The usage is the same in English Grazie.

Formal English would suggest that you use Ms., even if the woman is married when you are singularly addressing her.

You can only use Mrs., when you address a couple, say, Mr. and Mrs.

That is I think, the logic of the usage of Frau.

Used for both single and married.

When you toast using a bottle in Germany, you toast on the "boden" (the lowest part of the bottle).

i've read in another forum about the victim---
and i posted it here for confirmation---
and those who knew the victim cleared her name
by explaining, through this thread, about the real score.

something was being posted here by someone about one
of those who were dragged by the suspect
and those who knew the guy replied and explained
(in behalf of the guy whose name was being dragged)

so, i guess, there is no need to close this thread

Could you even verify the personalities in this thread?  Do  you know them by their real names? I guess not.

If I were like for example, a friend of the culprit and would give wrong information,
would it help you?

Just a thought.

I mean no offense to people who wants to keep updated about the development of the case, but again, the forum is not a reliable source.

Sources in forums like this is not reliable.  Our personalities here are anonymous.  If one comes, telling inaccurate information, that would create confusion.

The reason for media block out is to avoid sensationalizing the case.  The media, "hungry" for news, is not a reliable source of  evidence.  Even , as you noticed, news are told differently in any media organisation, and most importantly, news change from time to time.

Testimonies, and physical evidences presented in court are the reliable ones.

A very important consideration in criminal law, is the presumption of innocence.  A man is innocent until proven otherwise.  In forums like these, we condemn a person without due process.  "Due process" is only carried out in courts, not in forums.

Here, we end up doing a chizmis because our sources are not reliable.

peace. and please dont get me wrong, i dont know the victim , nor the suspect.

Who in the entire world is charged of contempt of court because he was protesting against abortion?
Who in the entire world, uses colloquial license as an excuse, to mend up obvious grammatical and logical error?
Who in the entire world, picks up cases from nowhere, just because the claim of the defendant, is that he was only exercising his right to self expression even if he was actually invading privacy rights and such a case has even no bearing to the discussion on religion and the freedom of expression (as one expresses his political and social views on religion)?

#350
Would 'nt it be better should you guys who knows the victim personally or by reputation would only open a thread in her memory?

Gossips/hearsay in the net, would not solve crimes. It is considered hearsay in court if the information is not first hand which is not acceptable under the rules of evidence. If there is one of you who is a witness, go to the proper authorities, the net would only just create confusion. It is  not the proper venue.  We end up doing chizmis.

Let us respect the victim by closing this thread.  only a suggestion.

Additionally, only when The IAEA find out if our country is not violating any safety or environmental standards related to nuclear power generation, then and only then BNPP is viable.

#354
Monday, 02 February 2009 MANILA, Philippinesâ€"For making the public choose between paying more for power generation that they do not need to begin with, and tolerating misplaced priorities where debt service supersedes social welfare, the Freedom from Debt Coalition (FDC) today urged Congress to stop the planned rehabilitation, re-commission and commercial operation of the controversial Bataan Nuclear Power Plant.

“This ‘Monster of Morong’ is a symbol of the Philippines’ struggle against a debt-driven development strategy â€" often peppered with rent seeking and cronyism â€" that different administrations, including the current disposition, have espoused,” said the group’s vice president, former Akbayan (Citizens Action Party) Rep. Etta Rosales.

“To revive the BNPP would be to create greater social deficits and push the Filipino people deeper into the vicious debt and underdevelopment trap,” said Rosales. “To make the BNPP operational would be to gamble away the people’s lives on a lost deal.”

Over-projection

In a position paper submitted to the members of House Committees on Energy and Appropriations, the advocacy group questioned the projection of an impending power shortage, stressing the government’s track record in forecasting electricity as “self serving at worst and dismally inaccurate at best.”

“First and foremost, where are the studies that support this claim of an impending power shortage?” asked Rosales.

To prove that the government’s projections are founded on “faulty rationales,” FDC cited the 1993 Power Development Plan by the Ramos administration projecting a 10 percent annual growth rate in demand for electricity over the next 10 years.

“This steep growth in demand failed to materialize, based on DoE (Department of Energy) data. Aside from that, data show that installed capacity and dependable capacity of generation plants had been greater than demand for the period of 1990-2001, except in 1993 when the country was hit with El Nino that had crippled the hydroelectric plants in Mindanao,” Rosales explained.

Another instance of wrong government forecasts is the Visayas experience, where a citizens’ initiative towards a Multi-Stakeholder Power Development Plan (MSPDP) for Panay was launched, according to FDC.

“While the DoE initially stayed away from this initiative, it has recently recognized this bottom-up planning approach and is now supporting a broadened exercise for Western Visayas. A comparison of DoE projections of demand growth for Western Visayas, and that of the MSPDP shows the latter to be closer to actual demand,” the group said.

Pangasinan Rep. Mark Cojuangco, principal author of the "Bataan Nuclear Power Plant Commissioning Act of 2008,” trumpeted that the BNPP is expected to supply at least 20 percent of the anticipated power shortage before 2012 of 3,000MW.

FDC said that over-projecting demand has led to an overcapacity situation in the Philippine electricity sector for more than a decade now, and this has been proven to be as expensive â€" if not more â€" than a power shortage.

“As of April 2008, DoE data show that total installed generating capacity on a national level is 15,937.1 MW. Of this, 83 percent or 13,205 MW is said to be dependable capacity. Peak demand is only 8,999 MW, which gives an excess generating capacity of 4,212 MW. This 4,212 MW is the dead weight loss to the Filipino consumers, mostly households, who must pay for the excess capacity even if the plants are idle, thanks to the ‘take or pay’ clause in the contracts the Ramos government signed with the independent power producers (IPPs),” the group said.

Base load

Citing a study by Prof. Rowaldo Del Mundo of the National Engineering Center in the University of the Philippines, FDC said that in Luzon alone, 85 percent of base load, or the minimum demand for power given any time of day, within the Meralco franchise area comes only from 3 major power plants, even as there are a total number of 55 power generation facilities in Luzon.

“Reviving the BNPP at this time when the base load can only be seen to be shrinking, given the current global economic crisis, is grossly imprudent,” the group said.

Industrial plan

“Even if the government would defend this projected increase in demand, we ask: Where is the industrialization plan that must necessarily be the basis of this anticipated growth in demand? And, should there be additional demand as projected by the government, what convinces us that this additional demand cannot be met by the combined dependable capacities of all generation plants, much less if all these plants were actually pushed closer to its installed capacity?” FDC asked.

FDC emphasized that the biggest driver for electricity demand increases is an industrializing base of the economy.

“The Philippine domestic economy is not on industrialization mode but is actually service sector driven. Moreover, in times of economic crises when companies are closing plants, shortening operating hours, or laying off workers, a corollary contraction in electricity demand is expected. And as the crisis is expected to last until 2011, at the most generous projections, the alleged need for increased generating capacity is thus eliminated,” the group said.

The only possible justification specific to the operations of a nuclear power plant is to meet an increase in base load, or replace existing base load supply. An increase in base load is highly unlikely in times of economic crisis, the group said.

“However, it is a much worse option to replace existing base load supply as the current generators to meet such demands are the environmentally safe geothermal and hydroelectric power plants that are very much necessary in times of a climate crisis,” FDC said.

More wasteful, useless debt

FDC also questioned the proposal to raise equity up to $1 billion, through a surcharge of 10 centavos/kWh of the total electric power generated or international or domestic loan agreements, under Section 22 of the substitute House Bill.

“Is the government making the public choose, or is this a question of being caught between the devil and the deep blue sea? They make us pay more for the increased electricity surcharge, while debt service is prioritized over social services,” Rosales said.

FDC claimed that nowhere in this world has the re-construction of nuclear power facilities been right on schedule and on budget.

“After being mothballed for over 20 years, the BNPP will more likely need more than the projected $1 billion to meet the technical and safety demands of a fully operational and nuclear meltdown â€" safe structure â€" and this, without factoring in the monumental costs of corruption and bribery that the BNPP itself represents, and the current administration has mastered,” FDC said.

Moreover, nuclear power plant operations will necessitate government financial support, particularly when we factor in buying and safely transporting the highly expensive and toxic uranium ore needed for the functioning of a nuclear power plant, the group said.

“As is the experience in Japan, without government subsidies, no self-respecting, profit-oriented enterprise will undertake the project mainly because of the exorbitant price for operations. Can the Philippines afford to subsidize a project with this level of danger and expense? To subsidize the generation costs and mandate the payment of a 10 centavos/kWh surcharge, or to bring the public deeper into debt and charge them exorbitant rates for the energy they will consume, the government will be pushing the people into a deeper level of economic and financial crisis,” FDC said.

There was nothing that is incorrect because I did not claim anything. I was just pointing out that you were contradicting yourself in saying that america is a conservatice country when in fact, abortion as you have mentioned, (not me) is legal in Oakland.  I dont even know this. hehehe

If the pastor, was only protesting in the right avenue- in fron of the city council,  in main city streets, then he could not have faced lawsuit then he could invoke freedom of self expression.

But to do it, few meters, feet away from the abortion clinic.  This was a pure manifestion of an intrusion of private rights.

Lorenzo,

Was there any class attack because of the comment " Religion flies you into buildings"?  Christianity is even no exception to this.  Neither did the commenter gave praises to Christianity.  It was a general observation Lorenzo. Let me reiterate and I emphasize.... The purported intention of the commenter was to mock religion in general, which caused people to harm. it just so happen that the muslim extremist bombed the twin towers. if it were Christian conservatives , nothing will be changed about the comment.

If I say, ideological, racial fanatiscm and the hunger for power cause people to kill millions of ethnic minorities, would it be racially discriminating for the germans?  I think not.

If I say, religion perpetuated child molestation, would this be an insult to Catholiscm? I guess not.

Both cases cannot be compared with each other, just only because they both invoke the freedom of self expression.

The pastors protest was an intrusion of private rights, the comment on " Religion flies you into buildings", is a general opinion on how religion could be an instrument for violence.
#374
General Topic / Re: Are You Atheist?
March 06, 2009, 09:29:11 AM
Let me take the merits of both case point by point.

1.  The pastor's protest was an intrusion of private rights, the comment on" religion flies you into buildings"  does not intrude private rights.

2.  "Religion flies you into buildings" is an expression of strong disgust on how religion has become the root cause of war , trouble, misery..  The commenter was safe of religious discrimination, because he did not point out any religious sect.  If the comment was, "Religion placed children at danger.", would the catholic church dare to react on this?  I guess not.

3.  The pastor, was in fact using a religious sect, to lobby his protest invoking the Judeo -Christian dogma of "pro-life". ( which is actually legal)

4.  The pastor was few feet, meter away from the abortion clinic.  His protests were purely intended to harass private persons.

This is how liberal your laws in the US are Lorenzo.  Abortion is even legal.  This contradicts your view that US is a conservative society.

Your case about the pastor is even irrelevant.

Let us stick to the main proposition Lorenzo.  You have mentioned that this comment " Religion flies you into buildings" would land you in american jails.

How in any case, you would connect this comment to the case cited by glacier?

hahaha.. The right to self expression?

This is entirely differently. Did he abuse private rights when he made this comment (religion flies you into buildings)? I think not.

Just simple logic would lead you to a better answer Lorenzo and besides, should you have sought legal advice, then you should not have posted that case here, and just directly ask a lawyer, right?

Hahaha..

This cannot be cited as a freedom of expression Lorenzo.  He was putting people to shame.

This case has nothing to do with the previous topic on religious discrimination.

No, you do not get the point Lorenzo.

Why he was  jailed?  This was because of obstruction and instrusion of private rights.

If someone out there, who wanted to make abortion secretly (which is aparrently legal in that place ), such protest action is an invasion of their private rights.

Tell the the merits of the case.

The case actually contradicted your claim lorenzo.

That pastor should have placed his protest in the right avenue, that is, protesting in front of the city council, which was legalizing abortion.

That was an instrusion of private rights.

That was invoking religious doctrines, in a non-secular case.

hehehe

Have you even analyzed the story very well?  He was of course jailed because he was using his religious affiliation as a sign of his expression against abortion?

Where is religious discrimination there? huh?

LOL.  Yes Lorenzo, ordinance is ordinance.  If abortion maybe legal there, obstructing someone to commt such is punishable by the law.

Just take this as an example.  When it is legal to buy pott in amsterdam, protesting infront of a pott house would surely land you in jail.

Really funny anaylsis you have.

Let me make my point simple Lorenzo.  If I say that religion is the root cause of war, would that bring me to jail? I guess not.

If someone say, that it was because of religion why the twin towers were bomb, it is a crime?
I guess not.

Religion flies you into buildings implies that religion causes people to be harmful.

Important to the realization of real democracy is the right to self expression.  In this case, it is an opinion expressed on a bus. Malicious or not, it maybe a fundamentalist view, but it is a view. This could be interpreted colloqiually, as what you often do. The same as we allow Muslims to criticize our Christ. The same, as other Christian denomination call our Blessed Virgin Mary, a pagan goddess. Our society is very varied and dynamic composed of sectors with different political and social framework.

If you call a muslim a terrorist, he would sue you, not of religious discrimination, but of libel or oral defamation.

I have not read any case, in Supreme court precedings having successful cases like this.

The statement maybe suggesting, but it is an opinion.  Same as Muslims, stepping on american flags.

You were referring to hate speech law ( which is commonly practiced in the media), but this statement "Religion flies you into buildings!" is not a hate speech.

(a) The right to freedom of expression and opinions

The right to freedom of expression upholds the rights of all to express their views and opinions freely. It is essentially a right which should be promoted to the maximum extent possible given its critical role in democracy and public participation in political life. There may be certain extreme forms of expression which need to be curtailed for the protection of other human rights. Limiting freedom of expression in such situations is always a fine balancing act. One particular form of expression which is banned in some countries is “hate speech”.

There may be some views which incite intolerance or hatred between groups. This raises the debate about whether such hate speech, as it is known, should be restricted. An extreme example of this is the use of the mass media to promote genocide or racially-motivated attacks, such as the role played by Radio-Télévision Libre des Milles Collines in the Rwandan genocide in 1994. In some countries hate speech laws have been introduced to outlaw such expression. There is a fine balance between upholding the right to freedom of expression and protecting other human rights. The success of such laws has often been questionable and one of the consequences has been to drive hate speech underground. While it may be necessary to ban certain extreme forms of hate speech and certainly to make its use by the state prohibited, parallel measures involving the promotion of a pluralistic media are essential to give voice to counter viewpoints.

What was the decision of the court?

Religious discrimination is valuing or treating a person or group differently because of what they do or do not believe.

It may have malice, but still it depends on the person interpreting it.  The court does not consider ambigous statements.

Remember Lorenzo.  The right to self expression is equally important in the states.  Flags are burned but no lawsuits are filed.  A caricature of Mohammad is punned in Denmark ( a democratic country) but no lawsuit was filed.  An artist in Austria made a mockery of the last suffer as an expression of his protest against the catholic church, but no lawsuit was filed.

But if you say that the Holocaust did not happened, then you will be jailed in Germany

The right to religious freedom is one of the most important civil liberties, in the US and in any democratic country.  Implied to religious freedom, is the freedom not to believe.  This is why atheism is legal.

Important consideration is the separation of the Church and of the State.  If some funds of the government are specifically alloted for a specific religious sector, this is religious discrimination.

Which statement? "Religion flies you into buildings?"
I think not.  This is non-specific of a religious sector.  This is only an atheistic opinion which does not discriminate any religion, religious practice, etc.

Quote from: Lorenzo on March 06, 2009, 04:27:34 AM
Roy, there was a conference of Muslim Individuals in Canada, and whn the Muslim-Americans were detained and asked questions for their involvement in said conference, the organization sued the US Department of Homeland Security for violating religious freedom and rights.

I read this several months ago.

This is a totally different case Lorenzo.  This is a clear violation of the right to religious freedom.  Necessary to this right, is the exercise of functions to express religious activities ( in this case, a religious conference),
