Scantily dressed eunuch carrying a weapon keeps an eye on a harem in Tunis, Tunisia, 1931

Eunuchs would probably be servants or slaves who, because of their function, had been castrated, usually in order to make them reliable servants of a royal court where physical access to the ruler could wield great influence.

Seemingly lowly domestic functionsâ€"such as making the ruler's bed, bathing him, cutting his hair, carrying him in his litter, or even relaying messagesâ€"could in theory give a eunuch "the ruler's ear" and impart de facto power on the formally humble but trusted servant.  Similar instances are reflected in the humble origins and etymology of many high offices (e.g., chancellor originally denoted a servant guarding the entrance to an official's study).

Eunuchs supposedly did not generally have loyalties to the military, the aristocracy, nor to a family of their own (having neither offspring nor in-laws, at the very least), and were thus seen as more trustworthy and less interested in establishing a private 'dynasty'.  Because their condition usually lowered their social status, they could also be easily replaced or killed without repercussion.

In cultures that had both harems and eunuchs, eunuchs were sometimes used as harem servants (compare the female odalisque) or seraglio guards. (wikipedia)

A eunuch is a person who (by the common definition of the term eunuch) may have been castrated, typically early enough in his life for this change to have major hormonal consequences.  Less commonly, in translations of ancient texts, "eunuch" may refer to a man who is not castrated but who is impotent, celibate or otherwise not inclined to marry and procreate.

Castration was typically carried out on the soon-to-be eunuch without his consent in order that he might perform a specific social function; this was common in many societies.  The earliest records for intentional castration to produce eunuchs are from the Sumerian city of Lagash in the 21st century BC.  Over the millennia since, they have performed a wide variety of functions in many different cultures: courtiers or equivalent domestics, treble singers, religious specialists, government officials and guardians of women or harem servants. (wikipedia)

Previous studies have shown female mammals generally live longer than males, and one explanation is that testosterone weakens the immune system and can increase the chances of heart disease.

Scientists have also found that castration typically prolongs lifespan in animals but studies on people have been inconclusive.

While data on mentally ill, institutionalized men showed them living longer, the lifespan of castrato singers was not significantly different from their non-castrated counterparts.

The study was published in the journal Current Biology. â€" Reuters

Employed through history as guards or servants in harems across the Middle East and Asia, eunuchs in the Chosun court were allowed to marry and had families through adoption.

Kyung-Jin Min of Inha University and Cheol-Koo Lee of Korea University believe the longevity of the eunuchs was not simply attributable to their privileged lifestyle.

"Except for a few eunuchs, most lived outside the palace and spent time inside the palace only when they were on duty," Min told Reuters.

In contrast, the average lifespan of the kings, who spent their whole lives inside the palace, was just 47 years.

The ultimate trade-off: eunuchs live longer

REUTERS
September 25, 2012

LONDON - A study of eunuchs in Korea's royal court has found men without testicles live longer.

Researchers looking at the court of the Chosun Dynasty found eunuchs lived to 70 on average, or 14 to 19 years longer than "intact" men of similar socio-economic status.

Three of the 81 eunuchs studied lived to 100 or more, giving the group a centenarian rate some 130 times that in developed nations today.

During the dynasty, which ran from 1392 to 1910, boys in Korea sometimes underwent castration in order to serve as eunuchs and gain access to the privileged life of the palace.

- completely missing the Sydney Opera House, one of Sydney’s most iconic landmarks

"When you zoom out from Leyte, Philippines half of the island disappears and splits into about six islands! If you zoom out more, the island reconstitutes once Mindanao and Luzon come into view!" remarked tech site Mashable, which featured the glitch.

This was only one of several problems bugging iOS 6 Maps, which replaces Google Maps in Apple's latest OS for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.

Not even the Philippines was spared from glitches in the supposedly updated Maps for iOS 6, Apple Inc.'s newest operating system for mobile devices.

In iOS 6 Maps, the entire Leyte province in Eastern Visayas â€"a whole island seven times bigger than Manhattan Island in the USâ€" tends to disappear and split into six fragments, as shown in a screenshot on Tumblr.

haw haw de karabaw...

additional enrile words for trillanes:

fifth column, noun

A fifth column is a group of people who clandestinely undermine a larger group, such as a nation, from within.  A fifth column can be a group of secret sympathizers of an enemy that are involved in sabotage within military defense lines, or a country's borders.  A key tactic of the fifth column is the secret introduction of supporters into the whole fabric of the entity under attack.  This clandestine infiltration is especially effective with positions concerning national policy and defense.  From influential positions like these, fifth column tactics can be effectively utilized, from stoking fears through misinformation campaigns, to traditional techniques like espionage.

Origin

Emilio Mola, a Nationalist General during the Spanish Civil War, told a journalist in 1936 that as his four columns of troops approached Madrid, a "fifth column" of supporters inside the city would support him and undermine the Republican government from within.  The term was then widely used in Spain.  Ernest Hemingway used it as the title of his only play, which he wrote in Madrid while the city was being bombarded and published in 1938 in his book The Fifth Column and the First Forty-Nine Stories.

who was called that by a senate president

anyone missing him may call or text #...

yes, i'm looking for the owner of this kitten.  i know he is housebroken because he is not afraid of humans.  i found him in an unused office room in the building.  the owner must be somewhere here.  any owner will do, actually.  i prefer a japanese owner.  i'm biased against chinese and korean owners (not all, please) because some may look at cats and dogs as potential food.  i hope i don't sound culturally inept here, but if i do, then so be it.

i'm done with that now.  i'm still not stress-free nor work-free, of course.  but this time i have no shouting boss.  and i do things in my own good time.  for any stress now?  i tb or i sleep or i pick the cat up and let it sit on my lap.

And now, courtesy of our legislators, the same form of harassment is available to torment those who produce online content. That means, literally, tens of millions of Filipinos, made vulnerable in one fell swoop.

Last year, the United Nations Human Rights Committee found that the Philippine libel law, which penalizes those convicted with imprisonment, violates human rights protocols. All of a sudden, it now runs afoul of Internet protocols, too.

http://opinion.inquirer.net/
#29624
at the end part of this editorial...

We note that, in the penalties section, no sanctions are imposed on cyber-libel. Did our legislators think that was enough of a safeguard? But the journalism profession’s sorry experience with libel law in the Philippines has never been about conviction; it has always been about prosecution.

In other words, and even though libel suits are difficult to win because the presence of malice, a requirement of the law, is hard to prove, libel cases are filed against journalists anywayâ€"because these cases are a form of harassment. They tie up a reporter’s time, they run up an editor’s legal fees, they discombobulate a newsroom.
#29625
Whatever the case, the burden of responsibilityâ€"and it is a heavy one, with historical consequencesâ€"remains with the legislators who voted for the new law, and with the President who enacted it.

It is possible that the Aquino administration and its partners in Congress were merely asleep at the switch, and did not realize the true implications of the extension. The sequence of events, as first pieced together by blogger and South China Morning Post correspondent Raissa Robles, certainly suggests that the introduction of the inserted passage, by Senate Majority Leader Vicente Sotto III, was hurried and did not benefit from in-depth discussion. The law’s major sponsor, Sen. Edgardo Angara, merely acquiesced to Sotto’s proposal to extend the reach of the existing libel provisions to cyberspace.
#29627
Coupled with the continuing inaction of the Aquino administration and its coalition allies in Congress on the long-sought, much-promised Freedom of Information Act, the new law makes us question the depth of the administration’s commitment to free speech, a free press and the free exchange of information.

A blow against free speech

Philippine Daily Inquirer
Thursday, September 20th, 2012

The new Cybercrime Prevention Act, signed into law by President Aquino on Sept. 12, takes the dangerously outmoded provisions on libel in the Revised Penal Codeâ€"and dumps them online. Without any legislative debate, without any public hearing, indeed with hardly anyone looking, these libel provisions have been unthinkingly extended to all online content. While the extension itself is only a small part of the new law, it now threatens every citizen who has access to a computer device with unconscionable restrictions on our hard-earned right to free speech.

We believe the new provision is deeply, radically, unconstitutional.
#29629
(There is also the matter of the libel provision being inserted after the bill passed the Senate, when this is not allowed after the second reading. That was illegal to begin with.)

#29630
Libel is defined in Art. 353 as the “public and malicious imputation of a crime, or of a vice or defect, real or imaginary, or any act, omission, condition, status or circumstance tending to cause the dishonor, discredit, or contempt of a natural or juridical person, or to blacken the memory of one who is dead.”

This definition of libel is rather vague and subjective to begin with; and as usual with lawmakers, as a former congressman explained to me, they add all sorts of catch-all phrases to cover the possible situations that might arise in relation to that law. So libel and defamation cases hinge on either side’s claim of what is “malicious”, “vice”, “defect”, “dishonor”, the definition of keywords such as “privacy,” and so on.

The cybercrime law

By Jenny Ortuoste
September 20, 2012
Manila Standard Today

Is the new cybercrime law oppressive?

Republic Act 10175, signed by the President into law a week ago, lists “punishable acts” related to hacking, “misuse of devices”, frauds and cons, spam, and pornography (specifically child porn and “cybersex”).

But what alarms bloggers and Internet-based news outlets most is a section that includes libel as one of the punishable “content-related” offenses:

“Section 4 (4) Libel â€" The unlawful or prohibited acts of libel as defined in Article 355 of the Revised Penal Code, as amended committed through a computer system or any other similar means which may be devised in the future.”

kadaghan ba ug gimmicks aning china uy.  hapit na lang tanang silingan biklon, gawas atong nisipsip nila.  well, matod pa sa usa ka analyst, it's not going to be a walk in the park:

...the “logic of strategy” dictates that “neighbors will naturally coalesce against the new rising threat,” thus preventing China from realizing anything like the relative military power that has been projected.

This resistance arrived early for China because of the “hubristic turn” it took after 2008.

“They (the Chinese) have been imbecilic enough to relaunch territorial quarrels with Japan, Vietnam and India more or less on the same day, when those three countries have more people, more money and more technology than China,” the book said.

“The rapid accession to prosperity has been a very common way for countries to lose their sanity,” Luttwak wrote. China suffered from ancient and new foreign policy weaknesses.

“The Chinese are autistic in dealing with foreigners, they have no sense of the ‘other,’” he  said. “They think they are incredibly brilliant strategists as if they have been conquering other nations when, in fact, it’s been the other way around for 1,500 years.”

but he decides one day to marry his longtime girlfriend.  full support ang seminary niya.  then after 2 residential houses, 4 cars, and 2 children, the marriage soured beyond repair.  he cut, and cut cleanly (hehe, kinsa to ning senadora sa u.s. sa panahon sa edsa 1 nga nisulti ani kang marcos?).

AP Exclusive: Unique tombs found in Philippines

By JIM GOMEZ | Associated Press â€" Thu, Sep 20, 2012

MANILA, Philippines (AP) â€" Archaeologists have unearthed remnants of what they believe is a 1,000-year-old village on a jungle-covered mountaintop in the Philippines with limestone coffins of a type never before found in this Southeast Asian nation, officials said Thursday.

National Museum official Eusebio Dizon said the village on Mount Kamhantik, near Mulanay town in Quezon province, could be at least 1,000 years old based on U.S. carbon dating tests done on a human tooth found in one of 15 limestone graves he and other archaeologists have dug out since last year.

The discovery of the rectangular tombs, which were carved into limestone outcrops jutting from the forest ground, is important because it is the first indication that Filipinos at that time practiced a more advanced burial ritual than previously thought and that they used metal tools to carve the coffins.

“Chinese leaders would have to end their reliance on ancient strategic texts, such as Sun Tzu’s ‘The Art of War.’ While these guides might have helped in diplomatic and military conflicts within China itself, their tacticsâ€"such as deliberately provoking crises to force negotiationsâ€"turned China’s neighbors into foes. To avoid arousing the world’s enmity further, Luttwak advises, Chinese leaders would be wise to pursue a more sustainable course of economic growth with increasing military and diplomatic restraint.”

Quoted in Doronila's column is Edward Luttwak, author of the book “The Rise of China vs. the Logic of Strategy,” due for publication in November.  Luttwak is a senior associate for the Center for Strategic Studies in Washington and consultant to the Pentagon.  For scholars on Third World power seizures in the 1970s, Luttwak is noted for the seminal book, “Coup d’État” (Harvard University Press, 1979).

detente, huh?

let's go over this:

China heading for fall

“As the rest of the world worries about what a future might look like under Chinese supremacy, Edward Luttwak worries about China’s own future prospects.  Applying the logic of strategy for which he is well known, Luttwak argues that the most populous nation on Earthâ€"and its second largest economyâ€"may be headed for a fall.

“For any country whose rising strength cannot go unnoticed, the universal logic of strategy allows only military or economic growth.  But China is pursuing both goals simultaneously.  Its military buildup and assertive foreign policy have already stirred up resistance among its neighbors.  Unless China’s leaders check their own ambitions, a host of countries, which are already  forming tacit military coalitions, will start to impose economic restrictions as well.  Chinese leaders will find it difficult to choose between pursuing economic prosperity and increasing China’s military strength.

a related addiction...

Facebook Addiction

Why some people develop Facebook dependency

- It occurs more regularly among younger than older users

- People who are anxious and socially insecure use Facebook more than those with lower scores on those traits, probably because those who are anxious find it easier to communicate via social media than face-to-face

- People who are organized and more ambitious tend to be less at risk from Facebook addiction. They will often use social media as an integral part of work and networking

- Women are more at risk of developing Facebook addiction, probably due to the social nature of Facebook

- According to research, Facebook addiction was related to extraversion; people with high scores on the new (Facebook addition) scale further tend to have a somewhat delayed sleep-wake rhythm

Chieu was brought to other hospitals but the disease was not cured. Doctors said this is a rare disease. Since then Chieu has been living with his toad skin. The strange disease has turned an agile boy into a bleary man. He now earns his living by collecting waste.

Happiness smiled to this unfortunate man. He met Vu Thi Mo, 49 now, and they got married in 1987. They have two daughters. However, happy time was very short. After a brain accident, Chieu’s wife has been paralyzed while his second daughter is mental-impaired.

This family now relies in Chieu’s waste collecting job.

What Kind of Skin Disease Is This?

Man with mysterious skin disease of thousand tumors

Nov 09 2011
Wellsphere

A man named Nguyen Dinh Chieu, 50, in Ngoc Tao commune, Phuc Tho district, Hanoi has had to live in the figure of a “demon” since his birth.

Chieu was born in a farmer family in Ngoc Tao, a poor commune in Ha Tay province (now Hanoi).  He was normal at birth but several days after that, a protuberance which was as big as a soybean appeared on his head. The protuberance grew with the child.  When Chieu was five, that protuberance was as big as a marble and it began to make the boy painful.

Chieu’s parents took him to a local hospital where doctors cut off the protuberance.  Everything was normal for a period of time until real misfortune came to the boy.  A group of small protuberance grew at the scuff of neck.  They developed very fast and spread to the boy’s back, stomach, limbs and face.

In several weeks, Chieu’s body was covered by a different skin which was lumpy like toad skin.  The boy’s parents again took Chieu to the local hospital for treatment.  Chieu stayed in the hospital for a time but doctor could not cure the strange disease.

For Dede (who is known by his first name), what started as a simple wart on his knee as a teenager spiraled his life out of control when it became infected.  Treelike growths gradually spread all over his legs, arms, chest and face.  He became physically unable to do basic functions and everyday tasks.

As a result of his condition, Dede lost his job, and his wife left him.  He moved in with his parents and has been supported by extended family.  His two kids often visit him at the hospital.

On 26 August 2008, Dede returned home following surgery to remove 6 kg (13 lb) of warts from his body.  The surgery consisted of three steps, read more about it on MFS,with 2 videoclips.

The condition usually has an onset of between the ages of 1â€"20, but can occasionally present in middle-age.  It is named after the physicians who first documented it, Felix Lewandowsky and Wilhelm Lutz.  Dede Koswara (his ordeal started when he was 15 and cut his knee where a small wart developed and spread) with the bizarre condition.  Dede expressed that he wants to get better and find a job and hopes that one day he will meet a girl and get married.

"This is the most remarkable case, the most severe case, I have seen in my career," said American doctor Anthony Gaspari at a news conference in Bandung, about a two-hour drive from capital city Jakarta.

Epidermodysplasia verruciformis (also called Lewandowsky-Lutz dysplasia or Lutz-Lewandowsky epidermodysplasia verruciformis) is an extremely rare autosomal recessive genetic hereditary skin disorder associated with a high risk of carcinoma of the skin.  It is characterized by abnormal susceptibility to human papillomaviruses (HPVs) of the skin.  The resulting uncontrolled HPV infections result in the growth of scaly macules and papules, particularly on the hands and feet.  It is typically associated with HPV types 5 and 8, which are found in about 80% of the normal population as asymptomatic infections, although other types may also contribute.

Signs and symptoms of Internet addiction or computer addiction

Signs and symptoms of Internet addiction vary from person to person. For example, there are no set hours per day or number of messages sent that indicate Internet addiction. But here are some general warning signs that your Internet use may have become a problem:

Losing track of time online. Do you frequently find yourself on the Internet longer than you intended? Does a few minutes turn in to a few hours? Do you get irritated or cranky if your online time is interrupted?

Having trouble completing tasks at work or home. Do you find laundry piling up and little food in the house for dinner because you’ve been busy online? Perhaps you find yourself working late more often because you can’t complete your work on time â€" then staying even longer when everyone else has gone home so you can use the Internet freely.

Isolation from family and friends. Is your social life suffering because of all the time you spend online? Are you neglecting your family and friends? Do you feel like no one in your “real” life â€" even your spouse â€" understands you like your online friends?

Feeling guilty or defensive about your Internet use. Are you sick of your spouse nagging you to get off the computer and spend time together? Do you hide your Internet use or lie to your boss and family about the amount of time you spend on the computer and what you do while you're online?

Feeling a sense of euphoria while involved in Internet activities. Do you use the Internet as an outlet when stressed, sad, or for sexual gratification or excitement? Have you tried to limit your Internet time but failed?

Risk factors for Internet addiction and computer addiction

You are at greater risk of Internet addiction if:

You suffer from anxiety. You may use the Internet to distract yourself from your worries and fears. An anxiety disorder like obsessive-compulsive disorder may also contribute to excessive email checking and compulsive Internet use.

You are depressed. The Internet can be an escape from feelings of depression, but too much time online can make things worse. Internet addiction further contributes to stress, isolation and loneliness.

You have any other addictions. Many Internet addicts suffer from other addictions, such as drugs, alcohol, gambling, and sex.

You lack social support. Internet addicts often use social networking sites, instant messaging, or online gaming as a safe way of establishing new relationships and more confidently relating to others.

You’re an unhappy teenager. You might be wondering where you fit in and the Internet could feel more comfortable than real-life friends.

You are less mobile or socially active than you once were. For example, you may be coping with a new disability that limits your ability to drive. Or you may be parenting very young children, which can make it hard to leave the house or connect with old friends.

You are stressed. While some people use the Internet to relieve stress, it can have a counterproductive effect. The longer you spend online, the higher your stress levels will be.

How do people become addicted to the Internet?

To relieve unpleasant and overwhelming feelings

Many people turn to the Internet in order to manage unpleasant feelings such as stress, loneliness, depression, and anxiety. When you have a bad day and are looking for a way to escape your problems or to quickly relieve stress or self-soothe, the Internet can be an easily accessible outlet. Losing yourself online can temporarily make feelings such as loneliness, stress, anxiety, depression, and boredom evaporate into thin air. As much comfort as the Internet can provide, though, it’s important to remember that there are healthier (and more effective) ways to keep difficult feelings in check. These may include exercising, meditating, using sensory relaxation strategies, and practicing simple breathing exercises.

For many people, an important aspect of overcoming Internet and computer addiction is to find alternate ways to handle these difficult feelings. Even when your Internet use is back to healthy levels, the painful and unpleasant feelings that may have prompted you to engage in unhealthy Internet use in the past will remain. So, it’s worth spending some time thinking about the different ways you intend to deal with stressful situations and the daily irritations that would normally have you logging on.

maybe we can discuss or contribute some kinds of addictions in this thread?  who knows, this may help us see some warning signs, make us more familiar with the different kinds of addictions, or help us to help someone.  disclaimer: no one need admit to anything here. ;D

ADDICTION 1: Internet and Computer Addiction

Healthy vs. unhealthy Internet use

The Internet provides a constant, ever-changing source of information and entertainment, and can be accessed from most smart phones as well as tablets, laptops, and computers. Email, blogs, social networks, and message boards allow for both public and anonymous communication about any topic. But how much is too much Internet usage?

Each person’s Internet use is different. You might need to use the Internet extensively for your work, for example, or you might rely heavily on social networking sites to keep in touch with faraway family and friends. Spending a lot of time online only becomes a problem when it absorbs too much of your time, causing you to neglect your relationships, your work, school, or other important things in your life. If you keep repeating compulsive Internet behavior despite the negative consequences in your offline life, then it’s time to strike a new balance.

Where in Tagbilaran is borax powder for sale?

i've been looking, too, through the internet anyway.  so far it's available at www.sulit.com.ph/, the brands of which i never noticed in grocery store shelves.

i checked too whether borax is similar to baking soda (which is so available in arm and hammer brand).  eureka!  it goes without saying how dangerous it is if we dwell only on presumptions, as i almost did.  here's what i got:

They are certainly not the same thing, but it depends on your purpose if you can substitute them or not! If you are cooking and the recipe calls for baking soda, borax can definitely not be used! But if you are using baking soda for cleaning, borax is also a good cleaning agent. (http://wiki.answers.com)

now i know borax less than before i read about it.  is there a chemist around here?

be that as it may, this is one of the strange things about our public service.  one can be a mayor without a college degree and a civil service eligibility.  but one cannot hold a permanent clerical city/municipal item, with a minimum pay and only if appointed by the mayor, if one does not have a college degree and a civil service eligibility.  go figure.

had anyone seen purgatory?  fortunately, or unfortunately, the answer is yes.

the mystic and visionary st. faustina (1905-1938) in her diary had described purgatory as follows:

" ...I saw my Guardian Angel, who ordered me to follow him. In a moment I was in a misty place full of fire in which there was a great crowd of suffering souls. They were praying fervently, but to no avail, for themselves; only we can come to their aid. The flames, which were burning them, did not touch me at all. My Guardian Angel did not leave me for an instant. I asked these souls what their greatest suffering was. They answered me in one voice that their greatest torment was longing for God. I saw Our Lady visiting the souls in Purgatory. The souls call Her “The Star of the Sea”. She brings them refreshment. I wanted to talk with them some more, but my Guardian Angel beckoned me to leave. We went out of that prison of suffering. [I heard an interior voice which said] ‘My mercy does not want this, but justice demands it. Since that time, I am in closer communion with the suffering souls.’” (Diary, 20) - http://cloudoffire.blogspot.com
