Thanks VRL! It is also nice to hear recommendations from people you personally know like the Boholanos living in Singapore. In reading website reviews, here's the catch: companies are employing people to write good reviews about them and you never know who's telling the truth. But if you get a recommendation from people we know, it is easy to trust and believe the reviews.

The perfect business suit doesn't have to cost an arm and leg neither does it only have to come in black.
The perfect suit is a product of a blend of a refined fabric and perfect cut. I appreciate that not everyone will be able to afford a bespoke trouser suit but by just taking the pain to properly measure yourself before going out to buy that lovely skirt suit you really want will make a world of difference in how it sits on you. November 29, 2010, 11:32:23 AM
Since Homecoming is such a big and special event, you need to start planning early, especially if you might have a chance at being named Homecoming Queen. Because of the limited production of designer dresses, and the tendency of department stores to quickly run out of products in high demand, pre-planning is crucial in order to obtain the best dress. If you don't go shopping at the earliest date, it won't be possible to locate the latest designs or to guarantee you'll be the only one wearing your chosen dress at the event...click here to continue

Technology / How to Play Yahtzee Game
November 29, 2010, 10:50:59 AM
Anyone can play Yahtzee because of the easiness in learning the game. The overall object is to achieve the highest score in 13 hands. Each hand consists of a roll of five dice, a second re-roll, and then a third re-rolls. As the hands are each finished you take the score that you get and record it on a special score card that has an Upper Section and a Lower Section. Each combination of rolls gives the player a certain number of points, and depending on what you rolled, the score will be noted either in the Upper Section or the Lower Section. click here to read more

Former Pinoy Big Brother Double Up (PBBDU) housemate Jason Francisco on Sunday denied hitting on-screen and real-life partner Melai Cantiveros.

Francisco maintained that he will never physically abuse Cantiveros, who was the grand winner of the PBBDU edition.

“Bakit kailangan ko siyang saktan? Atsaka hindi ko makakayang pagbuhatan siya ng kamay... Hindi maganda ‘yon,” he told “The Buzz.”

He also pointed out that his girlfriend of 9 months will never allow herself to be abused physically by anyone because she is a fighter and a strong woman.

“Kung alam ninyo lang hindi po ako manalo sa kanya [sa mga argumento] kaya nga imposible na mabugbog ko siya. Simangutan ko lang siya, nambabato na siya ng tsinelas… hindi naman niya itatapon, iaamba lang,” he said.

In the same interview, Cantiveros seconded Francisco’s denial.

“Hindi po totoo yan over. Bakit naman niya ako bubugbugin? Kung binugbog niya ako, matagal ko na din siyang binugbog din. Nagbugbugan na kaming dalawa,” she said.

Cantiveros and Francisco met during their stint inside the PBB house. They were known for their antics while they were still PBBDU housemates. - ABS-CBN

The New People's Army (NPA) released Corporal Daiem Hadajaie in the hinterlands of Barangay Ngan, Compostela Valley 1:30 p.m. Sunday to Davao City Vice Mayor Rodrigo Duterte.

Duterte immediately flew with Cpl. Hadajaie onboard the vice mayor’s personal helicopter towards the Army’s 10th Infantry Division headquarters in Panacan here and turned over the soldier to Major General Jorge Segovia, commander of the 10th ID where he will undergo medical check up and will be placed under debriefing.

Days before his release, Duterte called for the release of Hadjaie from the hands of his rebel abductors for humanitarian reason.

Cpl. Hadajaie was abducted by NPA rebels on November 16 at Upper Ulip in Monkayo, Compostela Valley while the soldier was on his way to the hospital to seek medical treatment.

It was reported that Cpl. Hadajaie is suffering from liver problem based on his colleagues’ observation of the yellow discoloration of his skin.

Cpl. Hadajaie’s wife is also due to give birth to their baby. (PNA)

After 3 years of hearings, the marriage of actress-turned-politician Aiko Melendez and her second husband, Martin Jickain, has finally been annulled.

During her exclusive interview with “The Buzz” host Boy Abunda, Melendez confirmed that she is now single “legally and in a true sense of the word.”

She also divulged that the court has given her sole custody of their only child, daughter Marthena. Her former husband has visitation rights.

Melendez, whose marriage to first husband actor Jomari Yllana has also been annulled, heaved a sigh of relief after learning the court’s decision.

Is she planning to settle down anytime soon now that she is legally free?

“Napaso na ako. So, I will take my time. Ayoko naman na sisihin ako ng dalawang anak ko na, ‘Mom, ‘yong first time na annulment mo okay pa. Second pa, you better think about it.’ Kapag third pa, wala na akong mukhang ihaharap sa mga anak ko,” said Melendez, who has a son, Andrei, from her first marriage.

Melendez is now dating Bulacan, Bulacan Mayor Patrick Meneses. She admitted that they are discussing marriage but nothing is serious yet.

She stressed that she would not get married just “for the heck of it.”

Melendez has also been rumored to be pregnant, but she only laughed off the intrigue during the interview.

Meanwhile, she is not closing her doors to the possibility that she and Jickain will end up as good friends in the future. As for now, they are only civil to each other.

“Kapag may kailangan siya kay Marthena, hindi pa niya madiretsa sa amin kasi traumatic ang nangyari sa amin. Demandahan ang nangyari. Aside sa annulment, may restraining order. So, hindi pa naman kaya pang maging magkaibigan,” she said, referring to the 2008 decision of the Quezon City Regional Trial Court that granted her petition for a permanent protection order.

According to her, what’s important is that Marthena, although she is too young to understand, “adjusted too well” in the situation.

Appeal

Melendez, meanwhile, also made an appeal to Yllana to spend more time with their son. “Jom, magpakita ka naman sa anak mo. Ikaw naman, Diyos ko, ilang taon na.”

She confessed that Yllana would sometimes back out of his promise to Andrei.

She said: “Kapag magpra-promise siya kay Andrei, tuparin niya. Kung hindi niya matutupad, ie-explain niya kay Andrei why what happened. Para kasi ako ‘yong nagiging mukhang sinungaling na sa anak ko…. Sa totoo lang, sinasalo ko lang naman si Jom.” -  ABS-CBN

An arrest warrant was issued against a broadcaster who was charged for libel by Pureza Chatto in connection with a libelous statement issued over the airlanes.

RTC Judge Teofilo Baluma issued the order for the arrest of Rey Blanco, a resident of 70-A Borja Street, this city, after the court found sufficient cause to place him under the custody of the law to stand trial.

The order stemmed from the libel case filed by the wife of the governor after Blanco in his radio program over dyTR said "kini rabang mag-tiayuna murag helas - si mam Pureza ug kini si Congressman Edgar Chatto mga record ani ngilngig. Ang asawa ni Congressman Chatto convicted sa double life sentence sa kaso nga 8 counts of graft and corruption."

The court fixes a P10,000 bail for his provisional liberty.

The order of Judge Baluma was received only yesterday at Camp Dagohoy while the order was dated Nov. 10, 2010 in which it ordered the city PNP chief to execute the order of arrest for Blanco.

The city PNP chief was given 10 days from receipt to execute the order and if the order cannot be served, he was directed to execute an explanation with the Court why the order cannot be served if such is the fact.

A Boholana household service worker for two years in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE) was finally bound home until Arab authorities arrested her for alleged fake passport picture.

It has remained unknown here how overseas Filipino worker (OFW) Haydee (not her real name) had slipped past immigration people in Manila when she then departed for UAE in 2008 using the same questionable travel document.

There is suspicion now that Haydee, 35, married and who hails from an upland barangay in Tubigon, is a victim of illegal recruitment and human trafficking even if she had indeed found job in her foreign destination.

The helpless OFW was immediately locked up in Dubai and later transferred to a detention center in Abu Dhabi.

Her husband and a sister-in-law sought assistance from the OFW Affairs Desk at the provincial capitol for her release and repatriation. Haydee’s case was endorsed by Tubigon Vice Mayor Virgilio Fortich to the OFW desk, a specialized unit institutionalized by Gov. Edgar Chatto since his vice governorship and congressional stint.

The desk, handled by former university professor Reinerio Augusto Real, has championed Chatto’s cause for the OFWs. The desk has maintained links with the Department of Foreign Affairs, Overseas Workers Welfare Administration, Philippine Overseas Employment Administration and related agencies to assist Boholano migrant workers in distress or critical condition.

Haydee was to leave Dubai after her two-year contract expired on September 10, this year, when the immigration men there found out her passport to be bearing not her picture. While still in the Philippines, she had accordingly then asked a woman relative who recruited her about this. Her relative simply assured the innocent Haydee that it would not matter.

Haydee’s can be just one of the numerous cases of syndicated works of the illegal recruiters and human traffickers in cahoots with unscrupulous immigration people. In other cases, job descriptions do not match with the visas. The Bureau of Immigration celebrated its 70th anniversary on September 3, which was almost at the same time of Haydee’s arrest in Dubai.

It has not been known yet if Haydee left the country to UAE through the Manila airport two years ago while authorities just busted a ring of illegal recruiters and human traffickers using the Clark air base as its operation base. Some immigration officers connived with the syndicate. The syndicate facilitated the departure of “tourist workers” or undocumented OFWs who could end up as domestic helpers, if not forced to prostitution as in the case of several Filipina job seekers landing in Malaysia.

Just weeks ago, three female “tourist workers” were nabbed by authorities at the Manila airport after being found out to have hidden their visas and plane tickets inside their panties. It was a new modus operandi of the human trafficking mafia to conceal the true destinations of its “willing” victims.

The trio, who were about to board a flight to Singapore, were actually bound for the UAE, where Haydee still is and detained, as their final destination. The second top destination of the OFWs in the Middle East is the UAE, which foreign minister met with Vice Pres. Jejomar Binay just last month as part of the Arab official’s visit to five Asian nations. Binay is tasked by Pres. Noynoy Aquino to handle the country’s OFW affairs.

Dubai, where Haydee worked and was arrested, is the capital of the UAE which forged a city sisterhood with Makati in Binay’s time as mayor.

MORE VICTIMS

Three prospective OFWs from Tagbilaran City---Raysan Marie Pilayre, Jill Laureen Manluluyo and Jessamine Abay---have yet to be reimbursed of over P.2 million by a Quezon City-based recruitment agency illegally hiring them. Real of Capitol’s OFW desk said the owners of the agency are presently jailed in Cagayan de Oro but the victims still seek assistance from the POEA to claim their money.

A seaman from Balilihan named Esmeraldo Patac died of fatal stroke in India. His wife Gemma sought Chatto’s help thru the OFW desk for the return of her husband’s remains. The governor is a Balilinhon, too. Ven rebo Arigo)

Six Filipinos died Sunday morning in the collision of a minibus and a truck in Kameyama City, Mie Prefecture (province) in Japan, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) confirmed.

The DFA did not release their names but their families in the Philippines have been informed of the tragic incident even as arrangements for the repatriation of the remains are underway and assistance to those in hospital continue.

Quoting police sources, Consul-General Maria Lourdes Ramiro-Lopez said the Filipinos were among 27 passengers and the driver of the van that collided with a truck at an intersection. Five died on impact while the sixth fatality died on the way to hospital.

Twenty-two others in the bus and its driver were injured, ten seriously, and are being treated in a hospital. The DFA did not indicate if those injured were also Filipinos.

The truck driver, identified as Takao Moriwaki, 45, is in police custody. It is not clear if there were others in the truck.

The passengers were on a bus reportedly owned by a temporary staffing agency and were heading towards a factory that manufactures liquid crystal panels. The DFA did not categorically state if the Filipinos were on their way to work in the factory and whether or not they were properly documented.

Mie Prefecture is in the Kansai area of Japan, facing the Pacific Ocean, and is under the consular jurisdiction of the Philippine consulate-general in Osaka City. (PNA)

"Sobrang makitid ang pag-iisip."

This is how controversial personality Hayden Kho describes Sen. Ramon "Bong" Revilla Jr. after the senator's latest tirade against him.

Revilla, who called Kho "the highest pervert" after the sex video scandal broke last year, said he is unhappy that Kho is being labeled the victim in the scandal.

"I’m quite disappointed really. We Filipinos have such a short memory and are quick to forget. I just hope that at the end of the day, everybody gets what they deserve and justice is meted out," he said in a statement to Philippine Star columnist Ricky Lo.

In response, Kho said Revilla was very narrow-minded for issuing the statement.

"Sobrang makitid ang pag-iisip, kasi kung iisipin mo marami ang naging biktima dito hindi lang si Katrina, ako si Vicki Belo, ang mga pamilya natin, ang mga taong kaibigan natin at ang mga taong naniniwala sa akin.

"Saka sa tingin ko, ang publiko ang nagbibigay ng simpatya, kung gusto nilang magbigay noon sa tingin ko wala silang karapatan para sabihin sa kanila kung ano ang dapat nilang maramdaman," he added.

Kho said the senator's words bring no added benefit to the country.

"Siguro wala namang maitutulong kung ini-insulto lang niya ako ng ini-insulto palagi sa TV, walang naitutulong, para sa taong supposedly ay nagsisilbi sa taong bayan, I think walang naitutulong yon," he said.

Kho is facing criminal charges filed by actress Katrina Halili after their sex videos were leaked on the Internet.

In November 2009, his medical license was revoked by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC).

Showbiz & Celebrity / Beyonce Loves Manny Pacquiao
November 28, 2010, 12:54:02 PM
Pop Superstar Beyonce has named 8-division world boxing champion Manny Pacquiao as one of her favorite athletes.

In an interview with ESPN on Thanksgiving Day, Beyonce described Pacquiao as a "beast" in his boxing profession but is humble and "calm" deep down.

"When he gets in that ring, he is a beast! I love it!" she gushed.

The singer-actress-model also noted Pacquiao's personality inside and outside the ring.

"He showed that you can have humility and be a calm person and also be driven when it’s time and be a fighter,” Beyonce related.

She said she could relate to the Filipino boxing hero because he was "born" to do something.

"I love him because I really relate to people that were born to do something and get lost in the moment," she said. - ABS-CBN

Corella - Bohol / Nepotism Case in Corella Town, Bohol
November 28, 2010, 04:03:35 AM
By Ric Obedencio

The Court of Appeals (CA) has overturned the ruling of the Civil Service Commission (CSC) with respect to the nepotism case filed against Claudia D. Narisma by Mauricia Sarigumba Bapilar, both of Corella town.

In its 9-page decision, the CA has “set aside” CSC Resolutions Nos. 081394 issued on July 2007 and 082304 dated December 15, 2008 that disqualified Narisma in her appointment as Sangguniang Bayan secretary of Corella, Bohol.

“The appointment of petitioner Claudia Narisma (who filed for review of her case) is declared as not violative of the proscription against nepotism under section 79 of the Local Government Code,” said the CA’s 20th division.

Its decision docketed as CA-G. R. CEB-SP NO. 04084 and promulgated November 5, 2010 is signed by Associate Justices Edgardo De los Santos, Pampio Abarintos and Agnes Reyes-Carpio.

But the appellate court denied Narisma’s request for entitlement in the form of back salaries for services rendered from July 2007 to September 2007, citing that such is under administrative case which is “distinct and different from the case on hand.”

The case on hand arose from Narisma’s appointment as SB secretary issued by then acting Vice-Mayor Maria Asuncion B. Daquio on January 28, 2005. The appointment of Narisma was carried out when then Vice-Mayor Isabelo Daquipil took a leave of absence on Dec. 10, 2004 to January 31, 2005.

Narisma’s close relation by affinity within 4th civil degree to Daquipil prompted Bapilar to file nepotism case against the former with the CSC, which found the grounds valid.

The CA found CSC erred in “finding that the appointment of Narisma is nepotistic.” Under section 79 of the Local Government Code, it provides that no person shall be appointed in the career service of the local government if he is related within the 4th civil degree of consanguinity or affinity to the appointing or recommending authority.”

The CA stressed that Daquio, as acting vice-mayor, has the authority to make such appointment of Narisma based on section 445 of the same Code. This is also upheld by the CSC, it said. It added the appointing authority, in this case is Daquio, “is not in anyway related to the petitioner (Narisma). Thus, the petitioner’s  appointment does not violate section 79 of the LGC,” CA concluded. Narisma is assisted by lawyer Lord Marapao IV. (RVO)

Veteran broadcaster Richard Bompat filed last Friday attempted homicide charges against the task force member who boxed him without any provocation at the sidewalk of the Captiol building last Monday afternoon.
Charged was Cesar Goloso, a known member of the city monitoring team or city task force organized under Mayor Dan Lim's office. Aside from Goloso, Jido Lopena and Constantino Jongjong Garcia were also included in the charge sheet. The trio, during the campaign period were reported trailing behind radio personalities who are vocal critics of Mayor Lim.
City PNP Chief Julius Cesat Gornez signed the complaint against the three suspects supported by sworn affidavits signed by Bompat himself and two witnesses, Stephen Soliva and Elmer Apale.
In their affidavits, Goloso was positively identified as the person who boxed the broadcaster that led to his emergency medical treatment at the Gov. Celestino Gallares Regional Hospital.
Dr. Bernard Magdoza, attending physician stated that Bompat suffered two lacerated wounds, one measuring two cm at the right lower periorbital area and another 1 cm laceration at the upper nasal area. Doctors have to do five stitches to stop the blood profusely flowing from the wounds when Bompat was rushed to the hospital.
Bompat who also works at Effective Development Communication (EDcom) office of the provincial government narrated that while having conversation with Apale and Soliva  in front of the Bohol Environment Management Office , a very familiar face approached him and without any provocation, Goloso slapped him saying "You did not know me?"
Thereafter, the broadcaster said Goloso boxed his stomach  causing him to bend due to pain. Bompat said that "not satisfied with what he did , he threw a fistic blow hitting my face, I felt something hard from his fist similar that of a pachicorno."  After he was hit by the fistic  blow, much  blood oozed from the wounds.
He said he fell down at the pavement feeling dizzy while he was assisted by people around him to rise up and  was rushed to the hospital.
He learned from witnesses that Gosolo arrived at the scene disembarking from a motorcycle driven by Lopena. After the incident, Goloso immediately left the place and boarded to a waiting motorcycle driven by Garcia.
                 BOMPAT'S STATEMENT
The incident came few days after Bompat in his radio program "Luyo sa Balita" over dyRD commented on running issues confronting the city government.
He said he did not have any personal conflict with the suspect.
"I will seek justice on this incident, " he declared as he raised the question: "After me, who's next?"
The reason why this happened was a "clear move to silence me as a broadcaster," after he recently  commented on issues against the city government while criticizing the city mayor for allowing city government-paid radio programs to lambast other radio personalities.
                  REACTIONS
The incident involving the 62-year old Bompat generated criticism from the public.
"It was an affront to press freedom," stressed Peter Dejaresco, general manager of Bohol Chronicle Radio Corp who said that "justice should be given to Bompat who, like other journalists, was simply doing his task as purveyor of truth."
Bompat's case came as the fourth incident involving intimidation on local media personalities.
The first was the attempted arson at the residence of broadcaster Roberto "Batchoy" Alba, the throwing of dirty water on the face of broadcaster Nestor Darrol inside the booth of station dyTR and the power disconnection ordered by the city mayor at the residences of Tagbilaran-by-Nite ancchorman Jerry Pabe and technician Gerry Cajes, all connected with dyRD, the radio station which air legitimate issues confronting the city mayor.
The power disconnection case has a pending complaint filed against mayor Lim at the office of the Ombudsman Visayas.
For his part, Tootsie Escobia,EDCom head in a statement issues said he "hopes for justice and speedy resolution of the incident adding that it will also be a victory of the press freedom once justice be given to Bompat."
                   SURRENDERED?
Mayor Lim in a statement issued in his radio program said the suspect surrendered to the police after the incident, thus, he ignored the appeal of Bompat aired over the airlanes while the latter was at the hospital.
However, verifications made at the city PNP showed that Goloso never appeared nor surrendered at the city PNP as claimed by the mayor.
In fact, a hot pursuit conducted by police operatives right after the incident failed to arrest the suspect.
For his part, Mark Monton, a trusted aide of the mayor said Goloso is not a member of the task force but admitted that the suspect is a regular employee of the city government hired during the time of former Mayor Joe Torralba.

Has the slay of a young student here something to do with the rape case filed against her teacher in computer?

This baffled the police investigators in the shooting of 15-year-old Rose Onod in broad daylight early last week while she was about to board a tricycle after her class at Grace Christian School just beside the city airport.

But the young student’s mother, Avelina Onod, believes so. The mother said in a news report  yesterday that she suspected that the shooting of her daughter could be linked to the rape case they filed against a computer teacher at Cortes High School. The said (Cortes) school is where her daughter was studying prior to her transfer to Grace Christian School.

The name of the teacher is withheld pending to get his side. He was already invited by the police who are digging deeper of the crime.

Avelina Onod, who was literally crying when interviewed, alleged that there’s no other circumstance, except the rape case that may implicate the teacher in the killing of her daughter.

The mother bared that the family filed a case against the teacher for the latter’s attempt to rape her daughter. But the provincial prosecutor’s office (PPO) dismissed the complaint for lack of evidence, she said. The case was reduced to “acts of lasciviousness.”

She said they appealed the ruling to the Department of Justice and the latter upheld and gave PPO ten days to “file information” or go ahead with the filing of “acts of lasciviousness” against the teacher. She was told that the teacher had her daughter being touched by her private parts. The next attempt to allegedly molest her was when her daughter was requested by the teacher to come to school (while in Cortes) sometime in December 2008 but the latter did not show up.

The teacher who is a married man was kicked out of school by the priest-director of the Cortes school apparently because of the rape attempt. He is now allegedly living with another woman, the mother said.

She said she decided to transfer her daughter to the city, about ten kilometers from Cortes town, even the schoolyear is about to end because her daughter wanted to be away from the teacher.

The young student ran for kagawad in the recent Sangguniang Kabataan election but did not make it. She added that when the case prospered upon the DOJ advice to file the case against the teacher, Rose then felt happy, the mother said.

She called on those who witnessed the shooting to come out in the open and help unravel the killing and those perpetrators to surrender so justice would be served.

A cartographic sketch is to be made public next week, said SP03 Edgardo Chan in an interview while police still are looking at other angles of the crime.

Federal agents in a sting operation arrested a Somali-born teenager just as he tried blowing up a van he believed was loaded with explosives at a crowded Christmas tree lighting ceremony in Portland, authorities said.

The bomb was an elaborate fake supplied by the agents and the public was never in danger, authorities said.

Mohamed Osman Mohamud, 19, was arrested at 5:40 p.m. Friday just after he dialed a cell phone that he thought would set off the blast but instead brought federal agents and police swooping down on him.

Yelling "Allahu Akbar!" â€" Arabic for "God is great!" â€" Mohamud tried to kick agents and police after he was taken into custody, according to prosecutors.

"The threat was very real," said Arthur Balizan, special agent in charge of the FBI in Oregon. "Our investigation shows that Mohamud was absolutely committed to carrying out an attack on a very grand scale,"

A law enforcement official, who was not authorized to discuss the investigation publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity, told The Associated Press on Saturday that federal agents began investigating the suspect after receiving a tip from someone who was concerned about the teenager.

The FBI affidavit that outlined the investigation alleges that Mohamud planned the attack for months, at one point mailing bomb components to FBI operatives, whom he believed were assembling the device.

According to the official, Mohamud hatched the plan on his own and without any instruction from a foreign terrorist organization, and he planned the details, including where to park the van for the maximum number of casualties.

The affidavit said Mohamud was warned several times about the seriousness of his plan, that women and children could be killed, and that he could back out, but he told agents: "Since I was 15 I thought about all this;" and "It's gonna be a fireworks show ... a spectacular show."

Mohamud, a naturalized U.S. citizen living in Corvallis, was charged with attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction, which carries a maximum sentence of life in prison. A court appearance was set for Monday. Few details were available about him late Friday.

Authorities allowed the plot to proceed in order to build up enough evidence to charge the suspect with attempt.

Officials didn't say if the suspect had any ties to other Americans recently accused of trying to carry out attacks on U.S. soil, including alleged efforts in May by a Pakistan-born man to set off a car bomb near Times Square or another Pakistan-born Virginia resident accused last month in a bomb plot to kill commuters.

PCSO Assistant General Manager Liza Gabuyo said bettors missed the 22-55-51-14-54-45 combination, which would have guaranteed them a share in the P693,229,971.60 jackpot, the biggest in PCSO history.

The previous record was in February 2009, when the pot for the 6/49 Super Lotto game reached P347 million. Two lucky bettors picked the same combination to win the top prize and split it even.

But although no one hit the jackpot, Gabuyo said there were 154,165 others who won low-tier prizes for getting three to five correct numbers.

Gabuyo said the pot money is expected to reach P738 million when the draw resumes on Monday.

Saturday night was the 85th draw.

A daring armed robbery suspect barged into the Caltex gasoline station near Plaza Rizal mid-morning yesterday and carted away P100,000.

The station owned by businessman George Lim was the victim of the latest robbery in the city which was pulled by a lone gunman at 9:30am yesterday.

Grace Victorio, a staff in the said gasoline station disclosed to the Chronicle that the unidentified gunman entered into the station's mini store purportedly to buy Marlboro, Lipovitan and biscuit. Not sensing anything unusual in his entry into the mini-store, he was given his order.

The suspect suddenly pulled a pistol and poked it at Victorio and declared it a holdup.

Gelyn Bernaldez, the cashier of the mini store, was also helpless as the suspect entered into the adjoining office inside the store and carted all the bills representing the sales left overnight of the gas station.

In about five minutes, the suspect took the bills amounting to some P100,000. He rushed out from the office and rode in his motorcycle off to J.A. Clarin st.

They described the suspect as between 30 to 35 years old, wearing a helmet and jacket.

The gas station had no guard on duty at the time of the robbery since the Blue Guards are on duty only between 6:00PM to 6:00AM daily.

For his part, P02 Silvan Palacio of the city criminal investigation section admitted facing a blank wall since the salesgirls could not give enough clue on the description of the suspect as they were still in a state of shock. However, police will review some police characters who are in the watch list of the PNP. (Anthony Ranoa Aniscal )

A veteran broadcaster landed at the Gov. Celestino Gallares Regional Hospital late Monday afternoon after he was attacked by an employee of the city government identified with the controversial task force of City Mayor Dan Lim.

Richard Bompat who also works as member of the Effective Development Communication (EDCom) of the provincial government was rushed with blood in the face to the hospital after he

Doctors at the hospital had to do five stitches on the deep wound in his face as they did all means to control the flow of blood. He rolled down the pavement with his face down.

Bompat narrated that while he was talking with some friends in front of the office of the Bohol Environment and Management Office (BEMO) along Marapao Street past 4 o'clock Monday afternoon, a person whom he identified as Cesar Goloso approached him and without any provocation boxed him in the face. Bompat said that a metal object was placed in the hand of the suspect which caused the severe injury.

Witnesses said that Goloso arrived at the scene onboard a motorcycle driven by a certain Jongjong Garcia. Both are known members of the task force created under the office of Mayor Lim.

However, Mark Monton, top aide of the city mayor denied that Goloso is a member of the task force. He said that Goloso is a regular employee of the city hall who was hired during the term of former Mayor Joe Torralba.

The suspect, after hitting Bompat, fled onboard another motorcycle waiting nearby.

During an interview with Bompat at the GCGRH emergency room, he called on Mayor Lim to surrender Goloso to the police since he is identified closely with the mayor.

Bompat said he did not have any personal conflict with the suspect.

"I will seek justice on this incident," he declared as he raised the question: "After me, who's next?"

The reason why this happened was a "clear move to silence me as a broadcaster" since he recently commented on some legitimate issues against the city government during his radio program "Luyo sa Balita" over radio station dyRD.

For a week now, radio commentators identified with Mayor Lim and commentators identified with Gov. Edgar Chatto have been on verbal tussle "on air" on issues confronting the governance of both the city and provincial governments.

"Since there was nothing personal against Goloso", Bompat questioned why this has to happen.

It may be recalled that both Goloso and Garcia were the same persons mentioned by Nestor Daarol, another broadcaster who was threatened by the duo a few months before the May elections this year.

The incident involving the 62-year old Bompat generated criticism from the public.

"It was an affront to press freedom," stressed Peter Dejaresco, general manager of Bohol Chronicle Radio Corporation who said that "justice should be given to the member of the press."

Bompat's case came as the fourth incident involving local media personalities.

The first one was the attempted arson at the residence of broadcaster Roberto "Batchoy" Alba, the throwing of dirty water on the face of broadcaster Daarol inside the booth of dyTR and the power disconnection at the residences of broadcaster Jerry Pabe and technician Gerry Cajes, all connected with dyRD, the radio station which air legitimate issues confronting the city mayor.

Bompat is set to file charges against Goloso while the suspect remains at large.

EDCOM HEAD ISSUES
STATEMENT

Meanwhile, EDCom head Augustus "Tootsie" Escobia in a written statement expressed hope for justice and speedy resolution of the incident adding that "Because for us…if this is attained it will not just be a victory for Richard, to the ordinary people, or to all media practitioners and believers but for the entire people of Bohol".

Escobia issued the statement following the incident which happened a day preceding the anniversary of the Maguindanao massacre. He likewise hope and pray "that freedom of expression and respect to human lives still exist and will continue to exist in our beloved province".

A road construction worker, the second of at least four suspects in the killing of a British owner of a resort in Negros Occidental, was arrested Friday.

National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) agents arrested Josemarie Pahayahay, 30, in Toboso town in Negros Occidental for the killing of Anthony Nicholas.

Pahayahay is the second suspect arrested for the robbery and killing of Nicholas, 65, in Sipalay City last Sept. 6, news site Visayan Daily Star reported Saturday.

Authorities had arrested Claro Barcoma, 40, last Sept. 11 for illegal possession of a firearm.

Still at large are Dennis Marquez a.k.a. "Randy", and a certain "Toto."

Kabankalan Regional Trial Court Judge Henry Arles had ordered all four arrested, without bail.

Killed for beer

Pahayahay said two of his companions killed Nicholas because he refused to give them money to buy beer.

He said the two gunmen were acquaintances of Barcoma, his neighbor in Barangay 2, Sipalay City.

He also said he was surprised to hear four gunshots, claiming that he was some distance away when their two companions allegedly shot and robbed Nicholas.

"The two fled after the shooting and we met up at the seashore where they gave me P100 and told me not to tell anybody what happened or my family would be killed," Pahayahay said.

"I was afraid so I went to Toboso," he added.

He said one of the gunmen, who was from Guimaras, was dark-complexioned and had a scar on his face and spoke Waray.

The other one was described as being from Iloilo and short, white, and good-looking.

Pahayahay also denied that they were hired to kill Nicholas.

Nicholas was shot dead while driving his tricycle home with his wife Judith Grijaldo Nicholas, 60, and their helper in Sitio Matlag, Barangay 4, Sipalay City, at about 7 p.m. of Sept. 6.

Mrs. Nicholas had said that after the armed men shot her husband, they pointed their guns at her, and asked for her mobile phone.

When she could not pull it out of her bag fast enough, she said she told her helper to instead hand the men their bag containing P20,000. - GMA 7 News

She survived seven hours in a pitch-black pit, enduring 24 stab wounds in the chest and back and a bullet wound in the right leg.

Now confined at the Laguna provincial hospital, panting under an oxygen mask, police informant Grace Capistrano could only nod when asked if she and her baby were okay. She is four months pregnant.

She could not speak, but was able to roll over to show her wounds.

Her father, Raul Capistrano, described his eldest daughter as “maligalig” (wild) but strong, and said he was grateful that she and her child emerged alive from the ordeal.

At around 7 p.m. on Wednesday, PO2 Mario Natividad and PO1 Antenor Mariquit picked up Capistrano, 23, from her house in Angono, Rizal. They shoved her into a car and tied her hands behind her with duct tape.

She was repeatedly stabbed when she and her captors were on their way to Laguna, said Senior Superintendent Gilbert Cruz, police director of the province.

At Barangay Pinagsangjan in Pagsanjan, the cops pushed Capistrano out of the car and she rolled down a ravine off the road. They shot her in the leg and drove away, Cruz said.

Amazing strength

Farmer Mariano Pelayo, whose hut is about 50 meters from where the cops left Capistrano, said he was waiting for the lottery draw on TV when he heard gunfire.

“But I thought it was nothing. I just ignored it and went to sleep,” Pelayo, 78, told the Inquirer.

Capistrano’s knock awakened the farmer and his wife at around 4 a.m. on Thursday.

Pelayo said he found Capistrano on his doorstep with “blood all over her.”

He said she told him she had many wounds and asked to be taken to a hospital: “Tatang, dalhin nyo po ako sa ospital, marami po akong sugat.”

The farmer said it took an hour before a jeepney passed and the driver agreed to help take Capistrano to the Pagsanjan police station in the town proper.

Pelayo said Capistrano must have crawled up the bushy ravine thinking that the sound of dogs barking meant that there was a house nearby.

Amazed at how Capistrano survived, he said: “That girl was so strong. She could still walk and talk [despite her wounds], and she was even pregnant. She just asked for three glasses of water,” Pelayo said.

‘Hulidap’

Capistrano was a “witness” to the hulidap rackets (robbery and extortion) of policemen in Rizal, according to Calabarzon police director Chief Superintendent Samuel Pagdilao Jr.

Mariquit is based in the Cainta police station; Natividad was recently assigned to Rizal province from the regional police office.

Laguna police director Cruz quoted reports saying that Capistrano was “an informant of the hulidap.”

But he said he did not know the relationship between Capistrano on one hand and Mariquit and Natividad on the other.

Raul Capistrano was surprised to learn about his daughter’s “job.”

“I didn’t know she was close to policemen. We rarely see each other, and I’m really not privy to her activities,” he said.

The father apparently lived separately from the family, and his eldest daughter grew up with her grandparents.

He said he had not met the man who had sired the baby in her womb, or even the father of her other child.

He described her as a wild one who often hung out with her barkada (gang), but in whom he had seen a brave streak: “Maligalig yan pero nakitaan ko ng tapang.”

The 33-year old man was caught in Naujan town sexually abusing a pig but the swine’s owner opted not to file charges, the report said, quoting Police Inspector Ruel Fronda, chief of the Victoria police station.

The married suspect moved from Naujan to Victoria after the incident, the DZIQ report added.

A broadcaster has filed before the Department of Justice (DOJ) a criminal complaint for illegal detention against the the city prosecutor of Dipolog, the city police chief and some local officials.

Ryan Duga-duga Uy, reporter-broadcaster of radio station DXFL-FM, also asked the DOJ to conduct a preliminary investigation against the City Prosecutor of Dipolog City, as well as the city police director Supt. Reynaldo Maclang and some local government officials.

In his complaint, Uy said that he lost trust and confidence in the City Prosecutor's Office of Dipolog, headed by Prosecutor Felix Rendoque.

Uy stressed that his rights were violated under DOJ Circular Order No. 61 after he was denied of his constitutional right to due process of law for alleged violation of Section 20 of Republic Act 9165, otherwise known as the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.

The complaint stated that on Oct. 29, 2010 three unidentified men allegedly blocked the path of the broadcaster, mauled him, framed him up and detained him at the police detention cell in Dipolog City.

After the lapse of 84 hours, Uy said, no charges were filed against him, adding that, there was no sufficient basis to substantiate the charges filed later against him.

Uy claimed he was detained illegally based on the affidavit submitted by Zamboanga del Norte Gov. Rolando Yebes.

In his affidavit, Yebes said that the mauling incident and the arrest made against Uy were not recorded in the police blotter, including the injuries sustained by the broadcaster. (PNA)

The Philippine economy expanded by 6.5 percent in the third quarter from 0.2 percent in the same period last year due to high confidence of investors’ and consumers in a regime of benign inflation, according to the National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB).

The NSCB also revised the gross domestic product (GDP) in the second quarter to 8.2 percent from an earlier 7.9 percent growth.

The economy grew 7.5 percent in the first nine months of the year.

Romulo A. Virola, NSCB secretary general, told reporters that the honeymoon third quarter growth for President Aquino is the highest when compared with 0.4 percent for President Ramos, negative 0.7 percent for President Estrada, and 1.3 percent and 5.6 percent for the first and second terms, respectively, of President Arroyo.

Virola said that services regained the driver seat as the prime mover of economic growth with the robust performances of trade, ownership of dwelling and real estate, private services and finance.

Industry, on the other hand, failed to sustain its remarkable performance during the first semester even as manufacturing continued its recovery in response to the improved domestic and external demand, and private sector-led construction activities almost doubled from a year ago.

"The fourth consecutive quarter of El Niño-driven decline in agriculture, the diminished spending by the government, and the substantial deceleration of mining and quarrying contributed to the slowdown in economic growth," Virola said. - PNA

Philippine Daily News / Update of the Vizconde Massacre
November 26, 2010, 10:23:06 PM
The Supreme Court (SC) on Friday vehemently denied allegations made by Lauro Vizconde that an incumbent associate justice is trying to influence his colleagues to come out with a ruling favorable to Hubert Webb, one of the individuals convicted in the sensational rape-massacre case.

SC spokesperson Atty. Jose Midas Marquez made the statement after Vizconde publicly identified Associate Justice Antonio Carpio in a radio program as the magistrate allegedly lobbying in favor of Webb, who is presently seeking for reopening and retrial of the 19-year-old case.

Marquez called on Vizconde and all parties concerned to refrain from issuing baseless assertions.

”The case is about to be resolved anytime now. So we call on the parties to refrain from issuing unsubstantiated claims," the SC spokesperson stressed.

While not recommending it, Marquez pointed out that Vizconde can bring his concerns against Carpio before the SC Ethics Committee.

"He is free to do whatever he wants to do. While we sympathize with him, any allegations brought out should be substantiated," Marquez added.

Marquez said it is unthinkable for Carpio to influence his fellow justices because in the first place, Carpio already inhibited himself from the celebrated case since it was brought to the SC En Banc several years ago.

"We don’t want to dignify this issue. This is just pure speculation. In fact, he (Carpio) already inhibited (himself from the case)," Marquez concluded. (PNA)

Manny Pacquiao is not simply the best boxer in the world. He's also the sport's biggest box office attraction.

Pacquiao's comprehensive destruction of Antonio Margarito for a vacant junior middleweight title on Nov. 13 at Cowboys Stadium generated at least 1.15 million buys and $64 million domestic revenue, according to figures announced Tuesday by HBO Sports.

Those numbers are expected to increase slightly once all the figures are counted, but Pacquiao already is assured of his third straight year with at least one fight breaking the 1 million mark.

"It wasn't even on the right-hand side of the computer spreadsheet," said HBO vice president Mark Taffet, whose job includes handling pay-per-view broadcasts, when asked whether the numbers exceeded his expectations. "It's an outstanding number."

Pacquiao's victory over Oscar De La Hoya in 2008 generated 1.25 million buys, and his knockout of Miguel Cotto last year did 1.2 million. Taffet said his last five fights combined have generated at least 5.1 million buys, putting Pacquiao on par with De La Hoya, Evander Holyfield, Mike Tyson and Floyd Mayweather Jr. as the biggest earners in pay-per-view history.

Of that group, the Filipino icon is the only non-American.

"He's become a world figure, that's what differentiates it from the superstars that preceded him," Taffet said. "And his coverage is not just in sports media. He's transcended sport, to the point where he's the first non-American to generate these kinds of numbers."

Acupuncture alleviates pain and improves movement for patients suffering from it, whether it is arthritis of the knee, hip, shoulder, hand or back. The effectiveness applies to both rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and osteoarthritis (OA) conditions, and treatments focus on controlling the painful symptoms as well as balancing the immune system. The majority of our patients see immediate results after just a few treatments and experience positive long-term benefits in combination with Chinese formulas and regular exercise. - click here to learn more...

November 23, 2010, 12:20:55 PM
At least 345 people have been killed in a stampede during festival celebrations in the Cambodian capital, Phnom Penh, Prime Minister Hun Sen has said.

Huge crowds had gathered on a small island for the final day of the Water Festival, one of the main events of the year in Cambodia.

The stampede took place on a bridge, which eyewitnesses said had become overcrowded.

Hundreds more people were injured in the crush.

Hun Sen described the stampede as the "biggest tragedy" to hit Cambodia since the mass killings carried out by the Khmer Rouge regime in the 1970s.

He said he had ordered an investigation and declared a national day of mourning for later in the week. He ordered all government ministries to fly the nation's flag at half-mast. - BBC

U.S. stocks ended mixed on Monday after Ireland formally requested a bailout as contagious fears were still lingering in the market.

The Dow Jones industrial average tumbled about 150 points in morning trading after an EU source said a total of 80 billion to 90 billion euros might not be enough to backstop Irish banks or stop similar runs on assets in heavily indebted countries.

Ireland, whose debt problems weighed on the market in past weeks, asked European Unions for loans during weekend, once giving a boost to the euro. However, enthusiasm about the deal soon melted away as investors once again focused on other stressed euro- zone countries, such as Spain and Portugal.

Meanwhile, financial stocks were under great pressure after FBI raided some investment firms, seeking documents related to hedge fund inside trading.

Goldman Sachs was one of the S&P 500's biggest losers, with shares tumbling 3.37 percent on a report over the weekend that investigators are looking at possible insider trading allegations tied to the firm's dealings in transactions including a health- care merger.

The Nasdaq composite managed to finish in positive area. Computer giant Hewlett-Packard released its results for the fiscal fourth quarter ended October after the market closed, which topped Wall Street estimates. - source: PNA

"Whenever we see a piece of high quality contemporary jewellery, we jump on it," says Francois Curiel, head of Christie's jewellery department.

"Our clients search out one-of-a-kind pieces that impress you visually with their exquisite beauty and hold an allure for their unique design," says Nazgol Jahan, worldwide jewellery director at auctioneers Phillips de Pury, which has held solo exhibitions of artist jewellers, Daniel Brush and Frederic Zaavy.

Mr [Viren Bhagat] regularly sells precious pieces via e-mailed sketches. He maintains that jewellery is a profitable long-term investment. "One of my clients told me that three years ago 60 per cent of his wealth was tied up in the stock market. Today, that figure is 20 per cent and he is looking to jewellery to make up the difference," says Mr Bhagat.

The move, which came despite broad stock market losses Tuesday, is a response to stronger-than-expected demand for shares in the auto maker, which is generating solid profits after last year's U.S. government-orchestrated bankruptcy. The U.S. Treasury, GM and its underwriters felt recent stock market declines wouldn't deter investors, a person familiar with the discussions said. - source: Wall Street Journal

Fears of imminent rate increase starting with China sparked massive sell-off across Asian stock markets today. Early morning, reports about Bank of China increasing rates to contain inflation provoked selling on the Shanghai Stock Exchange. Panic soon gripped other Asian bourses. Selling was more furious in Tokyo, Hong Kong and Dalal Street. The benchmark 30-share Sensitive Index of the Bombay Stock Exchange plunged below 20,000 level which some analysts tend to explain away as overdue correction. The Sensex ended with a huge loss of 444.55 points or 2.19 per cent at 19,865.14. Selling was more pronounced in the broader market that is on the National Stock Exchange. The CNX Nifty declined by 132.90 points or down 2.17 per cent to close at 5,988.70. The Nifty also declined under 6,000 mark. On the NSE 1,197 shares declined and 169 advanced. In Sensex 10 advanced, 19 were down and one static. The markets posted the biggest volume in recent times at over Rs 2.13 lakh crore consisiting of Nifty F&O and BSE, NSE cash segments. China remained the epicentre of Tuesday's tremors. The government there, it was reported, is to soon announce steps to curb inflation by increasing bank rates. - source: The Statesman (India)

Capital markets are central to business formation and economic growth, and if listings are falling, that is a sign there is not the same level of capital formation as there was in the past. Some critics say the incredible shrinking stock market is one of the unexpected results of regulations like the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002, which have increased companies' legal bills. - New York Times, source

Asia | Middle East / Update on China Stock Market
November 22, 2010, 07:38:43 PM
There is other evidence of a maturing market. Consider the A/H spread - or the price of H-shares in Hong Kong relative to their equivalent A-shares in Shanghai. From 2006 to 2009, mainland stocks traded at an average premium of 31 per cent to the more liberal offshore market. Since the beginning of this year, though, the average gap has narrowed to 6 per cent; since July it has fluctuated between a premium and a discount. - Financial Times

Pessimism is rampant today and it is misplaced. The specter of inflation has been replaced by fear of a trio of other dire prospects: deflation and financial collapse, the long and painful unwinding of an economy that has gorged on borrowed money, and the prospect of millions of baby-boomers selling their stocks to finance an increasingly bleak future. But predictions warning that the wave of baby-boomers entering retirement will lead to the liquidation of stocks and a collapse of values are flawed. Emerging economies account for 85% of the world's population. History shows that pessimists, no matter how fashionable, have always been wrong about long-term prospects for the US economy and the stock market. - source: Jeremy J Siegel. For the majority of Americans, the old rules for maximizing deductions to lower your tax bill for 2010 still apply. In 2010, workers can contribute up to $16,500 to employer-based retirement plans, and workers 50 and older can contribute up to $22,000. Anyone, regardless of income, can now convert a traditional retirement account to a Roth IRA, but only those who do so by Dec 31, 2010 will have the added benefit of splitting the tax bill on the conversion between their 2011 and 2012 tax returns. If you choose the split, the conversion will not increase your 2010 income. Meanwhile, Congress temporarily suspended required minimum distributions from IRAs and other retirement accounts until the stock market bounced back. The enhanced American Opportunity Credit for undergraduates also expires at the end of 2010. - source: Mary Beth Franklin. Kiplinger's Personal Finance. Washington: Dec 2010. Vol. 64, Iss. 12; pg. 1
