How did the Higgs boson get the nickname "the God particle"?

A Nobel laureate physicist from Fermilab called Leon Lederman wrote a book in the early 1990s about the search for the Higgs boson. His publishers coined the name as a marketable title for the book, but it's disliked by many scientists.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/
#32431
How is the Higgs boson related to the Big Bang?

About 13.7 billion years ago, the Big Bang gave birth to the universe and caused an outburst of massless particles and radiation energy. Scientists think that fractions of a second later, part of the radiation energy congealed into the Higgs field.

When the universe began to cool, particles acquired mass from the Higgs field, slowed down and began to bunch up to form composite particles and, eventually, atoms.

Conditions present a billionth of a second after the Big Bang are recreated in the Large Hadron Collider particle accelerator near Geneva.
#32432
Like other heavy particles, the Higgs decays into lighter particles, which then decay into even lighter ones. The process can follow a certain number of paths, which depend on the particle's mass.

Physicists compare the decay paths they observe after a particle collision to predicted decay paths simulated with computers. When a match is found, it suggests that the observed particle is the one being searched for.
#32433
How do you find a Higgs boson?

To find the particle and characterise it, scientists must first try to create it by smashing beams of protons together inside the Large Hadron Collider at close to the speed of light and analysing the debris.

By doing so they will essentially be recreating a very small model of the state of the Universe as it was in the first trillionth of a second after the Big Bang.

Some of the fragments released by the collision should in theory be Higgs Bosons, although they will instantly deteriorate into even smaller, more stable subatomic particles.
#32434
How long has the search gone on?

Scientists have been looking for the Higgs since the 1960s, but the search began in earnest more than 20 years ago with early experiments at Cern in Europe and Fermilab in the US.

Does finding the Higgs boson mark the end of the search?

It's just the end of the beginning. Confirming the existence of the Higgs would only be the start of a new era of particle physics as scientists focus on understanding how it works and look for unexpected phenomena.
#32435
What would the world be like without the Higgs boson?

According to the Standard Model theory, it would not be recognisable. Without something to give mass to the basic building blocks of matter, everything would behave as light does, floating freely and not combining with other particles. Ordinary matter, as we know it, would not exist.

Higgs boson: Q&A

More than 50 years ago Peter Higgs and five other theoretical physicists proposed that an invisible field lying across the Universe gives particles their mass, allowing them to clump together to form stars and planets.

By Nick Collins, Science Correspondent
The Telegraph, UK
04 Jul 2012

What is the Higgs boson and the Higgs field?

The Higgs field has been described as a kind of cosmic "treacle" spread through the universe.

According to Prof Higgs's 1964 theory, the field interacts with the tiny particles that make up atoms, and weighs them down so that they do not simply whizz around space at the speed of light.

But in the half-century following the theory, produced independently by the six scientists within a few months of each other, nobody has been able to prove that the Higgs Field really exists.

Prof Higgs predicted that the field would have a signature particle, a massive boson. Finding it would point towards the existence of the field.

"The hardest part of the mural was painting the whole image with a slight perspective shift," Kristofoletti told Discovery News via email. "The detector appears closer on the left and farther on the right side of the mural.

"The actual signature of the Higgs event was the most exciting thing to paint since it is actually depicting something that is invisible."

But what inspired him to create such a mural in the first place?

"It is a more complicated project than the moon landing. So, I am in awe of finding something that is so fundamental to understanding where we came from," he added.

As we are fast approaching a major announcement from CERN about the quest to track down the elusive Higgs boson, it seems like an appropriate time to showcase Kristofoletti's 2010 work of art through a time-lapse video he recently uploaded.

Higgs Boson Quest Inspires Epic LHC Art

Analysis by Ian O'Neill
Wed Jul 4, 2012

In 2010, Discovery News' Jennifer Ouelette reported on a cool project that artist Josef Kristofoletti had embarked upon. Inspired by the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and one of its huge detectors, he began work on a mural of the ATLAS detector... on the side of the ATLAS control room (commissioned by CERN, of course). The 25-meter high ATLAS is one of the two LHC detectors that are hunting for the Higgs, and we'll hear results from ATLAS physicists via a special webcast on Wednesday at 9 a.m. CEST -- that's at 3 a.m. EST or midnight PST.

#If you must leave your key with a valet, attendant, or mechanic, leave only the ignition key. Make sure you are dealing with a reputable firm.

#In high theft areas the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) should be etched on windows, doors, fenders and trunk lid. This makes it difficult for a thief to market your stolen car parts.

#Copy your license plate and vehicle information (VIN) numbers on a card and keep them with you. If your vehicle is stolen, the police will need this information to take a report.

#Many vehicles today come with some type of security system from the factory. Normally there are upgraded systems available if you ask. The best choices are systems that shut off the fuel supply so that a car can’t be started or driven.

#If your vehicle is stolen, report it to the police immediately.

Note: VIN â€" is a unique serial number used by the automotive industry to identify individual motor vehicles

#Always park in high-traffic, well-lighted areas, when possible.

#Install a mechanical device that locks the steering wheel, column, or brakes.

#Investigate the purchase of a vehicle theft tracking/security system, especially if you own one of the frequently-stolen vehicles.

#Never leave personal identification documents, vehicle ownership title, or credit cards in your vehicle.

more tips:

#Never leave your car unlocked, or running, even to dash into a business shop for just a second.

#Never leave keys in the car or ignition, inside a locked garage, or in hide-a-key boxes.

#Always roll up your windows and lock the car, even if it is parked in front of your home.

Never leave valuables in plain view, even if your car is locked. Put them in the trunk out-of-sight.

Vatican, Monaco still on list of unsafe places for OFWs

Philippine Daily Inquirer
Tuesday, July 3rd, 2012

Is even the center of Catholicism now unsafe for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs)?

Not really, it simply appears to be a case of the bureaucracy at workâ€"or not.

The Vatican is among 19 countriesâ€"including Monaco, North Korea, Zimbabwe and Afghanistanâ€"that have yet to be certified as safe for OFW deployment by the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), the Department of Labor and Employment said Monday.

Labor Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz said the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) governing board had approved 32 countriesâ€"including Kuwait and Saudi Arabiaâ€"for inclusion in the list of countries compliant with the safety requirements of the amended Migrant Workers and Overseas Filipinos Act.

This has left 19 countries that have yet to be certified as being safe for OFWs. Of the 19, the POEA has yet to receive the certifications for the Vatican and Monaco, Baldoz said.

She said the 32 countries were certified as safe for OFWs after the Congressional Committee on Overseas Welfare Affairs asked the DFA to consider “partially compliant” countries as being “compliant without prejudice to negotiations for the protection of household service workers.”

The 19 countries that have yet to pass the POEA board review, aside from the Vatican and Monaco, were Afghanistan, Chad, Cuba, North Korea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iraq, Lebanon, Libya, Mali, Mauritania, Nepal, Niger, Palestine, Somalia, Uzbekistan and  Zimbabwe.

Under the Migrant Workers and Overseas Filipino Act, the DFA has to certify countries as having adequate protections for OFWs, with the certification approved by the POEA board, before deployment can take place. Philip C. Tubeza

Poisonous fish trivia

Most venomous fish come from the Indo-Pacific, off eastern and southern Africa, Australia, Polynesia, the Philippines, Indonesia and southern Japan. About 50,000 people a year suffer from stings, or envenomations, with an array of symptoms like pain, fainting, blisters, fever, convulsions, breathing trouble and sometimes even death.

Farmer dies, four neighbors fall ill after eating ‘dalapugan’ fish

Cebu Daily News
Friday, June 29th, 2012

A FARMER in Oslob town, southern Cebu died while four others fell ill after they ate fish locally known as dalapugan.

Police identified the fatality as Epitacio Ferrolino, 37, a resident of barangay Cansaloay.

The fish itself is not a poisonous variety and it’s possible that the fish was spoiled or had eaten something poisonous, said PO3 Nelson Saquibal of the Oslob police in Cebuano.

Epitacio ate the internal organs of the fish which was cooked in vinegar as inun-onan.

His neighbor Max Filosopo, 35, bought it from the Oslob public market around 10 a.m. last Tuesday.

He invited Epitacio and his 22-year-old pregnant wife Angelita, Epitacio’s 65-year-old mother Consuelo, and Juanita Estinor, 62, to his house for lunch.

About an hour after the lunch, Filosopo and his neighbors started vomiting.

As a remedy, they drank native medicinal oil locally known as “lana.”

Their condition improved after they drank lots of water.

Epitacio continued vomiting until 3 p.m when he could no longer talk and his hands went numb, said police.

He was brought by his neighbors to the Oslob District Hospital around 9 p.m. where he was pronounced dead by Dr. Gina Javier.

Police said they are still waiting for the result of the medical examination to determine the cause of death.

Police recovered a small portion of the inun-onan meal which was submitted to the Bureau of Food and Drugs for examination. /REPORTER RHEA RUTH V. ROSELL

hostile.  i know my cats.  they don't stand (on their hind legs) if they're friendly.  they simply smell and clean each other.  this one's getting ready for a catfight, on the defensive, keeping each other at paw's length.  and their ears!  when cat ears tilt backward, prepare.  those ears speak of wars to come.  but there's a balance of power here, unlike the philippines and a rampaging 800-lb gorilla of a neighboring country wanting to make a bathtub out of the west philippine sea.

thanks for the warning.  di bitaw ko moabli sa mga threads dinhi nga medyo lisod ang title ug sa akong banabana di nako makaya, pareha atong sinugba nga iro o unsa ba uroy to.

i hope for more appropriate thoughtful warnings here because of our differences in capacity to take in horrific realities.

fugu (butete) in japanese poetry (haiku)

I cannot see her tonight
I have to give her up
So I will eat fugu

Having eaten fugu soup
Even though there also was sea bream
How irrational he was

The Japanese Emperor is forbidden from even touching fugu. In the Edo period (1603-1867) samurai were ordered to extinguish their family lines if they became poisoned.

Shimonoseki on the southern tip of Honshu is particularly famous for fugu. About 500 fugu chef's live here. There is a bronze monument of a fugu in front of the fish market. There are even fugu pictured on the city's manhole covers.

Every February people pray for a good puffer catch before a special shrine and fishermen send the Emperor a fugu as a gift. A local tourist brochure reads: "In the past, eating fugu was an adventure risking one's life."

fugu (butete) trivia in japan

Fugu bones have been found in burial mounds from the Jomon period (10,000 B.C. to 300 B.C.). Fugu was mentioned in Japan's first historical records, written in 720.

In the late 1500s, fugu was banned by Toyotomi Hideyoshi after a mass poisoning of troops took place before an invasion of Korea. The ban remained in place for 200 years until, one story goes, Japan's first prime minister Hirobumu Ito ate some and survived and enjoyed it so much he demanded that the ban be lifted.
