my family would surely remember me as the one who requested my younger brother to behead the most expensive fighting cock of my other younger brother two decades ago. the reason? he threw the Bible.

based from the emails and messages i got from my students, they would always remember me as the very strict  but friendly, approachable, and jocose teacher.

Health and Food / Some tips on menopause
June 14, 2007, 09:24:36 PM

By REBecca  B. Singson, MD
Tuesday, June 12, 2007

Menopause is the absence of menses for at least six months or a Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) level of 35 IU/ml or above. The average age of menopause for Filipinos is 49, though perimenopause starts as early as 10 years before the actual menopause. Approaching this golden period, here are a dozen tips from a gynecologist’s point of view on how to maintain your health and sanity:

• Visit a gynecologist annually on your birthday. Get tested for CBC, urinalysis, blood chemistry panel 23, chest x-ray, treadmill test, transvaginal ultrasound, and Pap smear, if not hysterectomized; bilateral mammography and fecal occult blood for colon cancer screening.

• If you started sex by 18 years old and have had five sexual partners or have had any partner who was promiscuous, have an HPV (human papillomavirus) test aside from a Pap smear. The HPV test is far more accurate than a Pap Smear, which can miss cervical cancer  up to 50 percent of cases. This is a more direct test as it detects presence or absence of  virus that causes cervical cancer. If HPV test is negative, do a Pap Smear test once in three years. However, if  test is  positive, the risk of acquiring cervical cancer increases by a hundredfold.

• Have a bone densitometry once in three years to detect osteoporosis. Couple that with bone turnover markers such as a 2,3. Dpd-Pyrilinks or Urinary Collagen Ntx test. This is done by submitting your first or second urine in the morning  to detect how much bone is lost every day. Should you be given drugs for osteoporosis, these bone turnover tests will also be your basis to tell if the drug taken works or not within eight weeks from start of therapy.

• Go for hormone replacement therapy. If you are having hot flashes, mood swings, irritability, anxiety, depression, sleeplessness, fatigue, memory loss, low libido, and skin or vaginal dryness, you may need hormone replacement therapy (HRT).

• You may opt to take either synthetic or natural hormone replacement therapy. Some women are afraid to use HRT because of results of WHI trial showing increased risk for breast cancer, coronary heart disease (CHD), stroke, venous thromboembolism, and pulmonary embolism (you must realize that this study is extremely flawed). The average age of  women included in this study is 65 years old, at which period they are more prone to breast cancer and their arteries are riddled with arteriosclerosis, making them more prone to strokes and heart attacks. However, these results are not necessarily true for women who recently went into menopause.

The natural bioidentical hormones are plant-based which don’t necessarily carry the same risk. You can be as energetic and as vibrant as you were in your teens with hormone replacement therapy.

If you have osteopenia or osteoporosis, with all  symptoms stated in an aforementioned tip, your best bet for correction is hormone replacement therapy. However, if you just have osteopenia or osteoporosis without all the symptoms stated,  take an anti-bone resorption drug. For osteopenia, the only FDA-approved drug is Raloxifene. For osteoporosis, Raloxifene is the ideal drug for women  younger than 65 years old. If over 65 years old, you may use Fosamax daily, Fosavance once weekly, Actonel once weekly or Bonviva once monthly. These medicines must be prescribed by your doctor before taken.

The advantage of Raloxifene is that it decreases breast cancer risk by 44 percent, equivalent to the effect of Tamoxifen but at the same time may increase the risk of fatal strokes. It is, therefore, the drug recommended to women who need to be treated for osteoporosis with a family history of breast cancer or are strongly fearful of acquiring breast cancer.

• Be sure you are taking 1,500 mgs. of calcium every day. You normally obtain about 300-400 mgs. from your diet so a tablet of calcium twice a day should do the trick. Your calcium should have half the amount of magnesium as your calcium to make a 2:1 ratio as well as some vitamin D. Your calcium absorption depends on what it is chelated to. You absorb 20 percent calcium from calcium carbonate, a little more with calcium gluconate, and about 60 percent absorption with calcium citrate, so look for a calcium citrate supplement.

• Exercise. No matter how much calcium you ingest, if you don’t exercise against gravity, you can’t force your bones to deposit calcium. So, at least do brisk walking two to three times  your normal pace at a minimum of 40 minutes a day. Biking and swimming don’t count in helping your bones deposit calcium. Ballroom dancing and tai-chi help in balance training, such that if you drop, you can catch your fall and prevent a fracture.

• See a doctor. Remember, any vaginal bleeding after menopause is abnormal. So be sure to see a doctor to check out the cause of  the problem.

• Live life. Menopause is a liberating point in  life, free from pregnancy, and many times released from raising kids, who by now have grown independent. It is a period to fulfill yourself, reassess what you have accomplished. Deepen your relationship with God,  spouse and/or significant other. Have a great moment enriching your life!

Ruffa Gutierrez gets 3 cop bodyguards

Claims ‘threats’ from estranged husband

By Thea Alberto
INQUIRER.net
Last updated 03:23pm (Mla time) 06/14/2007

MANILA, Philippines -- Three “experienced” police security have been deployed to actress Ruffa Gutierrez and her two daughters, Lorin and Venice, because of what she described as "grave threats" from estranged husband Yilmaz Bektas, a police official said Thursday.

Chief Superintendent Romeo Hilomen, Police Security Protection Police director, said the actress’ mother, Annabel Rama, received the police escorts around 11 a.m., following a request to police Director General Oscar Calderon.

Gutierrez left Bektas in Istanbul last February but admitted their break up only recently.

After a series of public accusations between her and Bektas, Gutierrez claimed on national television that she was a battered wife and even experienced being electrocuted.

Bektas admitted hitting Gutierrez once, when he found out she had been previously married. Gutierrez however said Bektas knew of her first marriage prior to their lavish 2003 Manila wedding.

"We will be providing her three police security for her own protection as she cited getting grave threats from her husband Yilmaz Bektas, who carries a diplomatic passport," said Hilomen.

He said a threat assessment had been conduced prior to the deployment of the actress' security detail and that that Gutierrez's guards are 'experienced,' with more than 10 years’ service.

"If Bektas is indeed rich, he could hire anybody in the Philippines to do harm against Ruffa," said Hilomen.

Hilomen said Gutierrez can decide whether or not to retain the bodyguards round-the-clock.

However, he said if she sent the bodyguards home and anything happened to her or her children, the Philippine National Police (PNP) could not be held accountable.

"Once she sends home her police security, our responsibility ceases to exist," he said.

Hilomen said the threat assessment would continue and only when the threat subsides would the security detail would be pulled-out.

He added that the PNP will shoulder the salary of the police guards.

Reaching Out Through Faith
By Alfred Castro

One major trait that makes a Pinoy distinct from other citizens of the world is his faith in God. Indeed foreign nationals find us charming, attractive and likable. The truth is we are a people with faith and fear of God. And as much as possible, we practice what is ideal and pleasing to Him.

What really keeps the Filipino amiable is his positive outlook in the present life. He has great Hopes for a better life... in this life, and in his conceived life after death. Thus, his countenance conveys his belief.

Through my interactions with citizens living in highly industrialized nations, I realize many of them are wandering beings. They value more of what is physical, things that are short-lived and may perish. They have sole regard of surviving and living only at the moment, for death is the end of their existence.

When my sister, Christine Gelano was invited two years ago in Germany to discuss something about Existence, to mostly European professionals, she was simply amazed by their response.

The Germans and other European nationals enthusiastically applauded immediately at the end of her talk. They were absolutely awed and struck and touched. They have been searching for a more profound meaning to their existence.

If we keep on living our faith, we would grow, as a nation.

And though our faith may be put to the test, our trust and hope in God will never fail us.

Go Pinoys... Do live your life fully, knowing that God is with you all.

Actress Rica Peralejo goes back to school
By Isah V. Red

Believe it or not, Rica Peralejo is now an official freshman at Ateneo de Manila University.

"I am," she tells us. "I have long been wanting to go back to school, take up creative writing. I just didn't find the time."

Now 26, the star of the forthcoming horror flick Tiyanaks from Regal Entertainment finally decided she'd earn a degree before she turned 30.

And why creative writing?

"I have always wanted to write. Even when I was still a kid, I'd find myself writing short stories, essays, and poems," she says. "Now that I have the chance to develop that talent, I am pursuing it in a formal way."

Rica has yet to determine how many units she could squeeze into her very tight showbiz schedule. "I am crossing my fingers that the university allows me to take the minimum number of units," she gnarls. "What I need now is a miracle so I can cope with studies and my career."

Rica is a good example to many of her peers. There is nothing like having an education while sustaining a showbiz career. It's great to have a fallback position, because when showbiz projects dry up, you can still take up an employee position in a company courtesy of your diploma.

English or Engalog?
By Babe Romualdez

When English was abolished as a medium of instruction in schools ââ,¬â€œ a move made in 1987 shortly after EDSA I ââ,¬â€œ it only resulted in the birth of "Engalog" ââ,¬â€œ a mishmash of English and Tagalog words and phrases which did not succeed in making Filipinos truly bilingual. It was really a disastrous move to impose Tagalog-based Filipino as a medium of instruction even for subjects like math and science, because little did we know that we would be suffering its effects today with Filipinos slowly losing their competitive edge in getting good job opportunities particularly in technology-based industries. Filipinos are clearly losing out because of that very big mistake to abolish the use of English as a medium of instruction 20 years ago. Today, a lot of employers are complaining about the deteriorating quality of our graduates, and the fact that majority of them lack the required skill and facility in the English language.

Take the business process outsourcing (BPO) industry, for instance. Last year, around 200,000 were employed in BPO companies, mostly contact centers, which generated approximately $3.8 billion in revenues. This industry is acknowledged as one of the most dynamic of all sectors in the Information Technology (IT) industry, contributing to some 12 percent of the country's GDP. In the Philippines, the call center sector ââ,¬â€œ a subset of the BPO industry ââ,¬â€œ has the highest growth rate in Asia with some 105,000 call agent seats reported last year.

Government is positive that the Philippines will capture 50 percent of the total English-speaking market in 2008, and that some 900,000 Filipinos would be employed by 2010 in an industry projected to earn $11 billion in revenues. But this may be a tall order considering that the Philippines is showing a sharp decline in its attractiveness as a location for offshore services. This country currently ranks third behind India and China and just slightly ahead of Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore. But while the Philippines is said to be the biggest rival of India in the BPO industry, it has dropped from 4th to 8th place out of 50 countries that are considered attractive locations for off shore services. This slide in attractiveness is blamed mostly on the fact that the college graduates who apply for jobs in call centers fare poorly in the qualifying exams ââ,¬â€œ meaning they lack sufficient comprehension skills and they do not have the high level of conversational fluency required for the job. Of the approximately 400,000 fresh graduates churned out by colleges and universities, less than three percent are hired in BPO companies and call centers.

Purists and nationalists may disagree, but whether we like it or not, English is still considered the lingua franca of business and finance. It is estimated that 400 million people speak English as the primary language, while another 300-500 million are adept at it and use it as a second language, with still 750 million more using it as a foreign language. Many Asian countries are obviously beginning to recognize the advantage of being fluent in the English language. In South Korea, its oldest and most prestigious private university, Yonsei, has began to offer a four-year program for English-language classes, in part to keep their best and brightest from going abroad to study. Korea University previously offered less than 10 percent of classes in English. Today, it has increased to 35 percent and is expected to go up by as much as 60 percent. In Japan, Waseda University has been running a successful English college program since 2004 even while it focuses heavily on Asian culture, politics, history and other liberal arts. Beijing University and other top schools in China have likewise followed suit, increasing their English-language class offerings.

There is a big opportunity for the Philippines to eclipse India and China as the most attractive location for offshore services ââ,¬â€œ but our students' English proficiency has to improve ââ,¬â€œ and we're not only talking of the collegiate level here. Facility and proficiency in English has to start even during the elementary and high school levels. Fortunately, there are a number of initiatives by business groups for the promotion of English, like the Promoting English Proficiency (PEP) project of the American Chamber of Commerce. According to PEP co-chair John Forbes, there is a gap of hundreds of thousands of jobs that are not being filled in the Philippines because of poor English and other skills. This is what PEP is trying to address through its information and advocacy campaign, and through partnerships with educational institutions for the establishment of computerized English language centers, and encouraging employers to adopt higher standards of certification for hiring or advancing employees, like the Test of English for International Communication or TOEIC.

Surveys showed that Filipinos are showing a marked decline in their proficiency and comprehension in all aspects of the English language ââ,¬â€œ whether spoken, written or read. Just listen to the complaints of businessmen ââ,¬â€œ or worse, just try listening to new graduates struggle in expressing themselves during interviews ââ,¬â€œ and you will understand why the situation has become disturbing if not downright disappointing.
