Abando highest-paid import in Korea league Rhenz Abando will get around 237 million won or P13.89  million in his first season with Anyang KGC Ginseng Corporation in the Korean Basketball League, the highest amount that will be paid by a club team to an Asian import.

The deal involving the former National Collegiate Athletic Association's Most Valuable Player from the Letran Knights has exceeded the league's salary cap, according to reports from Korea.

Abando got this agreement with team executives months after he decided to forgo his final year in college. The league considers this as the highest amount offered to any import or registered Asian Quarter player.

World Daily News / Sorokin Scandal
October 11, 2022, 09:06:44 AM
The 31-year-old Sorokin, whose extraordinary story inspired a fictionalized series on Netflix and who has been a social-media phenomenon, was freed on bail late Friday and immediately placed under house arrest, with an ankle bracelet confining her to her modest Manhattan apartment.

She had spent the last year and a half in a detention center north of New York City operated by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, known as ICE, convicted of overstaying her tourist visa.

Sorokin was first arrested in 2017, then sentenced in 2019 to two years in a New York detention center on charges including grand larceny. No sooner had she served that sentence — she was released early for good behavior — than ICE agents detained her.

Since February she has faced a deportation order to Germany, but in a weekend interview in her Manhattan building with The New York Times, Sorokin said she was fighting to stay in the United States.

"Letting them deport me would have been like a sign of capitulation — confirmation of this perception of me as this shallow person who only cares about obscene wealth, and that's just not the reality," she told the Times.

"I could have left," Sorokin added, "but I chose not to because I'm trying to fix what I've done wrong. I have so much history in New York and I felt like if I were in Europe, I'd be running from something."

Passing herself off in 2016 and 2017 as Anna Delvey — a German heiress who claimed to have a fortune of $60 million — Sorokin insinuated herself into the upper reaches of New York society, persuading members of the elite to invest in an exclusive arts club bearing her name.

She had a rare talent for spinning elaborate lies with a preternatural poise that made them seem believable.

Sorokin obtained tens of thousands of dollars in loans, free trips on a private jet and accommodation in some of New York's swankiest boutique hotels.

In all, prosecutors said, she swindled the unsuspecting out of $275,000.

The Russian-born Sorokin, who holds German citizenship, is the daughter of a truck driver and a shopkeeper who emigrated to Germany in 2007.

In her oversized designer glasses that were something of a trademark, she frequented the fashion worlds of London and Paris before moving to New York in 2013 for Fashion Week.

Her story eventually caught the attention of American producer Shonda Rhimes ("Grey's Anatomy," "Scandal"), who turned it into the Netflix miniseries "Inventing Anna," starring Julia Garner. | via Agence France-Presse

Philippine Business News / Philippines' Dollar Reserves
October 10, 2022, 03:31:55 PM
(PH Business World) THE Philippines' dollar reserves declined to a two-year low as of end-September, as the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) said it has been "active" in the foreign exchange market to curb the peso's depreciation against the US dollar.

The gross international reserves (GIR) stood at $95.01 billion as of end-September, falling by 2.4% from the $97.44 billion as of end-August, data from the central bank showed.

Dollar reserves are important so we can pay for goods and services bought from other countries.

Retire and Live in the Philippines / PESO Congress 2022
October 10, 2022, 07:30:58 AM
By Allan Sareno Fresno
Job displacement, unemployment, and underemployment were the major storylines during the time COVID-19 threw its punches that shook, rattled, and floored our country's labor market.

The government, private sector, and other players clung to each other to help the country get back on its feet and as we move forward, we want to change the narrative.

Reconstructing a better and more resilient labor market is a way to address the jobs crisis that is expected to be felt for years to come. Job creation and connecting jobs to the jobseekers are still prerequisites in revitalizing the world of work.

This October, public employment managers throughout the country will once again converge to find effective ways in providing tangible support to the labor force in search of gainful employment.

Berlin's annual Festival of Lights, which sees many of the city's iconic buildings illuminated with various light displays, kicked off on Friday.

However, the 18th iteration of the festival is a bit different than the previous ones. Europe's ongoing energy crisis and calls to reduce energy consumption have forced the festival's organizers to scale down the size of the festival, including fewer venues, shorter durations for the light spectacles, and the use of more energy-efficient lighting. The aim is to use 75% less electricity than the year before.

The festival, whose motto this year is "Visions of our Future" and goes until October 16, wasn't celebrated among all, with some wondering whether such an event is prudent during an energy crisis.

Who's Who in the Philippines / Virgilio Atega Sr.
October 09, 2022, 08:55:44 AM
By Moses Joshua B. Atega
TODAY is the birthday of Virgilio Atega Sr., the wartime mayor of Cabadbaran  during  the  Japanese  occupation.  A young historian Casey Vi Tolentino Batitang wrote "Virgilio was someone who risked his  life for  Cabadbaran  by  pretentiously cooperating  with  the Japanese.  He also secretly worked with the Cabadbaran Guerrillas by supplying intelligence about the Japanese movement in Agusan. ... Also, as a lawyer, the testimonies of people, whom his family encountered, surfaces  that he  was the  kind of  a person who  do  good things  for the  people without the expectation of great reward. Philippine Business News / Cebu Daily Wage 2022
October 09, 2022, 08:26:56 AM
The Freeman Newspaper: The labor group Partido Manggagawa (PM) declared that the real value of wages of workers in Metro Cebu have been reduced by P51 due to worsening inflation.

The PM said that just recently, the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) announced that headline inflation has risen to 6.9 percent for September 2022.

"Cebu workers support the call for a P100 legislated across-the-broad wage increase," said Dennis Derige, PM-Cebu spokesperson.

Derige said that the P435 minimum wage in Metro Cebu is only worth P384 due to increases in prices of food, electricity and other basic commodities.

The PSA also noted that inflation for electricity and gas was among the highest.

In 2018, the PM had already estimated that the daily cost of living is around P1,300.

"Obviously we need to update this figure as inflation has ratcheted up in the past four years. Whatever the exact number, we need urgent action from the government and Congress. Thus, our call for a P100 wage hike within the first 100 days of the new government," Derige said in a statement.

He added that the focus now is on worsening inflation that has eroded workers' nominal wages.
"But we have not even tackled growing inequality due to the stagnation of real wages while productivity is booming," he said.

He said that from 2001 to 2016, labor productivity grew by at least 50 percent, yet the real wages did not grow at all as workers have been denied their fair share in the fruits of production.

Aside from the specific wage hike demand, PM also asked for a comprehensive government response on the worsening economic crisis and other "covariate shocks" that has led to mass layoffs and the rise in unemployment to 5.3 percent in August or an additional 79,000 jobless Filipinos.

Covariate shocks, Derige explained, are disasters that affect whole communities.

It can be recalled that some 4,000 garment workers were retrenched at Sports City in the Mactan Export Processing  Zone in Lapu-Lapu City and a few thousand workers also lost their jobs due to the temporary closure of Coca-Cola plants in Iloilo, Bohol, Davao, Cavite, Zamboanga, and Camarines Sur.

"The government must set in place social protection systems that mitigate the impact on jobs, income, health and well-being of people. Mass layoffs and strong typhoons are all covariate shocks and the new normal in our lives. Social protection is one response to this challenge," Derige further said.

The PM is pushing for public employment, preferably in climate jobs, for unemployed workers over a period of 100 days to nine months at minimum wages or P10,000, whichever is higher.

The group is also calling for wage subsidies equivalent to 75 percent of the prevailing minimum wage to save jobs of workers in micro, medium and small enterprises. — Mitchelle L. Palaubsanon/GMR

World Daily News / Crimea Bridge Blown Up
October 09, 2022, 07:34:56 AM
The speaker of Crimea's Kremlin-backed regional parliament immediately accused Ukraine, though Moscow didn't apportion blame.

Ukrainian officials have repeatedly threatened to strike the bridge and some lauded the attack, but Kyiv stopped short of claiming responsibility.

The bombing came a day after Russian President Vladimir Putin turned 70, dealing him a humiliating blow that could lead him to up the ante in his war on Ukraine.

Russia's National Anti-Terrorism Committee said that a truck bomb caused seven railway cars carrying fuel to catch fire, resulting in a "partial collapse of two sections of the bridge."

A man and a woman who were riding in a vehicle across the bridge were killed by the explosion and their bodies were recovered, Russia's Investigative Committee said. It didn't provide details on the third victim.

The 19-kilometer (12-mile) bridge across the Kerch Strait linking the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov opened in 2018 and is the longest in Europe. The $3.6 billion project is a tangible symbol of Moscow's claims on Crimea and has provided an essential link to the Crimean Peninsula, which Russia annexed from Ukraine in 2014.

The bridge has train and automobile sections. Russia's National Anti-Terrorism Committee specified that the explosion and fire led to the collapse of the two sections of one of the two links of the automobile bridge, while another link was intact.

Russia's Energy Ministry said Crimea has enough fuel for 15 days, adding that it was working on ways to replenish stock.

Authorities suspended passenger train traffic across the bridge until further notice. Putin was informed about the explosion and he ordered the creation of a government panel to deal with the emergency. | via Associated Press

Philippine Provinces / Quality of Cebu Province Roads
October 09, 2022, 07:04:21 AM
Written by Joel Sanico Aba

I've gained enough courage as a private individual to rant a little. Please don't get me wrong. I love Cebu and it is my second home. But i want a discussion.

Why are poorer provinces like Negros Oriental, Negros Occidental, Bohol, even Pampanga, Davao Regions, Panay Island, Butuan areas, General Santos, have consistently better, wider, more paved roads compared to the renowned "Richest" Province of Cebu?

Just today, I drove from Cebu to Negros Oriental.  As soon as I arrive Negros Oriental, I noticed the big difference. The second photo was taken as I enter Tanjay. It's paved, consistently smooth and the same goes when you travel northernmost or southernmost. Bacolod, Negros Occidental have even more amazing, well-paved and consistently smooth roads. Huge trucks pass this area especially during sugarcane harvest season.

As drivers and passengers, we know so well. Driving along Cebu coastal roads is like passing through an EXTREME turbulent flight. Makalooy. Roads have "holes that have holes in it". You wouldn't know how many holes there are that consists a singular hole.

I passed by the old Carcar Market this morning, trying to manuever a car on a seeming canal in the middle of a road. The water is too dark, but there's no other way. You wouldn't know how deep the canal is unless you try. When it dries up, thick dusts will eat you up.

You have to keep your eyes wide open, otherwise, your wheels would get stuck in the middle of two pavements where a deep line separates - between the new gutter and the old road. If you know what I mean. You will sway as you drive. What a way to keep you awake.

When you pass Sibonga to Santander, the same consistent situation. Tiny roads, i don't mind. But just when you thought the surface is smooth, you will jolt because suddenly, you find your car jumping off from a "surprise hole" as seen on the first photo. And because there are too many surprise holes like this... girl, you better keep your foot on the breaks all the time!

Though there are frequent constructions, I could tell you that this is the same situation ever since I drove the Cebu south coastal roads for the first time, 5 years ago. Sad.

But why does being the "Rich Province" reflect not at least on these aspects? While Cebu has amazing cultural background, other provinces such as Iloilo  have truly overtaken it in terms of roadside cleanliness and overall road development in my opinion.

Poorer provinces are too passionate on attaining a level of competitiveness and development. Maybe... Cebu LGUs and chiefs probably know it's "already Cebu" and that it needs not to compete with anyone? Possibly. Feel ko lang.

I hope I am wrong, and a speedy change could happen to turn these things around. I still believe Cebu will be competitive despite being "on top" and "up there". Because it terms of road quality at the moment, the truth is.... poorer provinces definitely overtook the richest.

ROBERTO L. ZAMORA JR., MPA
21 years old
Master in Public Administration
Meritus Awardee, Bronze Medallion
CJAGS President 2019-2020
Cor Jesu College
Class of 2020

16 years ago, if I may recall, my Dad graduated Master in Public Administration. As a curious kid, I asked him what the future awaits if I pursue this course, and he replied that since he works in the government, he should know the systems and operations necessary to deliver good public service. From that very moment, I promised myself to follow his footsteps. Now, I have already reached that plan, a dream, while also working in the City Government.

All these achievements would not be made possible without the incessant and utmost support of my parents, family, friends, workmates/CIO and LYDC Family, professors, classmates, GC MPA Buddies, fellow officers in CJAGSS, and KKDAT. Thank you so much for your astounding cheers and motivation.

To Cor Jesu College, thank you for drawing out the best in me since high school. Truly, my beloved institution produces well-rounded graduates.

You are all part of this success, and I'll forever treasure that.

Above all, to our Almighty Father, thank you for  strengthening me all the way despite my doubts and challenges.

The quest of learning continues. Another years of striving hard to reach of becoming someone in the future. Never stop learning, never stop praying. I love you all from the bottom of my heart!

Inspiration & Hope / How to Love
October 09, 2022, 06:35:31 AM
Devotional
HOW TO LOVE

These things I command you, that ye love one another.
—John 15:17

How are we to love? We are to love as God loves us . . . we are to show acceptance and appreciation . . . [to] accept each other as God accepts us. Too many parents refuse to accept and appreciate their children for what they are. That is why a million American children ran away from home last year. A team of Yale researchers has concluded that the majority of these runaways were attempting to escape an unhappy family situation. They yearned to be appreciated.

The causes of delinquency, we are told, are broken homes, poverty, lack of recreational facilities, poor physical health, racism, working mothers, and so on . . . The experts never seem to mention the lack of love, or the lack of faith in God. Yet these are the two most important elements for an adolescent's successful maturity.

How long has it been since you praised your children instead of criticizing them? David prayed for Solomon and daily praised him, and we are to praise our children daily. Praise your wife. I have found that praise goes a lot further than criticism. Everybody needs to be appreciated.

Prayer for the day

It is so easy to criticize those close to me; but Lord, give me Your unreserved love so that they may know how deeply I appreciate them.

Have a Blessed day ahead!

END-SEPTEMBER 2022 GIR LEVEL SETTLES AT US$95 BILLION

The country's gross international reserves (GIR) level, based on preliminary data, settled at US$95.0 billion as of end-September 2022 from the end-August 2022 GIR level of US$97.4 billion.[1] The latest GIR level represents a more than adequate external liquidity buffer equivalent to 7.6 months' worth of imports of goods and payments of services and primary income.[2] Moreover, it is also about 6.8 times the country's short-term external debt based on original maturity and 4.1 times based on residual maturity.[3], [4]

The month-on-month decrease in the GIR level reflected mainly the National Government's (NG) payments of its foreign currency debt obligations and downward adjustment in the value of the BSP's gold holdings due to the decrease in the price of gold in the international market.

Similarly, the net international reserves, which refers to the difference between the BSP's reserve assets (GIR) and reserve liabilities (short-term foreign debt and credit and loans from the International Monetary Fund (IMF)), decreased by US$2.4 billion to US$95.0 billion as of end-September 2022 from the end-August 2022 level of US$97.4 billion.

Job Opportunity / Freelance Opportunity for Filipinos
October 08, 2022, 07:17:06 AM
By Angel Abella
The year was 2006, an October. Minimum wage in Davao was P7,500 per month. I wasn't a college graduate.

I was having an early morning interview for an online job after an acquaintance referred me to the position. Interviewer was based in the US.

After being able to satisfactorily answer the interviewer's questions regarding the work (with the help of my acquaintance who was chatting with me in another chat box), it was time to ask me the $$$ question.

Interviewer: So how much are you expecting to earn from this position?

Me to Acquaintance: Nagtatanong na po siya kung magkano ineexpect ko na sweldo. Ano po sasagutin ko?

Acquiantance: Sabihin mo $400-$500

(Back then, $1 = P50. So that's roughly P20,000 - P25,000. So syempre, nashock ang lola niyo.)

Me: Sure ba po yan?

A: Just type it.

And so I did. What happened next came more of a shock to me.

Me to Interviewer: $400 to $500

I: Okay, let's make it $450.

Is this for real? Yung puso ko tumalon-talon sa saya. Oh my god!

And in my pajamas, at 6:00 in the morning, pumunta ako sa isang internet cafe para mag-aral ng mabilisan ng kailangan kong aralin.

Imagine, back then, wala akong alam. Buti may kakilala ako to coach me on what to say.

I want to make the world a better place :D)

Ngayon, online job hirings are available everywhere. But this time, the competition is fierce.

It would be nice if you have mentors or coaches who can guide you on what to do so you can get that dream online job: the one where you can earn more than enough, where you'll be able to use your God-given skills and talents to provide for your family and, most especially, for yourself.

And that's why you better register na for the Elite Freelance Summit, which is just a few minutes away, kaya baka makakahabol ka pa!

And yes, it's for FREE!

Oh, and to make the most out of the event nga pala:

1. Get ready to learn a LOT. Come with notebook and pen to take down notes!
2. Prepare your dinner, kasi when Coach Maj starts teaching, he really goes all out, baka abutin kayo ng midnight haha!

3. Paalam muna sa kids and family na you'll want to focus for the next few hours. Kasi this is going to be life changing.
4. Get ready na hindi makatulog sa excitement once you discover what's possible!

Now the summit will start at exactly 8pm, but you can go in as early as now at this link below if you want to join the ZOOM room where mas magiging active ang chat...

New People's Army (CPP-NPA), ug wala nay kapasidad nga magsugod og kasamok.

As far as  Bohol security is concerned, Bohol is almost insurgency free, butyag ni Maj Torino didto sa media forum.

'Drug-cleared' dili mapapas bisag naay nadakpan didto
By Rey Anthony Chiu

(RAHC/PIA-7/Bohol)

Bohol Dist II himoo'ng hub
Sa Industrial development
By Rey Anthony Chiu

Other barangays with approved SBDP funding include Candavid, while Katipunan, Langtad and Mantolongon, San Roque and Ubojan of Sagbayan have also approved projects.

San Vicente, Trinidad, Lomangog and Maubo of Ubay as well as Omjon of Valencia are also having projects approved for the government funding for peace and internal security.

The projects were earlier identified by the barangays through their respective Dagyawan people's consultative assemblies, which the DILG facilitated, based on their identified barangay development plans.

The DILG then endorsed these identified projects to the National Task Force on Ending Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-ELCAC), which approves it for national government funding.

While these projects were identified for funding, the DILG assists LGUs in the compliance of the documentary requirements, lending their focal persons to subject LGUs and barangays to help in the preparation of the technical documents for the funding approval, explains PD Gonzales.

This entailed countless face to face and online engagements, which we had to do, because this would also mean much to the barangays development, Gonzales said.

Over-all, like Negros Oriental, Bohol scoured a total of 44 projects in the 2022 SBDP which the DILG facilitated from the P5.624 billion appropriations from the General Appropriations Act for fiscal year 2022.

The fund, placed under the Local Government Support Fund would be directly released to implementing local government units, Gonzales said. (RAHC/PIA-7/Bohol)

OPENING BARANGAYS UP. DILG Bohol provincial Director Jerome Gonzales bared at the PPOC that funds of about P4M per barangay will soon be downloaded to implementing local governments which have been identified as conflict areas. The funds form part of the FY 2022 GAA, as approved for NTF ELCAC pinned areas. (RAHC/PIA-7/Bohol)

PEOPLE'S CONSULTATIONS. Through Dagyawan sa Barangays, the DILG is able to evoke to the communities their development plans which should help them solve their problems. These are then endorsed for funding under the NTF ELCAC, which is now avout to be released to conflict-affected BLGUs. (rahc/PIA-7/Bohol)

Talk of the Town / Loay Bohol's Balay Tinabangay
October 08, 2022, 02:23:54 AM
FEATURE: Loay's Balay Tinabangay:
Giving homes, one at a time

No one is so poor to have nothing to give.

A fifth local government unit in Bohol may not have enough resources to start off a key social service to its indigents. But armed with good credibility, fiscal management and transparency, it has hammered and nailed 23 new houses to its residents, and their 'parked' pooled resource can finance up to six more houses.

"Local Government Unit of Loay has only to appropriate not less than P15,000 per house, and the rest is given by the private sector in forms of donations and free services," sums up Loay Mayor and lawyer Hilario Ayuban, while explaining the town's social service centerpiece in 'Balay Tinabangay.'

While there Congresswoman Alexie Tutor of the same District is also into giving out 'Libreng Pabalay,' to her constituents using her own personal money, Mayor Ayuban admitted personally he has no money and even the LGU does not have the resources to bring out the same service.

It accordingly started in 2020, when there was a family which came to his office for help. To that, he said the LGU can only help as long as the family stays in a house.

The poor family disclosed: they did not even have a house.

The mayor then instructed the town social welfare and development officer to go, survey the family's real situation and find out how the LGU can help.

Since then, the town came up with a concept of Balay Tinabangay and presented this to the people, their response was enormous, the mayor said.

"Because this is Balay Tinabangay, we need to engage the private sector, in fact the bulk of the funds would come from the private sector," the lawyer mayor compared his town's program with that of his idolized congresswoman.

Pooling in resources and putting up a common understanding of the responsibilities of parties, the LGU agreed that the family beneficiary would source out the lumber, or the host barangay can help in securing such, and even the neighbors would be the one's preparing the refreshments for the carpenters and volunteers.

The vision for Balay Tinabangay is for the beneficiary to share his counterpart, and while everyone helps, the LGU would be supervising the project construction, he pressed.

"We were able to build that first house and came to know that there indeed are still a lot more families who would need a decent house," the mayor shared.

A town on the southern coast of Bohol and that where the flooding Loboc river empties out to sea, Loay has seen a lot of natural disasters that the past storm has left many houses damaged,  forcing families to stay in heavily patched crumbling structures if only to keep them dry during the rains.

Municipal Social Welfare and Development Officer Maricel Violago, who leads a team of validators, said in the program, they ask barangay chairmen to submit five possible beneficiaries, poorest of the poor from the barangays.

This, they validate and compare them with the list from other barangays and pick for the next month's beneficiary, which comes out in direst need of the house.

The aim is to give out one house every month, and we have given 23 already, the mayor said.

Conceptualized when the building materials were still a lot cheaper, Balay Tiabangay's P100K house is now coating P120K, but still, people are giving, the mayor proudly shared.
Balay Tinabangay builds a small house with a two rooms, a small living and dining room provision, all made from coco lumber or wood and with bamboo slip-weave walls and galvanized iron sheets.

About 90% of the house would come from donations, sometimes from wealthy families, or at times, savings from students, even poor families sharing their little surplus. Everything is a gift, explains a volunteer.

Everything is duly accounted and is available for anyone who wants to see, donations, house progress reports are even posted in the town web page, another volunteer pointed out as she scanned and showed the writer the One Loay page in her mobile phone.

In a place where allegations of politicians playing favorites in the past abound, Loay has just shown that a politics based on pure service is in fact, good politics.

"It is a tough job, but then, when you are doing it to help, it is really worth the trouble," Violago said.

That incidentally would also fit the entre Balay Tinabangay Team, giving people their home, one at a time. (RAHC/PIA_7/Bohol)

ROOF OVER THEIR HEADS. Taking the bible literally, a roof for one's heads may seem to appear like this. This however is a house in Loay, ruined by Odette and the family is now forced to live under what remains of the house. This has forced Loay under Mayor Hilario Ayuban to conceptualize Balay Tinabangay. (PIABohol/LGU Loay)

EVERYONE PITCHES IN. Balay Tinabangay thrives on the help the community can give that even the neighbors bring in food and snacks to the volunteers to keep up with the schedule for the day. Here, mayor Ayuban takes a young coconut meat, as snacks for the volunteers and carpenters. (PIAbohol/LGU Loay)

BALAT TINABANGAY ODETTE EDITION. A house with piled hollow blocks as base for the walls and amakan and coco lumber, would only need a little bit of plywood double walling to transform it into a classic tropical native hut for the indigent families of Loay. (RAHC/PIA-7/Bohol)

BRING OUT THE CULTURE. Even local customs in house transfer is practiced here as volunteeready sweet, sticky food during a turnover to assure longevity to the house and prosperity to its owners (RAHC/PIA-7/Bohol)

WE'RE A FAMILY. Volunteers and neighbors of the balay tinabangay pose with torn parish Priest and mayor Ayuban during a house turn-over. Using the officials' credibility, Loay has since raised funds for its social services in housing and has given out 23 new houses, while another funds for 6 houses is all in, says mayor Ayuban. Coal dominates country's generation mix - BOHECO

TAGBILARAN CITY, Bohol, Oct 7 (PIA) – While Boholanos were made to believe that most of its power supply came from the clean energy source of the 700 megawatt Tongonan geothermal power plant in Leyte, Bohol's leading power distribution cooperative negates it.

In its official statement posted in its facebook page October 6, Bohol Electric Cooperative I (Boheco 1) said the country in fact is using most of its power requirements from coal-generated power plants.

Would this also mean that Bohol, which gets its supply from a common pool of electric generation channeled through the Visayas Grid, could be getting roughly the same power mix.

"Coal is dominating the power generation mix, and as for Boheco 1, 87.57% of its generation mix comes from coal-generated power plants," Boheco 1 stated.

With hardly much buzz, BIBA shares 254 'kiwot colonies'

TAGBILARAN CITY, Bohol, Oct 7 (PIA) –Working without much of a buzz, Bohol Island Bee-managers Association (BIBA), has already put up an aggregate of 254 stingless bee colonies all over Bohol, barely five months from its official inception.

Already an acknowledged organization of stingless-bee (kiwot) keepers intent on bringing out the best in bee culture in their move towards a sustainable organic farming in Bohol, BIBA have been mum about doubling their income potential simply by just keeping bee colonies and tending to their farms at the same time.

Officially organized last June 17, 2017, BIBA believes that even if they count on the increased harvest due to the added natural pollination by the harmless stingless bees, food production would be up by 55% to 85%, cites BIBA President Jomer Balag of Jolits EcoFarm in Cambacay Batuan.

Epifanio Loyola Jr., the President of the country's network of bee managers foundation incorporated (BEENET), in a separate interview corroborated Balag's claim, citing his coconut farm's increased harvest measured up to 85%, nearly double the yield in the previous years before picking up bee-keeping in his farm.

Jao island's Odette story
Off to Korea dance fest

TAGBILARAN CITY, Bohol, Oct 7 (PIA) –By way of total theater, a team of Boholano artists in the performing arts would be telling the story of a village whose people's simple dreams were washed away by the overpowering waves brought by super-typhoon Odette in the 2022 Gyeryongsan Mountain International Dance Festival in Korea.

This year's Bohol participation in the Gyeryongsan Mountain International Dance Festival is Bohol's second appearance in the mountain shrine venue.

In 2019, Bohol sent to the festival, Teatro Bol-anon's "Dagon sa Hoyohoy," (Talisman of the breeze) via a 25-man drama theater company and technical support. This was Bohol's participation in to South Korea-Philippines 70th year of international relations.

This year, through Kasing Sining, the team of actors and technical staff would be doing intricately choreographed dance movements, engaging original music composition, original musical score, and light show.

OIC of the Office of the Press Secretary

Veteran journalist and lawyer Atty. Cheloy Velicaria-Garafil resigned as the chief of the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) to become the temporary head of the Office of the Press Secretary (OPS).

Garafil also worked for the Dept. of Justice and was the media chief for then-House Speaker Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. She also worked with Marcos during the vice presidential campaign.

Pres. Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said he will be announcing his pick for the next press secretary early next week. Trixie Cruz-Angeles resigned on Tuesday, citing health reasons. She was bypassed by the Commission on Appointments last week and was not able to secure a fresh nomination from the president.

Marcos said he is looking for a media practitioner for the post. Three former media men--former press secretary Mike Toledo, Transport Usec. Cesar Chavez, and former Cavite Rep. Gilbert Remulla--are also reportedly being eyed for the post.

"Northern Samar strengthens partnership with Unicef
By Ailene N. Diaz

Catarman, Northern Samar (1 December 2005) -- The children of Northern Samar will continue to benefit from the UNICEF's Country Program for Children. According to Neciforo Rubenecia Jr., acting provincial planning and development coordinator, the UNICEF has decided to implement the Sixth Country Program for Children (CPC VI) in the province. This is a continuation of the Fifth Country Program for Children (CPC V) being implemented by UNICEF in selected provinces nationwide.

Rubenecia stressed that the decision to continue the program was based on the good performance of the province in terms of targets met. This was largely due to the guidance and support of Governor Raul A. Daza and the cooperation of partner agencies involved in the implementation of the program.

The Country Program for Children gives priority to children in the depressed areas of the province.

Projects being implemented are along the areas of advocacy, protection of children in armed conflicts, health, water and sanitation, education, local governance and information.

The Country Program for Children also focuses on the rights of the children. The provincial government of Northern Samar with the provincial planning and development office as CPC VI secretariat monitors the implementation of the projects being handled by different institutions, organizations and agencies in the province.

These partner agencies are the different Local Government Units, government agencies like the Department of Health, University of Eastern Philippines, Department of Education, Northern Samar, Northern Samar Provincial Health Office and some non-government organizations operating in the province. By Teresita Cardenas

Catarman, Northern Samar (1 December 2005) -- A wide array of processed foods fortified with essential micronutrients under the Sangkap Pinoy Seal Program are now available in supermarkets, convenience stores or even in the neighborhood retail stores.

According to Evelyn Barrel, nutrition officer of the Provincial Nutrition Office, the Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI), the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) has developed some high calorie-protein snack foods like squash chips, snack crunchies made from a mixture of rice flour, skim milk powder and beef blood powder and rice-mango crunchies fortified with Vitamin A, thiamin, riboflavin and niacin for the children.

The Food and Nutrition Research Institute has also experimented with the mongo flour supplement for pan de sal, a traditional bun of the Filipino to improve nutritional quality of baked products. Among the more popular fortified food products are noodles, chippy, cheese curls, and juice drinks as nutritious snack foods to replace junk food.

Some of the listed Sangkap Pinoy Seal Products are Noodles, Dolphin Plus Vermicelli, Excellent Instant Mami, Golden Instant Noodles, Lucky Me Instant MAmi, Maggi Rich Mami, Saucy-Mi, Ho-Mi Canton, Ho-Mi Instant Mami, Nooda Crunch, Payless Instant Mami.

Philippine Archive / Pinoy SEA Games Athletes
October 07, 2022, 09:06:26 AM
"Commentary: Salute to Pinoy SEA Games athletes and OFWs
By Renee F. de Guzman

San Fernando City, La Union (1 December 2005) -- The sterling performance of the Filipino athletes in the 23rd SEA Games and the continues performance of the peso against the dollar are very welcome respite, after the serious political crisis and negative news about the country that pervaded since July.

The Filipino athletes who are mostly virtually unknown are continuously harvesting medals for the country amidst the cheerings of many Filipinos who go out of their way to watch the athletic events and lend their moral support. Our athletes are determined to be the champion in the SEA Games and give honor to the Philippines, as they continue to project that they are epitome of resilience, discipline, excellence and sportsmanship.

On the other hand, the overseas Filipino contract workers (OFWs) who are the unsung heroes of the country continue to work hard abroad and pour in heavy dollar remittances which helped propped up the peso to its highest since March this year that catapulted the peso to be the best performing currency in Asia against the dollar.

Thanks to the Filipino contingents in the 23rd SEA Games and to the OFWs for giving positive outlook for the Philippines and making it consequential in the ASIA Map, reverting the gloom and doom scenario the enemies of the Arroyo administration has been painting. For as GMA's foes continue to employ all sorts of antics to topple her, they are in the process destroying the whole nation. It feels good that for once in a long while, the Filipino is welcomed by a good news as he wakes up in the morning.

As we salute our athletes and OFWs, we also hope that our political leaders both in the opposition and administration will finally put a stop on their dirty political bickerings and instead direct their energies in giving honor, glory and fame to the Philippines emulating.

Leyte NGO conducts training for CARP beneficiaries
By Rebecca G. Cadavos

Maasin City (1 December 2005) -- There were at least twenty-two new Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program (CARP) beneficiaries who attended the Health Care Program and Leadership Training held recently at Hidden Valley, Liloan, Southern Leyte.

According to Department of Agrarian Reform Information Officer Angeli Kaindoy of Sogod, Southern Leyte, the training was conducted by the Holy Peace Foundation based in Paranaque City , a Non-Government Organization that assisted DAR in educating CARP beneficiaries and indigenous people regarding health care and other leadership programs.

It was also reported that the two-day training led by Sr. Eva Maamo, one of the Board of Directors of the Holy Peace Foundation was also attended by the beneficiaries from the provinces of Bohol and Leyte.

Kaindoy further quoted DAR Development Facilitator Victoria Ligtas that the training gave the beneficiaries more support in order to improve their lives in addition to the training they had attended at the Paranaque City Holy Peace Foundation Hospital last January 2005.

Meanwhile, another related training at Brgy. Pinamudlan, San Francisco, Southern Leyte was held recently, still on Health Care and Livelihood Program.

The one-day training was attended by (47) CARP beneficiaries which was led by Sr. Eva Maamo of the Holy Peace Foundation.

A follow-up home visitation was conducted by the foundation after the (2) trainings to know whether the beneficiaries have applied what they had learned from the said training. (PIA-So. Leyte) [top]

Philippine Archive / HIV AIDS epidemic across Asia
October 07, 2022, 09:04:16 AM
"DOH 8 urges media to help reverse HIV epidemic
Tacloban City (1 December 2005) -- In connection with the World Aids Day being commemorated today, the Department of Health Region 8 through Dr. Eduardo Pedrosa, head of the Information and Dissemination Bureau, urged the media and the Philippine Information Agency to help in reversing the HIV/AIDS epidemic across Asia and the Pacific including China through massive information dissemination and advocacy campaign.

Dr. Pedrosa who was guest at the Harampang at PIA today said that in the Philippines there are 1,515 aids cases reported as of June 2001. The Department of Health however, believe that there are more cases that are not reported because of varied reasons and so the actual cases may be determined by multiplying the reported cases one hundred times.

Dr. Pedrosa clarified that when we say that a patient is HIV positive, he is positive of the virus but without any manifestations yet. On the other hand, an AIDS patient already have the signs and symptoms of the disease.

Asked on the number of HIV positive cases in the Region, Dr. Pedrosa said that DOH 8 know of four reported cases. Two are prostitutes from Samar and the other two are male government employees who are still employed up to the moment. Dr. Pedrosa said that the families of these employees are not aware of the condition of the male employees.

The patients have the right to privacy which is being protected by RA 8504 or the Philippine Aids Prevention and Control Act. This means that the patient may or may not report that he is HIV positive, he may not even tell it to his wife or parents.

The problem is the HIV/AIDS patients are free to roam around and contaminate other unknowing people with the disease.

According to the report of World Health Organization, drugs and prostitution are driving the HIV/AIDS epidemic across Asia and the Pacific including China where the virus has spread to all 31 provinces and regions despite efforts to contain it."

PGMA orders investigation on alleged SEA Games rigging
MANILA (1 December 2005) -- "I am concerned over the remarks of an ally and good friend, Prime Minister Thaksin."

Thus said President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo as she directed the officials of the Southeast Asian Games to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation into the alleged rigging and submit an official report within 24 hours.

The President made the move after Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra issued remarks that the on-going 23rd SEA games were rigged in favor of the host-country.

"It is everyone's duty to be just and fair without bias towards any country or team," Mrs. Arroyo stressed.

Hence, she called on all Southeast Asian country-members for sobriety and prudence in order to treasure the solidarity and friendship among the competitors and their respective nations - as tribute to the Southeast Asian neighborhood. (PIA-MMIO)

"Poisoned politics root of pessimism in RP - Bunye
MANILA (1 December 2005) -- "Poisoned politics is the root of the ripple of pessimism in the country right now..."

This was the statement made by Press Secretary and Presidential Spokesman Ignacio Bunye in connection with Pulse Asia's lates report, saying one in every three Filipinos wants to move on to another country as some believes the Philippines is hopeless.

Despite this, Bunye made clear that the issue is already dented by the growing confidence in the economy and the brightening prospects for next year.

"The disgust of the people over the politics of personality, hatred and destabilization is evident, as they themselves witness how these pull down the economy and distract the momentum of our fight against poverty, the root of hopelessness," he said.

Meanwhile, the Secretary acknowledged the sacrifice of Filipinos seeking better opportunities abroad, for their families and the country, but pointed out that the present administration is not stopping to look for ways to keep them home by aiming at a strong economy generating well paying jobs. Philippine Laws / Pangulong Gloria Arroyo
October 07, 2022, 08:59:44 AM
"By Freddie G. Lazaro

Philippine Education / TESDA Training for PWDs
October 07, 2022, 08:58:11 AM
"TESDA to sign MOA for PWDs training and productivity center
Iloilo City (1 December 2005) -- The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) and the Association of Disabled Persons - Iloilo Multi-Purpose Cooperative (ADPI-MPC) will sign today (December 2) a memorandum of agreement for the establishment of a Training and Productivity Center for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs).

The agreement allows the ADPI-MPC the use of the extension workshop space of the IFMA-TESDA Training Center building with its existing amenities located inside the compound of TESDA Regional Office 6 at Zamora St. of this city for ten years and renewable as needed.

The ADPI-MPC is a primary cooperative of persons with disabilities that aims to provide livelihood opportunities to its members. One of its income-generating projects aside from their Canteen and Massage Center in Jaro Plaza and Micro-Finance project is a productivity center in Sta. Barbara, Iloilo.

The Productivity Center produces different assistive devices for PWDs such as prosthesis, crutches, wheelchairs and other mobility aids. It also manufactures elementary tables and chairs and secondary armchairs. The center supplies the Department of Education (DepEd) and private schools with these products.

ADPI-MPC General Manager Mario Abaygar said this generous move of TESDA is a big help to their organization since their contract with the landowner where their productivity center in Sta. Barbara is situated is about to expire. He added that what is also important is the training component that goes along with the transfer. "What we also value is the assistance that TESDA will provide to us in the technical aspect especially on how we could improve the production of our chairs", Abaygar said.

True to its mandate, TESDA which was created under Republic Act 7796 provides effective supervision, coordination and integration of technical education and skills development programs, projects and related activities which will ensure the development and utilization of the nation manpower"

Philippine Archive / OFWs from Western Visayas
October 07, 2022, 08:57:17 AM
"Iloilo City (1 December 2005) -- The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) is the top destination of overseas land-based workers in Western Visayas during the last 10 months of 2005 after it hired/rehired some 2,933 documented Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) as recorded by the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration 6 (OWWA 6).

Based on the same record, after KSA, Hongkong is the next destination of overseas workers in the region where a total of 1,266 processed their contracts for land-based employment in the said country during the same period.

Recently, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) said that Middle East is seen to remain the biggest source of employment for the OFWs in the next three years with KSA, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman, Lebanon, Israel, Libya and Jordan generating the most number of new job opportunities.

Related to this, Labor and Employment Secretary Patricia Sto. Tomas said that various marketing strategies will be pursued by the Philippine Overseas Labor Offices in the Middle East to ensure the OFWs' access to the new job opportunities that are projected to be generated in the region starting 2006 until 2008.

For the next three years, a total of 258,950 new jobs are projected by DOLE that would be generated in the Middle East. Of this number, some 173,600 new jobs will be generated in the Gulf Cooperation Countries (GCCs) of KSA, UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and Oman and another 85,350 in Non-GCC countries of Lebanon, Israel, Libya and Jordan.

In the GCCs, the most number of new jobs are expected to be generated by the sustained construction activities and expansion in the medical, tourism, retail, ICT sectors and the expansion of the exploration of oil and gas while the non-GCCs countries are projected to need more foreign household workers and caregivers."

"Iloilo City (1 December 2005) -- The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) is urged to take appropriate measure on the deteriorating standard of education in medical and allied courses.

The House Committee on Civil Service and professional Regulation made the appeal based on the CHED report which stated that the national passing percentage of medicine licensure examination rose to 75.16 percent in 1995 and dropped to an all-time low of 56.26 percent in 2003, a big difference of 18.90 percent.

Pampanga Congressman Francis Nepomuceno expressed alarm that the trend of passers is decreasing enormously: 74.65 percent in 1996; 71.04 percent in 1997; 64.92 percent in 1998; 69.15 percent, 1999; 65.03 percent, 2000; 61.04, 2001; and, 63.18 percent, 2002.

Nepomuceno also noted that graduates of medical and allied degrees have nose dived. From a high of 60,058 students graduated in 1992-1993, it decreased to 33,547 in 2002-2003, or more than 50 percent margin.

The congressman said that CHED should padlock the medical schools around the country that failed to provide quality education, because it is not fair for parents to shoulder the burden of high cost of tuition and fees.

Meanwhile, Nepomuceno said he was disappointed that rural folks have no longer access to medical care because most of rural health doctors have shifted to nursing and opted to seek greener pasture abroad."

"Upland population to be reduced
Iloilo City (1 December 2005) -- About 24 million people living in the uplands in the country are putting tremendous pressure on the forests.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) said that efforts to restore some 86,000 hectares of denuded forests within five years include the reduction of upland population.

According to a study conducted by the University of the Philippines Population Institute in 2003, Western Visayas is next to Central Visayas in having the most number of occupants, which is 2.5 million over an area of 613,529 hectares. Central Visayas' upland occupants are spread over an area of 535,919 hectares.

It is not only these two which are on top of the list of reduction in upland population. The DENR said that there are additional 13 upland regions included in the effort.

According to the UPPI, studies show that population in the uplands would double in 30 years if present trends in upland population growth remain, coupled by continuous lowland-to-upland migration at an annual average growth rate of 2.8 percent.

The effort to reduce population in the uplands is part of the population management program which the government undertakes with NEDA funded by Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) under the Overseas Development Assistance (ODA). (PIA 6)

Philippine Archive / Survey on Philippine Migration
October 07, 2022, 08:53:53 AM
"Baguio City (1 December 2005) -- On the latest Pulse Asia Survey saying that one in every three Filipinos wants to move to another country and almost one quarter believes the Philippines is hopeless, poisoned politics is the root of the ripple of pessimism in the country right now, but this is being dented by growing confidence in the economy and the brightening prospects for next year.

The disgust of the people over the politics of personality, hatred and destabilization is evident, as they themselves witness how these pull down the economy and distract the momentum of our fight against abject poverty, the root of hopelessness.

Government acknowledges the sacrifice of Filipinos seeking better opportunities abroad, for their families and for the country, but it is not stopping to look for ways to keep them home by aiming at a strong economy generating well paying jobs.

Meanwhile, President Arroyo has expressed concern over the remarks of "an ally and good friend," Prime Minister Thaksin. She has directed the officials of the games to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation into the matter and submit an official report within 24 hours.

The leadership and officials of the games must see to it that the charge is promptly and thoroughly investigated, and immediately put out the results of the probe before the whole atmosphere turns sour. It is everyone's duty to be just and fair without bias towards any country or team. Sobriety and prudence are called for. We must treasure the solidarity and friendship among the competitors and their respective nations-as a tribute to the Southeast Asian neighborhood to which we all belong.

At the same time, we must not let this dampener sink the spirits of our athletes and dilute national pride. We must keep a high moral ground so that national pride in our victories will have weight and meaning. (PIA)

Philippine Archive / Cheating in SEA Games?
October 07, 2022, 08:52:42 AM
by Marivic Alcober

Tacloban City (1 December 2005) -- Both the administration and opposition leaders reacted negatively to the accusations thrown by Thailand through its Prime Minister Shinawatra over alleged cheating on the on-going 23rd Southeast Asian Games. Both parties were quick to defend that when Philippine athletes play in any of the events, the referees and other officials who decide on the results of the games always come from other countries to make sure that fairness and sobriety is observed.

Other Filipinos also reacted that there are so many factors which make our athletes more inspired to be victorious in their events. The fact alone that they are on their native land and majority of the cheering audience are friends and kins makes more inspired, plus the fact that they are more comfortable and used to our climate compared to when they play in other countries.

However, in spite of the remarks of the Thai Prime Minister, the Philippine athletes still perspires to fight for their gold because deep in their hearts they believe they deserve the medal they have sweated and aspired for.

Perhaps this is the time when all Filipinos should unite and put behind previous mud slinging and instead work as one to uphold our national dignity. (PIA)

Philippine Archive / Garci Wiretapping
October 07, 2022, 08:51:38 AM
"By Bong Pedalino

Tacloban City (1 December 2005) -- The dishonored former Commission on Elections (Comelec) Commissioner of "Hello, Garci" fame was back in the news, reportedly to re-claim his honor. Then, so what? The Filipino is tired of all the noise caused by the Garci wiretap tale.

It may be a blessing in disguise that his re-appearance in public view coincided with the conduct of the 23rd Southeast Asian Games. The Pinoy viewers, it turned out, watched the games rather than listen to the pronouncements of our honorable politicians who smelled blood with Garci lurking around.

That Team Philippines continued to haul gold daily and showed their finest best in the games was a clear indication that Garci's resurrection has not spoiled our athletes' quest for glory.

Our Politikos should read the writings on the wall: Garci is no longer a crowd-drawing magnet he used to be.

Southern Leyte

In Southern Leyte province, for example, the people are more concerned on businessmen asking 10% more on the price of goods bought if an official receipt (OR) is demanded supposedly because of the expanded value-added tax (EVAT). It was obvious consumers cannot care less about Garci, but to pay something more so an OR can be issued is much more valuable.

Let me get this straight before I dwell on the EVAT. With Garci's coming out in the open we do hope the political turmoil that started six months ago can be put to a stop, finally. I do hope Garci can enlighten the legislators, and the public at large, which has suspended judgment until all the cards are laid down, faces up.

The sooner we say, in the end, "The Garci saga, bow" (complete with drums rolling, trumpets in rising-falling crescendo in the background as the curtains fall), the better for the country -- and for our improving economy.

On EVAT

Now, back to the EVAT. Noemi Abiera Pizon, the Revenue District Officer in Southern Leyte province, clarified that the tag price of the goods already contained the tax. So it is not right for businessmen to charge 10% more to the unit price of goods if customers insist to have an official receipt, she said. Repeat, it is not RIGHT, in bold, capital letters.

Having said that, Pizon warned that businessmen who continue the wayward practice are guilty of OVERPRICING. (Again, in bold, capital letters for emphasis.) And the penalty for this one, mind you, is no less than P 10,000.00 as a start.

Official receipts

Asking an OR every time you buy something or pay for a service rendered is not just a matter of privilege. It is a basic right of customers. The OR is a material proof if ever an item is returned due to factory defect. The OR is a document to support a consumer's complaint, like being shortchanged. And the OR is a sure sign that the EVAT can be collected by the government.

Thus, asking a receipt is not just a right, after all. It is also a duty, an obligation. (PIA) [top]"

Philippine Provinces / Maasin City Police Station
October 07, 2022, 08:49:56 AM
By Bong Pedalino

MAASIN CITY (1 December 2005) -- A new Police Station building will soon be added to the growing structures changing the landscape of this city.

No less than the new Police Regional Director, Chief Supt. Eliseo De La Paz, revealed in an ambush interview during a surprise visit here recently that construction of the new Police office shall begin anytime this month, December.

The first amount intended for the project had, in fact, been already released, De La Paz added.

Newly-installed City Chief of Police, Supt. Pepito Generan filled in some details where his Regional Boss failed to mention.

In a radio program "Aksyon, Solusyon, Inisyatibo" over DYDM on Thursday, December 1, Generan said the new building will be a two-story structure located in a 240 square meter lot beside the Fire Department and the new Integrated Terminal building at the reclamation area.

The amount of P1 million had been readied to start the construction work for the project, Generan said, adding that the entire appropriation could be anything between P 5 Million to P 7 Million.

In June this year Chief PNP Director-General Arturo Lomibao toured the province and announced that three Police Stations -- Maasin, Padre Burgos, and Libagon -- stand to get allocations for a separate building.

Generan hinted at similar developments with Padre Burgos and Libagon Police Stations.

Maasin Police Station has been housed in the ground floor of the old municipal building ever since the historic past and desperately needed a new face lift now that the town has been changed into a city. (PIA-Southern Leyte)"

"September imports grow 7.8% as consumer goods continue to surge
Quezon City (1 December 2005) -- Merchandise import payments in September increased by 7.8 percent to $4.1 billion as purchases of all major groups except raw materials and intermediate goods increased, according to National Economic Development Authority.

Socioeconomic Planning Secretary Augusto Santos said capital imports surged by 10.5 percent in September. Capital build-up was specifically recorded in aircraft, ships and boats (527.5%), power generating and specialized machines (26.1%) and telecommunication equipment and electrical machinery (9.2%).

The NEDA Chief also said that demand for consumer goods remained upbeat, rising 9.1 percent compared with the same period last year. He noted that inward shipments of fish and fish preparations (163.2%), importation of rice (63.3%), and passenger cars and motorized cycles (44.9%) cushioned the decline in dairy products (-36.9%) and other food and live animals (-6.4%).

Raw materials and intermediate goods were the only group that declined by 12.9 percent. Materials and accessories for the manufacture of electronic equipment declined by 32.2 per cent, compensating for the rise in imports of manufactured goods.

The United States remains the country's primary source of imports in September comprising 18.2 percent of the market followed by Japan and Singapore with 15.1 and 8.2 percent respectively. (Beat The Odds Infobits"

Business and Economy / BIMP-EAGA

"BIMP-EAGA: Pitching for economic growth through tourism
Quezon City (1 December 2005) -- Participating for the first time as one region in an international trade fair, the EAST ASEAN Growth Area (EAGA) has made its mark as it highlights tourism as a major vehicle to economic growth during the China-ASEAN Expo(CAEXPO) held in Nanning,China recently.

The EAGA, which is composed of countries Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines (BIMP), featured during the four-day fair the region's diverse but united culture, its many exciting adventures and natural attractions.

Conceptualized in 1994, the BIMP-EAGA was intended to boost trade, tourism, and investment within the region. It comprises the areas of Mindanao and Palawan in the Philippines; the entire sultanate of Brunei Darussalam; 10 provinces in the Indonesian islands of Kalamantan, Sulawesi, Maluku, and the Irian Jaya; and Sabah, Sarawak, and Labuan in Malaysia.

To assure the smooth movement of tourists within the area, EAGA's recent undertakings involve increasing the flight frequencies to and from the different destinations within the region. Currently, South Phoenix caters to passengers flying the Zamboanga-Sandakan route and vice-versa. By sea, M.V. Wissam Express and Alesson navigate the same route. Merpati carrier, carrier on the other hand, services the Davao-Sandakan-Davao route.

The CAEXPO is an annual event held since 2004 and was conceptualized in the goal of providing business communities not just from Asia but all over the world, a tremendous avenue for regional economic and trade collaboration. It aims to promote the building of China-ASEAN Free Trade Area which is envisioned to yield mutual benefits and shared success among its members. (Beat The Odds Infobits)"

Business and Economy / Landbank Priority Sectors
October 07, 2022, 08:44:06 AM
"Quezon City (1 December 2005) -- The Land Bank of the Philippines' total loans to its priority sectors reached P78.5 Billion as of September 2005. This represents 67 percent of the Bank's P118billion total loan portfolio, higher by P3.2 billion or six percent compared to the 61 percent share in September last year.

Land Bank acting President and CEO Gilda E. Pico is confident that the Bank's total loans to its priority sectors will exceed the end-2005 target of 65 percent. "This reflects Land Bank's intensified support for the key sectors that spur countryside economic growth", she said.

Land Bank's priority sectors include the small farmers and fisherfolk, SMEs and microenterprises, agri-infrastructure and environment-related projects. SMEs and micro-enterprises got the biggest share of P18 billion, followed by small farmers and fisherfolk with P17.1 billion. Share of loans for agri-infrastructure projects to LGUs increased to P12.9 billion from P11 billion last year, while share of loans for agri-related projects of government-owned and controlled corporations reached P9.9 billion. Meanwhile, loans for agri-business and environment-related projects reached P16.7 billion and P1.7 billion, respectively.

Finance Secretary and Land Bank Chairman Gary B. Teves lauded Land Bank's increased lending to its priority sectors and other key players in countryside development. Teves said, "By focusing on these sectors, Land Bank aims to promote job generation, entrepreneurship and poverty alleviation especially in the rural areas as outlined in the 10-point agenda of the Arroyo government. "Quezon City (1 December 2005) -- The Department of Tourism (DOT) further intensified its campaigns in China with its added tourist attractions in line for next year. China is the Philippines' fastest-growing market, with an average increase hitting almost 200 percent over recent months In the latest arrivals statistics, it has posted a growth rate of 186.4% for the month of September 2005 as compared to same period last year.

China has consistently recorded a growth rate of almost ten times than its usual average and six times faster than any of Philippines' other source markets.

Soon to be included in the list of tourist destinations advertised to Chinese travelers are Subic, Davao, and the New Manila with its new upbeat look.

In addition to putting up marketing offices in two of China's key cities Beijing and Shanghai; familiarization trips for tour operators and the media; and extensive broadcast and print ads, the Philippines has participated in numerous travel fair, wherein diving and golf; wellness and spa; and incentive travel and tourism-related investments were showcased and have recorded an overwhelming response from the Chinese.

Just before the year draws to a close, the DOT will again embark on another venture as they join the 7th China International Travel Mart (CITM) 2005 at the Kunming International Convention and Exhibition Center.

CITM 2005 is deemed to be yet another potent platform that will help promote the islands as premier destination. With almost tens of thousands of visitors, over 1,500 high-quality buyers, and more than 60 countries from all over the world participating, new business opportunities for everyone is indeed a huge possibility. Last week, Chairman of Temasek Trust, Ms Ho Ching, opened #PAS2022 stressing that action to help the planet, peace, people and progress should be at the forefront of minds across Asia and the world.

The Philanthropy Asia Summit aids these 4 Ps through connecting people #ToDoGoodWell. By using the 4 Ps to guide collective approaches to climate action, inclusive education, and resilient healthcare, #PAS2022 aims to make lasting change to the lives of those across Asia.

BSP Statement on the Medium-Term Inflation Path

The September 2022 inflation outturn of 6.9 percent is within the BSP's forecast range of 6.6 to 7.4 percent, consistent with the BSP's assessment of inflation remaining above target over the near term as price pressures broaden and signs of further adverse second-round effects emerge.

Upside risks continue to dominate the inflation outlook in the near term. Price pressures could come from the potential impact of higher global non-oil prices, pending petitions for further transport fare hikes, the impact of weather disturbances on prices of food items, as well as the sharp increase in the price of sugar. Meanwhile, the impact of a weaker-than-expected global economic recovery continues to be the main downside risk to the outlook. Nevertheless, inflation risks are seen to be broadly balanced in the medium-term as global commodity prices ease going forward.

The BSP's recent policy actions are intended to bring inflation and inflation expectations back to the target to ensure the balanced and sustainable growth of the economy in the medium term. The BSP is prepared to take further policy actions to bring inflation toward a target-consistent path over the medium term, consistent with its primary objective to promote price stability. The BSP also continues to urge timely implementation of non-monetary government interventions to mitigate the impact of persistent supply-side pressures on commodity prices. The BSP will continue to carefully monitor and assess pertinent economic developments that could affect the price dynamics and growth prospects of the country.

News Negros Oriental: Roel Degamo takes his oath before President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. as the Governor of Negros Oriental this afternoon, Oct. 5, 2022, at the Malacañang Palace in Manila.

He was sworn in together with NTF-ELCAC Executive Director Emmanuel Buenaflor, along with cameramen and photojournalists covering the Palace.

Degamo earlier released a video saying he issued an order that all affairs and transactions of the governor's office must be coursed through him.

But Gov. Pryde Henry Teves maintained that only a Supreme Court decision or a DILG order nullifying his assumption and installation can make him vacate his seat as the province's chief executive. Teves also held a press conference today outlining plans for the upcoming Buglasan this October.

BSP IDENTIFIES LEGISLATIVE PRIORITIES FOR THE 19TH CONGRESS

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) has outlined its legislative agenda for the 19th Congress to further promote the stability and ensure soundness of the Philippine banking and payment systems.

The BSP supports reforms espoused under the Bank Deposits Secrecy Bill, the proposed Financial Accounts Regulation Act (FARA), SIM Card Registration Bill, and the Digital Payments Bill.

The Bank Deposits Secrecy Bill is the BSP's priority legislative measure in the 19th Congress. Proposed amendments to the Bank Deposits Secrecy law aim to strengthen the banking system's capacity to effectively combat tax evasion, money laundering, and other financial crimes. In the 18th Congress, the BSP supported the passage of House Bill No. 8991, which sought to allow for a thorough examination of bank accounts with suspicious transactions.

The proposed FARA, meanwhile, aims to strengthen consumer protection and impose higher penalties for financial cybercrimes. The proposed law seeks to regulate the use of bank accounts and e-wallets, and prevent their use for criminal activities.

The BSP also supports the SIM Card Registration Bill which intends to deter the proliferation of SIM card-aided crimes, such as bank fraud and text scams.

Finally, as a long-standing advocate for the digitalization of financial transactions and financial inclusion, the BSP pushes for the passage of the Digital Payments Bill, which fosters the adoption of safe, affordable, and efficient digital payments in financial transactions with the government.

In the 18th Congress, BSP's support led to the passage of legislative measures aimed to intensify consumer protection and enhance the delivery of and access to financial products and services. These measures include the Agriculture, Fisheries and Rural Development Financing Enhancement Act of 2022, the Financial Products and Services Consumer Protection Act, amendments to the Philippine Deposit Insurance Corporation charter, and the Financial Institutions Strategic Transfer Act.

In the same manner, "the BSP will work with the 19th Congress on the passage of priority bills that are expected to boost public trust and confidence in the country's financial and payment systems," said BSP Governor Felipe M. Medalla.

Philippine Business News / Digital PERA

DIGITAL PERA CONTRIBUTORS AND FUNDS

JUMP TWO YEARS AFTER LAUNCH

The number of Personal Equity and Retirement Account (PERA) contributors almost tripled two years after the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) launched the Digital PERA on 08 September 2020. PERA contributors increased to 4,892 on September 08 this year, from the 1,684 recorded two years prior.

The number of PERA investors rose along with total PERA funds, as total PERA contributions increased by 106 percent to  PHP 289.82 million as of 08 September 2022 from PHP 140.76 million recorded during the same period in 2020.

Contributions from Filipino employees represented 67.43 percent of said PERA contributions or PHP 195.42 million. The remainder of the contributions came from overseas Filipino workers and self-employed individuals.

The Digital PERA is an online one-stop shop where investors can conveniently open an account, browse various PERA products, monitor their PERA accounts, and settle transactions via InstaPay and PESONet.

Created under Republic Act No. 9505, PERA is a voluntary retirement savings program that supplements state-based pension plans (i.e., from Social Security System and Government Service Insurance System), and employer-sponsored retirement plans.  The BSP introduced PERA in 2016 with support from the financial industry.

The BSP encourages Filipinos to take full advantage of the benefits offered under PERA, including the exemption of PERA earnings from taxes on final withholding, capital gains, and regular income.

PERA contributors are also entitled to a five percent tax credit on contributions for the year that can be used to pay national income tax liabilities. Moreover, qualified PERA withdrawals are not subject to taxes.

"We are very pleased with the resumption of the use of Ormoc City speed radar gun to ensure the safety of motorists and the pedestrians in our roads. The LTO, TEAM and PNP will make sure to implement this program properly and sustainably." matod ni Gomez
