Entire Philippine island disappears in iOS6 map glitch

September 25, 2012

Not even the Philippines was spared from glitches in the supposedly updated Maps for iOS 6, Apple Inc.'s newest operating system for mobile devices.

In iOS 6 Maps, the entire Leyte province in Eastern Visayas —a whole island seven times bigger than Manhattan Island in the US— tends to disappear and split into six fragments, as shown in a screenshot on Tumblr.

"When you zoom out from Leyte, Philippines half of the island disappears and splits into about six islands! If you zoom out more, the island reconstitutes once Mindanao and Luzon come into view!" remarked tech site Mashable, which featured the glitch.

This was only one of several problems bugging iOS 6 Maps, which replaces Google Maps in Apple's latest OS for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.

Mashable, citing the Tumblr blog "The Amazing iOS 6 Maps," also noted the following instances:

- a disappearing giant statue outside the Denver Center for Performing Arts

- failing to list shops in The Birmingham Bullring, one of the UK’s largest shopping centers, except for —you guessed it— the Apple Store

- completely missing the Sydney Opera House, one of Sydney’s most iconic landmarks

- much park land lost in Melbourne, Australia
