Weird and Extreme / Ask Benjamin One Million Dollars
January 20, 2011, 03:19:23 PM
Two months ago, Brooklyn comedian Craig Rowin made a YouTube video in which he simply asked if anyone could give him one-million dollars. For no reason. Just to give it to him. Today, Rowin confirmed that his ridiculous request was actually fulfilled by a mysterious millionaire named Benjamin. As proof of this unbelievable act of random largesse, Rowin made another video in which he produced a notarized letter from the man's lawyer and played a telephone message from the man left on his answering machine. He told the Daily News: "I'm overwhelmed right now. I'm trying to figure all this out right now." Rowin said he would collect his check at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater in Manhattan, where he performs improv, on February 2.

In the original video, celebrities Rowin asked for money included Lady Gaga, Warren Buffett, Gary Busey, Tom Seaver, Nelson Mandela, James Earl Jones, Rudy Giuliani, Ed Koch, actor Will Smith's kids, and the Chilean miners, apologizing if they weren't millionaires. The story appears to be legit, but we'll have to wait a couple weeks to know for sure. If it is legit, then I am officially asking Benjamin for a mere one-hundred-thousand dollars, as I expect Benjamin to be deluged with requests as this story circulates. - source: Nerve.com

January 20, 2011, 03:09:34 PM
AUSTRALIAN soldiers who are entitled to taxpayer-funded Viagra pills have been warned about the dangers of erectile dysfunction drugs and told they can have just four tablets a month.

Defence personnel, including those on active duty in places such as Afghanistan, have also been informed they must be medically assessed as suffering from sexual performance problems before the pills will be prescribed to them.

The Defence surgeon-general has issued a health bulletin in response to concerns about the possible over-use and over-prescribing of the drugs by military personnel.

The warning applies to Viagra and Cialis medication and states that a proper diagnosis of erectile dysfunction must be made before troops can qualify for the drugs.

Service personnel deployed overseas, who qualify to receive the drugs, continue to obtain them on deployment.

Defence said higher doses were available if prescribed by a medical officer. - source: news.com.au

A missing child was found dead in Australian floodwaters Thursday as rising rivers cut off southern towns and flash torrents hit already deluged areas, swamping evacuees and sweeping cars off the road.

Police discovered the three-year-old in waters about 500 metres (yards) from his family's home in rural New South Wales state late Wednesday, some 12 hours after he went missing on the remote property.

It was the first flood-related death in the eastern state and took the disaster's total toll to 33, including at least six children.

Another 12 people were missing in the worst-hit Lockyer Valley, in the devastated northeastern state of Queensland, after a savage torrent described as an "inland tsunami" swept through the region this month, claiming 20 lives.

A high-tech unmanned glider was dispatched to map the flood damage, particularly its impact on marine life in the nearby Pacific Ocean, as severe storms again lashed Queensland, unleashing flash floods and high winds.

Cars were swept off the road in Brisbane, Australia's third-largest city, which is still reeling from an unprecedented flood that engulfed 30,000 homes last week.

One man had to cling to tree branches after his car was tipped over, while a second was sucked into quicksand-like mud up to his neck in Bundaberg, to the north, before rescuers reached him.

Waist-high waters also rushed through the streets of Rockhampton, inundated earlier this month, and flooded the town's evacuation centre -- a cruel blow for those left homeless by the earlier deluge. - AFP

A Filipino community leader in San Francisco’s Bay Area was recognized recently by the U.S. Jefferson Awards Program in the field of Public Service among 50 recipients this year.

George Gange was honored in ceremonies at the Herbst Theatre of the San Francisco War Memorial and Performing Centre on January 13.

Known in the community as the “Music Man with a Mission,” Gange plays Filipino folk melodies with his "Filipino Veterans Rondalla” bringing smiles to the faces of listeners. His audience range from veterans in Palo Alto to seniors in nursing homes.

Gange is also known for raising funds for worthy causes and for serving as community coordinator in bringing the Consulate General to San Jose for consular missions.

The Jefferson Awards Program was established in 1972 to encourage and recognize individuals for their achievements and contributions in public and community service.

For his tireless efforts in serving the Filipino-American community in Northern California, Gange also received the Presidential Award for Outstanding Individuals and Organizations Overseas (Banaag category) from President Benigno S. Aquino III in official ceremonies held at Malacañang Palace in Manila last December. (PNA)

“The deadline has passed but we are not letting our guards down,” Col. Romeo Brawner told the Provincial Peace and Order Council during a meeting at the Bohol Tropics Thursday January 13.

“We are fortunate that we have surpassed the deadline set by Abu to kidnap foreign foreigners,” Brawner said during the recent assessment of the peace and security situation in Bohol.

“We will not let our guards down, we will maintain security not only in Panglao but the whole of Bohol as well, our boats will remain in the area and our focus will remain in place,” he added.

Governor Edgar Chatto also echoed Brawner pronouncements saying “The most critical moments are when we believe the danger has passed.”

Brawner, who leads the army Special Forces Battalion cited the intelligence report that said a band of Abu Sayaff bandits were heading to Bohol on a double-engine speedboat Monday January 10 to kidnap two foreign tourists.

Brawner also confirmed that the same intelligence report which said that the deadline for the operation was within January 10-11.

“Bohol was indeed a target for kidnapping by Abusayyaf, our Manila intelligence has confirmed,” Brawner shared.

Immediately after receiving the intelligence report, which was validated and was said to have come from a reliable agent in Zamboanga, police and military authorities in Bohol rolled into motion security operations and crisis management planning to get the most immediate deterrent assets in the general area where the hit was supposed to happen.

PSSupt Constantino Barot also immediately placed Bohol under a heightened security alert even as he directed the deployment of additional police troops, augmented police stations located within Panglao island and neighboring tourist islands of Balicasag and Pamilacan.

The Philippine Navy also sent a patrol boat while the Army Special Forces also deployed their sea asset to beef up security operations in the seas.

Barot also bared that the Philippine Air Force has committed an attack and a utility chopper for the operations of the area south of Bohol.

On this, Governor Edgar Chatto stressed that “Our preparedness would never be substituted by anything else.”

We should always have the capability to respond not only to the present, but future dangers and threats, Chatto told PPOC members. (racPIABohol)

Loay - Bohol / Police in Trouble
January 19, 2011, 01:52:10 PM
By Rey Anthony Chiu

Prosecutor Macario Delusa defends Camp Dagohoy head in the decision to relieve a cop and restrict him to barracks after being alleged with abuse of authority and police brutality.

Delusa believed the action of PSSUpt Constantino Barot in recalling to barracks PO2 Tomas Bullecer after complaints of police brutality was in order and was correct.

Reports said that Bullecer whipped a certain Severino Sanchez, 25 years old, who appeared at the Loay police station showing welts all over his body.

That same night, Bullecer also allegedly barged into another house and sought personalities he reportedly would like to slap.

The case was brought to a consultative assembly at the Bohol Tropics last week by Loay Mayor Rosemarie Imboy, apparently asking the Philippine National Police to impose sanctions.

Bullecer is the brother of a mayoralty candidate who run against Mayor Imboy.

Bringing the same case to the Provincial Peace and Order Council Meeting Thursday, council members fear speculations that the police organization is mum about the allegations because of politics.

On the matter, PSsupt Barot said he has ordered the relief and barracks restriction to Bullecer to keep him from possibly influencing the investigations.

To show he has been impartial to the victim, Barot said he offered a police escort to keep the victim safe while he was filing his complaint at the Internal Affairs Service of the Philippine National Police.

Citing his adherence to due process, Barot said he can only do as much as he wants the accused police officer to be given due process by allowing investigative bodies to probe on the allegations.

On this, Delusa also added that an administrative case can be filed by the police to the Ombudsman against the accused while the victims could also go and file separate complaints to the People’s Law Enforcement Board (PLEB) to hasten the investigations.

“In this incident, its better that the police director initiates a case before the office of the ombudsman aside from the IAS and the PLEB”, he said.

By this, the chairman of the town PLEB committee can initiate an investigation as an aid in the gathering evidence against the accused, Delusa stressed. (racPIABohol)

The long arms of the law caught up with a Bohol fugitive in Ilo-ilo City some eighteen days after he wittingly slipped through 24 guards and 8 security cameras of the jail facility last December 26.

The fugitive, whom jail warden Reynan Torreon identified as Gary Gavino Curay alias Michael Gutierrez Curay was recovered at around 8:00 am, January 13 by a team composed by the Bohol Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) to pursue a lead that the escapee has escaped to Negros.

Governor Edgar Chatto immediately congratulated the BJMP for the recovery of Curay, who was serving time for theft and was facing rape charges in Bohol courts.

The Bohol team, composed of SJO3 Medard Bompat, Jo1 Julius Lacea ug Jo1 Fidelberto Sanoy had to cross to Negros together with an informant to recapture Curay, Torreon said during a radio interview Thursday.

“An informant told us about it and we immediately crafted a team and sent them to Ilo-ilo,” Torreon said.

After his escape, a bounty of P50,000 was offered to whoever could give information leading to Curay’s re-arrest.

It may be recalled that Curay bolted the BJMP facility in Cabawan district of this city by outmaneuvering 24 guards on duty and 8 closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras.

In an aired telephone interview, JSupt Torreon said Curay was able to slip through the CCTV cameras “as most were not focused on the paths which Curay used to escape.”

Torreon, who learned of the recapture by text message from his men in Ilo-ilo said the recovered criminal and escorts would board an Ilo-ilo boat bound for Cebu before getting a ride to Bohol.

Chatto on the other hand called the successful operations a triumph in dynamic exchange of information and good intelligence networking.

Gov. Chatto told the Provincial Peace and Order Council that he has instructed the Provincial General Services Office and the Provincial Engineer to strengthen any weak links in the jail security perimeter to discourage any future attempts by prisoners. (racPIABohol)

Auctions are now a common way of acquiring properties of various kinds. An auction is basically an event, where different things are sold by way of bids. A 17-year-old pianist from a tiny town in Nebraska was crowned the 90th Miss America on Saturday, inheriting the coveted title in an iconic but beleaguered pageant hoping she'll help that is striving to regain its prominence.

Teresa Scanlan, the youngest ever, said her age will help the pageant regain some of its relevance in the popular culture as she travels to advocate against eating disorders.

"This just shows that no matter where you come from, you can accomplish anything you want," she said at a post-event press conference. "I'm really excited it doesn't matter how old you are and to get some new girls into the program."

Scanlan's age was clearly an issue for judges as they deliberated, and several of them referred to it.

"I have to say I was skeptical about having a 17-year-old girl as Miss America, but this is a 17-year-old woman who is very knowledgeable about current events, about pop culture, very knowledgeable about her platform," said Marc Cherry, creator of the TV show Desperate Housewives. "I was sold."

Scanlan received a diamond tiara and a $50,000 scholarship she plans to use to help pay for a law degree.

She said she hopes to be a criminal attorney and potentially an elected representative. She hails from a town of 8,000 people where she is one of seven children born to the daughter of Yugoslavian immigrants who fled the Communist takeover.

During the talent portion of the show, she played Whitewater Chopsticks on the piano, the only instrumentalist among the final 10 who performed.

In the question-and-answer portion of the competition that immediately preceded her coronation, the beauty queen was asked her opinion of how the United States should address the release of classified documents by WikiLeaks.

She was vague about what should be done but she referred to WikiLeaks' actions "espionage."

During the press conference, she said the release of thousands of cables was "a huge issue of national security. There are areas where free speech becomes a matter of national security. We have to be very careful with that."

The gleeful teen is now standard-bearer for a legendary competition that has fallen on hard times in recent years as the public became more interested in the rival Miss USA pageant.

I immensely enjoyed my one-on-one interview with my beloved “sister,” Princess Punzalan-Field, on TV5’s “Paparazzi.” Has she watched the show of her ex, Willie Revillame?

“Not yet because I’m busy shooting,” she said. “They have to rush my scenes because I’m flying back to the United States first week of February to continue my nursing course. But I heard ‘Willing Willie’ is doing well. I’m sincerely happy for him because all his dreams have been fulfilled. Beyond his expectations pa. I just pray that he finds the right girl.”

What’s her unsolicited advice to Shalani Soledad who’s Willie’s current squeeze?
“It’s hard to give advice because I don’t know the real score between them and I haven’t met Shalani. Siguro as a general advice lang dapat maging very patient ang kahit sinong girl na ma-i-involve kay Willie. Nung naging kami I was only 18. What I used to do pag mainit ang ulo niya, hinahayaan ko muna lumamig. Di dapat sabayan.”

What’s her fondest memory of Willie? “When my mom died, takot na takot siya multuhin ni Mommy so kahit sa banyo nagpapasama siya sa akin (laughs).”

What’s the best advice of her mom (Helen Vela) that she follows to this day? “She told me na bilog ang mundo. You’ll never know na ang taong down ngayon eh bukas nasa taas na, so we should treat people equally.” - pdi

Australian actress Nicole Kidman and her husband country music singer Keith Urban announced Monday the birth of their second child, Faith Margaret.

The girl was born on December 28 in Nashville, Tennessee, her "proud parents" said in a statement. Faith Margaret Kidman Urban was born through a surrogate mother but is Kidman and Urban's biological child, they added.

"Our family is truly blessed, and just so thankful, to have been given the gift of baby Faith Margaret. No words can adequately convey the incredible gratitude that we feel for everyone who was so supportive throughout this process, in particular our gestational carrier."

Kidman and her husband, both 43, seemed to have waited until after Sunday's Golden Globes award ceremony was over before making the announcement.

The couple attended the awards gala in Beverly Hills, where Kidman was nominated for her leading role in "Rabbit Hole." However, it was Natalie Portman who took home the win for best actress after her "Black Swan" performance. - afp

Malacañang on Tuesday defended the appointments of singer Ogie Alcasid and Philippine Daily Inquirer columnist Conrado de Quiros to the EDSA People Power Commission, saying the two have the trust of President Benigno Aquino III.

Radyo Inquirer quoted presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda as saying that the administration trusts Alcasid to help the youth remember and appreciate the EDSA People Power, which put Aquino’s mother, Corazon, into the presidency.

The report said Alcasid will be a “big instrument” to the youth with his appointment as convenor of the music and entertainment sector.

Malacañang also cited the importance of de Quiros, despite his earlier criticisms of the Cory administration. - pdi

Business and Economy / Chrome Plating Tips
January 18, 2011, 12:50:31 PM
There are two types of Industrial chromium plating solutions: hexavalent chromium baths whose main ingredient is chromic anhydride and trivalent chromium baths whose main ingredient is chromium sulfate or chromium chloride. Trivalent chromium baths are not yet common, due to restrictions concerning color, brittleness, and plating thickness. For decorative purposes, the best combination would be chrome and nickel which offers the most protection against corrosion. It will have a mirror finish that will only be as good as the finish you put on the surface before you put on the chrome. - read more here

The Philippine Airlines (PAL) flight attendant who was called a “menopausal bitch” by Representative Eulogio Magsaysay of Alliance of Volunteer Educators party-list has filed a complaint before the ethics committee against the lawmaker on Monday.

Sarah Bonnin-Ocampo, who is also a member of the PAL Employees Association (Palea), was accompanied by members of the union to formally lodge the complaint in the House of Representatives.

At 10 a.m., Palea trooped to the Office of the Ombudsman to file a criminal complaint.

Magsaysay is accused of grave slander, serious misconduct, conduct unbecoming of a high ranking public official, and direct solicitation of personal favor or gain using his office, according to lawyer Bernadette Carrasco, counsel for Ocampo.

Asked for a reaction to the complaint, Magsaysay said in a text message, “That’s her right.”

“We wish that Sarah’s fight for justice will blaze a trail in the struggle for workers’ dignity. Service workers in the airline industry and call centers among others suffer indignities in the workplace through no fault of their own but receive no protection from their employers or the government,” Ginalyn Licayan, head of the Palea women’s committee, said.

Licayan said there are many workers who need support and protection against “abusive officials and insensitive customers.”

The labor group Partido ng Manggagawa expressed support for Ocampo.

“Sarah’s fight is the fight of all working women. We call on women workers and women advocates to stand up in support of Sarah against sexism and for dignity,” Judy Ann Miranda, secretary-general of the group, said.

Miranda also raised question against Magsaysay's qualification as a party-list representative.

“Magsaysay’s abusive behavior toward a woman employee exposes his pretensions as a representative of the marginalized. What underrepresented sector exactly does Magsaysay’s Alliance of Voluntary Educators speak for? It appears that Magsaysay as an advocate of the marginalized is as fictional as Mikey Arroyo being a representative of tricycle drivers,” she said.

The decline of India’s oil-intensiveness started off towards the beginning of this millennium with the growth of the less oil-dependent services sectors and improved energy-efficiency in the manufacturing facilities. Research also shows that although a large portion (about 70%) of its local requirement is met through import, it is the high export revenue from the petroleum products that offsets the ballooning import bill to a large extent. - read more here

Bohol Chronicle: The ambush of two members of the Uy family of Baclayon town, known wealthy copra buyers, may not only be plain robbery.

This was the observation of PNP Prov'l Director Constantino Barot Jr. who immediately headed Task Force Uy to hunt the perpetrators who shot dead Conchita Realista Uy, 69 while seriously wounding her brother, Angelito, 66 while both were on board their multicab cruising the highway in barangay Canapnapan, Corella town last Thursday morning.

The PNP director said that the manner the suspects chased the victims whose multicab already fell on a canal could prove something beyond the motive of robbery. In fact, some paper bills amounting to P31,000 were found in the exit route of the suspects.

Robbers normally declare a hold-up, Barot said.

However, in the case of the Uys, the suspects never declared a hold-up but just kept on firing, aiming at the seat of Angelita, based on the traces of bullets in the vehicle.

"We are in doubt that robbery was the main motive," the PNP director theorized.

Police Inspector Miguel Jimenez from PNP Corella said the Uys who are engaged in copra buying were heading to Corella town when two unknown suspects on board a black and white XRM motorcycle tried to overtake the multicab driven by Angelito.

Sensing the danger, Angelito sped up the vehicle. However, the back rider of the motorcycle started to fire shots aiming to the victims until a bullet hit one of the tires.

The Uys moved farther ahead until the other tire was again hit which caused the vehicle to skid towards a canal.

In its initial investigation, the police noted that the suspects went past the victims' vehicle and turned back for a clean shot on Angelita, causing her instantaneous death.

A 23-year old helper of the Uys who was at the back of the vehicle managed to jump from the multicab and sought refuge in a nearby house.

The suspects, after hitting the victims, took the brown shoulder bag containing an undetermined amount of cash and immediately escaped heading towards Sikatuna town, police investigators said.

Responding police personnel recovered paper bills in the two brown shoulder bags amounting to P31,560 left by the suspects as they hurriedly left the crime scene.

The Uys were rushed to the Ramiro Hospital where Conchita was confirmed dead while her brother was attended to by physicians. Angelito was transferred to another hospital where he has been pronounced out of danger. (Anthony Aniscal)

Google, which opened an online bookstore last month, said Thursday that it has acquired eBook Technologies, a company which makes digital reading products.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

"We are happy to welcome eBook Technologies' team to Google," a Google spokeswoman said in a statement.

"Together, we hope to deliver richer reading experiences on tablets, electronic readers and other portable devices," she said.

In a statement on the company website, eBook Technologies said it was "excited to announce that we have been acquired by Google.

"Working together with Google will further our commitment to providing a first-class reading experience," said eBook Technologies, which offers e-book readers and an e-reading platform.

With the opening of Google eBookstore in the United States last month, the Internet search giant jumped into the booming e-book market long dominated by Kindle-maker Amazon. - AFP

Technology / Myspace Website For Sale
January 15, 2011, 10:41:53 PM
Agence France-Presse

News Corp. said Thursday it is exploring "strategic options" for Myspace amid reports it is considering a sale, merger or spinoff of the ailing social network.

The reports that News Corp. is looking to sell Myspace, which it bought for $580 million in 2005, only to see it be eclipsed by Facebook, surfaced a day after the social network cut 500 employees, nearly 50 percent of its staff.

Asked about the reports, a News Corp. spokeswoman told AFP: "We're exploring all our strategic options for the business."

The News Corp.-owned Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday that Myspace chief executive Mike Jones told employees in a companywide meeting on Wednesday that News Corp. is exploring a sale, merger or spinoff of Myspace.

Citing a "person familiar with the matter," the newspaper said News Corp. is in the early stages of the process and plans to conduct meetings with potential partners in the near future.

“We will deliberate on whether the increase is 50 centavos or P1 for the first 4 kilometers,” sabi ni Atty.

- ABS-CBN

Arrogance is a universal sin. If there are 1 million Americans that you met in your life and you found them to be arrogant, that won't do justice to the 299 million Americans who may not be arrogant.

What is true to one may not be true to all. What is true to many may not be true to one.

Bohol has a population of 1.2 million. Let's say another 1 million Boholanos are living here and abroad. That would bring to a total of 2.2 million Boholanos.

If you met 1 or 2 Boholanos who are arrogant, is it fair to say that the 2,199,999 Boholanos whom you have not met are arrogant too?

We can increase the probability. Let's say you met 1,000 Boholanos who displayed arrogance, will it make the 2,199,000 Boholanos whom you have not met arrogant?

What if the 1,000 Boholanos you met showed arrogance only on that particular day (the fact of imperfection) but in their true nature they are humble 99% of the time (and you were not around during this 99% of the time), can we say that they are arrogant?

When you go to a doctor who tells you that you don't have a cancer because the tissue that was diagnosed did not show cancerous cell, will you believe the doctor? What if the rest of the tissues that were not tested actually have cancer cells?

False assumption is dangerous.

Unfounded generalization can cause divisions.

Even if I meet 100,000 Ilonggos who are tikalon (arrogant/boastful), it would be unjustified for me to say that Ilonggos are tikalon because the 100,000 do not represent the millions of Ilonggos.

And if millions of Ilonggos are truly arrogant, it is still unfair and unjustified and it is foolishness to say that Ilonggos are tikalon if there are 100,000 Ilonggos who are not arrogant.

The existence of one does not prove the existence of many, and the existence of many does not prove the existence of one.

Bohol Latest News / Bohol Can Supply the Global Market
January 14, 2011, 05:01:58 PM
By Rey Anthony Chiu
PIA

BOHOL non government organizations (NGOs) want the administration to take a closer look at the onset of globalization as a convenient vehicle for Bohol’s communities to hitch ride on out of poverty.

At least this was one personal view of a veteran organizer involved in community development work here.

Admitting he is not as familiar with the new administration’s development directions compared to the Aumentado Administration, Engr. Vicente Loquellano said he wished communities could engage the government in regaining the bid for Bohol to supply the global market with its products.

As executive director for People’s Fair Trade and Assistance Center (PFTAC), Loquellano has his NGO assisting small banana planters and in exporting their produce to Japan, a marketing strategy that they still could not fully maximize due to limited production.

“There is a big market of local bananas for chips,” Loquellano reminds Boholanos during the recent Kapihan sa PIA, which was aired live over DyTR Thursday.

He said there is still an open market in Leslie Foods Corporation which demands around 15,000 kilograms of bananas every other day, “one that we have seen but could not really supply because of the few number of banana producers.”

Loquellano hints that a provincial government support in this area could formally boost production and spur more jobs in the sector.

Loquellano was with Emiia Roslinda and Maithe Palo of the network of organizations under the Bohol Alliance of Non-Government Organizations (BANGON) to discuss prospects of community development for Boholanos.

The Kapihan Forum was also the capping celebration of the Community Development Week, celebrated every first week of January all over the country.

BANGON has been coordinating community development and has adopted focused area approach system to maximize resources and create bigger project impacts on scale, Roslinda explained.

Now into playing with convergence to the hilt, Bangon and its member NGOS have partnered with Local Government Units in providing technical support and in complementation of resources as cash investments, manpower in developing sustainable solutions to community issues, he said.

More than being a global agri products supplier, Bangon also hopes that the new ecotourism products of Bohol would find acceptance by foreign and local tourists who are truly into eco-adventure which are managed by communities, said Maithe Palo of BANGON. (racPIABohol)
