1 Samuel 20 :32-42 Lesson #9 June 3, 1979

We are looking at the contrast of the relationship between Jonathan and David and the relationship between Saul and David; Jonathan, a man after the Spirit; Saul, a man after the flesh. Last week we finished in I Samuel chapter 20, roughly about verse 32. We saw Saul run the gamut downward that you see in Romans 1:18-32. He began with a suspicion and fear of David, the "impulsive" stage. Then, as he began to make bad choices, he developed a dread of David and entered the "compulsive" stage where he was no longer in the saddle. Finally, with more bad choices, he reached what I call the "consumed" stage. He knew God had appointed David to be King and David's line to become the reigning line of Israel, but Saul did not care. He could not care. He was literally driven to oppose God and became David's enemy "continually." He had reached the stage expressed in verse 32, of Chapter 1 of Romans, "although they know the ordinance of God, that those who practice such things are worthy of death, they not only do the same, but also give hearty approval to those who practice them." They become perniciously evil. The tragedy of Saul was that of a godly man gone wrong. He would go to be with the Lord when he died, but all the way to his death he fought God and ultimately God had him killed.

On the other hand we have seen Jonathan's handling of the same situation, the contrasting side of the "snowball rolling down the hill." Saul's loss of his kingdom and his line was also a loss for Jonathan, the crown prince. But even though he and his family would not reign in Israel, Jonathan fell in love with his rival David. Their souls were knit together. David was rejected by Saul but accepted by Jonathan, and rather than fear David or have suspicions about him, Jonathan loved him with very godly emotions. He took off his own armor, his own cloak and his own weapons and garbed his rival as a prince of Israel. He was willing to accept God's ruling. He took his rival David and made him a prince.

Next step was a righteous choice to intercede for David with Saul on a very open, honest, godly basis, and it turned Saul around. True, only temporarily, but it did turn Saul around so that Saul and Jonathan and David were all at peace with one another.

Then Jonathan made another choice. The intent was godly, but the method was not. David, with his terror of Saul and his eyes off of YHWH, cast himself on the mercy of Jonathan. The tyranny of the urgent caused Jonathan's emotions to be swayed, and he made a godly choice to preserve David's life. The problem was he used very ungodly methodology. He went along with David's deceit of his father, and he practiced a little deceit of his own. The result was disaster. Your desire does not sanctify your methodology. You may have the world's greatest desires, but if they are not founded on Scripture, you are in trouble. Because of his choices, that is where we find Jonathan now.

Picking up from last week, Saul has seen right through Jonathan's deception and also through David's deception. He has literally called Jonathan a bastard in front of the whole court. He has greatly insulted him and caused him to "lose face," a grievous humiliation in an Oriental culture. You would think that would generate a deep resentment in Jonathan, but it does not. Jonathan is a very godly man, and he loves his father. He loves him no matter what he is or what he does. He accepts him and loves him as he is. We will see shortly that this has a tremendous effect on David.

We pick up at I Samuel 20, verse 32. Because Saul has become so enraged at the deceit, Jonathan attempts to return to the righteous method by telling Saul, "Let's face up to the facts of life." Instead of becoming angry at the painful insult delivered by Saul, he appeals to Saul's conscience, which had worked before, but Saul is so enraged now that Jonathan's godly method is too late, and it does not work.

Verse 32:

But Jonathan answered Saul his father and said to him, "Why should he be put to death? What has he done?" [He is appealing to Saul's conscience again] Then Saul hurled his spear at him to strike him down; so Jonathan knew that his father had decided to put David to death. Then Jonathan arose from the table in fierce anger [He gets enraged. He has been called a bastard. He has been struck at by his father and for once he gets his eyes off of God. He gets his eyes off his love for his father and acceptance of his father, and he gets mad. The flesh is still the flesh even in Jonathan. He walks out on a holy feast and insults and dishonors his father] and did not eat food on the second day of the new moon, for he was grieved over David because his father had dishonored him.

Jonathan, while enraged at his own dishonor, is even more enraged at David's dishonor, which leads to his demeaning his father. Who started this dishonoring process? David! Who was next? Jonathan! David started it by deceiving Saul. Jonathan continued it by going along with David. And then he wondered why he and David were dishonored by Saul. Dishonor breeds dishonor. The moment you get your eyes off of Jesus Christ, [or YHWH of the Old Testament, the same Person] you are just as fleshly as any fleshly man. Your spirituality lasts only as long as Christ is your life. The flesh is totally unconverted.

I had a horrifying experience this week. I was privileged to see myself as I really am. It was a very healthy, but humbling, experience. I have this strange idea that my flesh is getting a little sanctified. But it is not! God drew the veil aside this week and let me have a good whiff of me, and the aroma was not pleasant. I have been a Christian for 25 years, and in 25 years my flesh has not improved one iota.

Likewise, Jonathan's flesh, even though he is a mighty man of God, is incurably evil. It "cannot please God" [Romans 8:8]. Notice! It is not an issue of the will. Many times the flesh longs to please God, to look good in His sight, but the Scriptures state it is totally incapable of pleasing Him. The flesh simply does not have the power to do so no matter how sincere and dedicated it may be.

Do you see the tragedy here? When we left Chapter 19, harmony had been restored between Saul, David and Jonathan. David was back in court and everyone was honoring everyone. Now what do we have? Saul is angry with both Jonathan and David, and he is not just angry, he is enraged. Who is Jonathan angry with? His father, and he also is enraged. How about David? He is angry with Saul and probably a little put out with Jonathan because he didn't pull off this beautiful scheme. So now how does Saul feel toward David in contrast to Chapter 19 when he welcomed him back into court? He is hardened now. He is really hardened against David. This little trick to con Saul into bringing David back into court has had exactly the opposite effect, and Saul is now irrevocably committed to slaying David.

Contrary to how it may look, Saul is not a monster. Later on in his pursuit of David, when David twice has an opportunity to kill him but does not, he responds with great remorse and guilt. He confesses his wrong attitude, calls David righteous, tells him he will be king of Israel and then goes on home. Now, the remorse does not last because he is driven by his paranoia, but he is not a monster.

What kind of a night do you think Saul had [quoting the first phrase of verse 35], "Now it came about in the morning?" He had just called his beloved son a bastard in front of the whole court and had even tried to kill him. This was the son whose love and acceptance he desperately needed because he had rejected his God? He must have had one agonizing night of guilt and remorse and was not about to put a tail on Jonathan. All he undoubtedly wanted was to regain Jonathan's love and acceptance.

But what was Jonathan's attitude toward his father? He had just been publicly dishonored, his beloved brother of the covenant dishonored and his mother insulted with the worst of Oriental insults and all without reason? His attitude was one of rebellion, but it was also one of suspicion. Twice Saul had used his daughters to try to eliminate David. Why not his son? So Jonathan succumbs to more deceit. He persuades David to hide in the field as he shoots arrows. If he says to the lad with him, "Come here get the arrows in front of you," his signal would mean, "Come back, David. There is safety for you." But if he shoots his arrows past the lad and says, "Go get the arrows." That means, "Go, David. Get out of town." This way he planned to fool the lad with him, thinking he was Saul's informant. Since no one else would be in the field, they would not have had to go through all this to hide their plot from anyone but the little child. Jonathan's mind was so mixed up that he did not trust his father nor did he have any concern for guilt or remorse his father might be experiencing.

Verses 35-39.

Now it came about in the morning that Jonathan went out into the field for the appointment with David, and a little lad was with him. And he said to his lad, "Run, find now the arrows which I am about to shoot." As the lad was running, he shot an arrow past him. When the lad reached the place of the arrow which Jonathan had shot, Jonathan called after the lad, and said, "Is not the arrow beyond you?" [The sign to David "Get out of Town."] And Jonathan called after the lad, "Hurry, be quick, do not stay!" And Jonathan's lad picked up the arrow and came to his master. But the lad was not aware of anything; only Jonathan and David knew about the matter.

Saul had not planted the lad out there. Saul was full of remorse and guilt and longed for fellowship with his son. He had not done anything tricky, but David and Jonathan [particularly Jonathan] had. Jonathan saw his father as he saw himself, at the moment, hostile, angry and embittered and imputed to his father his own feelings. He thought this young boy was his father's spy, so he wanted him absent so he and David could have a meeting.

Verse 40:

Then Jonathan gave his weapons to his lad and said to him, "Go, bring them to the city."

The Spirit of God makes very clear that only Jonathan and David knew anything about this whole matter.

When you are out of fellowship with your Lord, you are out of fellowship with your loved ones, and you impute to them you own hostility, suspicions and anger. This, of course, is what breeds anger and hostility. Your loved ones can feel your hostility, and pretty soon you have a dog fight on your hands, and, unfortunately, when you are out of fellowship with your Lord, you almost always impute dishonorable things.

Have you ever noticed when you get upset with someone and are bitter and resentful toward them, you actually impute that bitterness and resentment to them. Then, as you harbor it within yourself, it festers away? Eventually when the Lord takes you out to the woodshed and straightens you out, you discover the fellow you held so much resentment against was totally oblivious to it all. You had just churned yourself into an ulcer while he was out playing golf with a totally clear conscience, maybe even wondering what was wrong with you. This was exactly where Jonathan and David were.

But God is a redemptive God and he begins to move. Verse 41:

When the lad was gone, David rose from the south side and fell on his face to the ground, and bowed three times. And they kissed each other and wept together, but David [wept] more. And Jonathan said to David, "Go in safety, inasmuch as we have sworn to each other in the name of the Lord, saying, 'The Lord will be between me and you, and between my descendants and your descendants forever.'" Then he [David] rose and departed, while Jonathan went into the city.

Why do you think David wept so bitterly? For once in his life he had an older brother who really loved him, who was committed to him and had put him first, even before his own interests. He had clothed David in the clothes of the crown prince and had made a covenant with him acknowledging he would become king. David saw Jonathan as a man who was loyal when loyalty really counted. But he knew Jonathan would stick by his father. Saul was fighting YHWH and had trapped himself into a destructive situation from which there was no escape. Jonathan would accompany his father down the path to destruction hoping he might be able to help.

We have discussed before why Jonathan did not fight Goliath. He did not fight because he would not fight, not because he could not fight. The champion of Israel, Saul, was head and shoulders above all Israelites, just as Goliath of Gath, the champion of the Philistines, was head and shoulders above all the Philistines. Jonathan, obviously filled with the Spirit of God, could very readily have taken on Goliath. He, alone with his armor-bearer, had just taken on the whole Philistine army at Michmash. Remember what he said, "The Lord can save by many or by few," and indeed God gave them total victory over the Philistines. So, if Jonathan was not afraid of the armies of the Philistines, where he could have gotten hit from any angle, why would he be afraid of Goliath who could only throw in one direction. No, he was committed to making his father face up to the fact that he was in rebellion against God, that the Spirit of God had departed from him, and that Saul was without courage. Up to then, Saul had a magnificent record as God's king. He took care of the Ammonites, the Edomites, the Moabites and the Syrian coalition. He was an extraordinary king, a superb fighter, a wonderful general and a brilliant battlefield tactician. But now he stood trembling before one man. Jonathan knew for his father to really become a man of God, he must face the fact that he had lost the Spirit of God. So Jonathan would not pull his father's chestnuts out of the fire.

It has been suggested that possibly Jonathan did not want to hurt his father's pride by taking on Goliath and doing what Saul would not do. But, I do not think he would ever have tried to save his father's pride. Jonathan was a very godly man. I think he wanted to make his father face the fact that the Spirit of God had departed from him, and that he had better get right with his Lord. Now, I cannot quote Scripture on this, but why would a godly man like Jonathan, who was filled with the Spirit and had just had a rousing victory at Michmash, not take on the enemy? Sure the enemy was 9 feet tall, but Jonathan was a fighter, a killer, a skilled warrior. So I feel very strongly, although I cannot support it by Scripture but only by the character of Jonathan, his prior actions and his loyalty to Saul, that he wanted to make Saul face the fact that he was fighting the Lord

Saul may have been a very carnal man, but he built godly principles into Jonathan's life and Jonathan never changed. Neither did his other sons. They all died alongside Saul. They were loyal to their father to death, and even though he was destroying himself, they would not leave him.

David, on the other hand, was a terrible father, and he lost all his sons, including Solomon, his chosen successor. Although Solomon began his kingship as the wisest man in the world, he ended it as a tyrant who departed from his God. He took numerous foreign wives in direct violation of Deuteronomy and even built temples right in Jerusalem to the gods of those wives. He multiplied horses and had a multitude of chariot warriors. He taxed his people unmercifully, making silver and gold just like dust when Deuteronomy admonished against putting silver and gold into your own pockets. He violated everything God had decreed for a king and ended up estranged from the God he had once so fervently loved.

I think we can take a lesson from this. We need to begin right now building into our children. It starts right here with each one of us. It does not start with the schools. It does not start with the government. It starts with me. It starts with you. You can be a "man after God's own heart" and still wind up in trouble if you do not practice God's truth. As we have just seen, Jonathan's beautiful intent of reuniting Saul and David wound up with them hating each other when ungodly methods were used. Intent is not enough. It is the practice that counts!

So, here we have Jonathan going back to his father, and down to destruction with him because he loves Saul, and, I think, because he loves David. How else is he going to keep David from being killed and Saul from killing him.

Why do you think God took this special relationship from David at this particular time? Do you remember what God did to Abraham when he wanted him to become a man of God? "Go forth from your country and from your relatives and from your father's house, to the land which I will show you." (Genesis 12:1). Additionally what does He say to a husband and wife about marriage? "For this cause a man shall leave his father and his mother and shall cleave to his wife and they shall become one flesh." (Genesis 2:24) There is no possibility, in the Hebrew, of having a "cleaving" relationship without a "leaving" relationship first. It does not mean to abandon, but it certainly does mean to leave behind any prior dependencies. And God is about to put David through "boot camp."

When I went through boot camp in the service, the first thing they did was take me from Southern California, where all my ties were, and ship me clear across the country. They totally isolated me from any prior dependency because they wanted me to depend entirely on them, so they could mold me into a man who would obey instantly without question. They deliberately uprooted all of us, took from us everything we could cling to, threw us into the great cauldron and began to turn up the fire-- and it worked!

What did the Assyrian and Babylonian kings do when they conquered a people? They took a whole nation, uprooted them and took them 1,000 miles away. Why? Because you do not fight for foreign soil, you fight for your own land. [When you rent a house, how well do you care for the lawn? When you own the house, how well do you care for the lawn?]

The Babylonians were very smart. The Romans were not so smart. They did not move people bodily around, and, therefore, their legionnaires were stretched very thin. Since the captive people were always on their own turf, they were always rebelling. Caesar should have moved all the Jews right out of Palestine, 1,000 miles away, but he did not. He left them there and the Jewish Zealots caused trouble year after year after year. Still Caesar did not move the Jews. Instead he stationed legions all over to keep and restore order. But the only way the Romans knew how to restore order was to butcher the people revolting, which only led to more rebellion and the eventual destruction of Jerusalem.

Do you remember when Saul sent three different sets of messengers after David and, instead of harming David, they began to prophesy? Then Saul, himself, went to find David, and he, too, began to prophesy. God was saying, "Saul cannot lay a hand on you, David, because I will take even the enemies of God and make them do my bidding." God made a prophet of Saul, in his disobedience, the same as he had when Saul was obedient. Remember the saying, "Is Saul among the prophets?" Well, that saying came from obedience, but then God took Saul in disobedience and made him do exactly the same thing, and the saying was repeated. "Is Saul among the prophets?" That should have told David, "No matter what Saul is like, he is going to do my bidding." Did David get the message? No. He ran to Jonathan and said, "My life is only one step ahead of death." David had gotten his eyes off YHWH and was depending on Jonathan. He ran to Jonathan, not to YHWH. So, God had to get Jonathan out of the picture. David was going to have to get all alone with God with no other dependencies

As an illustration of how beautifully God operates, what memory of Jonathan was David left with when he and Jonathan parted? The memory of a man returning to his father in a loving, accepting manner when his father deserved nothing except hatred, bitterness and resentment. What did David learn from Jonathan's relationship with Saul concerning the love God had for David; that it is never ending and not based on performance; that God loves the unworthy and the undeserving even in the midst of their unworthiness. He learned God had an irrevocable love for him.

While, at this point, Saul, in his madness, was trying to kill David, his friend, David himself later on, when king of Israel, actually killed his own friend. Scripture says nothing about Saul having sexual problems, but David took and, for all intents and purposes, raped [even though it appears she did not try very hard to resist him] Bathsheba, the daughter of one of his best friends, Eliam, and the wife of another of his best friends, Uriah the Hittite, both men of the "thirty", the great warriors of the inner circle, his key bodyguard. Then, having taken her, he killed her husband to cover himself when she became pregnant. Saul, as mad as he was, never did that.

David learned God had an irrevocable love for him even when he committed murder and adultery; crimes that, according to the Law of God, were punishable only by death. David, however, when confronted by Nathan the prophet, offered [in Psalm 51] the only "sacrifice" he could, "a broken and contrite spirit and a broken heart you will not despise." I think Jonathan was the one who modeled for David this amazing grace of God. David understood that brokenness was all that God required. In God's love for David, 1000 years later He would sacrifice His Son to pay the penalty of death for David. While David, of course, did not understand all of the theology involved, he had an amazing grasp of the love and grace of God.

I think David also learned from Jonathan to "love your enemies and be good to those who despitefully use you," a requirement to be a "man after God's own heart."

I would like to skip ahead a little and take a look at God's redemption. Turn to Chapter 23, verses 16 through 18, the last meeting that David had with Jonathan. Saul is relentlessly pursuing David now. He is determined to kill him. He plans to trap and kill him, and David knows it. At this time David is delivering people from their troubles and helping them, but, in spite of that, they are betraying him for Saul's benefit, (part of David's "boot camp.") In the midst of all this, Chap. 23, verse 16, Jonathan, goes to David and encourages him in the Lord.

I Samuel, Chapter 23, Verse 16:

And Jonathan, Saul's son, arose and went to David at Horesh [in the wilderness], and encouraged him in God. Thus he said to him, "Do not be afraid, because the hand of Saul my father shall not find you, [YHWH won't let it happen] and you will be king over Israel [God has anointed you as king. "Get your eyes off your circumstances and onto your God, David'] and I will be next to you [I am relinquishing my rights to the throne. I will be your counselor, your Chief of Staff. I will be second to you.] and Saul my father knows that also [David, you are fighting a battle already won. Don't act like you are a loser. (Jonathan draws him right back to YHWH and the faithfulness of his God.) You have been anointed king over Israel and so you shall be king over Israel]

You will remember, the choices Saul made finally resulted in a "depraved mind," a trialess mind, a mind that could not see things in proper perspective. He could only see things from the way they affected Saul. Jonathan, on the other hand, by his choices, wound up with the mind of Christ. He gave up his temporal kingship, which would have been his the moment David died. He saw things from God's perspective, not looking at the temporal things of this life but at the eternal things of God.

It is intriguing to me the repetition here, verse 18:

So the two of them made a covenant before the LORD; and David stayed at Horesh while Jonathan went to his house.

"Went to his house," is essentially the same phrase as was used in Chapter 20:42, the previous time Jonathan left David to return to Saul. Thus Jonathan went back to his father, and died alongside him.

I am fascinated that some of Jonathan's last words to David were, "I will be next to you." This is a real prophecy, but how could it be? In a real sense, Jonathan was next to David as his counselor, his Chief-of Staff, but in the spirit. Jonathan was a model of what a king ought to be. He was a model of a person who gave up his life for someone else. He gave it up out of love for his father. He gave it up out of love for David. I am sure one of his motivations in returning to Saul was to see that David did not get trapped, that during his father's more rational moments, he could plead the cause of David and he could be an advocate in court for his covenanted brother. Wherever David went, "next to him" was the model of a man after whom David could pattern his life.

Jonathan is a beautiful picture of the Spirit of God, while David is a type of Christ in the Old Testament. What is the Holy Spirit's job in relation to Christ? Is it to plead the cause of the Holy Spirit? No! It is to convict the world of sin and unbelief in Jesus Christ; to convict the world of its unrighteousness because of the righteousness of Jesus Christ, which He modeled before the world during His earthly life and which He continues to manifest through His disciples by the indwelling Holy Spirit; and to convict the world of the accomplished judgement of Satan because of Jesus Christ's conquering of Satan at the cross [Col. 2:13-15]. Since the Holy Spirit is God Himself, He is the equal of the Lord Jesus Christ, and yet he puts himself in subordination to Christ and points people to Christ and away from himself.

That is exactly what Jonathan did. So because Jonathan chose the "right snowball," he ended up a spiritual man with the mind of Christ. He saw things from God's perspective. He gave his life for the love of his father and the hope that he might return Saul to a right relationship with YHWH and that he might also protect David.

As we have seen, Saul, on the other hand, because of his choices, wound up with a "depraved mind," a trialess mind. He could only see things from his own perspective. He got worse and worse. Finally he hunted down a witch at Endor, [the only one he missed when, in the name of God, he had killed all the witches in Israel] to seek counsel from the occult. He was in direct opposition to God and he knew it, and God rebuked him for it.

It was mentioned that it was interesting to see God exercise his prerogatives by removing the honorable heir to the throne and replacing him with a seemingly lesser man. Not only was Jonathan the rightful heir before God took the throne away from his father Saul, but he seemed to be a much better, more righteous man than David at this time.

That is one of the beautiful things about the Scriptures. God does not look at the outward man, the outer performance. He looks at the heart, and David's heart, he says, is equal to or better than Jonathan's. "There is a man after my own heart," God says about David; yet David did everything wrong in the book. We are going to see that. But every time he got cited by God for his sinning, he ran straight to God and confessed. He took his lumps. He did not do what Saul did and rationalize his sin. We are going to see that when he gets in real trouble and is offered three options, one of which is to fall into the hands of the living God, he says, "I want that one. Don't let me fall into the hands of my enemies. Let me fall into your hands." He had a relationship with God that was beautiful and deep. His lifestyle left much to be desired, but not his relationship with God.

This is what God is trying to tell us. It is not our lifestyle; it is not our performance; it is our relationship with Him. It is not whether we conquer sin in our lives; it is whether we want to conquer sin in our lives that counts. God is looking for a deep yearning on our part to be God's man or woman. He will take care of how far and how soon and what sin and in what order--those are God's prerogatives--but He will begin to sanctify your life, and make it righteous, the moment you get serious before Him about dealing with your sin.

In chapters 21 and 22, next time, we will see the high cost of situational ethics. If you are ever tempted to do something you know is wrong because the situation seems to demand it, and you think you can probably get away with it, Chapter 21 and 22 will tell you what it is going to cost you in the end. It is David's first real lesson in his spiritual "Boot Camp."

Prayer:

Father, we thank you so much for the Word of God, for the way it speaks to our hearts, for the way it shows people as they really are, and shows us how we can be such fallible people even though we may be "a man after your own heart." Our motivation may be entirely right and totally holy and yet the moment we put ourselves in the act, we can foul it up in the most ugly way and come out totally ungodly having butchered the whole works. Father, teach us to be smart enough to realize that both the desire and the operation have to be of You. You have told us in Philippians 2:12-13 to "exploit" our salvation because you are the one who is in us both to give us the desire and to put into action what you want us to do, that you do both things for us, Father. The godly intent and the godly power are both from you, never from us. God, help us to be that smart. Help us to be wise as serpents and harmless as doves. Help us to be Christians. Thank you, Father, in Jesus' name.

World Daily News / China Population Declines
August 03, 2022, 06:05:09 AM
The world's most-populous country has been grappling with a looming demographic crisis as it faces a rapidly ageing workforce, slowing economy and its weakest population growth in decades.

And although officials relaxed the nation's strict "one-child policy" in 2016 and last year allowed couples to have three children, the birth rate has plunged to a record low.

"The growth rate of the total population has slowed down significantly, and it will enter a stage of negative growth in the '14th Five-Year Plan' period," the National Health Commission said Monday, referring to the period between 2021 and 2025.

In January, authorities said that forecasts expected the population to enter zero growth "or even negative growth" in that five-year span.

"Presently, our country's policy system for childbirth support is not perfect, and there is a big gap with population development and the people's expectations," the NHC said in its latest report.

The total fertility rate has dropped below 1.3 in recent years, it added, while the country is expected to enter a stage of severe ageing around 2035, with more than 30 percent of the population older than 60.

Families are also becoming smaller, "weakening" the functions of pension and childcare, the health commission said, calling for improving child-raising support and for policies on housing, education and taxation to help reduce burdens on families.

Authorities in some parts of China are already introducing family-friendly policies in a bid to combat the slowing birth rate. | via Agence France-Presse

The Philippine Petroleum Association (PAP) has requested Department of Energy (DOE) Secretary-designate Raphael Perpetuo M. Lotilla to prioritize the resumption of gas and oil exploration ventures in the Philippines.

Gas and oil explorations in the Philippines remained stagnant during former President Duterte's term.

PAP Chairman Rufino B. Bomasang said that "It is extremely imperative for the country to resume oil and gas exploration as soon as possible," and adds that "the country's precarious energy security situation – with its almost total dependence on imported oil and the imminent depletion of Malampaya gas."

While PAP's President, Edgar Benedict Cutiongco stated that "We need somebody like Secretary Lotilla to provide the springboard for the much-needed quantum leap to a more sustainable and secured energy situation in the country."

Bomasang noted that DOE Secretary-designate Lotilla had decades of experience in the energy industry which will contribute to the success of the sector.

Despite the lifting of the moratorium on gas and oil exploration in the West Philippine Sea, petroleum seismic surveys and drilling activities were essentially nonexistent.

Despite the push of DOE officials for roadshows on the Philippine Conventional Energy Contracting Program (PCECP), it was not enough to attract foreign investors to the sector.

On the part of Filipino companies to begin their exploration activities on their awarded petroleum blocks, these we eventually canceled due to China's activities on the highly contested waters. This caused the Filipino companies to cancel their contractors and plans for targeted drillings and seismic surveys.

Facts and Trivia / Witch on Broom
July 31, 2022, 09:41:28 AM
By FB page post. So where did the idea that witches ride broomsticks come from? The answer may be surprising.

According to a leading theory, witches in the Middle Ages used the ergot fungus, or plants such as belladonna and mandrake, to create hallucinogenic salves, brews and ointments, which they took as part of their rituals. Shakespeare depicts witches cooking up a batch of the brew in Macbeth. Although the drugs could be taken orally, the effect was better and faster if absorbed through the skin (thus also avoiding the abdominal pain that ingesting it orally could cause). The best way to absorb the concoction through the skin was to apply it a warm moist area such as the underarm or, well, I'm sure you can think of another such place. To apply it they would coat a smooth rounded piece of wood with the brew then place the wood into the warm moist area. A broomstick worked well for this delicate task. It isn't difficult to imagine why some would refer to this practice as "riding the broomstick," particularly since the resulting hallucinations often included a sensation of flying.

The images are a drawing by Albrecht Dürer from the 15th century, an etching by Francisco Goya, and the painting "Preparation for the Witches Sabbath" by David Teniers the younger (note the broomstick in the background).

VP SARA DUTERTE PUBLIC STATEMENT

I wore that traditional Bagobo Tagabawa dress to the State of the Nation Address of President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr in honor of one of the tribes that form the 11 groups of people of Davao City, apart from the Christians.

But I also wore it in solidarity with the lumads of Mindanao and the many other Indigenous Peoples groups all over the country who have been uprising against the terrorist New People's Army's chronic exploitation of their children, arming them as new recruits — nevermind if they are still minors and unable to understand the madness of the terrorism espoused by the NPAs.

I wore the traditional Bagobo Tagabawa dress to raise awareness of the victimization of the IPs by the NPA and the Communist Party of the Philippines and the National Democratic Front of the Philippines.

It was lobbying in the open public the welfare of IPs who have always been the favorite darling of the NPA for their recruitment and attacks — which happen every time they register their resistance.

It was to hold a space for another narrative unknown to many Filipinos and to bridge public awareness of what is horribly happening to the IPs in remote places — deceptions, recruitments, and killings are carried out without mercy by the NPAs and their supporters.

This brings me to Eufemia Cullamat, the mother of an NPA fighter who died in Mindanao in 2020.

As an IP herself, Cullamat should apologize to her fellow IPs for allowing a terrorist group like the NPA to strip them of their dignity as a people and dragging them into a war that serves them nothing as IPs.

And as a mother of a dead NPA fighter, she should apologize to her daughter for sending her to her untimely gruesome demise.

Before I stepped down as mayor, Davao City was declared insurgency-free. IPs in Paquibato District and other hinterlands of Davao are now living a life free from NPAs. They are now safe from the likes of Cullamat.

And I will continue to borrow and wear traditional dresses from IPs and other groups I want to honor and stand in solidarity with against terrorist organizations like the NPA and people like Cullamat.

And I will not waver. In fact, you will see me even more relentless because I have a responsibility to the Filipino people, especially to the Filipino children.

And I promise not to stop so that parents like Cullamat do not bury the bullet-ridden bodies of their children — killed in a war perpetuated by a senseless and idiotic ideology.

Thank you.

Noong 1988, idineklara ni dating Pangulong Corazon Aquino ang Hulyo 28 ng bawat taon bilang Boy Scouts of the Philippines Memorial Day.

Philippine Daily News / Chinese Kidnap Victim
July 29, 2022, 07:36:15 PM
7 CHINESE, 2 PINOYS ARRESTED FOR ABDUCTING A CHINESE MAN

Nine suspected kidnappers—seven Chinese nationals and two Filipinos—were arrested in a police operation in Porac, Pampanga on Thursday afternoon, July 28 at 9:15 p.m.

Police authorities in Central Luzon successfully rescued a Chinese kidnap victim after the latter was able to call his live-in partner and divulged his possible location.

Operatives were quick to respond and initially located one of the vehicles used by the suspects during the abduction.

The owner of the rented vehicle gave the location of the car through its installed Global Positioning System (GPS).

They positively tracked the house where the victim was hidden.

On the scene were the seven Chinese male kidnappers and two Filipinos who took part in guarding the area.

The arrested kidnappers were identified as Wang Zhen Yu, He Lei, Guo Xiao Qiang, Shi Nan, Xu He Feng, He HAo, Huang Bing Zhou, and Filipino nationals Leoger B Buenaventura and Warren B Estera. They were positively identified by the kidnap victim.

According to police report, the victim was kidnapped by more than 10 male Chinese nationals aboard three vehicles in Angeles City. He was reportedly mauled by the suspects during the incident.

"Another pat on the back for our police personnel who carefully executed the operation so as not to endanger the life of the victim. We will coordinate with our Chinese police counterparts regarding this case," PNP OIC Lt. Gen. Vicente Danao Jr. said.

Philippine Business News / How to Avoid Gcash Scam
July 29, 2022, 07:34:12 PM
BUSINESS: GCash warns public anew against scams

GCash, the Philippines' no.1 mobile wallet, tells its customers to be extra vigilant and renews its call for users to #GCheckMuna to avoid being victimized by fraudsters. Here's a #GCheckList with helpful advice for Filipinos on how to avoid fraud online:

• Be aware of the various types of scams. Stay up to date on fraudsters' modus operandi on the news or from trusted experts and organizations like GCash. Some scammers resort to swindling or use account takeover to scam people.

• Avoid account takeover or phishing. Scammers often pose as a company representative or a loved one to trick you into giving your One-time Password (OTP). That's why it's important to never share your MPIN or OTP.  Also, don't click links outside of the GCash app.

• Stay away from fake online sellers. Make purchases only from trusted online sellers, or at least research online if the seller is legitimate. Check when the account was created, if the seller transacts with multiple customers, and if they have repeat customers. Also, take the time to read the customer reviews

• Be wary of fake rewards and offers. Official GCash promos and raffles will only be released via email, SMS, and official social media pages. Likewise, beware of illegitimate investments, especially if they seem too good to be true.

To further help ensure customers' safety and security, GCash has various swindling and phishing protective measures in place. GCash's swindling solutions include real-time risk monitoring of Send Money and Bank Transfer transactions with potential scammers being flagged, as well as online shopping insurance to protect against scams for as low as P15 a month.

GCash's phishing solutions include real-time risk monitoring; risk-based authentication through face verification, OTP, and security questions for unusual transactions; fraud management, which includes immediately blacklisting of fraudulent users; and fraud handling, which includes close collaboration with the Philippine National Police - Anti-Cybercrime Group to apprehend guilty parties.

To report scams and fraudulent activities, visit the official GCash Help Center at https://help.gcash.com/hc/en-us or message Gigi on the website and type, "I want to report a scam." GCash will NEVER send you a personal message to address concerns. Customers can also reach out to the official GCash hotline: 2882 for queries and other concerns.

TODAY'S EDITORIAL: Review K to 12. President Ferdinand Marcos Sr. has ordered the Department of Education to review the K to 12 program to determine if it is really having an impact on our student's level of comprehension.

"We need to do a lot to recover our grading. Mataas tayo noon, eh. Kailangan nating balikan 'yan ... There was also the question on when to start to teach in English, when we move from lingua franca to English; 'yung K to 12, kung kailangan pa talaga 'yung K to 12 and many of the other issues," President Marcos was quoted as saying in an online news report.

Yes, K to 12 is worth looking at again, especially those two extra years for high school. Do they really make a difference? Because it seems we just jumped into K to 12 like we would dive into water without testing the depth first.

To say K to 12 was rushed would be an understatement. Teachers, parents, and students were not ready for it when it was rammed down their throats. There were not enough classrooms to house two entire batches of students that had to hang back from college because of the additional years. Many parents were also not ready for those two additional years of spending for tuition, allowances, uniforms, fare, and other expenses.

Students who underwent those two extra years, speaking to personnel of this newspaper, said they are not sure what they learned made them better students, let alone more competitive worldwide.

Even those teaching those extra two years were not sure of their own curriculum. One principal said it best; "it was hit or miss."

Findings will either recommend making some improvements to K to 12 or the more radical one of scrapping it entirely and reverting back to the four levels of high school.

Though the latter is the most unlikely to happen, if it does there will have to be another set of complex changes and adjustments as two more years will have to be shaved off our educational system.

The Department of Education, headed by President Marcos' ally Vice President Sara Duterte Carpio, will certainly have its hands full carrying out this review. The department must not forget what it at stake; the quality of our students.

The decision of Poland to procure 48 new FA-50 Fighting Eagle light combat aircraft is actually both a boon and bane for the Philippine Air Force.

Adding another international user of the FA-50 will, as we said before, improve the supportability of the type for a longer period of time. This is important for the PAF since it is a historical long term user of aircraft models, with fighters even exceeding 30 years in service before retirement (S-211s are now 30+ years old, F-5A/Bs were retired  after 40 years in service).

This would push KAI to continue supporting the FA-50 program, and improve the product over time.

But the Polish order also means having 48 aircraft orders ahead of any planned procurement of additional FA-50s by the PAF.

If the PAF decide to buy additional FA-50s anytime soon, the delivery time would be pushed back because Poland ordered first. Malaysia is also expected to order a squadron's worth, and if their order comes in first, that means an even longer delivery time for a Philippine order.

The PAF has an existing plan to procure an additional 12 FA-50 or similar aircraft to fulfill its plan to have 24 such aircraft, categorized as the Fighter/Surface Attack Aircraft/Lead-in Fighter Trainer (F/SAA/LIFT).

Filipino seafarer missing at sea from ship bound for Canada

A Filipino seafarer has been declared missing in the high seas from a ship that sailed from South Korea bound for Canada.

The missing seafarer was identified as Kristoferry Mantilla Tañeca, 35, a crew member of the M/V Navios Phoenix, according to the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA).

Tañeca, a 2nd officer on his ship is the second Filipino seafarer declared missing from a ship in a week. Previously confirmed missing by the POEA was Lucio Cabading Sablas, captain of M/V Algeciras Express, in the Mediterranean Sea.

The crew of M/V Navios Phoenix, a Panamanian-flagged bulk carrier, discovered Mantilla missing on June 28 while the ship was in the high seas. The crew reportedly held a full search of the vessel for Mantilla.

M/V Navios Phoenix's captain also aired an international radiotelephony signal indicating an urgent situation on board their ship.

The ship was expected to dock in Canada on July 21, and Canadian and Panamanian authorities will conduct their own investigation, the Interorient Maritime agency told POEA.

Sinampahan siya ng kasong Reckless Imprudence Resulting to Damage to Property at paglabag sa Anti-Drunk and Drugged Driving Act of 2013 (RA 10586).

By The FB Page: The Roncal Legacy
"We look at the life of Mayor Roncal and we see a manifestation of the Paschal Mystery". This was Father Julius de Gracia's reflection during his first mass in Tacurong as a newly ordained priest.

As one of the central concepts of Christian faith, the Paschal Mystery's primary subject delves on the suffering, death, and Resurrection of Christ; but sans the religious lingo, Paschal Mystery is present in our everyday life. It permeates every niche of our existence... pain and happiness, defeat and victory, failure and success.

For people who keep themselves privy about the Montillas and the local politics in Tacurong, Father de Gracia's description holds true.

Before assuming Tacurong's mayoralty post in 2019, Roncal spent almost one third of his lifetime in hiding and seclusion, the price of being wrongfully accused of a crime he did not commit. For more than fifteen years, he had been deprived of many precious things in his life. He was not able to see his kids grow into young adults. He cannot spend Christmas and holidays with his siblings and family. He cannot go to a hospital when he was sick. And most painfully, he was not there to bury his parents when both of them passed away.

Years turned into decade and in that span, his being had been gradually shattered into pieces. At his lowest point, the motivation he had was the love and unceasing support of his family and the people back home praying for his vindication. And during the dark years of being in hiding, the glimmer of light in his desolation was the presence of his wife, Cora, who physically stayed besides him throughout the suffering.

Back home, Roncal's siblings were tirelessly doing the best they can to seek justice for their beloved brother. After countless court appeals and agonizing wait that dragged on for almost two decades, the anticipated vindication came. His case was dismissed. The Roncal of old was whole again.

Many people would always wonder where Angelo Montilla got his nickname Roncal. The answer has something to do with the strong Catholic faith of his parents, Antonio and Asuncion. He was born on November 30, 1958, a month after Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli, the man who would become Pope John XXIII, was installed as head of the Catholic Church.

𝙏𝙖𝙘𝙪𝙧𝙤𝙣𝙜'𝙨 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙜𝙚𝙨𝙩 𝙚𝙡𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝙢𝙖𝙮𝙤𝙧

Roncal's foray into public service had its great share of feats and travails. He held the distinction of being the youngest elected mayor of Tacurong in 1988, the first elections held since the restoration of Philippine democracy. In a close-knit family of businessmen and professionals who relatively preferred a quiet life, he was the first to be immersed in politics. His leadership, charisma, and down-to-earth demeanor made people embrace him. His public service acumen paved way for a huge turnaround in governance, especially on infrastructure and financial administration, two areas that direly needed attention during that period.

His family's Christian faith also served as the foundation of Roncal's governance.  His father would always tell him and his other siblings: "Kung gusto n'yo magserbisyo sa tawo, serbisyo kamo sang sinsero kag tampad. Indi n'yo paggub-on ang aton pangalan." (If you want to serve the people, serve them with all sincerity and honesty. Do nothing that will tarnish our name.)

Sound governance at the local level made people decide to give Roncal the congressional seat in the lone district of Sultan Kudarat in 1995. It was in Congress that he built many of his legacies. His sponsorship of the bill converting the Municipality of Tacurong into a city towered among his many other accomplishments at the lower house. For Roncal, public service was his calling.

𝙋𝙧𝙞𝙘𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙗𝙚𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙛𝙖𝙡𝙨𝙚𝙡𝙮 𝙖𝙘𝙘𝙪𝙨𝙚𝙙 𝙤𝙛 𝙖 𝙘𝙧𝙞𝙢𝙚

Roncal had so many plans for his district and his beloved hometown but those plans suddenly were cut short due to an unthinkable circumstance. In his public narrative on nutrition governance in March 2020, Mayor Roncal stated: "I was at the peak of my political career when something incomprehensible happened. I was accused of a crime I did not commit. What person in his right mind would mastermind the killing of innocent persons? For more than 15 years, I was in hiding. I cannot surrender because some people were out there waiting to take my life. Surrender would mean death for me."

On the other hand, being on the run had ironically given Roncal the chance to immerse himself in an impoverished community. For years, he and his wife Cora had lived in a shanty that would leave them dripping wet during heavy rains. People living around were so poor. Roncal and Cora lived as one of them. There was scarcity of almost everything... livelihood, health services, social protection. Roncal would recall that there were several occasions people would come to their house begging to lend them money because there's a family emergency. "When I asked them how much money they need, they would meekly say P200. Just for that amount of money, it seemed like a matter of life and death for them", Roncal said. "When I told them they don't have to pay for their borrowed money, it's as if you've done a very big favor to them. For these great and humble people, every cent counts."

Roncal would also gladly recount the time when they had to leave the place they considered home for several years. People in our small community would be seen lining up the streets to bid their sincere goodbyes to us. "I was deeply touched by their gesture", he would say.

𝘾𝙤𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙪𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙈𝙤𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙡𝙡𝙖 𝙗𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙤𝙛 𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙙𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙝𝙞𝙥

Justice had evaded Roncal for many years and, back home, it also denied the people of the kind of leadership that they passionately long for.

It was during the period of his absence when other Montillas took up the cudgels and continued the type of public service Roncal had started. Roncal's younger brother Lino took over the reins of the city leadership from 2001 to 2010. For nine years, he had proven himself to be as outstanding as his older brother. The Canada-Philippines Kaagapay Seal of Excellence in Governance conferred Tacurong City in 2004 was a testament to Lino's illustrious career in politics.

Lino was succeeded by his younger sister Lina who not only became the first lady mayor of Tacurong, but also propelled the city to greater heights in terms of progress and development under her nine-year tenure.

Fast forward to 2019. Local elections was looming and Mayor Lina was about to complete her last term in office. Tacurong City was in need of a new leader who would equal or surpass Lina's achievements. Roncal re-entered the political landscape as a mayoralty candidate. He was a year fresh of becoming a free man after the dismissal of his case.

𝙇𝙤𝙣𝙜-𝙖𝙬𝙖𝙞𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙗𝙖𝙘𝙠 𝙤𝙛 𝙖 𝙗𝙚𝙡𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙙 𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙙𝙚𝙧

Physically, Roncal appeared to be frail and the years in hiding seemed to have taken its toll on his body. Prior to the campaign kickoff, several people had doubted his chances of victory but Roncal and his camp were ready to change the narrative. True enough, he proved that he still had the backing of old voters and was even successful in convincing the millennial electorate to rally behind him. When the election dust had settled, Roncal was declared as the runaway winner. It was a rare successful comeback of a politician after almost two decades of political hiatus. The Roncal magic had once again worked. And he was ready for a restart.

A month before he took his oath, he wasted no time by holding several meetings with outgoing Mayor Lina and the LGU department heads to keep him abreast of the state of the city government. His transition committee immediately went to work and helped him lay the groundwork of his governance. He treated everything with urgency. For him, there is still so much to be done for his beloved Tacurong.

Just six months into his term, Mayor Roncal was able to implement one of his flagship projects: the construction of a state-of-the-art dialysis center. Empathizing with the plight of financially strapped dialysis patients and their families, Roncal sees the dialysis center as a big help to ease their financial burden. Meanwhile, the installation of solar-powered street lights along national highways and major thoroughfares of the central business district was also a priority project Roncal materialized before his first term ended.

𝙏𝙞𝙧𝙚𝙡𝙚𝙨𝙨 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙠𝙚𝙧 𝙬𝙝𝙤 𝙬𝙖𝙡𝙠𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙩𝙖𝙡𝙠

Inside city hall, it can be recalled that Mayor Roncal's first-day-in-office message to employees was an appeal to improve customer relations. His marching order: demonstrate courtesy and respect in the workplace, especially towards the clients. "Bawal ang nagakurisong nga mga empleyado sa mga opisina sang city hall (frowning has no place inside the workplace)", were the words he emphasized. "Customers must experience not only the comfort of LGU offices but also the hospitality and warm welcome of the employees", the mayor would repeatedly say.

For young employees who had just experienced working under Mayor Roncal, they would always marvel at how passionate he was toward his work. He would set an example even in simple things. He would be the first to arrive in the office and the last to go out. Anybody can visit his office without prior appointment.  One would worry that he or she can only get a few minutes of the mayor's time but once he started talking to you, he's not worried how long you've been staying in his office.

People admired his eloquence; they would listen attentively when he talks. He had a very sharp memory too. You mention one trivial thing today and he will remind you about it the next time you meet. You promise to deliver a task and he will remind you about it at the deadline. He always wanted to get every job done expeditiously. He repeatedly reminded employees that there is no room for complacency because people expect so much from government workers. And the government must always deliver.

Outside the confines of the city, he had also gotten the admiration and respect of his fellow mayors in Region 12. Despite being a first-termer, he was chosen by these local chief executives to represent them in the influential League of Cities of the Philippines. In the words of Bacolod City Mayor and LCP National President Evelio Leonardia: "Our LCP community had always held the Montilla brand of public service in high esteem."

With Mayor Roncal in the driver's seat, the future of the city was looking bright. Out of the blue, COVID-19 came and it disrupted everybody's way of life.

𝘾𝙤𝙨𝙩𝙡𝙮 𝙗𝙖𝙩𝙩𝙡𝙚 𝙖𝙜𝙖𝙞𝙣𝙨𝙩 𝙘𝙤𝙧𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙫𝙞𝙧𝙪𝙨

The pandemic overwhelmed our public health system and debilitated the local economy. For more than a year, all the people, especially the local leaders, were coming to grips with its unprecedented impact. Mayor Roncal, despite his vulnerability to the virus, continued to be on the frontlines in the city's battle against COVID-19. In his State of the City Address in February 2021, Mayor Roncal continued to appeal for the people's resilience and discipline in the face of adversity. "This health crisis exhausted our financial resources and drained the energy of our health workers and frontliners, but there is no reason for us to lower our guard. This is the time to bravely face more challenges... this is the time to step up our actions", he would say. In the face of crisis, Mayor Roncal showed the people that he is in the forefront of the battlefield no matter the cost.

Nobody thought it will cost him his life.

In the wee hours of June 5, 2021, after a week of being in self-quarantine, Mayor Roncal had experienced difficulty of breathing. His oxygen level plummeted. He was rushed to a hospital in General Santos City, tested positive for COVID-19, put in life support and from there on, fought for his life. The following day, Mayor Roncal succumbed to the coronavirus. The whole family was shocked at the mayor's sudden passing. His siblings were all devastated and could not believe at the wild turn of events. Roncal's older sister and brother-in law were admitted at the hospital a day before him and while he himself was inside the emergency room, Roncal would ask about the condition of his other siblings. Here was a man who was fighting for his life yet still worrying about the condition of his loved ones.

One could only imagine the pain Roncal's death inflicted to his brothers, sisters, and family members. Fate separated them for nearly two decades and when the time came for them to catch up for the lost years of togetherness, this happened. Aggravating the pain was the fact that they cannot hold a wake for his remains due to the coronavirus protocols.

His wife, Cora, was left dumbfounded and crushed. Few days before that, she was talking with her husband about family and work. The next thing she knew, she was at the hospital praying profusely that her husband will survive.

The news about Mayor Roncal's passing sent shockwaves not only around Tacurong but to people in other places that have known him or close to him. He was a big loss to his family. The city lost a great leader. Why him and why so early? There are so many whys and what ifs but at the end of the day, nobody can really fathom God's will.

𝙇𝙚𝙖𝙫𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙖𝙣 𝙞𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙡𝙞𝙗𝙡𝙚 𝙡𝙚𝙜𝙖𝙘𝙮

In hindsight, Roncal's public service journey had taken a completely different route compared to other politicians. His passion and commitment to serve seemed to be his curse. When he was at a momentum, some forces of nature seemed to always conspire against him. There was always that sword of Damocles hanging above his head ready to fall anytime. But if dying this early is his destiny, his death was not in vain. Things may not have worked out the way he wanted it to be, but the people are consoled by the fact that, in his lifetime, he had done his part for his city and for his people.

One does not have to be a Christian to grasp the meaning of Paschal Mystery but time will come for us to realize that our life is actually patterned after it. We all endure our own battles. At times, we will bask in victory but there will always be moments we will get knocked down and even hit rock bottom. That is the cycle of human life. At some point in our lifetime, we will experience our own passion, death and resurrection. By resurrection, we reflect about the newness of life, glory and hope.

In Roncal's public service journey, he might have endured more suffering than personal glory but he will always be remembered as a leader who sacrificed his life in the name of service. His passing may have left a huge void in the hearts of Tacurongnons but he left an indelible legacy that future generations will not forget. There may not be enough time for him to serve his beloved city but there will be many other Roncals in this generation and the next who will continue his brand of public service. Our continuing future will still be brighter and Roncal will be there to light the way. (Allan S. Freno, LGU Information)

Bong Go files resolution commending and congratulating Filipinas team for their historic win in ASEAN Football Federation Women's Championship

Recognizing the glory and honor they brought to the country, Senator Christopher "Bong" Go filed Senate Resolution No. 62 on Monday, July 25, commending and congratulating all of the members of the Filipinas Football Team for winning the country's first-ever 2022 ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Women's Championship last July 17 at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.

Over 8,000 spectators witnessed the Filipinas' historic win over the regional powerhouse Thailand War Elephants, 3-0. The Filipino team has already made history earlier this year by also clinching the Philippines' first World Cup berth.

Go's resolution exhibits his continuing efforts as Chair of the Senate Committee on Sports to promote long-term sports development in the country, particularly to encourage more sports programs, league competitions, and amateur sports, including training for international sports competitions, to instill self-discipline, teamwork, and excellence.

"I have consistently pushed for an intensive sports development in the country as I believe sports is an effective way to keep Filipino youth away from vices," expressed Go.

"Napatunayan po na napakalaki ng kontribusyon ng sports sa ating bansa, hindi lamang natutulungan ang ating mga kababayan sa kanilang kalusugan kundi nabibigyan din sila ng napakaraming oportunidad sa larangan ng palakasan," he continued.

Meanwhile, Go likewise commended the team's manager Jeff Cheng and head coach Alen Stajcic for inspiring the team to always do their best that led them to win their first championship in this year's AFF.

The resolution likewise cited that the triumph of the Filipinas team is a result of their hard work, dedication and perseverance. Furthermore, Go acknowledged how the Filipino athletes have showcased their grit, determination and competitiveness in international sporting events.

"The symbolic win has not only brought our nation pride and honor, but has become an inspiration to youth and women empowerment," remarked Go.

The senator also vowed to remain steadfast in promoting and protecting the welfare and interests of the Filipino athletes.

In this respect, Go recently pushed for the passage of the Philippine National Games (PNG) Act of 2022 that shall provide a structure for a more comprehensive national sports program, linking grassroots sports promotion to national sports development.

Not to be confused with Palarong Pambansa, the PNG is a national multi-sport tournament that aims to widen the base talent identification and efficiently constitute the national pool to be trained for international sports competition.

Likewise, the proposed bill aims to ensure a more inclusive system of promoting promising Filipino athletes who possess potential in various fields of sports to be given an equal opportunity of becoming future contenders in international sporting competitions and cement the country's status as a "Sports Powerhouse in Asia".

"I am one with President (Ferdinand) Marcos Jr. in highlighting the importance of sports in nation-building. I reiterate my firm commitment to always look after the welfare of our athletes and to push for long-term and grassroots sports development," Go previously said.

"These will both help our country become again as one of the sports powerhouses in Asia and also encourage our young people to stay away from illegal drugs and criminality by getting into sports," he added.

Chanel No. 5 is a luxury perfume that retails between 3200 pesos to 7400 pesos per bottle. A lot of Filipinos prize it for being "Imported" and "branded". But did you know that one of the main ingredients for this Perfume is the Ylang-Ylang and the Philippines is considered its top exporter, Particularly from Pangasinan? As the story goes, "Coco Chanel asked perfume-maker Ernest Bo to create the ideal scent for a woman's perfume. In 1921, he gave her a series of samples to try. She chose the 5th, made up of sweet essences of rose, jasmine, and ylang-ylang flowers."

Ylang-ylang or ilang-ilang, also known as Cananga odorata, is a tree indigenous to the Philippines. It can grow to about 25 m in height but it has a dwarf counterpart. It is covered year-round with drooping, long-stalked, rich-scented flowers that have six narrow, greenish-yellow petals. It is highly prized for its essential oil which has been shown to have a few benefits, particularly for Anxiety, Depression, Frigidity, hypertension, and stress (It looks like I need to stock up on these flowers) Because of its lingering scent it has been hailed as the flower among flowers; hence the origin of its name in Filipino, Ilang-ilang. It is also hailed as the Queen of Perfumes in consideration of its widespread use in different perfumes, internationally.

The Ilang-ilang is one of the native trees that are threatened by the introduction of Mahogany into our natural forests. As the Ilang-ilang is fast growing and requires full-sunlight exposure the Mahogany becomes its top competitor. However, since the Mahogany is also fast growing but grows taller than the Ilang-ilang, it has a tendency to deprive the Ilang-ilang of its much preferred and needed sunlight.

Let us reflect on this. We have a lot of Native flowering trees that are recognized abroad yet we, ourselves, do not know about their existence and their value. For all we know, you might have walked past by a Ylang-ylang tree without much care for what it is and how highly valued it is overseas.

I am urging the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), our Local Government Units, and our Local Tree Farmers to plant Ylang-ylang in our parks, our schools, and other public places instead of  MAHOGANY. I also urge DepEd Philippines and Commission on Higher Education(CHED) to reinforce its curriculum on the environment to include NATIVE TREES so that people become aware of their existence and at the same time develop a deep and profound appreciation for what is NATURALLY ours. Let us stop romanticizing what other countries have when in fact, we have our own trees that rival, if not better, than that which other countries have. Our Native trees are as much FILIPINO as we are, let us protect them and make sure the generation that will come after us will still be able to enjoy and appreciate them as we have.

If you want to reach out to us and invite us to speak in front of your school or barangay, especially in terms of the environment, we will be more than happy to work with you. We will be scheduling tree planting activities throughout the rainy season and you are welcome to join us. We also have regular seed hubs (gatherings where we give out free seeds). If you have questions regarding your tree planting activities, you may send me a PM for inquiries or join Visayas Native Tree Enthusiasts. You may also check out my Youtube channel for updates relating to our activities as a group! https://youtu.be/xkGAfwOp35w

Kudos to Sacred Heart School – Ateneo de Cebu for choosing to plant Ylang-ylang and other native trees  on the Campus; being true stewards of the Environment through Laudato Si!. The pictures below are of the many Ylang-ylang that surrounds the school. There are also a few specimens that can be found lining up the streets of Busay, Cebu.

Help spread the advocacy!

Philippine History / Sultanate of Sulu, Philippines
July 27, 2022, 07:24:05 AM
Sultunate of Sulu (Philippines) and Malaysia

The North Borneo dispute, also known as the Sabah dispute, is the territorial dispute between Malaysia and the Philippines over much of the eastern part of the state of Sabah. Sabah was previously known as North Borneo prior to the formation of the Malaysian federation.

The Philippines, presenting itself as the successor state of the Sultanate of Sulu , retains a "dormant claim" on Eastern Sabah on the basis that the territory was only leased to the British North Borneo Company in 1878, with the sovereignty of the Sultanate (and subsequently the Republic) over the territory never having been relinquished.

However, Malaysia considers this dispute as a "non-issue", as it interprets the 1878 agreement as that of cession, and it deems that the residents of Sabah (including Eastern Sabah) had exercised their right to self-determination when they joined to form the Malaysian federation in 1963.

I've been thinking for a couple of days if I have to post this in social media, since this is my private life. It's a long story and if you are impatient, then skip reading.

At the age of 4, my mama passed away. I couldn't even remember a single memory of her. Sad right? But then, the world isn't that unfair because I still have my Papa and of course my siblings biskan mura mig iro ug iring. I am the youngest, the so called menopausal baby and the reason why all the failures that my siblings have caused dli na gusto ni Papa mahitabo skoa or mahimo nako. Kani tungod kay akong mga magulang wla nakahuman skwela.

When I was 7 years old, I started dreaming. I made all that to buy my personal needs. Kay xempre dli na kaya ni Papa tanan.

Mag-uuma/mangoprasay akong papa ug bisan asa lang xa manghornal (manarbaho) basta ting kopras. And I'm proud of him kay bisag pobre kaymi, wla xa nakahuna² byaan mi or mo give up. I know how to make basket (bukag), bilao, banig, etc. because I inherited my mama's skills. If I made bilao it's my Papa who made its handle. Ako lng sa base, it's because hait kaayo ang materials. My Papa is one of a kind, very responsible and if I have the chance to choose, I'll still choose him as my father. But one thing he lack of is that, he's not showy of his feelings

June 3, 2005, my Papa wasn't around that's why my aunt decided to enroll me and my cousin. "Tara baligya tag marang para naa moy pampalit lapis ug papel." Mao ni linyahan skong ante (tiya Lida) I am so excited without minding kung unsa pa na ka bug at ang lokduhon nko na marang and imagine it is 1-2 hours baklayon gkan bukid palugsong sa bario and vise versa. Dli pana sali if mag ulan.

Why? It's because I'm shy with my classmates having hotdog and rice as their lunch. Tulak² ug bag tapos complete uniform. Naay sapatos, bag o mga sanina, humot and all. Tas ako juskoooo ang baon bugas sa mais na perti kagahi paresan pag bulad na tamban, nya gbalot sa dahon sa saging. Nya kung imu abrehan manimaho na tamban tanan

Ingon ani akong baon matag adlaw, bugas sa mais usahay sinugba nga kamote which is prefer pa nko ang sinugba nga kamote. Kung ma swertehan naay bugas, edi happy kaayo. Akong bag cellophane HAHA tas akong sanina balik² Worst, akong lapis taas pa skong tudlo, nya dli ko palitan kay part of the punishment nganu mamugos skwela. Naka try ko mamaligya kahoy, kalabasa, ug uban pang klase sa gulay para makapalit school supplies. And  I am the one waking up everyday during school days at 2:30 am. Cooking for breakfast and for my baon. Nay times na wla mi posporo kaya gnabuhat nko bago matulog, sugnuran ang kalayo ug kahoy para dugay mapalong. Gaadtu kog school everyday quarter to 5 kay layo man. Sahay may ligo, sahay wla kay layo kaayo ang sapasahay naa koy sabay mag uli, apan permi ako ra isa. There were times na kung mag dag om paunhon kog uli skong teacher kay lge layo pa kaayo amoa.

Ug pila may storya nahuman kog grade 1 as most behave HAHAHA mao rana akong ribbon. Akong maestra rapud nagtaud. Next destination, Grade 2 nko yeyyy I started being focus sa klase tsarrr, but true. Studious kayko. During closing, I end up second honor. Nakalimot nko knsa nagtaud skong ribbon pero wla ko kalimot na lima to kabuok. I'm so happy and proud of myself, maybe my Papa will change his mind and see that I'm doing good in school. But sad to say walay reaction I just told myself that, cguru dli lang gyud showy si Papa kung paunsa xa ka proud skoa.

Grade 3-5 I was awarded as first honor and same as usual bisag knsa ray available na kaila mosaka stage magtaud skong ribbon/medal. Ok rako hindi naman masakitkana tungod kay nasanay nako. Ug gahatag pud mn manok si Papa skong mga advisers everytime na kabalo xa naa koy honor but, never I ever had a picture in those memorable moments skong life. Basta ang importante makab ot nko akong pangandoy. When I was in grade 3 pa, I decided to stop, kay wla koy sapatos. Akong tsinelas gbutangan pag lansang sa ilalom kay bugto man HAHA..tapos required na complete uniform. So, gharvest ni papa iyang mais bisag dli pa tama sa panahon just to buy shoes (tho dili nya suportado akong pag iskol)

Grade 6, I started exploring my capacity as student leader, I ran for the position as Vice President, but I end up being the president for the Supreme Pupil's Government (for some reasons). Those times pud nagsugod ko working student to test my determination ug kung kaya ba gyud nako panindigan akong pangandoy. It was really a memorable experience together with my co-student leaders. Miss ya'll.

Graduation day nko sa elementary, dli na katingalahan wla na pud si papa it's because nasamad iyang tiil dako kaayo sa may lapa². Ending, it was our pastor who escorted me, it is really frustrating seeing your papa at the crowd instead of climbing up on stage with you. Pero lge kay sanay nko it's okhindi naman masakit medyo lang at least nag ihaw cla baboyso mao to grabe ako hilak during my valedictory address HAHAHA

The whole journey nko sa elementary wla ko kasulay nga gtambungan skong papa in any events. I understand because he has his own reasons and I respect it, kaya lang masuya ko sa mga classmates nko nga complete family na present every time not my intention but I do envy you guys. Sometimes, makaingon ko how I wish naa pud ko'y bisag isa lang sa pamilya na moadtu, cguru I'm the happiest Next stop high school, new door of opportunities has been unlocked, and I'm ready to take it all for a cause I studied and worked as well, it's because I'm not sure what might happen in the long run. But it's always my health that hinders me. Uli na pud ko smoa, padayun gyapon skwela tho ako ra isa gapuyo sa balay [naa na diay mi balay sa bario]

Here comes the bigger problem that our family faced. This problem affected me a lot, to the point that Papa decided to cut me off from school [undang na is me]. Nihilak kog taman² pati pagpananghid nko skong teacher nihilak ko. It's because I don't want to see my classmates moving forward to the next year level habang ako mabilin I felt like, this is so unfair. Ako nga gatarung, nganu ako man ang maapektuhan.? Nihawa ko smoa since 2011. Kay xempre mag unsa mn ko? Magminyo? Noooo way!!!!

Nag work ko as kasambahay for 6 months. Akong sweldo akong g tigom para makabalik ko skwela. Ug pila may palad sa ok ok? Naka skwela kog balik. Grade 7!! Gpa iskwela ko skong amo pero nihawa pud ko after few months for some reasons (I'm forever thankful sa ilaha kay nakabalik ko skwela). Good thing naa koy iyaan ug uyuan sila akong ikaduhang mama ug papa sila gagasto skoa pati pud akong mga pinsan nga gahatag skong baon adlaw2 pati na baydanan sa skul for almost five months. Salamat kaayo ina, ama!

November 3, 2012. I didn't expect that a bigger opportunity will knock at my door. Akong ArPan teacher sa hayskul, nangita buddy² kay wla xa kauban for the mean time habang wla pa iya working student. I grabbed the opportunity bahalag temporary lng.

During my junior/senior high school years, ga struggle ko kay ga adjust pa pud ko sa environment, wla koy kaila bisag isa gyud. Nag student leader gyapon ko and I make friends both from org and classmates [arang² na gamay].  Sa makausa pa, I graduated both junior and senior high school nga wla si Papa I cried in my speeches not because I am happy, but because I felt like I failed again and again. Ga ask akong teacher, nganu gusto nmu mag excel sa klase? Isa ra akong tubag, kana tungod kay gusto nko mosaka akong papa sa stagebut I failed to do so

Moving on, college life is never the same as those in junior and senior high school, because the true battle starts here. And I want to take this opportunity to thank the late sir Richard Pernia, for helping me all throughout my SASE journey. Na tungod sa kadako sa score ni Berry Lauron, dli na unta makapasa akong 64 na iskoryes 64 rako sa SASE and it's the final cut-off score for the 2018 SASE EXAM. Thank you so much sir, grabe gyud imu paningkamot para mababaan ang cut-off score, para bisag naa lay isa makasulod sa MSU from EGMNHS, ok naka! You prepared all my papers for the enrollment. You said po, tarung skwela balik² lng dre sa polsci if naa kay mga kakulian.  And yes as I promised, I made it sirand sorry po kay wla ko gaadtuan sa polsci department, and it's too late

My 4 years in college is a long and a tough journey pero murag kagahapon lang.

Gladly, I survived all that, because I have my friends and classmates na always ga extend og help. I also have rare individuals (endangered species ) na one chat away, mga tao nga gapaminaw skong sentiments tho gna HAHA rako nnu but it means a lot to me. You're forever my confidante thank you so much to my college professors/mentors ug sa akong mga resource/cooperating teachers during field study and teaching internship, thank you so much dli ko ka survive sa final requirements if not because of you poand most of all skong forever squad nga magyawyaw sa bago motabang and blockmates [na tud nalang graduation wla class pic] you made my college life memorable and bearable...charezzzz

Someone ask me, wla lge ka gauli sa inyo? Wla ka gna mingaw sa imu Papa? Kung kamingaw lng hisgutan sobra pa dha akong gnabatyag. Pero mag unsa mn ko ddtu? If ba mag uli ko makatabang nako? What about tomorrow? I sacrificed everything for my dreams ug dli ko basta² moundang sa tunga². Tinuod, layo pa kaayo ko, pero layo² na pud ko kung asa ko gkan.

Sa mga tao dha nga maayo kaayo magbuhat² storya, you made me stronger by pushing me to my limitations. Salamat kay tungod ninyo naningkamot ko

To all my teachers in elementary and high school at Kalbay, EGMNHS teachers specially ma'am Ritzel Ende and Sir Andy Boy Opong, college professors, thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and wisdom. You taught us not just theories from books but facts based on real-life situations. I'm forever grateful and indebted

Skong Papa, Pang! Salamat kaayo kay gtudluan ko nimu paano mabuhi nga ako lang. Paano magdesisyon nga ako ra. Paano mahimong independent since then.

Tips:
*For those young individuals who were struggling in their own battles, let me tell you that in every situation there's always a time to pull back and a time to push forward. Learn to rest but never quit. Because quitting means you're doubting your own capabilities, you're beyond what you think you can do. It's just that we tend to rely on kapoy nko! Never try to compete with others, d porket nabilin kas byahe ulahi naka. D' porket hina kas acads b*b* naka. We have our own timeline and instead rushing to the finish line, why not enjoy the process. The slower you reach your goal the more experiences you went through. Kung nay problema naa gyud nay solusyon.

*If you fail, learn to laugh at your own mistakes and failures. Do not overreact or feel pressured, tanan man ta nagkamali. Kaya lang we have different way of reflecting to it. Remember! It's the battle of the fittest. If wla kay motivation? Peras ta HAHA. Cguru it's my greatest strength pud because I am immune to problems ug mga pagsulay. Mokatawa ra gyud ko bisag gahilak HAHAHAHA.

*Friendly advice, surround yourself with friends if wla kay lain source of happiness and strength. Make your classmates as your family kay bisan pag unsa na sila ka seryuso or kabuang they will help you whenever you're down. Lain² na sila ways mag comfort, others may laugh at you while others seriously hugs you. What matters most is that you'll never feel that you're alone.

*If you're that person who can't work under pressure, cannot multitask, and dli baga nawong, sa college ayaw sa pag uyab². I don't want to compare my story to yours, gusto ra nko iingon na i secure sa imu studies. Pero if kaya nmu ipagsabay tanan..goooooesss kung asa ka malipay. Just be reminded of your limitations. If higpit kag parents or ate and kuya, understand them because they have reasons why doing so. Kung kita as student nagkalisod, mas nagkalisod cla pangita kwarta. Basta ako, ang tanan butang naay kanya² na gna tawag perfect timing. Learn to wait, if it's meant for you, it will be yours[In God's perfect timing].

It's not yet the end of my story so I leave it here without ending, because the next chapter is yet to come. CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL GRADUATES OF BATCH HIRAYA 2022
TO MY ELGEND FAMILY
TO MY FRIENDS, SA TANAN NAKONG NAHIMONG HIGALA, SA MGA PA AS IF LNG NA ILA KONG HIGALA OK RAPUD CONGRATULATIONS AND THANK YOU SA MEMORIESFINALLY! WE MADE IT!!! AHOOOOO

Philippine Government / SIM Card Registration Act
July 23, 2022, 07:21:10 PM
Refile and pass the SIM Card Registration bill

Press Release: CitizenWatch Philippines urges the members of the 19th Congress to pass a new version of the SIM Card Registration Act and for the President to certify this as urgent

Earlier this year in the waning days of the previous administration, former President Duterte vetoed the bill even as it had been passed by both Houses of the 18th Congress.

Registration of SIM cards will protect consumers from cyber-goons and criminals operating scams, unsolicited, indecent or obscene messages, bank fraud, libel, anonymous online defamation, trolling, terrorism, and the spread of digital disinformation or fake news.

There has been a marked increase in text scams where unsuspecting users are fooled into divulging sensitive personal information to those who use these to drain money from victim's accounts.

We need this law because of the proliferation of scammers, fraudsters, trolls and disinformation agents who are emboldened by anonymity to do their dark deeds. The fake identities of cybercriminals and trolls allow them to operate wantonly with no fear of being apprehended. Unsuspecting consumers are easy targets of their sophisticated modus-operandi.

Our lawmakers need to step in and correct this anonymity shield abetting criminal activity. Too many Filipinos are falling prey to these fraudsters and online goons. Technology should make our lives better, not worse.

Requiring the registration of SIM cards establishes the identity of users and makes them accountable for everything that they do with their account. That, then, deters perpetrators from committing cybercrimes because they can no longer hide behind false identities.

When SIM cards – which are linked to social media accounts – are registered, those victimizing online shoppers and those fueling confusion, hate and disinformation will know that they can be traced and prosecuted.

Congress must act with urgency on this important measure to protect our citizens from the relentless attack of cybercriminals.

Press Release: Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco met with the officers of the Tourism Promotions Board (TPB) Philippines earlier today to thresh out the concerns and challenges encountered by the agency.  The Secretary sits as Chairman of the Board of the TPB which is the marketing arm of the Department of Tourism (DOT).

Among the topics and issues discussed during the hybrid meeting are the ongoing programs and promotions of the agency, and upcoming domestic and international activities.

Secretary Frasco instructed the officials of the TPB to reach out to the local government units (LGUs) across the country and exhaust all assistance possible in order to assist the tourism-related requirements of the regions,  particularly the lesser-known and underdeveloped destinations so as to equalize opportunities for tourism marketing and promotion. Likewise, Secretary Frasco is keen on strengthening projects and programs granted by the TPB to LGUs all over the country, by exploring tourism areas and communities that could be further improved.

The DOT chief also underscored  the need to maximize the use of Travel App 2.0, an application that highlights key and emerging destinations in the country. The digitalization of tourism products and offerings, she  emphasized, is a priority  under the  Marcos Administration.

Secretary Frasco was joined by Chief of Staff and Undersecretary-designate Atty. Mae Elaine Bathan and Undersecretary-designate Atty. Shereen Gail Pamintuan.

World Daily News / Lt. Gen. Michael Langley
July 22, 2022, 08:30:05 AM
Press Release: Lt. Gen. Michael Langley is set to become the first Black four-star general in the Marines' 246-year history. He will appear before the Senate Armed Services Committee on Thursday and, if confirmed by the Senate, he will lead thousands of U.S. troops in Africa as chief of U.S. Africa Command.

Langley, who is from Shreveport, LA, has served more than three decades in the U.S. Marine Corps. He has served abroad in Afghanistan, Japan, and Somalia. Langley has received multiple advanced degrees in strategic studies from the U.S. Naval War College and the U.S. Army War College. The Louisiana native is one of only six Black generals to serve in the branch.

Increasing diversity in the armed forces, especially among its leadership ranks, has been an ongoing effort for the U.S. military's top brass. More than 70 white men have achieved and earned the highest rank in the Marines, vs. Langley as the sole Black man. More than 80% of generals in all of the U.S. military branches are white, according to research by the Council on Foreign Relations.

Philippine Daily News / EDSA Bus Carousel
July 21, 2022, 03:28:11 PM
IN THE NEWS: The Department of Transportation (DOTr) is looking at possible locations for a large terminal for the EDSA Bus Carousel to avoid congestion and the long queue of commuters in the vicinity of Monumento in Caloocan City.

"We are looking at three areas in Caloocan for the staging area or terminal that is similar to PITX [Parañaque Integrated Terminal Exchange]. One is the PNR Compound in Sangandaan Caloocan, the second is the Victory Liner, which is four kilometers away on the Valenzuela side and the other one is in the Monumento area beside Starbucks restaurant," LTFRB chair Cheloy Garafil said.

"Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista directed us to conduct an ocular inspection in the three areas, and then we can decide if it is feasible to convert them into a staging area," she added.

The EDSA Busway recorded a total ridership of 47,104,197 in 2021, serving an average passenger volume of 129,000 daily. The government tapped Mega Manila Consortium Corporation and ES Transport for the operation of the EDSA Bus Carousel.

Philippine Daily News / Gilas Coach Chot Reyes
July 21, 2022, 01:53:28 PM
Chot says 'not much will change' if Nenad is Gilas head coach

"That's always a possibility but even if he is the head coach, it's not going to give us a naturalized player or the players that we want. Not much is going to change. You're still not going to get the preparation time.

But even if Vucinic is named head coach of Gilas, Reyes believes that there will not be that much difference to where Philippine basketball is situated right now.

The PBA won't adjust its calendar for Vucinic. Neither will the collegiate teams in the country.

Moreover, it is not even sure if the PBA will lend their players to Gilas.

The PBA's only six-time Coach of the Year said that even if he wanted to, it's not his decision to make. It's the powers-that-be in the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas who decides on these matters.

"Yeah, we had discussions about that. Unfortunately, we cannot divulge the content of those discussions," Reyes bared to Play It Right TV.

"That's not my call."

"I'd be lying if it doesn't affect me personally but I'm just trying my best to keep my eye on the big picture," he said.

"And hopefully, all of these things, there's a meaning behind all of this, that there is purpose in this pain. Just continue to choose faith over fear."

Weird and Extreme / Nikola Tesla Prediction

"They laughed at me in 1897 when I told them about the cosmic ray. Fifty years ago they attempted to discredit my discovery of the rotating magnetic field and my system of power transmission by alternating currents. They called me crazy when I predicted the radio and when I sent the first impulse around the world they said it couldn't be done."

Sama shipwrights: Least-known for being gifted
By Nash B. Maulana

BONGAO, Tawi-Tawi—Sama shipwrights here are least-known for being gifted and precisionists, doing the craft without a naval architectural plan.

They build launch vessels, the traditional kumpit unaided by any technical supervision by the better schooled theoretically in this field. "The plan is drawn imaginarily in their head," says Kuyoh Pajiji, the former mayor of Sibutu Island town.

Sama master launch vessel builders Jubail Muyong from Sibutu and Haji Musa Malabong from Sitangkai have built most of the kumpit vessels plying the routes of Zamboanga-Basilan-Sulu-Tawi-Tawi, transporting goods and passengers for decades. Indeed, kumpit has become a part of every life in the islands—be they Muslims, Christians or of the Indigenous People's (IP) Tribes.

Some of the crew or workers on board are from the Visayas, and as many from the Badjao sea-based sub-tribe of Tawi-Tawi.

In Cotabato, launch and ship-sized vessels were also built without naval architecture plans by locally-known self-taught master shipwrights named Sumampao Maido and Gaerlan Lauban in the 1950's through the 70's. Among Maido's heirs Hadji Teng and Ben Sumampao had briefly continued the trade but the age of concrete roads has overtaken the old coast-to-coast sea transport industry in the region.

Pajiji who owns a kumpit, says the locally-built wooden-hulled vessel can be as large in terms of load capacity as to carry 150 tons (150,000 kilograms) of gross buoyant weight.

Provincial Tourism Office head Pershing Tayag said incidents are very few, if any, of sea disasters involving kumpit launches. Also seen very few around are decommissioned old bodies of kumpit launches in Bongao.

Bent to wavelength and amplitude, the keel frames of a kumpit are of curvature form, and in symmetry of shape and weight to maintain a centroid balance from yard to dock—to its sail of clear waters and rough seas. Square formed nails clip the wooden hulls onto lower and upper frame members. G.I. customized bolts and nuts fix the joints along the frame-keel members, to the bow.

A group of Cahavacano carpenters here said they have sub-contracted from master shipwright Jubail Muyong of Sibutu, the building of a medium-size kumpit launch measuring 18 feet wide and 65 feet long from bow to stern.

Pajiji said the ship builders in his hometown build kumpit that is as big as one measuring 27 ft. in width by 80 ft. in length, from bow to stern.

The shipwrights here say building a 65-to-80 ft. long kumpit can run up to one year, and to cost up to P 15 million, including a 500 HP keel-fixed Cummins, an England-Made engine with an F-R hydraulic propelling transmission assembled in Malaysia.

According to a member of the Philippine National Historical Commission, shipwrights from Tawi-Tawi—Muyong from Sibutu, Malabong from Sitangkai and Ustadz Amer Turoganan, a Maranao-born Sama from Bongao—built the balangay boat replica in 41 days, from April to June in 2009 with no naval architectural plans, but based solely on knowledge passed from one generation to another.

Debris of the balangay boat, an archaeological find on display at the Butuan Museum, has been carbon-dated 320 A.D. when exhumed along the shores of Masao (Butuan) in the 1970s.

The modern-day balangay boat made here was previously set out by Filipino artists on a four-year voyage to Sabah, Malaysia from an undisclosed part of the Southern Philippines, and to other parts of Southeast Asia across the waters of the Indo-Pacific Region.

A balangay boat measures three meters wide and 10 meters long from bow to stern, according to Ustadz Amer Turoganan, the shipwright in Bongao.

History / Joseph Smith Founder of Mormon Church
July 19, 2022, 07:20:56 PM
Posted by Dose of History
In 1831 Joseph Smith, the founder of the Mormon church, moved from New York to Kirtland, Ohio, announcing that he had received a vision for God decreeing that all Mormons were to gather and settle there. As followers flocked to Kirtland, they were met with suspicion and hostility.

The tensions between Mormons and non-Mormons in Kirtland would be repeated wherever the rapidly growing Mormon community gathered and settled. Non-Mormon residents feared that the Mormons would take over their local governments and dominate the communities. Non-Mormons also often reacted angrily both to Mormon doctrine declaring that all other Christian denominations were illegitimate and to rumors that the Mormons practiced polygamy. In March 1832 anti-Mormon militants took Smith from his home in Kirkland and tarred and feathered him. Meanwhile anti-Mormon residents in Jackson County, Missouri attacked the Mormon community there and drove it out of the county, into neighboring Clay County.

After the failure of a bank he had established in Kirtland, Smith and the rest of the Mormon community there relocated to the Mormon community in Clay County, Missouri. Tensions escalated after a Mormon leader there declared during a 4th of July speech that a "war of extermination" was impending between Mormons and non-Mormons. Brawls broke out in August as anti-Mormon residents tried to prevent Mormons from voting in the state election. With conflicts and mutual distrust increasing, a few months later the governor of Missouri declared that "The Mormons must be treated as enemies, and must be exterminated or driven from the State." Soon afterwards 17 Mormons were killed when their community was attacked by an anti-Mormon militia, and the Mormon community was forced to flee Missouri.

Seeking a safe haven, the Mormons bought a small town in western Illinois, changing its name from Commerce to Nauvoo. With Smith as its mayor, chief judge, and militia commander, the settlement boomed and within a few years the population of Nauvoo had swelled to over 12,000, making it nearly as populous as Chicago.

Local anti-Mormon sentiment grew as the Mormons became more dominant, and non-Mormons were alarmed by Smith's announcement in 1844 that he intended to run for President of the U.S. The situation came to a boil after Smith ordered the destruction of the presses of a Nauvoo newspaper owned by dissident Mormons, following its publication of an editorial challenging Smith and denouncing polygamy. The destruction of the printing press inflamed anti-Mormon sentiment in Illinois and Governor Thomas Ford had Smith and his brother arrested for inciting a riot. The two men surrendered and were jailed in nearby Carthage. Four days later a mob broke into the jail and murdered them both. Five men were ultimately charged with the murders, but they were all acquitted. Illinois revoked Nauvoo's charter and mob violence against Mormons increased.

Convinced that they needed to find a place they could live safely and peaceably, in 1846 the Mormon community began the great migration that would eventually take them to the Utah territory—a story for another day.

The painting is "Crossing the Mississippi on the Ice," by C. C. A. Christensen, depicting Mormons leaving Nauvoo in February 1846.

Talk of the Town / An Open Letter to Chot Reyes
July 19, 2022, 06:23:08 PM
An Open Letter to Chot Reyes posted on FB page

Dear Coach Chot Reyes,
Cc: Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas - SBP
Cc: Al S. Panlilio
Cc: Manny V Pangilinan
Cc: FIBA Basketball World Cup
Cc: FIBA Asia Cup
Cc: FIBA
Cc: PSC (Philippine Sports Commission)
Cc: Philippine Olympic Committee
Cc: PBA

We cannot deny the fact that you have one of the best international basketball records among local coaches. We certainly remember and will always credit you for how you steered the country to the 2012 William Jones Cup championships; you helped us secure a world cup berth in 2014 by winning a silver medal in the 2013 FIBA Asia Championship, which we hosted at home. These events brought joy to millions of Filipino Basketball fans, including us, thousands of passionate OFW's who watch Gilas games to ease our loneliness from being so far away from our loved ones.

However, those days are over and we kindly ask you to step down and stop living off from your past glories. We would like to remind you of the truth, that your track record as the national team's head coach post-2014 FIBA World Cup has been below average at best. We still remember how you piloted the national team to a seventh-place finish in the 2014 Asian Games where you infamously instructed Marcus Douthit to shoot in the opponent's basket in a desperate attempt to force an overtime. Also,  in your return as head coach in 2017, the Philippines only managed to finish seventh in the FIBA Asia Cup, and of course the multiple losses by huge margins against Australia, including the ugly brawl at the Philippine Arena. Under your recent leadership, zero wins over South Korea, Lebanon, Iran, Australia, and New Zealand. Above all, we will never forget the pain you brought us in the last SEAGAMES when you surrendered our gold medal record to Indonesia.

We understand that you did not apply for the job as you have claimed numerous times, but please listen to the Filipino people and be sensitive enough to hear that the clamor for your resignation continues to grow louder day by day. Please stop ignoring us by shutting off your social media accounts. Please stop telling us that these misfortunes you caused are part of the process that will help us get better. As one of our readers mentioned, you should already be at a polishing stage at this point. Please try to understand that your prime in the international level is over, and show a bit of humility by learning to acknowledge your flaws and your own limitations.

As you said, you were happily retired, and doing your work, enjoying your life, coaching your professional team, but somebody has to do the job. The best person is no longer you, because the Filipino fans deserve better. Please give up your role and enjoy your life with your family and focus on your professional team instead.

If your ulterior motive is to really serve your country, please resign now and give way to someone better.

Sincerely,
Passionate Filipino Basketball fans

Philippine Provinces / Governor Malanyaon to PNP
July 19, 2022, 11:50:36 AM
"𝗟𝗢𝗩𝗘 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗩𝗜𝗡𝗖𝗘, 𝗟𝗢𝗩𝗘 𝗜𝗧𝗦 𝗣𝗘𝗢𝗣𝗟𝗘" -- 𝗚𝗢𝗩 𝗠𝗔𝗟𝗔𝗡𝗬𝗔𝗢𝗡 𝗧𝗘𝗟𝗟𝗦 𝗣𝗢𝗟𝗜𝗖𝗘 𝗜𝗡 𝗕𝗜𝗗 𝗧𝗢 𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗠𝗢𝗧𝗘 𝗣𝗘𝗔𝗖𝗘, 𝗧𝗢𝗨𝗥𝗜𝗦𝗠, 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗔𝗖𝗛𝗜𝗘𝗩𝗘 𝗔 𝗗𝗥𝗨𝗚-𝗙𝗥𝗘𝗘 𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗩𝗜𝗡𝗖𝗘

For the police to execute their duties effectively as frontliners of peace and order, Governor Corazon N. Malanyaon urged them to love first the province and the people they serve.

"You really have to learn to love your job, love the people whom you are serving, and love the province itself," said the Governor during today's security briefing with the officers of the Davao Oriental Police Provincial Office (DOPPO), wherein she made a clear statement urging the security forces to live up to the core values and become the epitome of virtues.

Governor Malanyaon stressed that this guiding principle is meant to act as their foundation in supporting the province's bid for development, particularly on the peace and order campaign, anti-drugs efforts, and even tourism promotion.

"I will aggressively promote our tourism. However, tourism development is vulnerable and dependent on peace and order. And so, let's work together in making this province worth visiting," she told the police officers, emphasizing that many people rely on tourism for their livelihoods-- from the transport sector, farmers and fishermen, restaurants, resorts, and hotels up to the small and big business. To help boost the tourism sector, the Governor asked for the police's help to maintain peace and order, which could drastically influence the province's image.

Meanwhile, during the briefing, Governor Malanyaon also raised her concerns about the resurgence of the illegal drug trade. She said this is another area that needs to be fully addressed, saying that the number of drug incidence in a community is also an indicator of the police efforts.

Having given her guidance, the Governor vowed to work on having a harmonious relationship with the police. "Let's complement each other's efforts to be able to see to it that we attain the peace and order that we always hope for."

Police Colonel Francis Donald Brillante, Officer-In-Charge of the DOPPO, assured the Governor of the police force's support in all of the province's initiatives which are also aligned with their development programs and the police's mandate to protect and serve the people.

He added that they will also abide by the guidance of the Police Regional Office Regional Director Police Brigadier General Benjamin Silo, which is a service that is "Walang Yabang, Walang Abuso, Magserbisyo ng Maayos." By Karen Lou Deloso- PIO| Photos by Eden Jhan Licayan

104 years ago today in 1918, Czar Nicholas II of Russia, his wife Alexandra, their five children, and four of their servants are shot and stabbed to death by Bolshevik revolutionaries.

Nicholas was crowned Emperor of Russia on May 26th 1896. At the time he inherited one of the largest and most powerful empires in the world. However his reign would be plagued with internal and external crises early on. Modernization of the 20th century would lead to the lower classes of Russia clamoring for political reform from the old autocratic system. Officials in his government would be the target of violent activism and assassinations. And in response his government would sometimes harshly respond to protests and provocations.

In 1904 Russia would go to war with Japan and lose an entire fleet in battle. Nicholas would decide to double-down and send their prestigious Baltic fleet across the world. But the Japanese would also destroy this fleet and inflict over 100,000 casualties on the Russians, forcing them to cede territory. The cost and failure of the war was a direct cause of the 1905 Russian Revolution which the Czar's government violently suppressed and would almost completely alienate him from the general population.

The Czar was also affected by a more personal issue too. His son Alexi was born a hemophiliac taking up much of his time and concern. Desperate to heal their son, the royal family turned to a bizarre mystic named Grigori Rasputin who would manipulate them and alienate many of the Czar's closest advisers and noblemen.

The final catalyst to the Czar's downfall would be the horrendous losses and failure in World War One. The February Revolution of 1917 would have the Czar abdicate his throne, including for his sick son. By all accounts, the family was relieved to give up power and avoid politics. They planned to live a comfortable life in exile. The royal family and their loyal servants were imprisoned in the Alexander Palace before being moved to Tobolsk and then Yekaterinburg. As the Russian Civil War escalated, Allied powers intervened and the Bolshevik government lost ground. The Royal family's conditions deteriorated and became harsher. The Soviets would periodically execute servants and guards who were kind to the family. And with Allied forces getting close to their location, direct orders from Vladmir Lenin had forced the family and their remaining four servants to pack their belongings and go into the basement to be moved to another place.

On the dark early morning of July 17th, while the family sat together a group of Bolsheviks entered the room and read them an execution sentence. The Czar and his wife stood in front of their children and protested what was about to be done. Pistols were drawn and unloaded on the family. The Czar and his wife were killed immediately by the bullets and shielding their children. The noise from all the gunshots concerned the Bolsheviks and smoke covered the entire room making it difficult to see. The children and servants laid wounded and crying. The Soviets walked around the smokey room, stabbing and beating the survivors to death. And eventually shooting each of them in the head to ensure they were gone. The execution lasted a total of 20 minutes. The location and disposal of their bodies was a subject of great mystery for the next century.

With their deaths, one of the most important political dynasties of the last 300 years was extinguished. Fearful of the family being made martyrs, the Soviet Government denied the family was dead for decades. There were also impostors who claimed they were the missing royal family. Most of the remains were found in 1979, and the last two in 2007. After the fall of the Soviet Union, the new Russian government would formally rebury the remains of the royal family. They would also open a murder investigation in 1993 but failed to find any of the executors still alive. Nicholas, his wife, and their children are formally canonized as saints by the Russian Orthodox Church.

Talk of the Town / Death Penalty in the Philippines
July 18, 2022, 05:29:01 PM
'HINDI SILA BASTA-BASTA MAGPAPATAW NG DEATH PENALTY'

By Philippine Star: Senator Ronald "Bato" Dela Rosa on Monday assured the public that there is nothing to worry about implementing death penalty amid concerns on the country's "flawed" justice system.

In an interview with ANC broadcast journalist Karen Davila on Monday, Dela Rosa said that the death penalty is "allowed" under the Philippine Constitution and he does not see any problem with it.

However, according to Article III Bill of Rights, Section 19 of the Philippine 1987 Constitution, the death penalty shall not be imposed until Congress provides for it in the future for compelling reasons involving heinous crimes.

The Constitution further states that death penalties already imposed must be reduced to "reclusion perpetua" or permanent imprisonment.

Davila pointed out the possibility of the death penalty putting the poor at a disadvantage because of the lack of access to legal assistance and the Philippines' "flawed" justice system.

Dela Rosa, who recently filed a Senate bill seeking to revive the death penalty on convicted large-scale drug traffickers, nonetheless refuted this statement, saying that he still believes in the Philippine courts.

"Sampal 'yan sa ating mga korte 'pag sabihan nating inefficient sila o hindi nila alam ang ginagawa nila...Hindi sila basta-basta magpapataw ng death penalty," Dela Rosa said.

USA and Canada / Roe vs Wade
June 25, 2022, 01:23:12 AM
The U.S. Supreme Court has overturned its 1973 landmark Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion nationwide for nearly 50 years. The ruling came in the case of Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization.

The case challenged Mississippi's 15-week abortion ban, and whether it was unconstitutional. It was enacted in 2018 but was blocked after a federal court challenge.

The state of Mississippi asked the high court to uphold its law and directly challenged the precedent in Roe and the 1992 Casey v. Planned Parenthood that held that states cannot ban pre-viability abortions, those done before a child can survive outside the womb.

Friday's outcome is expected to lead to abortion bans in roughly half the states.

The decision, unthinkable just a few years ago, was the culmination of decades of efforts by pro-life advocates.

In a statement, Franklin Graham, president, and CEO of Samaritan's Purse and the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association said: "The United States Supreme Court just announced one of the most significant rulings in my lifetime—officially voting to overturn the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision because it was 'egregiously wrong from the start,' as stated by Justice Samuel Alito. The radical left is calling for a 'night of rage,' pregnancy centers are already being vandalized and attacked, and our U.S. Supreme Court justices are being targeted with threats and intimidation.

"Roe v. Wade, passed 49 years ago, has resulted in the deaths of over 63 million innocent children in this country. Sadly, this decision is not an end to abortion—it pushes the battle back to the states," Graham continued. "My prayer is that every state will enact protections for children in the womb and that our nation will value life and recognize the rights of our most vulnerable."

PHILIPPINE AIR FORCE MIGHTY C-130 HERCULES PIONEERS AND FACT RECORDS

The workhorse of the Philippine Air Force (PAF) combat airlift fleet, the Lockheed Martin C-130 Hercules Military medium lift turboprop aircraft have been in service for almost 50 years (49 years to be exact) serving the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Filipino people.

It started in the 70s when President Ferdinand Marcos Sr. funded the acquisition of brand new C-130 Hercules for the Philippine government to replace its fleet of Fairchild C-123 Provider transport/cargo twin-engine aircraft.

Philippine History / Japanese-occupied Philippines
June 24, 2022, 04:20:40 PM
#Today in History by Indio Historian
This day in 1943, in the Japanese-occupied Philippines, the Preparatory Committee for Philippine Independence (PCPI) convened for the purpose of drafting a new constitution. PCPI was formed by the Japanese Military Administration in the Philippines.

Upon its capture of Manila without resistance in January 1942, the Japanese immediately took control of the city. Certain members of the Quezon cabinet were asked personally by Pres. Manuel Quezon to stay behind to soften the blow of the occupation.

Gen. Masaharu Homma became the Japanese military commander who headed a Provisional Council of State, composed of the Philippine Commonwealth leaders who stayed behind. From here, the Philippine Executive Commission was formed, which acted as Cabinet for the Japanese commander.

On December 8, 1942, exactly a year after the Pearl Harbor attack and Japan's subsequent invasion of the Philippines, the Japanese established the Kapisanan sa Paglilingkod sa Bagong Pilipinas (KALIBAPI), a party formed to replace all political parties in the Philippines.

Recognizing that American influence remained strong among Filipinos, Japanese Premier Hideki Tojo publicly declared several times from late 1942 to 1943 that Philippine independence would be granted to Filipinos—something that the United States had not yet given.

This worried Pres. Manuel Quezon, who led the Philippine Commonwealth government-in-exile in Washington, D.C., as Tojo's verbal promise of independence was already being acted upon, while the U.S. prioritized Europe over the Philippines in World War II.

The drafting of the constitution was closely monitored by the Japanese. Three months later, it would be submitted to the KALIBAPI convention and unanimously ratified, with the Japanese puppet government, the Second Philippine Republic inaugurated.

While being President of a Japanese-sponsored republic, Pres. Jose P. Laurel did his best for the welfare of Filipinos. For instance, instead of issuing an executive order directing Filipinos to go to war against the Allied forces as commanded, he only declared "a state of war."

At the start of the Philippine liberation from Japanese control in 1944, Gen. Douglas MacArthur issued a proclamation nullifying all laws issued by the Philippine Executive Commission and the Second Philippine Republic. This was seconded by the Supreme Court on September 17, 1945.

June 19, 1867: Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian, Emperor of Mexico, is executed by firing squad.

In 1861, the liberal Mexican Benito Juarez became president of a country in financial ruin, and he was forced to default on his debts to European governments. In response, France, Britain, and Spain sent naval forces to Veracruz to demand reimbursement. Britain and Spain negotiated with Mexico and withdrew, but France, ruled by Napoleon III, decided to use the opportunity to carve a dependent empire out of Mexican territory. Late in 1861, a well-armed French fleet stormed Veracruz, landing a large French force and driving President Juarez and his government into retreat. Austrian Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian was installed as Emperor of Mexico by French Emperor Napoleon III in 1864.

Certain that French victory would come swiftly in Mexico, 6,000 French troops under General Charles Latrille de Lorencez set out to attack Puebla de Los Angeles, a small town in east-central Mexico. From his new headquarters in the north, Juarez rounded up a rag-tag force of loyal men and sent them to Puebla. Led by Texas-born General Ignacio Zaragoza, the 2,000 Mexicans fortified the town and prepared for the French assault. On May 5, 1862, Lorencez drew his army, well-provisioned and supported by heavy artillery, before the city of Puebla and began his assault from the north. The battle lasted from daybreak to early evening, and when the French finally retreated they had lost nearly 500 soldiers to the fewer than 100 Mexicans killed.

Although not a major strategic victory in the overall war against the French, Zaragoza's victory at Puebla represented a great moral victory for the Mexican government and symbolized the country's ability to defend its sovereignty against threat by a powerful foreign nation. Today, Mexicans celebrate the anniversary of the Battle of Puebla as Cinco de Mayo, a national holiday in Mexico. Six years later, under pressure from the newly reunited United States, France withdrew. Abandoned in Mexico, Emperor Maximilian was captured by Juarez' forces and on June 19, 1867, executed.

History / Sumerians Invented System of Time
June 24, 2022, 05:47:28 AM
Sumerians Looked to the Heavens as They Invented the System of Time... And We Still Use it Today. One might find it curious that we divide the hours into 60 minutes and the days into 24 hours - why not a multiple of 10 or 12? Put quite simply, the answer is because the inventors of time did not operate on a decimal (base-10) or duodecimal (base-12) system but a sexagesimal (base-60) system. For the ancient Sumerian innovators who first divided the movements of the heavens into countable intervals, 60 was the perfect number. The number 60 can be divided by 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, 12, 15, 20, and 30 equal parts. Moreover, ancient astronomers believed there were 360 days in a year, a number which 60 fits neatly into six times. The Sumerian Empire did not last. However, for more than 5,000 years the world has remained committed to their delineation of time.

History / Captain Charlie Minnigerode
June 22, 2022, 10:46:29 PM
Charlie Minnigerode ran away from home at age 16 and joined the Confederate army. His father, Charles Minnigerode Sr., was a German immigrant, the Rector of St. Paul's Church in Richmond, one of the most prominent and influential clergymen in the South, and (incidentally) the man who introduced America to Christmas trees. Charlie Jr. earned a commission and became an aide-de-camp to General Fitzhugh Lee.

On the morning of April 9 at Appomattox, just hours before General Robert E. Lee would surrender the army, Charlie was shot by a Federal sharpshooter. The minie ball passed through his chest and Charlie fell from his horse, fracturing his head in the fall. Fitz Lee dismounted and saw that the wound was fatal. Though grieved by the loss of his trusted aide, in the emergency of battle he had to leave him behind.

As Charlie lay dying, he took out a pencil and wrote a poignant letter to his mother. "My Darling Mother. I am dying but I have fallen where I expected to fall. Our cause is defeated but I do not live to see the end of it. I suffer agonies, would to God I could die calmly but – In all things I must see His will be done. My greatest regret in leaving this world is to leave you and the rest of the dear ones. The younger children will be more comforting to you than I have been but none of them will love you more." He pinned the letter to his chest and awaited his fate.

A passing Federal soldier saw Charlie writhing in pain, cut a button off of his uniform as a souvenir, then continued on his way. A short time later a Federal officer passed. Charlie hailed him and begged the officer to put him out of his misery. When the officer refused, Charlie asked to borrow his pistol. The officer again refused, recalling later that before leaving, "I told him to say a prayer and perhaps some good would come out of it."

For young Charlie Minnigerode, the third time was a charm. A Federal surgeon came upon him and believing the young man had a chance to survive, had him taken to a field hospital in Farmville. There Charlie recovered, after having been repeatedly left for dead.

Sadly, fate would not deny Charlie a tragic end. Suffering from what we now call PTSD, and depressed by financial reverses, in 1888, Charlie committed suicide at age 42. But after being left for dead on the Appomattox battlefield and before his untimely death, Charles Minnigerode Jr. went on to marry and father seven children, among them Lucy Minnigerode, founder of United States Public Health Services Nursing Corps, US Army Colonel Fitzhugh Lee Minnigerode, and the painter Marietta Minnigerode Andrews.

The photo is of Captain Minnigerode after the war, in the uniform he was wearing on the day he was wounded, with the bullet hole and bloodstains visible.

Charles Minnigerode Jr. was born on June 22, 1845, one hundred seventy-seven years ago today.

History / The Boxer Rebellion
June 22, 2022, 04:28:17 PM
June 20, 1900: "In response to widespread foreign encroachment upon China's national affairs, Chinese nationalists launch the so-called Boxer Rebellion in Peking. Calling themselves I Ho Ch'uan, or "the Righteous and Harmonious Fists," the nationalists occupied Peking, killed several Westerners, including German ambassador Baron von Ketteler, and besieged the foreign legations in the diplomatic quarter of the city.

By the end of the 19th century, the Western powers and Japan had forced China's ruling Qing dynasty to accept wide foreign control over the country's economic affairs. In the Opium Wars, popular rebellions, and the Sino-Japanese War, China had fought to resist the foreigners, but it lacked a modernized military and suffered millions of casualties. In 1898, Tzu'u Hzi, the dowager empress and an anti-imperialist, began supporting the I Ho Ch'uan, who were known as the "Boxers" by the British because of their martial arts fighting style. The Boxers soon grew powerful, and in late 1899 regular attacks on foreigners and Chinese Christians began.

On June 20, 1900, the Boxers, now more than 100,000 strong and led by the court of Tzu'u Hzi, besieged the foreigners in Peking's diplomatic quarter, burned Christian churches in the city, and destroyed the Peking-Tientsin railway line. As the Western powers and Japan organized a multinational force to crush the rebellion, the siege of the Peking legations stretched into weeks, and the diplomats, their families, and guards suffered through hunger and degrading conditions as they fought to keep the Boxers at bay. On August 14, the international force, featuring British, Russian, American, Japanese, French, and German troops, relieved Peking after fighting its way through much of northern China.

Due to mutual jealousies between the powers, it was agreed that China would not be partitioned further, and in September 1901, the Peking Protocol was signed, formally ending the Boxer Rebellion. By the terms of agreement, the foreign nations received extremely favorable commercial treaties with China, foreign troops were permanently stationed in Peking, and China was forced to pay $333 million dollars as penalty for its rebellion. China was effectively a subject nation." - history.com

Philippine History / Luis Taruc and Hukbalahap
June 21, 2022, 09:59:06 PM
On June 21, 1913, Luis Taruc was born in Pampanga. A devout Christian who believed that he became "born again" of the people, Taruc regards himself as one of the founding members of the Partido Sosyalista ng Pilipinas when, during his high school years, fellow Kapampangan Pedro Abad Santos invited him to join the said organization. Taruc had professed multiple times to be a "Christian Democratic Socialist", not a communist, rejecting the idea of aligning with Russian Bolshevism, and Chinese Maoism, as well as predating so-called "democratic socialists" which found their provenance from the 1970s.

In the 1930s, when the Partido Komunista ng Pilipinas (PKP-1930) merged with the socialists, Abad Santos was elected vice chairman while Crisanto Evangelista, returning from exile, was elected chairman of the new organization. It was only a matter of time before Taruc's divorce with the Partido Komunista ng Pilipinas (PKP) and the Popular Front. Urged as early as 1941 by Abad Santos to organize against a coming Japanese threat, Taruc became one of the founders of the Hukbong Bayan Laban sa Hapon (Hukbalahap) by March 1942, of which he became its military department chairman (Supremo). Vicente Lava, meanwhile, was elected their general secretary.

Taruc's attitude towards communism showed during the Second World War, when Huks (as members of the Hukbalahap were also called) fought not only Japanese and Americans alike, but also fellow Filipinos. Even among American circles, he was regarded as "more socialist than pure communist." Taking in mind that the Soviet Union was accepted by the Allied Powers as a partner against the Axis, Taruc also accepted communists in their ranks, but only for the purpose of fighting "fascism."

True enough, Huk membership appeared to represent a broad base of the population, without necessarily having to be communist. In Taruc's own estimate, he placed communist members to be at "two percent" of their entire organization. Meanwhile, one estimate placed the Hukbalahap fighting strength at around 20,000, making it one of the more organized guerrilla forces in the entire Philippines.

Taruc also disagreed with communist leaders among the Hukbalahap in terms of overall strategy, becoming as popular as being "anti-American" as he was "anti-Japanese" in his activities, even as the guerrilla group was named to be an armed force against Japan. A determined Japanese offensive against Huk operations at Arayat in September 1942 greatly affected Taruc's conduct of guerrilla warfare. Besides improving their intelligence network, Taruc further divided his units into smaller groups called "Barrio United Defense Corps."

During the Allied liberation of the Philippines in the period 1944-1945, Huks took the opportunity of having their own version, freeing towns and establishing order as they went. As for the people of these towns, it apparently mattered little who got first to liberate them than when their freedoms were restored.

After the war, the Hukbalahap was formally dissolved and turned into a Veterans' Association with Casto Alejandrino as chairman. The communist segment, meanwhile, was quite eager to participate in the 1946 elections carrying the banner of the once outlawed Communist Party of the Philippines. This became the "Democratic Alliance", of which Taruc became a minority member. Arguing to drop any hint of communist ideology in the campaign, he believed that they could win seats in the postwar Filipino government by getting to the heart of issues such as agrarian reform and economic prosperity. Instead, Taruc was overshadowed by the communist leaders.

Enjoying the confidence of incumbent President Sergio Osmeña, Sr., who in releasing Taruc and other Huk leaders from American prisons earned criticism from anti-communist groups, Taruc and five others were elected to the House of Representatives. Unfortunately for them, the diplomatic Osmeña was defeated with a margin of 200,000 votes by Liberal Party candidate Manuel Roxas. Pledging to end the Huk threat "in 60 days," the Roxas administration arranged for the removal of Democratic Alliance representatives by accusing them of electoral fraud and terrorism.

Taruc would later lament that while in Japan, the country he fought against during the Pacific War, socialists gained a significant role in government (the 1947 Japanese elections saw the Japan Socialist Party win 143 of 468 seats in the Diet), the Philippines could not even lift their restrictions against socialist candidates.

Shunned by the independent Filipino government, Taruc reorganized the Huk movement into the Hukbong Mapagpalaya ng Bayan (HMB). Despite attempts to deescalate the conflict, including Taruc's acceptance of amnesty from President Elpidio Quirino on his birthday (June 21, 1948), the HMB threat continued until Taruc's unconditional surrender on May 17, 1954, during the administration of Ramon Magsaysay, himself a wartime guerrilla. Eventually, Taruc was given a life sentence.

Teodoro M. Locsin described Taruc in a May 1949 article as follows: "Seeing Taruc for the first time, I thought he was a government clerk, with some petty complaint, until he gave his name. He was humbled, unobtrusive; he seemed like a man other men usually pushed around. He talked softly, in a low voice."

On September 10, 1968, President Ferdinand Marcos, Sr. granted clemency for Taruc and Tausug freedom fighter Hadji Kamlon, among other prisoners. While later opposed to the imposition of Martial Law, Taruc nonetheless commended the reforms undertaken by the Marcos administration: "By 1972, Marcos declaring martial law practically adopted all what I had been fighting for since 1932." He also became a consultant on agrarian reform to Secretary Conrado Estrella. In his later years, Taruc would blame the "dogma" of communists for the failure of the armed movement.

Taruc died on May 4, 2005, convinced of his stand that he was "Filipino first, socialist second." The Luis Taruc Freedom Park in San Luis, Pampanga was erected in his honor. Learn more about the movement: https://history-ph.blogspot.com/2014/11/alternative-parties-in-philippines_10.html

History / Maximilian is executed by Mexican forces
June 20, 2022, 08:36:10 AM
155 years ago today in 1867, the Emperor of Mexico, Maximilian is executed by Mexican forces.

In the end of 1860 and the beginning of 1861, the United States began to experience the largest political crisis in their history. As states began to leave the Union, their southern neighbor Mexico was also in turmoil. Liberal and Conservative factions had been in a civil war since 1857. Liberal forces led by Benito Juárez eventually won the war on December 22, 1860 and formally took control of the government in January 1861. However, many conservative generals and nobility refused to surrender and engaged in guerrilla warfare and assassinations.

European empires eagerly paid attention to the political turmoil in the Americas. They correctly wagered that the United States would be unable to enforce their Monroe Doctrine while in a civil war. This doctrine was enacted in 1823 by President James Monroe and officially stated "...that the American continents, by the free and independent condition which they have assumed and maintain, are henceforth not to be considered as subjects for future colonization by any European powers."

The Mexican government was in severe monetary debt to France, Spain, and Britain. And to disrupt the new hostile liberal government taking over, they began to call on repayments that bankrupted Mexico. President Benito Juárez put a pause on making these payments, prompting these three empires to send troops to occupy the country and support Conservative factions.

As early as 1859, Mexican Nobility and conservatives wanted to restore a monarchy to resist liberal reforms. The Habsburg family ruled over Mexico from 1521 to 1821, and Mexican conservatives enticed Ferdinand Maximilian, the younger brother of the Austrian Emperor Francis Joseph, to become a monarch. He refused at first but eventually agreed in 1863 after French troops and conservatives retook most of the country. In response to this, Britain and Spain condemned the imperialism and pulled out their military units in Mexico.

To the surprise of Mexican conservatives who empowered him, the 30 year old emperor supported many of the liberal reforms. However, many Mexicans refused to recognize his authority and his ~3-year reign was violently contested. After the United States finally finished up their civil war in 1865, they applied diplomatic pressure on France to leave and armed the liberals with war materials. French troops left Mexico and Maximilian's regime was in a desperate situation, eventually having to flee their seat of power in Mexico City.

Maximilian still had loyal Mexicans and Europeans fighting with him against all odds. His forces would be pushed into the city of Santiago de Querétaro and be placed under siege. On May 15th the city fell and the Emperor attempted to escape through republican lines with a loyal hussar cavalry brigade. He was captured and following a court-martial, he was sentenced to death. Despite heavy internal and external pressure to spare his life, Benito Juarez refused to commute the sentence to send a strong message to foreign governments.

Maximilian's supporters devised an escape plan requiring him to shave his notorious facial hair. However, Maximilian would not go through with it because he felt that shaving his beard to avoid recognition would ruin his dignity. Maximilian and his two loyal Generals Miramón and Mejía would be killed by firing squad on the early morning of June 19th. His last words were:

"I forgive everyone, and I ask everyone to forgive me. May my blood, which is about to be shed, be for the good of the country. Viva Mexico, viva la independencia!

WHY THE A-29B SUPER TUCANO?

The primary attack wing of the Philippine Air Force (PAF) is the 15th Strike Wing.

The A-29B "Super Tucano" turboprop attack aircraft is built for the 15th Strike Wing mission "To conduct counterinsurgency and special warfare operations."

It has been clear for a number of decades, that close air support (CAS) is a decisive factor in dealing with insurgency in the Philippines.

It's also obvious for a long time that the counterinsurgency (COIN) turboprop aircraft is a very effective close air support weapon in dealing with the fight against terrorists in the country.

The A-29B Super Tucano's global track record is clear; and equally clear was the fact that it was the right tool for the 15th Strike Wing of the Philippine Air Force and get into the hands to empower their ground operations against the New People's Army (NPA) and the Abu Sayyaf Group.

The Super Tucano is affordable, light, and durable- just what you need to fight enemy groud forces. They have long loiter time and can stay close to the fight. A practical young attack aircraft that has a $1000 Cost Per Flight Hour (CPFH) priced tag with a "Too little for too much," reputation.

They are interoperable in a very close-knit way with operations on the ground. A highly maneuverable light attack aircraft able to operate in high temperatures and rugged terrain.

This turboprop attack aircraft has a combat radius of 300 nautical miles, can reach speeds up to 367 mph and hits ranges up to 720 nautical miles. Its range of 300 nautical miles positions the aircraft for effective attacks within urban environments or other more condensed combat circumstances.

There are a variety of respects in which A-29s can change the equation when it comes to counterinsurgency.

First and foremost, they can save lives. If overhead fire support is able to identify and attack pockets of enemy fighters, fewer ground troops have to enter into enemy fire. Also, an overhead asset of this kind can be an intelligent node able to send targeted information and data regarding troop movements.

The USAF also recommends the A-29 in the Afghan war because the A-10 is so expensive to operate. Why operate a gasoline monster and a millionaires aircraft to maintain if you have an A-29 who can do the same job of the A-10?

The Light Attack Aircraft with 12 years service with thousands of combat flight hours. Proven record of success with 15 Air Forces around the world and growing.

The A-29B Super Tucano is the worldwide choice for close air support!

History / Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus
June 19, 2022, 07:10:59 PM
Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus was born in 519 BCE, under the rule of Tarquin, the final and tyrannical King of Rome. Tarquin was removed from power when Cincinnatus was still a boy. His first appearance in history saw him defending his son, Caeso, who regularly assaulted plebeians who took part in marches. When capital charges were raised against him and he fled to Etruria, Cincinnatus was forced to sell most of his property to pay his debts and was left with a small farm.
In 460 BCE, Cincinnatus was elected consul. A patrician by birth, he opposed the plebeians efforts to gain political power. His year as consul was marked with struggles between the patricians and plebs, with little productivity. At the end of the year he retired to his farm.

LGU Philippines / Missile System Philippines
June 19, 2022, 10:22:06 AM
With the recent news from MaxDefense stating that Japan is offering assistance to the Philippines so the latter can develop its own military industrial capacity, one product that comes to mind is the Hayabusa Class.

A very good force multiplier that can act as a fast moving shore-based missile system (instead of a Frontline combat asset).

Pfc. David Kenyon Webster E (Easy) Company, 2nd Battalion, 506th PIR- 101st Airborne Division poses for the camera with the local population in Eindhoven, 18 September, 1944, The Netherlands.

Webster was born 2 June, 1922, in New York. While studying at Harvard Uni, he enlisted and volunteered for the paratroopers in 1942. He was sent to Camp Toccoa, Georgia, and placed initially in F Company, 506th PIR, but made his first combat jump on D-Day with HQ Company of the regiment's 2nd battalion. He was wounded a few days later and evacuated to England.

Wanting to see more action in combat, he applied for a transfer to Easy Co. and joined them when they returned from Normandy.

He jumped into Holland on September 17th, 1944, as part of Op Market Garden. He was shot in the leg while taking part in the crossroads fighting on "The Island" near Randwijk on Oct 5. He was again evacuated to England and rejoined Easy in Feb, 1945.

Excerpt from Chapter 2 of Parachute Infantry by David Kenyon Webster (in the vicinity of Eindhoven):

"On the road, on the road!" Rader cried. "Let's go." I stood up, buckled my cartridge belt, and put the bayonet on my rifle.

"Five yards between men. Get a move on, Webster!" I fell in behind some men from F Company who were moving out ahead of us. It was nice to have somebody between me and the enemy.

We walked briskly east on the sandy path through the pine trees until we reached the main road, which ran north and south from Eindhoven to Arnhem. Half a mile away, we saw the tile roofs and big steeple of the village of Son, our initial objective. The 1st Battalion had to secure the jump field for glider landings and aerial resupply and hold the bridge over the Wilhelmina Canal at Son while the 2nd and 3rd Battalions went south to Eindhoven.

Nobody came out to greet us at Son. Silent and deserted, the village had an ominous air about it that made me click my rifle off safety. I eyed all the windows of the houses ahead. A rustling of paper flashed through the air high above me. Ignoring it, I continued to follow close after F Company.

"Jesus Christ, Webster!"
Rader exclaimed. "Don't you know what this is?"
I shook my head without taking my eyes off the houses. Something was going to happen very soon, I could tell, and I didn't like it.
"That's an 88."
"Oh? Didn't sound like one to me."
"Wise up, boy."
"Hell."

Evidently the same cannon that had sent the airbursts, killed the crew chief, and knocked down one or two planes was still in action, probably near the canal bridge. The thought of it failed to worry me, for I was intent only on staying close to F Company. As the lead scout in E Company I was now the connecting point between the two units. I was more afraid of an ambush in the village than of the 88. I knew that the civilians wouldn't be lying low if they didn't expect a battle. They knew before any soldiers when a battle was brewing. I began to sweat freely. We approached an intersection in the middle of town.

"Go left, go left!" my platoon leader shouted. A former noncom who had won a battlefield commission in Normandy, he was dark, sturdy, and sensible. His name was Lieutenant Hudson. "Go left!" he shouted again.
F Company went straight down the road. I turned left with nobody in front of me. Edging over close to the houses, with my rifle at my hip, ready to fire, I slowed down to an invalid's walk.

"Faster! Get a move on!"

Oh, goddamn you, I thought. Goddamn all you officers. I'm out here to draw fire, and you want me to run right into it. I stepped out at a quicker gait and, following the road as it curved to the left and then to the right, passed beyond the village. A bridge over a small creek called the Dommel River lay ahead. I looked at it and around it and then beyond it–and stopped cold. There, a hundred yards beyond the bridge by the side of the road, near a stone barn, were three Germans. The one in the center squatted behind a machine gun, with the others close beside him. All of them waved to me in greeting.

You'll be sorry, I thought, you sons of bitches.
Grasping my rifle by the upper hand guard and the small of the stock, I flung it above my head parallel to the ground as a signal for the men behind me: Enemy in sight! In one second, I had made the motion, yanked the rifle down to my shoulder, and aimed at the machine gunner. I wanted to kill him first, because he was the most dangerous.

The Germans continued to wave. Evidently they thought we were German paratroopers who had come to reinforce them. My eyesight was better than theirs, for I could tell a German right away by his stance, which was utterly unlike that of an American soldier, but I was not as relaxed as they were. Tense with nervousness, I leveled on the machine gunner's chest, winced, and pulled the trigger.

The bullet cracked above the German's head, and before I could fire another round, all three men had disappeared behind the barn. I cursed myself. An enemy machine gun fired a short burst to my left. It was not aimed at me, I knew, but my brief heroics were over. I jumped behind the bridge. Some shooting, I thought, crouching close to the earth. I am the world's worst shot. Never could shoot a good goddamn.

On Sep 9, 1961, Webster took off on a shark fishing trip from the Santa Monica pier in his boat the Tusitala. He never returned back to shore.
