MRT-3 PRESS STATEMENT
On 1 June 2022, we received reports of a passenger build-up observed at the stairway and footbridge area of Ortigas Ave. station. Based on initial reports, this was due to a defective escalator being closed to the public for safety reasons.

During normal operations, the escalator is used as access of MRT-3 passengers, bus passengers, and passers-by going to and from nearby malls, while the stairway is used by exiting MRT-3 passengers. The closure of the escalator resulted in a single entry and exit at the northbound stairway of the mix of passengers and passers-by.

The narrow walkway at the street-level area contributed to the build-up as only one person can walk through at a time. However, no long queues were observed inside the MRT-3 platform and concourse area.

MRT-3 stations and security personnel immediately implemented a "stop-and-go" scheme to control and manage the crowd. The technicians from the subcontractor of MRT-3's maintenance provider who were earlier alerted of the situation arrived at the station to troubleshoot and repair the escalator. Passenger flow was also normalized at around 9:30AM.

We extend our deepest apologies to all our passengers who were inconvenienced by the incident. We assure the public that we will take all the necessary steps, such as deployment of stand-by technicians, and close coordination with the Road Sector in crowd management, to prevent this incident from happening again.

Lost Bautista Mine:
It was in the 1860's that a wealthy Mexican land owner names Juan Bautista Alvarado traveled from California to re settle in the Gila River Valley. It is stated in many places that Juan was a very kind and generous man, giving all he could to anyone who was in need and in any circumstances.

One local Apache band was quite common to be found on Juan Bautista's land since both lands boarded one another's. Juan Bautista Alvarado quickly befriended the local Apache band and their chief and they became close friends. Juan would help give the Apache medical aid, gun powder, food, presents to any Apache children who would bring in fodder for his horses.

After a time, the Apache Chief decided to bring Juan a gift of his own. He rode up to Juan's ranch with several warriors, women and children. The chief instructed one of the children to give their friend a gift, as he had done so often to them. The child handed Juan three pieces of rust quartz laced with rich gold!!!!!

The chief then said that he and his men will take him to the source and that he may take what ever he wanted, as a gift for his rare kindness and generosity. Juan thanked the chief, saddled up his horse and off the men rode deep into the Little Horn Mountains until they came to what is said a "Ledge that was red in color as that of rust on a blade, and everywhere along the ledge was gold laced ore".

Juan filled everything he could, saddle bags, food pouch, even his own hat he filled with gold ore that he could pry out with the use of his knife and other rocks. He then noticed that there was actually a small mine there, where the Spanish had been working just a half century before. He went inside the entrance and found a pile of processed ore that was ready for smelting and then took off his jacket and proceeded to tie the wrist holes up and began to fill the sleeves with the gold. He sealed the entrance with a crude rock wall before he and the Apache departed the site.

He returned home a very happy man and with over 150lbs Of rich gold barring ore. Sadly Juan was never able to return to the location of the rich gold ledge because of his age and rapidly declining health. He passed before he could give clear directions to his family as to the location of his mine. To this day the mine has never been relocated and is still waiting to be found.

The Little Horn Mountains are just east of the Kofa National Refuge and straddles Both Yuma and La Paz county lines.

143 years ago today in 1879, Prince Imperial Napoléon IV, heir to the Bonaparte monarchy is killed during the Anglo-Zulu War.

Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte was born in Paris during the Second French Empire. His father Charles-Louis Napoléon Bonaparte was the nephew of Napoléon Bonaparte and seized power in 1852 anointing himself Emperor as Napoléon III. The Second French Empire under his leadership doubled the size of its overseas empire and repaired relations with Great Britain. However in July 1870 Napoléon III would enter into a war with Prussia with no allies and an inferior army. He would be captured in battle and Paris would abandon him declaring the Third Republic of France. The Bonaparte family would go into exile in England where the young Prince Imperial Napoléon IV would receive military training.

The young Prince was beloved and popular within political elite circles. He was a serious contender to marry one of Queen Victoria's daughters, but the Prince first desired to experience military action. After applying great pressure he would get the opportunity to travel to South Africa and assist the British in their ongoing war with the Zulu people. He was attached to the staff of a Colonel in the Royal Engineers but the Prince's eagerness for action found him volunteering to go along with reconnaissance missions as often as he could. Concerned for his safety, the British assigned personal guards to protect the young reckless Prince.

On the morning of June 1st the Prince insisted the reconnaissance mission planned for that day go earlier without full strength. The party dismounted and was resting in an abandoned Zulu village when suddenly 40 Zulu warriors ambushed them. The men escorting the Prince mounted their horses and did not attempt to fight, fleeing for their lives. Napoléon's horse was spooked and began to run off before he could be fully mounted in the saddle. The Prince held onto a strap as the horse carried him to safety but the strap broke and the horse ran off with his carbine and a sword that belonged to Napoléon I.  His right arm was trampled and he pulled out a revolver with his left hand and began to run away, but four Zulu warriors rushed the Prince and one of their assegai was thrown through his leg. The Prince pulled the assegai from his leg and tried to fight with it using his trampled arm while shooting at the oncoming Zulus. He was overwhelmed and killed, and when his body was recovered it had 18 assegai wounds.

The Prince's death sent shockwaves throughout England and France. He was only 23 years old and buried next to his father. His grieving mother made a pilgrimage to the location he was killed. And the best chance for a restoration of the Bonapartist Monarchy had died with him.

Philippine Army reservists deliver supplies to Taal volcano victims

The Reserve Command, Philippine Army (RCPA), through 401st Community Defense Center (CDC) and 402CDC of the 4th Regional Community Defense Group (RCDG) distributed aid and school supplies for children who were displaced by the most recent eruption of Taal in Barangay Banyaga, Agoncillo, Batangas last May 29, 2022.

RCPA through 401CDC and 402CDC of the 4th RCDG, distributed 722 food packs; 1,847 hygiene kits; and 1,300 school supply packs for the displaced children. It can be recalled that the most recent eruption of Taal last March 26, 2022 prompted the evacuation of around 600 families from at least six villages in Agoncillo and Laurel towns in Batangas.

Army Commanding General Lt. Gen. Romeo S. Brawner, Jr., lauded Army reservists for their benevolent act to help the displaced families as they gradually return to their normal lives.
"Rest assured that your Headquarters Philippine Army is here to serve you. We will support you in all of your endeavors," the CGPA said in his recent visit at headquarters RCPA.

On This Day - May 30, 1806, future President and former Revolutionary War Patriot Andrew Jackson fought and won a duel with a man who made slanderous comments about Jackson's wife. Born in the border region between North and South Carolina in 1767, Jackson was very young when he joined up with the Patriots to fight against the British in the Carolinas. He served as a courier for the Americans but was captured soon after the Battle of Hanging Rock. In a now famous incident, while in captivity, a British officer ordered the young Jackson to clean his boots.

Jackson insolently refused and the officer slashed the boy with his sword, leaving him with a scar and a burning hatred of the British that would last for the rest of his life. Following the war, Jackson headed west to Tennessee where he gained just enough legal knowledge to become a frontier lawyer. In the coming years, Jackson served in many a legal position throughout Tennessee before making the jump to State Representative and then Senator following Tennessee's statehood. It was about this time that Charles Dickinson published an article in a newspaper in which he talked slanderously about Jackson's marriage to his wife Rachel. The two had married before Rachel's divorce with her previous husband was technically finalized, as her husband had simply abandoned her.

The controversy over his marriage became a sore point for Jackson over the years, and when Dickinson talked about it in a newspaper, he crossed a line from which there was no way back with Jackson. Jackson challenged Dickinson to a duel and Dickinson accepted. The two then journeyed to Kentucky where unlike Tennessee, dueling was legal. Jackson resolved to let Dickinson fire first as Dickinson was an expert shot and his aim might be ruined with quickness. With their seconds watching to make sure no one tried to cheat, the two walked a set number of paces from each other, turned, and prepared to fire. Just like Jackson thought, Dickinson fired first, with his bullet striking Jackson in the chest. With his gun now empty, Dickinson was forced by dueling rules to stand perfectly still while Jackson fired. He slowly brought up his pistol, cocked the hammer, and fired with deadly accuracy, killing Dickinson. Jackson himself was severely hurt by Dickinson's bullet which had passed just inches from his heart, and doctors tried to operate and remove the bullet, but nothing could be done. The bullet stayed with Jackson for the rest of his life, causing him chronic pain.

History / Alexander Pope Among Greatest Poets
June 01, 2022, 11:54:41 AM
Although he was a brilliant student and scholar, life seemed to offer little opportunity for Alexander Pope. Because he and his family were Catholics, English law at the time prohibited him from teaching, attending a university, or holding any public office. Added to those social disabilities, at age 12 Pope contracted a form of tuberculosis that left him with lifelong respiratory problems and debilitating headaches, as well as a deformed spine that caused him to have a severe hunchback and grow to be only 4 foot 6 inches tall.

Notwithstanding these challenges, Alexander Pope achieved fame and is today regarded as one of the greatest English poets.

Primarily self-taught, Pope began writing his "Pastorals" poems when he was sixteen years old and by the time they were published in 1709 they had already become known and widely admired in literary circles. In 1711, at age 23 he published "An Essay on Criticism," a poem in which he coined phrases still in use today: "To err is human; to forgive, divine," "A little learning is a dangerous thing," and "Fools rush in where angels fear to tread."

After the financial success of his translations of the Iliad and the Odyssey, in 1719 Pope purchased a villa, whose gardens and grotto made it a popular subject for 18th century paintings. There Pope lived the rest of his days, writing and entertaining a steady stream of celebrities and artists. He died at the villa at age 56, on May 30, 1744 (two hundred seventy-eight years ago today), having never married. In the Oxford Dictionary of Quotations, only Shakespeare is quoted more than Alexander Pope.

History / Cornelius Vanderbilt Business Genius
June 01, 2022, 09:16:21 AM
Cornelius Vanderbilt had no education, could barely spell, and was reputed to know no math beyond the most basic arithmetic. But what he lacked in education he made up with business acumen. A ruthless competitor, he acquired a huge fortune in the railroad and shipping business, becoming one of the wealthiest men in American history. His net worth in today's dollars would be over $215 billion.

In 1872 Vanderbilt donated $1 million, a massive sum at the time, to the newly founded Central University of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, in Nashville. At the time it was made, it was the largest charitable gift in American history. In appreciation the school renamed itself "Vanderbilt University." During his life Vanderbilt was referred to as "the Commodore," which explains the origin of the school's mascot and sports-team nickname "the Commodores."

Vanderbilt well encapsulated his philosophy when he said, "The public good consists in every individual pursuing his own interest as aggressively as possible."

Cornelius Vanderbilt was born on Staten Island, New York on May 27, 1794, two hundred twenty-eight years ago today.

History / Thomas Jefferson Writes to John Adams
June 01, 2022, 09:07:39 AM
On this day in history 1813, Thomas Jefferson wrote to his friend, and former rival, John Adams to inform him of their mutual friend's death. This friend, Dr. Benjamin Rush, had brokered a peace between the former friends in 1812, and died only a year later. Jefferson and Adams became rivals leading up to the presidential election of 1800, Jefferson then becoming President. In Jefferson's letter he discusses how few men were still alive that had signed the Declaration of Independence.

These two men were so connected in life that they died on the same day, 4 July 1826, within hours of each other.

May 31, 1764, the Spaniards led by Spanish Governor-General Simon de Anda y Salazar and his troops took back Manila from the British following the signing of peace treaty at Paris, ending the British occupation of Manila.

Spain and England, two traditional rivals in global colonization in the 18th century, came to be involved in the raging Seven Years' War in Europe. In the course of this massive conflict which also involved other powers (Austria, France, Prussia, Holland, Hungary, and Czarist Russia), Charles III, Bourbon king of Spain signed a dynamic alliance at Versailles on August 25, 1761, known as the "Family Compact," in which he agreed to help his kinsman, Louis XV, Bourbon king of France in the war against England. In retaliation, the King of the United Kingdom, King George III, an enemy of France, declared war on Spain on January 2, 1762, and prepared the British expeditionary forces to attack the Spanish colonies in the Americas and the Orient.

Thus, war erupted between Spain and England. This war was a part of the Seven Years' War in Europe, which also spread to North America, where the British under Robert Clive clashed with the French led by Marquis Joseph Dupleix.

Upon King George III's orders, a British Expeditionary Force was prepared by the East India Company at Madras, India. The troops numbered 6,830 consisting of 1,500 European soldiers, 3,000 European seamen and marines, two artillery companies, 600 Sepoys, and 1,400 Indian laborers. The commander of the fleet was Admiral Samuel Cornish, while Lieutenant General William Draper was in command of the troops.

On the evening of September 22, 1762, the British fleet entered Manila bay. The Spanish authorities and city residents saw through the early night darkness the strange ships entering Manila Bay and mistook them for Chinese trade junks. They were woefully unaware that war had come between Spain and England, for they had not received any war news from Madrid due to the difficulty of overseas communications in those days.

The following morning (September 23, 1762), two British officers were sent ashore under a white flag or truce carrying an ultimatum to the Spanish authorities demanding the surrender of Manila.

The Mexican Archbishop of Manila, Manuel Antonio Rojo, who was then acting governor general of the Philippines, was both surprised and alarmed to read the ultimatum message. Upon the advice of the council of war which he hurriedly convoked, he rejected the invaders' ultimatum with a proud reply that the "Spaniards know how to die like true men for their God, for their king, and their fatherland, and they never surrender in the face of danger."

By nightfall, despite the lashing rain and howling wind, the British forces landed and occupied the powder works outside the city walls and the stone churches of Malate, Ermita, and Bagumbayan (Luneta). The city defenders offered no resistance.

The following morning, September 24, 1762, the siege of Manila began. The British batteries shelled the city. The Spanish guns fired in retaliation, a strong Spanish-Filipino force under the command of Cesar Fallet (Fayette), a French soldier of fortune in Spain's service, sallied out of the city gates and assaulted the British lines. The fight raged furiously all night. The British and their Sepoy allies stood their ground and repulsed the attack.

On September 25, 1762, General Draper repeated his demand for surrender, and again Archbishop Rojo turned it down. Within the city walls, Filipinos and Spaniards rushed the construction of defense works. Notwithstanding their inadequate arms, they were determined to resist the invaders.

Rising in response to Spain's cry for aid, thousands of Filipino warriors from Pampanga, Bulacan, and Laguna reinforced the city garrison. On the rainy dawn of October 3, 1762, they audaciously assaulted the British posts at Bagumbayan and Malate. They enraged the invaders in a bloody hand-to-hand fight, almost annihilating the enemy. The timely arrival of fresh troops, hurriedly dispatched by General Draper, saved the day for England. Outnumbered and outarmed, the Filipinos were forced to fall back to the city.

The Filipino sorties, although foiled, were highly significant. It proved the loyalty of the Filipinos to Spain and to Catholicism. It demonstrated their fighting prowess and indomitable spirit.

Realizing the grave situation, Archbishop Rojo called a council of war; the council discussed the course of action that they should follow. The military officers, mostly Mexicans, favored surrender because of the fatality of further resistance. To put a stop to the horrible slaughter of the city defenders and residents, Archbishop Rojo hoisted the white flag at Fort Santiago, as the signal of the surrender of the city. Thus, Manila fell into British hands on October 5, 1762.

Simón de Anda y Salazar (officially became Governor-General 1770–1776 died while in office), escaped from Manila with much of the treasury and documents, assumed full authority on behalf of the Real Audiencia of Manila, established the provisional government and raised an army in Bulacan (later Pampanga), and re-continued the military campaign against the British. Anda continued the government, with himself as the governor general. He organized an army of Filipinos and Spaniards, and dispatched swift couriers to all parts of the country, urging the people to resist the invaders in the name of God and of the Spanish king. Later, Anda's army grew in number of fighting men because hundreds of Filipino warriors rallied around his war banner.

On November 2, 1762, less than a month after occupying Manila, the East India Company (based in Madras, India) established a civil government in Manila, headed by Governor-General Dawsonne Drake (1st British Governor-General of the Philippines; Governor of Manila, November 2, 1762–May 31, 1764) and assisted by the Manila Council (composed of British men). As British Governor of Manila, Drake exercised the executive power, and the Manila Council, the legislative powers. Shortly after the organization of the civil government, General Draper and Admiral Cornish returned to Madras, leaving the British land and sea forces behind to support the rule of the East India Company in the Philippines. Governor Drake tried to crush Anda's resistance, but failed. With the loyalty and support of the Filipino people. Anda remained victorious in the provinces. Unable to liquidate Anda by arms, Governor Drake and the Manila Council issued a proclamation on January 23, 1763, declaring Anda a rebel and offered a reward on his head, dead or alive. In reply, Anda issued a counter edict offering a reward for each of the heads of Drake and the members of the Manila Council.

While Anda and the British were fighting in the Philippines, the Seven Years' War in Europe came to a close. The Treaty of Paris, which concluded the war, was signed on February 10, 1763. By this treaty, England restored the Philippines to Spain. Owing to the poor means of communication during that time, the news reached Manila at a much later date. Archbishop Rojo had died in the meantime, on January 30, 1764. Four months later, May 31, 1764, Anda and his troops made their triumphal entry into Manila amidst the vivas of the populace, the salutes of guns, and the strains of music. Shortly afterward, the British sailed away, ending an occupation of one year and a half.

CGPA lauds reservists' role in disaster response missions

Commanding General Philippine Army (CGPA) Lt. Gen. Romeo S. Brawner, Jr., commended the crucial role of reservists in disaster response efforts in his visit to the Reserve Command, Philippine Army (RCPA) Headquarters, Camp Riego de Dios, Tanza, Cavite on May 27, 2022.

In his traditional "Talk to Troops," Lt. Gen. Brawner assured the RCPA headquarters and its line units which include Regional Community Defense Groups and Community Defense Centers of ample support. The CGPA underscored the Army leadership's support to RCPA in terms of personnel, logistics, and fuel requirements as well as facilities improvement.

The CGPA lauded Army reservists for playing a crucial role in the relief and rescue efforts that saved lives in the aftermath of calamities, particularly in the aftermath of Typhoon "Odette" late last year and Tropical Storm "Agaton" last month.

The Army chief likewise highlighted the need to strengthen the country's reserve force to bolster the country's defense readiness posture. He reiterated AFP Chief of Staff Gen. Andres C. Centino's directive to fully utilize reservists in civil-military operations such as bloodletting and tree-planting activities.

In 1948, China was on the brink of a total invasion by the Communists led by Mao-Tse-Tung. For this reason, Russian emigrants living in Peking, Hankow, Tiensin, and other nearby cities in northern China were forced to evacuate to Shanghai. However, they were aware that the Communist army would eventually take over the rest of China, so they had to move somewhere else or they would end up dying in Russian labor camps.

This is when the International Refugee Organization (IRO), the forerunner of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNCHR) came to the rescue. They knew the danger that might ensue so they asked help from other countries to provide temporary shelter for the "White Russians."

These "White Russians" were named after the color of the tsarist court and the Russian soldiers' uniforms. If you can recall your world history, the "White Russians" were opposed to the Communist regime (i.e. the "Red Russians") who went against the Tsar during the 1917 Bolshevic revolution. The conflict resulted in a civil war, forcing the White Russians to transfer to other countries including China.

Going back to IRO, no country had responded to their plea for fear of China. They were about to lose hope when the Philippines under President Elpidio Quirino agreed to convert the small island of Tubabao in Guian, Eastern Samar as a Russian refugee camp.  In 1949, about 5, 000 to 6, 000 White Russians finally arrived in the country and settled in Tubabao for about 27 months.

The Russian Refugee Camp was divided into 14 districts and the White Russians who stayed there had their own hospital, electricity, churches, as well as a cemetery. After more than 2 years on the island, most of the refugees were eventually admitted to other countries like France, Australia, and the United States.

Today in History by Indio Historian
This day in 1898, six days after Emilio Aguinaldo's return to the Philippines, the U.S. expeditionary force (Eighth Army Corps) led by Brig. Gen. Thomas McArthur Anderson left San Francisco, for Manila to engage the Spanish forces in the Philippines during the Spanish-American War.

More than three weeks prior, on May 1, U.S. Adm. George Dewey defeated the Spanish navy in the Battle of Manila Bay. The admiral was the one who initiated the return of Aguinaldo to the Philippines for Filipino revolutionary forces to engage the Spaniards on land.

Dewey promised Aguinaldo verbally that the U.S. had no desire to conquer the islands, and that it would respect the Filipino people's will to independence. Mabini, upon learning of this on June 12, 1898, had foresight that since there's no signed agreement on this, it was not binding.

In San Francisco, California, U.S. troops boarded three ships—the SS Australia, SS City of Sydney, and the SS City of Peking. Upon reaching the Philippines, these were the first of the American forces to have landed. The uncertainty of the situation bought Americans some time to amass forces.

Even when Filipinos declared independence from Spain on June 12, 1898, and Filipino forces had Manila (Intramuros) surrounded, Americans secretly negotiated with the Spaniards to stage a battle on August 13, 1898, and transfer the city's control to the U.S.

Filipinos became suspicious as U.S. forces forbade Filipino troops to enter the city, while U.S. reinforcements kept on arriving. Aguinaldo transferred his capital to Malolos, safe from possible bombings coming from Manila Bay. It was a race against time as the nascent republic sought international recognition from other states, while pursuing a seat in the negotiations between Spain and the U.S., while a Revolutionary Congress was convened to show the people's support of the republic being established.

The Treaty of Paris between Spain and the U.S. was signed on December 10, 1898. The deal ceded Spanish control of the Philippines to the U.S., triggering a protest manifesto from Malolos. The tensions led to the outbreak of Philippine-American War on February 4, 1899, with the first gunshot fired by Pvt. W. Grayson.

WORLD'S OLDEST TREE? via Rappler.com
LOOK: A lush green forest in southern Chile might be home to the world's oldest tree after a new study found that an ancient alerce tree known as "great grandfather" could be more than 5,000 years old.

Jonathan Barichivich, the scientist who led the study, says the sample they extracted and other dating methods suggest that the ancient alerce tree is up to 5,484 years old.

The estimated age would beat the current record-holder, a 4,853 year old bristlecone pine tree in California, by more than half a millennium.

Philippine Flag History
DID YOU KNOW? | The Philippine Flag was first unfurled on May 28, 1898 after the Philippine Revolutionary Army's victory against the Spanish forces in Cavite.

After the Philippine Revolutionary Army's victory against the Spanish forces during the Battle of Alapan in Imus, Cavite, Gen. Aguinaldo first unfurled the Philippine flag on May 28, 1898 in Cavite while cheering for independence. Fifteen days later, he formally presented the same flag in Kawit, Cavite and declared the Philippine's independence from the Spanish forces.

The original flag design contains symbolic elements. The white triangle represents liberty and equality; the color blue symbolizes peace, justice, and truth; and the color red symbolizes bravery, courage, and patriotism. The three stars represent the three major island of the Philippines - Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao; while the yellow sun symbolizes freedom, unity, democracy, and sovereignty. The eight rays of the sun are in honor of the eight provinces; Nueva Ecija, Manila, Pampanga, Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, and Bataan; the first eight provinces started the revolt against the Spaniards colonization to the Philippines.

On March 6, 1965, the Presidential Proclamation No. 374 was issued declaring May 28 as the National Flag Day. According to Executive Order No. 179, the flag is to be permanently displayed by all government offices, businesses, educational institutions and private residences from May 28 to June 12 in celebration of the event.  #

On May 26, 1859, Felipe Agoncillo was born in Batangas. Regarded as the first Filipino diplomat to officially represent the Philippines in the United States, he finished law at the University of Santo Tomas in 1879. After which, he offered free legal services to the poor, eventually assuming the post of fiscal of Batangas in 1885, and member of the advisory council to the Spanish governor general in 1894.

Warned of being implicated and sent to exile, Agoncillo left the Philippines for Japan before reaching Hong Kong, where he would meet Emilio Aguinaldo and the Filipino leaders who were exiled due to the provisions of the Pact of Biak-na-Bato in 1897. During their time in exile, Agoncillo recommended key figures in the later Aguinaldo government, including fellow Batangueño Apolinario Mabini.

When he was assigned to the United States with Sixto Lopez, he was shut out of the negotiations leading to the Treaty of Paris between the US and Spain, despite having unofficial audience with United States President William McKinley. Enduring media attacks and even an assassination attempt, Agoncillo continued his diplomatic work, to the point of using his own money to finance their activities. He was nonetheless convinced that anything short of Philippine independence would spark a war. To avoid conflict between their nation, Agoncillo believed US recognition of the republic would be the solution, but the US government did not share his views.

Agoncillo was also known to be a proponent of forming a "provisional federal" type of government for the new Filipino republic, as well as the strengthening of local and provincial governments to uphold morality and integrity in public administration.

After the Filipino-American War, he returned to the Philippines and was elected Batangas representative in 1907. He also served as Interior Secretary from 1923 to 1925. Agoncillo also continued offering his legal services to the poor. He died on September 28, 1941 in Manila due to pneumonia.

History / Suppression of the Commune of Paris
May 28, 2022, 01:32:21 AM
Today in 1871, Republican French soldiers enter Paris and start the brutal suppression of the "Commune of Paris. "

The Commune was a radical Marxist-influenced government that ruled Paris from March 18 to May 28, 1871 and attempted a nationwide revolution. Following the collapse of the 2nd French Empire as consequence of the French Emperor's surrender at the Battle of Sedan and the following victory by the German coalition in the Franco-Prussian War, the Third French Republic was declared.

Left-wing activists in France were worried that the royalist majority in the new government would reinstitute the monarchy. Fearing a counter-revolution, the Republic disbanded the National Guard of Paris (comprised mostly of workers) and remove cannons from the city. A popular resistance to this move resulted in elections citywide. A revolutionary majority was elected as result, the majority would be referred to as the Communards.

The Paris Commune wanted to control a nationwide revolution, much like Jacobin revolutionaries did in the 1790s. In other French cities, communes were suppressed quickly and on May 21st, soldiers entered through an undefended section of Paris. Within a week, brutal fighting left nearly 17,000 men, women and children dead throughout Paris. In the aftermath of the Commune, the republican government took harsh repressive action: about 38,000 people were arrested and more than 7,000 were deported from the country.

As severe as these repressions were, many in Europe then and now, viewed the Paris Commune as a proto-communist government. Many at the time knew Marx was the intellectual behind the movement leading to the commune's creation; during its short existence he was hounded by reporters for his thoughts on the events in France. Karl Marx went as far as declaring the commune as an example of the worker's revolution and publishing two manifestos praising it. In possibly staving off a communist revolution, France may have saved herself, but in doing so led Marxist revolutionaries across Europe to accept violent revolution as the only means to secure power.

READ: Excerpts from the article, "With transition to Marcos gov't, DOTr gives rundown of railway projects status" written and published by the ABS-CBN news, 26 May 2022.

"Weeks before the Duterte administration ends, MRT, PNR, LRT administrations gave a list of developments the public can expect and the incoming administration may continue under the Build, Build, Build program."

"Some of them will be delivered before June 30, while some are poised to be continued by the incoming Marcos administration."

WHAT TO EXPECT ON/ BEFORE JUNE 30

"Good news to passengers of MRT-3 – free rides are extended until June 30."

"This aims to continue helping our commuters ease the financial burden dahil sa taas ng ating inflation and rising fuel prices," MRT-3 General Manager Michael Capati said in a virtual press conference Wednesday.

ONGOING RAIL PROJECTS

"According to the DOTr, some of the projects that are still in the works include LRT 2 West Extension, Mindanao Railway Project, MRT 4 and Subic Clark Railway."

"For LRT-2 West Extension ... We have already awarded the consultancy contract for this. The design built for the contractor, we have already prepared the designs, the bidding documents are actually ready and we are just working on some internal compliance requirements and documentation with the DBM and we are expecting to publish this within the year for the contractor's contract package," DOTr Undersecretary for Railways TJ Batan said.

CONTINUITY

"The DOTr hopes that the incoming Marcos administration will continue the projects started by the outgoing president."

"We give deference to the new administration, their projects and program priorities but at least what we will try to do is to transition these projects the best we can... so that the decision can be made by the next administration accordingly," he said."

General Topic / Greek Colonies in Black Sea
May 27, 2022, 08:26:23 PM
Greek colonies along the north coast of the Black Sea in the 5th century B.C.

Greek city-states first established colonies along the Black Sea coast of Crimea in the 7th or 6th century B.C.

According to Greek mythology, Crimea is the place to which Iphigeneia was sent after the goddess Artemis rescued her from the human sacrifice her father was about to perform.

Artemis swept the young princess off to the peninsula, where she became a priestess at her temple.

Here, she was forced by the Taurian king Thoas to perform human sacrifices on any foreigners who came ashore.

The land of Tauris and its rumored customs of killing Greeks are also described by Herodotus in his histories.

Philippine Army's HADR unit sharpens skills

The 525th Engineer Combat "Mandirigtas" Battalion of 51st Engineer Brigade facilitated a first aid and emergency & disaster preparedness training to the Colegio San Agustin (CSA) community at the school's gymnasium as a part of the unit's capacity-building program in Biñan City, Laguna last May 24, 2022.

The training activity is geared at educating and assessing the readiness of the CSA community members in mitigating and/or preventing casualties and property damage in the wake of calamities or disasters.

In a related development, Mandirigtas troopers conducted rope rescue drills in Fort Bonifacio, Metro Manila on May 20, 2022. The drill is geared at equipping soldier-rescuers with "operational level" knowledge and skills in various rope rescue disciplines, which include underwater and low-angle rescue.

The said activities are in line with Army Commanding General Lt. Gen. Romeo S. Brawner, Jr.'s thrust to enhance the individual skills of soldiers and upgrade unit capabilities to bolster their mission-effectiveness.

#OnThisDay May 26, 1609, during the early period of the Spanish colonial rule in the Philippines, a law was passed that regulates the services of the Filipino natives by prioritizing the hiring of Chinese and Japanese for public works; and the Filipino natives should be expected to work voluntarily.

The Augustinian Recollects attempted to thwart this order by later asking the king (via letter dated June 30, 1610) that they be released from such restrictions, and claiming that such law would ruin their work in the archipelago. Later on, the king of Spain granted the request of the Recollects.

Philippine relations with the Chinese and Japanese, which began during pre-Magellanic times, continued throughout the Spanish period. At the beginning of their rule, the Spanish authorities cultivated the goodwill and friendship of both Chinese and Japanese in order to retain their valuable economic services and to preserve Manila's lucrative trade with China and Japan. However, distrust and suspicion marred the Spanish policy. At various times, the Philippines was rocked by Chinese and Japanese uprisings, which were suppressed at the heavy cost of many human lives and much property damage.

During the Spanish times, the Chinese were called Sangleys. The term was derived from xiang and ley; the two words combined means "traveling merchant." The early Spaniards asked the Chinese traders in Manila who they were, and the latter replied: "Xiangley." The Spaniards, not knowing the Chinese language, thought that the term applied to Chinese nationality; hence, they applied the name Sangley to all Chinese.

The economic life of the Philippines during the Spanish times also depended on Chinese labor and industry. The Chinese residents were merchants, agriculturist, masons, bankers, painter, shoemakers, metalworkers, and laborers.

Notwithstanding their valuable economic services, the Chinese were not given fair treatment by the Spanish authorities. The increasing number of Chinese immigrants was viewed with suspicion and fear, for a large Chinese community was regarded as a peril to Spanish rule. To discourage Chinese immigration, the Spanish authorities taxed them heavily – 64 reales for permission to stay, 5 reales for tribute, and 12 reales for owning a house.

The Parian (also Parian de Arroceros was an area adjacent to Intramuros) was the Chinatown in Manila during the Spanish times. It played a significant role in the history of the Philippines. Originally, the Parian was situated on the south bank of the Pasig River near the Santo Domingo Church. Upon this site, the first Parian was erected by Governor General Gonzalo Ronquillo de Peñalosa in 1581.

Chinese immigrants continued to enter the Philippines, their population thus increased year in and year out. From around 150 Chinese in 1571, the number of Chinese residents swelled to 10,000 in 1588, 30,000 in 1603, 40,000 in 1748, 67,000 in 1886, and 100,000 in 1896.

The first known contact between the Japanese and the Spaniards was in 1570 when Spanish Marshal Martín de Goiti, after capturing Raha Sulayman's Islamic kingdom of Maynilad, found twenty Japanese residents. One of them was named Pablo, a Christian. Evidently, he had been converted to Christianity in Japan by the Jesuit missionaries before he came to live in Manila. Two years later (1572), Captain Juan de Salcedo, while sailing from Manila to the Ilocos, encountered three Japanese piratical junks off the coast of Pangasinan and drove them away after a spirited fight.

In the early years of Spanish rule, trade with Japan, which began during pre-Magellanic times, was encouraged by the government. Annually in March, Japanese vessels from Nagasaki anchored at Manila Bay, bringing salted meats, utensils, weapons, writing cases, and other Japanese products. They returned home in June, laden with raw Chinese silk, gold, deerskin, wax, earthen jars, and other Philippine exports. In succeeding years, more Japanese ships came to Manila for purposes of trade.

Japanese settlers in the Philippines were fewer than the Chinese. They were better treated by Spanish authorities and no discriminatory laws were made against them, unlike in the case of the Chinese. This was due to the fact that the Japanese were a valiant and fighting people, hence the Spaniards feared and respected them.

Most of the Japanese immigrants who settled in the Philippines were Christians. They were expelled from their own country because of their Christian faith. In 1619, the Japanese population had reached around 2,000, and in 1621, this number increased to 3,000. The closing of Japan to the world by Shogun Iyemitsu in 1639 stopped Japanese immigration to the Philippines. Thus, the Japanese population in the Philippines dwindled.

In 1853, Commodore Matthew C. Perry, leading a squadron of American warships, reopened Japan to the world. Consequently, Philippine-Japanese relations were revived. In 1875, a Japanese economic mission visited Manila to promote Philippine-Japanese trade. The Japanese consulate was established in Manila in 1889. Filipino patriots who were persecuted by the Spanish authorities fled to Japan, where they were welcomed.

PCG BOLSTERS INTEROPERABILITY WITH INDONESIA, JAPAN COUNTERPARTS

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has bolstered its interoperability with Indonesia's Directorate of Sea Transportation (DGST) and Japan Coast Guard (JCG) through the conduct of integrated maritime drills in the vicinity waters off Makassar, Indonesia, today, 26 May 2022.

During the ongoing Regional Marine Pollution Exercise (MARPOLEX) 2022, the PCG, DGST, and JCG conducted search and rescue, firefighting, and oil spill response to test, evaluate, and improve their maritime capabilities.

According to Acting Director General Mugen Sartoto of DGST, the possibility of a major oil spill in the sea lane between Lombok, Makassar Strait, and Sulawesi Sea has grown since the implementation of the 3.5 meters keel to seafloor clearance for bulk oil carriers. It caused maritime traffic to increase, putting the said vicinity waters at a higher risk of an oil spill.

The maritime exercise's general scenario was as follows: M/T Palu Sipat, a 200,000-tonner bulk oil carrier registered in Indonesia carrying 1.3 million barrels of oil, collided with a passenger vessel. Its hull on the starboard side cracked and spilled approximately 800 barrels of crude oil onto the water. A fire occurred due to the collision. Oil spill Tier 1 was activated.

Due to insufficient personnel and equipment, the situation was escalated to Tier 2. Equipment and personnel from nearby ports responded to the incident. However, the incident continued to escalate, causing the fire to grow bigger, while six of the distressed vessel's crew members jumped into the water.

After assessing the situation, the harbormaster of Makassar proposed to DGST to escalate the oil spill response to Tier 3 International level. DGST took over the operation control, but due to insufficient national resources, DGST requested assistance from the PCG and JCG.

Immediately, the PCG and JCG deployed their vessels near the vicinity waters of Indonesia.

BRP Cape Engaño (MRRV-4411) rendered assistance in the search and rescue operations of the missing crew members, while BRP Malapascua (MRRV-4403) provided firefighting assistance.

Moreover, BRP Gabriela Silang (OPV-8301) focused on the oil spill and recovery operations by laying its oil spill boom to control the further spread of spilled oil in the said vicinity waters.

BRP Teresa Magbanua (MRRV-9701), on the other hand, served as the control vessel during the operations.

JCG's PLH Mizuno also assisted during the said maritime exercise that concluded with a sailing pass among the 19 participating vessels — 14 from DGST, four from PCG, and one from JCG.

The biennial MARPOLEX is an implementation of the 1981 Sulawesi Sea Oil Spill Response Network Plan Agreement. The Regional MARPOLEX 2022 is the 22nd conduct of the said maritime exercise since its establishment in 1986.

TRIVIA 16
DID YOU KNOW? | General Artemio Ricarte, also popularly known as "El Vibora", is the Father of the Philippine Army.

Because of his accomplishments on the battlefield during the Philippine Revolution, Gen. Artemio "El Vibora" Ricarte y Garcia was elected as the Captain General of the newly constituted Revolutionary Army under the rule of Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo when the Magdiwang and Magdalo Council held an assembly in Tejeros on March 22, 1897. This momentous occasion led Gen. Ricarte to be regarded as the Father and the first Commanding General of the modern Philippine Army. During this time, Gen. Ricarte gave advice and insights to Gen. Aguinaldo on the intention of America to the Philippines and saw the start of the Philippine-American War.

Gen. Ricarte hid under the name "El Vibora", meaning the viper or snake, to protect his identity as he secretly led a revolution under the Kataastaasan, Kagalanggalangang Katipunan ng mga Anak ng Bayan also known as Katipunan. The name was inspired by the New Testament bible verse Matthew 10:16, "Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves." Gen. Ricarte brought justice to his chosen pseudonym as he led the Filipino forces to victory through careful planning and execution during the uprisings in Cavite.

He started and won the Battle of San Francisco de Malabon, one of the earliest skirmishes between the Filipino and Spanish forces. He also fought against the Spanish forces during the Battle of Binakayan-Dalahican, and against the American forces during the Battle of Zapote River. Like his namesake, Gen. Ricarte did not hesitate to viciously strike the enemies and use stealth to accomplish his mission to eradicate those who threatened the freedom of his country. During the revolution, the name "El Vibora" was synonymous with victorious military operations and the successful strategies he displayed in the battle.

As he was carrying out his attack on the American forces, Gen. Ricarte was captured and then deported to Guam in 1901by the American Government, where he continued to fight for independence in his own way. With the fall of the Malolos Government in 1902, all Filipino exiles and prisoners were pardoned and sent home to the Philippines if they took their oath of allegiance to the government of United States. Gen. Ricarte never took an oath of allegiance to the Americans during their occupation from 1898 to 1946 even when it meant being away from his motherland. He spent years in Hong Kong and Japan before he finally came back to the Philippines in 1941 during the Second World War.

Born from poor parents in 1866, Gen. Artemio Ricarte y Garcia persevered to get formal education until he successfully earned the Certificate of Maestro de Instruccion Primaria from Escuela Memorial in Ermita. He taught Spanish in Cavite before he secretly joined the Katipunan and fought for the freedom of his country.

His achievements and legacy during the Philippine Revolution and the Philippine-American War were commemorated in different ways, including the Ricarte National Shrine in his hometown in Batac, Ilocos Norte, and the Ricarte Hall as the largest function hall at the Headquarters Philippine Army. #

AFP Chief Nurse visits HPA

The Chief Nurse, Armed Forces of the Philippines Brig. Gen. Venus M. Bajarin paid a courtesy call on Army Commanding General Lt. Gen. Romeo S. Brawner, Jr., at the Army' s main headquarters in Fort Bonifacio, Metro Manila on the 25th of May 2022.

Lt. Gen. Brawner and Brig. Gen. Bajarin discussed the progress of plans and programs of AFP chief nurse and the implementation of nursing service policies. Army Chief Nurse Col. Maria Victoria Juan accompanied the chief military nurse during the visit.

It can be recalled that the Philippine Army, in its bid to develop its air medical evacuation capability, launched its first air ambulance helmed by a critical care team during the celebration of the organization's 125th founding anniversary two months ago.

The Army Chief in his previous speeches has vowed to push for the procurement of more air ambulances to save lives of soldiers in the frontlines. "We are developing this capability because the life of each soldier counts. Even if we save only one life through this capability, it is already worth it," Lt. Gen. Brawner said.

At a historic moment for Finland, please join CSIS for a conversation with Pekka Haavisto, the Finnish Minister for Foreign Affairs. Russia's invasion of Ukraine has galvanized a strong European response, from diplomatic condemnation and economic sanctions to the provision of lethal aid to Ukraine. Finland's and Sweden's response was to officially announce, in mid-May, their intention to join NATO.

This discussion is an opportunity to hear from Minister Haavisto on how he sees Europe's security environment and the impetus behind Finland's historic decision to join NATO, as well as how they will work with the United States and other allies.

When a crisis hits, suddenly, the world looks nothing like it did before.

For more than 100 years, people have turned to the radio to make sense of their world and for life-saving information in times of war and natural disaster.

Since its first commercial broadcast in 1920 radio has become the primary source of information for most people worldwide. In many developing countries, despite much of the population not having access to televisions, laptops, or the internet, 75% of people have radios.

This is why radio is an integral part of crisis communication for countries experiencing war, pandemics, or natural disasters. It's also why it is essential that we utilize it to reach every corner of the earth with the love of Jesus. Read our latest blog post to learn more about the Power of Radio in Crisis and how you could be a part of its unwavering impact.

Yours in Christ,

Filipina Patriot Josefa Llanes Escoda

You may have seen her face on your 1,000-peso bill. Perhaps her name always pops into your mind every time you hear "Girl Scout of the Philippines." Whatever the case, the story of Pepa, as she was fondly called, is way more amazing than we give it credit for.

For one, Pepa has a very impressive resume. She earned her master's degree in social work (on scholarship!) from Columbia University. It was also in the US where she trained in girl scouting. You know what happened next: She returned to the Philippines, trained young girls, and organized the GSP as its first National Executive.

During World War II, Japanese forces invaded the Philippines. By 1944, news of the underground activities of Josefa Llanes Escoda and her husband Antonio reached far and wide. As the Japanese Army pushed deeper in the country, The couple had intensified their activities of supplying medicine, food, clothes and messages to both Filipino war prisoners and American internees in concentration camps.

Lt. José L. Llanes, Commander of Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur, said he saw Josefa Llanes Escoda on 14 January 1944 in the presence of her husband, Antonio Escoda. Josefa Llanes Escoda left this final message to Lt. José L. Llanes:

"I have done my duty to my country and God! To my mind the most I have done is having helped with the little I could do to save the lives of the surrendered soldiers of Bataan and Corregidor. I have offered myself as a guarantor for men later released by the enemy, that they commit no anti-Japanese act, men who, if they had the guts left would continue their resistance. I have acted as guarantors not only for the sake of humanity, but also to encourage them to fight again. If you happen to survive, and I fail, tell our people that the women of the Philippines did their part also in making the ember sparks of truth and liberty alive till the last moment."

Antonio was first arrested in June 1944, and Josefa Llanes Escoda was also arrested two months later on 27 August. She was imprisoned in Fort Santiago, the same prison as her husband, who was executed in 1944 along with General Vicente Lim, who was imprisoned with him. On 6 January 1945, Josefa Llanes Escoda was then taken and held in one of the buildings of Far Eastern University occupied by the Japanese. She was last seen alive on January 6, 1945, severely beaten and weak, and was transferred into a Japanese transport truck. It is presumed that she was executed and buried in an unmarked grave, either in the La Loma Cemetery or Manila Chinese Cemetery, which Japanese forces used as execution and burial grounds for thousands of Filipinos who resisted the Japanese occupation.

The Japanese learned about their heroic efforts and soon arrested Pepa and her husband, Antonio Escoda. Many believe that both were executed, although Pepa's death remains a mystery.

One posthumous award after another was given to honor Pepa's contributions, the most prestigious of which was the Philippine Legion of Honor Medal from the AFP and the Silver medal from the American Red Cross.

Don't miss your opportunity to save on your spot at our Birmingham Conference. The early-bird rate ends tonight at 11:59 p.m. ET, so make sure you register today and save with our lowest rate.

Our allegiance to Jesus Christ will cost us in this world. This is because the gospel turns the values of the world upside down. Rather than shrink back from our faith in shame, we must be ready to be called fools for the sake of our crucified King, knowing that He alone gives true wisdom and life.

Join us on August 12–13, 2022, for Fools for Christ, our conference in Birmingham, AL. As we consider God's perfect wisdom in the gospel and in the Christian life, we can be better prepared to withstand opposition with courageous faith. Though serving the Lord may cost us everything in this world, compromise will cost immeasurably more. Register today to secure your early-bird discount.

Bible Study / Dr. Eli Lizorkin-Eyzenberg Speaks
May 25, 2022, 02:33:26 PM
In Judaism, as is in Christianity, the power of God to resurrect is celebrated. God is able to do that which is impossible for mere humans. However, His desire to bless is not of much use to Israel, if He would be unable to intervene in the world in which Israel exists. The second blessing of the Amida regarding the Divine Might, therefore, begins with the words:

אַתָּה גִּבּור לְעולָם אֲדנָי. מְחַיֵּה מֵתִים אַתָּה רַב לְהושִׁיעַ

(Pronounced: Ata Gibor leolam Adonai. Mechae metim ata, rav leshoshia).

You are, a mighty warier, forever, Lord. You are the one who raises up the dead, you are great enough to save. Did you get a copy of "Hebrew Insights into Revelation (click here)" yet for you and your friends?

News: Those of you who were blessed by my teaching and writing, please, consider to support my ministry. This month I am raising funds for conference for Christian cleargy in Muslim Indonesia. Please, do so by clicking here (chose any amount to help).

In His firm grip,
Dr. Eli Lizorkin-Eyzenberg

Bible Study / Story of Joseph in Jewish Context
May 25, 2022, 02:29:19 PM
From Israel Bible Institute: I must warn you in advance. You will not meet on the pages of this book the very Joseph you have always encountered in your Sunday school and in Christian movies. The real Joseph you will meet will at first surprise you (perhaps he will even disturb you) and then (I pray) make sense to you. As you and I slowly uncover this ancient moving story hidden under the layer of translation, you may be moved to tears. At least I was, when I slowly walked for the first time through this amazing story of despair and survival, hope and justice and then finally peace. Get the book and let's begin without delay.

In this book, Dr. Eli Lizorkin-Eyzenberg and Prof. Pinchas Shir, invite you on a journey of discovery. You will witness the ancient culture embodied by the 1st Book of Enoch and see some of the significant ways it may have influenced the New Testament writers with its peculiar Old Testament interpretations. This fabulous collection of Enoch material (originally translated into English by the late George H. Schodde, but adopted into a modern English and accompanied by the fascinating illustrations of a talented Colombian artist, Lyda Estrada) can easily be read in a single evening. We suggest that you start by reading the entire work, beginning to end, in one sitting. Then, for your second read, get your pen (or e-reader notetaker) ready, because there will be many things you will want to note as you read through the book. We guarantee it.

Philippine Showcase / Sta Hacienda Rosalia
May 25, 2022, 11:21:06 AM
By Berna Romulo Puyat
Visiting Sta Hacienda Rosalia was like meeting a celebrity in person. The Gaston ancestral mansion in Manapla, near Bacolod, was immortalized as the star setting in Peque Gallaga's film Oro, Plata, Mata.

The colonial plantation-style mansion was built in the mid 1930s by the sugar baron Jose Gaston and is now being maintained by his son, Msgr. Guillermo Gaston. The Monsignor also designed the hacienda's unique chapel, the Chapel of the Cartwheels, which is built with different farming implements, most notably the carabao cartwheel that's used as stained glass windows and turned into open-air walls. Truly a special place to visit in Sugarlandia!

73IB, 11RCDG hold capability demo to Davao Occidental ROTC cadets

The 73rd Infantry Battalion (73IB) of the 10th Infantry Division and the 11th Regional Community Defense Group of the Reserve Command, Philippine Army (RCPA) held a capability demonstration to 96 Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) cadets at the 73IB headquarters in Barangay Feliz, Malita, Davao Occidental on the 21st of May 2022.

73IB troops performed capability demonstration to familiarize the Southern Philippine Agri-Business and Marine and Aquatic School of Technology's ROTC cadets with squad combat operations. ROTC cadets were also given a glimpse of R4A1 rifle assembling and disassembling and marksmanship training.

ROTC is one of three components of the National Service Training Program program. ROTC is designed to provide military training to college students to train, organize, and mobilize them for national defense preparedness. Graduates of the Army ROTC programs of higher educational institutions become reservists under RCPA.

Army Commanding General Lt. Gen. Romeo S. Brawner, Jr., has earlier said that the command is seeking to recruit quality reservists that will effectively complement regular ground forces.#

By DYRG News. ORMOC VILLA HOTEL WALA'Y OCCUPANCY PERMIT, GIPASIRHAN

ORMOC CITY, Leyte - Temporaryo nga gipasirhan sa lokal nga kagamhanan sa dakbayan sa Ormoc ang Ormoc Villa Hotel gumikan sa kalapasan niini sa National Building Code of the Philippines.

Gahapong adlawa, Mayo 24, 2022, giisyu sa Business Permits and Licensing Office (BPLO) ang cease and desist order (CDO) alang sa temporaryo nga pagpasira sa establismento gumikan kay wala kini occupancy permit gikan pa sa pag-operate niini niadtong 1995.

"The report rendered to this office has indicated that the Inaki Larrazabal Enterprises, Inc. has been occupying and operating the Ormoc Villa Hotel without the Certificate of Occupancy, contrary to Section 309 of the National Building Code of the Philippines" base sa CDO

"It is the opinion of this office that the processing of the Occupancy Permit Application does not constitute as the rightful response to our letter dated May 19, 2022 since this office has asked for a copy of their Certificate of Occupancy for Ormoc Villa Hotel." matod ni Mendoza

(JKDP)

Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) gave a number of impassioned remarks about the mass shooting in Uvalde, TX, on Tuesday. The attack left at least 14 children and one adult dead at an elementary school in the town. Murphy represents the state of Connecticut, which experienced the horrific Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in 2012.

'14 kids dead in an elementary school in Texas right now. What are we doing?' Murphy said in remarks from the Senate floor early on Tuesday evening. 'What are we doing? Just days after a shooter walked into a grocery store to gun down African American patrons, we have another Sandy Hook on our hands. What are we doing? There were more mass shootings than days in the year. Our kids are living in fear every single time they set foot in the classroom because they think they're going to be next.'

'Why do you spend all this time running for the United States Senate, why do you go through all the hassle of getting this job, of putting yourself in a position of authority if your answer as the slaughter increases, as our kids run for their lives, we do nothing?' Murphy asked his colleagues, a reference to the many times gun safety legislation has languished following Sandy Hook, Parkland, and other mass shootings. 'What are we doing? Why are you here?'

Philippine History / About Telesforo Trinidad
May 25, 2022, 08:10:56 AM
WHO WAS TELESFORO TRINIDAD?

U.S. Navy Secretary Carlos del Toro announced today that a future Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer will be named USS Telesforo Trinidad.

TELESFORO DE LA CRUZ TRINIDAD (November 25, 1890 – May 8, 1968) was born in Panay in the Province of Aklan. He was a fireman 2nd class in the United States Navy who received the Medal of Honor for actions in Mexican waters near La Paz, on board the USS San Diego in January 1915.

On January 21, 1915, when the Philippines was under U.S. military rule, young Petty Officer Trinidad was serving aboard USS San Diego when the captain decided to conduct a four-hour full-speed and endurance trial to determine if the ship could still maintain its officially rated flank speed. Following the trial, an obstructed tube in one of the ship`s boilers gave way, creating a chain reaction.

Trinidad heroically re-entered the closed space to the No. 2 boiler to save Fireman 2nd Class R. As he was carrying Daly through the No. 4 fireroom, an explosion of the No. 3 boiler hit Trinidad, which burned him in the face. After seeing Daly to safety and despite his injuries, Trinidad then assisted in rescuing another injured shipmate from the No. 3 fireroom.

For his bravery, the U.S. Navy awarded him the Medal of Honor.

Trinidad served both World Wars before retiring to the Philippines and lived on his pension.

On May 23, 1578, Spanish Governor General Francisco de Sande ordered an expedition to Sulu and Maguindanao with the intent of making them vassals and checking the spread of Islam in the area through the preaching of Christianity. Led by Captain Esteban Rodriguez de Figueroa, veteran of the war with Brunei which caused the fall of the Bruneian capital a month earlier, the Spanish managed to establish a foothold in Jolo by June 1578.

To prevent capture, Sulu Sultan Muhammad ul-Halim, identified in other sources as Rajah Ilo (Iro), decided to pay them a tribute of pearls and gold. Sande would later report how the Sulu sultan did not only have holdings in Brunei, he was also related to the Brunei Sultan Saiful Rizal (Seif-ur Rijal) by marriage, the latter's sister being married to Rajah Ilo.

Figueroa, however, failed to make progress in the exploration and conquest of Maguindanao. A later expedition from March to May 1579, this time under Captain Gabriel de Rivera, was more successful in charting the Pulangi area, but only made contact with a number of Maranao and Basilan datus. The Maguindanao sultan, known as Datu Dimasankay, apparently avoided by all means to establish first contact with the Spanish as he retreated further inland. It was reported that Rajah Ilo was also nowhere to be found, transferring with some 300 people to Borneo as Sulu supposedly suffered famine.

SEOUL, May 24 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's military has developed self-driving technology that enables vehicles to navigate through unconventional, rough terrain, a state-run defense research agency said Tuesday.

The artificial intelligence (AI) technology allows cars to analyze and identify drivable areas based on "training data" collected from test runs, and control their navigation even at a high speed, according to the Agency for Defense Development (ADD).

Aeschylus was an ancient Greek tragedian, and is often described as the father of tragedy. Academic knowledge of the genre begins with his work, and understanding of earlier Greek tragedy is largely based on inferences made from reading his surviving plays. According to Aristotle, he expanded the number of characters in the theatre and allowed conflict among them. Formerly, characters interacted only with the chorus. Only seven of his estimated seventy to ninety plays have survived. There is a long-standing debate regarding the authorship of one of them, Prometheus Bound, with some scholars arguing that it may be the work of his son Euphorion. Fragments from other plays have survived in quotations, and more continue to be discovered on Egyptian papyri. These fragments often give further insights into Aeschylus' work. He was likely the first dramatist to present plays as a trilogy. His Oresteia is the only extant ancient example."

Philippine Showcase / BRP Melchora Aquino
May 24, 2022, 12:26:34 PM

His poems include "Mandalay", "Gunga Din", "The Gods of the Copybook Headings", "The White Man's Burden: The United States and the Philippine Islands", and "If—".
