PCG INSTALLS 5 BUOYS CARRYING FLAG IN THE WPS

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) successfully installed five 30-FOOT-LONG NAVIGATIONAL BUOYS CARRYING THE PHILIPPINE FLAG in four critical islands in the West Philippine Sea (WPS) – Lawak Island, Likas Island, Parola Island, and Pag-asa Island.

Today, 18 May 2022, PCG Commandant, CG Admiral Artemio M Abu led the arrival ceremony for the five Coast Guard vessels that laid out the SYMBOLS OF COASTAL STATE ADMINISTRATION in the said vicinity waters from 12 to 14 May 2022.

These included BRP Corregidor (AE-891), BRP Bojeador (AE-46), BRP Suluan (MRRV-4406), BRP Capones (MRRV-4407), and Tug Boat Habagat (TB-271).

"I know it was not an easy task, but the support of Task Force Kaligtasan sa Karagatan headed by CG Rear Admiral Joseph Coyme, Coast Guard Fleet Commander, CG Rear Admiral Charlie Rances, and PCG District Palawan Commander, CG Commodore Rommel Supangan as Ground Commander led to the resounding success of installing our sovereign markers that are now flashing lights at night to guide sailors as they traverse the treacherous waters of the WPS," CG Admiral Abu said.

According to the Coast Guard Commandant, these ocean markers also communicate that the said vicinity waters are considered special protected zones. Hence, mining and oil exploration are prohibited to preserve their rich natural resources.

"These buoys are now our source of pride and honor in serving our great nation. And because our fellow Coast Guardians braved numerous dangers during the said noble mission, they were able to bring the PCG to the next level of success," CG Admiral Abu expressed.

Moreover, the Coast Guard Commandant shared his observations during his visit to Pag-asa Island on 14 May 2022 to assess the buoy laying operations and check the morale of PCG personnel deployed on the island.

"During my visit to Pag-asa Island, I saw five PCG ships anchored in the vicinity with several Filipino fishing bancas. Several Vietnamese fishing boats, Chinese fishing vessels, and China Coast Guard vessels were not so far from their position, specifically at the vicinity waters off Subi Reef," CG Admiral Abu furthered.

"Ang guidance ko sa kanila, tayo ang mang-challenge sa kanila. Pero ayon sa Coast Guard Fleet, mapayapa ang WPS at nagpakita ng respeto ang mga barko ng Vietnam at China sa isinagawa nating misyon," he added.

According to CG Admiral Abu, the PCG will place more navigational buoys in other parts of the country's exclusive economic zone (EEZ), especially in the WPS and Benham Rise.

The five newly-installed buoys were part of the 10 floating markers procured in Spain.

These buoys, which arrived in Cebu from Valencia, Spain, on 07 May 2022, are equipped with modern marine aids to navigation lanterns and specialized mooring systems. They also have a remote monitoring system that uses satellite technology to transmit data to the PCG National Headquarters in Port Area, Manila.

On May 17, 1897, Spanish Governor General Fernando Primo de Rivera issued an amnesty for Filipino revolutionaries, this after the Spanish offensive composed of four brigades have been successful in taking various Cavite towns, including Indang, Naic, Amadeo, Mendez Nuñez, Alfonso, and Maragondon.

While some have taken advantage of the pardon, as with the past amnesties issued such as that done by predecessor Camilo de Polavieja, those who did not surrender went with Emilio Aguinaldo in his transfer of operations to Talisay, Batangas. The fall of Cavite did not dampen the revolutionary spirit as the Spanish hoped it would, with Aguinaldo and his troops breaking through the Spanish military cordon and threatened to spread the Revolution further north.

Moving on through Muntinlupa, Pasig, and eventually settling in Montalban (now part of Rizal Province) by June, Aguinaldo reorganized his ranks and assigned flag ranks to a number of officers who still fight, including Generals Mamerto Natividad, Mariano Llanera, Licerio Geronimo, Hermogenes Bautista, Simon Tecson, Isidoro Torres, and Francisco Macabulos, among others.

When Aguinaldo reached Biak-na-Bato in Bulacan, and observing the pause in Primo de Rivera's offensive, he issued in July 1897 a proclamation outlining the demands of the "second inauguration" of the Revolution, which he carried on when negotiations with the Spanish began later through Pedro Paterno:

1. Expulsion of the friars and restitution to the townships of the lands which the friars have appropriated.

2. Parliamentary representation, freedom of the press, toleration of all religious sects, laws common with Spain, and administrative and economic autonomy.

3. Equality in treatment and pay between peninsular and insular civil servants.

4. Putting up to public auction in small lots the friar lands restituted of values within the reach of all and payable within four years, the same with present State lands.

5. Abolition of government power to banish citizens, as well as unjust measures against Filipinos, legal equality for all persons under the civil, as well as the Penal Code.

Apparently, these demands found their way to the provinces far from the center of conflict. For instance, Elias Ataviado in Albay wrote of how "the Pact [of Biak-na-Bato] was unwittingly Aguinaldo's strongest weapon of victory" for in their demands, they spoke for the rights of all Filipinos, regardless of ethnicity. Ataviado noted how the initial impression of the Philippine Revolution in Bicol was the "desire of the Tagalogs to rule the other regions." Aguinaldo's stand, however, showed that they sought racial equality for "the Filipino, the Asian, the American, and the European."

What can be learned from the peace process leading to the Pact of Biak-na-Bato?

'BILANG PILIPINO, NAKAKAHIYA'
Atty. Vic Rodriguez, the spokesperson of presumptive president Bongbong Marcos Jr., lamented the protests organized by Filipino communities in Australia, stressing that it is not "Filipino culture" to humiliate fellow Filipino outside the Philippines.

Rodriguez also said it is the discretion of the Australian government whether the visit of Marcos Jr. to the country is acceptable or not.

"Bilang Pilipino, nakakahiya. Hindi ugali ng Pilipino na hiyain at pahiyain ang kapwa niya Pilipino sa isang bansa na hindi naman Pilipinas," Rogriguez said during a press conference on Tuesday.

"I think the best authority or person to say whether he is welcome or not is the Australian government — not fellow Filipinos na nandoon lang din, punong-puno ng poot at pait ang puso," he added.

On May 16, 1899, the Battle of San Isidro in Nueva Ecija began when American forces under General Henry Ware Lawton advanced from Baliuag, Bulacan. To recon the area, Lawton sent Young's Scouts under Lieutenant James E. Thornton, who replaced the commander with whom the unit was named after (William H. Young) when the latter died due to a knee injury. Eventually, Thornton's unit found some 100 Filipino troops, who burned the bridge leading to San Isidro.

In an attempt to save their only path across, Thornton and 22 of the scouts rushed through the burning bridge and put out the flames in the midst of Filipino fire. The Americans took control of the bridge, but the main force was yet to arrive. Lawton sent a provisional brigade composed of the 22nd Infantry, 13th Minnesota Infantry, 2nd Oregon Infantry, Scott's Battery, a light artillery detachment from the Utah Battery, and a battalion from the North Dakota Infantry to advance on May 17.

Facing them were around 2,000 Filipino soldiers, which offered token resistance. The Americans reported 3 casualties, while they put the casualty count for the Filipino side to at least 13, with one Filipino captured. Unknown to the Americans, President Emilio Aguinaldo had earlier transferred his temporary capital from San Isidro to Cabanatuan, and later to Bamban in Tarlac. He was followed there by General Antonio Luna and some 3,000 troops, which means Lawton had failed once more to catch up with the Filipino main force. Despite Lawton's desire to move on from Baliuag (where he permitted local elections to be held under US auspices) as early as May 12, the logistical reality was that his commander General Elwell Otis could not reinforce Lawton any time soon, and Lawton's troops were suffering from thinning of supply lines and spread of disease. It was not aided by Lawton blaming Otis for ordering him to rest, which his forces apparently needed.

For their action at San Isidro, 13 of Young's Scouts received the Medal of Honor.

The following day, May 18, a Filipino peace commission composed of Gracio Gonzaga, Alberto Barretto, Captain Lorenzo Zialcita, and General Gregorio del Pilar arrived in San Isidro to negotiate a ceasefire with the Americans. This peace commission eventually found its way to Manila, where they met with Otis, but failed to produce the intended results. To recall, Luna urged Aguinaldo after the Battle of Calumpit to discuss an armistice, but the Americans believed that the Filipinos were only trying to have breathing space to continue the war. Communist Terrorist Group personalities respond to government's call

Camp Navarro, Calarian, Zamboanga City – May 17, 2022

Four communist terrorist group (CTG) personalities laid down their arms and returned to the folds of the law on May 14 and 15, 2022.

Western Mindanao Command Chief Lt. Gen. Alfredo Rosario, Jr. said that the former rebels yielded following the series of civil-military operations conducted by combined elements of the 53rd, 44th, and 42nd Infantry Battalions. Based on the report from the ground, the surrendered personalities submitted themselves to the military at Sitio Tagaytay, Barangay Tiogan, Leon B. Postigo, Zamboanga del Norte.

Brig. Gen. Leonel Nicolas, Commander of the 102nd Infantry Brigade said that the former rebels were former officers and members of the defunct guerilla fronts of the Western Mindanao Regional Party Committee. During the debriefing, the surrendered personalities revealed that they experienced hardships and hunger while evading the operating forces in the area.

Maj. Gen. Generoso Ponio, Commander of Joint Task Force ZamPeLan commended the soldiers and intelligence operatives who exerted much effort on our campaign against terrorism and insurgency in the Zamboanga Peninsula and Lanao Provinces.

Meanwhile, Lt. Gen. Rosario, Jr. said, "We continue to call on those who wish to abandon their armed struggle,  because the government's integration program awaits you. There is no greater satisfaction than  to live peacefully and happily with your families and loved ones".

Statistics disclosed that for the first quarter of 2022, a total of 62 CTG personalities surrendered to the government forces in the western and central parts of Mindanao.

Fashion Trend / David Choe Famous Facebook Murals
May 17, 2022, 11:24:01 AM
David Choe, the artist who painted the Facebook Incorporation building in 2005, was not paid in cash.

Sean Parker, president of Facebook at the time, asked Choe to paint his famous murals on the office walls for $60,000 or company stock.

Choe chose the stock, and when Facebook, started by Mark Zuckerberg in his Harvard dorm room, announced its IPO this month, or initial public offerings of stock, to raise $5 billion, Choe made an estimated $200 million.

The murals are still in the Facebook offices today.

Philippine History / First Filipina Comfort Woman
May 17, 2022, 06:29:05 AM
The first Filipino comfort woman to come out with her story was Lola Rosa, in 1992.

Maria Rosa Luna Henson or Lola Rosa, as she is fondly called by her family, was only 14 years old when she was riding in a cart pulled by a water buffalo and stopped at a Japanese army checkpoint in the city of Angeles. She was kept in a hospital used as a barracks by the Japanese army, where she was raped repeatedly by Japanese soldiers (sometimes 12 and even up to 30 men in one day) everyday.

In September 1992, a press conference was organized and Lola Rosa's public testimony was in the headlines of newspapers and television news worldwide, including the Japanese media. After her testimony, she wrote a book about her experiences from the Japanese war. Other Filipino comfort women came out of hiding and followed suit. Lola Rosa has since passed.

#OnThisDay May 16, 1571, Spanish conquistador Miguel López de Legazpi (born c. 1502) landed in Manila and took possession of the kingdom. He was the first Governor-General of the Philippines, he was also known as El Adelantado (The Conqueror) and El Viejo (The Elder).

With a fleet of four ships and 380 men, Legazpi left Navidad, Mexico, on November 21, 1564. Sailing westward across the Pacific, he stopped at Guam, where he obtained fresh water and supplies. Continuing his voyage, he anchored near the island of Cebu on February 13, 1565. Unable to land at this island due to Cebuano hostility, he sailed to the neighboring islands. At Samar, he was welcomed by a friendly chief, Urrao, with whom he made a blood compact on February 22, 1565. On March 9, 1565, he landed at Limasawa, whose young king named Bankaw hospitably received him. Later, Legazpi landed at Bohol and befriended two native kings, Katuna (Sikatuna) and Gala (Sigala). On March 25, 1565, Legazpi and Katuna made a blood compact. A few days later, a similar pact was done by Legazpi and Gala.

From Bohol, Legazpi sailed to Cebu, arriving there on April 27, 1565. King Tupas of Cebu defied the Spaniards. Under cover of artillery fire, a Spanish assault force hit the shore and grappled furiously with the Cebuano defenders. Spanish artillery and muskets won the day. Tupas with his men retreated to the hills, leaving his kingdom in flames.

The next day, April 28, 1565, one of Legazpi's men, named Juan de Camus, discovered the image of the Holy Child Jesus in an unburned Cebuano house. This was the image given by Magellan in 1521 to the Christian queen of Cebu. Legazpi regarded the discovery as a good omen. On receiving the image, he knelt on the ground, reverently kissed it, and raised it to heaven and prayed.

A Spanish settlement, the first of its kind in the Philippines, was established. A church for the Augustinian fathers was erected, and in this church was kept the historic image of the Child Jesus. Buildings were constructed for the soldiers, wells were dug to assure constant supply of water.

Affectionately, Legazpi named the settlement the "City of the Most Holy Name of Jesus" in honor of the sacred image. Thus, Cebu City, which Legazpi founded in 1565, is the oldest city in the Philippines. More of a statesman than a conquistador, Legazpi tried to win the Cebuano king and people by a policy of attraction. He invited them to return and rebuild their homes and live in peace with the Spaniards. With the help of Cid Hamal (Sidamit), a Muslim Malay who was in Cebu at that time, Legazpi succeeded in winning the friendship of Raha Tupas and lesser datus.

As Legazpi was laying down the foundation of Spanish rule in Cebu, the Augustinian missionaries were busy sowing the seeds of Christianity. On March 21, 1568, King Tupas accepted baptism with Legazpi as godfather. He was named Felipe in honor of Philip II. His son, Pinsuncan, Cebu's crown prince, was likewise baptized and was named Carlos, with Captain Felipe de Salcedo (grandson of Miguel López de Legazpi and brother of Juan de Salcedo) as godfather. Following the example of their king and prince, the Cebuanos accepted Christianity.

Owing to the shortage of food in Cebu, Legazpi moved to Panay in 1569. On the bank of the Panay River, he founded the second Spanish settlement in the Philippines. This settlement is now the town of Panay in Capiz Province.

At the beginning, the Panay Filipinos were hostile. But, owing to the apostolic labors of Fr. Juan de Alba and other Augustinian missionaries, they were pacified and became friendly to Legazpi. Two chiefs of Panay, Datus Macabaog and Madidong, were converted to Christianity by the Augustinian missionaries and became good friends of Legazpi. With Cebu and Panay as bases, the conquistadores and missionaries, working side by side, successfully extended Spanish rule and Christianity to other islands.

On May 8, 1570, a Spanish expedition to Manila left Panay under the command of Marshal Martin de Goiti. At that time, Manila was a Muslim kingdom under Raha Sulayman. It was a civilized outpost of Islam. Sulayman, refusing to submit to Spanish vassalage, defended his kingdom from the Spanish invaders. On May 24, 1570, Goiti and his men captured Maynilad (Manila's originally name, derived from that of the nilad plant) after a hard fight. Sulayman and his warriors retreated across the river, leaving their kingdom in flames – this was the first conquest of Manila.

After his victory, Goiti left Maynilad and returned to Panay. He told Legazpi of the existence of the Muslim kingdom by the shore of Manila Bay, which was called Maynilad. It was a rich kingdom because of its trade with the Chinese, Borneans, Siamese and other foreign merchants.

Fascinated by Goiti's tale, Legazpi decided to colonize Maynilad. The next year, he gathered a stronger expedition consisting of 27 vessels, 280 Spaniards and 600 Visayan allies. He left Panay and reached Manila Bay in the middle of May, 1571.

The second conquest of Manila was a bloodless event. Lakan Dula, last king of Tondo and Sulayman's uncle, realized that it was useless to resist the powerful Spaniards. He paddled out to Manila Bay and welcomed Legazpi. He also persuaded his valiant nephew, Raha Sulayman, and Raha Matanda (Sulayman's uncle) to submit peacefully to Legazpi. Thus, Legazpi landed at Manila without a fight.

On June 24, 1571, the Feast Day of St. John the Baptist, Legazpi proclaimed Manila as capital of the Philippines and established its city government. Over the ashes of Raha Sulayman's Muslim kingdom, Legazpi built the Spanish city of Manila. Years later, King Philip II, by his Royal Decree of June 1, 1574, named Manila the Insigne y Siempre Leal Ciudad (Distinguished and Ever Loyal City). Later, by his Royal Decree of March 20, 1596, the same king conferred a beautiful coat-of-arms on Manila. On August 20, 1572, Legazpi, the first Spaniard governor general and adelantado of the Philippines, died of heart attack in Manila, Guido de Lavezaris succeeded Legazpi in 1572 as governor general.

Miguel López de Legazpi's greatest career was his successful colonization of the Philippines, and established Spain's dominion over the Philippines that lasted for 333 years.

Enero 1  KALAN-ON SA TIBUOK TUIG
BASAHA: Jeremias 15:15-21

Gipatalinghogan ko ang tanang gisulti mo kanako. . . imo ako, busa ang imong pulong makahatag kanakog kalipay.   -Jeremias 15:16

-DCM

Biblia ko, sa matag adlaw basahon,
Ug pamalandongan sa kagabhion;
Molipay kanako sa walay puas,
Gimanggad ko sa tanang panahon. -Watts

McDonald's is ending operations in Russia and will be selling all of its approx 850 locations there to a local buyer. The decision to end 32 years of business in the country comes after McDonald's temporarily closed its Russian restaurants in March 2022, which was due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The company's CEO Chris Kempczinski reportedly wrote a message to employees, suppliers, and franchises, explaining that they can't ignore the 'humanitarian crisis' going on.

'This is a complicated issue that's without precedent and with profound consequences,' Kempczinski said. 'But it is impossible to ignore the humanitarian crisis caused by the war in Ukraine. And it is impossible to imagine the Golden Arches representing the same hope and promise that led us to enter the Russian market 32 years ago.'

McDonald's is considered an iconic brand in Russia and a symbol of post-Cold War capitalism in its borders. Paul Musgrave, an assistant political science professor at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, said, 'When McDonald's moved into the Soviet Union, it was part of a message of opening up and building trust and cooperation between Russia and the West. And now those avenues have all been closed off ... And we're kind of standing in, symbolically at least, a new era of division between Russia and much of the rest of the world.'

Philippine Education / Grand Old Man of Cebu
May 16, 2022, 04:09:36 PM
I AM A CEBUA-know: DID YOU KNOW that the "Grand Old Man of Cebu"—DON SERGIO SUICO OSMEÑA , SR.—is the FIRST Department of Education (then Department of Public Instruction) Secretary?

He was appointed by President Manuel L. Quezon on November 15, 1935 and served until April 18, 1939. Secretary Jorge Bocobo succeeded him, and led the department from April 19, 1939 up to January 22, 1941.

Don Sergio came back with the office renamed as the "Public Instruction, Health, and Public Welfare" from December 24, 1941 until August 1, 1944 when he became the nation's 4TH PRESIDENT. This made him the FIRST DepEd Secretary to serve the office TWICE!

General Carlos P. Romulo was appointed as secretary of the department renamed as the "Public Instruction and Information" from October 1944 to February 1945. (courtesy on dates: my friend, the late Atty. Clarence Paul Oaminal)

Topping 2nd in the 1903 Bar Exams, he is also the ONLY DepEd Secretary who became a PHILIPPINE PRESIDENT. The next DepEd Secretary is still from Cebu—Davao City Mayor and presumptive Vice President-elect, Inday Sara Duterte-Carpio.

Will we have another DepEd Secretary-turned-president? If yes, then still proudly from Cebu!

On May 12, 1888, while the Sulu Sultanate was in the midst of civil war, the British government entered an agreement with the British North Borneo Company to make North Borneo a "protected independent state." The said agreement also provided that "no cession or other alienation of any part of the territory of the State of North Borneo shall be made by its Government to any foreign state."

Earlier in 1885, the Madrid Protocol was signed by representatives of Spain, Great Britain, and Germany, deciding on the issue of the Sultanate of Sulu. As a result of their negotiations, the Spanish government renounced "all claims of sovereignty" over Borneo, particularly Sabah, including the islands of Balambangan, Banguey, and Malawili. Freedom of commerce and navigation was also established in the area. In exchange, the British and the Germans recognized Spanish sovereignty over Sulu.

While the 1851 treaty between the Spanish and the Sultanate of Sulu established the sovereignty of Spain over Sulu, mandated that Sulu raise the Spanish flag, and provided for the integration of the sultanate in the Philippines (the Spanish governor of Sulu assumed office thereafter), the 1878 treaty signed after years of warfare between Spain and Sulu Sultan Jamal ul-Azam went further by detailing which lands would be effectively occupied by the Spanish and which would be retained by the Sultan. Annual compensation was also provided for the Sultan and his officials "for the losses they incurred" during the conflict. These two treaties posed an issue on the international status of Sulu, and were taken into consideration in the protocol.

For one, Britain did not recognize Spanish sovereignty over Sulu, as did any other European nation at the time. They earlier made an agreement of "permanent lease" (pajak) with the sultan in 1878, and if Sulu loses its sovereignty over Borneo, so would the agreement be put into serious question. However, when the British established their North Borneo Company by 1881, and the British realized the military victory of Spain over the Sultan of Sulu, they soon expressed interest to discuss with Spain provided they will "renounce" all claims over Sulu's Borneo territories. Germany, which ships also went to Sulu, followed suit. British and German recognition of their sovereignty over Sulu was decided regardless of actual Spanish occupation status within the sultanate.

Notably, neither the Sultan nor any of his datus were party to the negotiations. In the long term, Spain honored this protocol. When the 1898 Treaty of Paris was concluded, the territory of the Philippines ceded to the United States stopped at Sibutu Island, with no inch of North Borneo territory included. This was reinforced by the subsequent Treaty of Washington. The issue over sovereignty, however, did not cease.

In 2022, an arbitration ruled by Dr. Gonzalo Stampa in Paris, France stated that Malaysia should pay the heirs of the Sulu sultan some USD 14.9 billion by virtue of the 1878 agreement with the British. It was lower than the initial claim of over USD 32.2 billion, which included estimates from oil income in the region, but it was nonetheless viewed as a legal victory within the sultanate. Malaysia reportedly stopped its "annual payment" of RM 5,300 after the 2013 Lahad Datu standoff, a payment supposedly seen as "cession money."

The Malaysian government, however, have publicly stated that they reject the decision. They added that Malaysia was not part of the proceedings. The decision supposedly violates their sovereign immunity, arguing that the 1878 agreement did not contain any provision regarding arbitration, and should therefore be decided in a Malaysian court, following a 2020 ruling by the High Court of Sabah and Sarawak.

Malaysia's bid in the Spanish High Court of Justice at Madrid to recognize the local decision which argued against the arbitration court's jurisdiction is pending to this day. Learn more about the history of Sulu and Mindanao: https://history-ph.blogspot.com/2017/06/paduka-batara.html

5IB mediates in Lumbatan local election

Army operating troops of the 5th Infantry "Duty Bound" Battalion arbitrated between the registered voters and electoral board in Lumbatan, Lanao Del Sur on May 10, 2022.

Some supporters refused to surrender the vote-counting machines (VCMs) and election materials, making it difficult to be transported to Marawi City for official counting. Upon hearing random gunshots around the area, the local Commission on Elections (COMELEC) office requested for assistance to retrieve the VCMs and transfer it to the provincial capitol. The 5IB, along with the 12th Civil Military Operations (CMO) "Kapatiran" Battalion, immediately responded to the voting area for reinforcement and transmission of the ballots.

Army Commanding General Lt. Gen. Romeo S. Brawner, Jr., lauded the 5IB and 12th CMO Battalion in remaining true to their call of duty to serve the people and secure the elections in their area of responsibility. Lt. Gen. Brawner further reiterated that the government troops continue to protect the polls especially during emergency situations.

On This Day - May 12, 1962, an old and frail General Douglas MacArthur gave his famous "Duty, Honor, Country" speech to graduating West Point cadets. Born on January 26, 1880, at a U.S. Army base in Little Rock, Arkansas, Douglas MacArthur seemed destined for military greatness from an early age. When he was young, MacArthur attended the West Texas Military Academy, from which he graduated as class Valedictorian. Later he went to the American Military Academy at West Point, from which he also graduated first in his class. Following his time at West Point, MacArthur embarked on what was a truly epic military career. He rose to prominence early when in 1914, during the American occupation of Veracruz, Mexico, he was nominated for the Medal of Honor for his actions during a daring reconnaissance mission.

From that point on, it was a fast rise for MacArthur. He achieved the rank of Brigadier General during World War I, served as Superintendent of West Point in 1919, and later became Chief of Staff of the United States Army. By the time of World War II, MacArthur was called out of retirement to serve as overall American commander in the Far East, a theater in which he did battle with the Japanese for more than three years before accepting their surrender in 1945. In the following years, MacArthur administered the occupation of Japan, during which he instituted many sweeping political and economic changes that gave Japan the strength to get back on its feet after the war.

In 1950, MacArthur was called away from duty in Japan to serve as overall American commander in the Korean War, during which his aggressive policies were able to push back the North Koreans and regain almost the entire Korean peninsula. However, it was these same policies that proved to be his downfall. Disregarding the President's wishes, MacArthur pushed too close to Communist China, which in turn launched a massive attack on the United Nations troops in Korea. The U.S. and its allies were pushed back to the border of North and South Korea, where the war turned into a deadly stalemate.

After this disaster, the aging Douglas MacArthur was removed from command by President Harry Truman. In his later life, MacArthur returned to the United States, and in 1962 he was honored by West Point with the Sylvanus Thayer Award for outstanding service to the nation. After accepting the award, he gave a speech to the graduating cadets of the beloved school from which he too had graduated. The most famous part of the speech was this:
"The shadows are lengthening for me. The twilight is here. My days of old have vanished, tone and tint. They have gone glimmering through the dreams of things that were. Their memory is one of wondrous beauty, watered by tears, and coaxed and caressed by the smiles of yesterday. I listen vainly, but with thirsty ears, for the witching melody of faint bugles blowing reveille, of far drums beating the long roll. In my dreams I hear again the crash of guns, the rattle of musketry, the strange, mournful mutter of the battlefield. But in the evening of my memory, always I come back to West Point. Always there echoes and reechoes: Duty, Honor, Country. Today marks my final roll call with you, but I want you to know that when I cross the river my last conscious thoughts will be of The Corps, The Corps, and The Corps. I bid you farewell."

AN OPEN LETTER TO THE Ateneo de Manila University ...

My son is a Homegrown Atenean ... from prep and currently a senior in your university.  I have witnessed how you, through your curriculum, teachers, and school extra curriculars, actively inculcate in your students the values of truth, justice, and honor.  As a Catholic institution, the paramount principles imbedded into young minds should be that of generosity, humility, and love ... the very traits Christ taught through his actions.

I am an Ateneo parent who has been vocal about my beliefs and have been "cancelled" so many times especially by your community. But this election season has revealed an even more extreme persona that seems to have taken root in your students.  I have coparents reaching out to me and expressing grief and concern how their children are behaving differently and against them.  One has even left home to be with her likeminded peers to heal the grief over the defeat of your candidate ... Mind you these are not only coming from Uniteam parents supporters but also from Pink parents supporters as well.

The very educational institution that has professed the values of faith, hope, and love, has represented the opposite.  Instead of encouraging students to seek the truth wherever it may lead, you have imposed your own version of the "truth" on them.  Instead of creating an atmosphere of love, you have stoked the flames of hatred towards a perceived "enemy".  Instead of preaching kindness, you choose to inspire an intolerance for others' beliefs and choices.  Instead of celebrating the joy of academic discovery, you have created a culture of holier-than-thou" mindset amongst your flock isolating those who sees differently.  Instead of standing up for the weak and downtrodden, you have remained quiet as your "flock" turns on those with differing views.

Your partisan stance has encouraged young impressionable minds to blindly take up your "cause" against the "enemy". History has many instances that the youth are the easiest to be molded into a terrifying mob.  And it is apparent what you ... along with other Catholic institutions ... are building. This road will not lead to heaven.

I am blessed that my children are mentally and emotionally strong, able to withstand their peers' online harassment , derision, and bullying ... and come out with joyous resolve to stand by their own decisions.  My concern lies with those children who are more vulnerable than them.

A Concerned Mother

The decade-long delayed Metro Manila Subway Project (MMSP) is FINALLY TURNING INTO REALITY!

Megawide and its Japanese partners signed Contract Package 104 of the MMSP — covering the construction of underground stations in Ortigas North and South and the tunnels connecting them. The contract has an aggregate estimated value of P17.75 billion.

76 percent of the whole MSSP, a large-scale undertaking that needs a substantial budget, will be funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) via a P370.8-billion loan package. The remaining 24 percent will be covered by the government.

JICA, the world's biggest bilateral donor agency, has been supporting the Philippines through its Official Development Assistance (ODA) Loans.

Dear Mr. President,

It was around this time 6 years ago when I got a personal call from you asking me if I wanted to join you in rebuilding our country that, at that time, was ravaged by incompetent powerful fools who cared nothing for the Filipino people and caused us untold harm and grief.

I am no longer the same person I was when I first joined you in rebuilding our country.

My heart has been split open by the sufferings of our people. Some days I doubt if my heart will ever mend.

And yet I must thank you.

You have taken me to places inside myself that I never knew existed until you took me there.

You have taught me how it is to truly love our country. I have only needed to look at you to know.

Wake up, lay your life down for the people. Serve them. Make their lives better. Heal them. Fight for them. Defend them. Protect them. Go to bed. Wake up. Do the same thing over and over.

And if anything confused me, all I've ever had to do was look at you.

This, you seemed to say, is how to love the Filipino people. With your life—nothing less. Go out there—right to the edge of the cliff—and JUMP!

And so it was easy for me to stare down a member of the European Parliament and tell him to his face that the Philippines, my beloved country is a sovereign nation and that he had no right to make demands on us nor to interfere in matters that are no concern of his.

And it has been easy --oh so easy—to unsheath my sword and cut off the heads of the Hydra-the terrorist CPP NPA NDF— that had devoured our children whole and caused our mothers to cry endless tears of grief at the loss of their children.

The bashings that I got in CPP-fueled social and mainstream media that were meant to cow me into silence (haha idiots) were meryenda I ate with relish while cackling like a witch. Pasikat ko sayo, Sir.  See, I would mental-telepathy  to you, I am fearless like you and like you, all these mean a grand total of nothing to me. And like you again, all that mattered was to get the job done well.

I have met kings and queens and feasted with royalty in palaces because of you. And I have climbed mountains and crossed rivers and embraced the poorest of the poor among us and wiped their tears away.

I have sat across negotiation tables where I got to make lives better and where the CPP got decimated even more. And you have given me the power to cut down to size terrorists who preyed on our people.

Thank you.
Thank you.
Thank you.

The honor of my life is to have served my country under the best president this country has ever had so far. This adventure you've given me will be hard to top.

Mahal na mahal kita, Sir. Alam mo yan. Alam ng PSG yan. Naka alert sila pag nandyan na ako because they know I will hug and kiss you. LOL. So when they try to dakma me, I look at you and you rescue me and tell them to let me hug and kiss you. Perks of my job. lol.

We have a little over a month more and we are winding down.

A new President has been elected by an amazing landslide in credible and clean elections under your watch and we will be waltzing out of Malacañan in a few breaths.

The grandeur of our democracy enshrined in a peaceful transfer of power is happening. This is one of your last tasks. And I will be with you till the end, Sir, assisting you in however way you will need me.

Combined elements from the Philippine Army's 61st Infantry Battalion (61IB) of the 3rd Infantry Division and the Iloilo Provincial Intelligence Unit in coordination with the Leon Municipal Police Station nabbed a CPP-NPA Terrorist (CNT) leader and his wife at Sitio Hinubongan, Barangay Jamog-Gines, Leon, Iloilo on May 9, 2022.

The arrested CNT couple leaders were identified as Ricky Tumabiao and Victoria Tumabiao.  Wherein, Ricky Tumabiao was at large facing a search warrant for violating R.A. 10591 or the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Act. The government troops captured from the couple's house an M2 carbine, an improvised shotgun, an anti-personnel mine, a magazine for shotgun, fourteen rounds of live carbine ammunition, three rounds of shotgun ammunition, and propaganda materials.

Philippine Army conducts air medevac demo at PMA

The Philippine Army conducted an aerial medical evacuation (medevac) capability demonstration at the Philippine Military Academy (PMA), Fort Gregorio del Pilar, Baguio City on May 12, 2022.

The Army's critical care aeromedical team, composed of military doctors, nurses, pilots and their crew, conducted the simulated medevac for a blast victim at the PMA's Borromeo Field. The simulation which capped the Army's capability show is part of the line-up of activities to mark the graduation of PMA "Bagsik Diwa" Class of 2022. It is geared at encouraging 4th Class Cadets to join the country's land force.

The Army is developing its aerial medical capability because it is the fastest way to transport a combat casualty from the injury site to the nearest hospital, according to Army Commanding General Lt. Gen. Romeo S.  Brawner, Jr.

"We are developing the Army's casualty evacuation because the life of each soldier counts. Even if we save only one life through this capability, it is already worth it," Commanding General, Philippine Army (CGPA) Lt. Gen. Romeo S. Brawner, Jr., said in his remarks during the launch of the Army's first air ambulance on March 2022.

The Army Chief said that the command is eyeing the deployment of three air ambulances within the near-term.

Philippine Army showcases capabilities at PMA

The Philippine Army showcased its capabilities in a spectrum of military operations in a demonstration at the Philippine Military Academy (PMA), Fort Gregorio del Pilar, Baguio City on May 12, 2022.

The event, which is part of the week-long line-up of activities to mark the graduation of PMA "Bagsik Diwa" Class of 2022, showcased the Philippine Army as a respectable world-class ground force. It is also geared at encouraging members of the cadet corps to join the organization.

The demonstration started with the improvised explosive device (IED) search and neutralization by K-9 and Explosive and Ordinance Disposal (EOD) teams followed by a simulated hostage-taking incident and subsequent rescue operations by the Army's elite forces—First Scout Ranger Regiment (FSRR), Special Forces Regiment (Airborne), and Light Reaction Regiment (LRR). The rescue operations showcased the Army's latest unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and cutting-edge Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Information/Intelligence, Surveillance, Targeting Acquisition and Reconnaissance (C4ISTAR) equipment.

The Scout Rangers demonstrated their combat tracking and warfare prowess while Special Forces troopers showcased their skills in High Altitude High Opening (HAHO) operations. Meanwhile, a team of LRR commandos demonstrated their close-combat, sniping and urban warfare capabilities.

A humanitarian assistance and disaster response (HADR) team from the 525th Engineer Combat Battalion also demonstrated collapsed structure search and rescue operations for a victim of a simulated blast. An aerial medical evacuation featuring the Army's first-ever air ambulance capped off the activity at the PMA's Borromeo Field.

Actor and reservist 1st Lt. Ronnie Liang performed his hit song "Sundalo ng Kapayapaan" at the end of the ceremony.

Philippine MEDIA RELEASE
NPA leader kills comrade in Davao De Oro

MAWAB, Davao De Oro – Top ranking New People's Army (NPA) leader Eric Jun Casilao alias "Elian" killed and buried his comrade at Purok 8, Libuton, Barangay Andap, New Bataan, Davao de Oro sometime in April 2022.  (My own add: Eric Casilao is the brother of Ariel Casilao, ANAKPAWIS/KABAG Representative. Christ, what a family. )

Alias "Vina", squad supply officer of Regional Operations Command (ROC) of the Communist Terrorist Group (CTG) who surrendered to the government forces on April 27, revealed that Crispin Rollon alias "Jeffrey", 52 years old, was murdered by their NPA leader because he was considered to be a burden to their movement while they were fleeing from Focused-Military Operations by the 10th Infantry Division, Philippine Army.

"Dahil sa sobrang gutom, nanghina si Jeffrey, hindi na makalakad. Kaya naging pabigat, binugbog nalang siya at sinakal ni Ka Elian hanggang sa mamatay, then nilibing sa may Andap (Because of extreme starvation, Jeffrey was exhausted and could no longer walk. He became a burden to us, that is why he was beaten and choked to death by Elian and buried him in Andap.)," Alias Vina said.

After her revelation, a joint operation was immediately launched by the 66th Infantry Battalion under Lieutenant Colonel Julius M Munar, together with personnel from New Bataan Municipal Police Station and Municipal Disaster Response Team respectively, on May 11, 2022. Consequently, the said operations resulted to the successful exhumation of the cadaver of Rollon.

MGen Nolasco A Mempin, 10ID Commander condemned this savage atrocities of the Communist Terrorist Group. "The barbaric act of NPA leaders is unacceptable. If only they chose to surrender, this would not have happened that they need to kill each other just for them to survive. Once again, we are calling them to lay down their arms, return to their families and live a peaceful and meaningful life ahead." MGen Mempin added.

Casilao is currently the secretary of the CTG's Southern Mindanao Regional Committee and has a wide array of criminal cases ranging from kidnapping and serious illegal detention to several counts of murder. He also has a P5.4-million bounty from the Department of National Defense – Department of Interior and Local Government Joint Order of Reward.

Talk of the Town / By Janua Cunanan
May 12, 2022, 09:10:46 PM
To those students who are planning for an academic walkout, let me tell you again why I ended the same journey 10 years ago.

July 31, 2012, I remember facing a panel of interviewers including Maria Ressa of Rappler asking me why I joined the Left.

I replied, "I wanted to overthrow the government".

It was the final interview for the Search of the Ten Outstanding Students of the Philippines (TOSP) 2012. I remember shaking, feeling so cold, and bursted into tears as I slowly shared to them my story. The same story I will be sharing to you right now.

At 16, the streets were my battleground. Our cry for reform made us victorious. We rally and call out ineffiency, fought for academic freedom, and wanted every single PRESIDENT TO STEP DOWN. We were insatiable. We wanted to change the Philippines overnight. Inshort, we were activists.

I remember Maria Ressa asking, "What made you changed your mind?"

I told them that my course Political Science changed everything on how I viewed the Government and its functions. I learned that we cannot blame the President for all the things that are happening in our country. He might be the structural head but his task is only to implement laws. The congress takes charge of legislation while the judiciary also interprets. It has system of checks and balance that bars the other branch from directly intervening from the other. Inshort, the President is just "part" of the Government. He is not the Government. Simply put, we cannot blame him for everything.

I continued telling Maria Ressa and the panel  of interviewers..

That we cannot change the Government overnight;

That for us to change the system, we have to take part of the system, not just to complain, but also to give our coequal duty as citizens of the country;

That the country needs good citizenship alongside good governance;

That the streets are no longer my battleground but my willingness to initiate change. That my noise does not anymore made me feel victorious but my attitude towards change.

That my share of good citizenship was to join several organizations right after I quit the Left. I helped PDEA in their campaign, "Barkada Kontra Droga", gave seminars to schools and universities on how to use the automated machines used during elections, and taught my fellow students how be vigilant and help achieve honest elections;

That the Government needs help. We cannot help the government by rallying, shouting, or making noises in the streets. Not even our desire to oust the Philippine President would help.

When I received the award few days after as one of the Ten Outstanding Students of the Philippines, I promised to continue help the government by molding the youth—and the best way to do that is to teach. The same youth whom Rizal envisoned as the hope of this Fatherland.

With all that is happening in the country right now, I think we should start with the youth. Tell them that if they wanted to change the Philippines, they need to change themselves first, influence others to do the same, and help the Government.

Your plans on academic walkouts would only bandage the wound instead of healing it. Continue studying, attend your classes, and plan your fuuture. You might become the next leader this country needs. Protest if you can and seek redress if needed. However, do not let the result of the election today shape and determine your future.

Instead, prepare yourself that someday you'll help craft a better Philippines. If not the best, then better than what we have today.

P.S.
I hugged the President that the communists wanted to overthrow. The hug symblizes my attitude towards change. That I'll no longer take part in any overthrowing—but helping.

Let us help this newly installed leaders under the essence of democracy.

We owe this to our country. We do not owe this to anyone. Always remember that.

#OnThisDay May 11, 1956, Boholano lawyer, journalist, educator, businessman, founder and president of PMI Colleges, and father of maritime education, Tomas Arbolente "Admiral" Cloma formally claimed ownership of what he named as "Freedomland," – "a group of islands, islets, atolls, reefs, shoals, fishing grounds and adjacent waters, with a total area of 64,976 square miles" located from 100 to 300 miles west of the island-province of Palawan in western Philippines. The Freedomland is also known as the Kalayaan (Freedom) Islands, a part of the Spratly Islands, situated within the West Philippine Sea.

From 1947 to 1950, Cloma's fishing vessels led by his younger brother, Capt. Filemon Cloma, and his crew fishermen from the Visayas and PMI cadets, were fishing in the seas around northern Palawan. As their catch dwindled, they ventured beyond Palawan where they discovered a vast area that he would later name and claim as Freedomland.

Tomas Cloma became curious about Filemon's reports regarding their new fishing frontier. One day, Tomas set out on an expedition with Filemon and his crew to explore the rich fishing site and the islands in the area. They were thinking of setting up a fish cannery there. Upon returning to Manila, they checked, but could not find the islands on any of the available maps. Tomas surmised that they had discovered a vast uncharted area, possibly as large as if not larger than Luzon. One of the countless islands they saw had abandoned structures with Japanese markings. It might have been a Japanese base in World War II.

Tomas joined another fishing trip and exploration to the discovered sea and islands. This time, he brought a movie camera to record the event. He was in a good, expectant mood, dressed in short pants and a T-shirt. On the way there, he caught a tuna and his companions caught even bigger fish. When they reached the place, their ship ran aground in shallow waters. Later, they were surprised to see more land as the water receded.

Tomas was fascinated by the beauty and vastness of the territory, which he viewed with his binoculars, and the possible richness of the islands and surrounding waters. They could of course have enormous potential if there were oil deposits beneath them, Tomas Cloma speculated. With his companions, Cloma planted a flag and some mohon (concrete markings) to symbolize his claim to and occupation of the area which later he would call "Freedomland," and more formally, "The Free Territory of Freedomland."

Cloma informed his friend and 'paesano' (fellow Boholano), then Senator Carlos P. Garcia, about the uncharted sea and islands that he had discovered and asked his advice on the technicalities of making a claim to the territory. In 1953, Carlos p. Garcia was elected Vice President, with Ramon Magsaysay as President of the Philippines. As concurrent Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Vice President Garcia was interested in Cloma's discovery and intent to claim the territory.

On May 15, 1956, Tomas Cloma wrote to Vice President and Secretary of Foreign Affairs Carlos P. Garcia, informing his exalted province-mate and 'paesano' that forty Filipino citizens were undertaking a survey of a group of islands that they were occupying off the western coast of Palawan.

Attached to Cloma's letter to Garcia was a "Notice of Claim" addressed to the whole world. This was sent to newspapers of general circulation, as well as to foreign embassies in Manila. The notice ran:

GREETINGS:

Notice is hereby served to the WHOLE WORLD that the undersigned in his behalf and in behalf of his Associates, and as citizens of the Philippines, claims ownership over a territory bounded as follows: (pointing latitudes, longitudes, areas, distances and coordinates)

This territory is composed of islands, sand cays, sand bars, coral reefs, and fishing grounds with a total area of about SIXTY FOUR THOUSAND NINE HUNDRED AND SEVENTY SIX (64,976) square nautical miles.

This claim is based on the rights of discovery and/or occupation open, public and adverse as against the whole world.

Manila, Philippines, May 15, 1956

Tomas Cloma
PMI Nautical School.

Tomas Cloma was formally claiming the island group that he had discovered with his younger brother. Six days after the release of the Notice, he issued a "second representation" informing the Secretary of Foreign Affairs that the territory claimed had been named by the claimants as "The Free Territory of Freedomland." Cloma had launched his daring international adventure.

In the excitement, the media, covering the dramatic event, dubbed Cloma as "the discoverer of Freedomland," and, partly in jest, "Admiral Cloma" and "Admiral without a fleet." Cloma's action generated a lot of interest in the Philippines and international media. Some foreign officials belittled his claims to the islands, which, according to them, had no practical value even during low tide when more islands would appear. However, some neighboring countries did not take his claim lightly. Vietnam issued a claim statement. France, Taiwan, and the People's Republic of China lodged their formal protests and assert their own right to the Islands. This was to be yet another chain of events that would escalate the threats to peace in the region at the height of the East-West Cold War.

Meanwhile, on September 21, 1972, President Ferdinand E. Marcos declared martial law and assumed supreme powers over all branches and agencies of government. He abolished the Congress, emasculated the judiciary, controlled the media, and arrested and detained thousands of his opponents and critics.

In 1974, as Tomas Cloma was dubbed as "Admiral," President Ferdinand E. Marcos ordered that Tomas Cloma would be thrown into a Camp Crame prison cell, on grounds of "usurpation of authority." Cloma was released several months later when he turned over all claims to the islands under a "Deed of Assignment and Waiver of Rights" to the Philippine government – for one peso.

Right after President Marcos got Cloma's "deed of assignment," the Armed Forces of the Philippines under Defense Secretary Enrile quickly and covertly transformed the uninhabited island into a fortification and named it "Pag-Asa Island."

When the martial law regime of President Marcos took over Cloma's claim for its own, it renamed as Kalayaan Islands. This was probably meant to erase its original identity as Cloma's Freedomland.

The Government described Freedomland – which it renamed the Kalayaan Islands – as a group of 53 islands within the national territory and the country's Exclusive Economic Zone in terms of the International Law of the Sea.

The islands and seas of Freedomland are regarded by a number of countries in Asia as part of the so-called Spratly Islands or the Spratlys, actually a vast area of islets, reefs, shoals and rocky outcrops in the West Philippine Sea. In whole or in part, the Spratlys are being claimed by various countries in Asia. On the other hand, the Philippines claims Freedomland as belonging exclusively to its national territory.

However, Tomas Cloma was not fully aware of these facts when he set out on his great adventure and declared The Free Territory of Freedomland as his own. His initial concerns were simpler and even mundane. It was his original intention to utilize the island's resources for business. Not everybody gets the opportunity; he contemplated, to build a society anew according to his personal ideals and principles. He would plan to establish a new nation and government "of peace and tranquility, devoid of sham, violence and cutthroat living..."

Tomas Cloma y Arbolente was born on September 18, 1904, in Panglao, Bohol to Ciriaco Cloma, a Spanish settler, and Irena Arbolente, a native of Bohol. Freedomland/Kalayaan Islands by their very name are a testament to the indomitable courage and boundless vision and aspirations of a heroic Boholano. As a young boy on the beaches of Panglao, Bohol, Tomas Cloma dreamed early on just to set foot on the next island of Cebu, and later Manila, to seek his fortune and fulfill his destiny. He had done much in his quest, much more than he could have imagined.

This day in 1917, journalist and fiction writer, Nicomedes Márquez Joaquín (Nick Joaquín), was born in Paco, Manila. Proclaimed as National Artist for Literature in 1976, he is considered one of the great writers of Philippine literature in English.

Born as the fifth child to Don Leocadio Joaquín and Salomé Márquez, Nick Joaquín developed a voracious love for reading. At age 17, his first big break was his poem on the fictional character of Miguel de Cervantes, Don Quixote, published in The Tribune, where he also worked as copy editor.

He soon began writing poems and short stories that reflected his love for the City of Manila. As a religious man, he was on his way to the priesthood, having had a scholarship in St. Albert's Convent in Hong Kong, but soon left that path to continue pursuing writing.

His stories were influenced by his devotion to La Naval de Manila, while integrated to the rich heritage of Old Manila. Soon he would include folk tradition and the supernatural in his stories. Literary critics call his works that of "Tropical Gothic."

The traumatic destruction of Manila in World War II had a tremendous impact on him and his works, reflected in his poignant play, The Portrait of the Artist as Filipino (1950), and his book, Manila, My Manila (1990).

Meanwhile, his reportage printed by the Philippines Free Press magazine in post-war Philippines were impressive works in and of themselves. His columns showed his verve in writing of the complex maneuverings, and comical quirks of politicians in the halls of power.

During Martial Law, although Joaquín initially rejected the offer of proclaiming him as National Artist by Pres. Ferdinand Marcos, he eventually accepted it as a bargaining chip in 1976 to exchange for the release of his friend, journalist Jose "Pete" Lacaba.

Months after the end of the dictatorship, he published a book entitled, Quartet of the Tiger Moon (1986), where he wrote of the EDSA People Power Revolution in great detail, and even inserting perceptive commentary to capture the meaning of that moment.

Joaquin is widely regarded as the greatest Filipino writer of the 20th century. His works earned him great renown even after his death in 2004. In his centennial birth anniversary in 2017, he became the third Filipino author to be published by Penguin Classics.

PRESS RELEASE

Indian operating '5-6' business arrested by BI

SILANG, Cavite—Bureau of Immigration (BI) agents arrested an Indian national for illegally engaging in a money-lending business in Cavite.

BI Intelligence Division Chief Fortunato Manahan Jr., identified the Indian as Bahg Singh, 48, who was arrested by operatives of the BI Intelligence Division Regional Intelligence Operation Unit IV-A and IV-B on Friday, in Brgy. Inchican in Silang, Cavite.

Singh was arrested pursuant to a mission order issued by BI Commissioner Jaime Morente, after receiving a formal complaint reporting the Indian's illegal activities.

He was reported by the complainant to be running a '5-6' lending business, and was said to be always drunk and would commit violent acts.

During the operations, he was caught in the act of collecting money from a store inside the said barangay.  He was also found by BI agents to be undocumented, and was confirmed to be already overstaying.

Morente then appealed to the public to report foreign nationals engaged in illegal activities in their community. "Reporting illegal aliens in your area would allow our intelligence agents to initiate an investigation against them," said Morente.  "We remain relentless in our drive to deport foreign nationals who blatantly disregard our laws," he added.

Singh will be temporarily held at the BI Warden Facility in Bicutan, Taguig City, pending the resolution of the deportation case filed against him.

The NTF-ELCAC Strongly Condemns the Agitation and False Propaganda Dissemination by the Disgruntled and Unruly Mob in Front of the COMELEC Office

Earlier today, a mob wearing black shirts, disturbed the peace in front of the COMELEC Office, shouting invectives and hurling insults at the COMELEC Officials.

Our policemen kept them at bay.

Clearly, the mob are supporters of a presidential candidate and several senatorial candidates allied with the said presidential aspirant who lost ng bonggang bongga during the May 9, 2022 elections.

This is an act of desperation on the part of the mob.
This is not an act of decent, rational, and well-meaning individuals.

It is our duty to inform this unruly mob to stay within the bounds of the law.

Any attempt or overt act on your part leading to the disruption of the peace and order and causing harm to the public will be dealt with accordingly by our law enforcement agencies.

Do not make this ruckus and meltdown of emotions due to your massive defeat in the elections become a threat to national security.

Do not force the government to use the full force of the law against you.

Do not also allow yourselves to be used and exploited by anti-government elements to advance their selfish agenda.

The people have spoken.
Respect that voice.

Otherwise, you will lose whatever is left of your self-respect and dignity by crying over something that has been decided already by the masses.

Cope with your defeat.
Respect the will of the Filipino people.

If you cannot bear to accept the election results and be part of nation building.

Do not be a part of the problem.

This is a time for unity and solidarity.

Go home. Pray. Plant trees. Wash the Dishes. Spend time with your Mom and Dad.

Do not waste your time and your future in the company of a bunch of misguided and disgruntled mob who cannot be decent and gracious enough to accept the will of the Filipino people.

BUY ME A JET! A CALL FROM UKRAINIAN MILITARY PILOTS.
Despite all the predictions, the Ukrainian Air Force has already survived 67 days of war with Russia and was successful in protecting the largest part of the Ukrainian sky. However, it cost the lives of many pilots. The Ukrainian Air Force has many more pilots than available fighter jets. With more aircraft UAF will clear the skies from the invaders and save many more lives.

RTF6-ELCAC Condemns the CPP-NPA-NDF Recruitment and Exploitation of Children for the Purpose of Undertaking Acts of Terrorism

On May 3, 2022, soldiers from the 15th Infantry Battalion engaged a unit of the NPA's South West Front in the hinterlands of Candoni, Negros Occidental.

One of the members of the NPA's South West Front perished in the encounter. He is a seventeen year-old teenager known by his alias in the NPA as "Kisap" or "Boyca". He is from Sipalay, Negros Occidental.

We extend our prayers and sympathy to the family of the young man who was deprived of a bright and better future by the CPP-NPA-NDF who deceived and recruited him to join the CPP-NPA-NDF terrorist organization that has done nothing but ruin the lives of the children in Negros Island and in other parts of the country.

Had the CPP-NPA-NDF kept their hands off the late alias "Boyca", he would have been alive today.

However,  the CPP-NPA-NDF, being the terrorist organization that it is, can never take their filthy hands off our children.

They take pride and a perverse sense of joy in deceiving and recruiting the youth.

They target our children to be recruits to wage their war of terror against the government and the Filipino people.

The CPP-NPA-NDF is the worst among the worst of criminals in our country. The people and the organizations blindly supporting and enabling them are no better than these criminals and terrorists.

They deserve a 10th Circle of Hell for their crimes against the Filipino people,

for their crimes against parents who lost a child to their perverted and evil cause,

We cry out loud in anger at the CPP-NPA-NDF as we remember the horrors that they have committed against scores of Filipino youth that they have deceived and exploited, radicalized and weaponized,

for robbing our youth of their innocence, and forcing them to live a life of hatred, of violence,  of abuse, of fear, and of terror,

for causing the pointless deaths of our children in furtherance of their godless and soulless ideology,

Words cannot embrace the indignation that we feel against the CPP-NPA-NDF for their sins against our people.

We call on the peace loving people of Candoni, Sipalay, and the entire Negros Island to condemn the CPP-NPA-NDF and their allied front organizations.

We call on the people of Western Visayas and the entire nation to stand in solidarity against the CPP-NPA-NDF terrorist organization.

Let us Win the Peace by ending the local communist armed conflict.

Gregorio Zara invented the first videophone, or two-way television-telephone, in the mid-1950s, long before the digital age began. When Zara patented it in 1955 as a "photo phone signal separation network," it moved beyond science fiction and comic books. Zara's videophone was never intended to be a commercial product in the first place.

Aside from the videophone, Zara holds 30 patents, including a solar-energy device, a propeller-cutting machine, and an airplane engine that runs on pure alcohol as fuel.

On July 19, 1959, President Carlos Garcia recognized him for his contributions to aeronautics during National Science and Technology Week. President Ferdinand E. Marcos honored the National Scientist Award on him in 1978.

On October 15, 1978, he died at the age of 76. The Philippine government held a state funeral for him at the Libingan ng mga Bayani.

Philippine History / Sakdalista Movement
May 04, 2022, 10:18:10 AM
On May 2, 1935, the Sakdal or Sakdalista movement launched an ill-fated uprising in at least 14 towns in the Philippines. The devastating loss of the rebellion, which misled its followers that assistance would come from Japan, resulted to some 60 dead among the Sakdalistas. Its founder, former Senate employee Benigno Ramos, fled to Tokyo where he would eventually be arrested.

Established initially as a publication of the same name in 1930, the term Sakdal was believed to have come from the French writer Emile Zola's "J'Accuse...!", an open letter published in 1898. However, it was also said that Sakdal followers believe their movement's name was derived from James 1:4, "At inyong pabayaan na ang pagtitiis ay magkaroon ng sakdal na gawa, upang kayo'y maging sakdal at ganap, na walang anoman kakulangan." (text from Ang Dating Biblia, 1905)

In preparation for the 1935 national election, Sakdal entered a coalition with other opposition parties including Gregorio Aglipay's Republican Party, Emilio Aguinaldo's National Socialist Party, and Rufino Tumanda's Partido Komunista ng Pilipinas (PKP-1930). Their participation in the election was thrown off by the May uprising. Nonetheless, Ramos would return to the Philippines in 1938 aboard a German ship, forming the successor party called Partido Ganap de Filipinas.

While Ramos was in prison and Gregorio Tobias was exercising leadership of the party, Ganap would be one of the opposition parties challenging the dominant Nacionalista Party in the 1941 election. During the Pacific War, which reached the Philippines a month after the election, Ganap would be dissolved, becoming instead an active part of the Kapisanan sa Paglilingkod sa Bagong Pilipinas (KALIBAPI), the sole political organization allowed to operate under Japanese occupation.

USA and Canada / Donald Trump on Roe vs Wade
May 04, 2022, 07:07:07 AM
CBN News Political Analyst David Brody sat down for an exclusive interview with former President Donald Trump Tuesday to discuss the possibility of the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade.

The following is the transcript from one segment of the interview.

David Brody: The Supreme Court this big deal, Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court now authenticating that draft opinion by Sam Alito, in essence overturning Roe v. Wade, were you surprised to see this?

Donald Trump: Well, we don't know exactly if that's true, because it was certainly something that they're working on it would imagine, I don't think anyone made it up. It sounded like him. He's a great man. By the way. He's a tremendous guy. But as a justice, he's just fantastic. And, and you have some, some great ones up there now. But we have to find out what that means. And somebody's going to do something about it. Are they going to try and change it? Is it real, nobody really knows. And they don't know who leaked it. I will say the leak was a terrible thing. You're just not used to that for the Supreme Court. We see it so much leaking in our world, in your world in my world. And although not so much. Now, it's very interesting. You know, you try and cover those leaks, but you've never seen it, or they've rarely seen it. In the Supreme Court. It was very shocking, I think. I think it was very bad thing for the court.

David Brody: Chuck Schumer says it's all your fault. Of course, if Roe v Wade gets overturned, obviously he's talking about those three pro-life Supreme Court justices.

Donald Trump: And yeah, well, a lot of people are very happy about that. So some people maybe say it's my fault. And some people say, thank you very much.

Join Ukraine's President Zelenskyy in praying for his nation.

"God, the great, the only one, protect Ukraine.

Protect those who protect us and defend our motherland. Strengthen the will of those who protect us from captivity. Help those who help them. Give strength to those who give their all.

Let everyone who seeks - will always find. May everyone who is on the way now, always overcome it. May anyone who does their best to save never lose faith that all things are possible. Save the lives of those who save the lives of others. May life win the battle of death everyday.

Take care of our mothers and give strength to those waiting for a son or daughter from the war. Give resilience to those who did not wait for their child from the front. Help overcome the unbearable pain of those who lost their native child in the cities and villages where Russia brought death.

Give strength and stability to our parents to wait for peace and victory and return of their own. Let them see how our land will be liberated and restored, and give us the strength to do so.

Take care of all our children and give each of them a happy youth, youth, maturity and old age.

You know we have not destroyed other nations, so don't let us be destroyed. Save Ukraine. Her right and left bank when we are beaten right and left cheek.

We believe that during Your judgment you will not forget and condemn all those who have forgotten Your commandments. Don't forget about Buchu, Irpin, Gostomel, Borodianku, Chernihiv, Mykolaiv, Kharkiv, Kramatorska, Mariupol and Kiev.

Let all the people living in other cities and hear creepy explosions hear the victory salute.

You carry us through difficult trials and give us on this way to reach a fair end - to the beginning of a happy life and prosperity of Ukraine, physical and spiritual.

You see our hearts are often filled with pain and anger, filled with hatred for fishponds and everything they care about. Don't let these feelings destroy us from the inside. May anger be turned into our good deeds and power to overcome the forces of evil.

Save us from discord and divisions. Let us not lose our unity. Strengthen our will and our spirit. Don't let us lose ourselves, the thirst for freedom, the passion for the righteous struggle, and also the hope for victory.

God, do not let us lose Ukraine, as well as faith."

Jerusalem Dateline: Hundreds of Israelis gathered in the city of Beit Shemesh on Sunday to lay to rest a 23-year-old security guard who was shot and killed by Palestinian terrorists late Friday.

When the terror attack happened, security guard Daniel Vyacheslav Golev was working outside the entrance to Ariel, a major Israeli settlement community located in the West Bank – biblical Judea and Samaria.

Security footage shows two people getting out of a vehicle and open firing on Golev at close range before fleeing.

According to authorities, Golev shielded another guard, who happened to be his fiancée, with his own body. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

At the funeral, Golev's cousin, Vladimir, said he had "such a good, big heart."

"We'll tell our children and grandchildren about you, and you'll be a role model for them," he said.

Yevgeny Fligelman, the father of Golev's fiancée Victoria, thanked him for saving his daughter's life.

"Vyacheslav is an angel, he saved my daughter," he said. "They were together and planned to get married next year. He proposed to her two weeks ago. He already regarded her as his wife. Victoria is still in trauma from what had happened, and she is in a difficult mental state."

Press Release
Some four teenaged New People's Army (NPA) rebels have surrendered to government forces in Davao de Oro, a military official said Friday.

Capt. Mark Anthony Tito, the Army's 10th Infantry Division spokesperson, said the surrenderers were members of NPA's Regional Operations Command Southern Mindanao Regional Committee.

The four yielded to the Army's 66th Infantry Battalion (IB) in Barangay Coronobe, Maragusan, Davao de Oro, Wednesday, Tito said in a statement.

Tito identified only two of the four through their aliases: Jomari,18, a squad political guide, and Vina, 19, a squad supply officer.

Following their surrender, the group assisted 66IB soldiers in locating two M16 rifles they themselves hid in Barangay Andap, New Bataan town.

Tito said the two minors were already reported to the New Bataan Municipal Social Welfare Development Office (MSWDO) for appropriate action.

Maj. Gen. Nolasco Mempin, the 10ID commander, welcomed the surrender and rescue of the minors.

"To the members of the NPA, stop exploiting the Filipino youth. Surrender now and abandon the armed struggle that victimized thousands of lives," Mempin said.

Since 2016, the 10ID recorded around 121 rescued minors being exploited by the NPA in its armed struggle.

The CPP-NPA is listed as a terrorist organization by the United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the Philippines.

The Anti-Terrorism Council also formally designated the NDF as a terrorist organization on June 23, 2021, citing it as "an integral and separate part" of the CPP-NPA that was created in April 1973. #SupportOurTroops

THE UNSUNG PHILIPPINE HERO
Captain David Fagen

If you would stroll around Metro Manila, you may walk thru a street or places named after foreign individuals [e.g. McKinley Road, Lawton Avenue, Taft Avenue, and others]. Having these streets etched in their names reminisced the minds of the Filipinos these foreign individuals had contributed important things that shaped the course of Philippine history.

In spite of their substantial contributions to our history, however, there are also other foreign key individuals in our past who were more deserving, yet they have been deliberately ignored and forgotten for their tremendous contributions to our history even to the point of their heroic deeds for this country. One of the best examples of that is CAPTAIN DAVID FAGEN during the Philippine-American War (1899-1902).

WHO WAS DAVID FAGEN?
DAVID FAGEN was an African-American Army Cpl., born sometime in 1878 in Tampa, and a son of a former slave in Florida.

In 1898, Fagen enlisted in the 24th Infantry, all-Black cavalry in the US Army, and was sent to Cuba for a war. After a year in Cuba, Fagen was deployed to Manila to fight in the Philippine-American War.

After a few months of battling against the Filipinos, while in war, he sees and hates when white soldiers called the Filipinos, "niggers" (as it also reminds him of tremendous discrimination in his home country), he also opposed American imperialism.

Reports indicate that he had constant arguments with his commanding officers and requested to be transferred at least three times which contributed to his growing resentment of the Army. [1]

He contemplated what he was doing, so one day, he had the decision to defy orders from his superior and decided not to go to fight against Filipinos anymore.

He stole four pistols and a horse and he rode off and joined the Filipino Republican Army (Philippine Liberation Army) under General Aguinaldo.

Fagen turned his back on his own army, for his new life as a Filipino guerrilla that began on November 17, 1899. He becomes a very successful fighter, cunning, and highly skilled guerrilla who wreaked havoc, harassed, and evaded large conventional American units and achieved legendary status in Filipino Community.

Fagen trained Filipino soldiers and was soon promoted to captain and given his own command.

He became the most notorious and hated American traitor, a turncoat hero of the Philippine-American War that his capture became an obsession to the U.S. military and the American public. [2]

David Fagen was ultimately never captured, his whereabouts were unclear at the end of the war.
