This comment was chosen by Yahoo as the Best Answer why Bayani Fernando is the next President of the Philippines

There are so many presidentiables today: Noli de Castro, Bayani Fernando, Manny Villar, Mar Roxas, Ping Lacson, Loren Legarda, Dick Gordon, Erap Estrada. But who is really the best next president? Is Bayani Fernando the better alternative?

We say yes....please allow us to explain...

1. BF is a good man. He was a sacristan as a young boy and was an Outstanding Boy Scout. He is the only boy in the family and is pampered with enough love so, he will return this love to our people.

2. BF is well bred and nationalistic. He can sing. His name, and name of his sisters (Mayumi, Ligaya) are all native. He named his only child Tala.

3. BF is pro poor. He gave homes to 11, 000 squatters. Recovered the sidewalks for poor people to pass. He exact discipline to rich and poor alike, so that the poor will equalize with the rich. Fix the house of poor people in Metro Guwapo. Provided low cost hostel to poor provincianos who are in Manila in the Port Area.

4. BF is not corrupt. Before he joined politics, he is already super rich with his companies constructing tall buildings in Makati. One lot owner who sold her lot to MMDA for a water pump anti - flood project in Tondo, Grace Dyjamco, said that what BF only requested from her is for her to take good care of the squatters inside their lot - pay them - before the deal was on.

5. BF Gets things Done. Remember before he was the MMDA chairman - traffic was worse, garbage are everywhere..now its all fixed. As a president,he can fix our poverty problem, corruption problem, electoral problem,...he has a way of doing things and its working.You can see results at once.

6. BF is Brave and Heroic. As a young businessman during EDSA Revolution, he sent his construction equipments to EDSA to block the pro-Marcos tanks and protect the people. Colorum buses are protected by Generals..he impounded them, never afraid of the bullets of the general..BF is a type of leader who can die for his people.

7. BF is not social climber. Although he is a super rich person, and married to Mayor Marides Fernando from an old rich family (daughter of industrialist Meneleo Carlos), he loves to mingle with hardworking professionals and his jokes are authentic Marikina masa jokes with original Marikina accent. He maintains his clean and honest way of living. He does not crave for the company of the rich and the powerful.

Jose Garcia Villa

Jose Garcia Villa (August 5, 1908 â€" February 7, 1997) was a Filipino poet, literary critic, short story writer, and painter. He was awarded the National Artist of the Philippines title for literature in 1973,[1] as well as the Guggenheim Fellowship in creative writing by Conrad Aiken.[2] He is known to have introduced the "reversed consonance rime scheme" in writing poetry, as well as the extensive use of punctuation marksâ€"especially commas, which made him known as the Comma Poet.[3] He used the penname Doveglion (derived from "Dove, Eagle, Lion"), based on the characters he derived from himself. These animals were also explored by another poet e.e. cummings in Doveglion, Adventures in Value, a poem dedicated to Villa.[1]

Walt Whitman

Walter Whitman (May 31, 1819 â€" March 26, 1892) was an American poet, essayist, journalist, and humanist. He was a part of the transition between Transcendentalism and realism, incorporating both views in his works. Whitman is among the most influential poets in the American canon, often called the father of free verse.[1] His work was very controversial in its time, particularly his poetry collection Leaves of Grass, which was described as obscene for its overt sexuality.

Born on Long Island, Whitman worked as a journalist, a teacher, a government clerk, and a volunteer nurse during the American Civil War in addition to publishing his poetry. Early in his career, he also produced a temperance novel, Franklin Evans (1842). Whitman's major work, Leaves of Grass, was first published in 1855 with his own money. The work was an attempt at reaching out to the common person with an American epic. He continued expanding and revising it until his death in 1892. After a stroke towards the end of his life, he moved to Camden, New Jersey where his health further declined. He died at age 72 and his funeral became a public spectacle.[2][3]

Whitman's sexuality is often discussed alongside his poetry. Though he is usually labeled as either homosexual or bisexual,[4] it is unclear if Whitman ever had a sexual relationship with another man[5] and biographers continue to debate his sexuality. Whitman was concerned with politics throughout his life. He supported the Wilmot Proviso and opposed the extension of slavery generally, but did not believe in the abolitionist movement.

O Captain! My Captain!
by
Walt Whitman

1

O CAPTAIN! my Captain! our fearful trip is done;
The ship has weather’d every rack, the prize we sought is won;
The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting,
While follow eyes the steady keel, the vessel grim and daring:
    But O heart! heart! heart!            5
      O the bleeding drops of red,
        Where on the deck my Captain lies,
          Fallen cold and dead.

2

O Captain! my Captain! rise up and hear the bells;
Rise upâ€"for you the flag is flungâ€"for you the bugle trills;     10
For you bouquets and ribbon’d wreathsâ€"for you the shores a-crowding;
For you they call, the swaying mass, their eager faces turning;
    Here Captain! dear father!
      This arm beneath your head;
        It is some dream that on the deck,     15
          You’ve fallen cold and dead.

3

My Captain does not answer, his lips are pale and still;
My father does not feel my arm, he has no pulse nor will;
The ship is anchor’d safe and sound, its voyage closed and done;
From fearful trip, the victor ship, comes in with object won;     20
    Exult, O shores, and ring, O bells!
      But I, with mournful tread,
        Walk the deck my Captain lies,
          Fallen cold and dead.

Edgar Allan Poe

Edgar Allan Poe (January 19, 1809 â€" October 7, 1849) was an American poet, short-story writer, editor and literary critic, and is considered part of the American Romantic Movement. Best known for his tales of mystery and the macabre, Poe was one of the earliest American practitioners of the short story and is considered the inventor of the detective-fiction genre. He is further credited with contributing to the emerging genre of science fiction.[1] He was the first well-known American writer to try to earn a living through writing alone, resulting in a financially difficult life and career.[2]

He was born as Edgar Poe in Boston, Massachusetts, Poe's parents died when he was young. Poe was taken in by John and Frances Allan, of Richmond, Virginia, but they never formally adopted him. After spending a short period at the University of Virginia and briefly attempting a military career, Poe and the Allans parted ways. Poe's publishing career began humbly, with an anonymous collection of poems, Tamerlane and Other Poems (1827), credited only to "a Bostonian".

Poe switched his focus to prose and spent the next several years working for literary journals and periodicals, becoming known for his own style of literary criticism. His work forced him to move between several cities, including Baltimore, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and New York City. In Baltimore in 1835, he married Virginia Clemm, his 13-year-old cousin. In January 1845, Poe published his poem "The Raven" to instant success. His wife died of tuberculosis two years later. He began planning to produce his own journal, The Penn (later renamed The Stylus), though he died before it could be produced. On October 7, 1849, at age 40, Poe died in Baltimore; the cause of his death is unknown and has been attributed to alcohol, brain congestion, cholera, drugs, heart disease, rabies, suicide, tuberculosis, and other agents.[3]

Poe and his works influenced literature in the United States and around the world, as well as in specialized fields, such as cosmology and cryptography. Poe and his work appear throughout popular culture in literature, music, films, and television. A number of his homes are dedicated museums today.

Annabel Lee
by Edgar Allan Poe

It was many and many a year ago,
In a kingdom by the sea,
That a maiden there lived whom you may know
By the name of Annabel Lee;
And this maiden she lived with no other thought
Than to love and be loved by me.

I was a child and she was a child,
In this kingdom by the sea:
But we loved with a love that was more than love -
I and my Annabel Lee;
With a love that the winged seraphs of heaven
Coveted her and me.

And this was the reason that, long ago,
In this kingdom by the sea,
A wind blew out of a cloud, chilling
My beautiful Annabel Lee;
So that her high-born kinsmen came
And bore her away from me,
To shut her up in a sepulchre
In this kingdom by the sea.

The angels, not half so happy in heaven,
Went envying her and me -
Yes! that was the reason (as all men know,
In this kingdom by the sea)
That the wind came out of the cloud one night,
Chilling and killing my Annabel Lee.

But our love it was stronger by far than the love
Of those who were older than we -
Of many far wiser than we -
And neither the angels in heaven above,
Nor the demons down under the sea,
Can ever dissever my soul from the soul
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;

For the moon never beams without bringing me dreams
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And the stars never rise but I feel the bright eyes
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side
Of my darling -my darling -my life and my bride,
In the sepulchre there by the sea -
In her tomb by the sounding sea.

Emily Dickinson

Emily Elizabeth Dickinson (December 10, 1830 â€" May 15, 1886) was an American poet. Born in Amherst, Massachusetts to a successful family with strong community ties, she lived a mostly introverted and reclusive life. After she studied at the Amherst Academy for seven years in her youth, she spent a short time at Mount Holyoke Female Seminary before returning to her family's house in Amherst. Thought of as an eccentric by the locals, she became known for her penchant for white clothing and her reluctance to greet guests or, later in life, even leave her room. Most of her friendships were therefore carried out by correspondence.

Dickinson was a prolific private poet, though fewer than a dozen of her nearly eighteen hundred poems were published during her lifetime.[1] The work that was published during her lifetime was usually altered significantly by the publishers to fit the conventional poetic rules of the time. Dickinson's poems are unique for the era in which she wrote; they contain short lines, typically lack titles, and often utilize slant rhyme as well as unconventional capitalization and punctuation.[2] Many of her poems deal with themes of death and immortality, two subjects which infused her letters to friends.

Although most of her acquaintances were probably aware of Dickinson's writing, it was not until after her death in 1886â€"when Lavinia, Emily's younger sister, discovered her cache of poemsâ€"that the breadth of Dickinson's work became apparent. Her first collection of poetry was published in 1890 by personal acquaintances Thomas Wentworth Higginson and Mabel Loomis Todd, both of whom heavily edited the content. A complete and mostly unaltered collection of her poetry became available for the first time in 1955 when The Poems of Emily Dickinson was published by scholar Thomas H. Johnson. Despite unfavorable reviews and skepticism of her literary prowess during the late 19th and early 20th century, critics now consider Dickinson to be a major American poet.[3]

Guy de Maupassant is my all time favorite short story writer.

The Necklace or The Diamond Necklace (French: La Parure) is a short story by Guy de Maupassant, first published in 1884 in the French newspaper Le Gaulois. The story has become one of Maupassant's most popular works and is well known for its twist ending. It is also the inspiration for Henry James' short story, "Paste".[citation needed]. It has been dramatised as a musical by the Irish composer Conor Mitchell First Produced professionally by Thomas Hopkins & Andrew Jenkins for Surefire Theatrical Ltd at the Edinburgh Festival in 2007 .

[edit] Plot summary

"The Necklace" tells the story of Madame Mathilde Loisel and her husband. When Mathilde was little, she always imagined herself in a high social position with wonderful jewels. However, when she grows up, she has nothing, and marries a lowly clerk who is obsessed with making her happy. Through lots of begging at work, he is able to get two invitations to the Ministry of Education's party. However, Mathilde is upset, for she has nothing to wear. Using money that he was saving to buy a gun, he lets Mathilde buy a fancy dress. However, Mathilde also wants jewels to wear. Since they don't have any money left, her husband suggests that she borrow something from her friend, Madame Forestier. Mathilde picks out the fanciest jewel necklace that she can find. However, after attending the Ministry of Education's party, Mathilde finds out that she's lost the necklace. Mathilde and her husband then have to work for ten years to come up with the thirty-four thousand francs to buy a replacement for the necklace. After losing everything, having to work, and forcing her husband to work two jobs, Mathilde sees Madame Forestier walking down the street. She decides to talk to her. After talking to her, she finds out that the necklace was a fake and only worth about five hundred francs.

William Faulkner

William Faulkner's “A Rose for Emily” was originally published in the April 30, 1930, issue of Forum. It was his first short story published in a major magazine. A slightly revised version was published in two collections of his short fiction, These 13 (1931) and Collected Stories (1950). It has been published in dozens of anthologies as well. “A Rose for Emily” is the story of an eccentric spinster, Emily Grierson. An unnamed narrator details the strange circumstances of Emily’s life and her odd relationships with her father, her lover, and the town of Jefferson, and the horrible secret she hides. The story’s subtle complexities continue to inspire critics while casual readers find it one of Faulkner’s most accessible works. The popularity of the story is due in no small part to its gruesome ending.

Plot summary

“A Rose for Emily” is a short story divided into five sections.

The first section opens with a description of the Grierson house in Jefferson. The narrator mentions that over the past 25 years, Miss Emily Grierson’s home has fallen into despair and become “an eyesore among eyesores.” The first sentence of the story sets the tone of how the citizens of Jefferson felt about Emily: “When Miss Emily Grierson died, our whole town went to the funeral: the men through a sort of respectful affection for a fallen monument, the women mostly out of curiosity to see the inside of her house, which no one save an old manservantâ€"a combined gardener and cookâ€"had seen in at least ten years.”

It is known around town that Emily Grierson has not had guests in her home for the past 8-10 years, except her Negro male servant who runs errands for her to and from the market. After Emily's father’s death, Colonel Sartoris had arranged that Miss Emily would never have to pay taxes, however, when a new council took over, they began to tax her once again. She refused to pay the taxes and appear before the sheriff, so the city authorities took it upon themselves to physically invite themselves into her house. When confronted on her tax evasion, Emily reminded them that she doesn't have to pay taxes in Jefferson and to speak to Colonel Sartoris, although he had died ten years ago.

In section two, the narrator explains that the Griersons has always been a very proud Southern family. Mr. Grierson, Emily’s father, being the proud man he was, never believed any man was suitable for his daughter and didn't allow her to date. This had a long-lasting negative effect on Emily, especially since after Mr. Grierson passed away because she was always dependent on him. After Mr. Grierson's passing, Emily did not allow the authorities to remove his body for three days, claiming he was still alive. Two years after her father’s death and her lover had left her, a strange smell started coming from the Grierson house.

In section three, Emily’s beau, Homer Barron, a foreman from the north is introduced. Homer comes to Jefferson with a crew of men to build sidewalks outside the Grierson home. After Emily and Homer were seen driving through town several times, Emily visits a druggist. There, she asked to purchase poison specifically requesting arsenic. The druggist asks what the arsenic is for since it was required of him to ask by law. Emily does not respond and stares him down with cold eyes until the druggist looks away and packs her the arsenic. When Emily opens the package, underneath the skull and bones sign is written, "For Rats."

Citizens of Jefferson believe that Miss Emily is going to commit suicide since Homer has not yet proposed in the beginning of section four. The townspeople contact and invite Emily's two cousins to comfort her. Shortly after their arrival, Homer leaves and then returns after the cousin leave Jefferson. After staying in Jefferson for one night, Homer is never seen again and is believed that Mr. Grierson’s spirit was “too virulent and too furious to die” is what drove Homer away. After Homer’s disappearance, Emily begins to age, gain weight, and is rarely seen outside of her home. Soon, Miss Emily passes away.

The fifth and final section begins with Jefferson women entering the Grierson home. After they arrive, Emily's Negro servant leaves through the back door without saying a word. After Emily's funeral, the townspeople immediately go through her house. They come across a room on the second floor which no one had seen in 40 years and breaks the door down. They discover a dusty room strangely decorated as a bridal room. A silver toilet seat which Miss Emily had purchased for Homer years before his disappearance was in the room as well as a man’s tie, suit, and shoes all neatly folded, but covered in dust. In the bed lay the remains of Homer dressed in a nightshirt. Next to him, is an impression of a head on a pillow where the townspeople find a single “long strand of iron-gray hair.” It is apparent to readers that not only had Emily killed Homer with the arsenic, but also had slept next to Homer's decaying body (necrophilia).

Papaitan Baka / Pinapaitan Baka

source: http://overseaspinoycooking.blogspot.com/2007/08/papaitan-baka-pinapaitan-baka.html

Papaitan or pinapaitan, for those who don’t know is a sampalok and bile flavored stew of tripes and innards. It is either an ox or goat. (baka or kambing). This dish is popular with those who love drinking liquor. It is one of the mainstay dish of restaurants along the h-ways if you have ever traveled up north or Ilocos country. I know a lot of people want to know how to cook this dish. Cooking is fairly simple except that it require a lot of time to get the innards to get cook to tender especially the tripes, not unless you want to use the pressure cooker but you won’t get the same tastiness with slow cooking.

When buying just ask the butcher it is for papaitan and most likely he knows what it is, so he will be giving you a set complete with diluted bile. Here in Abu Dhabi it is the meat shop way of attracting Filipino customers, by selling meat cuts the way Filipinos want. Here are some tips in cooking papaitan. Wash thoroughly. Parboil the innards with garlic and ginger for 15 minutes, discard water and rinse before slicing. Add bile small amount at a time so with sampalok. Until you get the correct sourness and bitterness.

Here is the recipe.

Ingredients:

1 k. ox tripe/innards
1/2 c. diluted ox bile
1 head whole garlic
1 thumb size ginger, crushed
2 thumb size ginger, cut into strips
1 head garlic, chopped
2 medium size onion, chopped
1 bundle spring onion, chopped
1 small packet, sampalok sinigang mix
2-3 siling labuyo, chopped
1/2 c. patis
salt and pepper

Cooking procedure:

Wash thoroughly ox innards, drain and cut into small slices, set aside liver. In a sauce pan put all innards, whole garlic and crushed ginger cover with water and boil for 15 minutes, drain and discard liquid. Rinse and add fresh water and boil for 1-2 hours or until innards are tender. Remove from pan separate broth and keep aside. In same sauce pan sauté onion, garlic and ginger. Add innards including liver stir for 3-5 minutes, add patis and cook for another 3-5 minutes. Pour in broth and simmer for 10-15 minutes, add siling labuyo, sinigang mix and goat bile (half quantity at time and taste sourness and bitterness add more if required). Simmer for another 3-5 minutes. Season with salt and pepper, garnish with spring onion. Serve hot.

GALL BLADDER STONE REMOVAL - The NATURAL Way
by Dr Lai Chiu-Nan

It has worked for many. If it works for you please pass on the good news. Chiu Nan is not charging for it, so we should make it free for everyone. Your reward is when someone, through your word of mouth, benefits from the regime.

Gallstones may not be everyone's concern. But they should be because we all have them. Moreover, gallstones may lead to cancer.

"Cancer is never the first illness," Chiu Nan points out. "Usually, there are a lot of other problems leading to cancer. In my research in China, I came across some materials, which say that people with cancer usually have stones.

We all have gallstones. It's a matter of big or small, many or few. One of the symptoms of gallstones is a feeling of bloatedness after a Heavy meal. You feel like you can't digest the food. If it gets more serious, you feel pain in the liver area." So if you think you have gallstones, Chiu Nan offers the following method to remove them naturally. The treatment is also good for those with weak liver, because the liver and gallbladder are closely linked.

Regimen:

*For the first five days, take four glasses of apple juice every day. Or eat four or five apples, whichever you prefer. Apple juice softens the gallstones. During the five days, eat normally.

*On the sixth day, take no dinner. At 6 pm, take a teaspoon of Epsom salt (magnesium sulphate) with a glass of warm water. Magnesium sulfate could be bought from the pharmacy.

* At 8 pm, repeat the same. Magnesium sulphate opens the gallbladder ducts.

* At 10 pm, take half-cup olive oil (or sesame oil) with half cup fresh lemon juice. Mix it well and drink it. The oil lubricates the stones to ease their passage.

The next morning, you will find green stones in your stools. "Usually they float," Chiu Nan notes. "You might want to count them. I have had people who pass 40, 50 or up to 100 stones. That s a lot..! "Even if you don't have any symptoms of gallstones, you still might have some. It's always good to give your gall bladder a clean up now and then .

Health Benefits

Onions, like garlic, are members of the Allium family, and both are rich in powerful sulfur-containing compounds that are responsible for their pungent odors and for many of their health-promoting effects. Onions contain allyl propyl disulphide, while garlic is rich in allicin, diallyl disulphide, diallyl trisulfide and others. In addition, onions are very rich in chromium, a trace mineral that helps cells respond to insulin, plus vitamin C, and numerous flavonoids, most notably, quercitin.

Blood Sugar-Lowering Effects

The higher the intake of onion, the lower the level of glucose found during oral or intravenous glucose tolerance tests. Experimental and clinical evidence suggests that allyl propyl disulfide is responsible for this effect and lowers blood sugar levels by increasing the amount of free insulin available. Allyl propyl disulfide does this by competing with insulin, which is also a disulphide, to occupy the sites in the liver where insulin is inactivated. This results is an increase in the amount of insulin available to usher glucose into cells causing a lowering of blood sugar.

In addition, onions are a very good source of chromium, the mineral component in glucose tolerance factor, a molecule that helps cells respond appropriately to insulin. Clinical studies of diabetics have shown that chromium can decrease fasting blood glucose levels, improve glucose tolerance, lower insulin levels, and decrease total cholesterol and triglyceride levels, while increasing good HDL-cholesterol levels. Marginal chromium deficiency is common in the United States, not surprising since chromium levels are depleted by the consumption refined sugars and white flour products as well as the lack of exercise. One cup of raw onion contains over 20% of the Daily Value for this important trace mineral.

Cardiovascular Benefits

The regular consumption of onions has, like garlic, been shown to lower high cholesterol levels and high blood pressure, both of which help prevent atherosclerosis and diabetic heart disease, and reduce the risk of heart attack or stroke. These beneficial effects are likely due to onions' sulfur compounds, its chromium and its vitamin B6, which helps prevent heart disease by lowering high homocysteine levels, another significant risk factor for heart attack and stroke.
Onions have been singled out as one of the small number of vegetables and fruits that contributed to the significant reduction in heart disease risk seen in a meta-analysis of seven prospective studies. Of the more than 100,000 individuals who participated in these studies, those who diets most frequently included onions, tea, apples and broccoli-the richest sources of flavonoids-gained a 20% reduction in their risk of heart disease.

Support Gastrointestinal Health

The regular consumption of onions, as little as two or more times per week, is associated with a significantly reduced risk of developing colon cancer. Onions contain a number of flavonoids, the most studied of which, quercitin, has been shown to halt the growth of tumors in animals and to protect colon cells from the damaging effects of certain cancer-causing substances. Cooking meats with onions may help reduce the amount of carcinogens produced when meat is cooked using high heat methods.

Quercitin, an antioxidant in onions, and curcumin, a phytonutrient found in the curry spice turmeric, reduce both the size and number of precancerous lesions in the human intestinal tract, suggests research published in Clinical Gasteroenterology and Hepatology.

Five patients with an inherited form of precancerous polyps in the lower bowel known as familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) were treated with regular doses of curcumin and quercetin over an average of six months. The average number of polyps dropped 60.4%, and the average size of the polyps that did develop dropped by 50.9%.

FAP runs in families and is characterized by the development of hundreds of polyps (colorectal adenomas) and, eventually, colon cancer. Recently, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs such as aspirin, ibuprofen) have been used to treat some patients with this condition, but these drugs often produce significant side effects, including gastrointestinal ulcerations and bleeding, according to lead researcher Francis M. Giardiello, M.D., at the Division of Gastroenterology, Johns Hopkins University.

Previous observational studies in populations that consume large amounts of curry, as well as animal research, have strongly suggested that curcumin, one of the main ingredients in Asian curries, might be effective in preventing and/or treating cancer in the lower intestine. Similarly, quercetin, an anti-oxidant flavonoid found in a variety of foods including onions, green tea and red wine, has been shown to inhibit growth of colon cancer cell lines in humans and abnormal colorectal cells in animals.

In this study, a decrease in polyp number was observed in four of five patients at three months and four of four patients at six months.

Each patient received curcumin (480 mg) and quercetin (20 mg) orally 3 times a day for 6 months. Although the amount of quercetin was similar to what many people consume daily, the curcumin consumed was more than would be provided in a typical diet because turmeric only contains on average 3-5 % curcumin by weight. While simply consuming curry and onions may not have as dramatic an effect as was produced in this study, this research clearly demonstrates that liberal use of onions and turmeric and onions can play a protective role against the development of colorectal cancer.

Onion and Garlic Protective against Many Cancers

Making onion and garlic a staple in your healthy way of eating may greatly lower your risk of several common cancers, suggests a large data set of case-control studies from Southern European populations (Galeone C, Pelucchi C et al, American Journal of Clinical Nutrition).

Study participants consuming the most onions showed an 84% reduced risk for cancer of the oral cavity and pharynx, 88% reduced risk for esophageal cancer, 56% reduced risk for colorectal cancer, 83% reduced risk for laryngeal cancer, 25% reduced risk for breast cancer, 73% reduced risk for ovarian cancer, 71% reduced risk for prostate cancer, and 38% reduced risk for renal cell cancer, compared to those eating the least onions. Similarly, those eating the most garlic had a 39% reduced risk for cancer of the oral cavity and pharynx, 57% reduced risk for esophageal cancer, 26% reduced risk for colorectal cancer, 44% reduced risk for laryngeal cancer, 10% reduced risk for breast cancer, 22% reduced risk for ovarian cancer, 19% reduced risk for prostate cancer, and 31% reduced risk for renal cell cancer, compared to those eating the least garlic.

Onions Protective against Ovarian Cancer

Research calculating flavonoid intake in 66,940 women enrolled in the Nurses Health Study between 1984 and 2002 revealed that women whose diets provided the most kaempferol had a 40% reduction in risk of ovarian cancer, compared to women eating the least kaempferol-rich foods. In addition to onions, foods richest in kaempferol include tea (nonherbal), broccoli, curly kale, leeks, spinach, and blueberries.

A significant 34% reduction in ovarian cancer risk was also seen in women with the highest intake of the flavone luteolin (found in citrus). Int J Cancer. 2007 Apr 30; Am J Clin Nutr. 2004 May;79(5):727-47.

Boost Bone Health
Milk isn't the only food that boosts bone health. Onions also help maintain healthy bones, suggests a study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.

A compound newly identified in onions with the long complex name of gamma-L-glutamyl-trans-S-1-propenyl-L-cysteine sulfoxide, GPCS, for short, inhibits the activity of osteoclasts (the cells that break down bone). The more GPCS given in this animal study, the more the bone resorptive (breakdown) action of osteoclasts was inhibited.

Onions may be especially beneficial for women, who are at increased risk for osteoporosis as they go through menopause. Fosamax (Alendronate), the drug typically prescribed to prevent excessive bone loss, works in a similar manner, by destroying osteoclasts, so they do not break down bone. Potential negative side effects of Fosamax include irritation of the upper gastrointestinal mucosa, acid regurgitation, esophageal ulcers and erosions. Potential negative side effects of eating onions: onion breath.

Anti-Inflammatory and Anti-Bacterial Activity

Several anti-inflammatory agents in onions render them helpful in reducing the severity of symptoms associated with inflammatory conditions such as the pain and swelling of osteo- and rheumatoid arthritis, the allergic inflammatory response of asthma, and the respiratory congestion associated with the common cold. Both onions and garlic contain compounds that inhibit lipoxygenase and cyclooxygenase (the enzymes that generate inflammatory prostaglandins and thromboxanes), thus markedly reducing inflammation. Onions' anti-inflammatory effects are due not only to their vitamin C and quercitin, but to other active components called isothiocyanates. These compounds work synergistically to spell relief from inflammation. In addition, quercitin and other flavonoids found in onions work with vitamin C to help kill harmful bacteria, making onions an especially good addition to soups and stews during cold and flu season.
