Hello !
My name is Hans de Ruijter, age 59, living in the netherlands
I became a member of this forum because i'm interested in Bohol and his people.
Since 2003 i'm married with a beautifull lady from Bohol.
When my working days are over i'm planning to sattle down in Bohol.

there are serious threads here, too, hans, as you may eventually find out, though the humorous parts have their own nuances, or underpinnings if you may, of something more serious, as you may also eventually find out. we even have terrible quarrels over opinions here, but like brothers and sisters, we move on by depersonalizing those quarrels. a strike against an opinion is not necessarily a strike against the opinion maker, so to speak.

need i say more, hans? so step into our parlor and be one with us in this rough and tumble world!

Maayo kay perte diay mo binisaya nis Hans. Pasensya na Hans nga nagpasiaw ko. I guess you can call TB a comedy center too. Left and right pa man gani (LoL). I guess this place is not for the faint of heart, but a good retreat for those who need a good dose of medicine that is laughter.

Hansi, there are lots of Bol-anons married to Nederlander like Aleth from Maribojoc and Rodelyn from San Isidro, so take a look;

Here we are, Jeroen, Rodelyn, Joshua, and Raphael, taken in front of the Van Sandenburg castle in Langbroek, The Netherlands, a couple of years ago. Jeroen Hellingman is Dutch, and was born in the medium sized town of Vianen, very close to the center of the Netherlands; Rodelyn Gallo is Filipina, grew up in Cabanungan, San Isidro, Bohol, and although she was born in Davao del Norte is a genuine Boholano. it's nice to know then that there's no harm done. something must have been lost in translation. but i hold hopes. what may have been lost in translation could be found again in the retelling, especially when the translator is a sport. by the way, this is exciting. a boholano sense of humor paired with a dutch one sounds like an ideal parallel universe.

admittedly, i'm not much of an authority, but i believed it when someone told me back in the late 1990s that among all europeans, the dutch are known for their great sense of humor. and that's aside from being deemed as the tallest human beings on the average.

i have a college chum who's married to a dutch. they've settled in amsterdam and i was lucky to visit with her more than once. my sorties in the netherlands were enjoyable many times over because, and here i hope to be forgiven---those dutch we encountered along the way were a lot friendlier than those locals in venice! once, my husband posed beside a statue (below), following its pose and facial expression because, by jove, he (my husband) also wore an almost similar hat. those dutch at a nearby outdoor cafe clapped and cheered him on!

no, i didn't pose myself. at that time, i strangely lost my own boholano sense of humor by not wanting those dutch guys to laugh and cheer me on as they did to my husband. i don't know why, but i regret it now.

what i noticed then was that my friend's husband was such a talker and joker, with statements like "i'm the only one who's not blond in our family. my mother said that it's because i was given to her by the milkman," and some other similar self-deprecating jokes.

he also revealed that the dutch make jokes of the belgians, not unlike how tagalogs look at bisayas or, for that matter, how cebuanos look at boholanos. (how universal then is this human tendency!)

the dutch are one of the more liberal people on earth, and this needs no telling. so please don't blame me if the least of my expectations is that your husband is a regular dutch guy, full of joie de vivre with an acute sense of humor. and since you're a boholana, you may not be that much different then, for aren't we boholanos known for our own joie de vivre and sense of humor?

as for the netherlands, well, where else in the world can one find these statues? (and this is aside from the the anne frank museum and van gogh museum.) some fine dutch sense of humor here!

i swear nga layo pa mi dinhi sa second childhood. kun nagkaway buot man, tungod ra na tingali kay we have stopped taking ourselves seriously aron malayo ta sa ulcer ug migraine.

mao niy dugang nga mga apan man god if we take ourselves seriously:

1. di modako ang atong kuwarta sa bangko, kana kun naay kuwarta sa bangko
2. akong nawong mao ra gihapon
3. ang nawong sa akong bana mao ra gihapon (maayo gani kay guwapo)
4. ang ngalan sa atong mga bana mao ra gihapon
5. we get insecure and lose our sense of humor

the upside, of course, is that we gain more equanimity as we age. i wouldn't exchange what i am now for the insecurity of my youth.
