Greetings, my esteemed friend.

He leaves us with a seemingly simple but infinitely important reminder, wrapped in a hope for better design writing and education:

So few people seem to realize that everything’s designed. And until we get some good people telling the story, that’s probably going to continue to be the case. So I’d love it if there was a consciousness in the public mind that mathematics and reading and writing is not enough â€" you also need to learn how to do design. Because everything is designed, and the way our world exists around us depends on how well it’s designed. -- http://www.brainpickings.org/
#36110
Ultimately, and perhaps precisely because it requires this kind of abstract knowledge and combinatorial creativity, Moggridge frames design as a form of intelligence:

I really don’t think you’re going to understand design and art until you understand intelligence [and how the brain works]. So you can dent it, you can sort of make things so there are interesting insights and will help people, and you can explain process, but you can’t really, truly expect to explain design unless you explain intelligence.
#36111
Moggridge draws a fascinating parallel between design and science, echoing the idea that intuition is essential to both scientific discovery and creativity:

Every scientist is an intuitive person, and most ‘ahas’ come from intuition anyway. And we all know that we fall in love with things and that we’re interested in subjective qualitative values. It’s just whether you recognize it as having something that you can use in a respective environment or a respectable sense.

USA and Canada / Obama a ‘tough leader’

In DNC speech, Kaine praises Obama as a ‘tough leader’
By Ben Pershing
Posted at 07:39 PM ET, 09/04/2012
http://www.washingtonpost.com/

Timothy M. Kaine told the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte Tuesday that November’s election presents a “real choice” between differing visions of governance, and portrayed Virginia as a case study in how Democrats can succeed.

Kaine, the former Democratic National Committee chairman, addressed the convention in a new guise â€" as the party nominee in Virginia’s marquee Senate race, where he faces fellow former governor George Allen (R) for the right to succeed retiring Sen. James Webb (D).

Kaine noted that Virginia has become a genuine battleground state, as President Obama was the first Democrat to win the commonwealth in more than 40 years. Both parties view the state as vital to determining who will hold the White House come January.

“How did Virginia go from red to purple?” Kaine asked. “We did it with grassroots excitement and hard work. And we showed Virginians that Democrats get results.”

Allen, who skipped the GOP convention in Tampa last week, has sought to use Kaine’s DNC service as a way to tar the Democrat as excessively partisan and wedded to Obama’s more controversial initiatives.

But as has been the race throughout the Senate contest, Kaine â€" who spoke just before Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx, and well before the major networks picked up coverage â€" did not shy away from Obama or his policies Tuesday, praising him for putting ”results ahead of ideology.”

“He said he’d end the war in Iraq and he has,” Kaine said. “He said he’d draw down troops in Afghanistan and today every Virginia National Guard unit is home for the first time in a decade and we’re so happy. He said he’d go after Al Qaeda and take out bin Laden. And with our great SEAL team, that’s exactly what he did. He said he’d try something that Teddy Roosevelt first talked about â€" reforming [our] health care system â€" and he did.”

Obama, Kaine said, “is a tough leader who gets results for the American public.”

And while he worked across the aisle as governor to get things done, Kaine contended, Republicans have for the last four years “pushed ideology and wedge issues. Just last week, they passed a platform demanding privacy for super PACs and denying privacy to women making health care decisions.”

Even before Kaine spoke, Republicans made clear how they would frame his speech in the larger campaign narrative.

“Tim Kaine is right at home with Democrat party loyalists praising him for championing President Obama’s failed tax, borrow and spend agenda while leaving Virginians behind,” said Allen spokeswoman Emily Davis. “As Governor, Tim Kaine chose to chair the Democratic National Committee instead of focusing his sole attention on Virginians struggling to find jobs, afford college and make ends meet.”

The National Republican Senatorial Committee also weighed in, dubbing Kaine “the number one cheerleader” for Obama’s policies.

William Grant "Bill" Moggridge RDI (June 25, 1943 â€" September 8, 2012) was a British-born designer, author, and educator who cofounded the design company IDEO and was director of the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum in New York. He was a pioneer in adopting a human-centered approach in design, and championed interaction design as a mainstream design discipline (he is given credit for coining the term). Among his achievements, he designed the first laptop computer, the GRiD Compass, was honored for Lifetime Achievement from the National Design Awards[5], and given the Prince Philip Designers Prize. --Wiki

Early laptop designer Bill Moggridge dies at 69; computer used by military, NASA in 1980s
By Associated Press, Published: September 9

NEW YORK â€" Bill Moggridge, a British industrial designer who designed an early portable computer with the flip-open shape that is common today, has died. He was 69.

The Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum said Moggridge, its director since 2010, died on Saturday from cancer.

Moggridge is credited with the design of the Grid Compass, a computer that had a keyboard and yellow-on-black display that sold for $8,150 when it was released in 1982. It was encased in magnesium and seen as rugged, and was used by the U.S. military.

The computer made its way into outer space aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery in 1985.

Although there were many portable computers being developed around that time, Grid Systems Corp. won the patent for the clamshell design with the foldable screen hinged toward the back of the machine, said Alex Bochannek, a curator at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, Calif.

Moggridge pushed for this foldable design when it was realized the flat-panel screen, keyboard and circuitry could all fit snugly together.

“In terms of the industrial design of the enclosure, Moggridge was instrumental in proposing that,” Bochannek said. “He came up with that particular form factor.”

Until that point, portable computers resembled portable sewing machines that weighed more than 20 pounds and had a big handle, he said.

It was after using the machine that Moggridge’s ideas about design began to change, Bochannek said. His work began to focus more on how people interacted with devices, rather than just making sure they were enclosed well.

The "Prayer Position" Test and the Pinky Tests

What it tests for: Rheumatoid arthritis

How to do it: Hold your hands in the position for traditional prayer, with the fingers and palms flat and touching. See if your pinky finger stands straight, as it's supposed to.

What it means: If you aren't able to place your hands flat against each other, it suggests that either your wrists don't bend flexibly or your fingers and knuckles aren't straight. This is a possible indicator of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), which makes joints swell and stiffen and fingers become gnarled or bent. The inability to extend the little finger is another indicator of RA, because the little finger tends to be the first thing to lose function.

What to do if you fail: If you suspect you're developing rheumatoid arthritis, which is an autoimmune disease, schedule a visit with your doctor. Before you go, survey your family to determine if there's a family history of RA, which often has a genetic basis.

Happy testing!

The Nose Test and the Heel Test

What it tests for: Neurodegenerative disease

How to do it: Hold your arm out, finger extended. Close your eyes and try to touch your nose with your finger. Then do it again with the other hand. You should be able to do this smoothly and accurately. Next, lie down and run the heel of one foot up and down the shin of the opposite extended leg.

What it means: These are two components of basic neurological testing, which evaluates coordination and fine motor movement indicative of the health of the cerebellum, the part of the brain that governs motor movement, coordination, balance, and muscle tone. Failure to do the nose and heel tests accurately can be one sign of a neurodegenerative disease such as multiple sclerosis or a brain tumor or lesion.

What to do if you fail: Try these tests several times before you conclude something's wrong, as many factors -- such as having had a glass of wine -- can affect it. If you regularly fail to get your finger anywhere near your nose, alert your doctor.
#36127
Finger Measurement Test

What it tests for: Osteoarthritis, and other things. . . .

How to do it: Hold your hands flat and look closely at the lengths of your fingers in relation to each other. Is your index finger shorter than your ring finger?

What it means: A recent study at the University of Nottingham in England found that if a woman's index finger is shorter than her ring finger, she's more than twice as likely as others to develop osteoarthritis of the knee or hip. There's no scientific explanation yet for the connection between finger size and arthritis risk.

Several other studies have found another use for finger measurement: It can be used to guess at penis size. According to studies done in South Korea, if a man's ring finger is significantly longer than his index finger, he's likely to be well endowed, while a short ring finger indicates average to below-average size. Previous studies have shown that a long index finger is an indication of lower testosterone exposure in the womb.

What to do if you fail: Women: In this case, there's no immediate action to take. Just be on the alert for signs of osteoarthritis such as knee, hip, shoulder, or back pain. If you do develop pain and suspect osteoarthritis, you might mention the finger length research to your doctor. Guys: If you notice her looking at your ring finger, distract her by buying her a drink.

Romberg's Test

What it tests for: Degenerative diseases (or intoxication)

How to do it: Stand with your feet exactly together, arms by your sides. Now close your eyes and stay that way for a full minute. How do you feel: perfectly balanced, or as if you're swaying or falling forward? It's best to do this test with someone watching you to detect swaying. A variation of this test is to do it standing heel to toe on a straight line.

What it means: This test measures proprioception or positioning, considered the "sixth sense" that tells us where our bodies are in space. Proprioception requires accurate sensory input from our joints and muscles and healthy functioning of the dorsal columns of the spinal cord, which allow us to perceive the position of our limbs both in relation to other parts of our bodies and to the environment. When you can't balance with your eyes closed, it's considered a sign of sensory ataxia, or loss of motor coordination, which can be a sign of diabetic neuropathy, multiple sclerosis, inner ear problems, lumbar spinal stenosis, or another degenerative disease. Romberg's test is also sometimes used as a test of intoxication or drug use.

What to do if you fail: It is possible to fail this test when nothing is wrong with you, but -- because it can also indicate a serious condition -- it's worth discussing with your doctor. If you're also experiencing other symptoms, such as numbness, tingling in your arms or legs, or balance problems, ask your doctor for a referral to a neurologist.

The Diamond Test or "Schamroth's Sign"

What it tests for: Cardiovascular, lung, or other diseases

How to do it: Hold up (or down) both index fingers and turn them so the nails are facing each other. Press the nails together and you should be able to see a tiny, narrow, diamond-shaped space between your nails where the nails come flat together but the nail beds don't touch each other.

What it means: If your nails are rounded over and can't press flat together, it's a sign of "clubbing," a thickening of the fingertips that occurs when not enough oxygen is circulating in the bloodstream. Clubbing can be a sign of cardiovascular disease, such as coronary artery disease or heart failure, or of lung disease, like COPD, lung infection, or lung cancer. In some cases, inflammatory bowel disease and cirrhosis of the liver also cause clubbing.

What to do if you fail: Look closely at your fingers for other signs of clubbing. Measure the thickness of your fingertips all the way around; if they're clubbing, you'll notice that they're noticeably thicker above the top knuckle than below it. Clubbing is important to bring to your doctor's attention to monitor your heart and lung health.

Have you ever wondered why your doctor asks you to do odd things like touch your nose during an office visit, then scribbles notes in your chart? It's because there are many physical tests that can tell whether your body is functioning as it should. While we tend to leave it to doctors and medical tests to figure out if something's wrong, we can actually use many of these checks ourselves to determine whether all systems are go. Here, five odd medical tests you can do at home.

In his first speech, delivered Aug. 13 to show his opposition to the reproductive health bill, Sotto lifted from two American bloggers, one of whom accused him of twisting her words to suit his anti-RH bill arguments. In his second speech on Sept. 5, Sotto translated a speech delivered by the American senator Robert F. Kennedy, again to further the anti-RH cause.

How he and his writers thought they could get away with it is what stuns, shocks and saddens Filipinos.  In this day and age of high speed Internet, it is so easy to paste a paragraph on the Google search bar to check for plagiarism and get back confirmation within seconds.

Yet Sotto and his writers did it, not once but twice, to borrow the words of actress Susan Roces.  Sotto took a beating from social media the first time, and yet repeated the misdeed a second time, which only shows how he and his staff saw nothing wrong with stealing other people's words and claiming them as his own.

Plagiarism is intellectual dishonesty, students are repeatedly told, yet Sotto and his writers apparently never learned the lesson or were absent from class when it was being taught.

One man's timely photograph of a couple kissing just as they are being handcuffed by the police could end up being the basis for a film.

That's the good news for amateur photographer Mo Gelber, 42.

The bad news is that Gelber's "Last Kiss" snapshot will be eligible to win this year's "Project Imaginat10n" contest sponsored by filmmaker Ron Howard only if Gelber can obtain written permission from the couple.

Gelber is a finalist in the contest. Each year, the top 10 submissions are turned into short films.

It's already been quite a journey for Gelber, who first had to track down the couple, whom he photographed as they were being arrested in August in front of Manhattan Criminal Court on graffiti charges.

"I am completely ecstatic. To get this recognition means a lot to me," Gelber told the New York Daily News.

The problem is the unnamed man in the picture is still in jail and his forlorn girlfriend Alexis Creque, 28, won't cooperate with Gelber until her boyfriend is released from jail.

"We knew that we were going to be split up once we got to Central Booking," Creque said of why she and the man kissed as they were being arrested. "I was just the look-out," she said. "We had a crazy romance all summer. It is like a movie."

In fact, the couple bear a striking resemblance to the characters portrayed in "True Romance," starring Christian Slater and Patricia Arquette. Somewhat mirroring reality, the film's couple fall in love while in the midst of a major crime spree.

As for Gelber, he says he's willing to do anything within his power to keep his chances alive.

"I will bring the release form to Rikers if I have to," he told the paper. "I just really want to win this contest."

China's Richest Man Could Teach Us A Thing Or Two About Being Frugal
By Jill Krasny | Business Insider â€" Fri, Sep 7, 2012

Zong Qinghou may be China's richest man and rank No. 23 globally, but he could easily earn the distinction for being most frugal.

According to Bloomberg News, Zong, the 66-year-old founder of Wahaha soft drinks, only spends $20 a day, though he's worth a cool $21.6 billion. As the BBC's Nick Rosen discovered last Summer, Zong's "monk-like devotion to duty is legendary," with one Wahaha employee recalling he "reviewed every office expense, including the purchase of a broom."

Zong's trajectory from school shopkeep to beverage mogul spans more than two decades, so it's commendable that he hasn't let his wealth go to his head. In this way, he's a lot like wealthy peers who earn $100,000 or more and told PNC Financial Services that the recession has had little to no effect on their retirement planning goals. In fact, they're looking forward to punching out.

Beyond being disciplined savers like Zong, a lot of the PNC survey respondents (46%) said they've worked hard to reduce their debt, turn around their spending habits (33%) and pay off their mortgage (23%). What's more, these respondents planned to work well into their golden years, with three-quarters saying they'll "work in some fashion after retirement."

While you don't have to count every penny like Zong, it's important to take note of the habits that got the baby boomer ahead. He worked hard, followed his passion, and lived incredibly below his means. He still does. Put simply, he thinks like rich people, which in turn has brought him great wealth.

Here are 10 tips that can help you better shop at a thrift store:

1.Show up on stocking days: Many thrift stores have a particular day of the week that they put out new merchandise. Find out what that day is, and show up then to get first pick of the latest deals.

2.Search for quality: This is especially true with clothing. You might be surprised at the name brand, high quality items some people are happy to part with. Keep your eyes open for items you know are of good quality.

3.Make a list: You want to be prepared with a list. Even though impulse buying at the thrift store is probably not as bad as when you are paying full price on an impulse purchase, those little surprises can add up. Be sure that you know what you want, and make a plan for what to buy.

4.Return until you find what you want: Don’t assume that the thrift store is a bust if you don’t find what you are looking for on your first excursion. Check back over time, looking for what you want. Changes are that, eventually, you will find what you are looking for.

5.Watch for sales: Even thrift stores have sales. Some offer “fill a bag” promotions, “clearance” sales at the end of the season and other sales. This is a great way find even deeper discounts on thrift store merchandise. And, while thrift store shopping works well without coupons, you can also look for thrift store coupons for bigger savings.

6.Shop during the week: Weekend shoppers are out in force from Friday evening until Sunday evening. Avoid the crowds (and avoid competition for the best finds) by visiting the thrift store during the week.

7.Ask about store credit: Some thrift stores only accept donations, but others also accept consignment items and will give you store credit for what you bring in. Find out about the policies at your local second hand store of choice. If you can get store credit for what you bring in, that can be a great way to save a little more.

8.Be careful about overdoing it: It can be very tempting to go a little crazy at the thrift store, buying several things at once. Stick to your plan, though. If you only need three dress shirts, don’t go nuts and buy 10 or 11. Remember that a frugal lifestyle is about moderation.

9.Plan to take awhile: A trip to the thrift store is likely to take awhile, since you will probably have to dig around a little. Be prepared to take around an hour â€" or more. This means that perhaps you leave the kids at home for a serious trip to the thrift store.

10.Don’t forget to donate!: Finally, you want the thrift store to keep going. If if you don’t get store credit, you should still donate some of your unneeded items as well. Keep the cycle going, and provide great deals for others, just as they are providing them for you.

Tips for Shopping at a Thrift Store
http://couponshoebox.com/

One of the best ways to live a frugal lifestyle is to make shopping at a thrift store part of your regular shopping regimen. Thrift stores feature items that have been used before. This can include anything from dishes to clothing to books to furniture to toys. These used items are often in reasonably good condition, and can be found at very low prices. Shopping at a thrift store can be a great way to save money, while acquiring items that you need.

Do not stand at my grave and weep
by Mary Elizabeth Frye (1932)

Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sun on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning’s hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circling flight.
I am the soft star-shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there; I did not die.

Teaching Children About Bible Miracles â€" Balaam’s Donkey Speaks
Posted on May 10, 2012 by Liz Hagler
http://hookedonthebook.com/

Teaching children about the Bible miracles is important because it helps them to see how nothing is impossible for God.  If God can do miracles in the Bible, He can do them in our children’s lives today.  Here is an easy way to do that interactively.

Today let’s focus on a Bible miracle from the book of Numbers;  Balaam’s Donkey Speaks (Numbers 22:20-35).

God’s People (the Israelites) were camping in the plains of Moab.  Balak the King of Moab was afraid of the Israelites because of how they had destroyed the Amorites.

He sends messengers to the prophet Balaam offering great rewards to come and curse the Israelites so Moab could defeat them.  Balaam refused because he knew the Israelites were God’s people.

Balak sent his messengers again offering greater rewards than the first time if Balaam would curse the Israelites.  Finally, Balaam consents to go, but not before God warns Balaam only to speak God’s words.

Ask the children…

What did Balaam’s donkey see standing in the road that Balaam was prevented from seeing and what did the donkey do?

“Balaam’s donkey saw the angel of the LORD standing in the road with a drawn sword in his hand. The donkey bolted off the road into a field, but Balaam beat it and turned it back onto the road.” (Numbers 22:23)

Three times the donkey tries to keep Balaam from moving forward and being killed by the angel, finally what does the donkey do?

“Then the LORD gave the donkey the ability to speak. ‘What have I done to you that deserves your beating me three times?’  it asked Balaam.” (Numbers 22:28)

What further miracle did the Lord do for Balaam and how did Balaam respond?

“Then the LORD opened Balaam’s eyes, and he saw the angel of the LORD standing in the roadway with a drawn sword in his hand. Balaam bowed his head and fell face down on the ground before him.” (Number 22:31)

Finally, what additional miracle did the Lord do to convince Balaam to only speak the words God wanted him to say?

“But the angel of the LORD told Balaam, ‘Go with these men, but say only what I tell you to say.’ So Balaam went on with Balak’s officials.” (Numbers 22:35)

So God spoke to Balaam through the donkey and the angel.  Isn’t it wonderful the lengths God will go to communicate with us?

Now you can see how Bible miracles are God’s way of blessing the world.  Glory to Him!!!

Lesson:

Zacchaeus probably became rich by cheating people, something tax collectors were known for in those days. But Zacchaeus met Jesus, and he became a new man. He had faith in Jesus' power and love.

Zacchaeus promised to pay back - even more than he had taken - those he had cheated. But the crowd didn't like this. They needed new hearts too, but they didn't realize it.

Real faith is not a matter of simply believing in and loving Jesus. It involves turning from old ways that go against God's commands and starting a new life. Real faith acts to make things right again.

Zacchaeus the Tax Collector

Luke 19

Zacchaeus was a tax collector who got rich by making others pay lots of taxes. When Zacchaeus heard Jesus was in town, he wanted to see Him. But Zacchaeus was short, and Jesus was always surrounded by a crowd. So Zacchaeus decided to run ahead of the crowd and climb a sycamore tree. From there he could watch for Jesus. He watched as Jesus drew closer. He held his breath when Jesus stopped right beneath his tree. Then Jesus looked straight up at him!

"Zacchaeus," said Jesus with a smile, "come on down. I want to stay at your house today!"

Zacchaeus hopped down. "You are welcome at my house, Jesus," said the little man with a big smile.

But others grumbled, muttering to each other. "Why does Jesus want to go home with a sinner?"

Zacchaeus turned to Jesus and said, "Look, Lord. Here and now, I promise to give half of my money to the poor. If I have cheated anyone in taxes, I will pay them back four times that amount."

"Salvation comes to Zacchaeus's house today!" announced Jesus. "For I have come to look for and to sale those who are lost."

(Reuters) - A Pakistani military helicopter plucked a young Christian girl accused of blasphemy from a prison yard on Saturday and flew her to a secret location after she was granted bail.

Live broadcasts showed heavily-armed police surrounding Rimsha Masih, believed to be no older than 14, covering her face with a green scarf as she walked to the helicopter.

A judge granted Masih bail on Friday and her lawyers are applying to have charges that she burned pages from the Koran dismissed after a local cleric was detained on suspicion of planting false evidence to stir resentment against Christians.

Even before that arrest, Masih's case provoked international concern as she could face execution under Pakistan's blasphemy law despite her young age and reported mental problems.

The dramatic nature of Masih's release underlined the fear for her life.
The lawyer prosecuting her suggested she could be lynched if found not guilty. Blasphemy charges are frequently followed by deadly riots against minority communities.

Despite international condemnation, the blasphemy law still enjoys widespread support among ordinary Pakistanis.

Two high-ranking government officials who had suggested its reform were shot dead, one by his own bodyguard. Lawyers threw rose petals at that killer and the judge who convicted him was forced to flee the country.

The number of cases brought under the law is rising rapidly and rights groups fear it is mostly being used to settle personal vendettas.

Since 1987, there have been almost 250 blasphemy cases, according to Pakistani thinktank the Center for Research and Security Studies.

It said 52 people had been killed after being accused of blasphemy since 1990.

Shamri told Al-Hayat (per Al-Monitor):

I received a call from a Presidential Office official, who told me: ‘We used to hold a grudge against you. However, we found out that although your words are cruel, they speak the truth. I cannot deliver your articles to the President. I will give you his private and confidential e-mail and you send him your articles in your own way’.
Originally, Shamri planned to use the emails to petition the president for reform, but when the crackdowns worsened and his emails stayed unanswered, he decided to hack the president's account instead.

Now the Guardian claims it has 3,000 of Assad's emails, and Shamri says he has "7,500 Emails", many unseen, that "blow the lid off the President's secrets."

In the leak to the Guardian, the hackers claimed their motive was to "show the world what this regime is like.

In January of 2012, Anonymous broke into the mail server of the Syrian Ministry of Presidential Affairs and gave whistleblowing-site Wikileaks 2.4 million formerly regime-eyes-only emails. By Feb. 7, the owner of the sam@alshahba.com address was known, and Assad began receiving threatening emails. He closed the presidential account the same day, according to Information Week.

Ironically, Assad did appear to have knowledge of security procedure, at least in the way he treated his email account. he deleted his mail after reading and never attached his name or initials to any email he sent from sam@alshahba.com. But in other ways, he and his wife were woefully out of touch.

After the missives leaked to the Guardian, blog Foreign Policy reported that "Asma is apparently an Internet shopaholic, buying enough luxury items to stock a Tom Wolfe novel: Necklaces of amethyst, diamond, and onyx; a Ming Luce vase; and roughly $15,000 worth of candlesticks, tables, and chandeliers" -- all while the country was falling apart around her.

Assad, meanwhile, "made light of reforms he had promised in an attempt to defuse the crisis, referring to 'rubbish laws of parties, elections, media'" and at one point forwarded to an aide "a link to YouTube footage of a crude re-enactment of the siege of Homs using toys and biscuits," the Guardian reports.

At the beginning of the Syrian crackdowns, Shamri was running the Internet's first Arab-language information network, and he also moonlighted as an opposition blogger.
#36194
But 1234 isn't just a bad password; it is, as the Times of Israel notes, widely acknowledged to be one of the most imbecilic password possible, thanks to the famous scene in "Spaceballs".

Shamri and his group didn't release the emails immediately upon cracking the code, however. For eight months, they used this exclusive access to read the private emails of Assad and his wife Asma, looking for a "devastating revelation" that would help "oust" the regime, the Guardian reports.

They did not find it, but they did, however, find valuable information, including some they later used to protect opposition leaders and Western journalists in Homs.

But as Shamri and his confederates waited to move and the civil war in Syria escalated, another tribe of hacktivists turned interested in the regime: the hacker group Anonymous.
#36195
The Times Of Israel reports:

After a week of attempting to decipher what they thought would be an enigmatic code protecting Assad’s private correspondences, one of the sophisticated cyber-burglars tried 'thinking like an idiot,' Al-Hayat reported Thursday.

'You’re doing it wrong,' said hacker Abdullah Shamri, recalling for the paper the moment at which epiphany struck one of his criminals-in-arms. 'You always call the heads of the regime morons, so let’s try to work like morons'.

An enterprising hacker immediately tried a password widely acknowledged to be one of the most imbecilic possible: 1234…Within moments the hackers had at their fingertips a trove of private missives belonging to the dictator of Damascus.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's private email address was sam@alshahba.com. His password was 1234.

This absurd factoid about the now-floundering president came to light on Thursday, in an interview with opposition hacker Abdullah al-Shamri gave to the Arabic language newspaper Al-Hayat.

In February, under the aegis of an opposition group, Shamri's confederates released 3,000 of Assad's private emails to the Guardian. But until Al-Hayat published Shamri's interview on Thursday, the world knew little of the hackers themselves, or of the absurd tale that was their break-in.
