by EDCOM -
Philippine Consul General, Her Excellency Esmeralda Agbulos, has expressed her ardent desire to revisit Bohol.

This she specifically talked about in her letter to Gov. Edgar M. Chatto telling the latter of her group’s impending visit to the province together with people from Edmonton, Canada who are very excited to see the world-renowned province that has earned worldwide acclaim in the field of tourism.

Tagged as the 2012 Ambassadors and General Tour which is scheduled on July 11-15 this year, Agbulos said that their visit’s highlight would be their meeting with Gov. Chatto and wife Pureza.

“It was a pleasure to have met you in Edmonton. I would like to take this chance to visit you and Mrs. Chatto, our meeting which will be the highlight of the tour,” Agbulos stressed in her letter.

“I am encouraging them (members of her entourage) to visit the beautiful Bohol before the tour. I have been telling them about beautiful sights and hospitality of the Boholanos. I have excellent memories from my visit there,” Agbulos happily pointed out in her letter.

The governor has already sent word that the Provincial Government of Bohol (PGBh) would be delighted to have Consul Agbulos’ team here to interact with the Boholanos.

Although there’s no doubt that Bohol is already in the World Tourism Map, “more people coming in from all parts of the world would be most welcome, Chatto said.

“But what is more inspiring is when people in big positions express their desire not only to come to Bohol but also to promote the province as a prime tourist destination worthy of serious promotion, globally,” Chatto added with more optimism. (jlv/EDCom)

by Rey Anthony Chiu - Bohol lifting coach Samuel Alegada proved Bohol can be a heavy contender in the national weightlifting scene when the homegrown weightlifters snatched a total of 6 gold medals, 4 silver and 4 bronze medals in the recent Philippine National games in Dumaguete City.

Bohol Weightlifting Team (BWT) jerked a dynamic start with Elien Rose Perez lifting two gold medals in the 44 kilogram women and 44 kilogram weight women secondary categories.

As if that was not enough, Febie Mae Moral made a clean snatch in the 69 kilograms women category while Samjon Alegada fixed an overhead claim for gold at Men’s Age Group B, 42 kilogram category on May 30, the first day of the competitions.

Gold still came dropping for BWT on the second day of lifting competitions with Reynald Pep Agosto who picked the 65 kilogram men’s Junior category while his brother Richard Pep Agosto booked the gold for the 105 kilogram mens’ open category May 31.

At the PNG held May 26 to June 3, Bohol WT also pocketed 4 silver medals and 4 more bronze medals even as weightlifting is not as popular here as other competitive sports.

Governor Edgar Chatto, at one time presented the Boholano winners to the public during his weekly Kita ug ang Gobernador media forum a week after the competitions.

Boholano silver medal winners in the competition include Joseph Asa for the men’s open 62 kgs category, Elie Perez Jr. picked home 2 silver medals for youth and secondary men’s 50 kgs category while Jonasam P. Alegada convinced the judges to grant Bohol WT another silver medal for age group 40 kgs category.

Settling for the bronze medals in the two day weightlifting competitions are Sharlyn Baleros (2 Bronze medals for youth and secondary 48 kgs category, Ma. Paula Lanit, (1 Bronze medal for the secondary 40 kgs category) and Kent Estorosas claimed 1 bronze for the junior 77 kgs category.

Bohol olympian coach Samuel Alegada said he has long believed the Boholano potential for weightlifting and pursues a weight-training program to better train promising athletes of the tricks.

Alegada, who coaches with wife Jona pools the athletes who are now representing different Tagbilaran City Schools in local competitions.

How To Tips / Advantages of using cover crops
July 11, 2012, 06:06:02 AM
The advantages of using cover crops are impressive:

They add organic matter to the soil. By adding this matter to the soil, you improve water retention, aeration, and drainage.

They prevent erosion. Cover crops prevent erosion by holding soil in place in windy or wet areas.

They loosen compacted soils. Certain cover crops, such as oilseed radish and bell beans, have aggressive taproots (roots that grow deeply into the soil), sometimes reaching 3 feet deep, that help break up compacted soils.

They add nutrients to the soil. Legume cover crops, such as hairy vetch and crimson clover, through a symbiotic relationship (I scratch your back, you scratch mine) with rhizobium bacteria on their roots, convert atmospheric nitrogen into a type that they can use to grow. The process is called nitrogen fixing (see Chapter 7 for more on this relationship). When the cover crop is tilled into the soil, the nitrogen is released for the next crop. Also, taprooted cover crops bring minerals to the surface from deep below the soil.

They help control weeds. Cover crops control weeds by shading the weed seeds so they can't grow or by just being more aggressive than the weeds. Some crops, such as buckwheat, actually exude chemicals that inhibit weed growth.

They attract beneficial insects. Many cover crops attract good bugs that prey on garden pests, reducing insect problems on your vegetables.

How To Tips / Planting by the Phases of the Moon
July 11, 2012, 06:04:22 AM
Planting by the Phases of the Moon

Planting by the phases of the moon isn't just a New Age technique. It actually has been used for eons by many ancient farmers and gardeners. They noticed that certain vegetables perform better when planted during different moon phases. The planting seasons don't really change, but planting dates during those seasons become very important.

Here's how moon gardening works: If you divide the 28-day moon cycle (from the new moon to the full moon and back to the new moon) into quarters, as any calendar does, certain quarters are thought to be better than others for planting specific vegetables. The following list gives you an idea of what to plant when, according to the moon cycle:

The first quarter, when the moon goes from new moon (invisible) to a quarter visible, is thought to be best for planting asparagus, lettuce, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, and other vegetables that produce their seeds on parts of the plant that aren't eaten.

The second quarter, when the moon goes from half to full, is best for planting vegetables in which the seeds are eaten, such as beans, tomatoes, peppers, and squash.

The third quarter, as the moon moves from full back to half again, is best for planting root crops such as beets, carrots, potatoes, radishes, and turnips.

The last quarter, when the moon goes from half to invisible, is not thought of as a good planting time. Instead, it's a time to prepare the soil and rid the garden of pests and weeds.

Yet another way to ensure a constant harvest of vegetables is to plant using the square foot method. This method is for the mathematically inclined (even though you don't need an A in calculus to use it). You select a 4-foot-by-4-foot section of your garden and divide it into 16 squares (each section is 1 square foot). Each square will have a different number of plants, depending on what you're growing:

1 plant per square: Tomatoes, peppers, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, eggplant, corn, melon, squash

4 plants per square: Lettuce, garlic, Swiss chard

8 plants per square: Pole beans, peas, spinach

16 plants per square: Beets, carrots, radishes, onions

By planting so few plants, you'll have many small harvests, and you can easily make more succession plantings and rotate plantings each year.
#29810
The length of your planting season will determine how many successive plantings you can make and how successful the later plantings are. Depending on the weather, some of your later plantings may not yield well, but that's another reason to plant a number of plantings through the season: you're sure to get some of every type of veggie.

Another way to use succession planting is to replace a crop that's finished producing with a new one in the same place. With this method, you can grow more and a wider variety of vegetables in a small space. Just make sure you're planting a cool-season veggie for spring or fall and a warm-season veggie for summer. Table 16-1 lists some good succession planting combinations to try.
#29811
Making Your Garden Work Double Time with Intercropping

Intercropping is a space-saving technique in which you grow fast-maturing, smaller crops among slower-growing, larger vegetables. By the time the bigger plants start to take over, you have already harvested the crops in between. Intercropping makes one bed as productive as two.

tip.eps The best crops for intercropping include beets, carrots, lettuce, onions, radishes, spinach, and turnips. Use these examples to help you decide how to do it:

Plant lettuce, carrots, or radishes among young tomatoes and broccoli. For that matter, plant carrots and radishes wherever you have open space.

Plant turnips and other root crops among your cabbage.

Plant spinach or lettuce under your bean trellis. As the weather warms, the beans will shade the spinach and keep it cool.

Plant green onions between rows of corn.
#29812
Succession Planting for an Extended Harvest

Succession planting is a method of extending the harvest of vegetables, such as radishes and corn, that ripen all at once and lose quality if left in the garden instead of being harvested. Farmers use the technique to ensure a constant supply of vegetables to take to market; you can use it to produce a consistent supply of vegetables to take to your table. To succession plant, you simply make smaller plantings separated by 2 to 3 weeks instead of planting everything at once. Some great crops to succession plant are lettuce and greens, bush beans, beets, carrots, onions, radish, spinach, and sweet corn.

How To Tips / Plants That Repel Pests
July 11, 2012, 05:54:45 AM
These plants are thought to repel specific pests; plant them near crops where these pests are a common problem:

Anise planted among members of the cabbage family (cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, and so on) is said to repel imported cabbage worms.

Basil is said to repel whiteflies, aphids, and spider mites; it's a good companion to tomatoes because these are insects that feed on tomato plants.

Catnip is said to repel some types of aphids, flea beetles, squash bugs, and cucumber beetles.

Garlic may repel nematodes and other soil insects.

Leeks are thought to repel carrot flies.

Marigolds planted around vegetables are said to repel root nematodes, Mexican bean beetles, and Colorado potato beetles.

Mustard greens are supposed to repel aphids.

Nasturtiums are said to repel Colorado potato beetles.

Radishes may repel striped cucumber beetles.

Ryegrass may repel root-knot nematodes.

Southernwood may repel moths and flea beetles.

Tansy is supposed to repel some aphids, squash bugs, and Colorado potato beetles as well as ants.

White clover may repel cabbage root flies.

Wormwood may repel flea beetles.

World Daily News / U.S.-led sanctions against Iran
July 10, 2012, 08:46:46 PM
By Reva Bhalla

Over the past week, the latest phase of U.S.-led sanctions against Iran has dominated the media. For months, the United States has pressured countries to curtail their imports of Iranian crude oil and is now threatening to penalize banks that participate in oil deals with Iran. In keeping with the U.S. sanctions campaign, the European Union on July 1 implemented an oil embargo against Iran. The bloc already has begun banning European countries from reinsuring tankers carrying Iranian oil.

On the surface, the sanctions appear tantamount to the United States and its allies serving an economic death sentence to the Iranian regime. Indeed, sanctions lobbyists and journalists have painted a dire picture of hyperinflation and plummeting oil revenues. They argue that sanctions are depriving Tehran of resources that otherwise would be allocated to Iran's nuclear weapons program. This narrative also tells of the Iranian regime's fear of economically frustrated youths daring to revive the Green Movement to pressure the regime at its weakest point.

by PNA - Manila will soon be just an hour away from San Jose, Antique as Cebu-based Midsea Express, a new airline company, commits to serve the Manila-San Jose, Antique route and vice versa starting August 2012.

Antique Vice Gov. Rosie Dimamay said Glenn Lamela, head of the Commercial Services Dept. of the airline, visited Antique last week.

Lamela inspected the facilities of Evelio B. Javier Airport in the capital town and discussed with the provincial government his firm's commitment to help the Antiqueños.

Dimamay said details of the airline’s operations in Antique like flight schedules will be finalized in their next meeting.

Dimamay said: “One thing is certain, Midsea Express has committed to serve the Antiqueños and this will definitely be a big boost to the economy of the province.

"Our people will no longer have to endure the more than two hours drive to Santa Barbara, Iloilo to have a comfortable, faster and more convenient travel because we will now have an airplane that will depart and arrive right here in the capital town.”

According to Lamela, a 19-seater Jetstream, a sophisticated British Aerospace aircraft, will fly the Manila-San Jose, Antique route.

Lamela added Midsea Express will also expand its services and will soon fly Iloilo-Puerto Princesa, Palawan to cater to the growing number of businessmen and tourists.

How To Tips / TV No. 1 Cause of Children Obesity
July 09, 2012, 11:07:43 AM
by PLR Source -

Research and studies show that our children are growing fatter by the day. Many families all over America are struggling to keep the weight of their children within reasonable limits. As a parent, I know that it's nearly impossible for me to look into the tear-filled eyes of my son and refuse food.

So, what's the alternative? Studies show that the number one reason for obesity in children is not junk food and colas. It's actually TV.

Children tend to plop themselves on the sofa and munch away happily when they are in front of the TV sets. But, once the set is off, their natural buoyancy will lead the children to do stuff and to move their body. They will then be diverted from eating.

Recreational after school activities are a must if you feel that your child is beginning to put on undesirable fat. It is better to begin these activities as early as possible. The more weight the child gains, the harder he has to work to shed it. Football, swimming, skating and Karate
are just some activities he can participate in. Structured and disciplined exercise is possible only when one is put into a formal environment. That is why an overweight child simply HAS to be put into an after school program of this kind.
#29881
Public Article Source:

After school activities are the rage of the day. With about $500 million invested in these programs and more than 10 million children attending them in America alone, the popularity of these activities cannot be overlooked. Everyone understands the need to develop new skills, gain more knowledge and keep the children safe when parents are working.

The most important factor in the success of any program is the relationship between the children participating in the program and the adult members who work with these children. Often, children may confide in an adult member who is not a teacher. This kind of emotional interaction is a must when children are struggling to make sense of the whirlpool of
emotions that assail them.

Direct contact with professionals can be an inspiring experience. Children are very much impressed by the knowledge and experience of these adults. Young people gain a lot of knowledge and experience when they deal with experienced adults and older youth who serve as teachers or mentors in these programs. These mentors are different from the teachers in the school and children are more likely to draw inspiration from them.

After school activities that are managed professionally by people who are successful in their own fields of expertise will produce children who are more enthusiastic and successful. Meaningful interaction with adults is a learning experience in itself.

How To Tips / After School Activities Tips
July 09, 2012, 10:53:46 AM
After school activities and burnout

For millions of parents around the world, the day does not end with the school bell. There are still pictures to be painted, songs to be sung and games to be played. This all adds up to keeping children happy, safe and out of trouble. But, parents have to steer away from going overboard.

After school is not baby-sitting:

After school activities thrive only if it is backed by sufficient parental involvement. What would a soccer match be without parents cheering their little heroes from the sidelines?.

Research and choose:
Instead of convenience being the decisive factor, find out things that will interest your child. Once you select a program, get the fine print and find out what you have to contribute.

Free time:
Many children attend piano classes, followed by ballet and squeeze in some time for play dates in between just before they rush home in time for bed. This rigor is too much for a child. So, go slow.

When to quit:
Often, parents enroll their child in an activity to discover that he may not be the prodigy they thought he would be. This is the time to let go. Your child may not become the next wonder-kid. But, let him cultivate an interest that he enjoys. Remember, happiness and fulfillment are all that matter.
