You remind me of my Anatomy Professor who had mnemonics for all the veins, arteries, and bones, and major muscles in the body. :)

Smokers (chronic cigarette smokers) have the danger of becoming hypertensive and stroke victims. The smoke that one inhales (high nicotine and tar content) damages the endothelial lining of the arterial vessels, and this leads to thrombosis--thus, thrombus formation. There are so many complications to long-term cigarette smoke. I can't even begin to remind people how many times we see patients in Med Surg, CCU, ICU with problems related to smoking: emphysema, lung cancer, tracheal cancer, laryngeal cancer, bronchitis, etc.

This is really very sad.

what goes up must come down.  all empires collapse, from the most ancient achaemenid empire to the medieval mongol empire, srivijaya empire, down to the modern british empire, western european empires, aztec empire, and the more recent soviet empire.  the world has known over 200 empires that came and went.  how many of these tried to exterminate the jews?

i hope this particular note is not inferred from the data you have gathered because, excuse me, the collapse of empires has nothing to do with the current israeli-palestinian issue.

The Ottoman Turks that used to govern what is now present day Israel (Palestine) conceded it to the British Empire after the ceasure of the 1st World War. The British would be influential in the development of the Israeli State.

The collapse of the the Roman Empire led to the rise of the Byzantine (Eastern Roman), which then collapsed to the Ottoman Turks (which expanded throughout southern and eastern europe for a good 4-5 centuries); before itself collapsing after the Young Turk Revolution and the ending of the 1st World War.

Additionally, i stated that all nations/ empires that tried to exterminate the Jews all collapsed. Your mentioning of the Azteca (mesoamerican), Srivijayan (south east asian) etc has no basis in this since these civilizations had no contact with the Jewish people or implemented a policy of wiping out a large Jewish population.

Azteca was overwhelmed by the Spanish (offspring of the Roman) Empire; while Srivijaya , a major sea-faring empire, was silenced by the Singhasari  and later the Majapahit Empire.

Note: When Hadrian ordered the razing of Jerusalem to the ground, he also ordered the renaming of Provincia Judea to Provincia Syria Palestinia; in honor of the enemy of the Jews, the Philistines. One has to understand that the basis for this renaming was that the Jews earned the enmity of Rome with their revolts and uprisings. Hadrian was adamant about his decision and sent 12 Roman Legions to quell the rebellion.

My answer to this question:

I don't think there will ever be peace in the near east.

Quote from: islander on June 17, 2010, 10:32:38 PM
it does not mean that by virtue of the ancient name of the place the ancestors of present-day palestinians were not there.

‘Recent genetic evidence has demonstrated that Palestinians as an ethnic group are closely related to Jews and represent modern descendants of a core population that lived in the area since prehistoric times,  largely predating the Arabian Muslim conquest that resulted in their acculturation, established Arabic as the predominant vernacular, and over time also Islamized many of them from various prior faiths.’  (from Palestinian People, Wikipedia)

Genetic results can also conclude that all human beings share 99.99% of the same homeobox. :)

The Arabs were an ethnic group that originally came from the Arab peninsula and expanded throughout the region as traders, herders and nomads. The forced explusion of the Hebrews and the subsequent raizing of Jerusalem to the ground created a void in the region; and the region was resettled by non-Hebrews.

The term Palestine is in itself vague because the term was coined by Roman promulgation in order to erase the Jewish presence or knowledge thereof from the histories. The entire region of Provincia Judea was renamed to Syria Palestinia after the 2nd Great Jewish Revolt after the Romans sent 12 legions to Judea to raize Jerusalem to the ground and to pacify the revolt (more like a genocide).

The term 'Palestine' is a foreign coinage, Roman to be exact. Byzantium retained the Roman standard and altered Syria Palaestinia to ~ Palaestinia Sultaris. When the Ottoman Turks took control of the region, they called it Falastin (retaining the Roman standard). And when Britain took control of the region after the defeat of the Ottoman Turks in 1918, renamed it as Palestine.

Thus, retaining the Roman standard.

lorenzo,

you have, indeed, inferred, in your own usual way.  inference is akin to extrapolation, which in verb form means "to come up with conclusions from known data".  please don't get me wrong, but your inference, i.e., conclusion, is a lecture on history that would have been more enjoyable to read if you bothered to summarize this particular aspect of history from your source (which, I’m prone to believe, is http://www.palestinefacts.org/ pf_early_ palestine_ brief_ history.php).  unfortunately, i find this source biased any way I look at it.  how about getting facts and distilling them from many sources first before jumping to conclusions?  there’s so much data out there from which we could infer, but it should be data from all sides that should interest us.

"No two historians ever agree on what happened, and the damn thing is they both think they're telling the truth." (Harry S. Truman)

oh, the wikipedia (on the palestinian people) in this instance strikes me as more balanced.  (quite unlike the wikipedia entry on our homegrown iglesia ni cristo which is inherently biased.)  needless to say, for purposes of scholarly research, it would be greatly appreciated if you quote or name your source when you post entries such as these.

and while we’re at it, we’re both veering away from this thread’s topic, a situation that you yourself insisted is something that you strictly guard against.  what could have been a topic started by you and answerable with a yes or no with some explanation perhaps for one’s answer has now morphed into a history lesson.  be that as it may, i am at least assured that you won’t delete your own entry.

We're not veering from the topic, rather, my little inference was just to remind you that Palestine was not the original. The term Palestine was a foreign (Roman, to be exact) impression on the near east. So it gives credence to States' statement.

And as far as I know, Crete was ruled by the Greeks. That island was ruled by the ancient Minoans (Mycenaean), who were Greek-speaking people. The island was (and is)  linked to the mainland Greek-city states (Greek League). So could have the Philistines been from Crete? Sure, since Crete was part of the Greek League, and since the Philistines were Greek-speaking people.

Smoking tobacco leaves was different from the smoking of cigarettes, Vistabel. My great grandmother smoked tobacco leaves and lived up to the age of 87 years old. However, the smoking of pure dried tobacco leaves is different from the nicotine-infused and tartar-rich cigarettes that they sell in any store. Higher concentration of particulates in cigarettes.

In fact, cigarette smoking (heavy and long term) and smokers are at high risk of developing hypertension, cardiovascular problems, lung pathologies (emphysema, lung cancer etc).

Kon maka cause ug cancer  ang smoking ngnong dili man e totally ban ?
Ang akong mga Lolo ug Lola smokers sa dinahon nga segarilyo nga ilang likiton
miabot man ug 81 years old.

Dili ko katuo ng maka cause ug lung cancer kay nay dili smoker, nacancer man.

Mr. Daray,
Cancer (neoplasm) is an uncontrolled growth of cells due to a genetic defect of tumor suppressors, as well as a deficient cell-mediated lytic system, whose main goal is to destroy normally senescent cells (impaired ability). Lung cancer is but one type of cancer. Lung cancer is when the TNF (tumor necrosis factor) is deviated or destroyed due to a mutation of the P-53 gene in the chromosome, due to high / long term exposure of smoking. The continuous trauma to the lung epithelium by smoking and inhaling smoke changes the natural epithelium into stratified squamous epithelium, and continued irritation leads to deformity of the tissues and leads to pre-neoplastic conditions and then later neoplasia. And thus this growth spreads to the lung tissue and grows uncontrolled.

When this neoplastic growth enters the lymph node or the systemic circulation, it becomes malignant, meaning the uncontrolled growth of cells (cancer) will spread systemically. Lung cancer will spread to neighbouring organ systems that share the same blood route, thus it spreads to the adrenals, brain, liver, and bone.

Patients therefore who do not smoke can get cancer if they are exposed to the same effectors as those who smoke. In this case smoke, particulates, per chronic duration.

This is why there is such a large percentage of cancer deaths due to second hand smoking.

As far as i know, there is no debate about this anymore in the medical community. It is widely accepted truth. In fact, treatment regimen depends on this truth.
~~

what we are doing now (new treatment regimen) is called gene therapy. We are now working on synthetic gene therapy to produce excess P-53 gene products so as to combat the neoplastic growth. This has been quite effective on animal experiments; if it continues , it will  proceed to higher stages in FDA experiments and if it passes regulations, will be used in human treatment.

This treatment regimen is based on our accepted medical understanding of the processes that leads to cancer and its spread; and most of all, the mechanisms of action that facilitates it.

Book Reviews / Re: A Tale of Two Cities
June 17, 2010, 01:37:18 PM
Yes, yes! Bastille, indeed, was the place where they placed Leo de Caprio's character in. French revolutionary thinkers associated it with Absolutism and rigidity of the Monarchy. It's funny how you mentioned Sodom and Gomorrah, because the two cities (Paris and London) were considered the cities of filth , grime, and uncontrolled revolutionary thought back in the 18th to 19th centuries.

There was a Spanish saying that conservative Spanish nobles would tell their children prior to studying in Paris,
"Estudie el académico, y no se asocie en las barras de café"
(Study and focus on academics, and do not attend the cafe bars)

The reason for this, interestingly, is because it was in the cafe bars, coffee shops that Enlightenment thought and ideas were spread amongst the third estate (the commoners). Spanish students that studied in Paris, upon entering these so called coffee shops, were overwhelmed with the foreign ideas; such as universal equality, religious freedom, republican ideals. Spain, and the Spanish society was ultra conservative and super-catholic that any notion of liberalism that was so openly accepted in France was stamped out.

Conservative cities such as Madrid, Muscovy,  Vienna, Berlin (Brandenburg), Lisbon and Rome considered the two cities (London and post-revolutionary Paris) as being the cities of filth. Paris was so feared by the Absolutist Kingdoms because of concern that the revolution would spread to their own lands.
And it did spread; by point of gun.

and Ms. K,  sometimes, silence means yes and could be the mother of all f***-ups in a corporate world.  hehe ;D    :-[

or in the medical field, when interns are told something, its best to just be silent and nodd our heads in front of our attending/instructors. It's okay to be confident, but there are some docs that have what we call the "God Complex", specially surgeons. When they say something , we learned that its just best to be silent or just nodd.

One time, we asked one attending to repeat something (this was when we were being taught the brachial plexus on a body), the doc said to us,
"Oh oh, don't tell me, you want to be an Otolaryngologist?"

We responded, "No, Doctor..."

He replied back, "When unless you listen hard the first time, i suggest you go to the ENT floor!"

IFTHEY WANT TO DIE, LET THEM DIE ALONE!

Indeed. My grand aunt died because of second hand smoke, and she never smoked a day in her life. She was a college professor at Bohol University School of Nursing; and was exposed to smoke from colleagues , the doctors, and the students that smoked. (It was pop culture to smoke in the 70's). There are many rare cases of older patients who have smoked long term and have lived a long life, yes, sure. However, for the majority, long term smoking destroys the delta p-53 tumor suppressor gene, and this is positively attributed to systemic neoplastic growth and eventual malignancy.

long term smokers are so heavily addicted and dependent on nicotine and the habit of smoking that it is almost impossible for them to quit (some do tho). i think there are rare cases of some aged smokers that do not succumb to cancer; because for the most part, lung carcinoma is highly affiliated to long term smoking. Smoking not only harms the smoker but, as you said, those around (2nd hand smokers).

let tears flow as it eases the pain,
most of all, dont be afraid to let that special someone
wipe the tears away.

Poems and Poets / Elegy for Rob Matson

Time is not the guardian of what we give today.
We give to those unborn and those passed by,
to every Thought of God, and to
the Mind in which these Thoughts were born,
and where They rest. We remind them of
their resting place each time we tell
ourselves, "I rest in God."

I was cleaning my room today and getting things organized when i found the copy of Nascent Constellation that you gave me.
I find it funny how you always make yourself known as if to tell me that you're there.
So i'm going back to Philippines this July btw.
Yea, our plan to go together in '07 never manifested,
so i'm going back alone in '10.
I wish you could see it with me, Robbo.

Al.

I dont know what made him do this, God bless his faith, but to go into a personal war to kill (even an enemy of the nation) is not warranted. Joking aside, it is good that he was arrested by the Pakistani forces and was prevented from going on his lone mission. For sure, he would have been gunned down by islamofascists in Afghanistan.

Let the military deal with security matters.

Islander, if i may infer:

Prior to the Great Jewish Revolt, present day Israel was known as Judea, it was only after the pacification of many Jewish revolts that the Romans changed the name from Judea to Palestine.

When the Romans exerted their influence in Judea in 63BC, this lead to hostility between the two peoples and would later lead to the Roman pacification of Jewish revolts and thus lead to the destruction of the Jewish Temple in 70AD. The Jews would later revolt in the 2nd century AD in what is known as the Bar Kokhba uprising, which lead to a prompt and devastating Roman response. The Romans implemented an ancient world version of 'Shock And Awe' by destroying and razing Jerusalem to the ground and pacified the Jews in Judea, thereby forcing the Jewish people in a diaspora. Many of whom were forced to leave for Hispaniola and Central Europe. The Jews in Iberia would later be called Sephardi Jews and the Jews in present day central and eastern europe would be called the Ashkenazi Jews.

Rome, by Imperial Promulgation under the reign of Emperor Hadrian, renamed Judea ("Provincia Judea") into Palestine ("Syria Palaestina") in order to erase the memory of the Jews. The Arabs then came to settle Judea (since it was devoid of its original inhabitants). The Byzantines retained the Roman name and modified it to "Palastinia Sultaris"; and when Byzantium was conquered by the Ottoman Turks, it was renamed to Falastin; the Arabs have retained the term Falastin. The English equivalent of Falastin is: Palestine.

Prior to the Great Revolt, the Arab presence in Judea was minimal. Hebrews dominated the land, and it was only after Hadrian sent 12 Roman legions (a force of about 60,000 men) to pacify Judea did their presence fall. Rome tried to exterminate the Jews in that savage campaign, as it did with the Carthaginians in their 3 Punic Wars. The difference here is that Rome did erase Carthage from the known world, even as much as pouring salt over Carthage and enslaved its entire population, thereby stamping out the only rival to Roman domination of the Mediterranean World. Rome, however, was not successful in regards to its extermination of the Jews. While Rome did destroy Jerusalem and forced the Hebrews in a global diaspora, the Jews outlived the Roman Empire, and have resettled their original homeland. The descendants of Abraham continue to pray before the wall of the Great Temple, while, the Eagle of Rome has long rusted into oblivion.

Note: all an every power that tried to exterminate the Jews all failed. Alexander's Empire collapsed, Babylon collapsed, The Roman Empire collapsed , Nazi Germany collapsed, and most recently the Arab nations that tried to stamp out Israel were defeated in all of its wars with Israel.

all believes that there's one supreme being

Yes.

All three claim Abraham {Ibrahim, for the muslims} as their patriarch.

Difference:
1. Jews and Christians believe that Abraham's rightful heir was Isaac (son of Sarah).
2. Muslims believe that Ibrahim's rightful heir was Ismael , not Isaac.

--

Something that is worthy of consideration is that in the Q'uran, it does not specifically name the child that was to be sacrificed by Ibrahim before the Almighty One. Muslims believe that it was Ismail, however, the Q'uran does not say the name of the child. The Old Testament (Hebrew Bible) of the Holy Bible explicitly names the child; It was Isaac, not Ismael.

From the Q'uran:

"So when they had both submitted their wills (to God), and he had laid him prostrate on his forehead (for sacrifice), we called out to him, ‘O Ibrahim! Thou hast already fulfilled thy vision’ - thus indeed do we reward those who do right. For this was obviously a trial - And we ransomed him with a momentous sacrifice ..."
(Surah 37:99-106).

However, in the Old Testament Bible (Talmud), the child was Isaac.

From The Bible

"When they came to the place of which God had told him, Abraham built an altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar, upon the wood. Then Abraham put forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son. But the angel of The Lord called to him from heaven, and said, "Abraham, Abraham!"
"Here I am," Abraham replied.
"Do not lay a hand on the boy," he said. "Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son."

(Genesis 22: 9-12)

Islander, thank you for the link to the site.

On differences:

1. Judaism & Islam: Are both prophetic, both uphold the laws, both do not recognize Christ as the Son of God
1.2 Judaism does not record Christ Jesus, nor is he considered a Prophet, but a rabbi
1.3 Islam does not recognize Christ Jesus as the Son of God in the Christian Sense, but is a Prophet in Islam.
Jesus Christ is known as 'ISSA' in the Q'uran and was the prophet prior to Mohamed.
1.4 Islam and Judaism do not believe that a man can be equivalent to God nor believe that the Almighty would become man

2. Christianity believes that Righteousness is impossible task. Romans 3:23 "For all have sinned before God."
2.1 Salvation is in not in works, not in righteousness, but in faith in Christ Jesus. (Salvation Tenet)
2.2 The prophets prior to Christ upheld the Law, but Christ (The Word Made Flesh) perfected the Law. Faith supersedes the Law.
2.3 Christianity upholds that there can be no prophet after Christ (The Word Made Flesh), therefore nullifies legitimacy of Islam.

My father is the one that controls the money. Fiscally conservative and very responsible in financial management. My mother is kind hearted, she gives to who ever needs help especially to family in the Philippines. My father is very stern, and prompt when it comes to finances. Engineering mentality. I would say that I would like to be just like my dad when it comes to financial responsibility and control of what I make. :)

This is really interesting how we can use indomethacin to not only inhibit COX1 and COX2 but can also be used to treat acute gout and has effective regimen as compared to say, colchicine. For chronic gout: best to use allopurinol (moa: inhibitos xanthine oxidase; thus prevents uric acid from being formed) and probenicid (also used as adjuvant to antimicrobial therapy.

One thing i realize is that there are so many treatment indications for such drugs. But toxicity is already such a concern. Worrying about hematologic effects and then GI disorders too.

No wonder why residents and attending physicians are so strict; sharp memorization is necessary.

Dr. Barone, you rock.

Dear _______________,

I still cannot believe your words and your mannerisms and what you said to me that day. Sure, it's been years since then, but do you think i can forget the harshness of your tongue that was targeted to me? You know that i used to hold you in such a pedestal , perhaps it was my youthful inexperience that warranted such judgement, nevertheless, it was so.

I considered you my morning, my evening, my northern star, yet you spurned me to the side. You bewitched me, darling, truly you did, for it took me so long to get over you. Years.

Tell me, were our kisses, our romantic moments, where they nothing at all to you? Perhaps for you, but for me, as sad as it is, i still think about them even when another loves me. Lee invited you to an outing with us last month and do you know what that did to me?

How should i have known that you were coming; had i known beforehand, i would have never agreed to attend. But i do not regret seeing you, oddly enough. If i may, you have grown ever so beautiful as you graced in age. Your kindness has not changed, tho the wounds you gave me still throbs from time to time, why did you have to be so beautiful? It would have been easier for me to get over you had you been just 'average' looking.

You know, when i saw you again, you ignited something. Damn you. I hate you for this. I hate you..yet..i love you...

Why have you bewitched me again?

A.

im surprised you caught it so quickly, bugsay. the lyrics to this song is so touching, i could not help but use it as a message.

ps. as much as you still remember your former love, am sure she still remembers you too. even when i force myself to forget my 1st gf, i fail utterly. how can i forget her lips..the lips that i first kissed? and her body that used to taunt me in dreams in yesteryears. the aroma sweeter than nectar, and more exotic than pomegranate. she was both a blessing and a curse. a blessing because to have loved her was an awakening; a curse because separation from her was..unbearable.

i have not seen her in 7 years. and still.

Poems and Poets / Remember

Roxie A. Yockey

Yesterday life was so precious, so new
Filled with the promise
Of dreams to come true
Yesterday we held hands
And walked in the lane
Yesterday I asked you
To take my ring and my name
Yesterday we took our stroll down the aisle
Yesterday we married
We did it in style
Yesterday we had a daughter
We had a child, can this be true?
Yesterday we had a son
And now there are two.
Yesterday our daughter took our son by the hand
Helping him to walk, helping him to stand
Yesterday all of our parents
Were here and alive
Helping us along, helping us strive
Yesterday our grandparents
They were here too
Loving and laughing
Seeing us thru
Yesterdays are such a very special time
Single days in a journey
All falling into line
And what do you think happens
When yesterdays are all thru?
Why, we give them our blessings
And pass them all on to you.

Poems and Poets / They Sleep

The dead they sleep a long, long sleep;
The dead they rest, and their rest is deep;
The dead have peace, but the living weep.
