the politics (an example; expect much lobbying behind the scenes):

2009 National Artist of the Philippines controversy

In August 2009, the conferment of the Order of National Artists to seven individuals by President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo became controversial when it was revealed that musician Ramon Santos had been dropped from the list of nominees short-listed in May that year by the selection committee, and that four other individuals had been nominated to the title via "President’s prerogative": Cecilla Guidote-Alvarez (Theater), Magno Jose "Carlo” Caparas (Visual Arts and Film), Francisco Manosa (Architecture), and Jose “Pitoy” Moreno (Fashion Design).

Members of the Philippine art community, including a number of living National Artists of the Philippines, protested that the proclamation politicized the title of National artist, and made it "a way for President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to accommodate her allies."

Specific protests were raised regarding the nomination of NCCA executive director Guidote-Alvarez, because it was purportedly a breach of protocol and delicadeza (propriety), and of Carlo Caparas, because he was allegedly not qualified to be nominated under the categories of either Visual Arts or Film.

    Rolando S. Tinio
    Salvador F. Bernal
    Lamberto V. Avellana
    Wilfrido Ma. Guerrero
    Severino Montano
    Lino Brocka
    Fernando Poe Jr.

cinema
    Lino Brocka

meanwhile, i'll keep my fingers crossed because legislators aren't that idiotic.  her awards anyway can back the claim up.  still i'm awed.  there's nora there, in the pantheons of nick joaquin, fernando amorsolo, botong francisco, lucresia kasilag, napoleon abueva, etc.

what will they think of next?  resolve that the late iggy arroyo be canonized?
#34308
after nora, are vilma and sharon not far behind?  and what about presidential sis kris?  they're all in the same area of pop art, a.k.a. entertainment industry.  ambot uy.  mora man ug mabarato ang 'national artist' halo ani.  personal opinion lang ba...

sure, it was nora who had changed the concept of 'artista'--- not pretty enough, not mestiza, a water peddler at a train station in bicol who rose from poverty to the heights of national pop culture consciousness.  and she has the voice.  she inspired in that she set an example that anyone can have the chance and make it big.  but did that make her an artist?  i don't know.  besides, her 'trend' has somewhat stopped.  the actresses are back to "good looks", obviously, even with the help of plastic surgery.

what if this may open the floodgates to heaven knows what?  i now wonder if this is just an intro to something more sinister.  sorry, but the selection of a national artist has its own politics.  besides, a legislator has better things to do than give vent to his being a noranian because, heavens, what will the vilmanians say?

curious, i tried to search for what can be viewed of the prize winners.  the feature writing prize winner is riveting (rape and murder).  an excerpt:

The horror of what happened next made the court reporter's eyes well up, made the bailiff cry, had the whole room in tears. The jury handed around a box of tissues. The prosecutor took long pauses to collect himself. The family and friends in the courtroom cried (though, truth be told, they had been crying throughout). The Seattle Times reporter seated next to me cried. I cried. The camerawoman who was shooting video for all the television stations in town criedâ€"and later on hugged Butz's partner as she left the courtroom for the midmorning break. - The Bravest Woman in Seattle by Eli Sanders

remember heherson alvarez?  he was one of the leading first quarter stormers of old.  so anti-american kunohay.  he ends up an exile in the u.s. as part of the "steak commandos", comes back after marcos's downfall, gets a cabinet post, and runs for senator.

he was still a cabinet secretary while he campaigned for a senate seat.  in a press conference where attendees wanted to know about his department's solutions to existing problems, he kept trying to divert the discussion to his potential as senator.  well, he was moving around, campaigning, with a retinue of his department's employees, obviously using government time, money and people for his personal campaign.  and he's supposed to be an idealistic activist?  boy, was he arrogant.

TALIBAN militants launched a series of simultaneous attacks on government buildings and international agencies and embassies in Afghanistan yesterday in their biggest offensive this year.

The parliament, US, British, German and Russian embassies as well as NATO heaquarters and a hotel in Kabul were among the targets, the BBC reported. Militants said they had also targeted sites in Logar and Paktia provinces. There were also reports of suicide attacks in Jalalabad.

Armed militants seized a multi-storey building under construction in Kabul's diplomatic quarter, about a kilometre from the palace of President Hamid Karzai and the US embassy, Bloomberg reported. They exchanged gunfire with Afghan police and explosions were heard as the battle continued in the mid-afternoon. The attackers fired a rocket towards the headquarters of the US-led International Security Assistance Force, Tolo TV reported.

The Italian press on Sunday paid tribute to Morosini.

Turin-based Tuttosport's headline read, "We have lost a son", while La Repubblica's editorial was headlined, "Incredulous and helpless".

The Gazzetta dello Sport focused on the controversy over the medical assistance.

An inquiry has been launched into why a traffic police car had to be broken into and removed as it was blocking the ambulance's entrance.

The Corriere dello Sport focused on the tragic elements of Morosini's life, which left him alone with his disabled elder sister. "A life marked by pain," was its headline.

Morosini was an Italy under-21 international and played for a number of clubs, including Atalanta, Reggina, Padova, Bologna and Vicenza.

"He was golden, always trying to help his family," Atalanta youth team director Mino Favini told Associated Press.

Fifa president Sepp Blatter tweeted: "Only tears. There are no words to express what I tried to when I found out about Piermario Morosini's death."

The tragedy follows a similar incident involving Bolton's Fabrice Muamba last month.

He was technically "dead" for 78 minutes after collapsing in an FA Cup tie against Tottenham but is now making "strong and steady improvements".

Following Muamba's collapse, attention had been drawn to the situation for athletes in Italy, which has mandatory cardiac screening for all young people engaged in organised sport.

The charity Cardiac Risk in the Young says that the Italian measures have reduced the incidence of young sudden cardiac death in Italy by 90% in the 30 years since the screening was introduced.

'Only tears'

Morosini, 25, had been on loan from Serie A side Udinese when he collapsed on the pitch in the 31st minute while playing in Livorno's Serie B game at Pescara.

He tried to get up a number of times before receiving heart massage on the pitch. A defibrillator was also used before an ambulance took him to Pescara's Santo Spirito hospital.

Doctors there tried unsuccessfully to revive him for 30 minutes.

Hospital consultant Leonardo Paloscia said: "Morosini never had a single heartbeat again. From when I arrived he never gave a sign of revival, not in his respiration nor his heartbeat."

Dr Paloscia said it was unlikely any cause could be determined until after the autopsy.

Pescara goalkeeper Luca Anania said players did not immediately understand the seriousness of the incident.

"There was great confusion and I seemed to understand that there was also a bit of delay in help arriving. Some of my teammates helped carry the stretcher by hand to the ambulance."

Many players left the field in tears.

Italians have expressed shock and sadness at the death of Livorno footballer Piermario Morosini, who collapsed during a game on Saturday.

The grief was reflected in front-page headlines in most of Italy's Sunday newspapers.

Some focused on his tragic past. Morosini lost both his parents before he was 18, and shortly after that his disabled brother killed himself.

All Italian matches were cancelled and an autopsy will be held on Monday.

April 14, 2012, 08:52:04 PM
The word "Jurassic" is directly linked to the Jura Mountains (which run along the border of France and Switzerland).

Alexander von Humboldt recognized the mainly limestone dominated mountain range of the Jura Mountains as a separate formation that was not at the time included in the established stratigraphic system defined by Abraham Gottlob Werner and named it “Jurakalk” in 1795.  The name “Jura” is derived from the Celtic root “jor”, which was Latinised into “juria”, meaning forest (i.e. “Jura” is forest mountains).

as an adjective, the word jurassic means "Of or belonging to the geologic time, rock series, or sedimentary deposits of the second period of the Mesozoic Era, in which dinosaurs continued to be the dominant land fauna and the earliest birds appeared."

as a noun, it means "The Jurassic Period or its system of deposits."

The Jurassic Coast is a World Heritage Site on the English Channel coast of southern England. The site stretches from Orcombe Point near Exmouth in East Devon to Old Harry Rocks near Swanage in East Dorset, a distance of 153 kilometres (95 mi).  Chartered in 2001, the Jurassic coast was the second wholly natural World Heritage Site to be designated in the United Kingdom.  Its entire length can be walked on the South West Coast Path. 1.  no doubt.  but this leads to more questions.  are they men or women?  do they or don't they know nga uyab mo?  will they admit under pain of perjury that they were your uyabs? ;) the world is that complicated.  but you may keep your secrets to yourself, bai longs.  i'm just thinking like a plotter of storylines worthy of a james ban-dong movie. ;D

and he is a congressman!  :o

the bloody background of the trial:

THE trial of Ruben Ecleo Jr., congressman and cult leader, for the death of his wife Alona Bacolod-Ecleo, has taken many a twist and turn.

Running more than eight years now, since Jan. 8, 2002 when Alona's body stuffed in a trash bag was recovered, the murder case has produced side stories enough to fill a full-blown telenovela.

The charge in court is parricide, the murder of one's spouse. Still, it is a murder like no other because of the other episodes it has spawned.

No other whodunit had these bloody and riveting sidelights:

...Ecleo was arrested only after a police raid in which 23 cultists were killed.

...Alona's brother, a murder witness, and three other family members were massacred by a lone gunman, a cultist, whom police shot dead.

...A criminal case was filed in a Cebu town with another cultist owning up the same crime of which Ecleo is accused.

...A group of cultists were arrested with a cache of firearms.

...A woman private prosecutor was gunned down in her home.

Common elements

Ecleo's link to the incidents wasn’t proved despite the common elements: Ecleo, Alona's death, the Bacolods, and cult members.

Now a bizarre note as the defense presented its star witness Wednesday: Ecleo himself. Ecleo said the murdered woman wasn't Alona and he didn't kill her.

-excerpts from Seares: Not Alona? Then whom did Ecleo allegedly murder?, by Atty. Pachico A. Seares, http://www.sunstar.com.ph/cebu/, Thursday, September 2, 2010

Peras was the seventh judge to handle the high-profile case. Other judges inhibited themselves for various reasons, a sign of the kind of pressure brought in a criminal trial where Alona’s parents, a brother,a sister, neighbor and private prosecutor were killed by gunmen traced to the PBMA. http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/

it took 10 years and 7 judges for the courts.  the wheels of justice do grind slowly, but they grind exceedingly small.  may the dead rest in peace.

which, i believe, is how to live best.  spend only what is there (a little savings on the side is already an expense, on yourself), try one's best not to be in the red.  scrooge is of the past, when hunger was very real in england.

kun wa lang miy batang gamay pa, di sad ko mag-invest-invest unta.  mahadlok man god kog mahilangit na ko unya di na makaeskuwela among little girl kay way pang-tuition.  tan-awa, gitutyo pa gyod, hahay hinoon.

unsay bearing sa akong estorya sa thread?  well, land as an investment in this case is a sentimental investment on my part.  it is priceless, purer than the purest gold.  i won't sell, i won't gain anything, and it's fine by me.

but i believe it would be great to retire there, pohon malooy si lord god.  and it has fruit-bearing trees, mostly mangoes.  anybody here willing to make a go of those mangoes (spray, cover, harvest all the fruits), please pm me and educate me on how to go about making business out of mangoes.  so far, maayo ra ko mokaon ani, hahaha.

i made it clear to her that i didn't care about her dollars, i'm not selling even a square foot of my land because of its sentimental value, but i will open my lot for everyone, thus forcing her to open her lot as well aron di ma-dead end.  di gyod siya.  naa na kuno silay mga manok.  eh?  unsay akog naa na silay mga tigre.  di siya kaagi sa akong yuta kun di siya magpaagi sa iyaha, period.

di na nako i-estorya ang ending sa among sugilanon kay mabisto na ko.  makabasa pa lang nang paryenteha ani, maoy gidangat.  revival of hostilities unya, kapoy na.  all i can say is that the ending was a deus ex machina, in my favor.

anyways, the problem was they fenced their lot and their gate opens to my lot.  wisely, gipasirhan nako ang akong lote kay di man sila paagi sa ilaha (the whole stretch on the side of our two adjoining lots was once a passageway for everyone until iyang gisirhan ang ilaha kay di na siya paagi).  unsa god nang batasana god; di paagi, unya moagi sa uban?  eeekkk!

you are not alone, ms islander. mas grabe tong mga biktima sa pyramiding scam sa bohol sauna. and there was the legacy group of rural banks scandal, and of course, the infamous debacle of CAP.

you better buy gold or land. my sister bought a gold ring sauna P4K lang. karon pagprenda gidawat ug prenda nga P8K.

trusted insurance companies: Pro Life UK, Sun Life Canada, Axa...

thanks for the advice, tb.com.  true nang land and gold, pabor ko.  our ever-loyal household help gipalitan nako last 2010 christmas ug gold ring.  bilib ko.  by christmas 2011, gipa-assess niya, 15k na man.  prenda na nga assessment, meaning 30% ra sa total worth.  and i bought it for 5k+ a year before, during a sale.  whew!  hasta ako nahibung.  of course, jewelry has a downside.  it's a dead investment.  if push comes to shove, way makadalidali ug palit during emergencies unless ipabarato pag-ayo nato.  also, it is so kawatable.

pangutana:  unsa kahay sangpotan aning iyang xxx-rated nga sugilanon?

based on the receipts of my quarterly payments, i guess i would lose some 200k+ in prudentialife with my purchase of two plans, akong pension ug ang educational plan for our youngest.  the last news i read about this is that pension plan holders may end up getting 46k+ while educational plan holders may have 25k+.  daog-daog man gyod intawon ni uy.  way mga palabra de honor.

my bigger fear is that i lack 3 more quarterly payments (i would have completed all 5-year payments by september of this year but decided against paying more because that would be throwing good money after bad, right?).  you know how insurance and pre-need companies are, any minor kink is magnified.  prudentialife just might disqualify me for these minuscule returns by pointing out my incomplete payments.  i can fight my way hoarse and still end up a spent force judging from what happened to that other failed pre-need company here.

yet all i want is my money back (bisan di na lang ang tibuok nakong nabayad intawon) and i'm willing to wait until june for the final decision.  frankly, i'm not very positive.  mas sure pa tingali kun magpadala na lang kog paktol nila.

luckily, unlike other mothers here, wa ko makahilak.  di ko mohilak kun kuwarta na man lang.  mangaway lang ko.  pahilakon nako ang akong awayon, grrrrrr.

Help & Support / LORENZ, too busy with your papers?
April 14, 2012, 08:25:24 AM
it is strange that you haven't visited this site for 2 days(?)  real busy with your papers?  i'll help you in proofreading.  note that i said proofreading, not editing, but usually when i proofread i tend to copy edit too, but not really edit in the real sense of the word (as in asking the writer to change the whole format because something is askew somewhere, hehe).

i read somewhere here in tb that you needed one, but i thought then that you may have better help there.  anyways, in case you haven't found one, just give me 2 days for each paper (inclusive of my household chores and tb sorties).  that is, if you trust me and if there's no one else there to do it for you.

my brief biodata (budats, in case of doubt ba lang, hehe): 13 years as writer and editor of some agency or paper or other, 4 years part time teaching college humanities, literature, english composition and grammar, technical writing, and sociology, until the banana republic told me to stop and stay put, which turned out to be a much harder job.  i hold a master's degree in never mind.

KJ me found this in good ol' wiki:

Health benefits

Nutritionally, the fruit is high in carbohydrates, particularly fructose. The fruit also contains significant amounts of vitamin C, vitamin B1, and vitamin B2.  The fruit, seeds, and leaves have a number of herbal medicinal uses among indigenous peoples of regions where the plant is common.

There is evidence indicating that the fruit's extracts selectively inhibit the growth of human breast cancer cells by downregulating expression of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) in vitro and in a mouse model, but the effect has not been studied in humans.

Health risks

Research carried out in the Caribbean has suggested a connection between consumption of soursop and atypical forms of Parkinson's disease due to the very high concentration of annonacin.

According to Cancer Research UK, Annona muricata is an active principle in an unlicensed herbal remedy marketed under the brand name Triamazon.  Triamazon is not licensed for medicinal use and the sale of the product resulted in a conviction on four counts of selling unlicensed medical products, and other charges, for a vendor in the United Kingdom.
