i don't know why i never tire of having my eyes wet every time i read this poem (and i've read this many times; wa lang gyod koy kopya sa libro karon mao nga di nako ma-post ang tibuok balak).  ambot bitaw; wa man unta mohagtok akong bagulbagul, wa man ko makakita sa among inahan nga nihagtok ang iyang bagulbagul...

maybe it's just the feeling that something in me knows this can happen or is happening to someone else, and i can never reach out to her even just to assure her that pansit in one's hair is just as good as pansit on the plate.

i also wonder if i could ever tell her to just make sure that next time she cooks pansit for that kind of husband, she adds racumin to the recipe, please. ;D
#36205
nakabasa na man ko aning balak ni yakieye nga Ang Pansit in a book and had looked for it in the internet last night hoping i could post it here.  no such luck.  partial lang akong nakit-an, as follows, which is part of the introduction of his Dili Tanang Matagak Mahagbong book of poems:

Ang Pansit â€" nga maoy ikaduhang balak ni Durado nga akong nabasa â€" matawag og uylap sa dughan ug dili sakdap sa utok, apan ang nagdul-it sa kahapdos sa gihubit nga sitwasyon, nga daw lab-as nga samad nga wa pa kadapatig tambal, mao ang way kampat nga pagbahig sa mga detalye:

Mahadlok ko sauna
kung gutumon si Papa, Ma.
Dili na siya mokaon.
Ang platong gisudlan nimo
sa sud-an mokalit lag hagtok

nimong danguyngoy
gipuga sa atong bintana
ang limonsitong buwan.

Tan-awa, napiskan hinuon akong mata. Sa akong paminaw, kuwanggol ray di kahilak ining balaka.

Gawas sa yanong mga pulong nga gigamit, nakabig ang akong pagtagad sa buot sa persona. Kinsay namulong? Bata? Hingkod?

sorry to wake you up, lorenz.  yes, she's pretty, and in this particular picture, obviously thanks to photoshop, good makeup, and good photography and editing, she almost looks like angelina jolie.  but she's not that sexy in reality.  she's huge and not that curvy, taking after her mom and grandmom.

more so in the philippines, lorenz, when some items have different prices for purchases with cash or with a credit card.

i've become a familiar face in a certain bank (my source of this credit card; it goes with the deposit) when i told them once (with much drama) to never charge me for service over an unused credit card.  they waived the annual fees, much to my joy.

Ronnie Scelson is currently one of the most notorious spammers in the world. He claims to have covert agreements (sometimes referred to as pink agreements) with ISPs to allow him to send the 84,000,000 pieces of junk e-mail per day that he claims to. Typical of spammers/virus authors, he sees nothing wrong with his "business".

a lot of these spam bots also provide links to virus-filled sites, which can hack into one's computer and steal one's identity. worst case scenario, they can track and steal your banking information if you made online-purchases and deplete your banking funds.

hehe, glad i never did.  sometimes, being unsophisticated has its rewards.  i don't know though if it was a reward when i called once for a hotel reservation (from another country), the telephone number of which i got from the internet.  they asked for my credit card number, i said i never give my credit card to strangers.  (truth be told, i consider the credit card that i have as non-existent; never used it, never will.)  that ended my sought-for reservation, hahaha!

Thief Spammer

Sets up a webpage/portal that looks exactly like that of a well known company.

Sends out spam mail to this companies customers advising them to update their payment information or billing details.

The customer responds to this by going to the website and entering their login or credit card details.

The spammer then uses the acquired information to perform other illegal activities as the new identity.

A terminology exists for these activities. They are known as "Email Phishing" or "Spoofing" and "Identity Theft".

In this section, we look into the Profile of a Spammer to learn What makes spammers tick? Why do they get involved in the "business" of sending spam? A closer look at the world of the spammer was needed.

Interestingly enough, research revealed that the profile of a spammer does not differ that much from the profile of a virus creator. They share common traits and personality characteristics that, once read, won't really surprise you at all.

What is spam?

Spam is flooding the Internet with many copies of the same message, in an attempt to force the message on people who would not otherwise choose to receive it. Most spam is commercial advertising, often for dubious products, get-rich-quick schemes, or quasi-legal services. Spam costs the sender very little to send -- most of the costs are paid for by the recipient or the carriers rather than by the sender. (http://spam.abuse.net/)

a certain thread in another TB childboard is a spammer named etrade.  the thread is now locked by the webmaster with the curt: 'etrade is a spammer. account is deleted. the signatures contained links with trojan virus. thread closed.'

far from being a techie myself, this set me thinking... will i ever know what's in the minds, never mind the hearts, of spammers and why some of them carry viruses?  are they megalomaniacs out for world domination like the villains of 007 films, or do they simply have the instincts of serial killers?

it's been months since i opened my email address, that's why.  it's been hacked.  i know it's been hacked because some friends had revealed that they've been getting sleazy materials from me and they're wondering whether i've already been employed by hugh hefner as his latest bunny.  (ugh.  despite his having been reported as dead many times and as many times he's been resurrected, i doubt if he would mistake a tarsier for a bunny.)

thus my techie grade 1 section 10 education starts.

Ex-envoy arrested

By Cecille Suerte Felipe
The Philippine Star
February 16, 2012 12:00 AM

MANILA, Philippines - Former ambassador Francisco “Paqui” Ortigas III was arrested yesterday by the police on a complaint of concubinage filed by Madrigal heiress Susana Ba-yot, his wife of 43 years.

Ortigas, 67, was arrested by operatives of the Southern Metro Manila-Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) armed with a warrant of arrest issued by Pasig Metropolitan Trial Court Branch 72 Judge Joy Nerves Casihan-Dumlao.

The former ambassador to Mexico had just come from a meeting with his lawyers at the Tektite Towers at the family-developed Ortigas business district in Pasig City when policemen led by Chief Inspector Bernouly Abalos picked him up.

Abalos said Ortigas and his lawyers Alfred Molo and Elizabeth Loriega voluntarily went with them to work on posting bail of P10,000 for his temporary liberty.

“He (Ortigas) did not resist arrest and cooperated with the police,” he said.

Ba-yot accused her husband and his personal secretary Ma. Antonia Legarda of concubinage.  Both Ortigas and Legarda have denied the allegations.

“Judge Dumlao signed the warrant on Tuesday and we were furnished a copy.  We served the warrant (of arrest) at his office.  Our only function is to account for a person with warrant of arrest,” Abalos explained.

Abalos said Ortigas was booked, photographed and fingerprinted at the CIDG office in Pasig City as part of police procedure.

Following his arrest, Ortigas issued a statement to the media.

“He doesn’t like to be interviewed by the media, that is his policy since the beginning,” Loriega explained.

Ortigas said in his statement: "I am saddened by having to endure the course of events, which continue to turn a private matter between me and my wife Susana Ortigas into a public spectacle."

Ortigas said his arrest "was so obviously designed to ensure my public humiliation.  Thus it would be only logical for me to expect my detractors, who include a cabal of individuals out to please my wife, will continue to exhaust all means in their attempts to malign my person."

“And those vicious attacks against me manifest how these people are evidently devoid of the basic ethics or morals found in cultured, educated individuals of a civilized society,” he said.

"Allow me to reiterate, as far as I’m concerned, that this is a purely private matter, which refined and civilized individuals avoid elucidating on.  Thus, it is my fervent hope that the public will understand my preference to keep silent on the matter."

“But my silence should not be misconstrued as my waiving my right to clear my name at the appropriate time.”

Molo added Ortigas was “surprised” by his arrest but is “determined to fight this all way to the end.”

Ortigas is a scion of the Ortigas clan, which owns large tracts of land in the east of Metro Manila. Ortigas & Co. is the developer of Greenhills Shopping Center in San Juan City. â€" Aie Balagtas See

French man wins dog in custody battle with ex-girlfriend

Agence France-Presse
Thursday, February 16th, 2012

MARSEILLE, Franceâ€"A French man has won custody of a black terrier named Poupette (Dolly) following a legal battle with his ex-girlfriend who asked a court to award her the dog after their break-up.

The man’s lawyer, Isabelle Terrin, said Wednesday that a judge near the southern city of Marseille had ruled that Poupette could be considered property and the man’s previous possession of the dog entitled him to remain her owner.

The girlfriend, identified by the court as Edith, had given the dog to the man, identified as Jean-Marie, as a puppy during their relationship.  When they split up 15 months later she insisted he return the dog and went to court.

Terrin said she had argued that under French property laws Jean-Marie was entitled to keep Poupette since the dog has always stayed with him and he and his girlfriend had never lived together.

The judge concluded that Jean-Marie “took perfect care of the animal,” Terrin said, adding that her client was “relieved” by the ruling.

“The animal’s best interests were taken into account and that is for the best,” she said.

Edith was also ordered to pay her ex-boyfriend’s court costs.

all in all, i must admit that the metric system is easier and more universal.  but try saying 'kilometrage' instead of 'mileage', or 'hectarage' instead of 'acreage'.  these, too, need getting used to.  sometimes, some things just won't go away...

in the late '70s and early '80s, when the metric system became official in our country, one can still buy cloths with a choice of measurement of either yards or meters, the yards being cheaper because they're shorter.  and we continued to be more comfortable with our heights and weights measured in inches and pounds.  (mao nay mestizo, bisan sa measurements saksak-sinagol.)

it was also the time when the name of "metro manila" was conceived, the time when former first lady imelda marcos became governor of the cities and municipalities contiguous to the capital city that is manila, and thus were lumped as one metropolitan center.

the joke that went around then was we're truly having the metric system, like metro manila (the metro cebu monicker came later; and we can see that until now there's no such thing as a metro cebu governor or chairman or whatever), and metro carcar, metro ayungon, metro dimiao, metro valencia, etc.

8/29/1916 Philippines adopts metric system after Philippine Autonomy Act signed.
1916-1975 Various measurement systems employed with metric system being prominent.
1/1/1975 Date set for sole metric system use via Presidential Decree No. 187.
7/16/1975 Presidential Decree No. 748 amends PD No. 187 to extend metrication efforts.
1/1/1983 Philippines officially adopts the metric system via Batas Pambansa Bilang 8.
4/13/1992 Philippine use of metric system reinforced via Republic Act 7394.

History / Re: History Lesson - Decimal Day (1971)
February 16, 2012, 04:15:16 PM
From its beginning, the main feature of the metric system was the standard set of inter-related base units and a standard set of prefixes in powers of ten.  These base units are used to derive larger and smaller units and replaced a huge number of unstandardised units of measure that existed previously.  While the system was first developed for commercial use, its coherent set of units made it particularly suitable for scientific and engineering purposes.

The uncoordinated use of the metric system by different scientific and engineering disciplines, particularly in the late 19th century, resulted in different choices of fundamental units, even though all were based on the same definitions of the metre and the kilogram.  During the 20th century, efforts were made to rationalise these units and in 1960 the CGPM published the International System of Units ("Système international d'unités" in French, hence "SI") which, since then, has been the internationally recognised standard metric system.

no wonder the u.s. still has "miles" instead of "kilometers".  where i once was, where "miles" was used and not "kilometers", i had to mark down the speed limits in miles in different areas by converting them to kilometers because our vehicle's speedometer was in kilometers.  :(

The United States is the only industrialized country that does not use the metric system as its official system of measurement, although the use of the metric system has been officially sanctioned for use there since 1866.  Although the United Kingdom committed to officially adopting the metric system for many measurement applications, it is still not in universal use there and the customary imperial system is still in common and widespread use.  Although the originators intended to devise a system that was equally accessible to all, it proved necessary to use prototype units under the custody of government or other approved authorities as standards.  Until 1875, control of the prototype units of measure was maintained by the French Government when it passed to an inter-governmental organisation â€" the Conférence générale des poids et mesures (CGPM).  It is now hoped that the last of these prototypes can be retired by 2014.

"The metric system is for all people for all time." (Condorcet 1791)  Four objects used in making measurements that have metric calibrations are shown.  Three of the objects, a tape measure calibrated in centimetres, a thermometer calibrated in degrees Celsius and a kilogram weight are for domestic use while the fourth, an electrical multimeter which measures volts, amps and ohms, is for normal use by tradesmen.

in relation to the decimal day...

The metric system is an international decimalised system of measurement that was originally based on the mètre des archives and the kilogramme des archives introduced by France in 1799.  Over the years the definitions of the metre and kilogram have been refined and the metric system extended to incorporate many more units. Although a number of variants of the metric system emerged in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries the term is now often used as a synonym for the "International System of Units" - the official system of measurement in almost every country in the world.

(hi, etrade.  welcome!)

the difference between the two is that the woman in the second picture has a heavier makeup.  the most obvious difference of course is that they are two different women.  you will agree, i hazard a guess, that the two can pass off as northern indians, right?  i think some of your bollywood actresses are as pretty as they are.

while it's true that the phrase "it's more fun" is nobody's copyright, mas fit man gyod hinoon siya sa switzerland kay naay euphony gamay; gamay ra hinoon, pero ang 'n' ug 'fun' ug '-land' medyo nisibo, mora hinoon ug ni-rhyme, dugangan pa nga liquid consonant ang 'l' sa 'land'.  we cannot say the same thing about the '-ines' in philippines.

hehe, ambot lang kaha, mol.  i'm flattered by your suggestion, though.  ang kuyaw lang kun mapareha unya ko ni kanhing natalio bacalso sa cebu nga tungod kay naglisod na siyag ending sa iyang ngilngig nga estorya (the usual travail of scriptwriters), iya na lang gipasakay ang tanang characters sa iyang estorya ug barko padung sa leyte, unya gipalunod ang barko.  the end.  naa poy usa, iyang gipaadto sa sementeryo sa talisay ang tanang characters, dayon gibombahan ang sementeryo sa iyang estorya.  the end. ;D
#36298
thanks, fr chic.  malipay sad baya kong magpalandong nga medyo suwerte ko kay gawas pa nga believer kog prayers, i treasured, and devoured, the greek literary classics (wa na lang sa akong unusual interest in our bible's job and his tears).  bisan tuod ug morag hanap-hanap na nako ang ubang detailed stories karon, nagpabilin gyod ang idea that sometimes human tragedies befall us because of our human frailties.

i must say that this particular friend of mine had always been willful and daring.  para nako, mao ni ang usa sa mga rason nga nagkapangka-pangka siya.  i told her before to please rest her weary heart first; ayaw una ug relate.  pahuway usa.  ay, bisan kinsa na man hinoong lalaki iyang suklan.

ay, kun movie scriptwriter pa ko, arang kadaghan nakog maistoryang sugilanon.  di gyod hinoon pang-bourne legacy.  pang-kris aquino hinoon. ;D
#36300
fastforward.  she later got married to a man who truly cared for her, had 2 daughters, and for some years seemed to have gotten the emotional stability that evaded her for years.

one day she came to visit, and her language had changed.  i mean, nagsige na man ug panaway sa pinas.  suko ko.  hoy, i said, hilom aron di ta ka ipa-deport.  (that's how we talk; no holds barred.)  maayo man gyod siyang tawo intawon.  besides, pareha baya mig reklamo; ang kasaba sa simbahan kun misa.  di ta kapangadye ug tarong.  mas daghan lang siyag reklamo kay sa nako kay hasta salesgirls iya mang panawayon.  kinahanglan ug dugay-dugay pang adjustment, hehe.

problema lang, karon, she discovered that her husband has another family.  and a son.  (she had daughters with him.)  i don't know how she's coping now.  she had wanted a divorce and had asked her husband to leave; tubag ra man pod kuno ang bana nga iya baya pod ang ilang balay.  in other words, he does not want a divorce.  i trust in that friend's courage.  she had survived one tragedy before, she'll survive this one too.  i hope.  but, yes, she initially got married to another man for citizenship's sake.
