Benjamin’s touching foray into poetry proved to be unexpectedly popular, as the post garnered 22,000 likes and went on to be shared more than 14,000 times.

Netizens who felt inspired by the youngster’s words flooded the comments section to express their admiration for the boy.

One person wrote, “Thank you for sharing. I am going to show this to my son so he knows he isn’t alone,” while another person added, “Amazing. Who wants ‘normal’. Only dead fish go with the flow xx”.

“Each like, share and comment he’s received since has made him feel like not only does he fit in and belong in this world, but has also moved him beyond words that he’s touched so many,” Mr. Giroux said.

Benjamin, meanwhile,  was supposed to read his poem aloud to the class the following day, but he opted to stay home due to an anxiety attack.

A 10-year-old boy with Asperger Syndrome (AS) has captured the hearts of American netizens for his heart-wrenching poetry about what it’s like having the disease.

Benjamin Giroux, a primary school student from Cumberland Head Elementary School in Plattsburgh, New York, wrote the poem for his fifth-grade homework, entitled “I am”.

Citing reports from the Huffingtonpost, the young lad completed the homework enthusiastically, not leaving his family’s kitchen table until he was happy with the work he had done.

His father, Sonny, was moved to tears upon reading his son’s work and decided to share the poem with the National Autism Association, who posted it on Facebook.

“We [Benjamin’s parents] were both so proud, and yet so heartbroken, that this was how he felt,”  said the boy’s father.

Zunika was convicted of a separate charge of sexual exploitation under the Children and Young Persons Act and sentenced to eight months’ jail.

In its statement, the AGC noted that the prosecution had argued that the statute “was clearly intended by Parliament to be gender-neutral”, by setting out its legislative history.

“The prosecution had also submitted that an analysis of the wording of Section 376A(1)(b) in the context of the Penal Code as a whole showed that the provision was clearly intended to apply to both male and female accused persons,” the AGC added.

Having reviewed the written grounds of decision, “the prosecution has concluded that an appeal is merited against Senior Judge Kan’s finding (on Section 376A(1)(b))”.

The prosecution is also appealing against the decision to set aside Zunika’s plea of guilt and the order of acquittal of the six relevant charges, as well as the sentence imposed on the sexual exploitation charge. â€" TODAY

Singaporean woman acquitted of sexual assault, prosecution to appeal
Tuesday April 19, 2016
08:09 AM GMT+8

SINGAPORE, April 19 â€" The prosecution will be appealing the decision of a High Court judge who ruled that women cannot be charged with the offence of sexual penetration of minors â€" a decision that resulted in a woman being acquitted of six charges brought against her.

In a media statement issued yesterday, the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) said the ruling on the statute in question â€" Section 376A(1)(b) of the Penal Code â€"  is a matter of “public interest”.

The case in question involved Zunika Ahmad, 40, who was charged with 20 counts of sexually penetrating a teenage girl with a dildo on several occasions in a span of more than 20 months.

Zunika, who was born a woman but has identified as a man since her teens, had pleaded guilty to six of these charges, with the remaining counts to be taken into consideration for sentencing.

But her guilty plea to these charges were rejected by Senior Judge Kan Ting Chiu, who found that the choice of words for the statute would reasonably indicate that it was intended to apply only to male offenders.

“The reference to a person who has a penis cannot be construed to include a woman without doing violence to common sense and anatomy,” the judge had said.
#3617
But Senior Judge Kan Ting Chiu noted that relationships tend to progress over time.

“Grooming has this indication of preparedness and not a natural progression,” he said.

“You can be promiscuous without seduction or taking advantage. She wanted, the victim responded.”

In mitigation, Zunika’s lawyer N. Sudha Nair argued that her client had not deliberately tried to deceive the victim by pretending to be male. She had, in fact, been living as a male for most of her life.

Nair argued for a maximum jail term of three years to be imposed, so that Zunika can serve her sentence quickly and then undergo a sex change operation. She will be sentenced at a later date.

Zunika faces six more charges in the State Courts for immigration offences, voluntarily causing hurt, and permitting a false entry in a register. â€" TODAY

Three months later, the pair had an argument, and the victim told her family about their relationship. Zunika fled to Kedah, Malaysia, but decided to return to face the music. She was arrested at the airport on March 25 last year.

Psychiatric reports submitted to the court showed that Zunika suffers from gender dysphoria or transsexualism and displayed a strong desire to be male.

At 17, she started stuffing socks down her underwear, and later, began strapping on a dildo permanently.

The psychiatrist noted that Zunika even assumed the role of a man to the extent of obtaining a fictitious identity and marrying women by obtaining a fake passport. The first woman she married was pregnant with another man’s child.

Calling for a jail sentence of eight years, deputy public prosecutor Dwayne Lum said Zunika had abused the trust given by the victim’s father, who allowed his children to stay overnight at her house.

He added that Zunika had sexually groomed the girl, through the “increasingly lewd acts” they performed.
#3619
The two families were close, and the teenager and her two siblings would sometimes join Zunika’s family on outings and overseas trips.

In December 2011, the victim’s mother left her family.

Feeling sorry for the children, Zunika’s first “wife” invited them over to their house regularly.

The frequent meetings led to Zunika and the victim developing feelings for each other.

In January 2012, Zunika made the first move by kissing the girl â€" then 13 years old â€" on the cheek during a family outing.

Things escalated and two months later, they went from exchanging kisses to having regular sexual intercourse in Zunika’s bedroom or living room.

Zunika used a strap-on dildo or vibrators.

After about two years of the illicit relationship, Zunika decided to end the affair in December 2013.

SINGAPORE, Dec 8  â€" Born a woman, Zunika Ahmad wanted so much to be a man that she concealed her gender by identifying herself with a man’s name and even managed to marry two women in Indonesia without being exposed, by forbidding them from seeing or touching her genitalia, citing cultural beliefs.

The 39-year-old’s identity was revealed only after she was arrested in March last year for sexually abusing a teenage girl for about 20 months.

Yesterday, Zunika pleaded guilty to six charges of sexual penetration of a minor and one count of sexual exploitation of a young person.

Another 14 related charges will be taken into consideration during sentencing.

The court heard that Zunika, together with her two “wives” and a stepdaughter, lived two doors away from her victim, who cannot be named to protect her identity.

Find easy, unique recipes.

Need to plan your meals for the week? Use your idle time to find unique recipes on YouTube, Facebook or blogs. This is perfect especially when you’re trying to learn to cook or you just have that knack for cooking or baking.

Plan the barkada trip.

Don’t seem to have the time to sit down and book a flight or create an itinerary for your next trip? Use your idle time wisely by making your smartphone your travel assistant. Find great travel deals, make a hotel reservation, search for top destinations, make some calls, and accomplish other things to make that trip happen.

Free up some space on the phone.

The best time to get rid of old content in your phone is when you have nothing else to do. Delete unnecessary photos, messages, files, videos, music and apps to free up some space. This speeds up your phone and makes room for new and possibly more important content in the future.

When you think about it, you can do better than playing games, watching videos and listening to music on your smartphone when you have to pass time. You can always choose to be productive instead.

MANILA, Philippines â€" Can you honestly survive boredom without your smartphone? You can’t. Just think about that time when you had to wait too long in the line, sit for an hour for a boring lecture, survive a dull date night, and bear the long commute going home.

Often, games, music and videos keep you entertained and saneâ€"thanks to technology! But did you know that you can also stay productive as you use your phone to kill time?

Here’s a trick: If you’re most likely going to have idle time in any given day, prepare a list of to-do’s that contains tasks which you can accomplish specifically on your phone. You can get rid of boredomâ€"productivelyâ€"this way. Here are a few things you can put in that list:

Feed the brain.

Have you tried reading books on your phone? With e-books and readers like Kindle, you can always bring a book with you and read it anytime and anywhere. There are a lot of free books you can download, so take advantage of these now so you can give your brain a little work on your waiting times.

Boost creativity.

There are a lot of apps that you can download to stimulate your creativity. For example, you can experiment on your photo editing skills on VSCO or Photoshop Touch. There are also coloring books and doodle apps. Puzzle games also boost creativity. A lot of creative ideas are also shared on Pinterest.

Such is the idea behind concept art, the designers will have plenty of time to tweak the details in the next few years, if they wish.

Reports said the new Daxing airport will have seven runways, capable of handling an annual passenger flow of around 100 million. It will also cover a massive area of 6,600 acres.

One user questioned whether the design was intended to “seduce the People’s Daily building”, which resembled a penis when it was being built.

#3635

People have suggested it complements the People’s Daily building (CEN)

#3636
But web users in China, where the airport is to be built, are not impressed.

Hadid’s stunning building design has almost no straight lines â€" but is embarrassingly being compared to a vagina as a result.

Those sharing the concept photos of the new Beijing Daxing International Airport are outraged by the design â€" and are taking the chance to ridicule Hadid, who passed away from a heart attack at the end of March this year, aged 65.

While the project is still a few years away from completion â€" with the current date set in September 2019 â€" web users are wondering if none of the architects on the design team managed to spot the glaring resemblance.

One illustration has been posted online that shows the outline of a woman, with the centre of the airport as her privates.

Montgomery says octopuses get out of aquariums so frequently not because of their Houdini-like escape skills, nor because they’re lonely â€" they’re solitary creatures â€" but because they are generally super curious.

"It doesn't mean that Inky was unhappy where he was,” Montgomery said. “Astronauts don’t go into outer space because they don't like Earth, they just want to see what else is out there."

Aquarium manager Yarrall says Inky was brought to the aquarium from a nearby reef just a few years ago, so it’s likely he'll be able to survive in the wild.

And while he didn't leave a note, there was a different telltale sign that he did, indeed, escape and wasn't stolen: a trail of water from his tank to that drainpipe of freedom.
#3644
According to Montgomery, octopus escapes from aquariums are common.

"They can squeeze through the tiniest spaces and easily, a 100-pound octopus can squeeze through an opening the size of an orange,” Montgomery said.

The drain pipe in the New Zealand aquarium was about 6 inches wide.

Octopuses can typically squeeze through an opening as small as their mouths, or beaks, as they are the only hard part of their body.

"Their muscles are less like our biceps than our tongues,” Montgomery said, “so they can flow in a way that, even if our muscles were detached from our bones, our muscles could not do."

A slime covering Inky's skin would have prevented it from drying out as he oozed from his tank to the drain that led to his freedom. And the suckers on his tentacles, which octopuses can use to taste food, would have also helped propel him across the floor.

"Each sucker can lift an enormous amount of weight,” Montgomery said.

According to Montgomery, a 3-inch-diameter sucker on a giant Pacific octopus can lift 30 pounds.

Inky the octopus's great escape isn't really all that surprising â€" or unusual
PRI's The World

A well-loved octopus named Inky escaped recently from the National Aquarium in New Zealand.

Aquarium manager Rob Yarrall says the lid to the octopus’ tank was left slightly ajar after maintenance one night.

"He found this rather tempting, climbed out,” Yarrall says, “and he managed to make his way to one of the drain holes that go back to the ocean, and off he went, and didn't even leave us a message, just off and went!"

The escape happened earlier this year, and hit the New Zealand national press Tuesday.

"Octopuses are fabulous escape artists, and it's absolutely not surprising that he saw an opportunity to explore and he took it,” said Sy Montgomery, author of "The Soul of an Octopus."

This isn’t the first time a captive octopus decided to take matters into its own hands â€" er, tentacles. In 2009, after a two-spotted octopus at the Santa Monica Pier Aquarium in California took apart a water recycling valve, directed a tube to shoot water out of the tank for 10 hours and caused a massive flood, Scientific American asked octopus expert Jennifer Mather about the animals’ intelligence and previous such hijinks at aquariums.

“They are very strong, and it is practically impossible to keep an octopus in a tank unless you are very lucky. … Octopuses simply take things apart,” Mather said. “I recall reading about someone who had built a robot submarine to putter around in a large aquarium tank. The octopus got a hold of it and took it apart piece by piece. There’s a famous story from the Brighton Aquarium in England 100 years ago that an octopus there got out of its tank at night when no one was watching, went to the tank next door and ate one of the lumpfish and went back to his own tank and was sitting there the next morning.”

Yarrall said the aquarium has no plans to replace Inky, but it does intend to better secure the tank where now just one octopus remains.

“They are always exploring and they are great escape artists,” Yarrall said, according to Hawke’s Bay Today. “We’ll be watching the other one.”
#3664
“He managed to make his way to one of the drain holes that go back to the ocean. And off he went,” Yarrall told Radio New Zealand. “And he didn’t even leave us a message.”

The cephalopod version of “Shawshank Redemption” took place three months ago, but it only became public Tuesday. Inky, who already had some local renown in the coastal city of Napier, quickly became a global celebrity cheered on by strangers.

Inky had resided at the aquarium since 2014, when he was taken in after being caught in a crayfish pot, his body scarred and his arms injured. The octopus’s name was chosen from nominations submitted to a contest run by the Napier City Council.

Kerry Hewitt, the aquarium’s curator of exhibits, said at the time that Inky was “getting used to being at the aquarium” but added that staff would “have to keep Inky amused or he will get bored.”

Guess that happened.

Octopus slips out of aquarium tank, crawls across floor, escapes down pipe to ocean

By Karin Brulliard April 13 at 6:00 AM

Inky the octopus didn’t even try to cover his tracks.

By the time the staff at New Zealand’s National Aquarium noticed that he was missing, telltale suction cup prints were the main clue to an easily solved mystery.

Inky had said see ya to his tank-mate, slipped through a gap left by maintenance workers at the top of his enclosure and, as evidenced by the tracks, made his way across the floor to a six-inch-wide drain. He squeezed his football-sized body in â€" octopuses are very malleable, aquarium manager Rob Yarrall told the New Zealand website Stuff â€" and made a break for the Pacific.

CEBU CITY, Philippines â€" The province of Cebu declared a state of calamity on Monday, April 11, due to the dry spell.

El Niño has caused water sources to dry up in the province. Cebu City had already declared a state of calamity last week.

Last May 2015, the province had already declared a state of calamity for the same reason. Provincial board member Grecilda "Gigi" Sanchez said, however, the declaration lapses after 6 months. "There is a need to declare again, because that declaration is only good for 6 months," Sanchez said in Cebuano.

The declaration was authored by vice governor Agnes Magpale and co-sponsored by Sanchez.

She said that funds are needed to help farmers affected by the damage. "Just look around, it's very dry. There are lots of areas that need water."

Next week, the provincial government will deploy the Rapid Assessment Team to assess the agricultural damage caused by El Niño.

A P34-million quick response fund was approved with the declaration. While some board members protested the need to declare another state of calamity, provincial board member Alex Binghay said that this was to make sure that a repeat of Kidapawan does not happen, "It doesn't make any difference at all, the declaration now and the declaration before, but the difference is we could have been prepared already."

Binghay added, "so when the mountain barangays ask for it [the assistance], we can give it right away."

Calamity declared in Bohol

The neighboring province of Bohol was also placed under a state of calamity on Thursday, April 7.

According to the Bohol Chronicle, 27 of Bohol's 47 towns are heavily affected by El Niño. Officials estimate agricultural damage to be at P312 million. At least 12,000 hectares of rice, cornfields, other high value crops and fish ponds have been damaged by the drought.

The drought is expected to last until late May or early June this year. â€" with reports from Richale Cabauatan, Agnes Mulet, and Zia Esmalin /Rappler.com

Eighty-six percent of the rich people in his study made a habit out of associating with other success-minded individuals. On the flip side, "they also make a point to limit their exposure to toxic, negative people," he explains.

The importance of substituting negative friends and acquaintances for positive individuals stems from the fact that positivity was a hallmark of the rich people he studied â€" and we emulate the people we associate with.

"Long-term success is only possible when you have a positive mental outlook," Corley states.

He's not the only one to suggest that negativity derails success â€" or that your relationships could affect your financial success.

Nearly a century ago, journalist Napoleon Hill drew similar conclusions after researching over 500 self-made millionaires. "Men take on the nature and the habits and the power of thought of those with who they associate," he wrote in his 1937 bestseller, "Think and Grow Rich," and "there is no hope of success for the person who repels people through a negative personality."

The bottom line: Negativity will derail you from pursuing success, and like attracts like. Avoid the pessimists and start hanging out with the optimists.

A man who studied rich people for 5 years found that they avoid one type of person

Kathleen Elkins

Who you hang out with matters more than you may think.

In fact, your friendships could have a major impact on your net worth.

After researching the daily habits of wealthy people for five years, author Thomas C. Corley found that they avoid one type of person at all costs: pessimists.

"Self-made millionaires are very particular about who they associate with," Corley writes in his book, "Change Your Habits, Change Your Life." "You are only as successful as those you frequently associate with. The rich are always on the lookout for individuals who are goal-oriented, optimistic, enthusiastic, and who have an overall positive mental outlook."

There has been some concern among locals that marbles fired from catapults could badly injure civilians, but Abhishek Jorwal, chief of police in the Jind district, denies this. “Marbles and chili balls won’t cause any permanent damage but will pack enough punch to push protesters back,” he said. “Officers have been instructed to use slingshots and tear gas shells, and keep (pellet) guns and bullets as the last options.”

“It’s not like we plan to use marbles on peaceful protesters,” Rao added. “It’s only meant to control hostile people. We have to step in and take certain action when people are burning government property, cars. This is a very, very positive step â€" a civilised cost-effective weapon. Plus it is much better than firing plastic bullets which can cause pretty bad injuries.”

I guess it just goes to show that childhood pastimes can come in handy as job experience.

In a bid to better control unruly crowds that gather during protests, police in northern India have decided to replace their modern arsenal with rudimentary weapons like slingshots and chili powder balls. The decision was made after they realised that these “non-lethal” options might prove to be more effective than water cannons or tear gas.

“It is much better than firing plastic bullets that can cause bad injuries,” said Anil Kumar Rao, the Inspector General of Police in the state of Haryana’s Hisar district. “It will be used only in emergency cases so that we can manage minimum collateral damage.”

Police officers are currently being trained in the use of these “specially designed” locally made slingshots, learning to fire plastic balls filled with chili powder as accurately as possible. And if chili doesn’t prove effective enough, they plan to switch to marbles.
