warnings are better served first.  mora man hinoon nig sabunotan ug duha ka babayeng harvatan...

by the way, court stenographers in cebu cite a certain republic act in asking for 500 pesos (and this was 6 years ago; pila na kaha karon) from litigants before a hearing.  my understanding was nothing will happen to one's case if one didn't pay upfront, kay kinsa man intawoy mo-record sa proceedings.

pissed off kaayo ko ani.  suweldado na god na sila sa government.  unya kana diay intawong uban nga galugos nga makagunit ug 500, way mahinabo kun naay kaso.  justice proves expensive hereabouts.  mag-unsa na lang ko kun uroy magsugod na kog pangiha ug animal cruelty.  does this republic act on payment for stenographers by court clients really exist?  anybody out there who knows the answer?

kun non-existent ni nga strange republic act, karong march, balikan nako tong mga babayhana sa cebu ug akong nawngon.  honest.

p.s. my lawyer's advice at the time was to pay or nothing will happen.

Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue from 1811 becomes online hit

It was a runaway success when published in 1811 by soldier Francis Grose, but now the Dictionary Of The Vulgar Tongue is getting tongues wagging again after being published online.

It was first available when Britain was under threat from Napoleon but it has now been re-published for free at the Project Gutenberg online digital library.

The book includes gems suchs as 'ace of spades' for a widow, 'all-a-mort' to be struck dumb, and 'angling for farthings', which means to beg out of a prison window with a cap or box.

The dictionary has already become an online hit.

Explaining the book in the preface at the time, the author writes "The merit of Captain Grose's Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue has been long and universally acknowledged."

But its circulation was confined almost exclusively to the lower orders of society: he was not aware, at the time of its compilation, that our young men of fashion would at no very distant period be as distinguished for the vulgarity of their jargon as the inhabitants of Newgate.

From Alturas to Dampas, tricycle drivers would now demand P50. Lupig pay taxi sa Manila. I hope the city councilors in Tagbilaran City would act on these round-the-clock abuses done to our commuters.

eeekkk!  daylight robbery.  maayo pa diay tong mga nieces nako sa elementary pa sila.  nanakay, kahibawo nga way ipamelete kay gihurot ug palit ug ice cream ilang money, mao nga pag-abot dapit sa ilaha, ning-karatil ug panagan.  way nahimo ang pedicab driver.  bawos-bawos lang...

In Tagbilaran, it's not about fair fare. Ang ilang question sa dili pa ka mosakay: "Pilay imong hatag?" If you pay the minimum P8, mosutoy ug sibat.

Something must be done with these abusive tricycle drivers in Tagbilaran City.

i'm hopeful that something will be done, one day soon.  who would believe that manila airport taxis will be what they are now; fair, organized, and duly accredited.  it's no longer scary to go down an airplane in manila.  as for the rest of the metropolis, well, we still hear the very same profound question fielded by tagbilaran's pedicab drivers... "magkano ang ibibigay mo?  ma-traffic, e."  bakit, kasalanan ko ba ang traffic?

History / Re: The painter Adolf Hitler
February 26, 2012, 11:32:13 PM
THE best of the paintings shows a war-torn streetscape -- a lamppost leaning away from a shrapnel-nicked brick building.  The background reveals the facade of a gutted church, its purpose burned away.  There is no one on the street; life has been chased, bombed, swept from this Belgian village where the soldier-artist found such devastation.  The artist was good enough to make his living at this for some years.  But he realized he was not going to make his mark as a painter.  He changed careers and became far more successful in another line of work.  His name was Adolf Hitler.

Case rested.  Let others find themselves submerged in health-challenging, dog-eat-dog material pursuits.  They will all, sooner or later, need to restore their equilibrium and revitalize their spirits.  And we will welcome them with open arms in our fun paradise for that purpose.  That’s our nature.  So let’s go with the flow.  There are, at any point in time these days, about 500,000 Korean tourists in the Philippines.  That’s only about 1 percent of the South Korean population.  Apply that percentage to the Chinese population and there is a virtual tsunami of 13.4 million potential tourists to deal with.

This is not farfetched.  Japan’s tourism program started to rise in the late 1960s when its economic strength was just beginning and its total population was only 100 million.  It didn’t take long before swarms of Japanese tourists following little flags became commonplace worldwide.  Chinese economic strength is on the rise and a similar tourism phenomenon is both imminent and inevitable in far greater numbers.

So “It’s more fun in the Philippines” as the fighting theme?  You bet!  You have it spot-on, Secretary Ramon Jimenez.  Go for it.  Your Philippine tourism strategy deserves the support of everyone.

Article 3.  We are by nature friendly, hospitable and charmingly self-deprecating.  It’s part of our DNA.  What other adults or even senior citizens on the planet would unabashedly introduce themselves with nicknames like Babyboy, or Bimbo, or Dong, not to mention Dingdong, Bongbong or Tingting?  What do we care?  A rose by any name will be as sweet.  Even an impeachment is more fun in the Philippines.  What other prosecution team would fantasize about “a small lady” at a time when a real live “little lady” is most likely the ultimate target of the whole exercise?  Where else would you find a head of state going hammer and tongs after the corrupt while simultaneously gracefully (pun intended) engaging in a pursuit of the latest apple of his eye with roses and perfume?  Such remarkable multitasking is worthy of adulation, admiration and perhaps even emulation, as contrasted with the multitasking of Bill Clinton at the height of his cigar prowess or Berlusconi’s in your face (pun also intended) peccadilloes.

Article 2.  The Philippines’ amenities/customs are hard to beat.  For one thing, what country on earth starts Christmas in September and carries it on until close to Valentine’s Day?  Where else in the region can one carry on a conversation, official or otherwise, without interpreters that can make the exchange at least twice as long?  Furthermore, it’s a fact stated frequently by our Japanese and Korean friends, among others, that it’s cheaper (and more fun) to fly to the Philippines to play golf than to do so in their own countries.  A typical golfer in Japan (say in Tokyo) would probably have to get up at 3 a.m. to take a train trip of more than an hour standing up in a crowded coach, to get to a golf course and wait for at least another three hours to be able to tee off for a game that would cost the equivalent of at least $300, without a caddy.  Such suffering is unheard of here.

Article 1.  Many places in the Philippines are world-class.  I’ve been to Blue Grotto on the Isle of Capri, but with all due respect to romantic Capri, it’s not quite the Underground River of Palawan.  That’s probably why the latter, not the former, is now recognized as a “world wonder.”  Also, many countries in the region focus on the development of an island as a centerpiece of their tourism strategyâ€"i.e., Bali in Indonesia, Langkawi in Malaysia, Jeju in Korea, Phuket in Thailand, Hainan in China, Goa in India, etc.  Sorry, fellas, I’ve been to all of these but none of them can compare with the breathtaking scenery and sheer variety of nature’s bounties that are found in Palawan or Bohol.  As for beaches, don’t get me started!  If you can find one in the region as good as Boracay, it’s probably also in the Philippines.

Fun, fun, fun!

“Incredible India,” “Remarkable Indonesia,” “Malaysia Truly Asia.”

These are among the catchy tourism slogans that bombard our sensibilities as we watch CNN.  Like many of you, I watch with growing impatience about when we would come up with our own such catchphrase, knowing well (bias notwithstanding) that the Philippines can more than be able to compete on even terms with any country in the tourism arena.  We did have “WOW Philippines,” which was okay, but perhaps just thatâ€"okay, but not compelling.  And, of course, “Pilipinas Kay Ganda” was stillborn for good reason.

Now along comes “It’s More Fun in the Philippines.”  Can that be pulled off, the alleged copycatting from the Swiss notwithstanding?  I honestly think so, even if obviously not by itself.  I could suggest “improvements” like “Funtastic Philippines,” or “It’s More Fun in the Filiffines,” although the latter may not sit well with my dear friends from Famfanga.  But “It’s more fun in the Philippines” is more than just typical chest-beating to be expected of any country.  It just happens to be a simple statement of fact and I don’t need eight articles of unimpeachable proof to rest the case.  Three will sufficeâ€"Places, Amenities/Customs and People.

The crowd that gathered along EDSA stood their ground.  Brig. Gen. Alfredo Lim, commander of the Northern Police District, defied an order from Marcos to disperse the crowd.  Instead, he and his men defected to the Enrile-Ramos camps.

On the second day of the uprising, Sin continued his call for people power over “Radyo Bandido” with the help of broadcaster June Keithley.

On the second day, Ramos invited Enrile to join him at Camp Crame nearby.  Enrile and the RAM boys joined Ramos at the PC headquarters that afternoon.

That morning, military rebels attacked the government TV station Channel 4 which was guarded by soldiers loyal to Marcos.  The rebel soldiers overran the TV station after a brief gunfight.

I proceeded to Camp Crame where I saw the multitude gathered on EDSA.

A column of armored Landing Tank Vehicles (LTV) and Armored Personnel Carriers (APC) from the Philippine Marines, backed by other military vehicles under Brig. Gen. Artemio Tadiar arrived near the vicinity of Ortigas Avenue along EDSA.

The tanks threatened to mow people down under its massive metallic weight unless the crowd cleared the path leading to Camp Crame.  But the crowd stood their ground. Steadfast in their faith, the people kneeled in the middle of EDSA, raised their rosaries, brandished their crucifixes, and lifted their voices in prayers that drowned the rumble of the idling armored vehicles.

Tadiar gave the order to withdraw to Fort Bonifacio.  Another case of divine intervention?  Prayers and faith averted what could have been a bloody battle.

On the second day of the uprising, more soldiers defected to the Enrile-Ramos camp, and on the third day, February 24, an unexpected turn of events: The 15th Strike Wing of the Philippine Air Force (PAF) led by Col. Antonio Sotelo joined the rebels.

Many of the crowd cried tears of joy thanking God and through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the patron saint of the Philippines, for answering their prayers at the time the country needed most.

On Day 3, two Sikorsky helicopter gunships fired rockets at Malacanang.

On February 25, the First Scout Ranger Brigade of Brig. Gen. Felix Brawner defected to the rebels.  It was the last major fighting force of the Marcos regime.

Ramos had earlier promised Enrile that he and the entire Philippine Constabulary would back up the defense minister.

Ramos prepared to join Enrile who was in Camp Aguinaldo.  He instructed his driver, M/Sgt. Abel Modequillo to take a circuitous route as a security measure.  His convoy arrived at 6 p.m. in Camp Aguinaldo.

At a hastily called press conference at the Social Hall of the Ministry of National Defense, Enrile and Ramos jointly declared their breakaway from Marcos.

“Enough is enough, Mr. President,” Enrile said.

Ramos declared he was casting his lot with Enrile.  “The reason for my being here is because the Armed Forces of the Philippines has ceased to be the real Armed Forces which is supposed to be the defender of public safety and enforcer of the law.  What has developed under Marcos and Ver is an elite armed forces within the AFP that no longer represents the ranks and the officers’ corps of the Armed Forces of the Philippines.”

By this time, Cardinal Sin had aired his appeal.

Butz Aquino, brother of slain Sen. Benigno S. Aquino Jr. arrived at Aguinaldo with his supporters in ATOM (August Twenty One Movement).  He declared they were ready to protect Enrile and Ramos and the rest of the rebel soldiers “with our bodies.”

At 9 o’clock that evening, Ramos transferred from Aguinaldo to the Constabulary headquarters in Camp Crame to consolidate his defensive position.

Just before midnight of February 22, Marcos appeared on TV, accusing Enrile of plotting a coup.  Marcos warned Enrile and Ramos that he could annihilate them, together with the rebel forces and called on them to surrender to end “this stupidity.”

Cut off for the first time from Ramos whom I have covered for many years, I relied on other sources for my news dispatches.  I learned from one such source that the forces of Enrile and Ramos had prepared a contingency plan for any such attack.

They would defend Camp Aguinaldo and Camp Crame for a while after which they would disperse into small groups and launch a guerrilla warfare.

Enrile To Ramos: Are You With Me?

By BEN CAL*
February 24, 2012, 7:17pm
Manila Bulletin

(Editor’s note: The writer has covered the defense beat since 1974)

MANILA, Philippines â€" “Eddie, the time has come.  Are you with me?”

That question, put by Juan Ponce Enrile to Fidel Ramos on the phone, sealed the alliance that would challenge the armies of President Ferdinand Marcos in February 1986.

I was the night editor of the Philippines News Agency (PNA), the stateowned news agency, when the EDSA uprising broke out. Monitoring the events on television I was anticipating a bloodbath.

The breakaway military group of Enrile, the defense minister, and Ramos, the AFP Vice Chief of Staff, was entrenched in Camp Crame, ringed by the army of President Ferdinand Marcos.  It was a terrible mismatch.

The battle lines were drawn along EDSA, but the no-man’s land between the two forces was soon engulfed by a sea of humanity.  People Power was born.

Many attribute the “miracle” on EDSA to divine intervention.  They could be right, if you consider Manila Archbishop Jaime Cardinal Sin’s radio appeal for people to rush to EDSA to protect Enrile and Ramos’ ragtag band from the thousands of troops and column of tanks that Marcos had sent to crush the uprising.

Several thousands rallied to Sin’s call in the early evening of February 22.  The crowd would balloon to two million in the next four days.

Flashback to the afternoon of February 22, when Col. Gregorio “Gringo” Honasan, Col. Eduardo Kapunan and Maj. Noe Wong arrived at Defense Minister Enrile’s residence in Makati City.  They informed Enrile of their impending arrest.

Enrile called Ramos to ask his support.

At his house in Alabang, Ramos had just received the news that Enrile was about to be arrested. Soon after, the phone rang.  It was Enrile calling.

“Eddie (Ramos’ nickname), the time has come.  Are you with me?” Enrile said.

Additional Notes (of necessity for the curious-as-a-cat like islander)

Tintin is not to be confused with Rin Tin Tin.

Rin Tin Tin (often billed as Rin-Tin-Tin in the 1920s and 1930s) was the name given to a dog adopted from a WWI battlefield that went on to star in twenty-three Hollywood films.  The name was subsequently given to several related German Shepherd dogs featured in fictional stories on film, radio and television.

1928 movie ad

Origins

The first of the line (c. September 10, 1918 â€" August 10, 1932) was one of a litter of shell-shocked pups found by American serviceman Lee Duncan in a bombed-out dog kennel in Lorraine, France, less than two months before the end of World War I.  When Duncan found him on September 15, he was still blind and nursing.

The two pups from the litter that Duncan kept were named for woollen dolls called Rintintin and Nénette that French children gave to the American soldiers as good luck charms.  Duncan returned to the USA with them at war's end.  Rin Tin Tin settled at his home in Los Angeles, California, though Nénette had earlier died.  Rin Tin Tin was a dark sable color and had very dark eyes.

Nicknamed Rinty by his owner, the dog learned tricks and could leap great heights.  He was filmed making an 11-foot leap at a dog show by Duncan's acquaintance Charles Jones, who had just developed a slow-motion camera.  Seeing his dog being filmed, Duncan became convinced Rin Tin Tin could become the next Strongheart.  He later wrote, "I was so excited over the motion-picture idea that I found myself thinking of it night and day."

The Background

The Adventures of Tintin (French: Les Aventures de Tintin) is a series of comic albums created by Belgian artist Georges Remi (1907â€"1983), who wrote under the pen name of Hergé.  The series is one of the most popular European comics of the 20th century, with translations published in more than 50 languages and more than 200 million copies of the books sold to date.

Set during a largely realistic 20th century, the hero of the series is Tintin, a young Belgian reporter.  He is aided in his adventures by his faithful fox terrier dog Snowy (Milou in French).  Later, popular additions to the cast included the brash and cynical Captain Haddock, the highly intelligent but hearing-impaired Professor Calculus (Professeur Tournesol) and other supporting characters such as the incompetent detectives Thomson and Thompson (Dupont et Dupond).  Hergé himself features in several of the comics as a background character, as do his assistants in some instances.
