When I think of you, i cannot help but remember that one time when we reviewed for PDI, who knew medical lingo would sound so...attractive. Only because your voice was the attention of my ears, baby cakes!

Hahaha, sweet it is to find love, bro! Sweet kaayo!

I am so happy for you both!

When I was in college, i had a lab TA who was always, always trying to correct me and my lab partner and trying to undermine us in lab projects. (perhaps he held a grudge on us, who knows). One time tho, this lab TA suffered an epileptic attack, and my lab partner and I were the one to help him and call for medical help. He never did thank us. O well.

I was in the medical library studying for our Pharmacology Midterm Exam in July at midnight, then out of no where, my friends and colleagues (Shalabh, Sidrah, Job, Thiru, Chris, Jeff and Jyothi) came in with a cake that they bought with Job with his guitar singing 'Happy Birthday'. I was surprised. They took time from their studies to do that for me...i was so happy.

Cheers to good friends and colleagues!

May 2006,

I went on a tour with my friend Yaroslav, a law student from Ukraine to Lvov in Western Ukraine.
We rented a cabin there for a week, and to my surprise..it was rather cold at night. There was no electricity in that cabin, so we had to use gas and lamps and regular sheets for warmth. My first experience living in the village life in Ukraine. A cultural experience, i was forced survive considering the villagers that we stayed with did not speak English.

Amazing time.

How is the cost of food like in Western Europe diay? Is there really that much of a discrepancy in terms of cost of living and salary rates?

I have been to the former Soviet Union Republics: The Ukraine and Belarus during college for an exchange program, and the cost of living there was quite affordable. 1 US dollar was equivalent to 5 Hrivinia and was enough. The average Ukrainian was making about 65 dollars a month, and so cost of living there was rather affordable. The people were very hospitable and accepting despite my poor proficiency in Russian/Ukrainian and Cyrillic.

Verdades

Te amo mujer,
amo tu historia,
amo tu vida,
y amo tu paz,
inclusive me gusta verte estornudar,

One of the most spectacular, if fearsome looking, Roman medical instruments is the vaginal dilator or speculum (dioptra). It comprises a priapiscus with 2 (or sometimes 3 or 4) dovetailing valves which are opened and closed by a handle with a screw mechanism, an arrangement that was still to be found in the specula of 18th-century Europe. Soranus is the first author who makes mention of the speculum specially made for the vagina. Graeco-Roman writers on gynecology and obstetrics frequently recommend its use in the diagnosis and treatment of vaginal and uterine disorders, yet it is one of the rarest surviving medical instruments. Specula are large and readily recognizable and should not have suffered the same degree of destruction as thin instruments, such as probes, scalpels and needles. As a source of bronze, however, they may have been more subject to recycling than the smaller instruments.

The earliest mention of the rectal speculum is to be found in the treatise on fistula by Hippocrates (iii.331): "…laying the patient on his back and examining the ulcerated part of the bowel by means of the rectal speculum…"

The body's innate reaction, in regards to Tetralogy of Fallot:

Patients learn to squat to improve symptoms: compression of femoral arteries increases pressure, thereby decreaes the right to left shunt and directing more blood from the right ventricle to the lungs.

This is innate.

I woke up early this morning to the sound of shower storms, i could not go back to sleep and instead sat up and got ready to cycle. I cycled for an hour at the wooded bike trail, with my black attire and my gloves and helmet. Twas exhilarating. There is nothing like the cold morning air brushing upon my face as I cycle at 20 mph, the sound of twigs and leaves crushed underneath my mountain bike. The steep ravine that I rode was a bit slippery and had to maneuver my cycle had I not, i would have plummeted a good 30 feet down, thanks to the extra amount I paid for the thick cycling tires. Exhilarating. It was a muddy adventure, but the feeling of testosterone rush through my body is paramount, then to be heralded by other cyclists who made it down the ravine before me.

The bike back was refreshing as it started to shower, but it was great, nonetheless.

How To Wash and What To Use?

I used to ask myself this until i asked my barber a couple of months ago this exact question in regards to my beard. The trick to growing a beard and keeping it clean is to wash it frequently and diligently, more so like head hair, but the beard is a bit more difficult in that it may grow in different angles. This makes it essential to comb it ad apply conditioner frequently to prevent frizzing etc.

I highly recommend using Garnier Shampoo or Head and Shoulder Brands and apply conditioner generously. Comb and shape it to your liking afterwards.

#31838
Keeping a beard clean

Just like your hair, wash and shampoo your beard regularly. A mild shampoo is easier on your skin.
After shampooing, you may use a conditioner. Be sure to rinse thoroughly. Failure to rinse sufficiently may result in flaking. Because beard hairs are so coarse, conditioners will have less effect on the beard than on the hair on your head. But a conditioner will still help make your beard feel softer.
Gently pat and wipe your beard dry with a towel. Blow drying is not really necessary and can be harsh on your skin.
Comb your beard and mustache with a wide-toothed comb to remove tangles. Optionally, you can finish up by using a brush.

Trimming a beard

Some recommend only having this done professionally. Others won't let anyone else get near their beards with scissors or trimmers.
If you're going to trim your beard yourself, you'll need the right tools. You will have to decide whether to trim using scissors or a beard trimmer.
If you decide to trim primarily with scissors, consider purchasing a pair of professional barber's scissors.
When considering beard trimmers, a rechargeable cordless model might be a good choice.
You should also have a good wide-toothed comb. Optionally, for the mustache, you might want to have a fine-toothed comb. Some specialty stores sell small mustache combs.
A good-sized wall mirror is usually indispensible. You might also benefit from a magnifying mirror and possibly a three-way mirror.
Do not trim a wet beard or mustache. Wet hair is longer. When it dries you may find you've trimmed too much.
If you use a comb and scissors: Comb through the beard and cut the hair on the outside of the comb. It will take some practice to perfect this technique. It is better to err on the side of not cutting enough rather than cutting too much.
To help maintain a balance between the two sides of your face, you may find it useful to start near the ear on one side and trim down to the chin. Then repeat on the other side.
Beard trimmers almost always come with an adjustable and removable trimming guide. By adjusting the position of the trimming guide, you control how closely it will trim your beard. Refer to the instructions supplied with your trimmer for details. Until you've mastered the use of your trimmer, it is best to adjust the guide for a longer beard length setting at first.
To trim your mustache, first comb it straight down. Then use either the beard trimmer or scissors. Start in the middle and trim first towards one side of the mouth, then towards the other. Normally, you should not shave or trim the top of the mustache. It usually looks best if you let it grow all the way up to your nose.
After you've trimmed your beard and mustache, then you should maintain the shape of your beard. Use the beard trimmer with the adjustable trimming guide removed (be careful) to keep the neck line of your beard well-defined. Alternatively, you could carefully shave the lower portion of your neck to maintain the neck line of your beard.
Miscellaneous stray hairs can be removed with a trim razor. Plucking them is not recommended.

How to Choose the Right Beard Shape for Your Face

by: Dave Alexander
http://menshair.about.com/od/facialhair/a/beardshapes.htm

Properly trimmed and shaped facial hair can go a long way to enhance desirable facial features or take emphasis off weaknesses. While each face will have its own special considerations such as size of mouth, nose, and jawline, there are some general rules for choosing the right facial hair for your face type. Let's look at each.

The Round Face
When shaping the beard for a round face, go a bit longer at the chin to add length and make the face appear less round. Avoid bushy sideburns and keep the sides of the beard short. In lieu of a full beard, a goatee is often a good option for a round face.

The Long Face
Exactly opposite of the round face, the long face requires a beard which is fuller at the sides and shorter at the chin. The goal here is to add width to the sides and make the face appear less long. Make sure to avoid abrupt changes in length so the shaping is not obvious.

The Square Face
Similar to shaping a beard for a round face, the beard for a square face should be shorter at the sides and longer at the chin to add length to the face. Once again, a goatee is also a good option for men with square faces.

The Large Face
Since the face is large, any small facial hair or beard will appear out of proportion and make the face appear bigger. Keep the beard fuller and the mustache larger. Also follow the rules above for the appropriate face shape.

The Small Face
Small faces require small facial hair. Larger, fuller styles will make the face get lost and appear out of proportion. Also follow the rules above for the appropriate face shape.

The Oval Face
You lucky man! The oval face shape is considered the ideal shape and requires no special shaping to balance facial features. Do whatever you like and you'll look great.

Wow, so many styles. ;)

Back to the subject matter.

I do notice that the beard look is coming back into the fold. Perhaps not so much in the Philippines or Asia as it is not popular there, the clean cut look is preferred in Asia-Pacific, i notice.

Seeing my my mother and father smile, seeing my little brothers run to me when I come home to visit, "Kuya! Kuya!" they say. My heart is extolled and whatever stresses I had that day (mostly work-related) dissipates.

And lastly, whenever I visit the Blessed Eucharist during Eucharistic Adoration....i am inspired totally. Ma remind ko of Christ's parable of the Mustard Seed. And how it was able to move mountains.

Tip on proper way to trim/cut the side burn aspect.

Don't shave the side burns too thin, guys, as it ruins the look. I would suggest also that when you shave it, make sure to have an angled cut as it adds depth. Don't be afraid to let it grow thick (as you can always clean the sides and lower aspect anytime). At first, i was quite hesitant in growing it thick, but it is spectacular to know that women do like it. Again, it depends on the wearer, and on the preference of the grower.

Important Tip:
-When you are cleaning the back part, make sure to do so with a sharp blade and to make sure it is clean.

Important Tip:
-Always, always put on aftershave to bring a soft feeling on the areas that were trimmed. I highly recommend Gucci's Aftershave or Polo Ralph Lauren's Aftershave. Gucci is nice because it has a baby soft effect afterwards. Def. worth it.

Sige, good luck folks!
#31854
Alternative Beard Growing Tip:

1. If you find yourself growing  your beard and trim the edges, and trimming the mustache part, and accidentally cut too much, its okay.
(it can be salvaged!)
-I did this one time, and the tip is just to shave off the entire mustache; let it grow again, and at the same time, just keep the rest of your beard trimmed and allow the mustache to catch up. Usually it takes 1-2 weeks for the mustache to grow back, so not too long. :)

2. Be creative! If you want to shave off your mustache and just keep the beard, okay too! Again, don't be afraid of your facial hair.

This is ideal style, actually.
(again, notice how he trims the mustache part, this is a daily regimen, as those who actually grow a beard and maintain it, know how time consuming the mustache aspect is)

This is also something to consider
(the only lower-beard)

#31855
Beard Growing Tip For Men (who can grow one, that is):

1. It is good to allow the core beard grow fully, however, let the edges be trimmed and cut. It adds a clean look to the beard.

2. When growing the mustache, make sure to daily trim the edges. Don't let it grow too long. Okay if it's thick, but don't let it outgrow the lips.

3. Rinse, Lather, and then comb daily (if possible 3+ times daily). Keep it clean.

~~

For those who are growing a beard, don't be startled to notice that your beard hair comes in different colors. When my beard was fully grown, i noticed that i did have large pockets of red, brown and auburn hair. It is common, especially for those who have some kind of Spanish Blood or European Blood. (my great lolo in my maternal side was from Spain--so explains things). I was tempted to actually dye my beard black to keep a solid color scheme, however, grew accustomed to the red, and brown pockets. It is normal.

I have a friend who is Italian and has naturally dark brown hair, he also is growing a beard and has red pockets on his lower chin beard as well. So natural ra man ni.

That said, Grow On!

It is nice to see that you also believe in halves. I am a firm believer in the 'half'. For me, i do believe that we all have our other halves in the world. Some are very fortunate to find them and be with them, some, marry and live their lives without ever meeting their other half.

Amazing. Lagi.

Inspiration & Hope / The Touch Of A Master's Hand
May 23, 2010, 10:47:35 AM
'Twas battered and scarred, and the old auctioneer
Thought it scarcely worth his while
to waste much time on the old violin,
But he still held it up with a smile:
"What am I bidden, good folks," he cried,
"Who'll start the bidding for me?"
"A dollar, a dollar"; then, "Two!" "Only two?
Two dollars, and who'll make it three?
Three dollars, once; three dollars, twice;
going for three ..." but no.
From the room far back, a gray-haired man
Came forward and picked up the bow;
Then, wiping the dust from the old violin,
And tightening the loose strings,
He played a melody pure and sweet
As a caroling angel sings.

The music ceased, and the auctioneer,
With a voice that was quiet and low,
Said; "What am I bidden for the old violin?"
And he held it up with the bow.
"A thousand! And who'll make it two?
Two thousand! And who'll make it three?
Three thousand, once, three thousand, twice,
And going, and gone," said he.
The people cheered, but some of them cried,
"We do not quite understand
What changed it's worth." Swift came the reply:
"The touch of the master's hand."

And many a man with life out of tune,
And battered and scarred with sun,
Is auctioned cheep to the thoughtless crowd,
Much like this old violin.
A "mess of pottage," a glass of wine;
A game; and he travels on.
He is "going" once, "going" twice,
He's "going" and almost "gone."
But the Master comes, and the foolish crowd
Never can quite understand
The worth of a soul and the change that's wrought
By the touch of the Master's hand.

When i think of you, i start to cry, because you make me so happy, babe.

You are, my light in the dark.
You are the beating in my heart.

When i think of you, i can only think of spending more time with you, holding you in my strong arms, with my hand softly embracing your face. Because, baby cakes, I miss you so much. There is not a day that i don't think of you. Every night, before i sleep, i pray for you..always.

You are, my light in the dark.
You are the beating in my heart.

Yes. When I think of you....

Love You So Much Baby Cakes...,

The Bolanon is equivalent to the Jew, in my opinion. We are very little, and humble people, but whatever we do, by God's Grace, through hard work and sacrifice, are successful in.

I have to share you the story of Dr. Ting Tiongco, a General Surgeon from Davao and a graduate of University of the Philippines Medical School. This man wrote the awe-inspiring book titled, "Surgeons Don't Cry" and reminds us in his life experiences of the nature of change and the importance of standing up to principle and ideals that you so vehemently believe in. He hounds us, and reminds us to never forget of our 'Roots'. Dr. Ting Tiongco, tho lives in Davao is actually originally from Bohol Province.

His parents left Bohol because of World War II, and settled in what is now Davao. Despite living in Davao for many years, established a practice there and has contributed to the education of hundreds, if not thousands of Filipino Physician-Surgeons, he still, to this day, remembers his Bol-anon roots. He is a Bol-anon poet, as well, and retains his Bol-anon tonation in wording, as he mentions in his book.

Boholanos, tho we may come from very humble beginnings, are in love and love our precious gem...our beautiful Bohol Island. The land of Chocolate Hills and the Home of the Tarsiers... :)

Dream...and never fear to dream of better days...~

And thank you for your concern, as it benefits all of us, I am sure. :)

Thank You, my dear.

For me, in college, i loved dating red heads. Only because they looked so foreign.

One girl that i used to date had really bright red hair, and had the greenest eyes.

It was such a contrast to my jet black hair and my dark brown eyes.

Doy Bran, I want to hear your opinion on this, I got it from my mailbox;

Subject: mixing medicines

This was sent to us from a nurse in a school district.....
thought I'd better pass it along just as an FYI.
"Motrin and Robitussin don't mix"!!!!!
Madison , age 8, passed away just a few days ago.
Please pass this on.
Doctors told her family that there have been quite a few children
Madison 's age that have died recently the same way that she did.
The only common link between them was that they were given Motrin
(ibuprofen) and Robitussin together, this caused a heart attack.
They believe this is what happened to them.
They told her to alert everyone to this.
"Do not give children both of these medicines together."
You can give them one or the other but not both.
When Madison collapsed she suffered a heart attack and they were able to
revive her but the loss of oxygen damaged her brain and she was put on
the respirator.
After this she had four strokes before she died after being taken off
the respirator. Please pass this on!!!!!!!!!

Manay, this email is nothing but a hoax. This has been circulating since 2007 and each year the names have changed. Motrin is nothing but ibuprofin and Robitussin is a cough suppressant. These two are OTC Drugs (over the counter) and do not require prescription, however, it is always advised to talk to your family practioner about mixing OTCs in case an individual is allergic or sensitive to any of these.

Motrin is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug whose main indicative use is to relieve pain and relieve inflammation. Tussin (Robitussin) is nothing but dextromethorphan ingredient whose therapeutic goal is to relieve coughing. Both drugs have undergone extensive testing under the FDA and there have been no negative effects relating to myocardial infarct due to intake of such OTC drugs.

The email does not indicate any underlying cardiac abnormality of the child that he or she might have had, which could have predisposed the child to a myocardial infarct (as there are many rare congenital cardiac defects that can lead to pediatric MI cases, albeit the fact that it is very rare) and it is too vague in its story line.

Let me tell you all what a heart attack is: A Myocardial Infarct (Heart Attack) is a necrotic development of the myocardium (the heart) due to hypoxia of the different parts of the heart due to atherosclerotic plaque developepment, which leads to the development of thrombi and cloggage of arterial vessels that supplies blood to the heart muscle. If the particular vessel is clogged enough, and supply of oxygenated blood is hampered to the heart, the heart muscles will die, and develop necrotic lesions and fibrotic bands. This is called an Infarct. A severe MI due to the coagulation of the coronary artery and the intervertebral arteries will lead to pan-necrotic damage to a large part of the heart, and thereby significantly affecting the heart's ability to perform its ability to pump blood to the systemic circulation. As a result of this complication, the heart will give in, and the patient will expire.

The development of a thrombi and the process of atherosclerosis is chronic in duration. This means that it takes a long time to develop and the heart attack is due to a long-term abuse of the particular vessel and occlusion of said vessel.

This thereby destroys the notion that the mixture of Robitussin and Motrin is the cause since these drugs have an effective dose for only 4-6 hours, meaning that it was given for an acute condition, and was give that day. The supposed child suffered a heart attack that day, and there is no physiologic-anatomic way that a thrombi and atherosclerotic plaque would develop within hours and completely cause a massive MI. It is an anti-inflammatory agent meaning that it would mitigate any migration of mast cells or basophils from releasing histamine (because an agent of motrin is histaminase--meaning it breaks down motrin from forming a complex and initiating its MOA (mechanism of action). On the contrary, this supposed child suffered from a long-time congenital cardiac defect, probably due to mitral valve stenosis , aortic stenosis, some kind of mitral valve insufficiency due to a congenital birth defect. The regurgitation of blood back to the atrium from the valves due to the stenosis could have affected the arteries and damaged the endothelial lining, causing thrombi to develop via chronic duration. Which could have caused the infarct. There are so many possible and plausible causes that could have predisposed the said child to such infarct that lead to death. Again, emphasis in pediatric congenital cardiac abnormality as the COD (cause of death) and not the OTC.

~

But to everyone who is a mother, father, or caring for a child, always ask your physician for advice before buying an OTC for use for yourself or for your child before actually using it. Take a conservative stance in regards to this.

Best,
Bran Lorenzo

Bible Study / Re: What Is the Recession For
May 21, 2010, 12:02:18 AM
This recession teaches us all to humble ourselves. For it is when we humble ourselves, that the LORD raises us in Glory.

The LORD raises those whom are humble to Glory.

He sent his only begotten Son and our Savior to be born as a commoner, and died for our sins. But the sacrifice of the Heavenly Lamb was the epitome of Perfection. For you see, brothers and sisters, that Christ was raised in Glory and Transfigured !

The LORD is teaching us to humble ourselves, and reminds us that it is HE who is the provider of our bodies. Not ourselves. The LORD giveth and the LORD taketh.

GLORY TO HIM ALONE!

Rejoice! For The Lord Your God is the Father of All Fathers.

His Love is akin to the Father of the Prodigal Son.

Honor Your Mother and Father, whom are gifts of the Eternal Father Who Is In Heaven.

Honor also your Heavenly Father.....who watches over you from the moment you lay your head to sleep, to your waking in the morning. Since your birth in this world, till the very last breath you make, until you return to Him....

For HIS is the Glory, Honor, And Endless Majesty.
Amen.

I have a friend who is 4 years my senior, he is about 28 now (turning 29) and recently graduated medical school and in his 2nd year of Orthopaedic Surgery Residency (its a 5 year program). Since his 2nd year of medical school, he was dating another medical student, and have been with her since then. What a beautiful couple, in my opinion. They studied together, championed each other and cheered each other on while they were but students in medicine proper. They waited, which was a choice that they made, to finish their respective programs, and also stay true to each other.  Now, that they are married (recently). He is finishing his Orthopaedic Surgery Residency, and should finish within 3 years, while his wife (also a good friend of mine) is currently in her 2nd year of Pediatrics Residency. They are very good people, i admire their principles, they both, no doubt, are a great couple. Two Physicians...and there is nothing that they want that they will never be able to have. But knowing John, and his humble nature, he will teach his children the right way. He is very active in Church Life...

It shows you, it never is wrong to wait, and that....Trusting in the Lord always pays off.

Both of them are very active in the Church Life, and are very good decent people.

Tinuud jud ang saying,...GOD blesses a happy soul...always....

~

They both inspire me.
