Technology / CIA Website Hacked by Anonymous Group
February 14, 2012, 08:44:44 AM
by AFP

The website of the Central Intelligence Agency was inaccessible on Friday after the hacker group Anonymous claimed to have knocked it offline.

“CIA Tango down,” a member of Anonymous said on @YourAnonNews, a Twitter feed used by the group. “Tango down” is an expression used by the US Special Forces when they have eliminated an enemy.

Attempts to access the CIA website at http://www.cia.gov were unsuccessful.

More than two hours after the initial attack on the site attempts by Agence France-Presse to reach cia.gov were met with a message saying the Web page was not available.

Asked about the apparent website outage, a CIA spokeswoman said: “We are looking into these reports.”

Members of Anonymous also claimed Friday to have hacked the website of Camimex, the Mexican chamber of mines, and posted emails taken from the site online.

“My job is to get him ready for whoever they put in front of me,” pahayag ni Roach. “I don’t negotiatie the fights with him anymore. Him and [Top Rank promoter] Bob [Arum] do that and it looks like it’s Bradley and it looks like it’s going to be a June 9th date I hear. That’s fine with me. I’ll get him ready for that fight.”

Ayon kay Roach, mapanganib na kalaban ang walang talong si Bradley na bagamat hindi knockout artist ay maruming magboksing dahil gumagamit ng ulo at siko para manalo lamang sa laban.

Malacañang is pressuring some senators to push for the opening of Chief Justice Corona’s foreign currency deposits at the PS Bank despite a temporary restraining order from the Supreme Court, Corona’s lawwyers disclosed Sunday.

In a press conference at the Club Filipino in San Juan, the lawyers claimed that P100 million would be released by Malacanang as a guarantee to senators in exchange for their vote against the TRO when they meet in a caucus on Monday to decide on whether they should abide by the ruling of the high tribunal.

They refused to divulge the name of their source but insisted that “he is reliable and trust worthy.”
They said that the money would come from “savings” and would be used for “soft projects.”

History / The Importance of Studying Artifacts
February 12, 2012, 11:42:34 AM
By examining the artifacts left behind by these civilizations, archeologists and scientists learn more about how the people during that time hunted and prepared food. Moreover, artifacts tell us how these people designed their homes or shelters and what tools they used in daily life. Archeologists also are interested in the clothing and jewelry worn by past civilizations. The way people dressed and what they used to adorn themselves often tells us a great deal about their belief system.

Whitney Houston, who reigned as pop music’s queen until her majestic voice and regal image were ravaged by drug use, erratic behavior and a tumultuous marriage to singer Bobby Brown, has died. She was 48.

Publicist Kristen Foster said Saturday that the singer had died, but the cause and the location of her death were unknown.

At her peak, Houston was the golden girl of the music industry. From the middle 1980s to the late 1990s, she was one of the world’s best-selling artists. She wowed audiences with effortless, powerful, and peerless vocals that were rooted in the black church but made palatable to the masses with a pop sheen.

Her success carried her beyond music to movies, where she starred in hits like “The Bodyguard” and “Waiting to Exhale.”

How To Tips / Tips How to Sell Wine
February 12, 2012, 10:25:17 AM
source: PLR Article

In the world of wine, the Internet has drastically changed the business and landscape for a lot of industries and manufacturers.  Retails and wineries alike are using the Internet to sell their unique wine to the public, reaching more people than they ever could before.  For the public, the Internet provides a lot of options for buying or even selling wine.

The key to selling wine is knowing the conditions of the bottle, such as how it was stored, how old it is, and the price you are asking for the wine. Age worthy wines are normally the best selling, as they all have one thing in common - all can be held for quite a long time.  These types of wines are high in demand, some dating back to the 1940s.  They are still selling strong today, some even going for an high as $5,000 dollars a bottle!  If you have any bottles of age worthy wines, you should hang on to them for as long as you can - then sell them for a hefty profit.

Vintage Port is one of the best age worthy wines.  Being a fortified wine, Vintage Port brands can age for nearly 100 years or more.  The big names include Taylor Fladgate and Fonseca, among others.  Port wine is very popular these days, with people buying and selling it to rake in the profits.  As long as you take care of the bottles and store them properly, they can bring in a lot of money.

Fine Italian wine is also great to have, as they are normally bought and sold online.  You can store these types of wine for several years, as they still provide great taste.  Top California Cabernet is another type of wine that sells great, although it can be hard to get.  If you buy the right type of Top California wine, you can sell it for 2 - 3 times the price you paid for the bottle.

If you are looking to sell wine, online auctions are a great place to start.  By using an online auction, you can list your wine that you are selling, and get the current prices on wines that you are thinking of selling as well.  If you look around on the Internet, you can find some great auction web sites that will allow you to sell wine.  There are several out there, giving you plenty to choose from.  When you find one that you like, make sure that you look at the prices and how things work - before you decide to use it to sell your wine.

Another great place to go online are wine message boards. Most wine message boards offer a buying and selling area as well.  Almost all message boards are free to join, although you should become active with your postings to gain trust on the boards.  Members of the boards sell their wines to each other.  Selling is done privately, which eliminates any type of transaction fee.

Proper storage is also important when selling wine.  Not only for the seller, but the buyer as well.  In order to sell wine, the wine needs to be stored properly, with the proper temperature.  If it isn’t, the wine will be nothing but mere vinegar once it is opened up.

All things aside, wine can be a very profitable hobby, providing you do things right.  If you have a passion for wine and a passion to succeed - selling wine can be very profitable.  When selling wine, you should always put quality first.  Money will come with time - although you should always think about the quality of the wine - and not just the dollars and cents.

Collecting wine can be a very fun and exciting hobby - especially when you try to find the wine.  If you are looking to collect wine, you may end up spending a bit more money than you thought.  Wine collecting is a great hobby, although it can be very expensive.  If you are just starting out, the tips below may come in very handy to help you get started.

The first thing to do, is find a place to store your wine.  You can store your wine at home, although you’ll need to have a location with the proper amount of space and cooling temperature (between 50 and 65 degrees F).  You’ll also need to determine what brands and types of wine you are planning to collect.  There are several options to choose from, including red and white wine.  You’ll also need to find some places with good quality and refinery to buy your wine from.

You can always participate in tastings and trade shows as well.  Here, you can meet other people who are into wine collecting, and get to know local traders.  You should also strive to learn as much as you can about wine.  You can learn a lot about wine on the Internet, or by reading magazines and newsletters dedicated to wine.  By doing so, you can also learn more about storage, buying wine, and even cooling your wine.

To better prepare your wine for storage, you can try tasting different varieties.  This way, you can identify which wines you need to age more.  You’ll learn more about wine this way as well, such as how to distinguish tastes.  You may also want to learn how to identify the flavor quality as well.  As you may already know, there is a difference among rare vintage wines and wines that are instantly processed.

If you are just beginning to collect wine, you should avoid purchasing in bulk until you know for sure what types of wine you wish to collect.  When you visit a wine trader, you should let him know that you are a collector.  This way, he can inform you whether or not the wines you are collecting are available in his inventory. If you hope to collect wines from other areas, he may be able to give you contact information for finding the wines you are interested in.

Keep in mind that wine collecting isn’t all about fun - it’s also a great way to eventually start your own business.  You can attend wine shows and tasting events to learn more about the different brands, and also find wines that will bring in higher profits.  Once you have collected some rare bottles of wine - you can start selling and watch your profits soar.

PLR Article:

Attending wine tasting events can be a great experience and a lot of fun, although a lot of people choose not to attend out of fear - or not knowing what to do or what to expect.  Even though there are no mysteries to wine tasting, there are some things that you should always remember.

During a wine tasting event, women are always served before the men. Some tastings will serve you bottled water between tastings, so you can clean your mouth out and be ready to taste the next wine that is served.  When you take the wine, you should always handle the glass by the stem, to avoid heating it with your hands.  There will also be crackers and other goodies on hand as well, to help you cleanse your mouth between wine tastings.

As you may already know, you can tell quite a bit about the wine by the color.  When you attend a wine tasting for the first time, you’ll notice that the glasses are clear.  This helps you to examine the wine better.  There should also be white tablecloth on the table as well, to help you see the color the wine more clearly.  You should never go by the name of the wine alone, as it can easily fool you.

You’ll also notice the more experienced wine tastes swirl their wine around in the glass before they taste it.  Although it may look weird, slightly swirling the wine actually helps to bring out the flavor.  Most wines have been aging in bottles for long periods of time, sometimes even years.  When the wine is swirled around in the glass, the swirling will release the flavors in the wine and bring them out when the wine is tasted.

At wine tastings, you’ll need to look at the wine, smell it, then after swirling it around in the glass - taste it.  Smells play an integral part of the process, as you’ll get a lot more from the wine by smelling it first.  Wine has quite an intriguing aroma, which helps to bring out the taste that wine is so well known for.  Once you have smelled the wine, you should allow a few moments to take in the smell and think about the wine that you are smelling.

Last but not least, you’ll want to know how to properly taste the wine.  Your tongue has taste buds in the front and the back, which helps to detect flavors.  Wine is full of flavors, and how you taste it will make the biggest impact.  When you put the wine in your mouth, you should always swish it around in your mouth for a few seconds, and allow the flavors plenty of time to dance on your palate.  Once your taste buds have started to discover the wine, you can think about what you are tasting.  After swallowing the wine, the aftertaste that remains in your mouth should give you even more of an idea as to the type and flavor of the wine.

Before you attend a wine tasting, you should always learn as much as you can about the many different flavors and varieties of wine.  This way, you’ll have a better understanding of what you should look for in both taste and flavor.  Even though you may be new to wine tasting, you should never pass up an opportunity to go.  You’ll get a great experience in the world of wine tasting and get to experience wines that you may have never heard of before.

The Nigerian militant group Boko Haram conducted a series of bombing attacks and armed assaults Jan. 20 in the northern city of Kano, the capital of Kano state and second-largest city in Nigeria. The attacks, which reportedly included the employment of at least two suicide vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices (VBIEDs), targeted a series of police facilities in Kano. These included the regional police headquarters, which directs police operations in Kano, Katsina and Jigawa states, as well as the State Security Service office and the Nigerian Immigration Service office. At least 211 people died in the Kano attacks, according to media reports.

Vicky’s story began like those of many wives whose husbands leave to seek jobs overseasâ€"full of hope for a better future.

“I used to hear bells ringing in my ears every time I heard the name of the placeâ€"Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. I can’t explain the joy I felt every time I received a letter. I felt hope, love, longings, kisses, and hugs were enclosed in those envelopes from my beloved husband… and they came one after the other,” she recalled.

She married her husband in 1986, and after a year they had a son. “It was a blissful marriage,” said Vicky. “My friends can attest that he put me on a pedestal. I was a lucky wife, they said.”

“My husband left the house to work abroad because he thought that what we were both earning here in the Philippines would  not be enough to provide our son a better future. So in January 1988, he decided to try his luck in the Kingdom.”  He left a two-year-old marriage and a year-old son.

“I was the typical, supportive wife. Although deep inside I was hurting, I was also willing to sacrifice. And I loved him even more.”

Fast forwardâ€"2011. “My husband is now living with another woman. Our marriage started to crumble in 1991, before the birth of our second child.”

Vicky said her husband came home from the Kingdom a changed manâ€"a violent and abusive man. “He was no longer the same person I married. I saw a complete stranger. It was hard to describe because in all honesty I didn’t know exactly what kind of life he had while he was abroad.”

“I persevered. Perhaps, I thought, this too, will pass. Perhaps he was also a victim of society, as much as we, his family.”

But after more than a decade living the nightmare of a battered wife, most times feeling like a zombie and seeing the look of horror in her children’s eyes, Vicky finally had the courage to ask him to leave, citing laws against domestic violence.

“We have moved on. My son is trying to finish his course and is now a third year college student. My daughter just graduated cum laude from a well-known university and is now employed.”

The government sings high praises to OFWs, they call them the “unsung heroes.” They sacrifice for their families; bring in dollars. They help the Philippine economy, etc.

This is another side of the story. What do they call the victims of abusive OFWs?

The Philippine Embassy in Beirut repatriated 53 overseas Filipino workers (OFW) in distress from Lebanon, almost all of whom have defied the deployment ban.

The OFWs departed Beirut on February 06 and were sent off by Philippine Ambassador to Lebanon Leah M. Basinang-Ruiz, POLO Labor Attaché Maria Salome Mendoza, Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) Welfare Officer Aquilina Tarrobago and Embassy Assistance-to-Nationals (ATN) Officer Edwin Juan A. Batallones.

The 53 OFWs arrived on February 7 at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 1 aboard Gulf Air flight 154.

Representatives from the DFA, the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA), and OWWA welcomed the Filipino repatriates at the airport and facilitated their immigration and customs clearances.

Almost all of the 53 Filipino repatriates have violated the total deployment ban to Lebanon, and were illegally recruited. They arrived in Beirut between 2009 and 2011.

The Embassy negotiated with the Filipino repatriates' employers and with the Lebanese immigration office for the immediate issuance of their exit visas. - PIA

MANILA, Philippines â€" The Supreme Court and the Senate, acting as an impeachment court, share equal powers.

This was the opinion shared by respected constitutionalist Fr. Joaquin Bernas, SJ, Wednesday night before members of the Philippine Constitution Association (Philconsa).

Contrary to the belief of many senators, the Senate is not a superior branch even if it is acting as an impeachment body, Fr. Bernas said.

With the continued insistence of the senators that they are above all branches when the Senate acts as an impeachment court (IC), Fr. Bernas aired fears a clash between the legislature and the judiciary.

“By saying that the Senate as an impeachment court is superior to the Supreme Court, the two bodies are placed in a collision course. When an irressitable force moves... someone has to give in,” Fr. Bernas said during the oath-taking ceremony of Philconsa at the historic landmark Manila Hotel Wednesday night.

“These are just samples of the problems that are arising in the course of impeachment trial. The climactic moment will come when the Senate, acting as a court, will enter its verdict,” he added.

Parliament approves special counsel bill to probe cyber hacking scandal
By Kim Eun-jung

South Korean lawmakers passed Thursday a bill calling for a special probe into the October by-elections hacking scandal amid lingering suspicions that ruling party members were involved in the scheme.

The move came after the main opposition Democratic United Party last month submitted a bill to launch an investigation into the hacking of the national election watchdog's Web site.

It claimed the prosecution's probe was not enough to clear up suspicions over the hacking.

Prosecutors last month concluded that a former aide to former ruling party lawmaker Choi Ku-sik colluded with a former secretary for the National Assembly Speaker Park Hee-tae to mastermind the attack that paralyzed the National Election Commission's Web site for two hours.

While opposition lawmakers have raised suspicions that the cyber attack may have involved higher ranks in the ruling party, the prosecution team said no lawmakers were behind the hacking.

Two suspects and five other IT administrators have already been arrested and are also accused of attacking the Web site of then Seoul mayoral candidate Park Won-soon, a lawyer-turned-activist who beat his high-profile ruling party rival Na Kyung-won.

Mexico will hold its presidential election July 1 against the backdrop of a protracted war against criminal cartels in the country. Former President Vicente Fox of the National Action Party (PAN) launched that struggle; his successor, Felipe Calderon, also of the PAN, greatly expanded it. While many Mexicans apparently support action against the cartels, the Calderon government has come under much criticism for its pursuit of the cartels, contributing to Calderon's low popularity at the moment. The PAN is widely expected to lose in July to the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), which controlled the Mexican presidency for most of the 20th century until Fox's victory in 2000. According to polls, the PAN has lost credibility among many Mexican voters, many of whom also once again view the PRI as a viable alternative.

In our effort to track Mexico's criminal cartels and to help our readers understand the dynamics that shape the violence in Mexico, Stratfor talks to a variety of people, including Mexican and U.S. government officials, journalists, business owners, taxi drivers and street vendors. At present, many of these contacts are saying that the Calderon administration could attempt to pull off some sort of last-minute political coup (in U.S. political parlance, an "October surprise") to boost the PAN's popularity so it can retain the presidency.

The potential election ploy most often discussed is the capture of Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman Loera, the leader of the Sinaloa cartel, who is widely believed to be the richest, most powerful drug trafficker anywhere. The reasoning goes that if the government could catch Guzman, Calderon's (and hence the PAN's) popularity would soar.

Still, very real questions exist about whether such an operation really would give the PAN the boost it needs to retain the presidency, however. North of the border, the re-election of U.S. President Barack Obama has not been guaranteed by the May 2011 death of Osama bin Laden. Political considerations aside, the factors that have helped Guzman avoid capture thus far are the very same factors that inhibit the Mexican government's ability to capture him. While we don't put a lot of stock in these rumors of an election surprise, we do see them as a good reason to examine the factors that have protected Guzman.

Plata o Plomo

As we noted in our annual cartel report, Mexico's cartels have begun to form into two major groupings around the two most powerful cartels, the Sinaloa cartel and Los Zetas. These two cartels approach business quite differently. The common Mexican cartel expression "plata o plomo" (literally translated as "silver or lead," the Spanish phrase signifying that a cartel will force one's cooperation with either a bribe or a bullet) illustrates the different modes of operation of the two hegemonic cartels.

Los Zetas, an organization founded by former Mexican special operations soldiers, tends to apply a military solution to any problem first -- plomo. They certainly bribe people, but one of their core organizational values is that it is cheaper and easier to threaten than to bribe. Rather than retain people on their payroll for years, Los Zetas also tend toward a short time horizon with bribery.

By contrast, people like Guzman and Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada Garcia, founders of the Sinaloa cartel, have been producing and trafficking narcotics for decades. Guzman and Zambada got their start in the trafficking business working for Miguel "El Padrino" Angel Felix Gallardo, the leader of the powerful Guadalajara cartel in the early 1980s. Because they have been in the illicit logistics business for decades, the Sinaloa leaders are more business-oriented than military-oriented. This means that the Sinaloa cartel tends to employ plata first, preferring to buy off the people required to achieve its objectives. It also frequently provides U.S. and Mexican authorities with intelligence pertaining to its cartel enemies rather than taking direct military action against them, thus using the authorities as a weapon against rival cartels. While Sinaloa does have some powerful enforcement groups, and it certainly can (and does) resort to ruthless violence, violence is merely one of the many tools at its disposal rather than its preferred approach to a given problem.

Thus, Sinaloa and Los Zetas each use the same set of tools, they just tend to use them in a different order.

Guzman's Web

Within his home territory of rural Sinaloa state, Guzman is respected and even revered. An almost-mythical figure, he has used his fortune to buy good will and loyalty in his home turf and elsewhere. In addition to his public largesse, Guzman has bribed people for decades. Unlike Los Zetas, the Sinaloa cartel leadership tends to take a long view on corruption. It will often recruit a low-level official and then continue to pay that person as he rises through the ranks. This long-term approach is not unlike that taken by some of the more patient intelligence services, along the lines of the Soviet recruitment of the "Cambridge Five" while they were still students. Quite simply, Guzman and the Sinaloa cartel have had police and military officers, politicians, journalists and judges on their payroll for years and even decades.

This intelligence agency-like approach has permitted the Sinaloa leadership to construct a wide web of assets with which to gather intelligence and serve as its agents of influence. At the street level, all Mexican cartels employ lookouts called "halcones," Spanish for "falcons," who provide their cartel masters with early warning of law enforcement or rival cartel activity in the halcones' area of responsibility. Higher-ranking officials on a cartel's payroll essentially serve as high-level halcones who provide early warnings when government operations against the cartel are being planned. Such advanced warning allows the cartels to protect their shipments and leadership.

Once an official or politician is on a cartel payroll (a situation similar to a network of sources run by an intelligence agency), he is subject to blackmail should he stop cooperating. And the relationship between a politician and the cartels can go beyond just cash. It can also involve the murder of a rival or provide other forms of non-cash assistance in the attainment of political power.

Whatever the relationship entails, once a cartel gets its hooks into a person, it tends not to let go -- and the person thus entangled has little choice but to continue cooperating, since he can be subject to arrest and political or financial ruin if he is caught. He also can be assassinated should he decide to quit cooperating. No Mexican politician wants to become the next Raul Salinas de Gortari, the brother of former President Carlos Salinas de Gortari, who the U.S. government alleges made hundreds of millions of dollars in dirty money, much of it from cartel figures. Raul Salinas' arrest in 1995 for murder, the subsequent money laundering charges brought against him, and questions about what his brother Carlos knew about his activities were important factors in the 2000 presidential election in which the PRI lost.

This fear of being linked to a figure like Guzman serves as a strong deterrent to his arrest. Guzman has been operating as a high-level narcotics trafficker in Mexico for decades now, and a big part of his operations has involved bribery. For example, in November 2008, Mexico's drug czar, Noe Ramirez Mandujano, was arrested and charged with accepting $450,000 a month from Zambada and the Beltran Leyva brothers, who were aligned with Sinaloa at the time.

If Guzman were to talk to authorities after his arrest, he could implicate a number of very powerful political and business figures. Indeed, it is likely this fear led to the delicate treatment he received after his 1993 arrest in Guatemala and his subsequent conviction in Mexico for narcotics trafficking and bribery. Guzman was able to continue to run his criminal empire from behind bars, and it was only when it appeared that Guzman might face extradition to the United States that he chose to escape from his comfortable prison cell in January 2001. Since his escape, he undoubtedly has continued to add strands to the web of protection surrounding him.

We must also note that without Guzman, the dynamics that drive the Mexican cartels would continue, and other leaders or even organizations would rise to take his place. Killing or arresting an individual will not be the end of Mexico's criminal cartels.

If Guzman is concerned that he could be killed rather than captured, like his former associate Arturo Beltran Leyva, it is possible that he could have prepared some type of insurance document incriminating powerful people on Sinaloa's payroll. As a deterrent to Guzman's killing, Sinaloa could threaten to release such a document should Guzman be killed.

That said, a long line of powerful Mexican cartel leaders have been arrested. Guzman's mentor, Felix Gallardo, was arrested in 1989 in large part due to U.S. pressure on the Mexican government in the wake of the torture and murder of U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration special agent Enrique Camarena. Gulf cartel founder Juan Garcia Abrego, also a protege of Felix Gallardo, was arrested in 1996. Garcia Abrego allegedly was linked to Raul Salinas and other high-ranking officials in the government of then-President Ernesto Zedillo. Garcia Abrego's successor as leader of the Gulf cartel, Osiel Cardenas Guillen, was arrested in 2003 and, like Garcia Abrego, was deported to the United States and convicted in a U.S. court; he is currently incarcerated in the "Supermax" penitentiary in Florence, Colo. Indeed, Guzman and Zambada are the last of Felix Gallardo's proteges still at large.

Along with Zambada, Guzman has been a high-profile fugitive for three decades now. He has not survived that long by being careless or stupid. It would be very difficult to track down such an individual in a short window of time established by political calculations unless those responsible already know his exact location and have chosen not to arrest him thus far. The Calderon administration and the PAN have struggled with public perceptions for some time now, making it likely that if high-level PAN officials knew where Guzman was and wanted to arrest him for the public relations bump such an operation could provide, they already would have done so.

Still, Guzman is one of the most wanted individuals in the world, and large teams of Mexican and U.S. law enforcement and intelligence agents are trying to locate him. Therefore, it is possible that Guzman could be arrested before the election in July. Any operation to capture him would be tightly compartmentalized for fear it could leak out to high-ranking halcones in the Mexican (or U.S.) government. Indeed, special Mexican units working closely with U.S. counterparts and segregated from any outside contact so that they cannot betray their mission -- or the intelligence that led to it -- normally carry out such sensitive operations. This means such an operation would likely be beyond the control of Mexican politicians to mandate, although they could conceivably provide actionable intelligence to the forces involved in such an operation.

Interestingly, with all the chatter of an election surprise floating around Mexico, any arrest at this point would be met with a great deal of skepticism. The arrest of such a powerful figure would almost certainly become very politicized with all parties attempting to use it to their advantage -- and dodge any connections they might have to Sinaloa. Such an environment would serve to bring more attention to the issue of corruption and collusion between the cartels and the government. And that could end up hurting rather than benefiting the PAN in the upcoming presidential election.

Survivors of a deadly quake in Negros Oriental begged rescuers Tuesday to keep searching for dozens of people buried in landslides, but officials said hopes of finding them alive were dim.

Two days after a 6.9-magnitude quake flattened homes, destroyed bridges and crumbled mountainsides on the central island of Negros, rescue workers battled without heavy equipment to dig through rubble in the search for the missing.

“Please do not give up, please continue searching,” 47-year-old housewife Virginsita Magalso sobbed, her face streaked with dirt, as rescuers picked through mounds of dirt that covered the homes of family and friends.

“We can still save them, miracles happen all the time.”

Defense spokesperson Karen Jimeno on Wednesday said that her being a signatory to a 2010 University of the Philippines College of Law Faculty statement against Chief Justice Renato Corona’s alleged midnight appointment should not be an issue in the impeachment trial.

She told reporters at a press briefing that she respected the Supreme Court’s decision despite her different interpretation of the law.

Jimeno explained that she taught law at the time she signed the statement, adding that she was surprised the issue was rehashed when “I would have gladly brought this up.”

The president of the Flight Attendants and Stewards Association of the Philippines or FASAP returned to the witness stand on Wednesday for cross examination by Chief of Justice Renato Corona’s defense team.

Roberto Anduiza was cross-examined by Corona’s lead counsel, former Supreme Court Justice Serafin Cuevas.

Anduiza first testified Monday, accusing the Chief Justice of interfering with the illegal retrenchment case filed by the FASAP against the Philippine Airlines management, which allegedly resulted in the reversal of the Supreme Court’s ruling in favor of PAL.

Lawyers of Chief Justice Renato Corona today asked for two Associate Justices of the Supreme Court to inhibit from handling their petition seeking to nullify the articles of impeachment filed against the high court’s chief.

“It is publicly known that the Honorable Justices Antonio Carpio and Ma. Lourdes Sereno have been critical of Chief Justice Renato Corona. More importantly, Justices Carpio and Sereno are openly touted as the likely replacements, in the event that CJ Corona is removed from office,” the motion to inhibit stated.

In the motion, Corona’s defense lawyers said in the case of Justice Carpio, “it is well known that he begrudged CJ Corona on the latter’s appointments as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. While there have been public displays of civility, the enmity and rivalry between him and CJ Corona is common knowledge. It is not uncommon to find them on different sides of most judicial matters.”

The Philippine Savings Bank (PSBank) fears being sanctioned by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, as it petitioned the Supreme Court to stop the Senate impeachment court from compelling it to release the bank records of impeached Chief Justice Renato Corona, who is under trial.

“Petitioner PSBank will likewise risk revocation or suspension of its authority to accept new foreign currency deposits by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas pursuant to Section 87 of the Manual Regulations on Foreign Exchange Transactions,” the bank, through its president, Pascual M. Garcia III, said.

Garcia said that they might also incur criminal liability for violation of Republic Act 6426, or the Foreign Currency Deposit Act.
Under Section 87 of the Manual Regulations on Foreign Exchange Transactions, any violation of RA 6426 provides, upon conviction, a penalty of imprisonment of not less than one year but not more than five years or a fine of not less than P5,000 or more than P25,000. Also, the BSP may revoke or suspend the authority of a bank to accept new foreign currency deposits.

U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta suggested last week that the United States could wrap up combat operations in Afghanistan by the end of 2013, well before the longstanding 2014 deadline when full control is to be ceded to Kabul. Troops would remain in Afghanistan until 2014, as agreed upon at the 2010 Lisbon Summit, and would be engaged in two roles until at least 2014 and perhaps even later. One role would be continuing the training of Afghan security forces. The other would involve special operations troops carrying out capture or kill operations against high-value targets.

Along with this announcement, the White House gave The New York Times some details on negotiations that have been under way with the Taliban. According to the Times, Mullah Mohammad Omar, the senior-most leader of the Afghan Taliban, last summer made overtures to the White House offering negotiations. An intermediary claiming to speak for Mullah Omar delivered the proposal, an unsigned document purportedly from Mullah Omar that could not be established as authentic. The letter demanded the release of some Taliban prisoners before any talks. In spite of the ambiguities, which included a recent public denial by the Taliban that the offer came from Mullah Omar, U.S. officials, obviously acting on other intelligence, regarded the proposal as both authentic and representative of the views of the Taliban leadership and, in all likelihood, those of Mullah Omar, too.
