A local son has made this place of sweet mangoes proud.

The 26-year-old Rene Gamarcha Herrera, a bemedalled athlete from tiny Guimaras Island is one of only 11 sportsmen chosen by the Philippine Olympic Committee to represent the country in the 2012 London Olympics in August.

The strapping young man from the capital town of Jordan earned the nod of sports officials due to his consistent, high-caliber performance in the Southeast Asian Games.

There, he emerged the undisputed ruler in the 1,500- meter and the 5,000-meter run events.

To make it to the final cast of 11 athletes, probably one of the smallest contingents during the Olympics, is no mean feat considering the intense rivalry among Filipino players who dream of being dubbed “An Olympian.”

When asked on his physical conditioning, the soft-spoken Herrera replied in his native Ilonggo language he has not reached his peak yet.

Herrera will leave for Hong Kong July 1 to compete in the HK Inter-City Championships Open Meet. - PNA

by pna - The legal battle between Cebuano talent manager Annabelle Rama and two former actresses has reached the Office of the Cebu City prosecutor.

Annabelle Rama, a cousin of Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama, Thursday filed libel charges against Amalia Fuentes, Nadia Montenegro and entertainment reporter Chito Alcid for allegedly maligning her reputation.

Annabelle Rama filed 10 counts of libel against Montenegro, eight counts against Fuentes, and seven counts against Alcid for posting allegedly libelous statements on social networking sites.

The talent manager was accompanied by her lawyer Delon Richel Ramon Urot; her brother, Basak San Nicolas Barangay Captain George Rama; and other family members and supporters when she subscribed her complaints before Assistant City Prosecutor Liceria Rabillas.

In her complaints, Annabelle Rama said the comments and tweets posted by her showbiz critics on Facebook and Twitter contain “libelous and defamatory statements tending to injure and impeach my honesty, virtue, honor, reputation and integrity.”

Annabelle Rama also said she is now 99 percent sure of running for a House seat in Cebu City’s north district in next year’s elections.

China will invest 175 billion yuan (27.5 billion U.S. dollars) from 2011 to 2015 to ensure the quality of drinking water in rural areas, a vice minister of water resources said Friday.

Li Guoying, the vice minister, made the remarks at the bi-monthly session of the National People's Congress Standing Committee that runs from Tuesday to Saturday.

The investment will be supported by both central and local finance channels as well as the farmers who stand to benefit from the policy, Li said.

He added 68 percent of the total investment, or 118.8 billion yuan, will be provided by the central government. - PNA

Technology / Direct-marketing strategy in Thailand
June 29, 2012, 04:37:13 PM
Aspen Research Group, creator of the world-leading “Aspen Graphics” family of stock analysis software, announces its direct-marketing strategy in Thailand.

With local company,InfoQuest Limited, providing data content, and local company, ThaiQuest Limited, providing software modifications and enhancements, Aspen aims for top market share in every market segment in Thailand by mid-2013, as well as expansion into Asia-Pacific markets.

Aspen Research Group president, John Praetorius, reveals that the choice of Thailand for Aspen’s direct-marketing initiative is due to its strong stock market and bright outlook compared to other countries in the region.

The version of Aspen Graphics software being directly licensed in Thailand has been modified and enhanced by ThaiQuest, known for its strong software development team.

ThaiQuest has licensed these modifications and enhancements to Aspen. Data content, including domestic and international news, as well as financial and investment data, are provided by InfoQuest. Both Thai collaborators are highly experienced in the Thai market, and both truly understand the fundamental needs of Thai investors.

John Praetorius observes: “Tens of thousands of professionals in banks, brokerage firms and investment houses in Thailand have used Aspen Research Group software for over 20 years now. The software is commonly known as Apex when marketed through Aspen Research Group’s distributor in Thailand. However, we now feel confident that we can successfully market our products and services directly in Thailand, due to our collaboration with ThaiQuest and InfoQuest, who possess good understanding of the Thai market and work well with us to promptly address client requests.”

Aspen Graphics was introduced to the Thai market in 1990 under the name Apex through Bisnews Public Company Limited, a company owned by Jalthong Patamapongs. Bisnews Public Company Limited sold its assets to Reuters in 1997, who later transferred the business to Bisnews AFE (Thailand) Limited in 2004.

Aspen Graphics is and has always been the stock analysis software with the highest number of professional users in Thailand. Recently, Aspen Research Group introduced a separate browser-based product, targeting individual investors, to expand into the general market segment. It also began directly licensing Aspen Graphics software to clients in Thailand last year. When Aspen’s distribution agreement with Bisnews AFE expires on June 30, 2013, Aspen Research Group will be the sole licensor of its software in Thailand.

Consistent with its commitment to the Thai market, Aspen Research Group has opened a branch office in Thailand.

Aspen marketing and customer relations executives are working alongside InfoQuest and ThaiQuest to approach clients, provide technical support, and obtain feedback to continually improve response to client needs.

“We will not be complacent about clients’ comments and requirements; we will try to improve and enhance our software to meet clients’ expectations; we will make sure that Aspen Graphics is the best and the most cost-effective, real-time stock analysis software in Thailand,” says John Praetorius.

In Thailand, Aspen Research Group is offering its Aspen Graphics software on two platforms â€" Aspen for Windows, targeting brokerage firms and professional investors, and Aspen for Browser, targeting individual investors. At present, Aspen Research has directly licensed its software to more than 10 brokerage clients, including Krungsri Securities PCL, Kaitnakin Securities Company Limited, Country Group Securities PCL, CIMB Securities International (Thailand) PCL, DBS Vickers Securities (Thailand) Company Limited, Trinity Securities Company Limited, TISCO Securities Company Limited, Thanachart Securities PCL, Bualuang Securities PCL, Maybank Kim Eng Securities (Thailand) PCL, OSK Securities (Thailand) PCL.

Aspen Research Group aims that by mid-2013, it will have the largest market share of stock analysis software in Thailand, with the highest number of users of its directly-licensed Aspen Graphics software in every market segment. It plans to use its branch office in Thailand as its regional hub to expand into other markets in Asia-Pacific.

Relationships between Aspen Research Group and ThaiQuest and InfoQuest

The collaboration between Aspen Research Group, ThaiQuest and InfoQuest stems from a strong friendship between John Praetorius, the owner of Aspen Research Group, and Jalthong Patamapongs, owner of both ThaiQuest and InfoQuest. They have known each other for over 25 years.

Jalthong Patamapongs was instrumental in supporting John Praetorius and his company from the beginning, when he became the very first Aspen Research client anywhere in the world.

About Aspen Research Group

Aspen Research Group Ltd. is a leading U.S.-based software developer specializing in charting tools for technical analysis and stock information for professional investors. Its renowned stock analysis software, “Aspen Graphics,” is widely used by professional investors and financial institutions around the world. The program supports content from international news and information providers such as Thomson Reuters and Bloomberg.

Aspen Research Group is the developer and owner of underlying rights to Aspen Graphics (also known as Apex in Thailand), a stock analysis product of Bisnews AFE (Thailand) that is popular among Thai stock brokers and financial institutions. Aspen Research Group has expanded its commitment to Thailand’s market by collaborating with InfoQuest Ltd, Thailand’s leading information service provider and news agency. The two companies are jointly offering their own products enabling stock brokers and financial institutions in Thailand to have improved and more powerful decision-making tools at a reasonable price, saving brokers and financial institutions significant operating costs.

by PNA - The Philippines’ real estate sector continues to grow as shown by the record-high level exposure of universal and commercial banks (U/KBs) and the thrift banks to the sector in the first quarter of 2012.

Data released by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) on Friday showed that combined exposure of U/KBs and TBs to the real estate sector surged by 21 percent year-on-year to P538.1 billion from year-ago’s P444.9 billion. Against the previous quarter’s P518.6 billion, the increase stood at 3.8 percent.

The central bank attributed the expansion in the banks’ real estate exposure to the 9.9 percent or P18.3 billion increase in banks’ investments in securities issued by real estate companies, and the 3.6 percent or P18.3 billion jump in real estate loans (RELs).

In actual value, RELs accounted for the bulk at P524.1 billion or 97.4 percent of the total while the balance of 2.6 percent is accounted for by investments in securities issued by real estate companies at P14 billion.

U/KBs held the bulk of the exposure at 76.9 percent or P413.9 billion and the remaining 23.1 percent or P124.2 billion is with the TBs.

The central bank said residential RELs fuelled the growth in total RELs as of last March at P11.7 billion while commercial RELs reached P6.5 billion.

Over-all, commercial RELs remain to have the bigger share at 55.6 percent amounting to P291.5 billion while residential RELs’ share reached 44.4 percent or P232.6 billion.

The RELs of U/KBs’ are largely extended to commercial purposes at 67 percent amounting to P267.9 billion while those for residential purposes accounted for the balance of 33 percent or P132 billion.

On the other hand, residential RELs held the bigger share of TBs’ RELs at 80.9 percent or P100.5 billion while the balance of 19.1 percent amounting to P23.7 billion are for commercial purposes.

The central bank cited that amid the expansion in RELs, its proportion to the banking sector’s total loan portfolio, exclusive of interbank loans remains “stable” at about 14-15 percent.

As of last March, the banking sector’s RELS to TLP ratio stood at 15.2 percent, higher than the previous quarter’s 14.5 percent after TLP went down by 0.9 percent.

Non-performing RELs went up by 5.5 percent or P1.4 billion to P26.8 billion from last December’s P25.4 billion, thus, the non-performing RELs ratio rose to 5.1 percent from quarter-ago’s five percent. However, the latest RELs ratio is lower than the 6.1 percent in March 2011.

by PNA - President Benigno S. Aquino III has declared July 2, which falls on a Monday, as a special (non-working) day in Tagbilaran City in the province of Bohol in celebration of its 46th Charter Day.

The Chief Executive issued the declaration through Proclamation No. 417 signed by Executive Secretary Paquito N. Ochoa Jr. on June 27, to give the people of Tagbilaran City the full opportunity to celebrate and participate in the occasion with appropriate ceremonies.

The city marks the commemoration of its Charter Day on July 1 which falls on a Sunday.

President Aquino granted the request of the Eleventh Sangguniang Panlungsod to declare July 2 as a special (non-working) day instead of July 1 in the city.

Tagbilaran became a chartered city on July 1, 1966 by virtue of Republic Act No. 4660.

press release:

The Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI) and the Cebu Provincial Government present
a series of segments on their joint project, the Expanded Green and Wholesome Environment that Nurtures Our Cebu program on Sugbo TV beginning May 22, three times a week, on primetime telecast.

Dubbed "Atong Sugbo", the show will highlight best practices and significant lessons of
the program and feature inspiring changes in the towns and cities of the province.
"Atong Sugbo" on Sugbo TV airs every day at 11:30 a.m. to 12nn, with replays every six hours, on Sky Cable (Channel 14) and other select cable channels  in Visayas and Mindanao.

“Our Cebu program is considered to be one of the most successful programs of Cebu.
The provincial government has been wanting to have a show, not to brag with what we have done but to promote and educate the other LGU’s on how to make advancements. So putting it in Sugbo TV, we’ll now be able to reach out to more people and make them aware that there’s this framework they can use to improve their state,” Rowena Alensonorin, RAFI Integrated Development executive director, said.

The Our Cebu program aims to create a liveable Cebu by empowering each town and city
to look at the needs of their constituents. It also intends to develop in every Cebuano a sense of pride of place.

The program employs a scorecard that sets indicators of liveability; cleanliness; sanitation and health; greening, protection and enhancement of the environment; creativitiy and aesthetic impact; nurturance of culture and heritage; and governance system and structures.

By Scott Stewart

In last week's Security Weekly, we used a thwarted underwear bomb plot, as well as the U.S. government's easing the rules of engagement for unmanned aerial vehicle strikes in Yemen, as an opportunity to examine the role of exceptional individuals in militant groups that conduct terrorist attacks. Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula's (AQAP's) innovative bombmaker, Ibrahim al-Asiri, is one such individual.

Reported by AP on May 7, the news of the thwarted underwear plot overshadowed another event in Yemen that occurred May 6: a U.S. airstrike in Shabwa province that killed Fahd al-Quso, a Yemeni militant wanted for his involvement in the attack against the USS Cole in October 2000. Al-Quso appeared in a video released by AQAP's al-Malahim Media in May 2010, during which he threatened attacks against the continental United States, its embassy in Yemen and warships in the waters surrounding Yemen.

Press Release:

With the aim to serve and help more women micro-entrepreneurs, the Ramon Aboitiz
Foundation Inc. (RAFI) Micro-finance is set to establish more branches in the provinces of Leyte and Bohol, and Cebu City.

During the June 9 episode of “Pagtuki”, the official radio program of RAFI, Noneto
Gonzales, area manager of Micro-finance Leyte, said that there are plans of putting up
additional branches in Central and Eastern Visayas, especially in rural areas.

A branch in Jagna will soon open in June for Bohol clients. More branches in the
northern part of Leyte will also be set up.

According to Richard Candelada, branch manager of Ormoc City, Leyte, there are
currently around 800 active members in Ormoc and more than 1,600 members in the entire Leyte.

RAFI Micro-finance already has branches in Ormoc, Sogod, Baybay, Maasin, Albuera,
Bato, Merida, Kanangga in Leyte and in the municipalities of Ubay, Tubigon, Talibon, and Dauis in Bohol.

RAFI Micro-finance is a program under the Micro-finance & Entrepreneurship focus
areas, which believes that a better life begins with a stable and rewarding livelihood.
RAFI Micro-finance also trains their members in saving for their future.

“In RAFI Micro-finance, we discipline our clients to have savings. Membership process is
also very easy. Giving of loan is individual. We don’t have collaterals and character is one of our bases. We also accept big amount of loans,” Gonzales said.

Clients are also given health insurance upon membership. They can benefit from this for
hospitalization purposes.

"RAFI Micro-finance program continues and never stops thinking of ways to enhance the
business skills of its clients, such as giving them free trainings,” Candelada said.

Ma. Luisa Olita, Ormoc Client Advisory Board (CAB) president, shared the big changes
in her life when she joined the program, saying, “As a member of five years, I was able to build my own house, expand my sari-sari store, buy things for our house and two motorcycles. I also learned to have discipline in handling money, such as being thrifty.”

Carter Co. in Lebanon, New Hampshire. That same year, Abigail Carter invented the first ever Overalls for use on railroads. Over the next ten years, H.W. Carter presents the original "Lebanon Overalls" for sale across New England.

By 1890 H.W. Carter & Sons became the premier manufacturer of denim overalls and "work wear". Carter's Overalls were famous throughout the United States. The company expands to marketing boy's overalls, as well as railroad overalls, painter pants, coats, jumpers and shirts eventually putting everything under the simple trademark "Carter's". Growing again a few years later to selling their new ski jackets, sport jackets and wool mackinaw coats, Carter's would soon acquire the Watch the Wear Overall Company of Keen, New Hampshire and its trade name "Watch the Wear".
