Question and Answer / Re: Do you fear death?

We should not be afraid to die. We all just need to be ready for it. I believe that we will all be judged someday as to how we lived. Moreover, we should leave good memories to the people we will leave behind. I am not afraid to die, I am just not ready yet, spiritually. But what can we do when our time comes?

It will solve itself, somehow. There is nothing to do, not even anything to think of. It will be as easy as pie, really...

If you read more about Aristotle politics, he depicted that it is the citizens with the pursuit of virtue do the moulding. :)

Precisely. And how do "citizens with the pursuit of virtue" sit in relation to "government"?

It's a bit offtopic regarding this thread but let me shed on the perspective of Aristotle's philosophy. Now he stated that all government types have a negative form. Discerning the good and bad ruling. We have these forms democracy, tyranny, oligarchy and monarchy. When it must be in the hands of one, of a few, or of the many; then governments may govern for the general good or for the good of the rulers. Government by a single person for the general good is known as “monarchy”; for private benefit called “tyranny.” Government by a minority is “aristocracy” if it aims at the state’s best interest and “oligarchy” if it benefits only the ruling minority. Popular government in the common interest, he calls “polity or constitutional government.

According to Aristotle, democracy is not the best form of government. As well also true of oligarchy and monarchy. The rule in democracy is for and by the people named in the government type. In democracy, rule is by and for the needy. On the contrary, the rule of law or aristocracy literally, power which is rule of the best or even monarchy where the ruler has the interest of his country at heart or the pursue of virtue are better types of government.

One may deplore that it is not the responsibility of the city to enact laws encouraging citizens to act virtuously, but rather that moral education belongs more properly to an individual household. In Aristotle's view, "virtue must be a care for every city," because "the city exists not only for the sake of living but rather primarily for the sake of living well". :D

I appreciate your lecture but let's be honest, do you believe you have answered my question? Gobbledygook is fine with me, but I'm not sure how other TB readers take it.

When the citizens obey bad laws, do we have a good government?

I take it to mean that by “government” here you mean the body politic and not the more common definition of government as consisting of a group of persons with the authority to exercise administrative control of a state.

I can't speak for the moderator, but to consider topics to be "irrelevant and inactive" simply because they have not caught the sense and sensibility of members--at the moment--is rather ill-considered. Just because one astronomer fails to apprehend a star does not make it a candidate for expunction. And what, I pray, are "mess threads"?

Philippines is among the cheapest cigarettes in Southeast Asia or the whole world. It is primarily due to inadequate tobacco tax inflation. Only 22% of it's retail price was set instead of the 70% recommendation by the WHO. What's good about it is that the revenues of the sin tax bill will be allocated for the healthcare thus improving our healthcare delivery system as well.

Supreme Court won’t stop stem cell research
Associated Press
January 08, 2013

WASHINGTON â€" The Supreme Court said Monday that it will not stop the government’s funding of embryonic stem cell research, which is opposed by some because the work relies on destroyed human embryos.

The high court refused to hear an appeal from two scientists who have been challenging the government funding for the work. The US Circuit Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia earlier this year threw out their lawsuit challenging funding for the research.

Opponents claim the National Institutes of Health has been violating the 1996 Dickey-Wicker law that prohibits taxpayer financing for work that harms an embryo.

President Obama issued an executive order in 2009 that allowed research on stem cells taken from human embryos created by in vitro fertilization.

A federal court in Washington temporarily blocked the order in 2010 after two scientists opposed to all embryonic stem cell research â€" James Sherley of the Boston Biomedical Research Institute, a nonprofit in Watertown, and Theresa Deisher of Sound Choice Pharmaceutical Institute â€" filed suit to block it. But the executive order was later upheld by federal courts.

Sherley conducts research on adult stem cells.

The Supreme Court made no comment in rejecting the appeal Monday.

Researchers hope one day to use stem cells in ways that cure spinal cord injuries, Parkinson’s disease, and other ailments.

The Supreme Court refused to step into the emotionally charged debate over embryonic stem cell research Monday, declining to hear a case that sought to stop government funding on ethical grounds.

The decision leaves in place President Obama's 2009 executive order expanding research on stem cells taken from human embryos, which many scientists say has the potential to produce breakthroughs in treatment of numerous conditions, particularly spinal cord injuries, diabetes and Parkinson's disease.

Obama reasoned that research on stem cell lines from embryos created through in vitro fertilization was not ethically problematic. Congress banned the creation or destruction of embryos for research purposes in 1996.

A federal court in Washington, D.C., issued an injunction temporarily blocking the order in August 2010 after two scientists opposed to all embryonic stem cell research, James Sherley of the Boston Biomedical Research Institute and Theresa Deisher of Sound Choice Pharmaceutical Institute, sued on behalf of "plaintiff embryos," contending that Congress had forbidden any research whatsoever on embryonic stem cells.

Since then, federal courts have rejected their contention that the failure of the National Institutes of Health and the Department of Health and Human Services to respond to their arguments rendered Obama's policy illegal.

While blinking every few seconds serves to keep your eyes lubricated, scientists have spotted another benefit: blinking gives your brain a mini-power nap.

Scientists from Japan's Osaka University examined 20 healthy young adults in a brain scanner as they watched segments of the British comedy "Mr. Bean." When subjects blinked, the researchers noticed a power-down within the brain's visual cortex and somateosensory cortex, as well as in areas that manage attention.

In a separate experiment, the team inserted about nine 165-millisecond segments of blank screentime per minute into the "Mr. Bean" video. Interestingly, although the video gave them a mini-break similar to blinking, subjects' brains didn't respond to it in the same way as a blink -- they remained attentive without powering down parts of the brain.

The study was published last week in the journal Proceedings of the National Academies of Science.

A 2008 study finds that blinking is also a giveaway for lying: fib-tellers blink less frequently during the lie and then speed up to around eight times faster than usual afterwards. The findings were published in the Journal of Non-verbal Behaviour.

Wellington, Kansas passed an ordinance last month that regulates the number of cats each household can own. Families in the area are now barred from owning more than 4 cats. The new restriction matches the number of dogs each household is allowed.

Police from the area have noted that in November of 2012 alone, 231 cats were picked up. According to Wellington Daily News, Police Chief Tracy Heath expressed that 87% of those cats were put down. “…Those are cats that go to the animal clinic, they’re there for the allotted time, and then unfortunately they are euthanized.”

The ordinance also set conditions for adopted cats. Cats shall be vaccinated for rabies; they must also be spayed or neutered by a licensed veterinarian, unless the cat is being adopted to a home outside of the city, according to Wellington Daily News.

While reactions to the ordinance are mixed, it remains unclear exactly how the new limit will impact the number of cats being euthanized.
