Guess who is this celebrity coupleâ€"a man and a womanâ€"who officially announced their relationship after the man was circumcised?

“Kliq Showbiz” of Radyo Inquirer in its blind item segment posted this intriguing question Thursday afternoon.

The report said the couple has been exclusively dating for more than a year though they didn’t admit in public they are officially together until the allegedly much-needed surgical procedure takes place.

“Kliq Showbiz” is hosted by Jen Cruz and Ervin Santiago, airing from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Friday, on Radyo Inquirer 990AM. - source: Inquirer.net

Lost Kingdom of Cleopatra

Cleopatra’s Kingdom, Alexandria, Egypt* (Found in 1998')
"Lost for 1,600 years, the royal quarters of Cleopatra were discovered off the shores of Alexandria. A team of marine archaeologists, led by Frenchman, Franck Goddio, began excavating the ancient city in 1998. Mainstream historians believe the site was submerged by earthquakes and tidal waves, yet, astonishingly, several artifacts remained largely intact. Amongst the discoveries were the foundations of the palace, shipwrecks, red granite columns, and statues of the goddess Isis and a sphinx. The Egyptian Government plans to create an underwater museum and hold tours of the site."

Gum is Poison

by Bill Crowder

Across the United States and around the world, we often experience the dramatic effect of something no one can see. In 2011, for instance, several US cities were devastated by tornadoes that blew apart neighborhoods and business districts. And during each hurricane season, we are shocked as winds of more than 100 miles an hour threaten to destroy what we have built.

All of this is the result of an unseen force. Sure, we see the wind’s effects (flags flapping, debris flying), but we cannot see the wind itself. It works in mysterious invisibility.

In a sense, this is also true of the Holy Spirit. In Acts 2, when believers experienced the filling of the Spirit on the Day of Pentecost, “suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting” (Acts 2:2). That wind was a tangible demonstration to those early Christians that the unseen Spirit was at work in their lives. And He still works in our lives today! If you are a follower of Christ, be encouraged. The Holy Spirit bears fruit in your life (Gal. 5:22-23), forms believers into one body (1 Cor. 12:13), and assures you of God’s presence (1 John 3:24). The Holy Spirit is a powerful Person in our livesâ€"even though we can’t see Him.

Silently now I wait for Thee,
Ready, my God, Thy will to see;
Open my heartâ€"illumine me,
Spirit divine. â€"Scott

The Holy Spirit works powerfully, though invisibly.

Bible Study / Early Childhood Fascination with Ants
July 16, 2012, 06:00:17 AM
by Dennis Fisher, Our Daily Bread

In his book Adventures Among Ants: A Global Safari with a Cast of Trillions, Mark Moffett reflects on his early childhood fascination with antsâ€"an interest that didn’t die as he grew older. Moffett’s preoccupation led to his earning a doctorate at Harvard and then embarking on worldwide travel as an expert on the subject. His study has given him marvelous insights about these industrious creatures.

Long before Moffett discovered some of the wonders of the ant world, the Scriptures remarked on the ingenuity and work ethic of these tiny insects. Ants are held up by wise King Solomon as an example of industry for those who tend to be lazy: “Go to the ant, you sluggard! Consider her ways and be wise, which, having no captain . . . provides her supplies in the summer, and gathers her food in the harvest” (Prov. 6:6-8).

The marvels of God’s creation are beautifully illustrated as God uses His creatures to instruct us. For instance, from the ant we can see the importance of planning ahead and laying away provisions for the future (30:25). God built spiritual lessons into nature itself, and we can learn from creatures even as tiny as an ant.

In the open book of nature faith remains unmovedâ€"
Patterns of the Master-Builder by each fact are proved;
So with reverent hearts we ponder all the grand design
Of the universe around us, wrought by hands divine. â€"Peterson

In God’s pattern book of nature we can trace many valuable lessons.

Bible Study / To love God is to obey God
July 16, 2012, 05:55:42 AM
by David C. McCasland

The Lord your God led you all the way these forty years . . . to humble you and test you. â€"Deuteronomy 8:2

A few weeks after writing an Our Daily Bread article about the importance of obeying the law, I set out on an 850-mile tripâ€"determined to stay within the posted speed limit. While driving out of a small town in New Mexico, I became more occupied with unwrapping a sandwich than with watching the road signs, and I got a speeding ticket. My first lesson that day was that not paying attention costs the same as deliberate disregard for the law. And I still had 700 miles to go!

My second lesson was that our resolve will always be tested. I thought of Moses’ words to God’s people as they prepared to enter the Promised Land: “You shall remember that the Lord your God led you all the way these forty years in the wilderness, to humble you and test you, to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep His commandments or not” (Deut. 8:2).

Pastor and author Eugene Peterson called the process of following Christ “a long obedience in the same direction.” Every resolution to begin to obey must be followed by many decisions to continue.

God gave me a humbling reminder of how vital it is to keep my heart set on obeying Himâ€"and to pay attention along the way.

Thou who hast freely given
Thine all in all for me,
Claim this life for Thine own to be used,
My Savior, every moment for Thee. â€"Christiansen

To love God is to obey God.

In Outlive Your Life, Max Lucado writes: “Hospitality opens the door to uncommon community. It’s no accident that hospitality and hospital come from the same Latin word, for they both lead to the same result: healing. When you open your door to someone, you are sending this message: ‘You matter to me and to God.’ You may think you are saying, ‘Come over for a visit.’ But what your guest hears is, ‘I’m worth the effort.’”

This is what the apostle Paul must have heard and felt when Aquila and Priscilla opened the doors of their home to him. When he arrived in Corinth, he was probably exhausted from his journey from Athens. He may also have been discouraged because of his seemingly unsuccessful ministry there (Acts 17:16-34). He later wrote, “I was with you in weakness, in fear, and in much trembling” (1 Cor. 2:3). Aquila and Priscilla probably met Paul in the marketplace of Corinth and opened their home to him. They provided a spiritual oasis through Christian hospitality.

As followers of Jesus, we are called to be hospitable, to be a “hospital” that helps those who are going through life’s storms and need restoration. We can be used by the Lord because He has provided for us.

Heavenly Father, make me open to be willing to serve
others through showing hospitality.
May I provide a safe haven for those going through
the storms of life. Amen.

Christian hospitality is an open heart and an open home.

by PIA - Vegetables abound in the country, and yet Filipinos are eating less and less of the green, leafy foods.

Studies show that in the latter part of 1978, Filipinos consumed 145 gm of vegetables per person every day. In 2008, it was discovered that the Filipinosââ,¬â,,¢ daily vegetable consumption decreased to only 110 mgm per person.

The figures are lower for Central Visayas. According to Negros Oriental Provincial Nutrition Council Action officer Dr. Edgardo Barredo, Region 7 residents only consume 102 gm of vegetables per day.

Health experts in Dumaguete City find this alarming, in view of the increasing number of deaths caused by lifestyle diseases or ailments that could have been avoided by the daily intake of vegetables and fruits.

Barredo, in a forum held Wednesday to mark the provinceââ,¬â,,¢s celebration of Nutrition Month this July, disclosed that cardiovascular diseases rank as the 6th leading cause of diseases in Negros Oriental for the past five years.

Heart-related ailments are also among the top leading causes of deaths in the province for the same period, followed by cancer, renal disease, and chronic pulmonary diseases.

This is based on data submitted to Barredoââ,¬â,,¢s office by the 25 towns and cities in the province.

Negros Orientalââ,¬â,,¢s vegetable sufficiency level has been growing over the years, with 45 percent sufficiency in 2002 and 75 percent in the past few years, said provincial agriculturist Gregorio Paltinca.

He said the province has been implementing several programs geared towards ensuring vegetable sufficiency here, such as the establishment of the award-winning Barangay Agricultural Development Centers (BADC) and the Gulayan at Palaisdaan Alay sa Kabataan (GPAK).

Both programs are Galing Pook awardees, GPAK in 2005 and BADC in 2004, said Paltinca.

ââ,¬Å"Itââ,¬â,,¢s an irony because we are living in a country with abundant supply of vegetables and yet we are not consuming enough of these,ââ,¬Â said Prof. Michelle Naranjo of the Silliman University Nutrition and Dietetics in the same forum.

She added that in Dumaguete City alone, there are 1,000 children recorded to be malnourished. ââ,¬Å"This is preventable because malnutrition is caused by micronutrient deficiency, which can be found in plants,ââ,¬Â said Naranjo.

She noted that many pregnant and lactating mothers in the city are also anemic because they are not eating enough vegetables.

Both Barredo and Naranjo urged Filipinos to eat the required intake of greens to prevent lifestyle-related diseases.

The recommended fruit and vegetable intake, according to Naranjo, is three servings of vegetables and two servings of fruits everyday.

ââ,¬Å"That means one half-cup of green, leafy vegetables and 3/4 cup of non-leafy greens such as squash, bitter melon, and sayote,ââ,¬Â she explained.

PRINCIPLES OF EMERGENCY MEDICINE

It is often said that ED patients "don't read the textbook," meaning that their presentations do not fit nicely into specific textbook diagnoses or classical presentations of illness. However, a cornerstone of an EP's practice is the recognition of patterns in a patient's presentation; therefore, the prudent physician must be a detective and scientist to muddle through the muck of vague signs and symptoms to find the pattern.

The principles of emergency medicine are simply questions that must be answered to provide effective care to patients who have entrusted EPs with their care. The questions are not to be used as a cookbook approach to the management of these often complex medical and psychosocial issues but are to be used as a simple method to guide the prudent EP through the quagmire of clinical emergency medicine.

A. Is the Patient About to Die?

Obviously, this is the first and most important question to answer. Every patient's presentation is quickly prioritized to one of the following acuities:

1. Criticalâ€"Patient has symptoms consistent with a life-threatening illness or injury with a high probability of death if immediate intervention is not begun.

2. Emergentâ€"Patient has symptoms of illness or injury that may progress in severity if treatment is not begun quickly.

3. Nonurgentâ€"Patient has symptoms that have a low probability of progression to a more serious condition.

Look for symptoms of a life-threatening emergency, not a specific disease entity. Anticipate impending life-threatening emergencies in the apparently stable patient.

B. What Steps Must Be Undertaken to Stabilize the Patient?

Act quickly to stabilize the critically ill or injured patient. Focus on the primary survey (airway, breathing, circulation, and neurologic deficits) and make necessary interventions as each issue is identified. Do not delay necessary primary interventions while awaiting completion of ancillary testing.

C. What Are the Most Potential Serious Causes of the Patient's Presentation?

Thinking of the worst-case scenario, develop a mental list of the most deadly causes of the patient's presentation by asking, "What will kill my patient the fastest?" Once the list has been developed, the vital signs, history, physical examination, and ancillary assessments should identify or confirm those causes highest on the list.

D. Could There Be Multiple Causes of the Patient's Presentation?

In addition to constant reevaluation and reprioritization of the differential diagnosis, continually ask, "Is this all there is?" For example, is the new-onset seizure and hypoglycemia in an older diabetic patient from intentional or accidental medication overdose or perhaps worsening renal insufficiency? Is the near-syncope and abdominal pain in an apparently intoxicated college coed from a ruptured ectopic pregnancy or perhaps a ruptured spleen secondary to undisclosed physical abuse by her boyfriend? Frequent reassessment and thoughtful inquiry as to the multiple possibilities responsible for each patient's condition is imperative.

E. Can a Treatment Assist in the Diagnosis in an Otherwise Undifferentiated Illness?

Often, in emergency medicine, treatment response foretells a diagnosis. A case in point is the unconscious patient with no available collateral history. The patient's response to empiric administration of naloxone will include or exclude narcotic overdose as a contributor to the obtundation. Referred to as the "diagnostic-therapeutic" concept, it underscores the emergency medicine philosophy that an established diagnosis is not a prerequisite to initiating appropriate treatment. Pitfalls can exist. For example, sublingual nitroglycerin and so-called GI cocktails can relieve symptoms of chest pain resulting from the same cause.

F. Is a Diagnosis Mandatory or Even Possible?

After the emergency issues have been addressed, the patient and EP are often left with an undifferentiated symptom complex. This frequently elicits an uncomfortable response by non-emergency medicine trained physicians. The EP should become accustomed to and comfortable with the notion of determining the disposition for a nonemergency patientâ€"having treated their symptoms and excluding emergency conditionsâ€"without a specific diagnosis.

G. Does This Patient Need to be Admitted to the Hospital?

Having appropriately answered the preceding questions, make the bottom-line disposition decision. Once assessments and treatments are under way, decide whether an emergency condition exists. Consider other subtleties. Does the patient have timely, accessible follow-up? How far away from a medical facility does the patient live? Are unresolved abuse or self-care issues involved? Are you, as the EP, comfortable discharging the patient?

H. If the Patient Is Not Being Admitted, Is the Disposition Safe and Adequate for the Patient?

More frequently than not, patients are discharged home from the ED. However, many patients do not receive a specific diagnosis, and some symptoms may persist. Recommend appropriate follow-up and provide written discharge instructions. Invite the patient back. Instruct the patient when to return for further evaluation should symptoms change or worsen. Provide the patient with information regarding treatment and diagnosis as well.
#29674
UNIQUE ASPECTS OF EMERGENCY MEDICINE PRACTICE

An EP faces numerous challenges. The first and most distinctive challenge is that of limited time. Time constraints occur because of the severity and acuity of the illness and also because of the ever-present worry that someone else will need the physician's attention. The second challenge for the EP is that they need to quickly assess and make therapeutic decisions on the basis of limited information. The EP may also be providing medical control for patients in the prehospital environment. In addition, the EP also will need to determine what care was given prior to arrival and what impact the intervention made. History may be provided from bystanders or EMS providers and given to the physician second hand.

The EP has a different mindset than other specialties. The main concern of the EP is not necessarily the diagnosis, but a process of thinking aimed at ruling in or out serious pathology that is life- or limb-threatening. The classic model of history taking followed by a physical examination and then diagnostic testing must often be compressed and conducted simultaneously when time is of the essence and the patient's life is threatened.

The evaluation of patients should proceed in a parallel fashion rather than the time-honored serial method. The mindset that patients must be triaged and registered in the waiting room when there are beds available must be abandoned. Patients should be taken straight away to any available room where the physician and nurse assess the patient and get the history while the patient is simultaneously having an intravenous line with blood work drawn and registration occurring in the room. The single intervention of in-room registration can decrease the length of stay of the patient by an average of 15 minutes.

The ED is a unique environment in that hospital EDs are required by federal law to evaluate patients without regard to ability to pay. In 2005, there were an estimated 45-48 million Americans without health insurance. This puts financial strains on both hospitals and physicians. In addition, patients with nonurgent health problems use the ED for a variety of reasons. Studies have found that the majority of patients were not aware of other places to go for their care. When an ED reaches 140% of its capacity, the number of patients leaving without being seen increases. This leads to patient dissatisfaction and an increased risk of litigation.

Because of a number of factors it may be difficult to get on-call physicians to care for patients seen in the ED. In a recent study conducted in California it was found that the lack of insurance had a negative impact on the availability to obtain specialty physician assistance. The seven specialties noted to have the greatest difficulty in obtaining specialty consultations were plastic surgery, ENT, dentistry, psychiatry, neurosurgery, ophthalmology, and orthopedics. This was found despite the medical staff bylaws that required on-call ED coverage. It is up to the EP to be the patient advocate, even when that means holding a patient in the department until they can get the care they need or the appropriate laboratory or specialty evaluation to let them safely go home.

It is imperative that the EP be informed about the resources that are available to the patients after discharge. It is a simple matter to send a patient to see a physician that they already have a relationship with. It may not be such an easy matter for the uninsured or indigent patient. Various clinics in the community can assist patients with needs such as prenatal care or those with diabetes or HIV. In addition, the physician must inquire about domestic violence and elderly abuse and remain vigilant about the potential of child abuse.

EPs work in an environment in which patients die. Despite the circumstances surrounding the patient's death, the EP needs to get answers to a myriad of questions: Why the person died, will the illness have an impact on survivors, does the illness put health-care workers and society at risk, should an autopsy be performed for medical or legal reasons, and does the family desire organ donation? In interacting with survivors, the EP should avoid cliches that can be misleading and let the survivors know that the patient has died, in whatever language is appropriate. The EP needs to be on guard for the occasional violent reaction by survivors, so doors need to be open and security may need to be in close proximity. It behooves the EP to find positive ways to take care of themselves and the ED staff from emotionally traumatic events through techniques such as stress debriefing or counseling. - source: McgrawHill Textbook on Medicine

WHAT IS EMERGENCY MEDICINE?

An emergency is commonly defined as any condition perceived by the prudent laypersonâ€"or someone on his or her behalfâ€"as requiring immediate medical or surgical evaluation and treatment. On the basis of this definition, the American College of Emergency Physicians states that the practice of emergency medicine has the primary mission of evaluating, managing, and providing treatment to these patients with unexpected injury and illness.

So what does an emergency physician (EP) do? This specialist routinely provides care and makes medical treatment decisions based on real-time evaluation of a patient's history; physical findings; and many diagnostic studies, including multiple imaging modalities, laboratory tests, and electrocardiograms. The EP needs an amalgam of skills to treat a wide variety of injuries and illnesses, ranging from the diagnosis of an upper respiratory infection or dermatologic condition to resuscitation and stabilization of the multiple trauma patient. Furthermore, these physicians must be able to practice emergency medicine on patients of all ages and not just in urban tertiary-care facilities. Clinical emergency medicine may be practiced in emergency departments (EDs), both rural and urban; urgent care clinics; and other settings such as at mass gathering incidents, through emergency medical services (EMS), and in hazardous material and bioterrorism situations.

Emergency medicine serves as the United States' health-care safety net. It provides valuable clinical and administrative services to the health-care delivery system, including care for the indigent and others who lack access to health care, and has evolved as the most visible and vital component of a patchwork of health-care providers and facilities. EDs have become the routine, and often the only, source of care for many of the uninsured, thereby acting as a critical safety net for our fragmented health-care delivery system.

Finally, EDs are the only element of the health-care system whose function has been delineated by federal law. Initially authorized in 1986, the Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act mandates that all EDs provide screening, stabilization, and appropriate transfer to all patients with any medical condition. Emergency medicine is often the last resort for many patients and frequently the access point for competent, comprehensive, and efficient medical care. - source: McGraw Hill Textbook

According to reports, a Kuwaiti royal prince has become a follower of Jesus Christ. In an audio file posted with his name, he affirms that if he is killed because of a recording he made where he talks about his conversion, he firmly believes that he will meet Jesus Christ face-to-face. The news comes from Middle Eastern sources which state that al-Haqiqa â€" a Christian satellite TV channel in Arabic that transmits Christian religious programmes â€" broadcast an audio file attributed to the Kuwaiti prince, identified as Abdullah al-Sabah. The al-Sabahs are the royal family of Kuwait, a country rich in oil. The name Abdullah (servant of God) frequently appears in the Emir’s family tree.

In his audio file, Abdullah declared: “First of all, I fully agree with the distribution of this audio file and I now declare that if they kill me because of it, then I will appear before Jesus Christ and be with him for all eternity.” In this statement, the prince demonstrates his awareness of the fate in store for a martyr of the faith, according to Christian doctrine. The television channel stated that Abdullah is a member of the royal family, and that he recently renounced his faith in Islam and became a Christian, without specifying which particular branch of Christianity he had chosen. After stating his full name, the prince declared: “I will accept whatever they do to me, because the truth in the Bible has guided me towards the right path.”

In the audio file, Abdullah talks about the Islamic groups that are winning the elections in Egypt and declares: “Islamic communities have always wanted to attack in different parts of the world but God has preserved the world and still protects it. This is why we have recently seen disagreements appearing among Islamic groups who are now fighting with each other. They are about to divide further into different groups.”

A new Canadian study has found that although the number of stroke deaths is declining in the country, early diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients could still be improved.

The study, released Thursday by the Canadian Institute for Health Information, examined more than 62,000 stroke cases that occurred in the province of Ontario between 2006-2007 and 2009-2010.

It found that despite best practice recommendations, more than one in three Ontario stroke patients did not arrive at the hospital by ambulance.

Quick diagnosis and treatment are critical in stroke care, because in some cases there is a short window to limit or reduce brain damage for patients, the study said.

However, a national audit conducted by the Canadian Stroke Network showed that only about one-third of patients with stroke across Canada arrived at the hospital within 3.5 hours of the onset of their symptoms.

There is room for improvement in the ability of the population to recognize and respond most appropriately to the first symptoms of stroke, the study suggested.

Warning signs and symptoms of stroke include weakness, such as sudden loss of strength or sudden numbness in the face, arm or leg, trouble speaking, vision problems, headache and dizziness, it said. - PNA, source
