Thanks for the info, Miss Isle. Next assignment: how the term FIFTH DIMENSION came about. Ajaw na tong 6TH SENSE kay bag-o pato gigam-ag sine ajejejeje  ;D

nakutaw ang akong curiosity ani, fr chic.  di ni nako paikyason, puslan man nga type nako ang trivia. ;D  i researched so i will know a bit...

the 5th dimension is primarily a term for theoretical physics.

"In physics, the fifth dimension is a hypothetical extra dimension beyond the usual three spatial dimensions and one time dimension of Relativity."  (wiki)

this will do at the moment.  it can already be understood in a way.  wa ni nako tiwasa ang taas-taas nga definition kay morag di na inenglis; labaw pang di bisaya, hehe.

(for those interested in theoretical physics whose dimensions are defined further by more theories, please go to:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Five-dimensional_space)

USA and Canada / Controversial 9/11 Cross?
July 31, 2011, 12:14:07 AM
9/11 Cross Causes Controversy at WTC Memorial

Michael Söze
July 29, 2011

Earlier this week a group of atheists filed a lawsuit to take down a cross erected at the Lower Manhattan memorial to the victims of 9/11.

According to the complaint filed in New York state court, the presence of the cross in a government-financed museum violates the country’s constitution by promoting Christianity, without mention of other religions.

While some individuals see the 9/11 cross â€" a creation consisting of intersecting steel beams found in the ground zero rubble â€" as a symbol of perseverance and faith, members of the American Atheists claim it provokes â€" and I am not making this up â€" “symptoms of depression, headaches, anxiety, and mental pain and anguish from the knowledge that they are made to feel officially excluded from the ranks of citizens who were directly injured by the 9/11 attack.”

Dave Silverman, president of the American Atheists organization, claims the answer to combating the “side-effects” of the cross is simple:

“What we’re looking for is a remedy that honours everyone equally, with a religion-neutral display, or display of equal size and prominence. They can allow every religious position to put in a symbol of equal size and stature, or they can take it all out, but they don’t get to pick and choose,” said Silverman.

So what type of “symbol” best represents all citizens equally?

According to Mr. Silverman, who also mentioned his group would pay for such a “universal” tribute,  good symbols would be either a firefighter, carrying out a victim, or an atom, the basic building block of all matter, including humans.

Cat Serial Killer Sean Lynde Arrested in Manhattan

Duncan Riley
August 22, 2009

Sean Lynde, a graphic artist and suspected cat serial killer has been arrested in Manhattan, NY.

Police say that Lynde systematically killed at least four of his girlfriend's cats and tortured at least two others over a period of about four months starting in October, 2008.

The feline death toll from Lynde’s cat serial killing spree is as follows:

1. Sean Lynde moved into his girlfriend, Rachael Strate’s Manhattan apartment on October 1 2008.  Three days later her cat was found dead in the laundry room with a mouth full of laundry detergent.  A necropsy (animal autopsy) showed the cat had severe trauma to it’s head from being beaten.

2. Later that same month, another of Lynde’s girlfriend's cats was found to have severe head trauma and had to be put down.

3. The following month, Strate adopted two kittens from an animal shelter but one was returned because he appeared lethargic and had trouble walking.  The second kitten died late in November and Lynde told the Vet the cat had fallen off a table.

4. Strate then adopted two more kittens in mid December.  One of the cats was brought in and treated for a broken paw the same day.  Around Christmas, the second kitten suffered head trauma that resulted in blindness.  The cat passed away a month later in January 2009 from a broken neck.

Lynde’s girlfriend, Rachael Strate, never did suspect that he was the one killing the cats.  It was a an anonymous tip that led to Lynde’s arrest.

Kitler Can’t Find A Home

Kitten That Resembles Hitler Sits In Shelter

A 6-week old kitten that was found abandoned clinging to the side of a highway in Europe is having a hard time finding a home to adopt him since markings on his face and head bare a resemblance to Nazi leader Hitler’s infamous mustache and hairdo.

According to reports the kitten has been seen by more than 100 potential adopters since arriving at the shelter on July 21 but those who see the kitten (pictured aboved) note the resemblance and walk away.

Staff at the shelter told the Telegraph:

“She is not a specific breed and we don’t know where her black and white patches came from because we have no idea who her parents are.”

excerpts from:

Amy Winehouse: Reflections from Two Drug Policy Activists

by Tony Newman and Meghan Ralston
7/27/11 08:22 AM ET

There's an Overdose Crisis in the United States and Abroad.

People usually hear about overdose when it happens to a celebrity like Heath Ledger or Chris Farley.  Yet overdose is a silent killer that has quickly become one of the leading causes of accidental death in the United States.  Nationally, over 27,000 people died from accidental overdoses in 2007 (the most recent data available).  In NY and 16 other states, overdose is now the leading cause of accidental death, even passing car fatalities.  More Americans now die from an accidental drug overdose than from HIV/AIDS.

***

Addiction Doesn't Discriminate.

Drug misuse and addiction don't discriminate.  Addiction can take over and ruin anyone's life, whether you are a Grammy award-winning artist or someone who sings for money on the subway.  Betty Ford, Rush Limbaugh and Patrick Kennedy all remind us that addiction can touch anyone, rich or poor, left or right, famous or unknown.

People Use Drugs for Pleasure -- and to Cope with Pain.

We don't know the reasons why Amy Winehouse used drugs, or what triggered her last binge.  Some reports talk about a big fight with her boyfriend after he found out she was still in touch with her ex-husband who is behind bars.  Other coverage describes the booing and panning that she recently endured at a recent concert in Serbia, where she was unable to perform.  But what we do know is that people use drugs for both joy and for pain.  We're sure that Amy, like so many of us, had a lot of good times when partying.  On the flip side, Amy appeared to have some demons and pain that she was trying to soothe by self-medicating with drugs.

We Must End the Stigma Against People Addicted to Drugs.

We must -- and this is perhaps most important of all -- stop our barbaric stigmatization and stereotypes of people addicted to drugs.  People like Amy endure a hell we can only imagine.  The agony of being made into a ridiculous caricature, something less than human, for nothing more than our own casual amusement, is beyond what any young person should ever be forced to endure.  We targeted her, mocked her and cast her out as an irredeemable "crackhead" for nothing more than sport.  It's shameful. It's too late for Amy to hear us now, but our apologies should be sent out en masse to her and to all others like her, struggling, surviving.

History / Re: How the term THIRD WORLD came about

Four worlds

After World War II the world split into two large geopolitical blocs and spheres of influence with contrary views on government and the politically correct society:

1 - The bloc of democratic-industrial countries within the American influence sphere, the "First World".
2 - The Eastern bloc of the communist-socialist states, the "Second World".
3 - The remaining three-quarters of the world's population, states not aligned with either bloc were regarded as the "Third
     World."
4 - The term "Fourth World", coined in the early 1970s by Shuswap Chief George Manuel, refers to widely unknown nations
(cultural entities) of indigenous peoples, "First Nations" living within or across national state boundaries.

First there was the three worlds model

The origin of the terminology is unclear.  In 1952 Alfred Sauvy, a French demographer, wrote an article in the French magazine L'Observateur which ended by comparing the Third World with the Third Estate: "ce Tiers Monde ignoré, exploité, méprisé comme le Tiers État" (this ignored Third World, exploited, scorned like the Third Estate).  Other sources claim that Charles de Gaulle coined the term Third World, or maybe de Gaulle only has quoted Sauvy.

Worlds within the World?

The First, the Second, and the Third World

When people talk about the poorest countries of the world, they often refer to them with the general term Third World, and they think everybody knows what they are talking about.  But when you ask them if there is a Third World, what about a Second or a First World, you almost always get an evasive answer.

Other people even try to use the terms as a ranking scheme for the state of development of countries, with the First World on top, followed by the Second World and so on.  That's perfect nonsense.

To close the gap of information you will find here explanations of the terms.

The use of the terms First, the Second, and the Third World is a rough, and it's safe to say, outdated model of the geopolitical world from the time of the Cold War.

There is no official definition of the First, Second, and the Third World.

surprise!  surprise!---

The Three Worlds Theory developed by Chinese Communist leader Mao Zedong (1893â€"1976) posited that international relations comprise three politicoâ€"economic worlds: the First World, the superpowers, the Second World, the superpowers' allies, and the Third World, the nations of the Non-Aligned Movement.

Notably, Chairman Mao included the US and the Soviet Union in the First World group of countries.  In 1974, then Chinese Vice-Premier Deng Xiaoping (1904â€"97), explained the Three Worlds Theory in a speech to the United Nations, explaining the politico-economic alliances of the People's Republic of China with Right-wing, reactionary governments in the late 1970s and the 1980s.

The Three Worlds Theory developed by Mao Zedong was different from the Western theory of the Three Worlds.  The Western theory said that the First World was the United States and its allies, the Second World was the Soviet Union and its allies, and the Third World was the neutral and nonaligned countries.

Some anti-revisionist political parties and organizations were disillusioned by the Three Worlds Theory.  Subsequently, in Albania, Enver Hoxha (1908â€"85), leader of the Party of Labour of Albania, posited an ideological alternative, opposed to both the Three Worlds Theory and to the Communist Party of the Soviet Union’s stance.  This led to the Sino-Albanian split among communist parties previously aligned with China and Albania.

The Western Bloc or Capitalist Bloc during the Cold War refers to the powers allied with the United States and NATO against the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact.  The latter were referred to as the Eastern Bloc, a more common term in English than Western Bloc, because the governments and press of the Western Bloc were more inclined to refer to themselves as the "Free World".  (wiki)

The term Third World is a Cold War term.  It was used to refer to countries that have not aligned with either Soviet Russia (Second World or Eastern Bloc, along with its allies) or the United States of America (First World or Western Bloc, along with its allies).  So it was more of a geopolitical term than an economic one.

Police force blows £100,000 on failed search to find a helmet to cover Sikh officer's turban

By David Wilkes
16th June 2008

A police force spent £100,000 on a failed attempt to find protective headgear that fits over Sikh officers' turbans.

West Midlands Police started its search after one Sikh constable decided he wanted to join the counter-terrorist Operational Support Unit.

The man, thought to be in his mid-20s, was refused a place because he was unable to fit the necessary helmet and respirator over his turban and beard, both of which are requirements for strict adherents to his faith.

According to a police source, the unnamed constable claimed he was being discriminated against and was then assigned the task - while on full pay - of sourcing new equipment that would fit.

A helmet and respirator would be needed for certain counter terrorist operations to guard against possible chemical and biological weapons.

The officer contacted manufacturers across the world to see if they could adapt their gear but after 18 months his search ended in vain and he was restored to regular duties.

A few weeks later he is said to have gone on long-term sick leave suffering from stress.

The source, who estimated the total cost of the failed project, including the officer's wages, at £100,000, said: 'This was a shocking waste of taxpayers' cash.'

West Midlands Police today defended the decision to spend the reported £100,000, calling the figure a "gross exaggeration".

A spokeswoman said: "West Midlands Police is a diverse organisation, which both serves and recruits from a diverse community.

"No Sikh officer has applied and been turned down from joining the Operational Support Unit because of faith issues.

"However, it has been identified that for some members of the Sikh faith, the removal of the turban to wear a helmet and the wearing of a respirator could be problematic.

"As an employer committed to equality and diversity, we are working to try and find a solution to what is a national issue. This worthwhile work continues."

Turbans consist of around 15ft of cloth wound around the head.

Sikh men wear them to cover their hair, which they leave uncut in accordance with their religion. They often wear their long beards rolled up.

As well as being a sign of spirituality, the turban is also a symbol of Sikh identity and of courage.

Hmm, pwede ba kaha mag-design na lang silag helmet nga medyo dako-dako aron di na kinahanglan hus-on ang turban, doble pa ang protection...

::)

kun made of protective helmet material lang ni kintahay, moarang ba kaha ang turbaned head ani?

would it be safe to say then that it may appear that those who crafted this bill weren't too concerned with ethical matters?  or maybe the saw poverty (oh, this overused word to describe our kind, sigh) as ethical enough a reason for having fewer of us?

The second letter, from Guttmacher Institute (“RH research findings distorted,” Inquirer, 7/1/11), claims that the “pill only serves to prevent a pregnancy; it does not terminate a pregnancy.  It is blatantly false and against all scientific evidence to claim that the pill is an abortifacient.”

This letter, purposefully we think, does not tell the readers that the Institute defines pregnancy as beginning at implantation, a full 5-7 days after fertilization, when the unborn human, now called a blastocyst (not a “fertilized egg”), is made up of roughly 100 or more cells.

Since the pill does not affect an unborn child after implantation and the Institute defines pregnancy as not beginning until implantation, then they can claim the pill is not an abortifacient, but only because they refuse to define pregnancy as beginning at fertilization.

The bottom line is this: if one believes human life begins at fertilization, then good scientific data exist to demonstrate that the pill works, at times, as an abortifacient.

Furthermore, given that there are highly effective, inexpensive, totally natural, and non-abortifacient methods of birth control (the methods of modern natural family planning), it appears that most arguments for using birth control pills can be said to be advocating convenience for mothers and fathers at the potential expense of innocent and invaluable human life.

What Guttmacher failed to point out in RH

Philippine Daily Inquirer
Thursday, July 28th, 2011

THIS REFERS to two letters, published in the Inquirer, that may be confusing to readers.

The first letter, from Raul Nidoy (“Breathtaking infatuation for RH bill,” Inquirer, 5/10/11), correctly referenced our systematic review, published in the Archives of Family Medicine, in which we concluded, “that good evidence exists to support the hypothesis that the effectiveness of oral contraceptives depends to some degree on postfertilization effects” on the lining of the uterus (endometrium).

This fact is now so well-established in medical literature that the United States Food and Drug Administration says of the pill: “Although the primary mechanism of action is inhibition of ovulation, other alterations include… changes in the endometrium which reduce the likelihood of implantation.”

The American Society for Reproductive Medicine also admits that the pill modifies “the endometrium, thus preventing implantation.”

If a woman on the pill has a breakthrough ovulation, the pill-caused changes in the endometrium will increase the chance of an unrecognized, pill-induced loss of a preborn human.

For those who believe that human life begins at fertilization, then any pill-caused post-fertilization loss of life would be, by definition, an abortifacient.

Postscript:  In view of all the facts and existing applicable law, the likelihood is that the UN court will find China’s petition to be without merit.

Notwithstanding requests from the Philippines, neighboring countries and the United States to bring West Philippine Sea sovereignty issues to the United Nations, China has steadfastly refused to do so.  Instead, it is constantly involved in mind games, using scare tactics, insisting that everything in the whole West Philippine Sea is theirs and that this issue is non-negotiable.

By so doing, the gigantic oil hungry dragon seeks to condition the national minds of her neighbors to forcibly accept inequitable bilateral settlement agreements â€" without United Nations or United States involvement.  The Philippines, Vietnam and other neighbor countries must not fall into this trap.  They should unite and create an alliance and insist â€" with the aid of the global community, with military means if necessary â€" that China should respect their rights and leave their national patrimony alone.

The most loudly applauded part of President Benigno Simeon Aquino’s State of the Nation speech was his strong affirmation that what belongs to the Philippines stays in the Philippines.  Everyone understood his meaning:  The Philippines will stand firm against China’s bully tactics and mind games in trying to grab our energy and marine resources.

What a big difference to have a trustworthy President who provides moral leadership and looks after the interests of the nation instead of one ready to sell out the country’s patrimony for personal gain.

Judge: “You are then aware Mr. Lee that at its height, the Roman Empire included most of Europe and parts of Africa and Asia.”

Mr. Lee: “I am aware, your honor.”

Judge: “Now Mr. Lee, since the time of Alexander, the Roman Empire and the Han Dynasty â€" through the course of time and historical events, various  independent countries have emerged in Europe, Africa and Asia â€" which now have their own respective territories.  This is a reality which  we all have to accept, wouldn’t you say?”

Mr. Lee: “We cannot deny reality, your honor.”

Judge: “Now Mr. Lee, another undeniable reality is that Alexander’s empire, the Roman empire and the Han Dynasty kingdom are no longer existent â€" am I correct in my observation?

Mr. Lee: “You are correct, your honor.”

Judge: “Now Mr.Lee, in all candor, do you seriously believe that if the Republic of Macedonia and the Italian government were to come before this Court and petition us to affirm that they own the territories of these now independent  countries because they were once a part of Alexander’s empire or the Roman empire â€" that we would be persuaded to grant these petitions?”

Mr. Lee: “I understand what you are getting at, Judge â€" but most of what we are claiming as ours is marine area and not land.”

Judge: “The Spratlys and the Paracel islands are not land?  Anyway, isn’t it a fact that China is a signatory to the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) which she ratified on July 6, 1996 thereby agreeing to be bound by its provisions â€" and part of which is that anything within 200 miles from the baseline of a country belongs to that country?

Mr. Lee: “China did agree to those provisions at a time when it was not yet aware of the far reaching consequences of UNCLOS to her national interests.”

Judge: “I will not mince my words Mr. Lee.  What you mean is that at that time, the world, including China, was not yet aware, that vast deposits of oil and natural gas were to be found within the territorial limits of neighboring countries.  Now because of this awareness, even if China knows she is trespassing and violating international law, she is using the coercive might of her size, military or otherwise â€" to grab these enormous reserves of petrowealth from the territories of her smaller, weaker, poorer neighbors â€" who badly need these assets to improve the plight of their own people."

Judge: “How do you intend to prove your case?”

Mr. Lee: “I will present to this Court an almost two thousand year old Han Dynasty map that indicates the limits of the Han Dynasty kingdom.”

Judge: “Let’s  assume for purposes of discussion  that  the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei and other surrounding countries were provinces or part of the Han Dynasty during its time even if the map you hold may just actually be a navigational map which does not really define the limits of the Han Dynasty.  Now  my study of China’s history indicate that the Han Dynasty lasted from 206 B.C. To 220 A.D.  Is this correct?”

Mr. Lee: “Yes your honor.”

Judge: “I  assume Mr. Lee that you are familiar with Alexander the Great, the young Macedonian king who conquered much of the ancient world.”

Mr. Lee: “I am, your honor.”

Judge: “At the time of his death in 323 B.C., Alexander’s kingdom included Greece, Syria, Persia now known as Iran, Egypt and a part of India.  Are you aware Mr. Lee that Macedonia, Alexander’s country â€" is now known as the Republic of Macedonia?”

Mr. Lee: “If you say so your honor.”

Judge: “Good!  You appear to know your history.  I assume you are also familiar with the Roman Empire which existed for over a thousand years.”

Mr. Lee: “Thank you your honor, I do read history.”

Why China will not bring the Spratlys issue to the United Nations

from No Limitations
By Ted Laguatan
INQUIRER.net
Wednesday, July 27th, 2011

Based on applicable international maritime and related laws, China knows that if she petitions the United Nations International Court of Justice or the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea to affirm  her dubious claim that she owns everything in the South China Sea aka West Philippine Sea â€" her chances of winning are about as likely as having a snowfall in the Sahara desert.

Both Courts have proper jurisdictions to settle sovereignty issues between nations  regarding marine territories â€" such as those concerning the Spratly and Paracel islands.

Let’s imagine  what most likely would happen if  China does take her case to the International Court of Justice  and the representative of China â€" let’s call him Mr. Lee â€" is before the Court headed by the Presiding Judge.  Consider this scenario:

Judge:  â€œPlease inform this Court of the basis  for your claim that the entire South China Sea aka West Philippine Sea belongs completely to the People’s Republic of China?”

Mr. Lee: “Thank you, your honor.  Our claim  is based on the historical fact that this entire area has belonged to us since the Han Dynasty.”

until they are caught, wherever they are now, i am sending to them my favorite irish curses:

Let the cat eat them and the devil eat the cat.

May they have neither meat nor soup.

May the lamb of God stir his hoof through the roof of heaven and kick them in the arse down to hell.

May they be eaten by an awful itch!

May all the goats in Gorey chase them to hell.

May they find the bees but miss the honey!

May the curse of Mary Malone and her nine blind illegitimate children chase them so far over the Hills of Damnation that the Lord himself can't find them with a telescope.

today, 28 july 2011, i came across an internet article in the philippine daily inquirer about the offer of a hundred thousand pesos by PETA for information on the whereabouts of this perverted couple.  i don't have the strength to post that article here.  it shows a dead dog, presumably after having been tortured to death.  i couldn't even finish reading that article because i can no longer read the letters with the sting in my eyes.

aahh, tears.  you ease one's sorrow but your wellspring is for an eternity.  let me mourn for some humans who don't deserve to share the earth with animals.

because there are just some things that i simply refuse to believe or to admit as real, i guess i will open this thread again only when that couple is caught.

Most people think that it is dangerous to risk your life to save a human, and it is straight out nuts to risk your life for an animal, but not SmART!  Nav did some poking around and found a company willing to provide the training.  They were even willing to bring a portion of the class to ....Los Angeles.....

i rarely bathe a cat.  besides, even if i did, i just have too many, i doubt if i could catch up, scratches on my skin notwithstanding.

should bathing a cat be necessary, drying it at once is urgent.  towel drying followed by blow drying is ideal; it should not in any way be exposed to cold drafts when wet because cats are very susceptible to fatal feline pneumonia.

cats are the cleanest animals, whether we bathe them or not.  they clean themselves daily, most of the time, with their efficient tongue.
