Jokes and Humor / It Hurts Here
August 30, 2009, 04:46:12 AM
A man goes to the doctor and says to the doctor:

"It hurts when I press here" (pressing his side)
"And when I press here" (pressing the other side)
"And here" (his leg)
"And here, here and here" (his other leg, and both arms)

So the doctor examined him all over and finally discovered what was wrong...

"You've got a broken finger!"

On a side note tho, my father is completely and utterly in love with my mom.

We had a father-to-son conversation before.

And my father once told me that my mom is the perfect mother. The perfect wife. Very forgiving, and hard working for her kids ug pamilya.

Hilak pa si dad. Pero I always tell him, "Daddy, don't argue kalingaw kai pinagga man jud ka ni mommy. You both love each other, sacrificed together, and loved together."

Its good to know that they still argue from time to time, pero happy man sila duha. Natural ra man ug mo away ang bana ug asawa.

#36009
Maka katawa pood ni lagi.
I remember my parents, God Bless their hearts!, would argue about the simplest and littlest things.

Ning joke joke to silang duha one time.
Mommy said to dad, 'Rico, do you love me?'
Katawa si dad, "Saba dinha Lisa. Of course I love you. Taga-an gud ka upat nga anak"

LOL!

Ngek!

Mom and dad are so cute when they argue. Kai quick ra sila mo hilom. Mo make-up pa lol. Man and Wife jud.

My grandfather once opined, to my grandmother Lola Nating, "Nating, ngano mo kalingaw mo ratatat man ka?"

Away-away napood sila duha. lol!

Nakahinumdum ko sa una..

My lola was sickly and ning joke joke sija sa ahong Lolo Ciano. She was spitting phlem at the time, and she said to my lolo, "Ondoy Ciano, gi pinangga ba ko nimo? Ug pinangga ko nimo, inuma ahong  phlem ( i forget the word she used to refer to mucus phlem)."

Then lolo responded immediately, "Saba dinha Nating."

LoL.

Sadly, in marriage, man and woman invariably settle back to their natural state--woman loves to talk, man sometimes prefers the state of silence.

Women love to connect by talking, men are not as inclined to express what they feel inside. It's the way man and woman are constituted psychologically, according to Dr. John Gray.

Understanding our inner differences will enable the man to understand that when a woman says, "I didn't marry to talk to a wall," she really means she needs a hug and a token of appreciation for her long day; and the woman to understand that when a man seems withdrawn and without a word, he is saying "I am here for you, I am just processing some thoughts and even emotions inside which I don't really want you to worry about."

Real conversation between a couple is appreciating the woman's feelings behind her words, and the man's thoughts behind his silence.

I could not help but think about my parents in your accurate synopsis, Mr. Benne.

My father is a very quiet and reticent man. Mom doesn't talk much, but when she does she does so with dad. From my observation tho, though my father does not speak much, he likes it when we all talk, very content sija to have us all back in the house.

I agree, men tend to be more silent, thinking. Observant. Analyzing.

i see where you get your influence, your dad. you look up to him and that explains your style. there's nothing wrong with that, only sometimes girls would get intimidated and may perceive you as boring, uptight, strict, conservative, aloof. Jeans loosens you up a bit, it's more carefree and fun. it takes away the 'boring' aspect attached to formal wear

mao lagi, Mari. My gf back in college got me to wear moccasins lol!  She introduced me to Banana Republic styles. love it.

My friend Korosh and I are crazy tho, lol!

We were studying for our 3rd exam for Pharmacology and we had to memorize over 500 drug names, the indications, adverse effects, dosage, drug interaction, etc.

The day before the exams, we were talking about sex.
hahaha! he and i were in the lounge just talking about girls and sex. then it hit my mind that we did not sleep for almost 5 days.

I commented, "Korosh, it think we have excessive dopaminergic activity in our brain." and we bought laughed for like 30 minutes, yo. crazy. lol! because excessive dopamine does cause psychosis.
O man.

You know what was funny? on the exam the next day, there was a question on dopamine and psychosis. After the exam, all i could remember Korosh shouting out loud, "Haloperidol, Haloperidol!"

And i shouted, "Lithium Salt, Lithium Salt! Rivastigmine"

LOL!

(all of said drugs are curatives for excessive dopaminergic activity--leading to psychosis).

Then we crashed...LOL!
The next day, back to work na pood.
Back to Business.....hehe

This past 3rd semester, was our hardest semester. And I admit that it was the 'test' of my life. We had Medical Immunology, Pharmacology, Medical Microbiolgy and General Pathology and Psychiatric Behavioural Science all in one semester. 8AM till 5 pm. Every single day.

During exam weeks, Mari, this was my schedule with my study mates (Korosh, Job, Thiru):
1. go to class
2. finish class
3. go home, shower, bring pillow
4. stay in libray from 6pm till 3-4 am.
5. nap for 30 minutes or 1 hour, then begin again.

Sometimes, Mari we ony sleep for 1-2 hours a day.
Sometimes we stay awak for 4-5 days straight.

Coffee has been so integral to keeping us awake, lol!

At the end of the day, after taking our exams , we would have a full grown beard. lol!

Thanks be to God we survived the 1st semester of 2nd year!

Since I was 12, Mari, I liked to dress up.

When I was a kid in Tagbilaran, when my dad came back from Saudi Arabia, he would always be well-dressed. So professional. Executive Engineer Look. Dress pants, black shoes (so well polished), dress shirt, black belt, and aramis cologne.

My dad would take me and my sister to the Bohol Quality Mall sa una, and he would take us to the toy stores, and I would remember hearing the 'click' of his dress shoes. He walks so tall, so confident.

For me, if I don't dress well, i don't feel comfortable. I love wearing suits, and sports coats. I like to look professional.

If you are a professor at a private college or a teacher at a private school, then your salary will be higher.

The average salary of a state college will be poor ~ 60k
but if you are  professor at a private institution, the salary is almost double.

Privatized vs State-owned.
#36043
Because teachers work for the government.
Government jobs will always be poor in salary.
Good benefits, but salary-wise, very poor.

Hey, but they love it. It is their passion to teach, and for some, it is  a dream to be a college professor. To teach the mind, and sheppard the youth to wisdom.

Salamat kaayo mari. Ma inspired pood ta--lagi. hehe.

Ning ingoon ahong priest one time, "Lorenzo, you know what is the difference between a priest and a physician?"

I answered him, "Yes, Fr, a doctor saves lives, and a priest ministers."

He humbled me, "No, my son, a priest doctors the soul to God. A physician doctors the body."

I smiled!

Then he added as parting words, "Remember my son, the greatest man that ever lived was not a priest, not a physician, but was a carpenter. Jesus from Bethlehem."

hehehehe!

AMEN!

Now in the spirit of Rizal.

Who, throughout his life, never once cursed Spain or condemned Spain, but was critical of the practices of the established political authorities in the Philippines (namely the peninsulares and the church officials).

I think it is beautiful how history has cleared the name of Rizal.

I cry sometimes knowing that the great Rizal wrote his last written piece, "Mi Ultimo Adios" in Spanish. He didnt' write it in his native Tagalog, but in Spanish, the language of those who were going to execute him.

In the end, he maintained his calm and spirited demeanor. And I cry sometimes knowing that the great Rizal is now even remembered and honored in Spain. The land that exposed him to the European Enlightenment.

That in the end, he is counted by Spaniards as "Hijo de Espana". (Son of Spain).

I believe, if Rizal were alive today, he would have smiled at that.
And the progress the Filipinos have had since the late 19th century. In the world that he lived. The society at the time.

Long Live the name of Jose Potracio Rizal y Alonso!
Forever will he be the Father of the Philippine Republic!
And a Blessing to Spain!

I am impressed you know a lot about the history of Spain.
when the dictatorship Francisco Franco dead in 1975 was when the model that Rizal thought was applied.

As well was the year when Spain left the rest of colonies that still had to join in the future in the EU.

Regards

Thank you Keko.

I grew ever so interested in Spanish History, its struggle with the muslim Moors, its repudiation of paganism, and its establishment as a Christian nation. Spain, definately, is credited in spreading the Christian faith to countless millions around the world.

Through Spain, Christianity was rooted in the Americas.

Through Spain, the birth of a new world occured. There are over 600 million Latin Americans that are a direct result of Spain/Portuguese amalgamation. And the eventual struggle of these peoples for self governance only adds to the beauty and flavor of human integration.

Spain's imperial initiative was an example of 'Globalization' in the 16th century.

My interest is in Classical Imperial Spanish History.
I'm fairly versed in the history of Nuevo Espana because the Philippines was part of Neuvo Espana for a substantial part of our colonial history. In terms of governance and in relations to the Royal Audencia and religious episcopy.

Spain today has alot to learn from its colonies. Because as you seen, Spanish history is not only a benefit for Spaniards. no!

Spanish History is a culture that we all share, we brothers and sisters of the Latin League. Filipinos, Mexicans, Argentinians, Bolivians, Colombians, Venezuelans, Cubanos, Puerto Ricans, Guamanians, etc etc. For we all were once part of the Spanish Empire. It is our history. Ours to learn, ours to tap on, ours to never forget.

God Bless! Viva Filipinas! Viva Espana!

Depends on the person. hehe.

But if you're intelligent and also have a great work ethic. The sky's the limit.

My colleagues who are Ph.D doctoral students want to go into research (medical, immunological, cancer).

And I admire that, absolutley! These are the students that will pave the way into medical advances and discover and find preventatives and cures to diseases.

To them, their research and their studies is work. To them it is an honor to work within the pillars of Academia. :)

I gree with this. Especially here in the United States, Mari, if anyone is looking to rise above his or her current situation, one has to be competitive and sell himself/herself to the employer either through personal interaction (interviews, game of golf etc) and through his/her resume.

We live in a overly competitive society, here in the United States.
#36054
Mari, interesting point. I have friends who graduated as art majors and or music majors that had to work harder in terms of internships, in landing on jobs as museum curators, art gallery curators, or even getting accepted into prestigious art schools in Italy (Florence, for example).

Coming from a background in hard science and history, I do have an appreciation for art, and humanities as these majors teach students to think beyond the border, to think in abstract and artistic lines.

Going to lab, teach students, and distill chemical liquids, is something. But coming back to one's college dorm to sit down and enjoy Bach for a minute or two and converse with art majors and/or poli science majors was quite titillating. A 'break' from the absolutes of Biology.

My younger sister, in my opinion, maintained a duality and healthy atmosphere. She graduated with a degree in Biology (Honors) with specialty in Molecular Cellular Genetics, but was also a double major in Art.

I would love visiting her art gallery, seeing her sketch in coal, or oil paint. The mixing of biology/science and abstract art.

Great mix. imho.

College is the best place to explore one's interests, strengths, and gifts.

Bible Study / Peter Addresses The Crowd
August 29, 2009, 12:13:23 PM
14Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: "Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say. 15These men are not drunk, as you suppose. It's only nine in the morning! 16No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:
17" 'In the last days, God says,
I will pour out my Spirit on all people.
Your sons and daughters will prophesy,
your young men will see visions,
your old men will dream dreams.
18Even on my servants, both men and women,
I will pour out my Spirit in those days,
      and they will prophesy.
19I will show wonders in the heaven above
and signs on the earth below,
blood and fire and billows of smoke.
20The sun will be turned to darkness
      and the moon to blood
before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord.
21And everyone who calls
on the name of the Lord will be saved.'[c]
22"Men of Israel, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs, which God did among you through him, as you yourselves know. 23This man was handed over to you by God's set purpose and foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men,[d] put him to death by nailing him to the cross. 24But God raised him from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him. 25David said about him:
" 'I saw the Lord always before me.
Because he is at my right hand,
      I will not be shaken.
26Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices;
my body also will live in hope,
27because you will not abandon me to the grave,
nor will you let your Holy One see decay.
28You have made known to me the paths of life;
you will fill me with joy in your presence.'[e]

29"Brothers, I can tell you confidently that the patriarch David died and was buried, and his tomb is here to this day. 30But he was a prophet and knew that God had promised him on oath that he would place one of his descendants on his throne. 31Seeing what was ahead, he spoke of the resurrection of the Christ,[f] that he was not abandoned to the grave, nor did his body see decay. 32God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of the fact. 33Exalted to the right hand of God, he has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear. 34For David did not ascend to heaven, and yet he said,
" 'The Lord said to my Lord:
      "Sit at my right hand
35until I make your enemies
a footstool for your feet." '[g]

36"Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ."

37When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, "Brothers, what shall we do?"

38Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far offâ€"for all whom the Lord our God will call."

40With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, "Save yourselves from this corrupt generation." 41Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day.

That's a very interesting point, Mr. Koddi. I was touched by his genuine plea and his response, "The only hope, Sir!".

A good friend of mine, who is now a 2nd year Law Student at Duquesne University School of Law, always had a habit of greeting someone with a irregular handshake that caught their attention. He would shake your hand and then firmly pull you to his center and look at you in the eye. And smile.

When I was first met him during my freshman year in college, he did thesame to me. It was my first impression.

Francis graduated M.C.L from Allegheny College with a bachelor in History.
He and I were classmates in many classes; we would debate in class and out of class many a times, even taking our conversation with us to lunch lol.

He is now starting his 2nd year in Law, and am confident he will be a great Trial Lawyer.
He has a very commanding personality.

Sultan Jamal ul-Azam, ruler of Sulu and North Borneo/ Sabah from 1862 to 1881, receiving a French official delegation. The chief qadi, an Afghan, sits behind the Sultan. Source: J. Montano, Voyage aux Philippines et en Malaisie (Paris, 1886).

The western part of Mindanao and the neighbouring islands were ruled by the sultanates of Sulu and Maguindanao but the former was more compact and better organized.

When the Philippine-American War broke out, the US had to concentrate its limited forces in the north. To hold at bay Moro resistance to its colonization of the Sulu Archipelago, the US, represented by Brig. Gen. John C. Bates, forged a treaty with Sulu Sultan Jamal ul-Kiram, known as the Bates Treaty.

The Spanish Treaty of Peace with the Sulu sultanate had allowed Spain to set up a small garrison on Siasi Island and in the town of Jolo. After their defeat by the U.S., the Spaniards turned over the Siasi garrison to the Sultan.

It was not until May 19, 1899 that the U.S. sent troops to take over the Spanish fort in Jolo. The Americans had not been able to get troops to Jolo sooner because they could not afford to send any troops outside the Luzon area. (Serious Moro resistance commenced in 1903).

Paseo de Iloilo, also known As Andaluz, (ahn-dah-LOOHS) is named for its province of origin. This is one of the most sophisticated courtship and flirtation dances of the Spanish era. The gentlemen compete among each other to win the heart of the dalaga, or young lady, by exemplifying chivalry, grace, and confidence.

I also note, Mr. Koddi, that first impression is critical.

Ive always made it priority to present myself to the best of my ability when applying for an internship, or when going into the hospital, or beginning a class with a new professor etc.

When you present yourself, walk in a confident manner. Keep your head up, chin up, shake your interviewer, professor, colleague with a firm handshake. Look into his/her eyes firmly. And smile politely.

Speak with a clear and resounding voice. Never too loud, and not too soft.

Be confident.

It is changing now. Now the newer generation of dentists are switching over to using amalgams for filling, some are now switching over to GIC (glass ionomer cement) fillings.

Good article, tho. Always have a ready mind, and don't be afraid to ask your doctor questions.

Thats why he / she went to school for so long. To answer questions. hehehe

The fastest I've driven was driving in I-80 West, a 300 mile long high way from eastern Pennsylvania to Western Pennsylvania. I was cruising at ~ 95mph and when the road was empty, i was going 100-105 mph.

Keko, it is the the sad reality of history. Only the ones that are well versed in history will know these historical figures, Rizal for example.

Spaniards are not the only ones; there are even Americans that do not even know the Louisianna Purchase , or the complete list of American Presidents.

In defense to Chicogon, though, I have worked closely with Spanish professors in Mexico as well as in Spain in my research and publication on Filipino National Evolution, which was part of my History Major Dissertation.

Jose Rizal is quite well known in Spanish higher education. The professors, the history students, the political scientists etc know him, but the average everday Spaniards that have no backing or understanding in colonial history will not known him.

I think it is important to expound on their importance, for individuals like these were pivotal in national consciousness.

Rizal's popularity in Spain began in the late 1880s when he published works in La Solidaridad, even making passionate followers of his works. Rizal was so well known in the intellectual community in his day that he had followers and readers from Brussels, Netherlands, Germany (Heidelburg), France, Britain, Portugal and of course in Spain.

It was only after Rizal's death and after the loss of the Philippines to the United States that Spain really did awaken. The defeat of the Spanish Empire to the United States in the Spanish-American War in 1898 was the motivating factor that led to the political awakening in Spain, the development of a parliamentary democracy and a move from the aristocratc parliamentary form that was set in place by Bourbon Kings.

I believe it was His Majesty King Alfonso XIII that said after Madrid defeat to America, "Dios Mio..el imperio español ha terminado. ha terminado."
(My God, the Spanish Empire is dead. It is over)

It was only after Spain's defeat that it followed the course of governmental remodeling. Since the loss of Her American colonies in the early 19th century, Spain was in a spiral downward and was incapable of preventing further revolutions in its last remaining colonies in Cuba, Puerto Rico, y Las Filipinas because Spain's communication channel was weak. That and the reign of the previous king, His Majesty King Alfonso XII was quite the conservative King. By the time the progressive King Alfonso XIII took the throne, it was already too late. Revolution in Cuba erupted, and even the Loyal Philippines rose up in dissension. The Philippines' eruption into revolution signaled the end for Spain's once mighty Global Empire.

History. Things happen for a reason. For a greater good. :)

Definately. Really smart women are a turn on, modesty aside.

I worked with a 4th year MED this last semester, she was cute.
But she taught me alot about pharm, gave me hints on patho etc.

Quick, to the point. and very gifted in vocabulary.

I loved how she corrected me time and time again. :)
