The Philippines dropped into a share of eighth spot after absorbing a 0.5-3.5 loss to China in the ninth round of the 40th World Chess Olympiad being held at the Wow Convention Center in Istanbul, Turkey.

Grandmaster (GM) Wesley So (2652) halved the point with GM Wang Hao (2726) after 64 moves of King’s Indian defense but GMs Oliver Barbosa, Eugene Torre and Mark Paragua succumbed in their matches against respective highly rated rivals.

Barbosa (2554) lost to GM Ding Liren (2695), Torre (2469) bowed to GM Bu Xiangzhi (2670) and Paragua (2508) was defeated by GM Li Chao (2665).

The Philippines joined Czech Republic, Azerbaijan, Hungary, Germany, Denmark, Belarus, Poland and Vietnam in a group of 13-pointers.
