Aquabest, the flagship bottled water brand of GQWEST Inc., has joined efforts of the United Nations to ensure universal access to safe and clean water.

Carson Tan, CEO of GQWEST Inc., said this as the company observes the observance of World Water Day (WWD) of the UN.

Established in 2005 with an advocacy of “water for life”, WWD is a decade long initiative of the United Nations to ensure universal access to safe and clean water. From 2005 to 2015, the UN would like to highlight the magnitude of the problem, but also to bring all stakeholders together to apply solutions that work.

"By giving everyone the right to clean water, it is hoped that one of the root causes of poverty and disease can be addressed," Tan said.

Being the leading player in the water franchising industry, Tan said, they are aware of the significance but also of the scale of the water problem.

“When we started in the 1990’s the lack of clean and potable drinking water was a major problem and a significant contributor to the growth of the water refilling industry. Since then, the situation has drastically improved but 58 percent of our water remains contaminated. This ultimately means that millions of Filipinos still have to suffer from the diseases and problems posed by a lack of clean water. “

Network giant GMA-7 has taken the cudgels for their beleaguered broadcaster, Arnold Clavio, in the brouhaha that came after he lambasted the Philippine football team Azkals in a morning show.

In an official statement, the network said they did not find anything “discriminatory, libelous and malicious” in Clavio’s statements. The network deems Clavio was within the boundaries of his rights when he shared his opinion of the team.

GMA-7 insisted that the PFF simply missed the point of the discussion.

“Iba ang naging intindi ng Philippine Football Federation sa mga sinabi ni Arnold,” part of the statement read. “Ang pinapatungkulan ni Arnold ay hindi kung Filipino citizen o kung may lahing Pilipino ang mga Azkals kundi kung naisapuso at naisaisip ba nila ang kulturang Pinoy.”

As seen on a video footage posted on YouTube, Clavio called the Azkals "insensitive," relating to what he alleged was the team’s insufficient if unsatisfactory apology to Cristy Ramos regarding the latter’s complaint of sexual harassment against team members Lexton Moy and Angel Guirado.

"Ang yayabang niyo. Porke't dinadagsa kayo ng mga [fans] ang guguwapo ni'yo, ‘di ba?. Parang God's gift to women,” said he.

As for the team’s apology to Ramos, he said, “Palusot na lang ‘yon. Sana kung nag-sorry, sorry na lang talaga."

Clavio went on to assail some members of the team, thus:  "Eh, hindi naman kayo Filipino, nagpapanggap lang kayong kayumanggi, hindi dito lumaki. Mahirap 'yon, insensitive.”

More, he said, "Alam naman nila' yung mga ‘sexcapades’ nila sa isa't isa, sino ang nag-penicillin, alam naman nila 'yan."

After several fans latched onto his seething comments against the team, as seen on several posts made on Twitter, Youtube and Facebook, Clavio asked the public for "understanding," saying he didn't intend to come off as prejudiced against the Azkals.

The Philippine real estate market is generally stable but the residential segment may face “risks arising from oversupply,” according to the World Bank.
The World Bank also said the shift toward non-bank financing required careful monitoring of the developers’ exposure.
In the Philippines, households tend to have greater preference for holding wealth in the form of real estate rather than equities.
A report from state-run think tank Philippine Institute for Development Studies says ownership of dwellings and real estate has been growing steadily at high single-digit rates from 2006 to 2011 except for a relatively low 4.1 percent growth in 2009.

Letter by Amitabh Khosla, IATA’s Country Director, India
Published in the Business Standard on 14 February 2012

India’s carriers are hurting.  This is partly a result of the lack of joined-up policies across government ministries. Indian aviation has deep-rooted problems that need comprehensive and coordinated solutions, and high aviation turbine fuel (ATF) pricing is certainly the most urgent.

Hence, the proposal of the Group of Ministers (GoM) to allow domestic Indian carriers to directly import ATF is certainly a welcome development.  Airlines need to be allowed to function as normal businesses which have the same commercial freedoms as any other business entity.  But the GoM proposal is only a first step, albeit small, towards untangling the maze of regulations which confounds India’s airline industry.

There are two main causes for the high fuel price which need to be addressed:
• The high state sales tax which is 20-30% on the base price of ATF; and
• The lack of effective competition among the ATF suppliers.

On average fuel accounts for 30% of an airline’s operating costs. For Indian carriers it is 45%. Even in a good yearâ€"as aviation experienced in 2010, airlines struggled to make a 2.9% margin on an industrywide basis. For India’s airlines, carrying the cost burden of an extra 25% on average, on fuel is simply not sustainable in a ferociously competitive industry. It is akin to sending a boxer into the ring with his hands tied.  There is indeed no public policy benefit to the Indian economy by keeping aviation fuel prices high.

The GoM’s proposal to allow Indian carriers to import ATF is though not the silver bullet that will solve the woes of the carriers.  Nonetheless, it can potentially bring relief to the high price of ATF, provided the imported ATF is not subjected to state sales tax, or any other similar new tax.
But one other important step that is needed for India is to introduce effective competition among ATF suppliers.  The three Public Service Undertaking (PSU) oil suppliers in India have market dominance, primarily because they control key ATF supply infrastructure at airports, such as fuel storage facilities and pipelines.  The barrier to entry for another ATF supplier is high as it is not economically feasible to have duplicated supply infrastructure.  The result is limited or no competition as the PSU oil companies are unlikely to allow airlines or other competitors access to the infrastructure, or do so at a reasonable price, unless the government or the Competition Commission of India (CCI) mandates this.

We see this at two of India’s largest airports.  Delhi Airport still does not have any new ATF suppliers despite seemingly providing open access and having a  common-use facility at the airport, while new entrants at Mumbai Airport have not gained access (at efficient prices) to the fuel pipelines owned by oil PSUs. The experience in India’s power and telecom industries tells us that fair and reasonable access for third parties to essential infrastructure facilities can promote effective competition. This can be the same for ATF supply.  But the government needs to establish  a right of access by third party suppliers to ATF infrastructure in order to inject a more competitive ATF supply market at Indian airports.

India has enormous potential for growth and for aviation to play an even bigger role in the economy. But as we have seen over these last months it faces many challenges. India can be a great market for aviation and that aviation can contribute tremendously to India’s economic development. But this will only happen if some big hurdles are overcome. Much could be overcome by developing government policies that allow airlines simply to get on with the business of providing connectivity.

No matter how you look at 2012, it will be a difficult yearâ€"for airlines and for the economy in general. Managing through these difficult times would be made a lot easier if government’sâ€"including India’sâ€"better-appreciated aviation’s role as an economic catalyst. Then decisions on aviation policy could be taken with full-knowledge of their impact beyond the industry to the overall economy.

In a nutshell, the GoM’s proposals are a step in the right direction. But let’s take bolder steps: ‘declare’ the key fuel infrastructure currently owned by the  PSU suppliers.  And urgently establish a National Access Regime for ATF to allow users, including airlines, access to critical fuel infrastructure at a reasonable price.

Commentary by Tony Tyler, IATA’s Director General & CEO
Published in Air Transport World (ATW) online news on 1 March 2012

The past decade has seen a dramatic transformation of the air transport industry. Cost and
unnecessary complexity have been removed in response to soaring fuel prices, new business
models and the opportunities presented by the internet and mobile revolutions. Acting at the
behest of our members, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) took a leading role in
many of these developments through our Simplifying the Business (StB) initiative.
Through StB, processes have been re-engineered to eliminate waste and redundancy, while
passengers have been empowered by technology like automated airport kiosks and web check
in. Paper boarding passes may go the way of the paper ticket as increasing numbers of
customers embrace the convenience of e-boarding passes, delivered through smart phones.
One part of the business has remained largely immune to this relentless tide of technological
and process innovation. That is the IT infrastructure powering the Global Distribution Systems
(GDSs) which handle well-over half of ticket sales worldwide. Compared to the dramatic
changes that aviation has been through, today’s travel agent terminal has not evolved much in
form or functionality since the 1970s.

The GDS is an excellent tool for displaying fares and schedules. But adapting it to the
emergence of fare unbundling and airline merchandizing has proved difficult. As airline
customers demand more choices, carriers are responding with products such as lounge access,
premium seating and preferred boarding. The inability of GDSs to display these enhancements
properly, however, is a real barrier to innovation and to the industry’s ability to generate a return
on its investments. GDS limitations force the commoditization of airline products. Yield potential
is not realized because consumer choice is reduced to what appears on a standard display of
time, class and price. Innovations which don’t fit neatly into these parameters, the Air New
Zealand Skycouch, for example, can only be offered on airline websites.

A recent report by Amadeus and IdeaWorks estimated that ancillary revenues were worth $32.5
billion last year, while L.E.K. Consulting forecasts such revenues will exceed $50 billion annually
by 2015 as airlines develop full-fledged merchandizing programs. But to make this happen,
airlines need to be able to display their products to all their customers--not just those who shop
on their websites--and in a manner that is consistent with the airline’s brand, product and selling
proposition. That is why, at the direction of our Board of Governors, IATA has launched a new StB initiative to develop the standards and infrastructure for an XML-based common interface that may be used by all. We are working with all stakeholders, including GDSs on this project. With a new
distribution model, customers will be able to access all the products and fares on offer, in the
most transparent and open way, regardless of channel.

Airlines value their relationships with the GDSs. But they have not delivered innovation in line
with airline needs. Although there are signs this may be changing, the historical fact is that the
strength and ubiquity of the GDS system has stifled the development of alternative channels.
Meanwhile, travel agents are locked into long-term agreements that make switching suppliers
difficult and give GDSs little incentive to compete with one another. These contracts may also
forbid the agency from establishing a direct channel to an airline. Airlines pay a price for this
lack of competition in the form of ever rising transaction fees that appear immune to general
economic conditions or Moore’s Law.

With an IATA-led XML-based “direct connect” link, customers will enjoy the same autonomy,
choice and selection in their travel purchases that they have across a spectrum of consumer
products, from mobile phones to automobiles. Airlines can personalize their products based on
their customers’ travel patterns and buying habits, as occurs in other consumer industries.
Direct connect will also encourage market entry by companies that may not yet exist, and that is
a good thing; because the airline industry cannot afford to spend another 40 years with its main
distribution system frozen in amber.

Joe Lacob grew up in New Bedford, Massachusetts. His father worked at a paper products company, his mother at a local supermarket. Lacob became a fan of the Boston Celtics. When Lacob was 14, the company that employed his father was sold, firing everyone except his dad, and Lacob's family relocated to Anaheim, California. Lacob subsequently became a fan of the Los Angeles Lakers and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

Lacob received a Bachelor's in Biological Sciences from the University of California, Irvine (UCI), a Master's in Public Health (epidemiology) from University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and an M.B.A. from the Stanford Graduate School of Business [5] "I was a very poor kid," Lacob said. "Had nothing. I paid every dime of my education through college. Every single dime. I was the first person to graduate from college in the history of my family. Ever. I came from nothing."

IQ (intelligence quotient) testing is a series of exams used to determine your general intelligence in relation to other people the same age.

Information
Many IQ tests are used today, and whether they measure actual intelligence or simply certain abilities continues to be controversial. IQ tests measure a specific functioning ability and may not accurately assess a person's talents or future potential. Results of any intelligence test may be culturally biased.

The Wechsler test and the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scales (SC) are the most standardized and widely used exams. Average test results range from 90 - 110:

A score below 70 indicates mental retardation.
A person who scores 130 or higher is usually considered gifted, although different programs set different levels for this classification.
A person with a score of 145-160 is usually classified as highly advanced or very gifted.
A person with a score of 165 or higher is usually classified a genius.

Science and Research / Secret to a High IQ Baby
March 20, 2012, 10:54:10 AM
by PNA

Should your baby be fed according to a schedule or on demand? A new study suggests that demand-feeding is associated with higher IQ scores, but a casual link can not be decided so far.

Researchers at the University of Essex and University of Oxford reported that they investigated data of more than 10,000 children born in the early 1990s in the Bristol area in Britain.

The IQ scores of eight-year-old children who had been demand-fed as babies were between four and five points higher than the scores of schedule-fed children, says the study published in the European Journal of Public Health.

This difference is also evident in the results of tests at ages five, seven, 11 and 14 when the children were in school.

Lead researcher Maria Iacovou, at University of Essex, said: "The difference between schedule and demand-fed children is found both in breastfed and in bottle-fed babies."

"To give a sense of the kind of difference that four or five higher IQ points might make, in a class of 30 children, for example, a child who is right in the middle of the class, ranked at 15th, might be, with an improvement of four or five IQ points, ranked higher, at about 11th or 12th in the class."

However, she stressed that at this stage, it should be very cautious about claiming a casual link between feeding patterns and IQ.

"This is the first and only study of its kind, and further research is needed before we can say categorically that how you feed your baby has a long-term impact on his or her IQ and academic attainment, and before we can say definitively what the mechanisms are by which this relationship comes about," she added.

World Daily News / The war in Afghanistan
March 20, 2012, 10:46:23 AM
By George Friedman | March 20, 2012

The war in Afghanistan has been under way for more than 10 years. It has not been the only war fought during this time; for seven of those years another, larger war was waged in Iraq, and smaller conflicts were under way in a number of other countries as well. But the Afghanistan War is still the longest large-scale, multi-divisional war fought in American history. An American soldier's killing of 16 Afghan civilians, including nine children, on March 11 represents only a moment in this long war, but it is an important moment.

In the course of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, military strategists in the United States developed the concept of the long war. The theory was presented in many ways, but its core argument was this: The defeat of Taliban forces and the Iraqi resistance would take a long time, but success would not end the war because Islamist terrorism and its supporters would be a constantly shifting threat, both in the places and in the ways they would operate. Therefore, since it was essential to defeat terrorism, the United States was now engaging in a long war whose end was distant and course unknown.

Globe Tattoo vs Smartbro
A lot of people have been telling me that Globe Tattoo is really fast even in remote towns of Bohol. These people have used both Smartbro and Globe Tattoo and they have concluded that Smartbro sucks while Globe is amazingly fast.

What is your experience with Smartbro or Globe Tattoo?
