The Art of the Kris
« on: September 10, 2012, 10:23:22 AM »
The kris or keris is an asymmetrical dagger most strongly associated with the culture of Indonesia, but also indigenous to Malaysia, Thailand and Brunei. It is known as kalis in the southern Philippines. The kris is famous for its distinctive wavy blade, but in the past, most had straight blades.

A kris can be divided into three parts: bilah (blade), hulu (hilt), and warangka (sheath). These parts of the kris are objects of art, often carved in meticulous detail and made from various materials; metal, precious or rare types of wood, or gold or ivory. A kris's aesthetic value covers the dhapur (the form and design of the blade, with around 150 variants), the pamor (the pattern of metal alloy decoration on the blade, with around 60 variants), and tangguh referring to the age and origin of a kris.

Both a weapon and spiritual object, kris are often considered to have an essence or presence, considered to possess magical powers, with some blades possessing good luck and others possessing bad.Kris are used for display, as talismans with magical powers, weapons, a sanctified heirloom (pusaka), auxiliary equipment for court soldiers, an accessory for ceremonial dress, an indicator of social status, a symbol of heroism, etc.

The different types of kris used in the different parts of the Southern Philippines.
Quite popular in Muslim Mindanao, and were used to decapitate the heads of enemies.

Junggayan Kalis
Blade has a 7 wave blade 20 3/4 long showing twisted laminations on the center and bounded by twisted wire of gold & silver. The asang-asang (metal band on the guard) is made of swasa. The grip area of the handle has a traditional cord wrap lacquered black (recent replacement) and a swasa ferrule with dark patina. Ivory Kakatua pommel has a honey color. Dark hardwood scabbard with silver panels on the top section showing some floral designs. The lower part of the scabbard has 3 silver bands with similar designs as the upper panels. Kampilan Ni Lapu Lapu

A kampilan, used by many of the Muslim Rajahs of the Philippines. It is believed that Rajah Lapu Lapu used a kampilan when he decapitated Ferdinand Magellan's head during a battle in 1521.

When I was in Southern Leyte in 2010, as I was walking around the coastline of Panaon Island, Southern Leyte, I noticed that the men who work in the fields use the Panabas to cut through weeds. Weeds as tall as 3-4 feet  can be cut down by the Panabas. I remember walking to one man who was wielding it and asked if i could hold it.

I swung it -- it has a very precise and clean cut. Then I asked the man, "Nong, puydi ba ni maka patay sa tawo?"

Ingon ang tawo nako, "Dong, pwede ni mo hiwa sa lawas sa karabao, kana pa sa tawo..."

 ;)

During my birthday, I used a Keris that I had bought from the market to dispatch the two pigs that i had bought.
I asked the butcher if he could use the Keris to kill the two pigs, which he did. Dali ra kaayo mo cut ang keris sa lawas.
The way the keris is designed, it can easily pierce through the rib cage , can also cut through the aorta and the great vessels, rendering the animal dead within seconds.

It has a very clean cut as well. The butcher killed the 1st pig, and I asked to kill the 2nd one. It was quite quick. Gutting the animal via the Keris was quick; from the Manubrial arch to the ventral abdominals, i made a midsagittal cut.

After that, gi limpyo ang tina-e , og gi kuha ang dugo. Gi luto dayon. :)

The Golok is a south east asian variant of the machete, it is of Indonesian origin, tho it is also widely used in the southern philippines. Indonesians call it the "Golok", in the Philippines, however, it is referred ot as the "Gulok".

One interesting aspect of the Keris is the handle, which comes in different colors, forms, and even sizes. Let's take a look at some different handles.

The handle is referred to , in Maguindanaonon dialect, as "Ulu Ulu".

the ulu ulu of this particular keris is a carving of a naga, a mythical snake in old malay mythology.

The Keris' Gangya

The gangya serves as the guard of the kris. When a soldier wielding the kris would fight another soldier, it was the gangya of the blade that protected the wielder's hand from the opponent's blade. The design of the gangya was rather rugged , but served a purpose in absorbing the opponent's blows.

painless?  no wailing of the pigs then?  that's reassuring.
