Choices by: David Bancroft

So many choices one must make,
Walking down life's rocky road,
Starting with steps of innocence all take,
With loving parents, who bare the load,

Knowledge gained as one grows,
As the questions never end to learn more,
With the teen years going from highs to lows,
In the identity and self-independence war,

Then adulthood beckons with shoes or not,
As the walk going forth,
Leads to the climax of your plot,
Whether it be south or north,

Old age comes quickly once there,
Looking back for what could have been,
Pondering if all was fair,
While possibly stroking your chin.

A smile appears with watery eyes,
As your life ends its earthly stride,
Knowing the choices are all about when one dies,
Determining whether or not you sit at HIS side.

Either risk psychosis or treat parkinson's...that must be a fine line.

This really explains why some people somehow find the need to "fear" or be "mad" at something or someone. I knew this one girl here in Houston who stumbled into our circle of friends and whom we "kicked out" after some time. She always had a Phobia of someone or something. Her neighbors, one of our other friend's 13 yo son, the dog...etc. In her mind, she sees more than what is really there and she's always the poor victim in a bizarre overboard kind of way. Even jokes that she overhears about something totally unrelated, she spins it that people are making fun of her. Christ ! that was an ordeal. We just eventually stopped taking her calls or inviting her to anything. Nobody needed the drama nor the aggravation.

Background on her : broken family, abandoned by her parents, was pretty open about wanting to leave her son in the Philippines, "used" to do drugs, some gang, married an old US soldier almost 2 times her age with a son that couldv'e been her bf. Good riddance!

This is called paranoid personality disorder, Alc, your friend should really get medical help. She seems to have some kind of borderline personality disorder with paranoid mood.

Kanang magpasakit ka for any reason except self defense is just disgusting. Makagaba gyud kung sa ato pa. Not to mention the implications nga basin kung unsa tong iyang gibuhat sa mga animals, sa taw nasad to sunod just for the thrill of it.

This is actually very accurate, my dear. Serial killers have been studied by psychiatrists and clinical psychologists and what they did find out is that the mannerisms of these individuals started early. Violence towards animals was the warning sign, which indicated their deviation in the concept of right and wrong, particularly in regards to life (in general, animal, human etc).

Serial killers who are imprisoned all have this common ground; that their tendency to violence started early. Animals first, then worked its way to humans. There is a great book that you should read, it is a required book for medical students who take Medical Psychiatry in 2nd year, I must recommend it to you as you have an amazing command of the subject. You will like it.

do you really know what it is you talk about, lorenzo?  it seems to me as if you missed the mark of what bai hubag is trying to say, like mistaking the forest for the trees.

i can only credit your youth, though sometimes, trying too hard to impress brings forth the stirrings not of a revolution in the league of the french one but the loss of contact with reality.

On the contrary, it is all about reason. Hubag talks about his inability to reason or his disinclination in that, rather, defends the notion of dreams and dreaming, then again, that is his own personal choice, which is respectable by men such as I. There is nothing wrong with a dreamer, to dream is to live one's fantasy, as they say.

However, I merely implemented a medical addition; in that there are those who dream and never awake from their dreams; or perhaps i should change that to nightmare. Individuals who are schizophrenics or those who suffer from mental illness suffer from a loss of reality.

As for the inclusion of European Enlightenment, it merely illustrates my view that reason, is not a weakness, nor is it negative, rather has led to the development of societal advances, and undoubtedly contributed to the democratic pluralism that has taken hold of society at large (for the most part that is, he he). In regards to reason and choice; well, i must say that it is reason that allows us all to make an informed decision and choice in any matter.

Reason and truth both in the same playing field. My view. :)

“Reason is the slow and torturous method by which those who do not know the truth discover it”
Blaise Pascal

Cheers, Ms. Isles.

PS. Let not youth or lack of age bring prejudice to understanding. Love you!

To reason is to compromise and understand. The dreamer does not reason, he has lost all reality, rather, lives in his own dreams.

The beauty of reasoning is that it shows one's ability to make a discerned choice.

Wind,

Sabong is a form of gambling; only this uses animals. It is a form of gambling/entertainment, as the Running of the bulls is a form of entertainment is in Spain; as boxing is a form of entertainment; as UFC Cage fighting is a form of entertainment, etc.

One has to differentiate mental disorder that is innate/ born with/ congenital as compared to something that is accepted by society or is endorsed by a given society.

I am not defending sabong; but i want you all to differentiate sabong as a form of gambling/ group entertainment from say people with zoophilias (people who are sexually attracted to animals) or necro-zoophilia (people who engage in sex with dead animals). These are actual psychological pathologies that many people suffer from around the world. It is a sexual paraphelia that is developed due to some kind of mental disorder. The former, sabong, is not a paraphelia, but is a form of gambling for many partakers.

When treating a mental disease; one has to understand the etiology of the disease (cause, history etc), and the implications this has. Only with this basis is understood, can we proceed with a proper mode of treatment and therapeutic strategies.

~~

You all must understand that people with mental disorders, most of them, do not know they have mental disorders because a great majority of them live their lives undiagnosed thinking that their manner of thought and perception of reality is the norm, when in actuality, it is clinical abnormal.

This is why when we deal with psychiatric patients, we have to retain clinical sensitivity and remain unbiased.

The mind, out of all our organs, is the most difficult to treat.
And the hardest to pierce into. In medicine, we can use exploratory surgery to find a tumor, or a necrotic tissue, and then treat. But when in regards psychiatric medicine, you cannot touch the mind, nor can you physically hold it. It requires the physician's acurate prowess to psychoanalyze an individual and interpret their actions to understand/indentify the underlying illness.

How To Make The Right Choice:

1. Make the decision to let God be God

Proverbs 16
We can make our own plans, but the Lord gives the right answer.

2. Study the Word of God

2 Timothy 2:15
Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

3. Surround yourself with people who are further along the journey

Corinthians 11:1
Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ. (NIV)

2 Corinthians 1:3-5
God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort. He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us. For the more we suffer for Christ, the more God will shower us with his comfort through Christ. (NLT)

4. Never give up

Hebrews 12:1-3
And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. Because of the joy awaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now he is seated in the place of honor beside God’s throne. Think of all the hostility he endured from sinful people; then you won’t become weary and give up.

I think there should be a good balance between both to move forward.

If we are not practical and reign ourselves in, we never get things done that would propel us forward.

If, on the other hand,  we are too obsessed with just dealing with the here and now and not ever entertain dreams, then we wouldn't have the drive nor persistence to achieve anything greater than what we've already got.

Thomas Edison failed more than a thousand times but persisted because he had a dream, and voila...we have the light bulb. To be more current, the inventor of Dyson vacuum cleaners was in Reader's Digest (or Playboy) recently and I read that it took him 10 years, financial struggle, etc  before achieving success.

A lot of people break under these circumstances and so they just stop dreaming. Some dont. But we need everyone to work as a society. We all have our niche's. Yours will always be different from mine... just part of the beauty of humanity !  8)

hehehe, this is an example of a wise woman. :)

Quote from: hubag bohol on May 11, 2010, 12:19:05 PM
A perfectly reasonable view indeed. But I can't help thinking that if our forebears refused to wonder about the "what ifs" of life, could we have reached the level of human development and sophistication that we enjoy today? Would we have religion, science, philosophy, art--or freedom? What do artists do best but dream? As Arthur Rimbaud extravagantly wrote: "Our ship towering in the motionless fog turns towards the port of poverty, the enormous city with a sky that’s flecked with fire and mud. Ah! The rotting rags; the bread soaked with rain, the drunkenness, the thousand loves that have crucified me!... Sometimes I see limitless beaches in the sky covered by white nations full of joy. A great golden vessel, above me, waves its multicoloured flags in the morning breeze...."

Dreamers may be ineffectual and unhappy and frustrated all their lives, but the energy that dreamers waste on "what ifs" provide sweetness and light to everyone, including those who, dictated by their astute calculations, wish to purge themselves of any trace of human frailty.

I confess to being lazy, to wasting a lot of time on "what ifs". I confess, too, that my flights of fancy never brought me fame or fortune, that if on a few occasions they ever stood me in good stead those were instances of no shining moment. Yet I insist on dreaming my life away. (In this regard, can it be that perhaps the Neanderthals became extinct because they didn't entertain the "what ifs" of life and instead concerned themselves only with the "here and now"?)

Truly, my faith in reason is quite shaky.  But as George Bernard Shaw waggishly observed, "The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable man."

:)

It was reason that brought light and democratic plurality that the great French political thinkers of the Great French Revolution such as Marat, Robespierre, Jacobins to exclaim: Liberté, égalité, fraternité!

The works of Voltaire, John Locke, Marat, Robespierre, Adams, Jefferson, Franklin etc were strengthened by the European Enlightenment, that brought Reason, Universality of Human Rights, Democracy, and Freedom from Monarchical Absolutism.

The great political thinkers claimed that revolution was reason; and claimed that the royal absolutists were unreasonable, living their dreams of aristocratic and oligarchic reverie, while the poor commoners in the Third Estate were left to pay taxes, burden the military cost, and submit themselves to absolutist control of the monarchy.

Human reason, which descends from Wisdom of the Most High and Intelligence that comes from the Holy Spirit, is what guides and directs the wise man to make a good Decision and allocate his resources to support that decision that he so fully believes in, in confidence and in Faith in Divine Understanding.

A wise decision leads to positive results; an unwise decision, will lead to doubts, and failure.

Hitler Dreamed of a Pure Third Reich ruled by Aryan Germans, and liquidated jews, homosexuals, slavs, communists, and dissenters, pro-democrats, and his decision lead to the purging of millions. His was a miserable unwise decision. That resulted in the collapse of the German Nation, and the deaths of millions.

There is a clear difference between wisdom, stupidity, dreams, fantasy, and lunacy.

Schizophrenic patients dream alot, and have lost contact with reality.
:)

Cheers.

Thanks Lorenzo !

That would explain a lot then. I've only watched Dr. Daniel Amen's spiel about his book "Change your brain, Change your life" so I get the concept of different chemicals up your melon can either make you cuckoo, reasonable or psycho.

Literally. hehe!

Amen's explanation of how chemicals can make one 'cuckoo' is true. I think to sum it up in simple terms for the public to digest and know is that there are certain hormones in the brain that permit full / normal cognitive functioning.

When individuals have excess dopamine in the brain, or take drugs that increases dopaminergic activity, this leads to psychosis or psychotic tendencies and a deviation or inhibition of cognition.

I will explain. The effects of dopamine on the body is two fold:
1. It balances cholinergic activity (skeletal flaccidity)
2. Psychosis Balance

If there is a disruption in the homoeostasis of this hormone, we will see a medical pathology.

If there is a lack of dopamine hormones, particulary as a result of the damage of the substantia nigra in the brain, this leads to a decreased output of dopamine, and leads to the development of Parkinson's Disease. This is why dopamine levels have to be balanced. When we treat parkinson's disease, we treat this by giving the patient with levidopa (a dopaminergic drug) and also give the patient anti-cholinergic drugs to mitigate the spasticity in skeletal movement as seen in parkinson's disease. But we have to make sure that the dopamine levels are balanced so that there is no excess in dopamine, since the negative side effects of excess dopamine levels is: ~ PSYCHOSIS.

Again, there is emphasis on the necessity of hormonal balance.

You have to know that any patient with mental illness ergo: Clinical Depression, Schizophrenia, Schizotypal disorders, Schitzophreniform disorders, Borderline Personality Disorders, Obsessive Compulsive Disorders have some kind of imbalance of Dopamine Hormones.

Mod of Treatment (RX): Dopaminergic blockers !
~~

Everything in moderation, bud.
The body is designed to take things only in moderation.
Excess or a deficiency in something can lead to pathology.

Cheers.

Kadtong mga rapist angay jud to presohon, cruelty is still cruelty bisan ug dili against humans.

The pleasure is all mine, Alc. And you are welcome!
It is always a pleasure to explain the processes of things, especially when it concerns my forte. ;)
I love teaching and instructing~ a broader minded public is a healthy public, especially when it concerns medical-related issues.

As for the imprisonment of individuals with sexual paraphelias, unfortunately we cannot conduct legal action unless:

1. They have physically/ verbally assaulted another person
2. Have threatened or pose a threat to minors with their present and past actions
3. Have committed an act that is against the law, and pose a threat to society in general

~~

It is why medicine and psychiatric medicine is important in providing a basis to treat and ways to treat / provide therapy for individuals with psychiatric pathologies. When it concerns psychiatric illness, it is either innate or congenitally developed. Some people that are mentally ill cannot help it or have no idea that they are ill; for them it seems normal. And the hardest thing, my dear, is to treat the mind, or get inside the mind of the individual.

That is why this is a rather sensitive and interesting issue; in the medical field and in forensics.

A. Lorenzo

What we have to get from this election is that the voice of Valencia was heard! The numbers of voters that supported the Olegario/Dango Group quite close to the Lim/Gan Group. Indicating that there was fair voter turnout, and that change was needed. The voice for change was heard.

Since elections are over, we all need to put differences aside, and partisan politics with it. We must continue to hound our elective officials for transparency and to conduct new changes that are to benefit Valencia in the:

1. Economic sector
2. Educational sector
3. Living standard sector
4. Health sector

Alc,

Prior to the advances of pharmacology and the development of therapeutic procedures in Psychopharmacology, the treatment for individuals with these tendencies, and histories, was final and irreversible: Psychosurgery.

Prior to the development of lithium salts, rivastigmine, haloperidol, benzodiazepine, diazepam, other kinds of SSRIs and Neuroleptics and Dopaminergic / Cholinergic drugs, the only mode of treatment of individuals with psychiatric problems was :

1. Total Craniolobotomy.

The result: Patient had complete flat effect
Gains: Ceasure of negative actions, physicality, and abbrasive tendencies
Cons: Patient looses ability to communicate, effectively becomes a vegetable

Thank God for Pharmacology and Psychopharmacology.

Lorenzo, murag ikaw man jud dako2 ug knowledge in the medical field. Mano mang mamatay man ang mga mananap kung rape-pon ?

Labihay napud tong tawhana, gabaan pa unta !

There are people with different kinds of pathologies regarding the nervous system, and within the nervous system, the subset of the neurocognitive system. It is the cognitive system, that is linked to the limbic system, and linked to the hypothalamus that allows one to differentiate right and wrong and sexuality ergo, hypersexuality and preferencing.

Individuals who commit crimes related to sex have some kind of abnormal sexual disorder that is borderline. This is what we call specific sexual paraphelias, in the field of Medical Psychiatry.

The reason for murdering their victims after the act of before the act can be addressed in forensic pyschiatry, but in my basic knowledge of the matter, i would say that there is some kind of abrasive history that the individual has experienced to perpetuate this crime; obervational behavior. That or this individual has some kind of hormonal imbalance that has led his limbic system in over drive--which leads to excessive hypersexuality, with a deviation in concept of right and wrong.

There are individuals with these kinds of psychiatric pathologies that remain untreated, or keep this silent througout their life. In actuality, the only cases we see are those that actually commit the act.

Treating these individuals is rather interesting. Corrective behavioral measures are implemented, some fail, some work. But individuals like these do not belong outside in society, but in correctional facilities. For the best interest of society.

Cheers.

But we can always choose our friends. :-)

Seleccion para todos, por favor: It is essential that each of us have friends, but to each person--we must be wise in who we select as true friends, worthy of our secrets and lifelong friendships. For there are people who might appear friends, but will spurn one on the dime for their own personal entertainment, and to the reversal of your own.

I agree with this synergistic addition, Alc.

~~

In regards to the past equipping the future, we only take the lessons of the past as strength; charge to experience, so to say. The strong man can differentiate experience and utilize it as strength for motivational purposes; the weak individual is hounded and haunted by the past continuously...and becomes a slave to the past.

Again, the present dictates the future. And the subconscious mind of the individual. It is his mental prowess that guides the physical and allows the acquisition of the goal.

Which, of course, is in the best interest of attaining the prize in that certain decision-making process.

Forward!

Absolutely! It is so pathetic though, that some people blamed others for their misfortunes, forgetting the fact that, they, first and foremost decided the kind of life they are going to lead.

What we are today are results of our decisions in the past, what we were in the past were results of decisions the time before then, so on and so forth. It is an unending cycle.

In my personal view, it is useless and a waste of energy to wonder and ponder about the 'what ifs' in life. Because those what ifs will always remain just that--what ifs. Hypothetical situations that could have been, but never/ failed to manifest. It is torture for oneself to spend excess time on those, and can only be to detrimental effect for the individual.

We live on the present, which dictates the course of the future.

What we decide on now will determine the future; the past's decisions have affected the present, but that does not mean that the future is dependent on the past. One's destiny lies on the action of the individual. I have always been a keen believer on an aggressive stance on life. If you want something, go get it. Because you know what...no one will give you anything in life; except free criticism. :)

If you want it, get it. Words into Action.

Cheers.

Quite true. There are very few absolute truths in life. Some of these are:

1. Our thoughts are ours, unless shared
2. Life is given, however, anyone has the ability to terminate his or her own life
3. Decisions are your own.
4. Death is guaranteed; the only difference is the manner and the time.

I miss you Uncle Roy. I am crying with tears when i write this. You will always be loved and remembered by your brothers, sisters, your uncles, nieces. I can still remember being carried by you when i was but a young child. I can remember it so clearly because your voice sounded very similar to my beloved father. And your laughter....filled the whole room!

You were a good man. And are a good man.

The LORD was kind to me and all of us to sending us a good, kind hearted UNCLE.

I love you.

I miss you.

Sometimes, our deciions are painful, sometimes they were wrong at the start and turn out right in the end, sometimes we thought they were right and were yielding negative results in the end, sometimes in the process it will hurt or make people happy. The only thing that really matters is to stand brave in facing the consequences of our decisions and the willingness to repair the damages if there are any.

Indeed. That is what makes our decisions uniquely personal. In that aspect, we are the lords and directors of our decisions, whether we take that step or deign to withdraw for fear of doubt or for precautionary measures. Decisions are entirely left to the individual, if we are strong enough to make it for our own or if we be wise/pleaded to take an action by the intercession of a few or a many. In the end, the essence of a decision, the action of a decision, the finality of a decision leads us to the idea that we are the directors of our own lives. It is the unique epitome of the notion of 'Free Will'.

To some it seems simple; but in reality, it is quite existentialist.

The fact that you made a decision, made an act, followed through with a decision is eternal. It is proof that you existed in this universe, in this vast emptiness. You were, you are, you did, you had, you were...

John is the kind of guy you love to hate.  He is always in a good mood and always has something positive to say.  When someone would ask him how he was doing, he would reply, 'If I were any better, I would be twins!'

He was a natural motivator..

If an employee was having a bad day, John was there telling the employee how to look on the positive side of the situation.

Seeing this style really made me curious, so one day I went up and asked him, 'I don't get it!'

'You can't be a positive person all of the time.  How do you do it?'

He replied, 'Each morning I wake up and say to myself, you have two choices today.  You can choose to be in a good mood or...you can choose to be in a bad mood

I choose to be in a good mood.'

Each time something bad happens, I can choose to be a victim or...I can choose to learn from it.  I choose to learn from it.

Every time someone comes to me complaining, I can choose to accept their complaining or...I can point out the positive side of life.  I choose the positive side of life.

'Yeah, right, it's not that easy,' I protested.

'Yes, it is,' he said.  'Life is all about choices.  When you cut away all the junk, every situation is a choice.  You choose how you react to situations.  You choose how people affect your mood.

You choose to be in a good mood or bad mood.  The bottom line:  It's your choice how you live your life.'

I reflected on what he said.  Soon hereafter, I left the Tower Industry to start my own business..  We lost touch, but I often thought about him when I made a choice about life instead of reacting to it.

Several years later, I heard that he was involved in a serious accident, falling some 60 feet from a communications tower.

After 18 hours of surgery and weeks of intensive care, he was released from the hospital with rods placed in his back.

I saw him about six months after the accident.

When I asked him how he was, he replied, 'If I were any better, I'd be twins...Wanna see my scars?'

I declined to see his wounds, but I did ask him what had gone through his mind as the accident took place.

'The first thing that went through my mind was the well-being of my soon-to-be born daughter,' he replied.  'Then, as I lay on the ground, I remembered that I had two choices:  I could choose to live or...I could choose to die.  I chose to live.'

'Weren't you scared?  Did you lose consciousness?'  I asked.

He continued, '...the paramedics were great.

They kept telling me I was going to be fine.  But when they wheeled me into the ER and I saw the expressions on the faces of the doctors and nurses, I got really scared.  In their eyes, I read 'he's a dead man'.  I knew I needed to take action.'

'What did you do?' I asked..

'Well, there was a big burly nurse shouting questions at me,' said John.  'She asked if I was allergic to anything 'Yes, I replied.'  The doctors and nurses stopped working as they waited for my reply.  I took a deep breath and yelled, 'Gravity''

Over their laughter, I told them, 'I am choosing to live.  Operate on me as if I am alive, not dead.'

He lived, thanks to the skill of his doctors, but also because of his amazing attitude...I learned from him that every day we have the choice to live fully...

Attitude, after all, is everything.

Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself.  Each day has enough trouble of its own.'  Matthew 6:34.

After all today is the tomorrow you worried about yesterday. - forwarded email...

Life, is always about choice. The good and the bad.

There on opposite table
writes a writer with purple cup on hand
face on book
with sniffling nose
with eyes shielded by glasses black as chairs on floor

With silent obseration
with typing sound
with ears that listen
do i reiterate symptoms
into this pen

Alas
does a medical student
write in tones
list in moans
and dots down things
that observe not only rings

Today is good

Quotable Quotes / Succeed, Anyway
May 05, 2010, 01:01:18 PM
"People are often unreasonable, illogical, and self-centered; forgive them anyway. If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives; be kind anyway. If you are successful, you will win some false friends and some true enemies, succeed anyway. If you are honest and frank, people may cheat you, be honest anyway. What you spend years building, someone could destroy overnight; build anyway. If you find serenity and happiness, they may be jealous, be happy anyway. The good you do today, people will often forget tomorrow, do good anyway. Give the world the best you have, and it may never be enough, give the world the best you've got anyway. You see, in the final analysis, it is between you and God; it was never between you and them anyway."

"To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others; to leave the world a little better; whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is the meaning of success."

yep. Additionally, the plants that are making japanese cars are no longer in japan anymore. Most of these plants are in china, or in the united states.

My dad still drives his 1998 Toyota 4Runner, when it was still made in JAPAN.

It runs well, body is perfect condition. Engine is strong. V6. No problem.

The new models have poor quality of production because most of the parts are no longer made in JAPAN.....

Reasoning: He defeated Tigrus (gladiatorial champion), rallied the gladiators, and ultimately defeated and killed Commodus (emperor of Rome), and was liberated and set 'free' in death.

Great acting.
