The teeth of the black piranha (Serrasalmus rhombeus), one of the largest species

Uncovering the Myth of the Piranha - The river's devils seem to be rather fearful
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

There are much bigger fishes in the river than this rather small guy, that do not pass over 42 cm (1.2 ft) in length and 3.85 kg (9 pounds) in weight, that trigger the dread in any traveler through South America. Their image is horrific, with a mouth full of razor-sharp 4 mm long canine-like teeth, which are replaced constantly during their lifespan just as in the case of the sharks and crocodiles. The shoal attack can clean off meat from a smaller carcass in several minutes.

But a new research shows that their fearsome reputation precedes the reality. Piranhas seems to be rather fearful creatures, that gather in large shoals to protect themselves from predators. "Rather than aggressive killers, research shows piranhas are omnivorous scavengers, eating mainly fish, plants and insects," said Anne Magurran of Scotland’s University of St Andrews.

Piranhas do have a keen
sense of smell and hearing and can pick up a drop of blood in 200 liters of water, but have poor eyesight.

The piranhas of the genus Catoprion do not kill at all. They "graze" on their prey, usually just taking a bite out of another fish's fins or scales. The flesh grows back within weeks, giving them the chance to feast on the same victim again. The meat-eating killers belong to the genera Serrasalmus, Pygopristis and Pygocentrus.

"Previously it was thought piranhas shoaled as it enabled them to form a cooperative hunting group. However, we have found that it is primarily a defensive behavior. Their cautious behavior is crucial to avoid being eaten," she said.

In fact, many people ignore the fact that locals find piranha meat as one of the best amongst Amazon's fish. The same idea is shared on many predators, from boto (the Amazon river dolphin) to giant otters, caymans (a relative of the alligators), birds (like herons) to and bigger fish, like the giant pirarucu (Arapaima gigas), considered the largest freshwater fish in the world (over 3 m (10 ft) long and 200 kg (440 pounds) heavy).

Working at the Mamiraua Institute in Brazil, Magurran revealed how shoal sizes increase in connection to predation risk, especially when water levels in the Amazon basin drop, leaving less room for piranhas to escape attack. The piranha shoals have a typical pattern, with the larger adult individuals in the middle, surrounded by smaller juveniles.

"Previously it was thought piranhas shoaled as it enabled them to form a co-operative hunting group. However we have found that it is primarily a defensive behavior, and quite a complex one. The bigger, older fish tend to swim in the middle as they are reproductively mature and need to keep safe, whereas the outer layer of the shoal is made up of smaller, younger piranhas. Being at the edge of the group means they can get access to food sooner - essential if they are to grow more quickly and mature." explained Magurran.

The myth of the aggressive piranha seems to have been brought into the western world, t least in part, by U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt, who in 1914 described witnessing a shoal stripping the flesh from a cow in minutes when he visited Brazil. But he was unaware that the show had been set up to entertain tourists and that the captive fish had been kept hungry for days so they would go into a feeding frenzy.

Vista Did Nothing to Save Gates â€" Hasta la Vista Bill...- Bill Gates is dethroned
By: Marius Oiaga, Technology News Editor - Softpedia

Microsoft's latest operating system Windows Vista did nothing to help keep Bill Gates on top of the world. Microsoft Co-Founder and Chairman Bill Gates is no longer the world's wealthiest man. Gates was dethroned by the Mexican
telecom titan Carlos Slim Helú, according to NZHerald. William Gates III ranked as the world's top billionaire for no less than 13 years in a row.

However, it seems that the same year that Microsoft launched a new version of its main cash cows Windows Vista and the Office 2007 System is a time of ill fortune for Bill Gates. Nothing stood in the way of the meteoric rise of Carlos Slim Helú. Not even Warren Buffett, and now not even Bill Gates.

In just the last 14 months, Helú's already massive fortune increased by a staggering $23 billion. The rise was sufficient to make Helú the world's richest man, and to dethrone Bill Gates from a position he occupied for over a decade. Microsoft's worldwide presence was simply insufficient to make up for the Mexican stock market jumping no less than 49%. At the Windows Hardware Engineering Conference (WinHEC) 2007 in Los Angeles in mid May, Bill Gates applauded approximately 40 million sold Windows Vista licenses.

But while Gates declared himself surprised with the success of the latest Windows platform, Vista is nothing compared to Helú's telecom business. In this context, the wealth of the world's top billionaire represents no less than 7% of the whole annual output of Mexico's economy. Helú's current wealth is estimated at in excess of $67.8 billion. The fortune increase for Helú was driven by a jump of over 27% in the shares of America Movil. This means that Bill gates is now over $8.5 billion poorer than Helú with a wealth estimated at just over $59 billion.

How to Find out if Your Woman Is Cheating on You and Where She Is at that Time - The spy panties
By: Lucian Dorneanu, Science Editor - Softpedia

The spy panties may sound like something out of a bad spy movie, but it's actually as real as they come. You can now track your girlfriend/wife wherever she goes and even know if she's cheating on you, without her knowing about it.

If you're the jealous type, or just paranoid, you can keep track of your woman using the spy panties, a thing â€" I don't know if I can call it a device, or a gadget â€" that lets you know where exactly is
your partner, all day, everyday.

Moreover, the spy panties can even send you accurate information about her temperature and heart rate, so that you know instantly if and when she's "hotter" than usual, or if the panties are not where they're supposed to be.

The best thing about it is the fact that your partner has no clue that you're on her tail, because the panties use a combination of GPS technology and sensors to transmit data back to a fixed location from most places in the world. This allows the jealous boyfriend/husband to find out where she is in a matter of seconds, using a computer, a cell phone or a PDA.

In case you're wondering why she doesn't realize she's being followed, I'll tell you that the device mounted on the panties is actually quite small and disguised as an innocent pattern on the material, something like a flower or a heart, and doesn't weigh very much.

Enlarges picture, probably telling you how they should look ON your girlfriend

[Again, if you're wondering who the sicko that invented this device is, I'll tell you: the US citizens. How so? Well, this a technology originally developed by the U.S. military through DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency), which, you have guessed it, is funded by the taxpayers' money.

Nice, isn't it? As you probably know, DARPA has almost unlimited funds and way too many crazy ideas to spend it on, but this is truly the wackiest so far, even better than the laughing bullets or the Terminator robot look-alike.

For all of you wanting to know more about these special panties, there's a site where they can be purchased, with prices ranging from $99 to $1190, but they don't say so you should convince the girl to actually wear them.

Any ideas?

Some technical specifications right here.

What does love mean?
Anonymous

When a group of professionals posed
the question, "What does love mean?"
to a group of children between the
ages of 4 and 8, they got answers that
were broader and deeper than anyone
could have imagined. See for yourself:

"Love is that first feeling you feel
before all the bad stuff gets in the
way."

"When my grandmother got arthritis,
she couldn't bend over and paint her
toenails anymore. So my grandfather
does it for her all the time, even
when his hands got arthritis too.
That's love."

"When someone loves you, the way they
say your name is different. You know
that your name is safe in their mouth."

"Love is when a girl puts on perfume
and a boy puts on shaving cologne and
they go out and smell each other."

"Love is when you go out to eat and
give somebody most of your French
fries without making them give you any
of theirs."

"Love is when someone hurts you. And
you get so mad but you don't yell at
them because you know it would hurt
their feelings."

"Love is what makes you smile when
you're tired."

"Love is when my mommy makes coffee
for my daddy and she takes a sip
before giving it to him to make sure
the taste is OK."

"Love is when you kiss all the time.
Then when you get tired of kissing,
you still want to be together and you
talk more. My Mommy and Daddy are like
that. They look gross when they kiss."

"Love is what's in the room with you
at Christmas if you stop opening
presents and listen."

"If you want to learn to love better,
you should start with a friend who you
hate."

"Love is hugging. Love is kissing.
Love is saying no."

"When you tell someone something bad
about yourself and you're scared they
won't love you anymore. But then you
get surprised because not only do they
still love you, they love you even
more."

"There are two kinds of love: Our love
and God's love. But God makes both
kinds of them."

"Love is when you tell a guy you like
his shirt, then he wears it everyday."

"Love is like a little old woman and a
little old man who are still friends
even after they know each other so
well."

"During my piano recital, I was on a
stage and scared. I looked at all the
people watching me and saw my daddy
waving and smiling. He was the only
one doing that. I wasn't scared
anymore."

"My mommy loves me more than anybody.
You don't see anyone else kissing me
to sleep at night."

"Love is when mommy gives daddy the
best piece of chicken."

"Love is when mommy sees daddy smelly
and sweaty and still says he is
handsomer than Robert Redford."

"Love is when your puppy licks your
face even after you left him alone all
day."

"I know my older sister loves me
because she gives me all her old
clothes and has to go out and buy new
ones."

"I let my big sister pick on me
because my Mom says she only picks on
me because she loves me. So I pick on
my baby sister because I love her."

"Love cards like Valentine's cards say
stuff on them that we'd like to say
ourselves, but we wouldn't be caught
dead saying."

"When you love somebody, your
eyelashes go up and down and little
stars come out of you."

"Love is when mommy sees daddy on the
toilet and she doesn't think it's
gross."

"You really shouldn't say 'I love you'
unless you mean it. But if you mean
it, you should say it a lot. People
forget."

What Dictates Male Fertility? - An immune factor
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

It is easy to blame it on the woman, but in 40 % of the couples, the man is the sterile part. Now, a team at the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research found an immune factor that regulates human semen, inducing fertility or sterility in a man.

The macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) appears to be crucial in maturing sperm, to make it ready for reproduction. This discovery could lead to a new test for male fertility. The team collected semen samples from men three to five days after a sexual abstinence period.

The research pool
was made of 68 men with reproductive issues and 27 healthy controls, and the analyses were made without the identity of the owner being known. The individuals with infertility issues presented too high or too low MIF levels, while the healthy subjects had average values.

When supplementary MIF was added into lab dishes with normal sperm, their count and mobility dropped. In this case, MIF could be employed as a method of male contraception. The team has also developed a patent that can be employed to analyze MIF levels in order to forecast a man's fertility.

MIF is a crucial immune molecule, detected 40 years ago, and only recently found to be a pro-inflammatory chemical. It has been connected to many autoimmune and inflammatory conditions, like diabetes and sepsis. The Feinstein team recently discovered a critical zone on the MIF protein surface that induces the main inflammatory response. A chemical attacking that area could be employed to treat many conditions, such as septic shock, sepsis, rheumatoid arthritis and diabetes.

They developed a specific inhibitor, ISO-1, to match the pro-inflammatory area. In animal tests with sepsis, ISO-1 kills MIF’s potent inflammatory capacities and the animals survived with a once-fatal sepsis. In case of sepsis (an over-reactive and usually deadly immune response to a bacterial attack) MIF levels are 10 to 20 times over the normal. If MIF decreases, the patients' survival chances increase dramatically.

215,000 Americans die annually of sepsis, while another 500,000 survive the infection, but often with severe cardiovascular problems. MIF was found crucial in heart damage. The anti-MIF antibodies significantly increased cardiac performance during septic shock. MIF levels are also two times higher in autoimmune conditions like rheumatoid arthritis and diabetes.

The research team discovered that having high levels of MIF makes lab animals prone to diabetes, weeks earlier than expected. But MIF does not work by itself: it uses a network of molecules to trigger its pro-inflammatory effects. The Feinstein team aims to detect those recruit chemicals.

A Chewing Gum That Increases The Breasts' Size
- The effect of Kwao Krua
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

Those naughty girls chewing gum are so sexy because, in fact, chewing makes them have appealing breasts! A chewing gum said to increase the size, shape and tone of the breasts proved itself a big success in Japan. The Bust-Up gum, when chewed at least three times daily, can also improve circulation, decrease stress and aging effects.

This gum slowly releases chemicals
from an extract of a tropical plant called Kwao Krua (Pueraria mirifica), native to Thailand and Myanmar. The plant has been employed for long by indigenous hill tribe people as a traditional medicine, and a muscle tissue fortifier.

The Pueraria tubers contain phytoestrogens, plant chemicals mimicking the female sex hormones called estrogens. Miroestrol and deoxymiroestrol, found only in Pueraria, are particularly strong, and resemble estradiol, the main human estrogen. These two chemicals combine with a third phytoestrogen, isoflavone, found in soy and red clover.

Experiments made at Thailand's Chulalongkorn University showed that Pueraria mirifica therapy could increase breast size by 80%. Tests carried by English researchers revealed that the plant induces a beneficial effect on the skin, and hair, besides the breasts. There are also various Pueraria products on the market, including pills, and tea.

"Research had suggested phytoestrogens may be beneficial in post-menopausal women in terms of reducing menopausal symptoms, and may also have beneficial effects on risk factors for heart disease and osteoporosis." said Claire Williamson, of the British Nutrition Foundation.

Pueraria could also fight breast cancer, but this remains to be investigated. But "Research had suggested that isoflavone supplements are not as effective in managing menopausal symptoms as isoflavone rich foods such as soy." she said.

And isoflavones consume seems to require a life-long intake to trigger beneficial effects on postmenopausal symptoms. "So there is clear evidence of the potential health benefits of consuming isoflavone-rich foods such as soy, however consumption in the form of a gum has not been extensively studied and such products may be simply another food gimmick", added Williamson.

IE6 vs. IE7 vs. Firefox 2.0 vs. Firefox 1.5 vs. Safari 3.0 vs. Opera 9 - In browser market share deathmatch
By: Marius Oiaga, Technology News Editor - Softpedia

Windows has become a crowded platform as far as browsers are concerned. There is only so much room to grow, and Apple has introduced Safari 3.0 into the equation in June. Apple Chief Executive Officer Stave Jobs, revealed since the birthday of Safari 3.0 on 32-bit and 64-bit Windows Vista and Windows XP that it was settling for nothing else than dominating the browser market together with Microsoft's Internet Explorer, downplaying the
relevance of household name such as Opera and Firefox.

But the fact of the matter is that the browser market for solutions running on top of the Windows platform is dominated by Internet Explorer and Firefox. In this context, Microsoft's Internet Explorer 6.0 is still top dog in the market share deathmatch. In accordance with statistics made public by Market Share by Net Applications, IE6 accounts for 46.21% of the browser market. Following the introduction of IE7, the share of Internet Explorer 6 began to erode. From October 2006 and until February 2007, IE6 dropped from 77.17% to 49.35%.

In the same period, IE7 exploded from 3.18% in the month of its launch to 29.12% in February 2007, after the general release of Windows Vista. Mid 2007 finds Internet Explorer 7 in holding no less than 32.02% of the browser market, and runner up to IE6.

Firefox 2.0 has been also expanding its market share constantly in spite of IE7. From just 0.69% in October 2006, Firefox 2.0 is now accounting for 11.07% of the market. Mozilla has even sacrificed version 1.5 of its open source browser for Firefox 2.0. With support cut at the end of June, Firefox 1.5 dropped to just 2.85% of the browser market.

Touted as an epitome of speed, performance, design and security Safari 3.0 underperformed in terms of audience. Apple's browser for Windows, at the end of the first, is credited only with 0.18% of the market, despite having topped 1 million downloads in the first two days. Safari 3.0 for Windows has still a long way to go, as it is just a public beta scheduled for availability in October concomitantly with Leopard, but judging by the cold welcome it got, it will fail to be a worthy opponent.

But even with Safari 3.0 present, Opera delivered quite a performance jumping from 0.73% to 0.90% in June. With the exception of new-comer Safari, Opera is the classic underdog but the last month brought a consistent growth in the adoption of the browser.

Bible Study / Who is Jesus?
July 03, 2007, 02:37:56 AM
HE IS JESUS
WHO IS HE?
IN CHEMISTRY, HE TURNED
WATER TO WINE.

IN BIOLOGY, HE WAS BORN
WITHOUT THE
NORMAL CONCEPTION;

IN PHYSICS, HE DISAPPROVED
THE LAW OF
GRAVITY WHEN HE ASCENDED
INTO HEAVEN;

IN ECONOMICS, HE
DISAPPROVED THE LAW OF
DIMINISHING RETURN BY
FEEDING 5000 MEN
WITH TWO FISHES & 5 LOAVES OF
BREAD;

IN MEDICINE, HE CURED THE
SICK AND THE BLIND WITHOUT
ADMINISTERING A SINGLE
DOSE OF DRUGS,

IN HISTORY, HE IS THE
BEGINNING AND THE END;

IN GOVERNMENT, HE SAID
THAT HE SHALL BE
CALLED WONDERFUL
COUNSELOR, PRINCE OF
PEACE;

IN RELIGION, HE SAID NO
ONE COMES TO
THE FATHER EXCEPT THROUGH
HIM;

SO. WHO IS HE?
HE IS JESUS!

HE IS WORTHY.
THE EYES BEHOLDING THIS
MESSAGE SHALL NOT BEHOLD EVIL,

THE HAND THAT WILL
SEND THIS MESSAGE TO
EVERYBODY SHALL
NOT LABOR IN VAIN,

AND THE MOUTH SAYING
AMEN TO THIS PRAYER SHALL
SMILE FOREVER.

REMAIN IN GOD AND
SEEK HIS FACE ALWAYS. AMEN

IN GOD I'VE FOUND
EVERYTHING!

The Greatest Man in History:

Jesus had no servants, yet
they called Him Master.

Had no degree, yet they
called Him Teacher.

Had no medicines, yet they
called Him Healer.

He had no army, yet kings
feared Him.

He won no military
battles, yet He
conquered the world.

He committed no crime, yet
they crucified Him.

He was buried in a tomb,
yet He lives today.

I feel honored to serve
such a Leader
who loves us!

If you believe in God and
in Jesus Christ His Son ..
spread this to all your friends.

If not... just ignore it.
If you ignore it, just
remember that Jesus
said ...

"If you deny me before
man, I will deny you before my Father in
Heaven.

Firefox a.k.a. the Not-Safe-To-Use Browser! - New vulnerability discovered in the application
By: Bogdan Popa, Security and Search Engines Editor - Softpedia

Security company Secunia reported a new vulnerability in the famous browser Firefox that can allow an attacker to obtain private information about the user. Basically, the exploitation can be conducted through a malicious form that requires users to enter their sensitive details. Although Secunia rated the flaw as "not critical", you're encouraged to avoid opening untrusted websites and to
write information on unsecure forms. According to the notification, the vulnerability affects Mozilla Firefox 2.0.0.4 but other versions might be affected too.

"Carl Hardwick has discovered a weakness in Firefox, which potentially can be exploited by malicious people to disclose sensitive information. The weakness is caused due to a design error within the focus handling of form fields and can potentially be exploited by changing the focus from a "textarea" field to a "file upload" form field via the "OnKeyDown" event.

Successful exploitation allows an arbitrary file on the user's system to be uploaded to a malicious web site, but requires that the user is tricked into typing the file name into a "textarea" input form," Secunia said in the advisory.

This new vulnerability is useful especially for the Firefox competitors, Microsoft's Internet Explorer and the recently-released Apple Safari for Windows. As you might know, Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO, said that Safari for Windows is the most powerful browser for this platform because it recorded better loading times than its competitors, managing to improve the browsing experience. However, it was proved that none of the current Internet solutions are 100 percent secure because both Internet Explorer and Safari were involved in security notifications.

As you might know, Mozilla Firefox is the famous application that introduced the tab browsing concept that allows the users to navigate the internet into a single window. After a short period of time, the rivals from Microsoft introduced the same concept in IE 7, the application that is described as the best web-browser ever created.

Internet Explorer Killed Firefox and Safari - The bitter taste of eroding market share
By: Marius Oiaga, Technology News Editor - Softpedia

Firefox and Safari are no match for Internet Explorer. When it comes down to audience and installed base, Microsoft's Internet Explorer far outweighs its direct rivals Mozilla Firefox and Apple's Safari. Mozilla was at a turning point the past two months. It killed support for Firefox 1.5 and it introduced automatic upgrades to Firefox 2.0. But the last update for Firefox 1.5 with the build number 1.5.0.12 and the Firefox 2.0.0.4 update rollout have done little to benefit Mozilla's position on the browser market.

According to statistics made public by Market Share by Net Applications, Internet Explorer
consolidated and increased its installed base while both Firefox and Safari got to experience the bitter taste of eroding market share. IE is credited with a percentage of 78.84% of the browser market in June, up from 78.67% in May. IE has been on a continually descendant trajectory for the past couple of years, with Firefox gaining up momentum in the background.

But April 2007 signaled a change as Microsoft started to regain the lost terrain. The growing adoption of Windows Vista is behind the increasing share of Internet Explorer. XP users concerned with browser security that have turned to Firefox as the only valid alternative to IE6 are now converting back to IE7.

Mozilla's open source browser is stagnating, stopped dead in its tracks. Firefox's market share grew just 0.01% in June compared to May. But at 14.55% the past month, Mozilla has at least managed to stop a drop in market share that saw it lose approximately 1% from April.

Enlarge picture
June has also not been a good month for Safari. On June 11, Apple Chief Executive Office Steve Jobs, introduced Safari 3.0 for 32-bit and 64-bit Windows Vista and Windows XP. Following the first 48 hours of availability of the Safari 3.0 Public Beta, Apple applauded over 1 million browser downloads. And yet Safari lost a consistent slice of market share, and is now down to just 4.49% from 4.82%. This is of course not a good thing for Apple, as the Cupertino-based company has touted Safari as the fastest and most secure browser on the market.

But while end users are starting to say NO to Firefox and Safari, Opera, along with IE, is also enjoying an increase in audience. Opera's market share grew from 0.74% to 0.91% in just one month. The general tendency is now reversed, and while users have been looking for an IE alternative in Firefox, with Safari and Opera having a loyal but limited and stagnant user base, now Internet Explorer and Opera are growing in the detriment of Safari and Firefox.
