in the region.

1 in 10 of international merchant ships are hijacked in the volatile region of East Africa. The US Navy works closely with its NATO allies (namely UK) in monitoring the region. Other countries have come to aid the US Navy in the battle to curve piracy activities; nations like India and China have sent their own navies to protect their respective merchant marine ships as well.

sinulat ni Mike Ligalig
circa March 22, 2009 (Bangkok, Thailand)

mahimo nga bas-on ug galingon sila sa makina

Some of these words are so deep that I don't even know the meaning.

Beautiful poem, Mike.

Simply beautiful and deep.

he set my feet on a rock
and gave me a firm place to stand.

3 He put a new song in my mouth,
a hymn of praise to our God.
       Many will see and fear
and put their trust in the LORD.

4 Blessed is the man
who makes the LORD his trust,
who does not look to the proud,
to those who turn aside to false gods.

5 Many, O LORD my God,
are the wonders you have done.
The things you planned for us
       no one can recount to you;
were I to speak and tell of them,
they would be too many to declare.

6 Sacrifice and offering you did not desire,
       but my ears you have pierced  ;
       burnt offerings and sin offerings
       you did not require.

7 Then I said, "Here I am, I have come—
it is written about me in the scroll.

8 I desire to do your will, O my God;
your law is within my heart."

9 I proclaim righteousness in the great assembly;
I do not seal my lips,
       as you know, O LORD.

10 I do not hide your righteousness in my heart;
I speak of your faithfulness and salvation.
I do not conceal your love and your truth
       from the great assembly.

11 Do not withhold your mercy from me, O LORD;
may your love and your truth always protect me.

12 For troubles without number surround me;
my sins have overtaken me, and I cannot see.
They are more than the hairs of my head,
and my heart fails within me.

13 Be pleased, O LORD, to save me;
O LORD, come quickly to help me.

14 May all who seek to take my life
       be put to shame and confusion;
may all who desire my ruin
       be turned back in disgrace.

15 May those who say to me, "Aha! Aha!"
be appalled at their own shame.

16 But may all who seek you
       rejoice and be glad in you;
may those who love your salvation always say,
       "The LORD be exalted!"

17  Yet I am poor and needy;
may the Lord think of me.
       You are my help and my deliverer;
O my God, do not delay.

Matthew 6:19-24 NIV

'Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. 'The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are good, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness! 'No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.`

Aleth, this is such a great song.

Lyrics ni:

Mutya ka Baleling sa katahum
Timgas pa sa puti nga baybayon
Sa kasingkasing ka panganduyon
Perlas ka nga angay gyud angkonon

Tila na Baleling layo-layo
Si Tangkay Baleling pasibuto
Bangkaw-banal Baleling matayo
Utol kaw Baleling pamalayo

Narration:

Mutya ka Baleling sa katahum
Timgas sa puti nga baybayon
Sa kasingkasing ka panganduyon
Perlas ka nga angay gyud angkonon

Kon ikaw Baleling ang mawala
Kon ikaw Baleling di ko makita
Gugma ko Baleling magahulat
Taliwala ning lawod sa mga luha

Poems and Poets / The Touch Of The Master's Hand
March 23, 2009, 03:26:23 AM
By: Myra Brooks Welch

It was battered and scarred,
And the auctioneer thought it
hardly worth his while
To waste his time on the old violin,
but he held it up with a smile.

"What am I bid, good people", he cried,
"Who starts the bidding for me?"
"One dollar, one dollar, Do I hear two?"
"Two dollars, who makes it three?"
"Three dollars once, three dollars twice, going for three,"

But, No,
From the room far back a gray bearded man
Came forward and picked up the bow,
Then wiping the dust from the old violin
And tightening up the strings,
He played a melody, pure and sweet
As sweet as the angel sings.

The music ceased and the auctioneer
With a voice that was quiet and low,
Said "What now am I bid for this old violin?"
As he held it aloft with its' bow.

"One thousand, one thousand, Do I hear two?"
"Two thousand, Who makes it three?"
"Three thousand once, three thousand twice,
Going and gone", said he.

The audience cheered,
But some of them cried,
"We just don't understand."
"What changed its' worth?"
Swift came the reply.
"The Touch of the Masters Hand."

And many a man with life out of tune
All battered with bourbon and gin
Is auctioned cheap to a thoughtless crowd
Much like that old violin

A mess of pottage, a glass of wine,
A game and he travels on.
He is going once, he is going twice,
He is going and almost gone.

But the Master comes,
And the foolish crowd never can quite understand,
The worth of a soul and the change that is wrought
By the Touch of the Masters' Hand.

The Fall Of The Roman Empire

Let us discuss this topic, which is rather interesting and sparks my attention, and am also glad that Datu posted this topic thread since it bears great importance for the development and culmination of Western European Culture and History, and the world at large.

How did the Roman Empire Fall? And Why? How can such a mighty Empire that commanded a military force that numbered close to 2 million men could have fallen? How can an empire with such a vast navy fall?

As I said earlier in my posts, the fall of the Greatest Empire in the history of the world was not a result of one individual or one factor, but, instead, was an effect and an inevitable result of multifactorial causes.

By the 5th Century AD, the Roman Empire had grown so large and so vast that over 40 million souls lived within its political sphere. One Fourth of the world's populations lived and died under the rule of the Roman Caesars. By the 5th century, the Roman Empire was divided in two: The Western Roman Empire, whose capital was in Rome and the Eastern Roman Empire, whose capital was in Constantinople. The reasons for the division of the empire was simply political and military. The empire had grown too large to be controlled under one political unit, due to the vastness of the terrain, and areas, ruling over its provinces and effectively emanating Imperial decrees from Rome to its distant provinces took months even years to occur. Bureaucracy was too large, and due to that aspect, corruption was rampant. Constantine the Great, the first Christian Roman Emperor tried to unite the two empires again--establishing a neo-Augutinian edict to unify the two sister cities (Rome and Constantinople), however, following emperors had difficulty in maintaining the military and dealing with the political squabbles in the Imperial Senate--thereby made it mandatory to permanently divide the Roman Empire in two.

Note that corruption was already a problem. What exacerbated the problem and led to the ultimate fall of the declining Western Roman Empire was the presence of the Vandals and Visigoths.

Due to the shear expanse of the territory of Rome, most of its legions were scattered around the provinces, many in Brittania, many in Hispanola, many in North Africa, Many in Judea (Palastina), many in Latinium (Italian peninsula), many in Germania, in Gaul, etc) Due to the scattering of the legions, Rom had difficulty in dealing with the constant arrival of Barbarians arriving in its borders and settling in Roman territories. Rome made peace with the Visigoths, and utilized them to augment its legions; a result of this closeness was Visigoths learning of Roman military cadence and tactics. Which would haunt Rome in the future.

During the continuity of these events, the Roman Military Machine had been greatly weakened by constant wars, and the de-centralization that occurred after Barbarians populated the empire. Many of Rome's soldier's adapted and took up barbarian culture (an effect of being stationed in the distant provinces and away form Roman culture). At the same time, there was continuous political bickering in the Imperial Capital. Senators against senators, bribery was rampant, corruption within the bureaucracy widespread and the Emperors themselves were being murdered on a regular basis--thereby manifesting an environment and feeling of 'inconcistency' within the Empire.

The fall of Rome culminated in the 5th century. Alaric, the Visigoth King and a Roman Magister Militum (master soldier) stormed the city of Rome after months of sieging the Great City.
The Visigoths were able to storm the city so quickly and so decisively because the tactics they utilized were Roman Tactics. They used Roman military sieging techniques (which they learned form the Romans, ironically).

Rome's Military Legions were unable to come to the aid of the City due to preoccupation in military campaigns and distant wars (Against the Suenes in Spain, against the Berbers in North Africa, against the Vandals, against the Ostrogoths, the Dacians, etc) By the time a Roman Military expedition was sent to relieve the City of Rome, it was already too late.

The Emperor was abdicated from the throne, and the Visigoths penetrated and had already ripped through the Imperial City. The Heart of the Roman Empire.

Logistics and the size of the empire was its ultimate downfall.

How about Martin Luther, I thought he was one responsible to weakened and led to collapsed the strongest and powerful Roman Empire.

Datu Dagohoy,

Martin Luther was a Catholic German monk who found inadequacies in the practices of the Roman Catholic Church prior to the Great Reformation. Corruption, selling of forgiveness and the lot was widespread. And his nailing of this Thesis on the Church door signaled the beginning of the Protestant Reformation.

Martin Luther was an intelligent individual, whose mastery in Biblical passages was astute as his observation in Catholic Doctrine. Afterall, Martin Luther himself was a Catholic Monk who seeked merely to reform the Catholic Church.

His actions lead to not only the reformation of the Catholic Church, but to the split between Catholics and Protestants. An interesting and colorful discourse in European history as well as Christian Historiography.

you mean to say that there was an Un-Holy Roman Empire, who were those well known personalities involved in that Empire other than Emperor Constantine whom the key to Christianized the entire empire?

Datu Dagohoy,

The Holy Roman Empire was nothing more than a name that was utilized by the Germano-Frankish peoples that populated the Holy Roman Empire under the banner of Charlemagne.

The reason why the term, 'Holy Roman Empire' was used by the Germano-Franks was to give a sense of religious-political legitimacy to their Imperial Status.

It was not a Roman Empire, in the literary sense, since the City of Rome was not the capital. But it, did, however, gain the blessings and support of the Papacy in Rome; thereby gaining authority and legitimacy.

Roman Catholicism was the Imperial State religion of the Holy Roman Empire. And as a political structure and unit, it did facilitate and augment the spread of Roman Catholicism (Christianity in the sense, considering there was no concept of multidenominations prior to the Protestant Reformation in the 16th century).

What the Roman Empire started, the Holy Roman Empire under the Germano-Franks built upon. It was Europe's version of trying to establish a sense of unified order and absolutism that was common and nostalgic of the epochs under the Classic Roman Empire. The Empire that was ruled under the God-Emperors (The Caesar's)

Don't Wanna See Your Face, You Better Disappear
The Fire's In Their Eyes And Their Words Are Really Clear
So Beat It, Just Beat It

[2nd Verse]
You Better Run, You Better Do What You Can
Don't Wanna See No Blood, Don't Be A Macho Man
You Wanna Be Tough, Better Do What You Can
So Beat It, But You Wanna Be Bad

Just Beat It, Beat It, Beat It, Beat It
No One Wants To Be Defeated

It Doesn't Matter Who's Wrong Or Right
Just Beat It, Beat It
Just Beat It, Beat It
Just Beat It, Beat It

[3rd Verse]
They're Out To Get You, Better Leave While You Can
Don't Wanna Be A Boy, You Wanna Be A Man
You Wanna Stay Alive, Better Do What You Can
So Beat It, Just Beat It

[4th Verse]
You Have To Show Them That You're Really Not Scared
You're Playin' With Your Life, This Ain't No Truth Or Dare
They'll Kick You, Then They Beat You,
Then They'll Tell You It's Fair
So Beat It, But You Wanna Be Bad

Just Beat It, Beat It, Beat It, Beat It

Lyrics

Close your eyes, give me your hand, darling
Do you feel my heart beating, do you understand?
Do you feel the same, am I only dreaming?
Is this burning an eternal flame?

I believe it's meant to be, darling
I watch when you are sleeping, you belong to me
Do you feel the same, am I only dreaming
Or is this burning an eternal flame?

Say my name, sun shines through the rain
A whole life so lonely, and then you come and ease the pain
I don't want to lose this feeling

[break]

Say my name, sun shines through the rain
A whole life so lonely, and then you come and ease the pain
I don't want to lose this feeling

Close your eyes and give me your hand
Do you feel my heart beating, do you understand?
Do you feel the same, am I only dreaming
Or is this burning an eternal flame?

[break]

Is this burning an eternal flame?

An eternal flame?

(Close your eyes and give me your hand
Do you feel my heart beating, do you understand?
Do you feel the same, am I only dreaming
Or is this burning an eternal flame?)
