At least three names surface as interested to run for president of the Association of Barangay Councils (ABC) Bohol chapter after the position will be left vacant by Vice Gov-elect Concepcion Lim.

Lim is presently the ABC provincial president and sits as ex-officio member of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan.

The slot to represent the barangay captains at the SP continues to be highly politicized even as barangay captains are mandated to be non-partisan.

The election for provincial ABC president will be done among the municipal ABC presidents.

The probable bets for ABC Provincial president are Crispina Vergara of Mabini, Efren Tanjay of Ubay and Faro Cabalit of this city. - Bohol Chronicle

Book Reviews / The Help by Kathryn Stockett

The Help by Kathryn Stockett

What perfect timing for this optimistic, uplifting debut novel (and maiden publication of Amy Einhorn's new imprint) set during the nascent civil rights movement in Jackson, Miss., where black women were trusted to raise white children but not to polish the household silver. Eugenia Skeeter Phelan is just home from college in 1962, and, anxious to become a writer, is advised to hone her chops by writing about what disturbs you. The budding social activist begins to collect the stories of the black women on whom the country club sets relies and mistrusts enlisting the help of Aibileen, a maid who's raised 17 children, and Aibileen's best friend Minny, who's found herself unemployed more than a few times after mouthing off to her white employers. The book Skeeter puts together based on their stories is scathing and shocking, bringing pride and hope to the black community, while giving Skeeter the courage to break down her personal boundaries and pursue her dreams. Assured and layered, full of heart and history, this one has bestseller written all over it. (Feb.)

Dogwood by Chris Fabry

In the small town of Dogwood, West Virginia, Karin has buried her shattered dreams by settling for a faithful husband whose emotional distance from her deep passions and conflicts leaves her isolated. Loaded with guilt, she tries to raise three small children and "do life" the best she can. Will returns to Dogwood intent on pursuing the only woman he has ever lovedâ€"only to find there is far more standing in his way than lost years in prison. The secrets of Will and Karin's past begin to emerge through Danny Boyd, a young boy who wishes he hadn't survived the tragedy that knit those two together as well as tore them apart. The trigger that will lay their pain bare and force them to face it rather than flee is the unlikely figure of Ruthie Bowles, a withered, wiry old woman who leads Karin so deep into her anger against God that it forces unexpected consequences.

Graves in the Wilderness by J.R. Gordon

"Piper Campbell, the son of Ulster-Scott migrants befriends N’Kawa, the only survivor of the East Texas black Indian Karankawa tribe. As brothers, the two become inseparable. The horrors of the American civil war behind them, Piper and N’kawa, disillusioned and alone, sell their Texas estate and travel the seven seas in search of new land to rebuild their lives as cattlemen. Settling in Australia, the enterprising two seize an opportunity to establish themselves in Cooktown, a fledgeling port that would see tens-of-thousands of hungry miners pass through on their way to the rivers of gold in the Cape York Wilderness. There, they become unwilling participants of the first overland expedition from Cooktown to the Palmer River as protectors of the ostracised but resourceful Chinese. They soon find themselves involved in yet another war, this time as unwitting participants bearing arms against the local Aboriginals, known as the Merkins, a formidable and ferocious foe. In the events that follow, they suffer unimaginable heartbreak and loss. Graves in the Wilderness is a fast paced, exciting, brutal and often confronting novel. Rich in incident, compassion and frustration ... a novel that captures the essence of a by-gone era."

Leadville by James Best

When New York City shopkeeper Steve Dancy moved west to experience the frontier, he wound up embroiled in a deadly feud ... a feud he was forced to settle with guns. Now all he wants to do is follow up on a few business interests, write about his adventures, and continue his exploration of the West.

But in the autumn of 1879, Joseph McAllen asks Dancy for help. Ute renegades have abducted a young girl near Mesa Verde, Colorado, and the Pinkerton captain wants him to join the rescue party. Surprisingly, the trail doesn't lead into the San Juan Mountains, but to Leadville -- a rich mining town teeming with the worst elements of a raw frontier. Bitter feuds, vendettas, and greed turn the affair into a bloody conflict that spans the state.

Dancy has proven that he can handle himself in dangerous situations. But will this shopkeeper survive the perils of an untamed mountain wilderness?

First, Do No Harm by Lisa Belkin

A look at medical ethics and the critical-care decisions made by the ethics committee, doctors, and four sets of patients/parents at Hermann Hospital in Texas between May-October 1988. Quality of life is measured against longevity and consideration is given to expenditure of limited resources. As most of these patients were children or young adults, the book has immediacy for high school students. The epilogue, written four years later, brings closure to decisions made. Young people interested in medicine or the health-care crisis are sure to find this involving. - Barbara Hawkins, Oakton High School, Fairfax, VA

Book Reviews / The Shopkeeper by James D. Best

The Shopkeeper by James D. Best

A Review:
Steve Dancy is set on experiencing the West. At first glance, he is nothing more than a dilettante Easterner intent on writing a journal about his adventures on the frontier. He's not running away from a hopeless life. To the contrary, he's educated and seems to have enough money for his simple needs. Although anxious to avoid trouble, he can be pushed only so far, and when he chances upon some bad men doing unspeakable things to a woman, he feels he must take a hand. It isn't long before he's caught up in gunplay, which leads him into taking desperate measures, including buying a bank and a hotel, and influencing the upcoming gubernatorial elections. Dancy is a far different man than these Westerners think he is. Wealthy after selling off his Eastern businesses, maybe he should have told them what kind of goods he sold, because he's sure not like any other shopkeepers they know.

This is a fast paced tale with an interesting hero. In structure, with short chapters, crisp dialogue, and lots of movement, it's reminiscent of a thriller. Sadly, neither of the women in this story were enduring, the older too evil and crass to believe, and the younger far from worthy of the infatuation the hero apparently feels toward her. The motivation seems weak for all the mayhem that ensues. Still, you'll certainly find enough twists and turns to provide an entertaining and exciting story. --Western Writers of America Roundup Magazine, August, 2008

Philippine Entertainment / GMA Sues Mo Twister
May 30, 2010, 10:33:06 PM
GMA NETWORK has filed a civil case against TV personality Mo Twister for alleged breach of contract, and rival station TV5 for hiring the host despite his exclusive contract with GMA 7.

In a 16-page complaint, the network asked the Quezon City Regional Trial Court Branch 217 to issue a temporary restraining order against Mohan Gumatay (Mo Twister’s real name), to prevent him from appearing in TV5 shows.

GMA 7 was particularly referring to TV5’s Sunday gabfest, “Paparazzi.”

The TV network asked the court to order Gumatay to pay P1,040,000 â€" twice his compensation for one year for co-hosting GMA 7’s “Showbiz Central” â€" and P1 million in exemplary damages.

The host and TV5 were also asked to pay P1 million in attorney’s fees and P1 million in litigation expenses.

In the complaint, GMA 7 claimed it had an existing exclusive talent agreement with Gumatay, which he violated after he “rendered services to defendant TV5 as talent and initially appeared on the TV5 show ‘Paparazzi’ as host on May 15, 2010.” -PDI

Our Daily Bread

Today’s technology allows some people to work 24/7. We can bring our work home or take it on vacation. Work is ever-present with usâ€"except when the electricity goes off.

An ice storm last winter covered several states in a thick glasslike glaze. Trees and branches fell, blocking roads and keeping people home. Power lines fell, leaving people in cold darkness, unable to accomplish anything that required electricity.

Whenever something like this interrupts my life, I realize how important my own work is to me. Without it, I feel unimportant, unproductive, and useless. But God doesn’t want work to be that important to us, and we shouldn’t need a power outage to get us to stop. In the Old Testament, God had a plan for getting His people to stop and pay attention to Him. It was called Sabbath. On the seventh day of the week, they were to stop their work (Ex. 23:12).

Although New Testament believers aren’t required to keep this law, rest is still important. Practicing a day of rest can keep us from the faulty belief that our work is more important than God’s.

What does it take to make you stop and pay attention to God?

He gives me work that I may seek His rest,
He gives me strength to meet the hardest test;
And as I walk in providential grace,
I find that joy goes with me, at God’s pace. â€"Gustafson

If we do not come apart and rest awhile, we may just plain come apart. â€"Havner

While a friend and I walked along the path of the former Berlin Wall, he told me, “This is one of those ‘never say never’ places in my life.” He explained that during the years when the Wall divided the city, he had made a dozen trips through Checkpoint Charlie to encourage members of the church living under continuing surveillance and opposition in East Germany. More than once, he had been detained, questioned, and harassed by the border guards.

In 1988, he took his teenage children to West Berlin and told them, “Take a good look at this wall, because someday when you bring your children here, this wall will still be standing.” A year later it was gone.

When Saul of Tarsus began to attack the followers of Jesus, no one could have imagined that he would ever become a disciple of Christ. “Never. Not a chance.” Yet Acts 9:1-9 records the story of Saul’s blinding encounter with Jesus on the road to Damascus. Within a few days of that life-changing event, Saul was preaching in the synagogues of Damascus that Jesus was the Son of God, to the astonishment of all who heard him (vv.20-21).

When it comes to God’s work in the most difficult people we know, we should never say “never.”

God’s power cannot be confined
To what you think is possible;
So when it comes to changing livesâ€"
Imagine the impossible. â€"Sper

Never say never when it comes to what God can do.

In a message to the 2002 graduates of Cedarville University, Dr. Paul Dixon encouraged them with these words: “Your times are in God’s hands.” Our family listened and thought it was appropriate for the graduates, which included our daughter Julie.

We had no idea that in 5 days our 17-year-old Melissa would graduate to heaven through a car accidentâ€"and we would be left to recall with new meaning that thought from Psalm 31:15.

Over the years, we have become painfully aware that in God’s mysterious ways, He has planned for some Christians a life that is short. I think of one young Christian girl, the kind with a smile for everyone, who had a sore fingerâ€"and a week later was dead from a raging infection. Or the young believer who was killed while playing softball when a ball hit her in the neck. Or the teen boy who loved Jesus and fishingâ€"and died when a car hit him as he rode his bike home from the fishing hole. Melissa, Heather, Maggie, and Thomas. In their short lives, they created a legacy of faith in Jesus and love for others. They were ready when His time for them had come.

“I trust in You,” the psalmist said, recognizing that his life was in God’s hands alone (vv.14-15). Are you trusting God for whatever comes next on your calendar?

Ever gracious, ever wise,
All my times are in Your hand,
All events at Your command. â€"Ryland

In her fascinating book Garlic and Sapphires: The Secret Life of a Critic in Disguise, Ruth Reichl reflects on her 6 years as a New York Times restaurant critic. Because she was the most influential critic in the country, top restaurants posted her photograph so their employees could recognize her. Hoping to earn a high rating in the New York Times, the staff intended to provide her with their top service and best cuisine.

In response, Reichl developed a clever strategy. Hoping to be treated as a regular patron, she disguised herself. On one occasion, she dressed up as an old woman. The restaurant made her wait a long time to be seated and then was unresponsive to her requests.

In the early church, James spoke out against favoritism: “[If] you pay attention to the one wearing the fine clothes and say to him, ‘You sit here in a good place,’ and say to the poor man, ‘You stand there,’ or, ‘Sit here at my footstool,’ have you not shown partiality among yourselves?” (2:3-4).

When people attend our churches, are they treated impartially? Or do we show favoritism to the wealthy or elite? God calls us to show concern for and interest in all people, regardless of their social status. Let’s welcome all to join us in worshiping the King!

Dear Lord, You welcomed us into Your kingdom, not because of who we are but because of who You areâ€" our loving and merciful God. Help us to open our arms of fellowship to all who enter in. Amen.

God lets us into His fellowship. Who are we to keep others out?

My Australian friend Graham wasn’t born blind. He was blinded by a freak accident at age 9. Yet he never felt sorry for himself. Wherever he went, he shared what Jesus Christ meant to him. His last trip was to Thailand as a practicing physiotherapist. Besides using his professional skills there, he wanted to share the gospel of Christ.

The four lepers in 2 Kings 7 had some good news to share as well. They had stumbled into the Syrian camp and found it deserted. After helping themselves to the food and loot, they remembered the starving people of Samaria, shut in as a result of a Syrian siege. Their response was: “We are not doing right. This day is a day of good news, and we remain silent” (v.9). So they went and told their fellow Israelites about the provisions.

Despite their physical and social disadvantages, both Graham and the lepers thought about others. They were thankful for what they had found and considered it too good to keep to themselves.

Do you know someone who needs to know what Jesus has done? Don’t make excuses for what you lack in abilities. Instead, share the good news of what the Lord has done for you, and your life will take on new purpose.

Help us, Lord, to be a lifeline
To a dying world today,
Bringing hope to hopeless people,
Telling them that Christ’s the way. â€"Sper

When we are thankful for what we have, we want to share it with others.

John Steinbeck’s Pulitzer prizewinning novel The Grapes of Wrath begins with a scene in drought-ravaged Oklahoma during the Great Depression. With the crops dying and the land choked by dust, the women watched the men to see if they would break under the strain. When they saw the men’s will to carry on, they took heart. Steinbeck writes, “Women and children knew deep in themselves that no misfortune was too great to bear if their men were whole.” The issue was not happiness, prosperity, or satisfaction, but wholeness. This is the great need of us all.

In the King James Version of the Bible, the word whole is often used to describe Jesus’ work of physical healing. When the Lord encountered a man who had been an invalid for 38 years, He asked, “Wilt thou be made whole?” (John 5:5-6 kjv). After Jesus healed the man, He challenged him to also embrace spiritual wholeness: “See, you have been made well. Sin no more, lest a worse thing come upon you” (v.14).

If we only want something Jesus can do for us, our relationship with Him will be limited. When we want Jesus Himself, He brings completeness to our lives. Christ wants, first and foremost, to make us whole.

I thank Thee for Thy precious Word
Where Thou didst make me see
My sinful self, my helpless soul,
Made whole by trusting Thee. â€"Anon.

Only Jesus can give wholeness to a broken life.

The Scripture reading from Luke 18 about children seemed unusual at the memorial service for David Holquist. After all, he was 77 when he died.

Yet the pastor said the verses fit David, a long-time college professor, perfectly. Part of his legacy was that he took time for childrenâ€"his own and others’. He made balloon animals and puppets, and helped in a puppet ministry at church. When planning worship services with others, he frequently asked, “What about the children?” He was concerned about what would help the childrenâ€"not just the adultsâ€"to worship God.

Luke 18 shows us the concern Jesus had for children. When people brought little ones to Him, the disciples wanted to protect Jesus, a busy man, from the bothersome children. But it seems that Jesus was not at all bothered by them. Just the opposite. The Bible says that Jesus was “greatly displeased” at the disciples, and said, “Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them” (v.16). Mark adds that Jesus took them in His arms and blessed them (10:14-16).

Let’s examine our own attitude about children and then follow the example of David Holquist. Find some ways to help them come to Jesus.

To those who are teaching the gospel,
With love in their hearts for its truth,
Comes the gentle reminder from heaven,
“Forget not the children and youth.” â€"Anon.

God has great concern for little children.

Century Tuna beefs up its health and wellness campaign as it introduces Angel Locsin as the new female celebrity endorser.

“We’re delighted to be joined by Angel as we position Century Tuna as a health and wellness brand. She’s a good role model as she herself embodies the Century Tuna healthy lifestyle with her love for sports and discipline in eating healthy to maintain her fit and sexy body” said Angela Gamboa, Century Tuna senior product manager.

Angel’s fit and sexy body can be attributed to her being a natural sports lover. Before she joined showbiz, she was a competitive swimmer. When she got into the biz, she was more interested in other challenging sports like muay thai, boxing and even diving, to help her maintain her fit body for the action roles which she is known for.

It was no surprise that Century Tuna chose her to become the next Century Tuna image model. Joining Derek Ramsay, Angel is geared to bring into her latest endorsement the kind of discipline and love for the fit and active life that she innately has, which would definitely inspire the public and health and wellness buffs to aspire for themselves.   - Phil Star

from Our Daily Bread

Before they were a week old, the eaglets were fighting over food. Neither was strong enough to hold up his head for more than a few seconds, so the pair looked like fuzzballs with bobble-heads attached. But whenever the parents brought food to the nest, the bigger eaglet was quick to peck down his brother to keep him from getting a single bite. His aggression would have been understandable if food was scarce, or if the parents couldn’t be trusted to supply what he needed. But nothing could be further from the truth. The eaglets were being fed fish many times their size; there was more than enough for both of them.

The greedy eaglet reminds me of our own foolishness when we try to get for ourselves something that belongs to someone else (James 4:1-5). Conflicts erupt because we want something that God has given to a friend, colleague, relative, or neighbor. Instead of asking God for what we need, we try to get what He’s given to someone else (v.2). But God has something good for each of us. We don’t need what belongs to anyone else. And we certainly never need to harm anyone to get what we need.

Our loving heavenly Father has more than enough for everyone.

The secret of contentment is
To let the Lord supply;
Just do your part and put God first
And on His Word rely. â€"D. De Haan

Our needs will never exhaust God’s supply.

In 1970, the Beatles began work on a documentary intended to show how their music was made. But instead of revealing the process of musical creativity, the film pulled the curtain back on a display of self-interest and bickering. The band members were more concerned about their own songs than the advancement of the group. Shortly after the project was completed, the group dissolved in disharmony and broken friendships.

It’s an age-old problem. In the first century AD, the apostle Paul feared that the believers in the church at Philippi would fall into the trap of selfishness. He knew that when the desire for personal advancement overrides concern for one another, attitudes quickly become disruptive and divisive.

To counteract this dangerous tendency, Paul wrote, “Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others” (Phil. 2:3-4).

What would a documentary of your life reveal? Selfishness or selflessness? We must look out for one another, for selfless concern will prevent division and build unity in our church families.

Lord, let me live from day to day In such a self-forgetful way
That even when I kneel to pray My prayer will be for others. â€"Meigs

A heart that is focused on others will not be consumed with self. - Our Daily Bread

There is a need to modernize the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) in order to better serve the need for quality and objective investigations of cases.

Rep-elect Erico Aumentado said this is one of his priority bills when he goes back to Congress in July.

Aumentado finds it significant to reorganize and modernize the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI).

By reorganization and modernization of NBI, Aumentado means upgrading its equipment and enhancing the skills of its personnel through additional trainings and keep them abreast of the latest technology in investigation and stand at par the investigative and detective capabilities of the private sector.

The efforts must set the NBI one step ahead of criminal groups, Aumentado pointed out.
Aumentado learned of NBI's needs from his recent meeting with NBI Director Nestor Mantaring and Deputy Director for Administrative Services Virgilio Mendez in Manila.

In that meeting, Mantaring and Mendez Both officials explained NBI's current situation and shared to Aumentado their modernization wish list.

Bohol Chronicle: Power consumption is increasing in the province as temperature continues to remain high during the past days due to the El Nino phenomenon.

Meanwhile, rains can not be expected until the middle or later part of June, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAG-ASA).

The peak hours which used to be in the evening only during normal weather condition would already register even at mid-morning due to massive use of cooling systems in homes and offices.
Bohol requires 58 megawatts even during day time, according to power distributors here.

A check made the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAG-ASA) revealed that temperature has gone up to 35 degrees celcius recorded on the three hottest days this month, May 12, 15 and 21.

Reports from PAGASA said the hot and humid weather may take a little bit longer as the rains are expected to come in the middle or later part of June.

By PIA - Bohol

IF by opera, one thinks only of the elite and bourgeois, think again.

In a rare show of artistic appreciation as a standing ovation in Bohol, the Philippine Opera Company (POC) no doubt has intimately touched the soul of the Boholano masa.

The POC, in its outreach program of bringing down the opera from its elitist pedestal touched base in Bohol through popularizing Filipino opera and music and drama appreciation for the masa, a standing ovation was in order.

Last Friday, at the Bohol Cultural Center, Boholanos had a rare and yet full night of moving renditions of POC’s well-loved repertoire of Filipino music in theaters and opera music.

Brought in Bohol by the Philippine Heritage Festival Incorporated for the Heritage Month of May, the POC was also sponsored by Bohol Provincial Government in cooperation with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and the Department of Tourism.

Claiming as the only opera company in the country that produces regular opera productions since 1999, the POC is managed by Filipino classical singers who want to share the celebration of the happy fusion of music and drama in the hope of developing the country’s new generation of classical singers and appreciative audiences.

“POC’s exquisite performance at the Bohol Cultural Center is definitely one important way of bringing to the masa in Bohol a live opera music performed by no less than world class singers doing a rare version of presenting the highly elitist opera to the Filipinos,” admits a cultural worker who paid P150 to claim a seat during the concert.

Performing the company’s package showcasing the evolution of Filipino music through song and movement, the Harana strings authentic indigenous and fuses with western theatrics and yet gets a way with it as it plays with religious tenacity on blending the performance with the native Philippine music traditions.

The Harana repertoire includes the Igorot Suite, which develops on the chanting and the classic Igorot dancing in its Philippine Skyland rituals.

It also brings to the audience the Muslim suite which ornately portrays in vivid colors the Arabian and Indo-Malaysian cultures moved by rhythmic music and dancing.

The Visayan suite was indeed received with ardent applause as the expression of the simple pleasures of living in the lowlands was sang in its most eloquent language through a dance theater.

The company also performed the Maraic Clara suite, while highlighted the women’s role in nation-building, and the contemporary classics ended the presentation prompting a standing for a classic display of theatrical power characteristic of operas. (PIA-Bohol)

By Rene U. Borromeo (The Freeman)

The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) yesterday announced that at least 17 private colleges and a state college in Central Visayas will implement a tuition fee increase this year.

CHED regional director Amelia Biglete said her office had granted the requests of 17 private colleges and the public college to ensure that they provide decent salaries to their teachers, and improve their schools.

In an interview over dyLA yesterday afternoon, Biglete said the number of colleges granted a tuition fee increase was only 13 percent of the total 141 colleges in the region.

She said the Asian College of Technology in Cebu City, which is owned by City Councilor Rodrigo Abellanosa, was granted an eight percent tuition fee increase, while Benedicto Colleges in Mandaue City was granted 13 percent.

The Blessed Trinity College in Talibon Bohol will implement a 10 percent tuition fee hike; Bohol Wisdom School in Tagbilaran City, 30 percent; and Cebu Doctors’ University, five per cent.

The Cebu Institute of Technology will have seven percent tuition fee increase, Cebu Roosevelt Memorial Colleges, 14 percent, Foundation University of Dumaguete City, nine percent; and La Consolacion College in Bais City Negros Oriental, 15 percent.

Other tertiary schools implementing increase in tuitions are Saint Louie de Manila College in Bogo City, 9.5 percent; Saint Paul University in Dumaguete City, 10 percent; Saint Theresa’s College, five percent; Trinidad, Bohol Municipal College, three percent; University of San Carlos, 7.98 percent; University of San Jose-Recoletos, 7.5 percent, and University of Southern Philippines-Foundation, seven percent.

Although Biglete announced that there are 18 colleges granted with tuition increase, she only mentioned 16 schools.

According to her, they were glad that schools in the region heeded to their request not to implement tuition fee increases last year.

This is the reason why her office granted their request for a tuition fee hike this year.

School administrators promised that profit from the tuition fee increases will be used not only to upgrade the salaries of the teachers but to improve their facilities as well. â€"/LPM   (FREEMAN NEWS)
