Sarangani representative and Filipino boxing champion Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao was barred from an interview with entertainment show “Extra” at the Grove in Los Angeles after making an anti-gay remark.

Speaking with the National Conservative Examiner, Pacquiao reportedly quoted Leviticus 20:13, which says, “If a man has sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable.”

“They are to be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.”

Pacquiao made the comment after disagreeing with United States President Barack Obama’s stance on same-sex marriage.

Last week, Obama announced his support for same-sex marriage, telling ABC News that “I think same-sex couples should be able to get married.”

Pacquiao told the Examiner: “God only expects man and woman to be together and to be legally married, only if they are in love with each other.”

“It should not be of the same sex so as to adulterate the altar of matrimony, like in the days of Sodom of Gomorrah of Old,” he added.

Militant group Bayan on Wednesday questioned the entry of a US nuclear-powered attack submarine in the former Subic Nava Base in Zambales, which is near the disputed Bajo de Masinloc or Panatag shoal.

"Virtual basing and hosting of US warships are being justified by the Visiting Forces Agreement and the Mutual Logistics Support Agreement. Philippine ports like Subic are again providing logistics support for US ships. We might see more of these port calls now that the US is rebalancing towards Asia,” said Renato Reyes Jr., Bayan secretary general.

The USS North Carolina (SSN 777), a Virginia class attack submarine, is presently docked at the former US bases in Subic, according to reports.

“The Philippines is de facto hosting US warships presumably armed with nuclear and other weapons of mass destruction. The entry of the nuclear submarine may be in contravention of the Philippine constitutional ban on nuclear weapons. The problem is that under the VFA, the US neither confirms nor denies that its ships carry nuclear weapons. However, the presumption is that they do, especially the more advanced ships,” Reyes said.

Reyes said Article II, Section 8 of the Philippine Constitution states that “the Philippines, consistent with the national interest, adopts and pursues a policy of freedom from nuclear weapons in its territory.”

Reyes added that the entry of the high-tech US submarine may have negative repercussions in the Philippines' dispute with China, saying perceived US involvement may further escalate tensions.

Two events shaped modern French strategy. The first, of course, was the defeat of Napoleon in 1815 and the emergence of Britain as the world's dominant naval power and Europe's leading imperial power. This did not eliminate French naval or imperial power, but it profoundly constrained it. France could not afford to challenge Britain any more and had to find a basis for accommodation, ending several centuries of hostility if not distrust.

“Nakaka-lula (mind-boggling)!”

That is how the House prosecution panel described the dollar accounts of Chief Justice Renato Corona as testified by Ombudsman Conchita Carpio-Morales Monday on Day 37 of the impeachment trial of the chief magistrate.

Morales had earlier testified to the Senate impeachment court that based on the report given to her by the government’s Anti-Money Laundering Council (AMLC), the Chief Justice has more than USD 10-million worth of deposits in 82 dollar accounts.

According to the AMLC report, Morales said Corona’s dollar accounts were spread in various banks in the country â€" eight accounts in the Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) in Acropolis, San Juan; 18 accounts in BP1-Tandang Sora; 34 in San Francisco del Monte; one in BPI Management Investment Corp.; eight in Philippine Savings Bank (PSBank) in Cainta; six in PSBank Katipunan; four in Allied Bank Corp.; one in Citibank; and two in Deutsche Bank.

Deputy Speaker Lorenzo “Erin” Tañada said that although they had known as early as January this year that Corona had several dollar accounts, it was not in this magnitude.

“The Ombudsman’s testimony just confirmed the fact that the Chief Justice has dollar accounts. What was surprising was the amount involved â€" USD 12 million, not including the peso deposits which we do not know how much really is involved,” he said while stressing the fact that all those amounts were not included in the statement of assets and liabilities and net worth (SALN) of Corona.

Meanwhile, Aurora Rep. Juan Edgardo “Sonny” Angara noted how Corona had only one dollar account in 2003 that ballooned to 82 dollar accounts by 2012 and again urged the Chief Justice to testify before the impeachment court.

“Corona has got a lot of explaining to do. Now is the right to come out and explain what needed to be explained to the people,” Angara said.

For his part, Marikina Rep. Romero “Miiro” Quimbo said that they could not really understand the defense camp’s move to bring in as hostile witness the very person who could unlock the things that have been locked for so long a time that the prosecution had a hard time unlocking.

“We were frankly surprised by their move to bring in as witness the one person who would do the most damage to their position. The Ombudsman had practically opened cans of worms that are worst than what we had previously expected,” he said.

”Her testimony was very damaging,” Quimbo added.

Meanwhile, Angara said that the Ombudsman’s testimony is a watershed in the fight against corruption in high places.

“In the recent past, the Office of the Ombudsman had been reluctant to use its powers against high officials of the land,” he said.

“For the first time, we now see the awesome powers of the Ombudsman being used as the main instrument against corruption. We must look at it in the context of a fledgling democracy that is in the process of developing our institutions. We could look at this development as the turning point in our history in the fight against corruption,” Angara said.
