Poems and Poets / When a man knows God
June 16, 2010, 12:38:20 PM
"When a man knows God, he is free: his sorrows have an end,
and  birth and death are no more. When in inner union he is
beyond the  world of the body, then the third world, the world
of the Spirit,  is found, where the power of the All is, and man
has all: for he is  one with the ONE."

Robert, i wish i could talk to you right now.
You told me once that if i ever needed someone to talk to, cry on, you said for me to always come to you.
Robert, i miss you so much because you were my close confidant in the personal matters that i had gone through.
And there are times my dearest friend and brother, that i wish i could just get your personal opinion on.
Just the way it was.

So, here i am, in this situation where i am telling you despite you never returning a word.
I talked to Ally couple of months ago, it seems that she's doing good now. A veterinary student now, and doing well.
You two were always a cute couple. She misses you, Robbo. I can tell.

I hope you dont mind if i drop by from time to time,
to post some thoughts.

Al,

If you tell me its been 3 years since we last talked, i would not be able to believe it, but the truth stands and it really has been almost three years. Three years ago, I was working on my junior seminar for limnology and you talked about that particular play you were taking part in. Oh i forget the name now. Truth be told, i never did go to that play that you were taking part of. Forgive me, Robert.

My good dear friend, I continue to pray for you and remember your memory. Do watch over me from time to time. I promise, one of these days, I'll visit your grave and lay a bouquet of red roses for you.

I miss you, Robbo.  :'(

Ever so much,
Al

With a 40 inch sword?

I wonder if he wore chainmail armor and plates as well,
where would he go with such brass, to dance , to sleep , rounds and shell.

Give back your equipment, your boots, your arsenal,

Yes indeed, and his death should not be attributed to the wife, rather, medical care. He is 64 years old and who knows what kind of medical condition he had besides post traumatic stress disorder. If he knew his medical condition, he should have known better than going to the Philippines if he knew that his medication would be limited or hampered in anyway.

Additionally, what is the importance of noting how many foreigners died in Bohol? Is this really necessary? This is a private matter.

It would be like people here in New Jersey printing in the news how many Israelis, Germans, French, British, Russian etc citizens that die while on their stay in our state. This should be a private matter, and not divulged unto the public to be preyed upon. For privacy's sake.

Love of Enemies

Matthew 5:43-48
[Jesus said to his disciples,] 43“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ 44But I say to you, love your enemies, and pray for those who persecute you, 45that you may be children of your heavenly Father, for he makes his sun rise on the bad and the good, and causes rain to fall on the just and the unjust. 46For if you love those who love you, what recompense will you have? Do not the tax collectors do the same? 47And if you greet your brothers only, what is unusual about that? Do not the pagans do the same? 48So be perfect, just as your heavenly Father is perfect.”

GOD MAKES HIS SUN RISE: Looking at creation with mystical eyes, the apostle Paul writes that God is made evident in the works of his hands: “Ever since the creation of the world, his invisible attributes of eternal power and divinity have been able to be understood and perceived in what he has made” (Rom 1:20). In the Old Testament, the psalmist marvels at the awesomeness of God’s creation which reflects on the dignity of man: “When I see your heavens, the work of your fingers… what are humans that you are mindful of them, mere mortals that you care for them?” (Ps 8:4-5). For Jesus, too, and for the people of his time, nature is not a self-enclosed world. Nature, which obeys the divine will, reflects the desire and action of God.
The rising of the sun and the falling of the rain which people take for granted are, for Jesus, signs of God’s providence. The fact that they benefit all, irrespective of people’s conduct, points out that God cares equally for the righteous and the wicked.
Jesus says that as children of the heavenly Father, we should imitate his ways, especially in showing love and mercy without making any distinction. Human beings tend to repay goodness by another good act. Even sinners and those who do not know God do this. Jesus’ disciples should go beyond natural goodness and extend their love even to the undeserving. They must be guided by only one consideration: the Father himself is prodigal with his love and mercy.

The Story of Rustico Lucino "Papa Titing"

by: Albrando Lorenzo Lucino Jr "Bran Lorenzo", his grandson

My grandfather was the middle child of a poor family in the island of Pintuyan, Southern Leyte. I don't know if you all know of the situation in Pintuyan, but the island is so poor that the main staple crop is not rice but is camates and maize. As a child, it was difficult for him to live in that the scarcity of food was paramount, and his stepmother was not so kind to the children of my great grandfather, Mr. Bernardo Lucino "Tatay Andot". At age 8, my grandfather, consumed with the passion to survive and to search for a better future and greener pastures, became  stowaway at a local banka and traveled to the island of Cebu. There he worked as a peddler seller, sold papers, and eventually acquired a habit for business, a natural skill that he always had, let alone his natural ingenuity. Time passed where he eventually became owner of many business stands in Cebu and met my grandmother, who was then a college student majoring in Teaching Education. Both fell in love and eventually moved to what is now Tagbilaran, Bohol. Mr. Rustico Aray Lucino would eventually prosper in business tradings and would always remind his children, all seven of them, of their roots and the beauty of hard work and the results of hard work; let alone stressing to them that one's poor and humble beginnings is never a permanent issue, rather, it is by ambition, natural ability, and passion to succeed that dictates one's future. He reminds us that had he not left Pintuyan at age 8 on a banka, his children and grandchildren would have never been.

During the prime of his life, Mr. Rustico Aray Lucino, went back to Pintuyan to visit his father and relatives (many of whom believed that he had died and drowned). And one day my grandfather went to the beaches where he grew up and saw old man fishing, and asked the old man if he knew of a boy named 'TITING'. The old man, said outright, "Yes i knew Titing, he was my son that drowned many years ago." My grandfather already knew that the old man was his father, Bernardo Lucino (Tatay Andot), and without hesitation, my grandfather said, "Nong, ako si Titing."

With disbelief, my great-grandfather did not believe it. He stuck his head in the water for a moment and then raised it up. He still did not believe, shocked. He said to my grandfather, "If this is a dream, please let me not wake up." For all that time, my great grandfather thought my grandfather had died back in 1942 when he left Pintuyan on a banka at age 8. I am sure my greatgrandfather wondered to himself how his son, who was only 8 years old, could have survived outside of Pintuyan for so long and made man out of himself. This story of how they reconnected, to me, is a powerful personal depiction of the Prodigal Son with a slight twist. In this case, the prodigal son comes back to the father not as a beggar, rather, comes back to his father as a man who succeeded in life by shear ambition, hard work, a strong work ethic. To think that a poor boy from Pintuyan could survive by himself without the umbilical tutelage of his father and family, and survived by shear will to succeed and humility. To me, this is an empowering piece.

To me, and to my siblings and cousins, it is a reminder, that hard work begets success. I cherish and ardently adore the memory of my grandfather, without whom, none of us would be alive today. We are reminded that our success and our drive and acquisitions are crowning jewels not only to us, but to our parents, and most of all, to the memory of our grandfather and grandmother, who sacrificed endlessly for their family.

A mustard seed may grow into a large tree, but the roots of that tree runs deeper than the tree itself. It is the roots that supply nutrients and support the tree.

Kaliwat Bol-anon / Re: Ferniz Family of Bohol

Thank you, Mr. Ferniz. I remember reading a published paper by one of your relatives in the Journal for Molecular Biology. Impressive piece, if I may say so myself. The subject matter was very analytical and well worded. To be published in an American Journal of Molecular Biology warrants some kind of praise for it requires grant appraisal, selection criteria is also rigid, especially in a state like California (which is known for its rules of the rules!) he he.

If I am not mistaken, my Uncle Rey told me that he had a friend (you, if i am not mistaken) back in his high school days. Ferniz was the last name.

Ferniz sounds like it is originally form Basque country (northwestern Spain). As far as I know, there was a large Basque migration to Philippines due to the descrimation they received from Carlists.

Thanks for sharing that Cujo. I think alot of patients out there are scared of doctors, are intimidated to see one, because of the psychological association between physicians and medical problems. We need to clear up this misconception. The physician and the nursing staff is there to assist, help, and treat the patient's condition. Going to see a doctor should not be hesitated for fear of 'bad news', but the mentality should be upheld that seeing a doctor is to 'get treated, see what is good and what can be done to maintain the state." he he.

There are many cases of patients who failed to visit a doctor and because of the hesitancy, was unable to diagnose or identify the benignancy. And because of the time interval, had become malignant. This is all too familiar.

The rise of Protestantism is rather interesting when one looks at it in chronological consideration in Europe. The Protestant Split preceded the fall of Absolutism in Europe and one that I find rather worthy of being read about. Interesting bitaw.
#30624
From an analytical vantage point, all differences between denominations of the Christian Faith is not based on theological difference in the core tenet; but rather, if we look at the core of the split between these denominations, it is due to political as well as monarchical ties. (tho one can argue that protestantism is a special case)

Ergo,

The Anglican Faith is similar, if not identical, to the Catholic Faith; from usage of parishes, to having priests, to the altar, the tradition is similar. The only difference is that in the Anglican Faith, the head of Church is the Monarch, in this case Queen Elizabeth while the head of the Catholic Faith is the Pope. One asks, why the split? Because King Henry VIII wanted to divorce his wife, who was a Catholic, he asked the Pope in Rome to annul his marriage with Queen Catherine of Aragorn (Spanish nobility). The Pope declined and rejected the annulment request, and therefore, prompted King Henry VIII to severe relations with the Catholic Church and placed the English Throne as the protector and Head of the English Anglican Church. So, the Anglican Church became independent because the English King wanted to marry another woman. Besides the minor hierarchical change, everything stayed the same.

In regards to the Orthodox Christians, they are, interestingly quite identical to Roman Catholics, more conservative that Catholics, I would say (i have attended Orthodox masses before--and Catholics are allowed to take the Host in Orthodox masses). The split between Catholics of the West and the Orthodox of the East concerned the aspect of leadership. While the Roman Catholics argued that the bishop of Rome , the Pope, should be recognized as the head of the entire church, the Orthodox primates argued that all bishops should be equal and that the bishop of Rome should have same level. The Orthodox primacy refused to recognize papal pentarchy , thus led to the Great Schism. It was not due to differences in core Christian tenents that led to this demise, but rather, due to the Imperial segregation. Catholic Domination of the Roman Empire was paramount prior to division of the Roman Empire to Western and Eastern Roman Empire, but when Rome was divided, the Catholic ideals and theological thought dominated the West, while Orthodox theology dominated the Eastern Roman Empire in Constantinople.

ang Christianity (Bible - old & new testaments) - motoo sa old testament(Judaism) ug may new testament ang
Christianity pero dili motoo nga may Islam (Qur'an)  pa.

ang Islam (Qur'an - new testament & Qur'an Verses)  -  motoo ang Islam pareho sa Christianity ug Judaism
pero may sariling paniniwala nga mao ang nakasulat
                                                                             Quran

The only one thing that I find interesting about Islam is that when one reads the Q'uran, there is a deep-rooted hostility between the muslims and the Al-Qitab (people of the book; particularly the Jews and the Christians).

There is a verse in the Q'uran where even nature tells a muslim to kill the Jew. It is rather interesting and one that was subject to my debate and discussion when I took Islam 2 during college. My instructor, Prof Suleiman, did not have an answer that satisfied my query.

The verse:

The last hour would not come unless the Muslims will fight against the Jews and the Muslims would kill them until the Jews would hide themselves behind a stone or a tree and a stone or a tree would say: Muslim, or the servant of Allah, there is a Jew behind me; come and kill him.
Hadith Sahih Muslim [41:6985]

#30626
What are the differences between the denominations of the Christian Faith?
What is their unifying similarity?
#30627
Thank you for that , islander.

On differences:

1. Judaism is strict observance of the Law, namely the Talmudic Laws. Judaism believes that it is in the works, and in devout prayer that one can receive salvation from YWEH. Judaism upholds sacrifice and repentance to YWEH by striving after righteousness and sacrifice.
"Rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the Lord your God: for he is gracious and full of compassion, slow to anger and plenteous in mercy, and repenteth him of the evil" (Joel 2:13).

2. In Christianity, Salvation is in Jesus Christ. There is no salvation in no other. Christ is considered the Son of God (The Word Made Flesh) and that his communion with the Father and the Holy Spirit makes up the core Christian tenent of Trinitarian Unity. Or "Divine Triumvirate".
Christ came down from Heaven, was crucified for our sins and was raised in Glory. So that those who believe in Him will see Life and not be subject to the Law.

3. In Islam, the Prophet Muhammad is considered the last prophet, they consider Jesus Christ as a prophet and not the son of God. Muslims are precarious in that they, too, observe some aspects of the Laws proposed in Judaism. Manner of actions and how one behaves is mandated by the Shariah, the life of the Prophet. Salvation in Islam is in no man, but in works, prayer. Salvation in Islam is the personal recognition and worship of the "Allah".

~

In Judaism, it is forbidden to eat the flesh of swine/pigs for they are considered dirty and lowest of all animals. Islam also forbids the eating of pork and such. The way these two faiths prepare meat is also meticulous. Strict Conservative Jews (Orthodox) will eat only Kosher meats, while conservative and practicing muslims will prefer to eat Halal.

Christians , in general, do not practice this restriction. Only because of one statement that Jesus Christ of Nazareth told us in Mark Chapter 7 verses 18-23.

And he saith unto them, Are ye so without understanding also? Do ye not perceive, that whatsoever thing from without entereth into the man, [it] cannot defile him; Because it entereth not into his heart, but into the belly, and goeth out into the draught, purging all meats? And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man. or from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: All these evil things come from within, and defile the man

hidden  agenda kini ngano nga ang Germany nagpadala ug contingent,  pag interview sa German president ingon man siya nga justifiable ang presence sa Bundeswehr to preserve german economic interest, mao kadto nga gi-uwan siya ug criticism, resign lagi sya.

Germany's presence in the region is understandable, considering the fact that it is the German economic machine/ industrial machine that supports the entire EU. She must protect her interests, not only for the Good of Deutschland, but for the good of all Europe who depend on her.

I believe that Germany's military should not be hindered because of the mistakes of the past. Additionally, the German military's active participation is a reminder to Russia and its bloc that Western Europe is not as soft as it thinks, let alone, think that the finess of Germany has lost any of its spark.

Germany was never conquered by the Roman Empire. And the only reason why Germany ever succumbed to the Allied Powers in WWII was because of the odds against her. Germany was fighting not only the combined forces of The United States, Britain, French Resistance, as well as the full force of the Soviet Union. Military historians say that had the United States and Britain failed to open the fronts in North Africa, Italy and Northern France, then Germany would have never had any difficulty in overwhelming the Russians. History would be different.

It is undeniable that Germany (Prussia) has a glorious military past and a glorious future. Who could ever forget The Prussian Lancers' charge against Napoleon's Imperial Old Guard (elite of the elite) during the Battle of Waterloo and literally broke the French Line.

Napoleon would later state with unbelievable shock, "They have what? The Prussians did what?...The Old Guard...retreats?"

The man was 64 years old and forgot to bring extra medication from the states. It was his own negligence that led to his own death; he should have brought extra; and you can get antidepressants from any Philippine pharmacy.

The standard drug preference for depression would be SSRIs and the popular kinds are Fluoxetine, Escilatopram or Sertraline.

These types of antidepressants are found everywhere; am sure in many pharmacies in Bohol. He could have gone to a Filipino Doctor and asked for treatment, and would have been able to pick it up that day.

And depression does not kill a person; unless this man had underlying diseases besides depression. He was 64 years old and I'm only presuming that he was probably hypertensive, diabetic, and suffering some kind of Cardiac problem (the three are popular COD (causes of death)  amongst American men).

Best job ive ever had so far?

To be honest, it was probably in college. I was a research assistant for my Professor in the Molecular Biology Lab. Grading exams, running labs and making sure students followed the procedures, teaching them titration methods, explaining why Dr. O was never 'available' during his supposed office hours. puahahaha.

Hmmm, i loved being able to walk into lab with my cup of coffee and the 1st and 2ns years asking me, "Why do you come to class with coffee while we are forbidden?" And smiling and replying, "because im the Lab TA. Now go to work."

hahaha. Oh man.

Seriously tho, i loved working with my professor and other research assistants. Being called at 12 am by Prof to come to lab to prep things for the day's plans and then one time we had an emergency meeting to core in some lake by Meadville because the spectroscopy machine 'accidentally' burned his stratification samples. puahaha!

Oh and who could ever forget that one time we fell into the lake trying to core. Devn and I had to dive down to retrieve it while good ol' Skipper (Dr. O) sat in the canoe pulling for life. hahaha!

I miss it and I did enjoy it.

Bai Bedo,

I will recommend one thing that is healthy:

Take omega 3& 6 fish oil, have a fiber-rich diet, and exercise regularly. These are good supplements. The omega 3&6 effectively reduces your ldl and raises your hdl, while the fiber diet reduces triglyceride levels.

This combo can effectively strengthen cardiovascular health.

Size of home is not as important as the lot size. Ideally, i would like to build a house (preferably 1 floor plan) on a wooded terrain, with rolling hills. I want a spacious backyard to build a porch, a bonfire centered in the backyard, and tiled floor (bricked) as what we have. I want to be able to come back home, and grill or bbq whenever i want. I want to see the backyard , ample space to garden and grow my green veggies and flowers.

Preferably the same style as that my parents have. Only not a 2 story house as my parents have. I want only 1 story. Plus, ug ma tiguwang na ta, dili realistic to climb 2 stories to the master's suite. hehe.

He was not charged of  Halloway's murder, he was only a suspect but was
turned loose for lack of evidence and the body of the victim was not found either.

Concerning the death of this Peruvian woman, plenty of evidences were collected
plus a video showing  the last time the woman was seen alive with him.

In fact, he admitted to the killing on the reason of self-defense, now that's laughable,
and  robbing her also of her winnings from the poker game.
At last his eggs will be cooked.. >:(

Yes you're right. I remember reading an article years back on how his father, Paulus, was instrumental in having his charges dropped. His father was a Dutch Attorney in Netherlands Antille. Unfortunately, Paulus passed away in February. What is rather interesting is that the night he supposedly murdered the Peruvian, was the 5th year anniversary of Halloway's disappearance. Vandersloot was actually going to point the location of where Natalie's body was for 25k payment; in fact there was an FBI investigation on it. Quite interesting actually.

May he be punished according to his crimes. May it be swift and just.

Something like this:

:)

That is one thing I admire about the French; they do everything that has a taste with style and flair.

The cheaper red wines from France, Italy, Spain and some red wines in Germany (tho Germany is more renowned for its whites) are , inmho, tastier than the reds grown here in America. The reason for this is that the soil in California has a lower pH, which is the reason for the more acidic taste. The soil in Western and Central Europe is flatter, richer in nutrients, and the processing there is...aged. The Tempranillo in Spain, for example, has a undeniably rummy taste to it, due to the fact that the wine makers in Spain that prepare Tempranillo use old rum casks. Everything takes effect; from the pH level of the soil, the casks used, the humidity of the area, and the very grapes themselves.

In regards to reds from Europe, I'm fond of French; particularly Bordeaux-grown.

Father, as for me, whenever i visit my GP he usually tries to quiz me or asks me questions on clinical things.
hehehe! I once thought to myself, "jeez, when did you start being so instructive?" ha ha!
He's a good guy tho; he takes care of my entire family. Tho he did ask me if i wanted OMM (osteopathic muscular manipulation) done on me and I refused. :) He is a D.O (doctor of osteopathy) and always wants to show me different OMM techniques.

It is amazing because the Dutchman, J. Vander sloot , who was charged for the muder of Natalie Halloway, was recently charged for murder for the murder of a Peruvian woman. It was 5 years to the day that Natalie Halloway disappeared when he supposedly killed the Peruvian woman.

I hope he is punished accordingly.

Kaliwat Bol-anon / Re: Tan Ancestry
June 15, 2010, 06:21:45 AM
My great grandfather (my mother's side) was from Guangzhou, China. He was 100% Pure Han Chinese.

His Chinese name was Tan Ngai ; he arrived to the Philippines by way of Sulu then to Cebu in 1909. He arrived to the Philippines with his brother (we do not know his name); his brother stayed in Cebu, while Lolo migrated to the town of Valencia in Bohol.

His Filipino name was: Mariano Tan. He eventually married my great grandmother, Gabina Ignalan (half Castillian Spanish, half Filipina).
They had 4 children: Fortunata Tan (my grandmother), Cecilio Tan (my grand uncle), Balbina Tan (my grand aunt) and Juliano Tan (my grand uncle).

both of whom are from Valencia, Bohol.

For those who are part of the Lucino Clan.

The Lucinos are originally from Surigao City (originally), some migrating to Southern Leyte and settling in Pintuyan Island. From there, some settled in Cebu and Bohol. From here we have gone abroad; some going to Ireland, UK, Saudi & Middle East, North America (Canada, USA), and in Asia-Pacific Region.

For all those who are of the Lucino Clan. :)

I am linked to the Lucino Clan by way of my father. I am of Lucino Blood.

It is an obligation to assist help especially in this case, failure to do so is punishable in German laws.

obligatory ang CPR dinhe kon magkuha ug drivers license, the person who taught us told me not to do it since I´m a small person and I can not help a German weighing 120 kilos since the difference of our lung volume is great.

Kinahanglan tabangan kay ang kinabuhi sa tawo bili-hon.

Manay, the person who told you that was being prejudiced on your height/ size. My sister is 4'11 and is less than 100 lbs and she is a 1st year medical student proper. She is trained in CPR as well as in EKGs and as a 1st year medical student can defibrilate a patient and other acute/emergency response maneuvers. Size and height does not matter, so long as the proper technique is being implemented.

She is more than capable and is trained in CPR on any individual, be they 6'foot to 7' foot. (or anyone who is properly trained in CPR, for that matter)

The purpose of CPR is to pump the heart particularly on the lower sternal region. The purpose of the CPR is not to break the ribs by shear force (which happens when some people who are not trained in CPR use excessive force).
There is a technique in CPR, even doctors and nurses who are physically small can accomplish this.

You present a valid and legitimate point, Manay Tess. In a hypothetical situation where you were in a street and the man next to you was having respiratory arrest, or some kind of acute attack, the best thing you could do would be calm him down while call for immediate medical help (here in the United States we have the 911 dispatch, im not too familiar with Germany's immediate medic dispatch, but the same would be upheld). Or perhaps call to attention someone next to you who has some kind of medical training / or certification of CPR.

No, instead i will call paramedic team to help that certain dying person. Helping a person who is critical situation that is too risky decision because once the dying person die at someone's position he/she is automatically liable for investigation by law enforcers regarding the death of that said person.

you have a valid point, Vistabel. But for those who do help , they are protected by the Good Samaritan Laws which are in effect in some states in the United States as well as in other countries.

The Good Samaritan Laws were implemented to reduce bystanders' hesitancy in taking action in cases of people suffering some kind of acute medical ailment for fear of legal action.

Is the Good Samaritan Law upheld in the Philippines? Perhaps we can get the legal expertise of some of the lawyers/law students here in Tubag Bohol Dot Com.

Inspiration & Hope / On Gregorio Aglipay
June 15, 2010, 01:04:54 AM
Gregorio Aglipay, the founder of the Aglipayan Church, was a commendable and honorable man. I respect his nationalistic spirit, but what I find rather interesting about him was his humanistic trait of questioning and doubting. He was ordained a priest, but was excommunicated due to charges of inciting military movement within church clergy and placing hostility on the established church. Aglipay, would later denounce and reject the Trinity and accepted theological Unitarianism. Tho throughout his life and his antagonism with the Roman Catholic Church, this man who led the movement to the birth of the Aglipayan Church, in the end, Gregorio Aglipay recanted his heresy against the Catholic Church in his death bed. With this, was received back into the Catholic Church and was given a Catholic Burial.

Interesting.
