Carmina Villaroel almost asked a commercial shoot with Claudine Barretto to “pack up” after getting irked by the latter’s endless demands.

First, Claudine requested that she be given the bigger dressing room, which Carmina readily agreed to. Then Claud asked if, instead of Mina, she could be the one to wear the white long-sleeved shirt. Again, Mina did not object. Later, Claud said she needed a nap.

That was fine with Mina, too.
The clincher was when Claud asked to deliver the longer line in the commercial. That was the last straw; Mina walked out.

Good thing cooler heads prevailedâ€"the shoot eventually went on as scheduled. If there’s truth in advertising, there’s also real drama in the making of an ad. Stars sell even when they don’t always gel.

This can never be accidental. This is insinuation, testing the waters how the world would react.

by Associated Press

An anchor on China’s state-run television network has accidentally declared the Philippines a part of China (it's not accidental, it's intentional and a prelude to invasion), in an embarrassing gaffe as tensions between the two nations run high.

He Jia, anchor for China Central Television’s (CCTV) nationally televised news broadcast, made the claim during a late Monday broadcast that has been repeatedly replayed on the Internet.

The presenter apparently meant to say that the Huangyan islands â€" known in the Philippines as the Scarborough Shoal (Panatag Shoal), and claimed by both nations â€" is China’s territory.

“We all know that the Philippines is China’s inherent territory and the Philippines belongs to Chinese sovereignty, this is an indisputable fact,” He said in the broadcast, which has since disappeared from the CCTV website but is available elsewhere on the web.

World Daily News / A Bad Advertisement About NATO
May 09, 2012, 09:02:16 PM
By Robert D. Kaplan

Whatever one thought of the Libya intervention, the details make for a bad advertisement about NATO. As one U.S. Air Force planner told me, "It was like Snow White and the 27 dwarfs, all standing up to her knees" -- the United States being Snow White and the other NATO member states being the dwarfs. The statistics regarding just how much the United States had to go it alone in Libya -- pushed by the British and French -- despite the diplomatic fig leaf of "leading from behind," are devastating for the alliance.

More than 80 percent of the gasoline used in the intervention came from the U.S. military. Almost all the individual operation orders had an American address. Of dozens of countries taking part, only eight air forces were allowed by their defense ministries to drop any bombs. Many flew sorties apparently only for the symbolism of it. While most airstrikes were carried out by non-U.S. aircraft, the United States ran the logistical end of the war.

At least 12 persons were killed, six others were feared dead while another three others were seriously hurt in an early dawn fire that hit a commercial building located at the city commercial district here Wednesday.

All the fatalities were believed to have been trapped inside the third floor of Novo Department Store believed to have only one fire exit.

Butuan City Fire Marshall Aldrick Gomez confirmed that 12 persons were so far found dead inside Novo Department Store, that is renting the three-storey Tan Commercial Building located at commercial area in Montilla Boulevard this city.

Gomez said three sales ladies of Novo Store, who were able to escape from the third floor of Tan Building which served as their sleeping quarters, suffered burns. The three are now confined at Elisa R. Ochoa Memorial Maternity and General Hospital at San Jose Street this city.

The injured sales ladies were identified as Vicky Velez, 21, from Cagayan de Oro City; Grace Canoy, 22, resident of Pagadian City and Marilyn Tulo, 20, from Aurora, Zamboanga del Sur.

Novo has stores in cities of Cagayan de Oro, Pagadian, Surigao and other cities in Mindanao. It is owned by Chinese nationals, according to Amy Delegiro, one of the assistant store supervisors of Novo Department Store Butuan City.

Delegiro told the PNA in an interview at the fire scene here that there are 21 sales ladies who were staying and sleeping on the third floor of Novo Department Store. She said most of the stay-ins working for Novo were not residents of Butuan City.

Gomez said eight of the casualties were sales ladies of Novo Department store.

Gomez said at about 3:55 a.m. Wednesday the Butuan City Fire Department received emergency call for assistance from the area.

Gomez said fire trucks from nearby towns in Agusan del Norte arrived at the fire scene to help.

He said the fire was put out after more than two hours of fire fighting initiatives from 15 fire trucks from Butuan City, Cabadbaran City and other towns in Agusan provinces who have fire truck.

Two new entrants are joining the ranks of city mayoralty hopefuls after City Councilor John Geesnell “Baba” Yap and Dr. Abe Lim. Although Yap is yet to make up his mind, it was bruited around this early in the game that he is casting a moist eye to succeed his uncle City Mayor Dan Neri Lim. There’s no question that another uncle, Dr. Abe, has already manifested his desire to run for mayor after consultations with his US-based family. He also made consultations with barangay leaders allied with the camp of incumbent Mayor Lim and the reception was said to be encouraging. The two other wannabes are former vice mayor Jose Antonio Veloso and lawyer Augustinus “Dodong” Gonzaga. Both Gonzaga and Veloso were interviewed last week in the top-rated radio program “Cuentas Claras”.

In separate interviews, Gonzaga said he has decided to make a crack of the ciy mayoralty after being assured of the top guns of the Liberal Party. Gonzaga said he was banking on the support of Senator Franklin Drilon, a close associate. Gonzaga, a former city councilor in the 80’s, is the deputy secretary-general of the law department of the Commission on Appointments. With this impressive credential, Gonzaga believes that he can clinch the nomination of the Liberal Party in this city. Drilon is a stalwart of the LP. However, if he fails to wrest control of the LP nomination, Gonzaga said he’d rather choose not to run. The top city post is up for grabs for new pretenders after the incumbent is barred from seeking reelection for completing the three-term limit. As for Veloso, “ it is the die cast” according to a press release. Sure of his plan to run, the former vice mayor said “my leaders are kept posted making my decision definite to seek the city mayoralty seat in next year’s election.” In another media interview, Veloso said the incumbent last-termer mayor is out by 2013 and there’s no better time for a mayoralty run than new year’s elections to restore dignity and competence at city hall.

Tagbilaranons know fully well how the city has been mismanaged and the silent majority are just too eager for the ultimate right moment to come, his supporters said. Veloso expressed full trust in the political maturity and intelligence of the city constituents even if last-termer Mayor Dan Lim seems hell-bent to perpetuate in power thru a bloodline successor. Veloso topped the instant survey for city mayor conducted by DYRD’s top-rated Inyong Alagad program on Monday, eve of Tagbilaran fiesta. According to a press release presumably from Veloso’s camp, city hall can only be cleansed of grease if the next mayor rules not by Lim’s dictate, Veloso’s leaders and supporters asserted. Many leaders gathered at the Veloso residence during the city fiesta. His leaders and supporters are intact but Veloso is open to those who like to join his group for more strength and adhere to their core crusade for a city that is proud again of its storied history. Also a former two time councilor, Veloso leads the group that includes reelectionist Councilors Anne Mariquit Oppus, Bebiano Inting and Alberta Torralba, wife of ex-Mayor Jose Torralba.

While his group has the support of Gov. Edgar Chatto, Vice Gov. Concepcion Lim and First District Rep. Rene Relampagos, Veloso has kept himself visible in barangays. He has gone his way attending to vital community concerns like delivering road repair materials in response to people’s clamor, which otherwise has fallen to deaf city hall ears. With support clubs and organizations, he has spearheaded surgical-medical missions like free tuli. Consistently service-oriented, the former vice mayor has initiated mass feeding for children as in Cogon, for example, where his program has been carried out by the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) led by chairman Rodney Magallano. Veloso has kept strong link with the sector of the women so that they had him and Oppus as their invited guest speakers capping the city celebration of the Women’s Month in April. He has maintained his low profile even if he has also involved himself in sports development of the youth sector.

Veloso was in fact instrumental to the formation and participation of the delegation of Tagbilaran athletes to the first-ever Boholympics last month. He generated support to the delegation that ultimately grabbed the overall championship of the multi-event competition, which the province’s has designed to be Bohol’s foremost annual sports spectacle. Many are convinced, however, that effective governance is never all about sports especially in an LGU like Tagbilaran where many essential concerns and calls for transformation have been neglected. Many sectors share the idea that activities obviously for “pogi” points cannot qualify for the kind of leader who is equal to the big task, tall order of governance. Veloso said that above all, a city leadership that is credible, competent and has a high regard for values has long been the crying want of the Tagbilaranons. Veloso is running for mayor as he bleeds in merely pondering on the years wasted by an administration that champions both empty and double talks. He said city hall needs a leader who knows what to do, can focus on it and make it done to prove he is worth the mandate.

Bohol Latest News / Disaster Preparation in Bohol

The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC), has laid down plans in strengthening its disaster preparedness by clearly identifying each agency’s role, thereby strengthening their ranks in the process. PDRRMC chair Gov. Edgar M. Chatto, despite his heavy schedule, still found time to discuss with members possible scenarios that could happen while each agency laid on the table every mitigating factor they could contribute should any disaster or calamity occur. Provincial Administrator Alfonso Damalerio II, Action Officer for Peace and Security, and the most able hand behind TaRSIER 117, and Glenn Doloritos, carefully guided council members in identifying their respective roles in every possible situation during a two-day workshop.

“We’ve noticed that each agency would be more effective if they are given the choice to focus on their respective areas of expertise,” Doloritos informed the governor. Hence, the restructuring of each committee of the council with the specific aim of fitting each calamity or disaster to each agency’s specific field of expertise. Subsequently, discussion results which laid bare the council’s plans, which were mass seconded and approved by council members were then presented to Gov. Chatto. Chatto, who just came home from Manila from the 45 th Annual Conference of Governors of the Asian Development Bank as speaker for Tourism, informed the council that said meeting highlighted the need to really prepare for climate change and pushed for every nation to look at disaster mitigation programs and disaster preparedness strategies to combat the imminent ill effects of Mother Nature’s dilemma.

Worldwide disasters and calamities which continue to strike unexpectedly at random nations have put climate change awareness and adaptation at the top of the list as a global concern. “What is more challenging is how to put the plan on the ground,” Chatto challenged each member agency during the PDRRMC meeting. “Are we really prepared? Up to what extent is our preparedness?” Chatto further posed these questions which gave each council member more in-depth examination of their respective resources. The recent adoption of the Armed Forces of the Philippines’ (AFP) Reservist Group of the Provincial Government of Bohol’s (PGBh) TaRSIER 117, which stands for Telephone and Radio Systems Integrated Emergency Response, Bohol’s Quick Response Unit (QRU) designed to respond to emergencies and to mitigate the effects of calamities, a very important milestone in Bohol’s history, has added to the Province’s strength as an important aid in risk reduction. “This apparent expression of brotherhood between the Reservists and the TaRSIERs will not only serve as an example of cooperation among Boholanos but also as a wake-up call for everyone signifying mutual aid and teamwork among nations to protect Mother Earth from falling into the abyss of destruction and nothingness,” Chatto emotionally stated; a most meaningful statement collaborated by all present during the meeting. The wife of a labor leader who was killed allegedly due to labor matters is asking for justice for her fallen husband. Rosalito Nicanor Dumalag, 40, a resident of Pook Pantalan was gunned down at dawn last Tuesday while on his way home after calling it a day of his work as pier porter. Police investigators looking into Dumalag’s murder are zeroing in on his activities as head of the Tagbilaran City Multi-purpose Porters Cooperative. He has been chair of the coop for two years. In seeking the early solution to the crime , Marietta Dumalag said the perpetrator/s should be tracked down the earliest time possible to serve the ends of justice. The labor leader was killed near his makeshift house located at the foot of the city wharf.

Left with six children, with the youngest only two years old, the eldest 12 years old, the wife said she cannot recall that her husband has a known enemy although there were premonitions earlier to look after the welfare of their children. According to her narrative, at the time her husband was killed, she was awaken by bursts of gunfire for two consecutive times. At first, she ignored the sound of the first burst but when it was followed by another, she decided to come out only to find out her husband slumped to the ground lying in his own pool of blood. By instinct, she brought her husband to the nearby Ramiro Community Hospital. Hours later her husband was pronounced dead apparently due to a bullet one in the head. He was killed by a lone gunman who apparently waited for his target after disembarking from the victim’s motorcycle. Under cover of darkness, the suspect just walked casually in the direction of Everglory Hotel located at the corner of Gallares-Maria Clara Sts. The victim was employed as a city porter since 1997 until he became chair of the porters coop two years ago. The remains of the fallen labor leader will be interred today at the Dampas Catholic Cemetery.

Barely four days after the break-in of the house of Guindulman Mayor Fe Anaña Piezas, two of the three suspects were captured by pursuing policemen solving the five-day old robbery in record time. Carted away from the evening robbery was P600,000, a sizable amount among robbery cases pulled off in recent memory in the province of Bohol. The two suspects were nabbed the other day while a third suspect remains the object of a massive police manhunt. Guindulman police chief PInsp Romeo Jamero said they are now in custody Ralph Timbal and Dizon Timbal, all of legal age, from nearby barangay Bato, who were positively identified by a woman helper to be the robbers who entered the mayor’s residence in barangay Guinacot at about 7 Monday evening. Mayor Piezas and her husband, retired municipal health officer Ernesto Piezas were not in the house during the incident.

The arrest of the two suspects came after the Provincial Intelligence Branch (PIB), the Special Operations Group (SOG) and elements of the Guindulman Police Station jointly conducted the pursuit operation banking on information provided to them by house helper Cherry Mae Amora. The helper, during the initial investigation said she did not recognize the identities of the suspects since they wore bonnets. All witnesses in the house also said they could not look closely at the suspects out of fear since the robbers were armed. Upon further investigation, it was noted that Amora appear to know the suspects based on some alleged text messages on her cellphone. Scene of the crime operatives also noted that the robbers did not ransack the whole house but directly went into the masters’ bedroom and took the cash tucked underneath the bed mattress. Initial investigation findings led to the possibility that it was an inside job.

Taken were P600,000 cash and the heist was over in less than ten minutes. The helper, suspected as accessory to the crime, is now eyed as principal witness in the complaint readied for filing against the two arrested suspects and the still at large unidentified third companion. This was not the first time helpers of the mayor were tagged as suspects in alleged crimes involving money matters. Earlier, the mayor also filed a criminal complaint against another woman helper who allegedly defrauded her close to P2M money while designated as cashier of her piggery business. The case is still under litigation at the Regional Trial Court, Branch 50, in Loay.
