TALIBAN militants launched a series of simultaneous attacks on government buildings and international agencies and embassies in Afghanistan yesterday in their biggest offensive this year.
The parliament, US, British, German and Russian embassies as well as NATO heaquarters and a hotel in Kabul were among the targets, the BBC reported. Militants said they had also targeted sites in Logar and Paktia provinces. There were also reports of suicide attacks in Jalalabad.
Armed militants seized a multi-storey building under construction in Kabul's diplomatic quarter, about a kilometre from the palace of President Hamid Karzai and the US embassy, Bloomberg reported. They exchanged gunfire with Afghan police and explosions were heard as the battle continued in the mid-afternoon. The attackers fired a rocket towards the headquarters of the US-led International Security Assistance Force, Tolo TV reported.
