Inspiration & Hope / Slow Dance
September 08, 2012, 10:36:10 PM
By David L. Weatherhead

Have you ever watched kids on a merry-go-round, or listened to rain slapping the ground?
Ever followed a butterfly's erratic flight, or gazed at the sun fading into the night?
You better slow down, don't dance so fast, time is short, the music won't last.

Do you run through each day on the fly, when you ask "How are you?", do you hear the reply?
When the day is done, do you lie in your bed, with the next hundred chores running through your head?
You better slow down, don't dance so fast, time is short, the music won't last.

Ever told your child, we'll do it tomorrow, and in your haste, not see his sorrow?
Ever lost touch, let a friendship die, 'cause you never had time to call and say hi?
You better slow down, don't dance so fast, time is short, the music won't last.

When you run so fast to get somewhere, you miss half the fun of getting there.
When you worry and hurry through your day, it's like an unopened gift thrown away.
Life isn't a race, so take it slower, hear the music before your song is over.

Associated Press/Nam Y. Huh - President Barack Obama greets with his supporters as he leaves during the grassroots event at University of Iowa on Friday, Sept. 7, 2012.
#36211
Others, however, argue that the Obama administration has calmed tensions overseas with Russian, China and other countries that eyed the American invasion of Iraq with suspicion.

"Everyone was afraid that Iraq meant that whenever we thought it was a good idea to bring democracy to a country by force we would do it," said James Lewis, a Washington-based national security expert, now with the Center for Strategic and International Studies. Through diplomatic efforts by the Obama administration, he said that "that level of fear has been tamped down. The global perception of the U.S. is better."

Lewis agreed that Iran may be the one place where the U.S. is no better off than it was four years ago, but he said things are stagnant, not worse. But he blamed the lack of progress on the Iranians and their refusal to engage.

Still, tensions with China continue over its growing military, its cyberactivities and the territorial disputes in the South China Sea. A trip to China this week by Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton highlighted ongoing friction between Washington and Beijing.

But Clinton and other U.S. officials say that despite the routine disagreements, they can now discuss the issues more freely and frankly with the Chinese, unlike in recent years, when communications were difficult and rare.

"We have strengthened our alliances around the world to protect against future threats, locked down nuclear materials and improved our homeland defenses," said Tommy Vietor, spokesman for the National Security Council. "The U.S. is absolutely safer now than four years ago." -- http://news.yahoo.com/
#36212
Still, other international dangers remain. Ongoing efforts to dissuade Iran from developing nuclear capabilities have not worked. And as Israel's worries about the nuclear threat grow, the possibility of U.S. involvement in an Israeli strike against Iran has become a front-burner issue.

Defense officials are wary of China's military growth, and the U.S. intelligence community has accused the communist giant for systematically stealing American high-tech data through computer-based attacks. U.S. officials and security experts also are increasingly warning that the United States is highly vulnerable to cyberattacks â€" including one that could take down the electric grid, financial networks or energy plants.

Republicans say Obama has failed to slow Iran's nuclear program, saying that it could spark an arms race across the Middle East and that it poses the greatest threat to the U.S. and its allies.

Sen. John McCain, the leading Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee, told his party's national convention that Obama missed an opportunity by not supporting a revolution in Iran.

"For four years, we've drifted away from our proudest traditions of global leadership," McCain said. "We are now being tested by an array of threats that are more complex, more numerous and just as deeply and deadly as I can recall in my lifetime."

In some cases, the Obama White House simply continued or escalated programs and policies begun by the Republican administration of George W. Bush. But Obama implemented a more aggressive drone campaign to target top terror leaders, broadening efforts to help at-risk nations beef up their own defenses, and implemented plans to end the war in Iraq and bring troops out of Afghanistan.

As a result, terrorism worries have taken a back seat to the nation's economic woes.

Unlike previous elections, national security is not a big campaign issue this year. Mitt Romney made no mention of terrorism or war during his acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention last week. Although public opposition to the war in Afghanistan has grown, it's not a top dinner table topic for most Americans.

"I would have said four years ago that the al-Qaida movement was emerging as a bigger problem, especially with the emergence of affiliates in places like Yemen and with the spike in homegrown attacks," said Phil Mudd, a senior counterterrorism official at the CIA and FBI during the Bush and Obama administrations. "But I would say today that al-Qaidaism is on the decline. By any balance, the number of places where people want to come after us has declined in the past four years."

Mudd, now a senior research fellow at the nonpartisan New America Foundation, said that while militants in other countries may still be causing problems in their own areas, they are less likely to "be sitting there saying how do we get to Los Angeles, and that's a big change."

Terror takes back seat; Americans safer now
By LOLITA C. BALDOR | Associated Press â€" 6 hrs ago

WASHINGTON (AP) â€" As Americans debate whether they are better off now than they were four years ago, there is another question with a somewhat easier answer: Are you safer now than you were when President Barack Obama took office?

By most measures, the answer is yes.

More than a decade after terrorists slammed planes into the World Trade Center in New York, the Pentagon and the Pennsylvania countryside, Americans have stopped fretting daily about a possible attack or stockpiling duct tape and water, and the slogs through airport security have become a routine irritation, not a grim foreboding.

While the threat of a terror attack has not disappeared, the combined military, intelligence, diplomatic and financial efforts to hobble al-Qaida and its affiliates have escalated over the past four years and have paid off. Top terror leaders, including Osama bin Laden, are dead and their networks in Pakistan, Yemen and Somalia disrupted.

The Philippines managed only a 2-2 draw against Vietnam early Saturday as it mathematically kept its quest to finish within the top 10 of the 40th Istanbul Chess Olympiad.

All four boards were drawn against the Philippines’ nemesis in Southeast Asia as the Filipinos picked up one match point for a total of 14 match points in this 11-round Swiss System event that finishes on Sunday.

Under this scoring system, a team victory is worth two points, a draw one and a loss zero. The Philippine team has six wins, two draws and two losses.

Wesley So drew with Le Quang Liem in 38 movies of a King’s Indian, Nguyen Ngoc Truongson forced a draw by perpetual check on Oliver Barbosa in a 30-move Slav Defense, Eugene Torre and Nguyen Van Huy halved the point in a 54-move Queen’s Gambit and Mark Paragua drew with Nguyen Doc Hoa in 46 moves of a King’s Indian.

The Philippines are tied from ninth to 14th places and will play Romania in the last round set on Sunday afternoon, Manila time.

The Romanians, seeded 25th, are coming off a 3-1 victory over powerhouse France are also bidding to finish in the top 10, which they have not done in a long time.

The Philippine team’s preparation is expected to focus on stopping Romanian second board Mircea-Emilian Parligas, who is unbeaten with a 7.5/9 score and Levente Vajda at fourth board with 6.5/9.

Torre, Barbosa score; Team PH 2nd
Manila Bulletin â€" Thu, Sep 6, 2012 7:25 PM PHT

Eugene Torre and Oliver Barbosa, two grandmasters separated by nearly three generations, delivered the killer blows in the Philippines' amazing 3-1 victory over powerhouse England Tuesday in the eighth round of the 2012 World Chess Olympiad in Istanbul, Turkey.

Torre, the 60-year-old chess legend, defeated old rival GM Nigel Short (2698) with the black pieces at board three while Barbosa, 26, continued his winning run with white, this time at the expense of GM Jones Gawain (2653).

GMs Wesley So and Mark Paragua, playing on opposite ends of the four-board match, hacked out draws with GM Michael Adams (2722) and GM Nicholas Pert (2555), respectively.

The Filipinos came into the tournament, hoping to improve on their worst showing - 50th place - two years ago in Russia.

With three rounds left, the Filipinos can do the impossible - win this tournament - beginning with a much-anticipated showdown with China Wednesday.

Mulcting cops made general’s son cry
By Julie Aurelio, Marlon Ramos
Philippine Daily Inquirer
10:49 pm | Thursday, September 6th, 2012

Just like any protective father, Chief Superintendent Leonardo Espina had consistently reminded his children to avoid using their mobile phone while driving, obey traffic rules and watch out for criminals on the road.

But he apparently forgot to also warn them against crooks within the police force itself.

A visibly irked Espina, who was designated on Wednesday as the new director of the National Capital Police Region Office (NCRPO), Thursday recounted his son’s traumatic experience Tuesday night at the hands of two cops who allegedly tried to extort P20,000 from him for supposedly engaging in “phone sex” while behind the wheel.

The two policemenâ€"Senior Police Officer 4 Jose de la Peña and Police Officer 3 Resty del Rosario of the Quezon City Police District’s Mobile Patrol Unitâ€"are facing criminal and administrative charges.

De la Peña has yet to report for duty since the incident, while Del Rosario surfaced Thursday afternoon claiming it was only De la Peña who dealt with the younger Espina.

“As a father, of course I was very angry initially because my son was victimized by fellow policemen,” Espina told reporters at Camp Crame. “Despite this, I call on the public to still put their trust in us. We will do everything to go after these (kinds of policemen). We don’t want them to stay in the Philippine National Police.”

“(But) what angers me more is that it could have happened to anybody. That really infuriates me. It just so happened that this time, my son was the victim,” he said.

Espina, who headed the PNP Highway Patrol Group prior to his new post, said he had ordered QCPD director Chief Supt. Mario de la Vega to file the appropriate charges against De la Peña and Del Rosario.

According to Espina, his 22-year-old son parked his car near a school along Hemady Street in Barangay Mariana, Quezon City, at around 9 p.m. Tuesday to call a classmate whom he was supposed to meet at the nearby Greenhills Shopping Center in San Juan.

Moments later, he said, the two policemen in a patrol car approached his son and accosted him for supposedly engaging in phone sex. De la Peña even warned him that what he was doing was a serious offense.

“Since it’s the first time he faced such a situation, my son did not know what to do. The policeman then asked P20,000 from him purportedly to avoid further embarrassment because the incident may come out in the media,” Espina said.

“When my son told De la Peña that he did not have that amount, the policeman lowered it to P10,000. De la Peña eventually asked for P5,000.”

Espina said De la Peña then ordered his son to move to the front passenger seat as the policeman took the wheel and drove the car to an automated teller machine (ATM) near Camp Crame.

He said his son had the chance to call him when he got off the car to withdraw money from the ATM.

“My son’s voice was cracking. I got really worried because he was already crying when he told me what just happened to him. So I immediately told him to get the policeman who accosted him on the phone,” he said.

During their brief conversation, Espina said De la Peña identified himself as “Policeman Joseph.”

“He asked me who I was. So I told him, ‘This is General Espina.’ But he suddenly hung up. My son said De la Peña immediately left him after I spoke on the phone.”

According to De la Vega, PO3 Del Rosario, who surfaced on Thursday afternoon, claimed that it was only De la Peña who dealt with the younger Espina.

“He said he was only following orders from De la Peña and that he remained in the patrol car while De la Peña boarded the complainant’s car,” De la Vega said.

Recruiting and career expert Abby Kohut of AbsolutelyAbby.com says that inappropriate email addresses like “clubhopper@example.com” or “hotchick@example.com” can send a resume to the bottom of the pile, if not the trash. “It’s not so much the email address as it is [the job seeker’s] judgment that I’m concerned about,” she says.

And the same goes for Twitter: More and more recruiters are researching candidates on social sites, so make sure you have a professional-sounding Twitter handle as well.

Hmm, mao diay wa ko madawat isip part taym titser sa atoa tungod sa akong email address nga hubagbohol... :P

patuga-tuga ug pa-anti-RH bill, dili man diay kamao mo-defend ug argue using his own logic and brain (if he has any). mas maayo pa si lito lapid naghilom-hilom lang kay kahibalo siya nga bulok siyang dako. mao unta ni buhaton ni sotto, kabalo ni si sotto nga bugo siyang dako ug modawat lang siya ug P200 Million nga Pork Barrel every year isip senador nga walay hinungdan pareha sa mga tawo nga nibutar niya, tak-om nalang unta iyang baba.

i am not an anti- or pro-RH bill, by the way. makalagot lang ning mga opisyal nga magpatuo-tuo nga naay grado ug nahibaw-an sa kinabuhi.

Nagpakauwaw lang ning tawhana. Gimantsahan niya ang dungog sa iyang apohan and namesake, the original Vicente Sotto, Father of Cebuano Letters, senator and main author of the Press Freedom Law, of whom our own Carlos P. Garcia said:  "Vicente Sotto was a rock of Gibraltar in character because of the ruggedness of his conviction, the indomitability of his soul, the sublimity of his courage, and the depth of his faith in the ultimate triumph of justice. His knees did no bending, his pen signed no retraction, his march saw no retreat, and his soul of steel knew no surrender. He marshaled his efforts and used his influence to secure and safeguard for the press the fullest measure of freedom. By his death the country has lost a great patriot, his family has lost a loving and devote father, the Senate has lost an illustrious member..."
