But the shortest world leader on record was Benito Juarez, five times president of Mexico between 1867 and 1872, at 4ft 6in.

Benito Juarez

So, if you are seeking the highest office in the land, don’t be put off by the fact that you are below average height. As the leader of a nation, you will be in good company.

http://stevehollier.wordpress.com/
#33003
Engelbert Dollfuss, Austrian Chancellor from 1932-34, stood 4ft 11in in his socks.

Kim Jong Ill was however, tall compared with other world leaders from History…

David Ben Gurion the first Prime Minister of Israel was only 5′ 0”.

David Ben Gurion

#33005
Yasuo Fukuda of Japan 5’6″, Silvio Berlusconi [Italy] 5’5, “Nicolas Sarkozy [France] 5’5″, and Dmitry Medvedev [Russia] 5’4″.

Presidents Obama and Medvedev
Even this carefully composed shot can’t disguise their difference in height but amongst [present day] leaders, the prize for short-man goes to Kim Jong Ill at 5’3″.

Thinking about British Prime Ministers going back forty years or so, with the exception of Mrs. Thatcher [5'5"] and Harold Wilson [5'8"] all the rest of them have been between 5’11″ and 6’1″. Here’s the list:

James Callaghan 6’1″

Alec Douglas Hume 6’1″

David Cameron 6’0″

Edward Heath 6″0″

John Major 5’11″

Tony Blair 5’11″

Gordon Brown 5’11″

The giant of British political life was however Lord Salisbury, Prime Minister between 1895 and 1902 who was 6’4”.

Lord Salisbury

Prime Minister Stephen Harper of Canada
at 6'3" is currently the world's tallest leader.
#33008
So, according to Elsea it's actually a myth. History, too, provides enough examples to debunk it. Sure Josef Goebbels and Charles Manson were very short. But Saddam Hussein was 6'2" and Osama Bin Laden, he's 6'4".

And it turns out Napoleon was really 5'6". His enemies claimed he was only 5'2". Could it have been propaganda?

Now English psychologist Dr. Mike Eslea of the University of Central Lancashire has put the Napoleon Complex to the test, using a little game to measure aggression among tall and short men.

"You're going to start giving them a little rap on the knuckles as a provocation to see how they react," Eslea said. The subjects think it's their dexterity being assessed, but actually it's their aggression. "On the question of aggression I can tell you that the taller guys were more aggressive," he said.

"Napoleon Complex is when short men overcompensate for being short by being overly aggressive," said Steven Goldsmith, editor of Short Persons Support. The French emperor has been portrayed in movies such as the eponymous offering of "Napoleon" from 2003 as a feisty little fellow, going down in history as only 5'2".

another thing, mas mahal ang plete ug pet/live animal sa cebu pacific compared to pal.  and it's more inconvenient.  at cebu pacific, one has to go to another place (the old domestic airport in manila and the compound for cargo companies in cebu, both quite a distance from the airports) to claim one's pet.  with pal, one only has to wait at the cargo conveyor.

abangan: katig philosophy.

the katig philosophy envisions the ideal balance of the general population's economic chances.  it adheres to the christian sense of equality of every human being both in the eyes of god and in the eyes of men.  thus, the name "katig", which means outrigger, that contraption attached to boats to maintain its balance and keep it from sinking.  appropriately, in the boat trip of life, the outrigger keeps us, the passengers, safe and secure.

the katig philosophy is free from ideological persuasions, either left or right and everything in-between, its adherents being aware that each hand has five fingers, except for those very rare exceptions when some hands have six fingers, which don't make any difference anyway.

and example of an applied katig philosophy is a certain organization whose top honcho, by whatever title he holds, be it ceo or director or president of the republic, contributes his whole pay to the organization's financial pool.  the same holds true for everybody else in the organization, all the way down to the janitor.  the amassed amount will then be distributed equally to everyone in the organization. ;D

Former president Bill Clinton revealed after he left the White House, that during a visit to Washington in 1995, Yeltsin's late-night drinking almost caused an international incident. US secret service agents found Yeltsin, who was staying in the White House guest quarters, standing alone on Pennsylvania Avenue in his underwear trying to hail a cab. Slurring his words, Yeltsin told them he wanted a pizza.

The former head of Yeltsin's security, Alexander Korzhakov, later described his boss as a suicidal alcoholic who had twice tried to kill himself.

Later that year in Dublin he left Irish premier Albert Reynolds standing on the red carpet at Shannon Airport during a stopover. Yeltsin's red-faced minders informed the Irish officials that Yeltsin was ''unwell'' and could not leave the plane.

Yeltsin's non-conformist approach was not confined to politicians. In an extraordinary breach of protocol during an audience with Pope John Paul II in February, 1998, he told the pontiff ''Holy Father, we haven't finished yet,'' when the pope clearly thought they had. At a subsequent banquet decorum went out the window, when Yeltsin made an expansive toast and declared his ''boundless love for Italian women''.

Perhaps his most comical effort was playing wooden spoons on the balding head of Askar Akayev, the president of ex-Soviet state Kyrgyzstan, but not suprisingly he saved his best for the Americans.

The most unstable inebriate to ever have access to weapons that could wipe out half the planet was the late Russian Federation leader Boris Nikolayevich Yeltsin, whose antics while in power from 1991-1999 both amused and chilled his foreign counterparts who were worried he was out of touch with reality.

Boisterous Boris, the first president of the new federation, was in charge of a massive nuclear arsenal and an economy on the brink of collapse, but still he found time to enjoy himself in public.

During a trip to Germany in 1994, after imbibing several champagnes at a state luncheon, Yeltsin jumped on stage, took the baton from the conductor of a brass band and led a performance of a Russian folk song, all the while singing and dancing and blowing kisses to the audience.

more yeltsinism:

Stockholm, 1997:  Yeltsin suddenly started talking nonsense [and] told his bemused audience that Swedish meatballs reminded him of Björn Borg's face.
He also announced that he would cut Russia’s nuclear arsenal by one-third and work toward a total world ban on nuclear weapons.  Russian officials scrambled to correct the president.

Yeltsin’s drinking was proverbially “normal” for a Russian, i.e. one bottle of vodka a day. As his ill-health and alcoholism â€" no doubt exacerbated by the stress of managing increasingly chaotic Russia â€"  worsened, his erratic acts multiplied.

During a visit to Washington D.C., Yeltsin was found on Pennsylvania Avenue, drunk, in his underwear and trying to hail a cab in order to find pizza â€" that perennial food of choice among the inebriated.

Yeltsin would also call the White House from the Kremlin totally drunk.

Once above the Shannon Airport, Ireland, his plane circled overhead for at least an hour as the welcoming party waited on ground, Yeltsin being too ill â€" read, too drunk â€" to meet the Irish prime minister.

Although mostly harmless, this unpredictability caused great alarms in outside Russia as he threatened the West with a world war when the NATO bombs fell over Belgrade in 1999.

He also ordered the military to shoot on civilians and burn down everything in Chechnya.

As for Minnie and Goose, they often travel by pet-chauffeur taxi to Charleston where Martha has a second home. (Taking dogs on planes these days is a nightmare, all agree.)

Martha recalls: "On one occasion, a friend of a friend whose cousin is Jewish-turned-Buddhist had to fly to Texas to pick up several Tibetan Lamas who were visiting Austin.

"The pilot said he had to re-fuel somewhere, and said he'd drop me off in Charleston.

"Minnie sat in a leather seat looking out of the window of the plane. She was a rescue dog. From homeless dog on the verge of death to private jet. The change in circumstances did not escape her."

New York dogs adore TV. Justine sometimes catches Barley and Bruckner "following people and shapes like they're watching a tennis match. Incredible, hilarious, slightly terrifying."

On vacation, dachshunds Jennifer Lopez and Leonard Cohen prefer country inns to grander city hotels. Barley and Bruckner go to their aunt Laura and many canine cousins, including Phoebe Jane, in the Pennsylvania countryside.

Like all good New York dog people, Colleen and Steven reject the wilder shores of dog fashion, but Colleen does order special sweaters for them.

"I'm having some made with a glass of wine on one and a steak on the other, so I can look at all my favourite things when we go out walking."

To New Yorkers, there is no issue bigger than food so there is no reason dogs should feel otherwise.

Kiki the Chihuahua "follows a strict diet of one-third holistic dry dog food, one-third organic rice, and one-third organic cage-free chicken from the farm's market," says Beatrice Tosti di Valminuta. Naturally Kiki is enough of a gourmand to love "bitter greens".

"Barley and Bruckner are picky eaters," says Justine Haemmerli. "Our vet told us that owning this breed is like having a perennial two-year old, which at once made me question whether I ever wanted to have children.

i wonder if depression is even as common in the philippines as it is here in the u.s.a.

not depression in the u.s. sense.  remember that devastating typhoon that flooded manila?  u.s. soldiers who were around to help were struck over how people went about retrieving what was left of their lives, smiling.  had this been in the u.s., the stress would have been unbearable with people complaining just about anything (i can't quote directly, but the sense is there... it would take me ages to retrieve the exact quote).  in adversity, the heroes in us come out.  those words are not mine either.

Going "all out" and spending frivolously in environmentalism as well as human services sector as what the State of California had done in years past was the catalyst for the situation the state was placed in during the 2008-2011 years. I would also say that the same phenomena is occurring in other states in the mainland.

so, lorenz, was this frivolous spending a leftist ideology imposed by a leftist president?  or is this one more showcase of american spending spree?

"When my dachsund Jennifer Lopez was a puppy," says Colleen, "I was convinced she was depressed as a result of being left alone all day while we were at work.

"She would mope and I got worried, so we bought a second dog - Leonard Cohen - thinking that this would help her overcome her loneliness. It turned out she wasn't depressed, it was just her personality - melancholy and lazy. She's happy watching TV."

Diamonds are a dog's best friend

Let it be said that my friends are not those obsessive New Yorkers who buy diamond-studded dog collars (two million and more), or take them to a shrink. In fact, Justine Haemmerli, my god-daughter, who with her husband, Kevin Rodricks, owns two cavalier king spaniels named Barley and Bruckner, strictly rejects the idea.

"What could a dog shrink possibly do?" she says. "I think that our dogs are incredibly emotionally stable because I run their lives like a Montessori teacher."

"New York is a wonderful place for dogs, so many services: pools, spas, dog runs," says Beatrice Tosti di Valminuta.

Kiki, her Chihuahua, sometimes pays a little visit to her Italian restaurant and wine bar in lower Manhattan where everybody knows him.

Most of the time, though, Kiki attends doggie day care for small dogs. His real name is Killer Samson Hercules, because Beatrice who is Italian wanted a Chihuahua, and Julio, her Dominican husband, wanted a mastiff.

"We compromised on a Chihuahua with a mastiff name," says Beatrice.

Appearance & Characteristics: Certain gifted psychics see them on a regular basis but as for the rest of us it's a most RARE occurrence. Catching an apparition on film is what every ghost hunter aspires to but seldom, if ever sees. They show up in a transparent human form and wear the clothing of their period. You might also note that they normally appear faint and disfigured as in being incomplete. It should be said that an apparition can pose directly next to you and it still will not necessarily show up on film (99.9% of the time).

Locations spotted: They are most often reported being seen in older homes, hotels, theaters and cemeteries.

Speculations: It's unsure why they are able to show up on these rare occasions. [...] It should be noted that visiting relatives from the spirit world could also be considered an apparition.

Shadow ghosts, dark entities

Appearance & Characteristics: These ghosts usually appear as a shadow of sorts. They look a bit like Ecto-mist but with form and are normally reported to be two feet in length or longer and tend to travel at a height of two to ten feet. In photographs it's easy to confuse them with natural shadows so be careful. They are usually sneaky and evasive. When they are spotted it's usually out of the corner of your eye or as they are darting through a wall. They are often spotted in a mirror as well.

Locations spotted: Most often spotted in homes. Have also been seen outdoors at a distance.

Speculations: I guess the general consensus would be that they are ghosts in one of their forms. Some would say that they are demonic spirits but that doesn't seem to be the case.

if that long misty thing in langgamtamsi's pic wasn't caused by the camera lens, it could belong to the 'vortex, funnel ghost' type.

Vortex, funnel ghosts

Appearance & Characteristics: A vortex is a very strange and mysterious phenomena. They usually take on the appearance of a swirling funnel shape when moving about. They can also appear in pictures as being long and narrow and having a tread like design within their body. They are readily confused with a speeding orb when they slow down and take on this straight & narrow look. It's not presently known if a vortex has ever been captured on video tape. It should be noted that they are often felt as a cold spot.

Locations spotted: They are most often spotted inside homes & old buildings. At times they can also be spotted outdoors but that is very rare.

Speculations: There are many theories as to what vortices are exactly, including a visiting relative or a former resident of the home. It is also believed by some that it is a vehicle to transport spirits in the shape of orbs from their realm to ours.

Orbs, spears, globules, balls of light, globes

Appearance & Characteristics: Orbs are the most photographed anomalies captured on film by ghost hunters. They most often show up as transparent or translucent balls of light hovering above the ground. It used to be considered a prize photo if the photographed orb/s would show up on film with an inner substance and a spot (nucleus or brain) within the substance.

We are finding out now however, that some digital cameras will produce false orbs with these characteristics and they can no longer be counted as authentic. An impressive feature is when they are captured on film with a lingering trail. This trail indicates they were traveling at a fairly fast rate of speed at the time of the flash, which further indicates it's authenticity.  Some experts say that 85% of photographed orbs are created inadvertently by circumstances and weather conditions at the time of the flash. We at Ghoststudy believe this number is a bit high but probably close to being factual.

Orbs have also been seen on video hovering in the same position for short periods of time but most often are caught traveling erratically through the air in a rather care free pattern.

Locations spotted: They have been seen in about every location imaginable. Temperature changes and different climates do not seem to affect them. They are however, most often seen outdoors and especially seem to be drawn to historic surroundings.

Speculations: Believed by many to be the soul or spirit (human & animal) of those that have passed on from this life. The orb shape is obviously the most convenient way for them to travel around in their present state.

There are other theories about orbs as well. One would be that they are a separate life form all together and are undetectable to the human eye because of their finer tissue. The other theory that I have read about is that they could be nature spirits. Most especially tree spirits. They are said to come out particularly at night when the tree is at rest and return when they are needed. Hey, I’m just telling you what I have read.  :)

Kinds of Ghosts

Ectoplasm, Ecto-mist, vapor, ghostly mist

Appearance & Characteristics: Cloudy vaporous mist

The term was originally used to describe the substance that oozed from spirit mediums during a séance from days gone by. It is now associated and referred to as a mist or fog, and it usually displays a swirl effect within a vaporous cloud. It normally appears several feet off the ground and can linger or travel quickly at will. It's usual colors are gray, white or black but has also been seen and photographed in several other colors.

Ecto has been caught on both video & all types of cameras. It's important to note however, that a camera can inadvertently create this effect artificially in cold weather by a person exhaling to close to the lens when taking the picture. The exhaled breath looks similar to ectoplasm but without the swirls. Oh, and we certainly don't want to be smoking during a ghost hunt for obvious reasons.

Locations spotted: All locations but most generally spotted outdoors and most particularly at cemeteries, battlefields & historical sites.

Speculations: Believed by many to be the soul or spirit of those that have passed on from this life. It has been speculated that the spirit will transform to this vaporous state before appearing as a full-bodied apparition.

Facts and Trivia / Re: Phantom Time Hypothesis
June 11, 2012, 02:14:35 PM
Another way to check the date of things is to go by the stars, which are not susceptible to falsification by ambitious emperors and clerics. Unfortunately, the debate is still on as to whether written accounts of such phenomena as eclipses are accurate-â€" or whether historians eager to correct their own timelines have been grasping at straws. 'This looks like Halley's comet, so it must have been that year...' The jury is still out as to whether this information can clear up the question. The research required would be massive.

Another objection to the Phantom Time Hypothesis is that Europe did not exist in a vacuum. If someone had changed the calendar, wouldn't anyone else-â€" say the Muslims?-â€" have noticed? It is hard to say. Some areas of early Islamic history might actually be simplified by the discovery that the Western dates had been altered. It might explain inscriptions on early Islamic coins-â€" the ones that showed Muhammed meeting with a Persian emperor who supposedly died a century before. Similar claims are made about 'missing time' in Jewish records. Another possible means of comparison would be Chinese history-â€" which is notably long, with accurate astronomical observations. All these areas would require an enormous amount of research either to validate or refute the theory, research that is unlikely to be undertaken by anyone not interested in rewriting the timeline.

A theory is a theory because it is not an undisputed fact. A theory is a possible explanation. Does the Phantom Time Hypothesis fit this description? Yes. Could it be definitively proven/disproven? Possibly. Is anyone interested enough to do the research? Time will tell.

How Many Holes Are There in This Theory?

It's a very simple question, isn't it? How could anyone insert time into a chronology? We know how much time has passed since the death of Caesar, right? We can prove this independently? Let us see.

One way to check the date of things is by using radiocarbon dating to determine the age of artefacts. Detractors of the Phantom Time Hypothesis point this out, and say, 'Pish and tosh. We know how old things are from carbon dating.' The problem with this: radiocarbon dating uses dendrochronology to calibrate itself, and dendrochronology has a few problems of its own.

Dendrochronology is dating things by examining tree rings. Trees lay down rings season by season. This growth varies according to prevailing conditions. If enough is known about the age of the tree, its location, conditions, etc, the wood can be used for dating. Problems: there are not many trees that are old enough; there are not many trees of the same species; wood from buildings may have been lying around for a long time, may have been reused, etc. It turns out that dendrochronologists have been using written sources to help 'correct' their timelines.

This might be a problem if we want to use dendrochronology to correct a written source.
