Shirtless in Rod Laver Arena at 1:38 Monday morning, Novak Djokovic screamed with release and delight in the direction of his supporters. And who could begrudge him the celebration?

It had required five sets and the longest Grand Slam men’s singles final in history, but Djokovic finally managed to win his third straight Grand Slam singles title on a Sunday night that turned into a Monday morning in Melbourne. Djokovic did it by defeating the same determined but ultimately frustrated opponent, Rafael Nadal, in an Australian Open final that will rank as one of the greatest matches in the long history of tennis.

Djokovic, the No. 1 seed, required a record 5 hours and 53 minutes to defeat the second-seeded Nadal 5-7, 6-4, 6-2, 6-7, 7-5. - source: NY Times

The vice president of Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP)-Bohol Chapter and dean of the University of Bohol Criminology Department dodged death in a broad daylight attempt.

Lawyer Dodelon Sabijon, 39, was just about five meters away from his office at the second floor of Sarabia and Torralba Bldg. along CPG Avenue in Tagbilaran City a few minutes past eight o'clock yesterday morning when an unidentified man fired at him from the lower part of the stairway.

Sabijon was already on the 13th of the 16 steps of the stairway to the second floor of the building when the gun man fired the first shot, hitting him on the back of the iliac region and the bullet went through the lower left portion of the abdomen.

Sabijon hurriedly turned left straight towards his office. The gunman pursued and tried to catch up on him.

Jun Arabiano and Armand Cabaral, the carpenters commissioned to do some repairs in the office, said they were fixing something by the doorside when they heard a gunfire shortly before noticing Sabijon coming in hurriedly.

Cabaral saw a man firing at Sabijon from behind. But the lawyer was already inside the office when the gunshot hit the glass door.

They had no idea then which shot hit the lawyerâ€"the one they heard earlier or the one that they saw hitting the glass door.

Cabaral said Sabijon instructed him, his law firm partnerâ€"lawyer Josie Cempron, and the office staff to close and lock the door right away because a man has just shot him.

Cabaral immediately closed the door, but no longer managed to lock it.

Cabaral said Sabijon grabbed him and they crawled towards the lavatory near the comfort room and hid behind him, saying they need to call the police.

The carpenter struggled to get away from Sabijon's grip in the arms and sought cover behind the lavatory, while Sabijon and Cempron went inside the comfort room to hide.

Cabaral heard Sabijon and Cempron having a hard time contacting the police through their cellphones while inside the comfort room and later opted to call someone and asked that person to contact the TARSIER 117 and relayed the incident.

Sabijon was already rushed by TARSIER 117 to Ramiro Community Hospital when responding police team led by SPO1 Anecito Rulona and Police Inspector Adriano Bacus arrived the crime scene.

The Provincial Public Safety Company later came to help in the hot pursuit.

Arabiano, Cabral, and the office staff told investigators that they heard two bursts of gunfire at an interval of ten seconds. The second one was the one that broke the glass door.

Cabaral said he saw the gunman observing by the doorway for about two minutes before leaving, still holding the gun with his right hand while clipping it in the left armpit.

He said the gunman who was already about 40 years old had light build, dark complexion, about five feet and three-four inches tall, with straight black hair, broad face and large nose.

Cabaral said the gunman was wearing a black jacket, maong pants and shoes, and was bringing a small sling bag.

He said he could recognize that the gunman's firearm was a cal. 45 pistol.

He said the gunman must have thought that they had locked the door, that's why he just stayed at the doorway and no longer attempted to pursue inside.

The security guard in the nearby building and other witnesses said they saw another man waiting on a motorcycle along the road and suspected that he must be the look-out of the gunman because he kept on looking around and was uneasy.

In fact, he hurriedly left with a man that got out from the building--whom they later realized must be the gunman--almost leading to an accident.

In the one-month period that they have been doing repair in Sabijon's office, they had not seen the gunman yet prior to the incident, Cabaral said.

BALER, Aurora -- Senator Edgardo Angara urged Department of Public Works and Highways to fast-track the construction of a bypass-road parallel to the earth dike of the Canili-Diayo dams in nearby Ma. Aurora town as he warned of “disastrous consequences” if overloaded trucks continue to ply the dike in defiance of the 10-ton load limit imposed by the government.

Angara, a native of Baler, said DPWH Secretary Rogelio Singson should prioritize government funding for a P700-million bypass road so truckers would no longer use  the dike in going to and from the province and prevent it from further damage.

He said Singson has assured funding for the 4.1-kilometer proposed bypass road not only once but four times and must make good on his promise to spare the communities lying around the dike from the specter of severe flooding in the event the dike collapses.

“During the budget hearings of the DPWH in 2011 and 2012 and in hearings in the Senate, Secretary Singson assured funding for the bypass road and he must release the money for the project as soon as possible,” he said. - journal.com.ph

LAOAG CITY, Jan. 26 (PIA) â€" The provincial government’s education program for public schoolchildren continues to send more poor students to various school levels under the Millennium Development Goals program.

Based on the Provincial Education Department’s records, close to 10,000 schoolchildren were given funding support for 2011. The PED was created in 2010 as an education program for the poor.

Under the program, the PED seeks to provide a complete primary education among children in poor communities.

BAGUIO CITY, Jan. 26 (PIA) -- The Presidential Commission on Good Government (PCGG) has facilitated the recovery of over P93 billion of ill-gotten wealth and 291 cases pending in court which involves about P232 billion since its establishment in 1986 up to June 30,2011.

This was reported by PCGG Commissioner Maita Chan-Gonzaga, in a Public Forum on Good Governance here Wednesday, in partnership with the St. Louis University (SLU) Department of Political Science - School of Humanities.

In presenting the PCGG accomplishments, Gonzaga also reported that the commission also worked for the recovery and transferred to the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) 1,650 hectares of agricultural land which were distributed to farmer beneficiaries in Cavite and Laguna, while another 1,407 hectares had been transferred to the provincial government of Biliran Province.

LAGAWE, Ifugao, Jan. 26 (PIA) -- In line with the austerity measures of the provincial government, Governor Eugene Balitang issued the policies and guidelines for traveling expenses of all employees.

The guidelines provide the rates of travel expenses with in and outside the province and computations of the daily rate.
According to the guidelines, all travels by provincial government employees within or outside the province shall be duly authorized by the governor himself or the provincial administrator.

“Before a travel is made, it should be signed by authorized signatories and shall be pre-numbered by the provincial administrator’s office for the purpose of authenticity,” it stated.

ILIGAN CITY, Lanao del Norte, Jan. 26 (PIA) -- Donation of P500 million for Sendong victims in Iligan by San Miguel Corp. (SMC) provided one of the highlights in what could be described as a very successful public-private-partnership (PPP) enterprise at the “Bayanihan” Village in Sta. Elena, this city, yesterday, Jan. 25.

Witnessed by President Benigno s. Aquino III, a symbolic cheque bearing the amount intended for the construction of 2,500 Gawad Kalinga (GK) houses in the area was received by Vice-President Jejomar C. Binay from Ramon Ang of SMC.

This would be on top of the 1,700 GK houses that the National Housing Authority (NHA) will build in the area, which the President Aquino has asked the NHA General Manager Chito Cruz, to finish by June, this year.

About 2,000 volunteers from all sectors of society, particularly, students, teachers, civil society organizations, local government unit employees and barangay officials came in answer to the call of Mayor Lawrence Ll. Cruz to honor the dead victims of Sendong by helping clean the city and fast tracking the construction of the permanent homes of survivors.

The regional office of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR-12) here is consolidating efforts to immediately begin the implementation of the National Greening Program (NGP) this year.

DENR 12 Regional Executive Director Alfredo S. Pascual on January 18 met with field officials and other program implementers to download 2012 targets to eight of the nine Community Environment and Natural Resources Offices (CENROs), and additional targets funded out of 2011 savings from NGP.

As agreed, each CENRO was assigned a target in terms of the number of hectares and corresponding number of seedlings to be planted. Per estimates, an hectare of land should be planted 500 trees.

As part of the activities in project implementation, CENROs must also conduct surveys, mappings and planning to identify the exact location of each project.

Late last year, Environment Secretary Ramon J.P. Paje instructed all Regional Executive Directors to direct all CENROs to prepare their Annual Procurement Plan for the required seedlings.

Another business that is deep need of advertising. It is obscurely located at the second floor of New City Square (formerly Agora). Most people in Tagbilaran don't know Sunburst exists. Reason: no advertising. Poor business practice.

Garden Cafe needs to advertise. This place has become too obscure to those who are still new to the city of Tagbilaran.

Haven't tried most of the restaurants listed above. Too confined in the small corners of Tagbilaran. It takes a lot of time to go to Panglao.

Health and dental experts on Tuesday warned Filipinos that oral sex with a partner with genital warts can increase the risk of cancerâ€"even more than smoking and drinking.

The finding linking a virus that causes genital warts to oral cancer was tackled at a recent joint scientific conference of the Philippine Medical Association (PMA) and the Philippine Dental Association (PDA) as part of this year’s celebration of National Cancer Consciousness Week.

People who have had more than five oral sex partners were nine times more likely to have cancer of the tonsils, tongue or throat, said the PMA, referring to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

In a statement Tuesday, the PMA cited studies showing that the human papilloma virus (HPV), mainly responsible for cervical cancer among women, can also cause oral cancer in both men and women who engage in unprotected oral sex.

BANGKOKâ€"Police in Thailand said Wednesday that they had apprehended a thief with more than a thousand pairs of women’s underwear in the trunk of his car.

Police also found more than ten thousand pairs at the house of the 48-year-old Thai suspect, who was arrested late Tuesday with an accomplice after breaking into a building in Bangkok’s Chinatown.

They said the man admitted to stealing and collecting women’s underwear since the age of 18.

“He smelled them all the time even while driving,” said police Major General Saroj Promcharoen.

The suspect will be charged with stealing property, though not the underwear for now because there is no plaintiff, police said.

"It would be a thousand pities if women wrote like men, or lived like men, or looked like men, for if two sexes are quite inadequate, considering the vastness and variety of the world, how should we manage with one only? Ought not education to bring out and fortify the differences rather than the similarities? For we have too much likeness as it is, and if an explorer should come back and bring word of other sexes looking through the branches of other trees at other skies, nothing would be of greater service to humanity; and we should have the immense pleasure into the bargain of watching Professor X rush for his measuring-rods to prove himself "superior.""

Where are the accused in the abduction of the missing students from the University of the Philippines, Department of Justice (DOJ) Secretary Leila De Lima on Tuesday asked both the Department of National Defense (DND) and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).

In a two-page letter addressed to DND Secretary Voltaire Gazmin and AFP chief of staff Lt. Gen. Jesse Dellosa dated Jan. 9, 2012, De Lima said that they were not given a copy of an order from the Malolos City Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 14 allowing the transfer of Lt. Col Felipe Anotado Jr. and Staff Sgt. Edgardo Osorio to the Army Custodial Management Unit in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City.

Anotado and Osorio are the co-accused of former Bantay party-list Representative and retired Army Maj. Gen. Jovito Palparan Jr., who is now at-large.

De Lima said that they were not even given a copy of the motion filed by the Intelligence and Security Group (ISG).

The ISG filed a separate motion before the Malolos City RTC asking that they be granted custody for Anotado and Osorio.

What is the update of this case? Has the suspect been tried in court?

The impeachment trial of Corona is so dragging. It would have been better had Corona resigned before the trial began.
