one person who could cook really good bam-i is my yaya arsing. my yaya since i was a wee born lad, since i was jes bern a wee lil lad. when i went back in 2010, yaya arsing was there. instead of hugging me she kusi my cheeks and said, "arang dakua naman ka ondoy!"

and how hard was her kusi. left my cheeks really red. sakit'a uy.

she knew how to make me smile afterwards tho. she made bam-i, and the pinakbet like the way i like it. oh shiyeeet man! yaya arsing's cooking is like DA BEST, yo.

I can't find that kind of cooking anywhere here. Never. No where.

Only in Valencia. In Sawang. My house. Sa kusina where yaya arsing is at.

Very sad. One of our friends sa facebook nibakasyon sa Bohol last Thursday from NY only wa momata gahapon Sunday (RP time). Na comatose sud sa iyang hotel then ganina nabalitaan na lang nako nga na game over na. Nuuli na siya sa Ginoo after 2 days lang sa Bohol :(

I'm sorry to hear of your friend's passing, Fr. Roel. I will include your friend in my intentions for today. Sometimes, we wonder why things happen to us and to our friends , but it is not our question to asky why these things happen, but sometimes, we should pray for the Grace to accept the things we cannot change. And pray to accept God's mercy. May God have mercy on the soul of the recently departed, and grant strength and comfort to friends and family.

We find comfort in knowing that death is not the end, but only marks the beginning. Death may be the end of our mortal life, this we call our pilgrimage, but is only the beginning. If we believe in the resurrection of the body and soul, and entrust ourself to the promises of Christ and in His mercy, then we do not fear death.

We are reminded that Christ is the Way, the Truth and the LIFE. Whoever believes in Him and tho he or she may die, he or she will Live. Remember this my friends that Our LORD JESUS CHRIST is the Truth, the Way and the Life. Even tho we may die, we will surely live forever in Heaven.

And what beauty it will be to awaken...and to see the Face of God...

May God bless all of us and forgive all of us our sins and our transgressions. May we also be enkindled to forgive each other who may trespass against us. And pledge to refrain from every inclination to sin.

I am so very happy to hear of this, Bem. Yes, AVM is a serious medical condition that usually has significant consequences to patients here in the US. Any clotting or ischemia-related damage to the brain and associated structures of the nervous system is a serious condition. You are, truly, very lucky and blessed to have survived the ordeal.

Praise God. May God always bless you.

Our Savior has left to His Church the Sacrament of Penance or Confession, so that by means of it we may be washed clean of our iniquities every time we are guilty. Never allow your heart, then, to remain a slave of sin for very long, since there is such a simple and easy remedy close at hand.

"Abide with me; fast falls the eventide;
The darkness deepens; Lord with me abide.
When other helpers fail and comforts flee,
Help of the helpless, O abide with me.

Swift to its close ebbs out life's little day;
Earth's joys grow dim; its glories pass away;
Change and decay in all around I see;
O Thou who changest not, abide with me.

Not a brief glance I beg, a passing word;
But as Thou dwell'st with Thy disciples, Lord,
Familiar, condescending, patient, free.
Come not to sojourn, but abide with me.

Come not in terrors, as the King of kings,
But kind and good, with healing in Thy wings,
Tears for all woes, a heart for every pleaâ€"
Come, Friend of sinners, and thus bide with me.

Thou on my head in early youth didst smile;
And, though rebellious and perverse meanwhile,
Thou hast not left me, oft as I left Thee,
On to the close, O Lord, abide with me.

I need Thy presence every passing hour.
What but Thy grace can foil the tempter's power?
Who, like Thyself, my guide and stay can be?
Through cloud and sunshine, Lord, abide with me.

I fear no foe, with Thee at hand to bless;
Ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness.
Where is death's sting? Where, grave, thy victory?
I triumph still, if Thou abide with me.

Hold Thou Thy cross before my closing eyes;
Shine through the gloom and point me to the skies.
Heaven's morning breaks, and earth's vain shadows flee;
In life, in death, O Lord, abide with me."

Verse:
I need You to soften my heart,
To break me apart.
I need You to open my eyes,
To see that You're shaping my life.

Pre-Chorus:
All I am,
I surrender.

Chorus:
Give me faith to trust what You say
That You're good, and Your love is great.
I'm broken inside, I give You my life.

Verse 2:
I need You to soften my heart,
To break me apart.
I need You to pierce through the dark
And cleanse every part of me.

Chorus

Bridge:
I may be weak, but
Your Spirit's strong in me.
My flesh may fail, but
My God You never will. (repeat)

Today is Sunday, brothers. Let us prepare to receive the Holy Eucharist today. And as we ponder on the efficacious graces we are to receive in taking the Body of Christ, let us remember that we are all part of the same Body. We are all part of the same Holy Catholic Church.

When we approach the Holy Eucharist, which is Jesus Ever Present, and receive Him into our body and our soul, as nourishment for our eternal soul. We ask for His forgiveness of our sins and strength for our daily pursuits.

Most importantly, we should also ask for the Grace to forgive and let go of contention, anger, and quarrels. We ask so much of God, yet he Gives and Provides for our needs anyways. Tho we be undeserving.

Let us ask ourselves if we have done enough to warrant His Love for us?

Did we make peace enough?

Did we foster Love?

If not, then, let us try to.

God Bless us all ! And may the Body of Christ preserve us for Eternal Life....

 (dedicated to John Paul II)

It is a voice for the voiceless
It is a voice that comes from the window.

It is a dim voice yet it illuminates
It is a howling voice yet is hopeful
It is an ailing voice yet is energetic.

It is a voice for peace on the eve of war
It is a voice for sanity on the eve of lunacy
It is a voice for order on the eve of anarchy.

It is a voice for the blood of the innocent
It is a voice for the good of our village

It comes through the window
I hear it through the window.

I see people of all colours under the window
I see children in whose name he cries
I see adults to whom he cries, Peace!
I see the aged who are worried of what
Heritage they will leave behind.

It is not a voice crying in the desert but
A voice crying in the middle of a city
It is not a lone voice but
A voice of the multitude and for the multitude.

It is an old voice with a sweet melody
It is an old voice with a melody of peace, joy and justice.
It is an old voice with a melody of faith, hope and love.

It is a voice that speaks in the name of the Way
It is a voice that speaks in the name of the Truth
It is a voice that speaks in the name of the Life

It is a voice that stops warriors
It is a voice that stops warmongers
It is a voice that stops troublemakers

Oh voice
What is the source of your secret?
What is the source of your force?

Could it be anything else but love?
Could it be anything else but a passion
For the Truth, the Way and the Life?

Your voice will sound in our ears forever

People of goodwill will forever dance to
The tune of your voice
People of goodwill will forever be grateful
For paving the road of peace.

In life there will be people who we meet that irk us.
This is natural.
This is human weakness.
But do not let these temporal inclination rule you.

Take on Christ, who commands us to Love ,
and promised us to strengthen us.

Walk with Christ in showing Love.
Those who irk you or have differences with you,
learn to Love them.
Graciously forgive them.
Graciously bless them.

And you will see the internal peace build.
For there is nothing that the Holy Spirit, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, cannot do.
To forgive and to love,
is to Honor the Lord Thy God.

#3145
Hatred and anger will destroy one's soul,
if day after day, these emotions do control,
for nothing positive will ever come from them,
unless you learn to forgive and love those towards which those emotions
stem.

Inspiration & Hope / The Presence of God
September 08, 2013, 02:38:33 PM
I see in every leaf movement
As playful breeze passes by
Barely disturbing a nesting bird
The presence of God.

The mantle of teeming wildflowers
Adorning the once barren plain
In the changing of the seasons
I feel the ever presence of God.

The ceaseless gurgling of the brook
As it meanders down its way,
Cacophony of myriad nature's sounds
Announce the presence of God.

Laughter of innocent children
Playing in parks or backyard
Enjoying their uncomplicated simple world
In the watchful presence of God.

Amidst life's tears and turmoil
Many mishaps and miscalculations
I sought solace and found comfort
In the loving presence of God.

In the hectic humdrum of daily living
Fast-paced rat race for material gain
Insatiable yearning for more, make no room
For the presence of God.

All the world's problems and woes
Are man-made, yet unacknowledged: religious wars
Hate crimes, ethnic cleansing, violence
Conveniently ignoring the presence of God.

If I am cognizant of God's love
And serve Him through my fellowmen
Then when my time comes I will bask
In the glory and presence of God.

For in the presence of God, there is no hate
Only brotherly love, peace, forgiveness
Understanding, compassion, helping hand
No evil can withstand the presence of God.

Bible Study / Teach us to forgive
September 08, 2013, 02:26:05 PM
 Your forgiveness is total,
no notebook,
tape recorder,
or post-it note
to remind you of that moment
when.……..
You take our confession,
offered with hands outstretched,
and gently,
like the loving
heavenly Father that you are,
put it to one side
to be forgotten.
No grudges, no itching for judgement,
no resentment or ill-will.
Not like us
who find it easy to say sorry,
but so hard to forgive
absolutely.
Forgive us, Father,
that we are often more willing
to accept forgiveness,
than to forgive,
more willing to accept your love,
than to share it with those
who have hurt us.
Teach us to forgive,
as you forgive

Amen.

Bible Study / Act of Consecration to Saint Anne
September 08, 2013, 02:20:22 PM
O Good and merciful Saint Anne,
in order to honour you with more zeal,
and pray to you with more confidence,
I come to consecrate myself to you,
for time and for eternity.

Hence I choose you,
after the most Blessed Virgin,
for my spiritual mother,
and my protectress before God.
I place in your keep my body and my soul,
my temporal needs
and my eternal interests.

I consecrate my mind to you,
that you may enlighten me in all things,
with the light of faith;
my heart,
that you may keep it full of love for Jesus and Mary;
my will,
that you may forever
keep it subsmissive to that of God;
and my body,
that you may make it forever
the temple of the Holy Ghost.

Obtain for me,
O Good Saint Anne,
the grace to fulfil faithfully,
after your example,
all the duties of my state of life
and to practise, like you,
all the virtues necessary to my salvation.
Grant that after having honoured and loved you on earth,
O dear and Good Saint Anne,
I may one day go to glorify you,
with God, Mary, the saints and the angels,
during all eternity.

Amen.

Bible Study / Act of Consecration to Jesus
September 08, 2013, 02:19:16 PM
Lord Jesus Christ, I consecrate myself today anew and without reserve to Your Divine Heart. I consecrate to You my body with all its senses, my soul with all its faculties, my entire being. I consecrate to You all my thoughts, words and deeds, all my sufferings and labours, all my hopes, consolations and joys. In particular I consecrate to You this poor heart of mine so that it may love only You and may be consumed as a victim in the fire of your love.

I place my trust in You without reserve and I hope for the remission of my sins through Your infinite mercy. I place within Your hands all my cares and anxieties. I promise to love You and to honour You till the last moment of my life, and to spread, as much as I can, devotion to Your most Sacred Heart.
Do with me what You will, my Jesus. I deserve no other reward except Your greater glory and Your holy love. Take this offering of myself and give me a place within Your Divine Heart forever.
Amen.

Merciful Father
I am guilty of sin
I confess my sins before you
and I am sorry for them.
Your promises are just;
therefore I trust that you will forgive my sins
and cleanse me from every stain of sin.
Jesus himself is the propitiation
for my sins and the sin of the whole world.
I put my hope in his atonement.
May my sins be forgiven through His name
and in His blood may my soul be made clean.

This prayer was written by St. Francis de Sales

O my God, I thank you and I praise
you for accomplishing your holy
and all-lovable will without any regard for mine.
With my whole heart,
in spite of my heart,
do I receive this cross I feared so much!

It is the cross of Your choice,
the cross of Your love.
I venerate it;
nor for anything in the world
would I wish that it had not come,
since You willed it.

I keep it with gratitude and with joy,
as I do everything that comes from Your hand;
and I shall strive to carry it without letting it drag,
with all the respect
and all the affection which Your works deserve.

Amen.

My God! When will we receive the grace to have the holy virgin come and be born in our hearts? For my part I see that I am unworthy of this favor, and certainly you think the same about yourselves. But was not the Divine Son born in a stable? Courage, therefore! Let us prepare a place for Mary. She loves humble places of stark simplicity, yet spacious in charity. She is very happy to stay close to a stable and at the foot of the cross; she was not worried about having to go into exile in Egypt, far from every comfort, so long as she had her Child with her.

Let us walk along through the deep valleys of the humble virtues and we will find ourselves on both roses and thorns; these include the charity that stands out amid both internal and external afflictions, the lilies of purity, the violets of mortification. Particularly appealing to me are the three small virtues of gentleness of heart, poverty of spirit and simplicity of life. Poverty of spirit and simplicity of life are exercised by visiting the sick, serving the poor and consoling the afflicted.

some peace during the night. its 3:13 am. this is what we call 'post-admission' hours. as in most patients are in bed and sleeping (some are sedated) lol ! mao ni ang time'a ang mga nurses mo duwaduwa sa ilang iphones, mag sulatsulat sa facebook, and chit chatting. earlier, i was making rounds to check up on my patients. one of the head nurses said to me, "why so serious, doc? aren't you happy everything is quiet?"

ning ngisi ra ko. silly lady. doesn't she know that a code blue could occur anytime?

there is never a true 'peaceful' time in the hospital. like a marine, a physician (and nurse) should always be alert. ready. prepared. for the next admission.

but alas, it's all quiet here. in the western front.

5) Redirect arguments. If you find yourself constantly having to converse with a person who always has to be right, become a master of misdirection. Change the subject to disarm them, or guide the discussion into more neutral territory. Try to find a topic that you agree on, then you can both be right.
#3179
4) Use productive language. Just as resorting to anger won't improve the situation, resorting to petty language won't help things either. Countering an argument with something like "That's just stupid," won't get you anywhere and will most likely put the other person on the defensive.

Genuinely listen to the other person. Maybe they really do have a valid argument. If they don't, at least you will understand what they are saying and can better reason with them.

Validate the other person's opinions with phrases like "I understand what you mean" or "I can see where you're coming from." You can then respectfully offer your counter argument.
#3180
3) Consider your relationship to the person. Different relationships will often dictate how the situation should be handled.

If the person is a close friend, family member or spouse, be honest with them. Tell them you find it difficult to have a conversation when they insist on always being right. They may not even have realized what they were doing. If it happens again, gently bring it to their attention.

If the person is a coworkerâ€"or even worse, your bossâ€"approach the situation more carefully. In a friendly but assertive manner, explain to them that you feel like they are not respectfully validating your own thoughts and ideas. Point out that you value their opinion and would like them to give you the same consideration.

If the person is a simple acquaintance or even a stranger, you likely don't need to be arguing with them at all. Respectfully remove yourself from the situation.
#3181
2) Consider the subject you are discussing. Is it even worth arguing about? If you're debating something like the best kinds of pizza toppings, it is probably best to just let it go.

Recognize when the situation is getting out of control. There is a difference between a friendly argument and a combative situation where people can become angry or hurt. At that point it is best to end the discussion so both of you can calm down.
#3182
1)  Keep calm. Getting angry and escalating an argument will not benefit either one of you. You might even end up saying something you'll seriously regret.
#3183
Trying to have a conversation with a person who believes they are always right can be difficult and downright frustrating. When you are dealing with an argumentative individual, here are some steps you can use to help control the situation.

Today I got to debride a patient with necrotizing fascitis. The bacteria , streptococcus pyogenes (which is a gram positive, catalase positive, complete homolytic, group A strep) had infected through the patient's dermis layer, and into the fascia. We had to go in and completely debride the entire skin layer of her lower leg.

We put the patient on iv ampicillin. I was so happy that i got to debride the patient. This is a case we only get to see on the books, but to be able to actually treat it...ehehehe! Wowzers! ;D

How fortunate is that soul who is willing to have a great deal of tribulation before departing from this life! How can one possibly learn how to love deeply and sincerely if not among the spines, the crosses and the feeling of abandonment over a long period? Our dear Savior thus proved his limitless love in the agony of His passion. Learn well how to love Christ on the bed of sorrow; on this bed He formed your heart before creating it, foreseeing it in His divine plan. Yes the Savior has numbered all your sorrows and all your sufferings. He has paid for them with His blood, with all the patience and love that is necessary. Be satisfied, therefore, to accept generously all that God has in store for you.

Overcoming Resistance to Mercy

The particular virtue needed by anyone struggling with resistance to mercy is confidence in God, trust in God. That is the intersection of faith, hope, and love, and it flows especially out of meditating on God’s goodness (this would be a good theme of her daily mental prayer and her spiritual reading). Making conscious acts of obedience to God’s will (i.e., consciously doing even the most mundane activities because we recognize God’s will in them â€" as expressed in the Commandments and the responsibilities of our state in life, for example) is always an effective way to exercise that trust. When it’s time to wash the dishes, I can do it just because I have to, which is fine, or I can do it with an interior act of trustful surrender to God’s will as expressed in my normal duties, which is better, and which exercises our confidence in God.

The real growth will also happen as she comes to understand her particular reasons for having difficulty in trusting God â€" usually the reasons go much deeper than we realize. God will reveal them little by little, when he sees fit. We just have to keep asking for light, and following where he leads.

God bless you!

Root Sins in Perspective

That said, I think it is important to remember that when we identify our root sin (sensuality, vanity, or pride), we are not saying that we have ONLY that sin â€" all of us actually have all three tendencies: tendencies to base our life’s meaning on comfort, or other people’s opinions, or our own achievements. It’s just that, because of personality characteristics and formation experiences, one of the three is almost always more influential in our day-to-day lives.

Also, it’s always good to remember that a program of life is useful above all for finding ways to direct our intentional exercise of and growth in virtue. It helps us answer the question: “What is God asking me to work on in my spiritual life right now?” Especially in the early stages of spiritual growth, this approach will require us to identify specific and common manifestations of selfishness in our daily lives. In overcoming or changing those, we will have to intentionally develop counteracting virtues. But those specific manifestations of selfishness can be symptoms of more than one sinful tendency. So by overemphasizing our root sin, we can sometimes confuse ourselves. The real value of knowing one’s root sin comes in being able to recognize where the devil will more likely try to trip us up; if he knows where there is a structural weakness in the wall around our interior castle, he will try to exploit it.

Q: Dear Father John, I am helping a woman in her spiritual growth (mainly through helping her come up with a program of life), and something came up that I wanted to ask you about. She has shared with me some of what she regrets, and some of what she is having a hard time forgiving herself for. Intellectually she knows that God forgives, but she hasn’t accepted His mercy into her heart. I am guessing that this resistance is a manifestation of spiritual pride. Is that correct? And what virtues would help her overcome this? Abandonment? Humility? Mercy?

A: God bless you for helping a fellow-pilgrim along the way of holiness!

I can’t really give a specific answer to this question. So many factors are at play. It would really depend on how central a force her resistance to mercy plays in her life, and on the roots of why she resists mercy. There could be some family-of-origin issues that may be exacerbated by either pride or vanity.

Direct Inspirations

Thirdly, God can speak to our souls through words, ideas, or inspirations that we recognize clearly as coming right from him. Personally, I have a vivid memory of the first time the thought of the priesthood came into my mind. I wasn’t even Catholic yet. No one had told me that I should become a priest. And yet, in the aftermath of a powerful spiritual experience, the thought simply appeared in my mind, fully formed, with compelling clarity. I knew without any doubt that the thought had come directly from God, that he had spoken to me directly, giving me an inspiration.

Most of us have had some, even if only a few, experiences like this, when we knew God was saying something specific to us, even though we heard the words only in our hearts, and not with our physical ears. God can speak in this way even when we are not at prayer. But a mature prayer life will make our souls more sensitive to these direct inspirations, and create more room for God to speak directly more often, if he wishes to do so.

Jesus assured us that any effort we make in prayer will bring grace into our souls, whether we feel it or not: “Seek, and you shall find; ask, and it shall be given to you; knock, and the door will be opened” (Matthew 7:7-8). But at the same time, we have to always remember that we must live our entire lives, including our prayer lives, in the light of our faith, not only in accordance with what we perceive and with what we feel. As St. Paul said so powerfully, “We walk by faith, not by sight” (2 Corinthians 5:7).
