1. Togo the Sled Dog

By Katy Steinmetz
Monday, Mar. 21, 2011

In 1925, a ravaging case of diphtheria broke out in the isolated Alaskan village of Nome.  No plane or ship could get the serum there, so the decision was made for multiple sled dog teams to relay the medicine across the treacherous frozen land.  The dog that often gets credit for eventually saving the town is Balto, but he just happened to run the last, 55-mile leg in the race.  The sled dog who did the lion's share of the work was Togo.  His journey, fraught with white-out storms, was the longest by 200 miles and included a traverse across perilous Norton Sound â€" where he saved his team and driver in a courageous swim through ice floes.  Togo, we salute you.

2. Bucephalus the Horse

By Katy Steinmetz
Monday, Mar. 21, 2011

Bucephalus was the famed steed of Alexander the Great.  As legend has it, Alexander broke the wild horse when no one else dared go near â€" not by force but by turning the horse's head toward the sun, understanding that Bucephalus was simply afraid of his own shadow.  No one but Alexander could mount the horse after. As one history puts it, "Long did this noble animal share the toils and dangers of his master; and this was the horse that Alexander delighted to honor."  So excellent was Buchephalus in battle that when he was once lost, Alexander is said to have threatened the destruction of an entire country unless he was returned (which he was).

3. Stubby the Dog

By Frances Romero Monday, Mar. 21, 2011

Stubby was just another stray dog before he found his way into an area near Yale University where the 102nd infantry, Yankee Division was training for World War I.  Private J. Robert Conroy found the puppy there in 1917 and named him Stubby on account of his short tail.  Although animals were not allowed in the regiment, Stubby was allowed to stick around because he was smart and boosted morale.  He learned the bugle calls, the drills and even a modified salute where he put his right paw on his right eyebrow.  Later he proved his usefulness at war.  Conroy smuggled the pooch aboard a ship to France, and when he was discovered by Conroy's commanding officer, Stubby won him over with an adorable salute.

He was allowed to join the soldiers on the front lines, where he was once injured during a gas strike.  Having developed a sensitivity to the smell of gas, he was able to save the soldiers as they slept through another gas attack.  He even thwarted a German soldier's attempts to map out the layout of Allied trenches by biting him on the leg and subduing him until U.S. soldiers arrived.  By the end of the war, Stubby had served in 17 battles and had developed a knack for locating his wounded comrades.  The dog became a lifetime member of the American Legion and later became Georgetown University's mascot when Conroy went to study law there.  In 1921 the pooch was awarded a gold hero dog's medal that was commissioned by the Humane Education Society.  He lived until 1926.

4. Cher Ami the Pigeon

By Kayla Webley
Monday, Mar. 21, 2011

Pigeons aren't often thought of as the smartest of our feathered friends, but the incessantly cooing, bread-crumb-eating birds have their uses.  During World War I and World War II, the U.S. military enlisted more than 200,000 pigeons to conduct surveillance and relay messages.  One such pigeon, Cher Ami ("Dear Friend" in French), flew for the U.S. Army Signal Corps in France during WWI.  He flew 12 important messages before being struck by enemy fire.  Despite being shot in the breast and leg, he managed to deliver the message, which was found dangling from his shattered leg.  His brave dedication to the mission led to the rescue of 194 soldiers in Major Charles Whittlesey's "Lost Battalion."  Cher Ami, who died in 1919, likely as a result of his battle wounds, was awarded the French Croix de Guerre award for his heroic service and was inducted into the Racing Pigeon Hall of Fame.  His one-legged body is on display at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History's "Price of Freedom: Americans at War" exhibit in Washington, D.C.

5. Scarlett the Cat

By Katy Steinmetz
Monday, Mar. 21, 2011

Though Cats was in the middle of its Broadway run in 1996, New York City's most famous feline that year made a more daring play out in Brooklyn. Scarlett, a homeless calico, had been staying with her 4-week-old kittens in a garage that had been damaged in several fires.  The shelter again went ablaze and one firefighter arrived on the scene to find Scarlett amidst her brood, terribly burned from having carried them out one by one.  The story quickly hit the tabloids and more than 1,000 offers to adopt the entire family rolled into the shelter where Scarlett was staying.  She eventually found a home with a local woman and then spent her days being pampered and courted by the likes of talk show host Sally Jessy Raphael until passing away in 2008.

6. Trakr the Dog

By Frances Romero
Monday, Mar. 21, 2011

Trained as a police dog in Halifax, Nova Scotia â€" where he worked for six years, helping to find more than $1 million in contraband â€" Trakr had retired in May 2001 before he and his trainer, Canadian police officer James Symington, drove 15 hours to help recovery efforts in New York City following the Sept. 11 attacks.  Trakr was credited with locating the last survivor found beneath the rubble.  Two days after arriving and searching for survivors the entire time, Trakr collapsed from smoke inhalation, exhaustion and burns and was treated for his injuries before returning to Canada.  Later in life Trakr suffered from a degenerative neurological disorder that experts say could have been caused by his work at Ground Zero.  Before Trakr died in April 2009, his DNA was entered into a cloning contest by Symington and was later chosen for use.  In June of that year, five cloned Trakrs were born.

7. Simon the Cat

By Josh Sanburn
Monday, Mar. 21, 2011

Aboard a British Royal Navy ship sailing down China's Yangtze River, Simon the Cat â€" a long-time favorite of the sailors on the H.M.S. Amethyst (seen above) â€" was hit by shrapnel as a result of an attack by Chinese Communist forces.  Simon was injured in the leg and back, and his whiskers were singed off.  Some of the sailors didn't think he'd make it through the night.  But eventually, Simon recuperated enough to wipe out a massive rodent infestation on board the ship, eventually taking down an enormous rat the sailors named Mao Tse Tung.  Later, his exploits became known around the world; he even managed to garner a TIME obit.  In August 1949, Simon was awarded the Dickin Medal, which honors animals in wartime.

Time’s Obituary for Simon the Cat
Foreign News: In Honored Memory
Monday, Dec. 12, 1949

The most respected cat in all Britain was a small, black, white-bibbed torn named Simon. As ship's cat on board the sloop H.M.S.  Amethyst on her heroic voyage down China's Yangtze River last spring (TIME, May 2), Simon got his white whiskers singed by a Communist shell, his face and legs scratched by shrapnel.  But throughout the Amethyst's cruise, Simon carried on in his billet, caught at least one mouse every day.

When the Amethyst got back to England, Simon was interned for the regulation six months' quarantine required of animals entering the country, but his grateful nation had not forgotten him.  Reporters from far & wide came to see and photograph the solemn hero, and he was promised the Dickin Medal* for heroic animals, to be awarded by London's Lord Mayor on his release.

Last week, on the eve of getting his medal, Simon took cold, a day later died.  In a dark wood coffin draped with the Union Jack, he was buried in a pet cemetery at Ilford, Essex.  A wooden marker at his head bore the epitaph: "In Honored Memory of Simon, D.M."

*Created in 1943 by Britain's People's Dispensary for Sick Animals, to honor animal bravery in the armed forces, and named for the dispensary's founder, Maria Elizabeth Dickin.

8. Moko the Dolphin

By Kayla Webley
Monday, Mar. 21, 2011

In the summer of 2008, Moko the bottlenose dolphin was a constant fixture at a beach along the east coast of New Zealand's North Island, coming by every few days to play with swimmers.  But one day her visit was more business than pleasure when she showed up just in time to save two beached pygmy sperm whales.  Successfully doing what humans could not, Moko seemed to communicate with the two whales and lead them safely back into deeper water.  Had the dolphin not shown up, rescuers said, the mother whale and calf likely would have been killed as they had resisted human attempts to herd them to sea.  "I don't speak whale and I don't speak dolphin," Conservation Officer Malcolm Smith told the BBC in 2008, "but there was obviously something that went on because the two whales changed their attitude from being quite distressed to following the dolphin quite willingly and directly along the beach and straight out to sea."

9. Japanese Rescue Dog

By Katy Steinmetz
Monday, Mar. 21, 2011

Amidst the chaotic, haunting images that have defined news coverage of Japan since the earthquake hit on March 11, a heartwarming scene emerged last week.  A video captured a haggard dog standing guard and protecting an injured companion in the middle of a mutilated landscape, occasionally offering a comforting stroke of the paw.  It took rescue workers an hour to convince the sentry to leave the ward.  The injured dog was then taken to a clinic, the other to a shelter.  The world was left with a heartening lesson: Sometimes a dog can be another dog's best friend, too.

10. Magic the Miniature Mare

By Katy Steinmetz
Monday, Mar. 21, 2011

Sometimes heroism can come in the quieter, more unassuming guise of a miniature therapy horse (such as the one seen above).  Magic, a blue-eyed mare, regularly visited patients who needed comfort, whether in group homes, hospitals or hospice-care facilities, but one particular interaction gained her recognition as AARP's Most Heroic Pet in 2010.  Magic went to visit a patient who had lived in an assisted-living facility and hadn't spoken to anyone during her three years there.  But the moment she laid eyes on Magic, she said, "Isn't she beautiful?"  Those first words caused the staff to break out in tears, and she continued to communicate from that point onward.  The Florida program that brought the two together, Gentle Carousel Miniature Therapy Horses, continues to work its magic in the Sunshine State.

Canines often play a significant role in military operations as they can crawl into small spaces, find enemy soldiers and report back unnoticed with TV footage from a camera attached to their heads.  Their primary functions "are finding explosives and conducting searches and patrols," Maj. Wes Ticer, a spokesman for the United States Special Operations Command, told the New York Times, but  Ticer said that many times dogs save "the lives of the Special Operations Forces with whom they operate."

The NYT reports that according to Gen. David H. Petraus, commander of United States forces in Afghanistan, that dogs are useful because “the capability they bring to the fight cannot be replicated by man or machine.”

German Shepherds and Belgian Malinois dogs have the skills best-suited to the job (like sense of smell, courage, athleticism, endurance and intelligence) and thus are most commonly used in the military. It just goes to show a dog is a man's best friend â€" as long as he's on your side.

Canine of the Year: Military Dog Reportedly Assisted in bin Laden Raid

By: Jenny Wilson

Accompanying the Navy Seals who completed the bin Laden mission was a faithful four-legged fighter.  The trained military dog, either a German Shepherd or a Belgian Malinois, was attached to a human Seal and lowered from a helicopter into the compound. Wearing canine armor, he went along to sniff out hidden explosives or, if necessary, find a secret room of bin Laden's.

The heavily-indebted Chen Fuchao fell eight metres onto a partially-inflated emergency air cushion. He was hospitalised with wrist and back injuries.

Chen Fuchao may be charged with disturbing public order. Lai was accused of causing intentional injury."  (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/)

Cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs

Michael Capretta of Snohomish, Wash., was arrested and charged with animal cruelty in 2009 after shooting his neighbor's dog Molly (pictured) and dragging it to death behind his ATV, nearly running over Molly's owner, Mary Fairhurst.  Capretta initially denied having had anything to do with the dog's death, but officers found her collar in his pocket and the ATV hidden nearby.

It seems the trouble began over a property line dispute in which Capretta had allegedly cut down a line of the Fairhursts' trees and replaced them with junked cars.  Capretta must have thought that wasn't enough and started piling cat feces on his side of the property line.  The mountain grew so large that the county ordered it buried, which required the use of an excavator to accomplish.

In 2006, when two dogs escaped the Fairhursts' property, the family claimed to have heard a gunshot, and one of the dogs was never seen again.  A couple of weeks later, Molly got out and they again heard a gunshot.  This time she returned with buckshot in her back, but survived.

After the 2009 incident, Capretta was charged with first degree animal cruelty for the death of the Fairhursts' dog.  Before the arraignment, Capretta, 56, committed suicide, after which police searched his property and found several freezers filled with dead cats.  The Fairhursts are suing Capretta's estate for emotional trauma caused by Molly's death.

truly a wrong sense of entitlement that, when felt repeatedly, is said to cause the loss of skills by the very people who had to learn to help themselves in the first place.

Maayo nga gipatangtang napod ni P-Noy ang ngan sa mga politico sa mga billboards of project sa gobyerno... ambot nganong nauso to nga di man to ila kaugalingong kwarta gigamit sa project kondili kwarta sa mga molupyo sa Pilipinas in whose name nangutang ang atong pang gobierno sa World Bank o kung asa to sila nakahuwam og wawartz

i really hated that.  nahawasan gyod ko nga nawad-an ang mga dalan ug mga hitsura ug ngalan ug rock stars who cannot sing unya boto ra diay ang gikinahanglan.  can you imagine a highway with a big billboard that says 'this project was brought to you through the kindness of congressman so-and-so'?  feeling nako, gihimo tang gago aning mga tawhana.

You performed greatly as well, Isles. The discourse between Way Nada and yourself was filled with in depth research. Way Nada's responses were sterile and almost unblemished with emotionality. I suspect he is some sort of educator or an intelligent banker. lol. Your responses were heated, filled with gut and grim, emotionally driven. As always, you are driven and wily like the pacific waves crashing into the isles. Your performance was passionately given. I commend you both.

:)

thanks for the commendation; i need it like a need a hole in the head.

oh, by the way, in case you have forgotten, the most intelligent bankers as bankers can be are those wall street bankers who brought the u.s. economy down.

meantime, the discussion is on whether or not marcos deserves a hero’s burial and you end up rating us?  really, lorenz, since when did you learn that you can be an arbitrator and an analyst of people's thoughts to boot ?  even your use of words leaves much room to be desired.  “Gut and grim, emotionally driven”?  whoa.  ???  ‘driven and wily”?  heaven help me.  careful with the word “sterile”; it could also mean “barren, unfruitful, unproductive”.

one thing is clear; you express appreciation for opinions that dovetail with your own as surely as you continue to piss people off with your airs and sanctimony.  i believe we’re quite familiar with the terms narcissism and messiah complex.  you even have the gall to delete posts that run counter to your self-regard.

but could you do tblanders a favor by letting discussions be sans ratings of the discussants and their stands?  these remind me of an orangutan with delusions.

DON’T YOU DELETE THIS as you did some of my posts in the past, when they ran counter to your sense of great self!  this is a forum unfortunate enough to have you as one of the administrators, but I can live with that for as long as you don’t make this a forum for your conceit.

those pacific waves crashing into the isles may come back to you as a tsunami.

10 reasons why Marcos should not be declared a hero

Absurdia
Carla Montemayor
April 15, 2011

Must we really go through the reasons why this would be a travesty?  Fine.  Here are the top 10 reasons why, some of them dredged up from the depths of my frustration.

#1. An estimated 10,000 Filipinos killed, tortured and brutalized during Martial Law.  That’s already 10,000 reasons, but let me continue.

#2. His widow will be entitled to a pension.  And we all know she’s already got enough cashâ€"our cash.
I have a theory: we will stand an ever lesser chance of getting our money back from them.  How can any court seize property/funds that belong to a “hero”?  That’s like attempting to impound Rizal’s ancestral home in Laguna (assuming JR stole anything, which he didn’t).

#3. Fake war medals.  FAKE.  Which bit of “fake war medals” is ambiguous?  Okay, he might have served in a clerical position with the US Army but the rest of his alleged heroic exploits have been exposed as lies.  The US Army has never acknowledged the existence of the guerrilla unit he claimed to have led (Ang Mga Maharlika), nor rewarded him for his alleged bravery at the Battle of Bessang Pass.  Why should he be buried with real heroes?

#4. Which brings us to Ka Boni Gillego. Not only did he expose Marcos’s fake medals, he also served as a truly honourable member of the House of Representatives.  Now there’s a great man.  Want to spit on Ka Boni’s grave?  Make Marcos a hero.

#5. DECS will have to revise all history textbooks to glorify Marcos and depict the Martial Law era as a peaceful and prosperous epoch in Philippine history.  Sayang ang papel.  Save the trees, save the planet!

#6. About 25 years from now, a young, brilliant and ambitious politician will run for Congress, then for the senate, then for President.  Then he’ll proclaim that he will save the nation from communism/terrorism/climate change, round up all his critics and throw them in jail, proclaim himself President for life and loot the national coffers dry.  Guess which history books he had been reading as a child?

#7. Speaking of revisionism, we will have to declare Pinochet, Suharto, Duvalier, Somoza and the entire barkada of tyrants and crooks from that era heroes, as well.  Oh, and let’s not forget Muammar Gadaffi, though he’s still alive and being overthrown by enraged Libyans.  When he, um, exits from this world, he’ll have to be declared a hero, too.  It’s all for the sake of consistency.  Can’t make one tyrant a hero while the others stay tyrantsâ€"it’s not fair.

Hey, why not go further? Why not also re-classify Hitler as a hero and the Holocaust as a hoax?  (Warning: Making these assertions in public will land you in jail in many European countries.)

#8. Amay Bisaya will be vindicated.  All this time he has professed that the Apo was a patriot and now he’ll be proven right.  Amay Bisaya gloating and doing the dance of joy.  Sit there and contemplate that image.

#9. It will validate the decision of 216 members of the House of Representatives.  Do you really want to give any satisfaction to those scumbags?

It is our moral obligation as responsible Filipino citizens to deny these sleazy lowlifes any form of happiness. They have no qualms about doing it to us.  There they sit in that hall, claiming to represent us, addressing each other as “Honorable,” enjoying the perks of our democracy while savaging it, along with our history.

Here’s news for the 216: no one will remember you in 20 years’ time.  But next elections, we will.

#10. Marcos built his own monument to himselfâ€"that automatically disqualifies him from being a hero.  There is one inviolable rule for would-be heroes.  All great men and women know it, though it’s not written anywhere: You cannot honor yourself in any way while you’re still alive. I t’s just not done.  It marks you out as an egomaniacâ€"not hero material.

A portrait is fine; all presidents have their portraits painted for posterity.  An autobiography is acceptable.  But a bust the size of an asteroid is never cool.  Sobrang laki ng ulo.  Literally and figuratively.

I guess tyrants cannot be modest by definition.  I doubt whether they understand that greatness is like a nickname: you cannot give it to yourself; others must confer it upon you. (Newsbreak)

hahaha. to be honest with you, i always get asked at work if i am indian or pakistani or some kind of latino :P

very rarely am i asked if i'm filipino. one time , during an interview at Northwestern University, my clinical director, a Filipino Physician, talked to me in English. For the duration of the 30-40 minute interview, she did not once think i was pinoy. At the end of our interview, i said to her, 'Maraming Salamat'. She was startled and said, "Oh, you're Filipino?"

"Yes, I am."

"Oh i thought you were Cuban or Latino."

lol.

Silly lady.

silly, indeed.  she may not be too familiar with the filipino face then.  next time you're asked, you can always kindly remind the curious not to judge you by the color of your skin.  you're the most malay-looking hereabouts, judging from your different avatars.   ;)

Lessons in Compassion

The greatest gift you can give your child, and thus all of society, is a sense of responsibility.  In our world of materialism we have substituted giving toys for the giving of our time.  Gandhi said: "The greatness of a nation, and its moral progress, can be judged by the way that its animals are treated."  Teaching kindness is not a new concept.  In 1693, English philosopher, John Locke said: "People should be accustomed, from their cradles, to be tender to all creatures, and to spoil or waste nothing at all."

Consider the evidence concluded from the following studies:

A  1985 study found that a child who learns aggression against living creatures is more likely to  rape, abuse, and kill other humans as an adult.

In a 1983 study, 88% of families where physical abuse occurred, animals in that home were also abused.  In about two thirds of the cases, the abusive parent had killed or injured the animals to discipline a child.

A 1988 study of twenty eight rapist-murderers found that 36 percent had engaged in acts of animal cruelty in childhood, and 46 percent during adolescence.

In a study of prison inmates, 48 percent of the rapists and 30 percent of the child molesters admitted to having been cruel to animals.

Animal abuse is present in nearly 90 percent of the pet owning homes where there is physical abuse of children.  Other colleagues have found that over 70 percent of pet-owning women who seek protection in women's' shelters have had a loved pet threatened, injured or killed by their abusers.  The victimization of animals has also been associated with the abuse of the elderly and the disabled.

Our Lady of Perpetual Help (or of Succour) or "Mater de Perpetuo Succursu" (Official Latin Title) Our Mother of Perpetual Help is a title given to the Blessed Virgin Mary, associated with a Byzantine icon of the same name, said to be 13th or 14th century, but perhaps 15th century.  The icon has been in Rome since at least the late 15th century, and is currently in the church of Sant'Alfonso di Liguori all'Esquilino.  In the Eastern Orthodox Church this iconography is known as the Virgin of the Passion or Theotokos of the Passion.  Many Roman Catholics believe the icon to be a true copy of Saint Luke's table painting, and consider it to be a miraculous imprint of the Blessed Virgin Mary both in the Latin and Orthodox communities.

Due to the Redemptorist Priests who had been appointed as missionaries of this icon, the image has become very popular among Roman Catholics in particular, and has been very much copied and reproduced.  Modern reproductions are sometimes displayed in homes or elsewhere.  For many centuries, Roman Catholics and Orthodox Christians have prayed to the Blessed Virgin Mary for intercession on their behalf to Jesus Christ.  On the current feast of Roman Catholic calendar of saints Our Lady of Perpetual Help is commemorated on June 27.
