'Piling on pressure'

Beyond the challenge of finding a technique that is minimally invasive and which would allow the female "chicks to hatch and be in good health", another important factor is that the method has to have the potential to be automated, said Preusse.

The plan is to have a machine bore a hole in the egg, while another machine identifies the gender, fixes up the female eggs and removes the male ones.

A start-up in Dresden is currently working on developing the machines, which could one day be used by poultry farmers.
#3405
In a process that should ultimately take just a few minutes, an egg containing a male chick is discarded pre-birth, while one containing a female chick is fixed up with a plaster and then returned to the incubator.

A few days later, a chick that will one day be a laying hen hatches.

Steiner believes that some use will eventually be found for the unwanted male embryosâ€"be it as fish feed or even in shampoo.

An egg is placed on a Spectrometer at a lab at the Carl Gustav Carus Faculty of Medicine of the Dresden Institute of Technology
#3406
"To the naked eye, we can't see the difference (between male and female embryos) but the computer can, if it's programmed to do so," said Steiner.

His team has been fine-tuning the programme over the past few years, and they now have it down to an identification accuracy rate of 95 percent.

Scientists use a spectroscopic method, based on the analysis of scattered light on blood vessels, to determine the sex of chick embryos in the egg

Using a laser beam, the scientists trace a small circle at the top of an egg, which makes a little hole in the shell. Through this they can see veins in the yolk, as well as detect the flutter of a tiny beating heart.

The egg is then placed in a large black boxâ€"the spectrometerâ€"and quickly, the biochemical properties of the embryo's blood are displayed on a screen.

'95% accuracy'

Several teams of scientistsâ€"including veterinarians, chemists, engineers and physicistsâ€"are collaborating on the project, which also includes the participation of two private companies.

Scientists use a spectroscopic method, based on the analysis of scattered light on blood vessels, to determine the sex of chick embryos in the egg

In the laboratory, Galli and her colleague Grit Preusse take eggs out of the refrigerator to demonstrate their technique.

The eggs have already been incubated for three days and blood vessels had by now formed.

"But not the nerve cells, so they can't feel pain," Steiner explained.

The team believes that from an ethical point of view, it is preferable to decide the chick's fate before, rather than after, it hatches.
#3409
The young hatchlings are usually condemned to a violent end simply because they are male, as roosters are deemed largely useless in the world of livestock farming.

Not only are they unable to lay eggs, their meat is not particularly popular.

Male chicks are therefore systematically eradicated. In many cases, they are mechanically shredded or crushed to death and used as animal feed.

At Dresden's University Clinic, analytical chemist Gerald Steiner and his team are working to prevent such mass culls of newborns by detecting the sex of chicks before they hatch.

Steiner uses a spectroscopic method, based on the analysis of scattered light on blood vessels, to determine the sex of chick embryos in the egg.

Spectroscopy is already used in cancer treatment as it helps to differentiate between abnormal and healthy cells.

"If we are able to identify a tumour, then why not the sex?" said Roberta Galli, a physicist.

How To Tips / Re: How to beat your wife
May 15, 2016, 01:11:19 PM
Before beating one's wife, Mr Al-Saqaby suggests a husband reminds her of "your rights and of her duties, according to Allah".

He then recommends the husband ignores his wife in bed, by turning his back on her or if he or she sleeps on the floor.

But he suggests the husband does not go to another house, as the point "is to discipline the wife, and not to air your dirty laundry in public".

Giving the main reasons a man may beat his wife, he says the first is arguments between the wife and her husband.

"Unfortunately, some wives want to live a life of equality with their husband," he says. "This is a very grave problem."

Other women make mistakes which may lead their husbands to beat them, he adds.

Mr Al-Saqaby suggests there are some situations where a wife may hit her husband, because of his "faulty upbringing" in which he may have seen his father hit his wife and be "imitating their behaviour".

He also says he is "sad to say" some women provoke their husbands to beat them.

The family therapist suggests the beating should not be performed with a rod or sharp object, but instead with a tooth-cleaning twig or handkerchief.

He says: "The beating should not be performed with a rod... nor should it be a headband... or a sharp object, which, I am sad to say, some husbands use.

"It should be done with something like the sewak tooth-cleaning twig - or with a handkerchief."

He explains: "Because the goal is merely to make the wife feel that she was wrong in the way she treated her husband."

In the tutorial, Khaled Al-Saqaby says he is "aware that this issue is a thorny one, which contains many hazards".

He adds: "But Allah willing, we will cross this bridge safely."

The footage was shot earlier this year then translated and released last month by the Washington DC-based Middle East Media Research Institute.

Scooter, briefly the world's oldest living cat, dead at 30
May 14, 2016

This undated image provided by the Guinness World Records shows Scooter owned by Gail Floyd. The Siamese cat born during the Reagan administration has been named by Guinness World Records as the world’s oldest. Guinness said Scooter celebrated his 30th birthday on March 26, 2016. (Gail Floyd/Guinness World Records via AP)

MANSFIELD, Texas (AP) â€" A Siamese cat recently cited by the Guinness Book of World Records as the world's oldest living cat did not live to enjoy the title.

Scooter marked his 30th birthday on March 26. However, owner Gail Floyd of Mansfield, Texas, told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram that Scooter had died by the time Guinness conferred its title on April 8.

Dr. Tricia Latimer, a Mansfield veterinarian, says Scooter had lived to the equivalent of about 136 human years.

Scooter wasn't Guinness' oldest cat of all time, though. That mark belongs to a fellow Texas cat who lived to be 38. -- https://www.yahoo.com/

The other reason to be wary of Facebook’s bias has to do with sheer size. Ms. Caplan notes that when studying bias in traditional media, scholars try to make comparisons across different news outlets. To determine if The Times is ignoring a certain story unfairly, look at competitors like The Washington Post and The Wall Street Journal. If those outlets are covering a story and The Times isn’t, there could be something amiss about The Times’s news judgment.

Such comparative studies are nearly impossible for Facebook. Facebook is personalized, in that what you see on your News Feed is different from what I see on mine, so the only entity in a position to look for systemic bias across all of Facebook is Facebook itself. Even if you could determine the spread of stories across all of Facebook’s readers, what would you compare it to?

“Facebook has achieved saturation,” Ms. Caplan said. No other social network is as large, popular, or used in the same way, so there’s really no good rival for comparing Facebook’s algorithmic output in order to look for bias.

What we’re left with is a very powerful black box. In a 2010 study, Facebook’s data scientists proved that simply by showing some users that their friends had voted, Facebook could encourage people to go to the polls. That study was randomized â€" Facebook wasn’t selectively showing messages to supporters of a particular candidate.

But could it? Sure. And if it happens, you might never know. -- http://www.nytimes.com/
#3427
You could argue that none of this is unusual. Many large media outlets are powerful, somewhat opaque, operated for profit, and controlled by wealthy people who aren’t shy about their policy agendas â€" Bloomberg News, The Washington Post, Fox News and The New York Times, to name a few.

But there are some reasons to be even more wary of Facebook’s bias. One is institutional. Many mainstream outlets have a rigorous set of rules and norms about what’s acceptable and what’s not in the news business.

“The New York Times contains within it a long history of ethics and the role that media is supposed to be playing in democracies and the public,” Ms. Caplan said. “These technology companies have not been engaged in that conversation.”

According to a statement from Tom Stocky, who is in charge of the trending topics list, Facebook has policies “for the review team to ensure consistency and neutrality” of the items that appear in the trending list.

But Facebook declined to discuss whether any editorial guidelines governed its algorithms, including the system that determines what people see in News Feed. Those algorithms could have profound implications for society. For instance, one persistent worry about algorithmic-selected news is that it might reinforce people’s previously held points of view. If News Feed shows news that we’re each likely to Like, it could trap us into echo chambers and contribute to rising political polarization. In a study last year, Facebook’s scientists asserted the echo chamber effect was muted.

But when Facebook changes its algorithm â€" which it does routinely â€" does it have guidelines to make sure the changes aren’t furthering an echo chamber? Or that the changes aren’t inadvertently favoring one candidate or ideology over another? In other words, are Facebook’s engineering decisions subject to ethical review? Nobody knows.
#3428
That myth should die. It’s true that beyond the Trending box, most of the stories Facebook presents to you are selected by its algorithms, but those algorithms are as infused with bias as any other human editorial decision.

“Algorithms equal editors,” said Robyn Caplan, a research analyst at Data & Society, a research group that studies digital communications systems. “With Facebook, humans are never not involved. Humans are in every step of the process â€" in terms of what we’re clicking on, who’s shifting the algorithms behind the scenes, what kind of user testing is being done, and the initial training data provided by humans.”

Everything you see on Facebook is therefore the product of these people’s expertise and considered judgment, as well as their conscious and unconscious biases apart from possible malfeasance or potential corruption. It’s often hard to know which, because Facebook’s editorial sensibilities are secret. So are its personalities: Most of the engineers, designers and others who decide what people see on Facebook will remain forever unknown to its audience.

Facebook also has an unmistakable corporate ethos and point of view. The company is staffed mostly by wealthy coastal Americans who tend to support Democrats, and it is wholly controlled by a young billionaire who has expressed policy preferences that many people find objectionable. Mr. Zuckerberg is for free trade, more open immigration and for a certain controversial brand of education reform. Instead of “building walls,” he supports a “connected world and a global community.”
#3429
None of that is true. This week, Facebook rushed to deny a report in Gizmodo that said the team in charge of its “trending” news list routinely suppressed conservative points of view. Last month, Gizmodo also reported that Facebook employees asked Mark Zuckerberg, the social network’s chief executive, if the company had a responsibility to “help prevent President Trump in 2017.” Facebook denied it would ever try to manipulate elections.

Even if you believe that Facebook isn’t monkeying with the trending list or actively trying to swing the vote, the reports serve as timely reminders of the ever-increasing potential dangers of Facebook’s hold on the news. That drew the attention of Senator John Thune, the Republican of South Dakota who heads the Senate’s Commerce Committee, who sent a letter on Tuesday asking Mr. Zuckerberg to explain how Facebook polices bias.

The question isn’t whether Facebook has outsize power to shape the world â€" of course it does, and of course you should worry about that power. If it wanted to, Facebook could try to sway elections, favor certain policies, or just make you feel a certain way about the world, as it once proved it could do in an experiment devised to measure how emotions spread online.

There is no evidence Facebook is doing anything so alarming now. The danger is nevertheless real. The biggest worry is that Facebook doesn’t seem to recognize its own power, and doesn’t think of itself as a news organization with a well-developed sense of institutional ethics and responsibility, or even a potential for bias. Neither does its audience, which might believe that Facebook is immune to bias because it is run by computers.

Facebook’s Bias Is Built-In, and Bears Watching
Farhad Manjoo
STATE OF THE ART
MAY 11, 2016

Facebook is the world’s most influential source of news.

That’s true according to every available measure of size â€" the billion-plus people who devour its News Feed every day, the cargo ships of profit it keeps raking in, and the tsunami of online traffic it sends to other news sites.

But Facebook has also acquired a more subtle power to shape the wider news business. Across the industry, reporters, editors and media executives now look to Facebook the same way nesting baby chicks look to their engorged mother â€" as the source of all knowledge and nourishment, the model for how to behave in this scary new-media world. Case in point: The New York Times, among others, recently began an initiative to broadcast live video. Why do you suppose that might be? Yup, the F word. The deal includes payments from Facebook to news outlets, including The Times.

Yet few Americans think of Facebook as a powerful media organization, one that can alter events in the real world. When blowhards rant about the mainstream media, they do not usually mean Facebook, the mainstreamiest of all social networks. That’s because Facebook operates under a veneer of empiricism. Many people believe that what you see on Facebook represents some kind of data-mined objective truth unmolested by the subjective attitudes of fair-and-balanced human beings.

The dwarf planet could have easily continued to evade astronomers examination if the Konkoly researchers hadn’t thought to pair NASA Kepler data with ESA Herschel data. By combining information about the amount of light the planet was reflecting from Kepler with information about its heat radiation from Herschel, researchers were finally able to calculate an accurate size measurement. The finding also suggests an avenue for learning much more about all those little (or perhaps not-so-little) new planetary discoveries that are popping up all the time now.

For 2007 OR10, these results mean both that we’re finally aware of the existence of one of the largest dwarf planets nearby and that we know more about what that planet is like. With the new size measurements confirmed, the Palomar Observatory astronomers who discovered the planet back in 2007 have also already begun contemplating possible names. From there, the dwarf planet will begin the process of being recognized by the International Astronomical Union, which could take a while to finally wrap up. Still, it means that 2007 OR10 won’t be keeping that designation for long.
#3435
Researchers have known a planet was out there since 2007, but they vastly underestimated just how big it is. The reason its tremendous size wasn’t determined until recently lies in both the planet’s dark surface and its strange orbit. The surface of the planet is an incredibly dark red, perhaps due to a ever-changing covering of methane ice. That lack of reflective light made it hard for Kepler to even spot the planet, much less know its true size. The planet also has an incredibly slow rotation time that gives it a 45 hour day, one of the solar system’s longest. That slow rotation, plus a long, elliptical orbit, made it hard to spot the planet for longâ€"although Kepler managed to catch brief glimpse in 2014, as you see here:

In a universe full of planets, 2007 OR10 is something special. It’s big, just slightly smaller than the size of Pluto. And it’s close, within our very own solar system. So how did it still manage to take astronomers by surprise?

Researchers from Konkoly Observatory just revealed in the Astronomical Journal that they had uncovered new details about planet 2007 OR10 that show it to be the third largest dwarf planet ever seen in our solar system. New planets are uncovered all the time, thanks to Kepler. In fact, the mission just unearthed a stash of more than 1,200 new exoplanets, bringing its total haul to over 3,200. 2007 OR10 has a diameter of 955 miles, which makes it a relative monster. The only larger dwarf planets in our solar system are Pluto, which has a diameter of 1475 miles, and Eris, which has a diameter of 1445 miles. 2007 OR10 is the third biggest dwarf planet in our solar systemâ€"and the largest unnamed planet of any kind within our solar system.

Conditional pardon

In April 1998, he was granted conditional pardon by then President Fidel V. Ramos, for whom he campaigned in 1992.

Jurado said Padilla wanted to clear his name because it affected his product endorsements.

In a three-page complaint, Padilla cried foul over the user’s post that read: “This is a clear violation of election law. Throw him in jail!”

“Post/tweet was clearly made without proper research and for the sole purpose of defaming our client supposedly because he supported a candidate which Miss Krizzy (@krizzy_kalerqui) does not support,” Jurado said in the complaint.

NBI-CCD chief Roland Aguto said the agency accepted the case and would wait for Padilla’s sworn statement. He said the first step of their investigation would be to establish the user’s real identity. With a report from Inquirer Archives

No right to vote

“She asked me, ‘Why can’t you vote?’ I told her, ‘Because I’m an ex-convict. I was granted pardon but that did not reinstate my right to vote,’” he said.

Padilla was meted out a 21-year jail term by the Angeles City Regional Trial Court for illegal possession of firearms in April 1994. His conviction was upheld by the Court of Appeals in July 1995. He started serving his sentence two months later.

In 1997, the Supreme Court affirmed his conviction but cut his jail term to 10-18 years.

Padilla’s conviction stemmed from a hit-and-run accident in Barangay Sta. Teresita, Angeles City, on Oct. 26, 1992. The actor, who was driving a Pajero van, sideswiped a balut vendor.

He fled the scene but was intercepted by policemen along  Abacan River. A .357-cal. revolver, an M-16 assault rifle and a .380-cal. Beretta pistol as well as ammunitionâ€"all unlicensedâ€"were later found in his vehicle.

Padilla benefited from the retroactive provision of Republic Act. No. 8294, a law which reduced the jail term for illegal possession of firearms, ammunition and explosives from six to 12 years.

He just about had it with social media bashers.

On Thursday, actor Robin Padilla filed online libel charges at the National Bureau of Investigation against a Twitter user identified only as “Krizzy,” who goes by the username @krizzy_kalerqui.

Padilla, accompanied by lawyer Philip Jurado, filed the case at the NBI-Cybercrime Division (NBI-CCD).

Krizzy, who accused Padilla of election violation for posting a shaded ballot on his Instagram account, pushed the actor to tell his daughter Kylie that he is an ex-convict.

“That’s very painful to me. You see, I even sent my kids to Australia just to erase that ex-convict tag but now it’s coming out again,” Padilla said.

Padilla, a staunch supporter of Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, said he posted a picture of his “ballot” on Instagram only to express his desire to vote.

He said the government removed his voting rights for life after he was convicted for illegal possession of firearms in 1995.

Padilla said he initially ignored online bashers until the spread of misinformation was already beyond control.

He said Kylie even called him to ask, “Are you going to jail for this?” He was referring to the picture of what appeared to be his shaded ballot.

Padilla said he was forced to explain to Kylie that he did not commit any violation because he could not vote.

The United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) was unfazed by the initial strong showing of Davao Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, saying it will wait for the result of elections in areas where Vice President Jejomar Binay is strong.

UNA campaign spokesman Rico Quicho said they will have a better picture of the poll outcome on Tuesday.

“We’re still waiting for results…and based on our own calculations, once that gets in then we will be have a better position but as of now it is still early, we have to wait for results coming from our bailiwicks,” Quicho said.

“Tomorrow we will know, at least we will have a better picture of what will happen or what will be the results and until then, with guided optimism, we know that our volunteers work round the clock, they went house to house to urge each and every one to vote for vice President Jejomar Binay. We honor them, we thank them. And tomorrow we will have a better and clearer picture of the results,” he added.

Quicho said that it is difficult to play with numbers.

“It is as it is. So just like you, we wait with bated breath the coming of the results. But we feel that at this point, it is still too early for us to say so let us wait until tomorrow,” he said.

But UNA communications director Joey Salgado expressed confidence that Binay will win despite the reported wide lead of Duterte.

MAR ROXAS

A U.S.-educated investment banker and the richest Philippine presidential aspirant, Mar Roxas, 58, is banking on his clean image in a country where two presidents have been forced out and a third remains in detention on alleged corruption.

President Benigno Aquino III has endorsed the candidacy of Roxas, who in turn vows to continue his "straight path" style of leadership and support most of his policies, including allowing U.S. forces access to local military camps amid the sea feud with China. Roxas, however, doesn't favor the Philippines joining the U.S.-led Trans Pacific Partnership, fearing it will adversely impact local agriculture.

GRACE POE

A political neophyte, Sen. Grace Poe, 47, banks on the celebrity name she inherited from her movie parents, who adopted her after she was found abandoned as a newborn in a church. Her being a foundling and a naturalized American citizen once sparked attempts to nullify her candidacy in legal challenges that she hurdled.

The former preschool teacher backs Aquino's policy on the sea rifts and an arbitration complaint against China, although she says she'll try to engage Beijing constructively. If she wins, Poe says she'll hold talks with communist rebels.

RODRIGO DUTERTE

Despite his threats to kill criminals, obscene remarks and cursing of Pope Francis, Davao city Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, 71, has topped the pre-election polls. His pledge to end crime nationwide in three to six months has resonated among crime-weary Filipinos, but has been dismissed by police as undoable. The president has campaigned against Duterte after the latter threatened to close Congress in case he wins and faces impeachment.

Duterte is open to talks with China on the sea feud and describes himself as a socialist wary of the U.S.-Philippine security alliance. Communist rebels, he says, can play a role in his government if he wins.

MIRIAM DEFENSOR-SANTIAGO

A former trial court judge and immigration commissioner, Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago was diagnosed with stage-4 lung cancer in 2014 but proceeded to run for president after saying she has recovered. Unable to campaign fully due to her health condition, the 70-year-old Santiago has trailed in pre-election polls.

She was elected to serve as an International Criminal Court judge but passed the chance due to illness. The tough-talking senator says the Philippines should not be fully dependent on the U.S. militarily and backs a strengthening of the local military amid the sea dispute with Beijing.

JEJOMAR BINAY

Elected vice president in 2010, Jejomar Binay was a human rights lawyer who helped fight dictator Ferdinand Marcos before serving as a longtime mayor of Manila's financial district. Many regarded him as a strong contender for the presidency, but corruption allegations, which he denies, sullied his image. The 73-year-old may be charged with corruption when his vice presidential term ends.

Binay backs talks with China on territorial rifts and a stronger U.S. military presence. He regards peace talks as the best way to end decades of Muslim and communist insurgencies.

In this Easter season during the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy, let us then take a pause, reflect, pray and ask ourselves:

Am I strengthened and moved by Christ’s paschal mystery that I believe in Him?

How do I proclaim the Risen Christ in my family and community?

As a witness of Christ’s saving acts, do I preach God’s love with joy?

As Communicator of the Gospel, how do I concretize my witnessing in my family, in my workplace and in communities where I belong?

Prayer:
Almighty and Loving God, thank you for blessing us with your grace of love and mercy.  As you ascended to heaven, you have made us stronger in our faith and resolved with the assurance of the Advocate.  You actually have not left us alone, but the Advocate is coming as sent by the Father in your name.  We are filled with joy as you returned to the Father and now sits at his right side.  May the teachings and examples of Jesus your Son be our inspiration and guide as we work for the fulfillment of the mission which Christ had entrusted to his disciples and to us. This we ask through Christ our Lord, who lives and reign with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.

Intentions: Let us pray for all Social Communicatorsâ€"the journalists, writers, reporters editors, readers, reviewers, publishers, and all media practitioners and media educators; may the Lord keep them safe and protect them as they perform their task and duty to tell and defend the “Truth.”  May they become committed and responsible in the conduct of their tasks, be it in mainstream or alternative media.

We pray to all the mothers of the world, may the Lord bless them with the grace of good health, joy and the grace of age. Happy Mothers’ Day to all the mothers!

We also pray for the successful and peaceful national elections in the Philippines on May 9, 2016.  May all Filipinos be responsible in the exercise of their rightful duty to suffrage and to vote maturely, responsibly, and honestly.

In our gospel reading, our Lord Jesus knew very well that his last days with his disciples is about to end. That was why he kept on reminding them so they will remember what he has been telling them.  All his teachings should be kept in mind, as all prophesies from the scriptures were made fulfilled and were made refreshed to them. What is written about the messiah has to be accepted and remembered by his disciples.

“You are witnesses of these things” Jesus said to his disciples and as witnesses today, it is your duty to testify and proclaim God’s greatness at all times. The Lord Jesus had blessed his disciples before he ascended and returned to his Father in heaven. Jesus’ disciple had witnessed the glory of God and returned to Jerusalem in joyous mood and continued praising the Lord on their way to the temple.

As Christians, how do we express our witnessing today? If you are a Christian parent, how do you live out the values of the kingdom in building up your family and your relationship with the others in your community and workplace?  Will you be understanding and forgiving if your children or other people hurt you, or had taken advantage of you? Do you give a blessing or a curse to people who offended you or abused you?

As a son or daughter, how is the love of God being manifested when sometimes you don’t understand and accept the opinion and decision of your parents and other people?  Do you love your parent dearly, especially all the mothers are honored today as we celebrate Mothers’ Day? Authentic Christian witnessing is manifested truly from the heart so others may see it and feel it.  Christian witnessing should be felt by those we encounter in our daily lives.  We are about to choose or national and local leaders in the coming national Elections, do we choose the right candidate who give witness to the values of the Kingdom?

In the Church calendar, Ascencion Sunday is also celebrated by the Catholic Church as World Communication Day. As witnesses therefore of the Risen Christ, we should therefore proclaim the truth that the Son of God suffered, died and rose from the dead on the third day. Every Christian witness is Christian communication, and we are called to be Communicators of the Gospel. How then shall we give witness in the field of Social Communication.

REFLECTION | Jesus ascended to heaven: ‘You are witnesses of these things’
By Rev. Fr. Christian B. Buenafe, O. Carm.
Sunday, May 8, 2016 · 9:23 am

In today’s gospel, Jesus inspired the faithful to be witnesses of God’s love by practicing his teachings.

“So it was written: the Messiah had to suffer, and on the third day rise from the dead. Then repentance and forgiveness in his name would be proclaimed to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. And you are witnesses of these things. And that is why I will send you what my Father promised. So remain in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.”

Jesus led them almost as far as Bethany; then he lifted up his hands and blesses them. And as he blessed them, he withdraws, and was taken to heaven. They worshiped him, and then returned to Jerusalem full of joy; and they were continually in the temple, praising God.”
â€"Luke 24:46-53

We are witnesses of God’s love and mercy. We are witnesses of God’s enduring love even if how many times we had disobeyed him. In Jesus’ paschal mystery, we share in his dying so we rise with him and live in him alone. As Jesus ascended to heaven, his teachings should be preached and his deeds be done in his name. Today, we shall celebrate and enjoy the Easter blessings when we heartily follow his words and commands.

REFLECTIONS ON SUNDAY’S READINGS: MAY 8, 2016

Today is the Solemnity of the Ascension. The ascension of Jesus prepares the way for the powerful and enduring presence of the Holy Spirit in the disciples who continue his ministry and witness to his risen presence. The spirituality of Christ is connected to the world around us â€" the world of people and nature â€" a world with rich and poor, men and women, young and old, nature and grace, conflict and reconciliation, war and peace, sin and virtue, etc. The disciples are blessed and “clothed with power from on high” to be his presence and do his ministry in the midst of everything that is part of life. Now we are the ones in whom the Holy Spirit dwells, called to be the living presence of the risen Christ in our world. How have you been surprised by the presence of God in daily life? How can you bring the presence of God into difficult situations?

“The life of the spirit is not dissociated from the body or from nature or from worldly realities, but lived in and with them, in communion with all that surrounds us. …what all need is an “ecological conversion”, whereby the effects of their encounter with Jesus Christ become evident in their relationship with the world around them. Living our vocation to be protectors of God’s handiwork is essential to a life of virtue; it is not an optional or a secondary aspect of our Christian experience.” (#216, 217 Laudato Si)

Are Stocks 80% Overvalued? New Evidence Shocks Wall Street
BY JL YASTINE April 25, 2016

Several noted economists and distinguished investors are warning of a 50% stock market crash.

Billionaire Carl Icahn, for example, recently threw up a red flag on national broadcast when he declared, “The public is walking into a trap again as they did in 2007.”

Unfortunately, Icahn’s warning is tame compared to his peers.

“U.S. stocks are now about 80% overvalued,” says Andrew Smithers, the chairman of Smithers & Co. He backs up his prediction using a ratio which proves that the only time in history stocks were this risky was 1929 and 1999. And we all know what happened next. Stocks fell by 89% and 50%, respectively.

This simple sandcastle analogy proves an economic collapse is imminent. Click here to see how...

Even the Royal Bank of Scotland says the markets are flashing stress alerts akin to the 2008 crisis. They told their clients to “Sell Everything” because “in a crowded hall, the exit doors are small.”

Stocks like Apple, will plunge.

But there is one distinct warning that should send chills down your spine … that of James Dale Davidson.

As a renowned economist, best-selling author, and founder of Strategic Investment, Davidson makes the strongest case for a looming crisis â€" “Right now, there are three key economic indicators screaming SELL. They don’t imply that a 50% collapse is looming, it’s already at our doorstep.”

Editor’s Note: Click Here to See the 3 Indicators That Prove a 50% Stock Market Collapse is Looming.

Davidson’s warning is the most alarming of all his peers.

Not just because he makes the strongest case for a collapse (he uses over 20 unquestionable charts to prove his point), but also because Davidson has a remarkable track record of calling every major economic shift over the last three decades. For example, Davidson predicted the collapse of 1999 and 2007, along with the fall of the Soviet Union and Japan’s economic downfall, to name just a few.

His predictions are so accurate, he’s been invited to shake hands and counsel the likes of former presidents Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton â€" and he’s had the good fortune to befriend and convene with George Bush Sr., Steve Forbes, Donald Trump, Margaret Thatcher, Sir Roger Douglas and even Boris Yeltsin.

Hence, if Davidson calls for a 50% market correction, one should pay heed.

MANILA, Philippines â€" State weather forecasters observed a record-breaking heat index in Pangasinan after the actual apparent temperature reached an “extremely dangerous” 55.8 degrees Celsius on Friday afternoon.

The actual maximum heat index recorded in Dagupan City at 2 p.m. on Friday surpassed the previous record set in Cabanatuan City, Nueva Ecija at 52.3 degrees Celsius last month.

According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), the highest heat index in Cabanatuan City on Friday also broke the previous record and reached 52.6 degrees Celsius.

The heat index, or human discomfort index, gives the apparent temperature, or what humans perceive or feel as the temperature affecting their body. It is based on the actual temperature and relative humidity.

“High air temperatures and high relative humidity will give high apparent temperatures or indices. Full exposure to sunshine can increase the heat index by nine degrees,” PAGASA said.

It said a heat index over 54 degrees Celsius is considered extremely dangerous and could cause heat stroke.

Headlines ( Article MRec ), pagematch: 1, sectionmatch: 1
A heat index between 41 to 54 degrees is considered dangerous and likely to cause cramps, exhaustion and even heat stroke after continuous activity.

State weather forecasters advised the public to stay indoors as direct exposure to the sun could significantly increase the heat index.

They also advised the public to wear lightweight and light-colored clothes, as light colors will reflect the sun’s heat.

“Drink plenty of water regularly. The body needs water to keep cool. Water is the safest liquid to drink during heat emergencies. Avoid drinking liquor because it dehydrates the body,” PAGASA said.

“Eat small meals; however, eat more often. Avoid eating foods that are high in protein which can increase metabolic heat,” it added.

WE BELIEVE that clouds are unjustly maligned and that life would be immeasurably poorer without them.

We think that they are Nature’s poetry, and the most egalitarian of her displays, since everyone can have a fantastic view of them.

We pledge to fight ‘blue-sky thinking’ wherever we find it. Life would be dull if we had to look up at cloudless monotony day after day.

We seek to remind people that clouds are expressions of the atmosphere’s moods, and can be read like those of a person’s countenance.

We believe that clouds are for dreamers and their contemplation benefits the soul. Indeed, all who consider the shapes they see in them will save money on psychoanalysis bills.

And so we say to all who’ll listen:

Look up, marvel at the ephemeral beauty, and always remember to live life with your head in the clouds!
