Filipino Benedict Carandang, who is currently a Chevening scholar at the University of Westminster in the United Kingdom, has another feather in his cap: “Young Global Leader for 2012, one of 191 so honored by the Switzerland-based World Economic Forum.

Carandang, 30, is pursuing an MBA degree. The prestigious Chevening Scholarship Programme is under the UK’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO).

He was nominated for the Young Global Leaders honor for his work promoting the creative industries in the Philippines.

The WEF recognizes up to 200 outstanding young leaders from around the world for their professional accomplishments, commitment to society and potential to contribute to shaping the future of the world.

Past YGLs include the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, David Cameron.

At just 24, Carandang co-founded Tuldok Animation Studios, a social enterprise that aims to promote creative talent in the Philippines through animation.

Since then, he has become a champion of the country's creative industries and has been recognized for his work through awards in 2008 from the British Council's International Young Creative Entrepreneur for Screen scheme.

In 2009 he was awarded the Most Inspiring Young Entrepreneur by the Philippine Centre for Entrepreneurship..

Carandang said: "It is a great honour to be bestowed with this recognition by the World Economic Forum while I'm a Chevening Scholar of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. I have a lot to thank the UK for opening my horizons about the positive impact of the Creative Economy, on how it can help effect change and perhaps even become a catalyst in my country by creating more jobs using the talent and entrepreneurship of my countrymen.

”As a previous winner of the British Council International Young Creative Entrepreneur for Screen in 2008 and a finalist in the UK competition, I am grateful for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office for yet again giving me the prestigious Chevening Scholarship award which enabled me to pursue higher education in the UK and without a doubt, both of these accolades has made an impact on the selection committee along with my other achievements in the Philippines on why I was chosen as a Young Global Leader for 2012."

Carandang said he hoped he could use his knowledge from the Westminster MBA in continuing his work, helping support his social enterprise and as part of his commitment to helping to shape the global future with the Young Global Leaders community around the world.

The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) had filed contempt charges against world boxing champion and Sarangani Rep. Manny Pacquiao for failing to present his tax records to the agency.

BIR Commissioner Kim Henares told The STAR that Pacquiao is facing contempt charges but not tax evasion charges.

The BIR, through the agency’s regional director Rozil Lozares, issued a Letter of Authority to the boxing icon requiring him to submit documents to the agency regarding his earnings and corresponding tax payments.

Filipino boy, 7, dies of AIDS
By Sheila Crisostomo (The Philippine Star)

A seven-year-old boy, who had contracted the AIDS virus while he was still in his mother’s womb, died of the disease last January, the Department of Health (DOH) reported yesterday.

In its Philippines HIV and AIDS Registry, the DOH said the boy was one of 208 new AIDS cases recorded two months ago.

The DOH said the cases for the month of January were 39 percent higher than the 152 cases monitored in January 2011.

“Most of the cases (96 percent) were males. The median age was 27 years old (the range is between 7 to 56). The 20 to 29 years old age group had the most number of cases with 61 percent. Fifty-eight percent (123) of the reported cases were from the National Capital Region,” the DOH noted.

The other regions that accounted for a significant number of new HIV cases were Calabarzon, Central Luzon, Davao, Western Visayas and Central Visayas.

Social Welfare and Development Secretary Corazon “Dinky” Juliano Soliman has expressed optimism that total poverty alleviation could be attained by 2016.

Sec. Soliman, in reply to a question asked during the Communications and News Exchange (CNEX) Forum on Wednesday, March 07, 2012, at the Philippine Information Agency Conference Room in Quezon City, said the goal of the Millennium Development Program is to attain for 16 percent Filipinos to be below the poverty line by 2015. She said as of now, their (DSWD’s) assessment is that 26 percent are still below the poverty line.

”In the latest SWS survey Filipinos who rated themselves as poor decreased by 7 percent from 52 percent to 47 percent,” she claimed.

According to the chief social worker, she finds optimism among the poor in her personal dealings with them whenever she goes around the metropolis and the provinces where she brushes elbows with them.

She also based her own optimism in attaining full poverty alleviation on her experiences with the poor in the implementation of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (Conditional Cash Transfer(CCT), where the beneficiaries expressed satisfaction and see their future to be bright, believing that one day they would be free from the clutches of poverty.

Make your home healthy, eco-friendly and livable with indoor gardening.

Anahad Oconnor of scitimes@nytimes.com says exposure to plants relieves stress and boosts immunity.

“This time of the year, allergies and the promise of air-conditioning tend to drive people indoors. But for those who take the heat and cope with the pollen, spending time in nature might have some surprising health benefits. In a series of studies, scientists found that when people swap their concrete confines for a few hours in more natural surroundingsâ€"forests, parks and other places with plenty of treesâ€"they experience increased immune function.

“Stress reduction is one factor. But scientists also chalk up to phytoncides, the airborne chemical that plants emit to protect them from rotting and from insects, which also seems to benefit humans.

The Philippine government assured on Tuesday that the closing down of the country's Consular offices in selected countries will not affect its diplomatic relations with them.

Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda, in a news briefing, said that the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has to shut down some of its offices abroad because of the Aquino government's austerity measures and low activities at these offices.

"There will be no effect, closing down of Consular offices is internal to us, so there is no effect on them (concerned countries) , as long as we have presence there...we have diplomatic relations. The diplomatic relations is not diminished by the cutting down of Consular offices in their countries," he said.

Lacierda made it clear that despite the closure of the Consular offices, the government will still prioritize its efforts on attending to the overseas Filipino workers' (OFW's) concerns in foreign lands, and "we're going to have more mobile consular officials" in areas with a large number of Filipino overseas workers.

The DFA has said that 10 foreign service posts will be closed down this year, which include Philippine Consular Offices in Koror in Palau; Caracas in Venezuela; Barcelona in Spain; Stockholm in Sweden; in Dublin, Ireland; Frankfurt, Germany; Havana, Cuba; Saipan; Bucharest, Romania and Helsinki in Finland.

facebook is really good and effective and amazing in connecting with friends and relatives, but somehow some people have become excessive in the way they brag about themselves to the point that it is already annoying.

forum sites, like tubagbohol or www.thaivisa.com/forum, exist for a different purpose, that is to share information in a way that would make people think, laugh, cry, or even mad. and if you posted something in 2007 you can always go back to that post and update it, all under one thread, and in an organized manner.

Simply put, China has three core strategic interests.

Paramount among them is the maintenance of domestic security. Historically, when China involves itself in global trade, as it did in the 19th and early 20th century, the coastal region prospers, while the interior of China -- which begins about 100 miles from the coast and runs about 1,000 miles to the west -- languishes. Roughly 80 percent of all Chinese citizens currently have household incomes lower than the average household income in Bolivia. Most of China's poor are located west of the richer coastal region; this disparity of wealth time and again has exposed tensions between the interests of the coast and those of the interior. After a failed rising in Shanghai in 1927, Mao Zedong exploited these tensions by undertaking the Long March into the interior, raising a peasant army and ultimately conquering the coastal region. He shut China off from the international trading system, leaving China more united and equal, but extremely poor. - full article

Labor Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz is now advising some 100,000 unemployed Filipino nurses in the country to try their luck in the booming business process outsourcing  industry or call centers which she said had “non-traditional” health-related aspects.

Baldoz was referring to an array of non-clinical but medical-related information outsourcing opportunities such as medical transcriptionists, billers and health care secretaries, that provide alternatives for those seeking careers in the healthcare industry.

“With the fast-growing and innovative trends and advancements in the healthcare industry, I encourage you to go out-of-the-box, beyond the traditional clinical jobs, and explore other emerging medical and health-related careers that are needed by our labor market today,” Baldoz said.
